Lahore, June 25 (PTI) The New Delhi Commonwealth Games, to be held later this year, will help bring the people of the sub-continent closer, feels Chief Minister of Pakistan''s Punjab province Shahbaz Sharif. "This extravaganza will not only bring closer the people of the subcontinent but also the participating countries," Sharif said at a dinner reception hosted by the Pakistan Olympic Association to mark the arrival of the Games'' baton in the country. "It is a big honour for Southeast Asia that it is going to host such a mega event," he added. Sharif assured Pakistan''s support and cooperation to the organisers for successful hosting of the event. He described the Commonwealth Union as a unique blend of various cultures and traditions and said the exchange of sportspersons from various continents gives them a chance to know each other. The POA chief Syed Arif Hasan handed over the Baton to Sharif and underlined the need to revive sports events between Pakistan and India. "Sports teaches the lesson of tolerance and respect, besides creating an atmosphere of competition and athletes carry forward the spirit of the game," he said while addressing the gathering. Manglam Singh, a member of the Games'' Organising Committee, gave assurance that the Indian government will extend full cooperation to facilitate smooth entry of Pakistanis for attending the sporting extravaganza. The Baton arrived in Pakistan on the last leg of its international journey after travelling through 71 nations and was handed over to the Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi at the Wagah border today.
