Indian archers announce arrival on world stage

Tapan Mohanta New Delhi, Oct 7 (PTI) In an unprecedented success, the Indian compound archers today announced their arrival on the big stage, claiming a silver and a bronze in the men''s and women''s team events respectively in the 19th Commonwealth Games at Yamuna Sports Complex here today. Shedding their tag as ''under-achievers'', the men''s trio of Jignas Chittibomma, Chinna Raju and Ritul Chatterjee claimed their first ever medal at any international level when they lost to the Englishmen 229-231 to settle for the silver. The women''s trio of Bheigyabati Chanu, Jhano Hansdah and Gagandeep Kaur beat 223-219 in the bronze play-off as the Archery Association of India (AAI) secretary general Paresh Nath Mukherjee said the medals had come as a "bonus". "We never expected to get anything in compound section, as our main strength has been in the recurve section. But our effort and the archers'' hardwork has paid fruits," Mukherjee said. It was the youngest member of the side, 16-year-old Jignas who made all the difference for the Indians in pulling off a stunning 226-224 win over the South Africans in the semi-finals. In all-praise of the Andhra archer, who trains at the Army Sports Institute at Ghorpuri in Pune, India compound coach Harendra Singh said "All credit goes to Jignas. He instilled the confidence in the Indians shooting in 79s and 80s. "But the Englishmen opened up a five-point lead which was difficult to match. We covered up but only by three points. Neverthless, this silver medal, first time in the history of compound archers, will give them a new found confidence. "Now we will also be recognised alongside our big brothers (the recurve archers)," Singh told PTI. In the final, the trio notched their best ever score of 229 but the mighty Englishmen trio of Duncan Edward Craig Busby, Liam Grimwood and Christopher White were too good to win the gold by a slender three points. South Africa beat Australia 234-232 in the men''s compound bronze playoff. Earlier, the women''s team, who had earlier seen success at international level bagging World Cup silver and bronze medals at various stages, also dished out an unexpected performance with a fine show by Jhano Hansdah to earn India the first archery medal in Commonwealth Games. The bronze by the women''s compound was India''s first ever in Games archery which made a return after making a debut in the Brisbane edition in 1982. In the bronze playoff, it was an exciting affair till the last three arrows were to be shot. Indians were 195 with three rounds while Malaysia finished at 219. When the last arrow was to be shot by Hansdah, India needed five points and she shot eight to give India its first medal of the competition. Hansdah told PTI that they had lost all hopes after the disappointing elimination in the individual rounds. "Lekin haar ke hi log sikhte hain (Win comes only after realising a loss). We all were determined after the loss in the individuals. We had a great day yesterday when we notched our best ever 227." The action now will shift to India''s gold medal hopes when the recurve teams fight it out in the men''s and women''s sections tomorrow. Women''s trio of Nicky Hunt, Nichola Simpson and Danielle Brown shot 232, just one point off the world record to win England the second gold. Canada shot 229 for the silver in women''s compound. Melbourne, Oct 07 (ANI): When Victoria Beckham was asked about her husband David's famously high-pitched voice, the former Spice Girl made it clear that it was hard to find fault with perfection.

"I don't really notice that he's got a high-pitched voice. I just think he's so godd*** perfect that people have to find something wrong with him," News.com.au quoted her as saying.

"We were about to go out somewhere the other day, and he was sending an email. He was sitting at the end of the bed, and he had no clothes on whatsoever.

"I was getting out of the shower, and I just stood there looking at him. He was all tan. Has all those tattoos, which I love.

Ugandan officials fine after mishap, back at work

New Delhi, Oct 7 (IANS) The three Ugandan officials who were injured in an accident at the Commonwealth Games Village are fine and back at work, Delhi Police said Thursday.

Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat told IANS the incident took place Tuesday night when a tyre killer malfunctioned at the Games Village.

'The officials' car was damaged but they received minor injuries only. They were taken to the polyclinic inside the Village for treatment and were discharged in a few hours,' Bhagat added.

Sadhana Dewal, project officer of the polyclinic in the Games Village, said the officials were healthy and back at work.

Use of condoms in Games Village, a positive story: Fennell

New Delhi, Oct 7 (PTI) Condoms blocking toilets in the Games village might have come in for some embarrassment but the Commonwealth Games Federation boss Michael Fennell termed it a "positive" story saying that athletes are responsible in promoting safe sex. While sex is not a Commonwealth Games sport, it seems to be an activity in the Games Village at Akshardham housing more than 7,000 athletes, all of whom are in great shape and with plenty of free time at their disposal once knocked out of their respective events. Asked about the embarraassing scenes of condoms blocking toilets at the Games Village, the CGF president said: "If that is happening, it shows there is use of condoms and I think that is a very positive story, that athletes are being responsible." "This issue was controversial some years back but not now. Promoting safe sex is a responsible thing to do," he said. Incidentally, athletes received free condoms at every Games Village since Barcelona in 1992 to help raise awareness about AIDS, and in Beijing 2008 it notched up a record with a whopping 100,000 condoms being distributed.

'Delusional' man who accused wife of Becks affair submits cheating emails

London, Oct 7 (ANI): The man who accused his wife of having an affair with David Beckham has claimed that he has evidence of 'emails and texts' to prove she was cheating on him.

In a court deposition, multi-millionaire lawyer Kambiz Shabani, 43, has responded to his wife Shery Shabani's bid for a restraining order by insisting she has been having an affair.

Both Beckham and Shery have categorically denied any sort of sexual relationship and there is no suggestion the emails and texts involve Beckham.

In a separate declaration to the court, Kambiz Shabani's brother Kamyar - also a lawyer - insisted his brother had evidence of 'emails and texts' to prove Shery, 33, had committed adultery and was 'lying' to her family, reports the Daily Mail.

However, Kambiz did not say who he believed his wife was having an affair with.

And there is no suggestion these emails have anything to do with former England captain Beckham.

A spokesman for Beckham said last week the initial claims were 'full of fantasy.'

Now, in the deposition filed at Los Angeles Superior Court, Kambiz has said he and his wife 'have been experiencing marital troubles for many months due to my belief that petitioner [Shery] has had an affair.'

In her deposition to the court, made public last week, Shery had claimed her husband had falsely accused her of having an affair with Beckham.

In his response, Kambiz made no mention of the footballer.

However, following a closed-door hearing on Monday in front of Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Amy Pellman, six emails said to have been presented by Kambiz's lawyer Manley Freid to the judge have also been kept confidential.

There is no evidence the messages had anything to do with Beckham.

However, a representative for Mrs Shabani is reported to have told entertainment website RadarOnline there have been emails between Shery and Beckham although she said they were 'purely business' related.

Shery also submitted four text messages and six of her own emails into evidence. (ANI)

Shooters Vijay Kumar, Gurpreet Singh win gold in 25 Metre Rapid Fire Pistol

New Delhi, Oct 7 (ANI): Ace shooters Vijay Kumar and Gurpreet Singh bagged gold on the fourth day of the XIXth Commonwealth Games in 25 Metre Rapid Fire Pistol (Men) here today.

The Indian duo scored 1162 points to set a new Commonwealth Games record.

Malaysia won the silver, while Australia bagged the bronze in the event. (ANI)
