Russian sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko became the highest seed to fall at this year's U.S. Open when he was thrashed 6-3 6-4 6-2 by Frenchman Richard Gasquet on Thursday.

The Masters Cup champion was outplayed throughout by an inspired performance from world number 38 Gasquet, who clinched victory in one hour 53 minutes.

Davydenko, still struggling for top form after missing 11 weeks earlier this year because of a broken left wrist, could not handle the power and variety of the Frenchman's game.

Last year's U.S. Open was just Gasquet's second event back after a two-year ban for taking cocaine was rescinded by a tribunal, who accepted his explanation that the substance had entered his system through a kiss in a nightclub with a woman.
