MP takes control after dismissing Goa for 170

Mon, Nov 01 10 10:22 PM

Indore, Nov 1 (PTI) Hosts Madhya Pradesh bundled out Goa for a paltry score of 170 and ended day one at 67 for the loss of one wicket to take firm control of the Group ''A'' Plate division match at the Holkar Stadium here today. Goa skipper Sagun Kamat''s decision to bat on a lush green wicket after winning the toss backfired as the Madhya Pradesh bowlers took advantage of the early morning moisture and moved the ball well. The hosts got a breakthrough in the third, when Kamat (4) was caught behind off T Sudheendra with just four runs on the board. Soon after Sudheendra trapped senior batsman Vidyut Shivramakrishnan (2) with the team''s total at just six. The situation got worse for Goa as Swapnil Asnodkar was caught by Ishwar Pandey off his own bowling for a nought to leave Goa reeling at 6-3. Former India stumper Ajay Ratra and Rahul Keni added 55 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Ratra (21) was sent back by left arm spinner Ankit Sharma. It was only due to the efforts of Shadab Jakati that the visitors could cross 150, after Vaibhav Naik (1), Sourabh Bandekar (6) and Keni (39) had perished even before the team had crossed the three-figure mark. Jakati batted freely and punished the loose balls at regular intervals. He was unlucky not to complete his half century and was trapped in front by Ankit Sharma after he had scored a useful 49 in 85 balls with the help of eight fours. Tailenders, Robin D''Souza and Amit Yadav chipped in with useful knocks of 18 and 16 respectively. For MP, Ankit Sharma bowled well to capture three wickets for 53 runs, while T Sudheendra got two wickets for 34 runs. In reply, the hosts started badly losing opener Zafar Ali, who replaced an injured Jalaj Saxena, even before the team could open its account. Naman Ojha 31 (81b, 4x6) and Mohnish Mishra 35 (71b, 4x5, 6x1) ensured that no further damage was done.
