Interference in World Cup signal came from Jordan - Jazeera

Thu, Sep 30 10 11:56 PM

Jamming of Al Jazeera's coverage of World Cup soccer in June originated in Jordan, the Qatar-based broadcaster said on Thursday.

Al Jazeera, which secured exclusive rights from FIFA to broadcast the soccer spectacular in the Middle East and North Africa, suffered disruption of some of the matches, including the opening game between South Africa and Mexico.

"Al Jazeera confirms that the source of the disturbance on its sports channel during the World Cup came from Jordan," the Arabic language channel said.

It gave no further details and no comment was immediately available from Jordan.

Egypt and Al Jazeera clashed over the interference during the competition after the channel alleged an Egyptian-managed satellite service carrying the signal was deliberately sabotaged.

Egypt denied any involvement in the jamming and called for an independent body to investigate.
