Jacques Kallis moved to within a run of his 35th test century as South Africa continued to punish the West Indies' bowling on the second day of the second test on Saturday.

At lunch, South Africa were 398 for three with AB de Villiers a run short of his half-century.

The pair added 102 runs in the session with Kallis striking 10 fours and a six from his 203 balls. De Villiers scored 42 runs in the session with seven boundaries and a six.

The West Indies' bowlers continued to toil without success as both batsmen thumped boundaries on either side of the pitch.

Play began 15 minutes late because of rain.
