Mumbai to host Assam in Ranji Trophy tie

Tue, Nov 23 10 07:36 PM

Mumbai, Nov 23 (PTI) After making heavy weather of their chase against Railways, hosts Mumbai will be hoping for a better showing against Assam and strengthen their place on top of group A in the Ranji Trophy Elite Division. After notching up big totals in their first two matches against Saurashtra and Bengal on flat tracks, the famed Mumbai batting line-up crumbled twice against Railways on a track that had something for the bowlers. The batsmen''s tendency to falter on a bowler-friendly wicket is a cause for concern for Mumbai. However, the hosts can take heart from the performance of youngsters - Dhawal Kulkarni, Rohan Raje, and Iqbal Abdullah - who combined with Ramesh Powar to bowl out the opposition twice - and Ajinkya Rahane, whose splendid knock of 94 paved the way for the home team''s victory. Another good news for the hosts is that the duo of Abhishek Nayar and Ajit Agarkar who missed the previous match due to injuries, have recovered. For Assam skipper Amol Mazumdar it would be sort of a homecoming as the veteran returns to the city he has represented for almost one and half decade. Assam, who lost their first match against Tamil Nadu by seven wickets, bounced back by taking the first-innings lead against Railways and Bengal. The match beginning tomorrow, was earlier scheduled to be hosted by the under-renovation Wankhede Stadium, before being shifted to the Mumbai Cricket Association''s ground at the Bandra Kurla Complex.
