Myanmar to build first international cricket stadium

Beijing, Nov 19 (PTI) Myanmar, one of the latest entrant to the world of cricket, will have its first international stadium by 2012 which will be built with New Zealand''s help, according to a media report today. The Myanmar Cricket Federation (MCF) has projected to start building the first international cricket field in Yangon in the open season of this year, the 7-Day News said. The dedicated cricket field, which includes stage, office and car parking lot, is to be constructed in the former capital''s suburban Dagon Myothit (North) area, China''s state- run Xinhua news agency reported from Yangon. The cricket ground, which can accommodate about 20,000 spectators on the 2.97-hectare plot, will be built by experts from New Zealand and the project is expected to complete by 2012. Myanmar cricket team became the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) member in 2005. Cricket was introduced in Myanmar after the British colonised the country more than a century ago. Meanwhile, the Myanmar cricket team will compete in ACC Trophy Challenge 2010 scheduled for December in Thailand. Myanmar has been participating in the cricket tournaments since 2006, winning Spirit of Cricket Award in ACC U-19 Challenge Cup, the report said.
