Vidit and Anwesh emerge leaders

Kolkata, Sep 2 (PTI) International Masters Vidit Gujarati and Anwesh Upadhayay ermerged joint leaders with four points each after round four of the Tea Board of India Chess For Youth Championship at Netaji Indoor Stadium here today. Playing white, former world U-14 boys'' champion Vidit got two extra pawns in a queen ending against former Asian Junior girls'' champion Mary Ann Gomes that earned him the full point. Anwesh, playing black against national women''s champion Kruttika Nadig, obtained two Lopez opening for a rook in a Ruy Lopez opening as she struggled to defend her weak pawns with the rook. Anwesh effectively combined his two minor pieces to force a win. FM Bitan Banerjee was held to a draw by Santu Mondal with the black pieces in a Slav defence. Both Bitan and Santu now jointly share the secnd spot along with GM Deep Sengupta on 3.5 points apiece. Top seed and past two year''s champion Sengupta, who survived a scare yesterday, won both his games today to remain in contention for the top slot. The surprise of day one, eight-year-old Mitrabha Guha, however, lost both his games to Kruttika and Sayan to remain on two points.
