Kolkata, Oct 28 (IANS) Income Tax officials Thursday raided the offices of MBL Infrastructure Limited here over the contract awarded to it for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in New Delhi. The raids were a part of the nation-wide drive on offices of companies which received CWG contracts.

The firm was awarded the contract for building several roads within the Games Village and to carry out beautification projects. The value of the MBL contracts was Rs.725 crore, said an official of the IT department.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the official said: 'Six teams comprising officials from IT's investigation departments from Delhi and Kolkata raided MBL Infrastructure Limited's offices in Ho Chi Minh Sarani and Netaji Subhas Road from 8.30 a.m.' Search and survey operations were also conducted in four offices of other companies.

'The raids are still going on. We have not seized any documents yet. We are just overseeing the papers and documents of the contracts and questioning the employees of the company,' said the official.

'We are trying to know about the quality of the steel and other building materials used by the company during construction. If any anomalies are found, we will seize the documents,' the official added.

Media persons were not allowed to enter the offices where raids were conducted. The owners of the MBL Infrastructure Limited refused to comment despite repeated attempts.

Another highly placed official leading the investigation team said: 'Raids would continue overnight and by Friday afternoon we will be able to go through the entire files and documents before confiscating those. It's a long term process.'
