Guwahati, June 15 (ANI): The northeast has contributed greatly to the success of Indian sport, and a new addition to this great tradition is Assamese boxer Shiva Thapa.
Seventeen-year-old Thapa, hails from Birubari in Guwahati District and has raised hopes in the Indian sporting arena.
He first donned boxing gloves at seven and has now won several national and international titles.
In 2008, he won the Hyder Aliyeve Cup in Russia and bagged a bronze at World Junior Boxing Championship in Armenia in 2009.
Shiva recently also won silver at the World Youth Boxing Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan.
For his success, Shiva was felicitated by the Assam Olympic Association in Guwahati.
"The Assam Olympic Association is giving its warm wishes to Shiva Thapa for his incredible achievement. We are very proud of him," said Hemanta Kalita, General Secretary, Assam Olympic Association.
"Last year, he was not being able to win but this time he got silver medal, which is a matter of pride for Assam and the country. We are proud of him," Kalita added.
A student of class XII, Shiva balances his rigorous training schedule at the Army Sports Institute in Pune and his studies as well.
Like every young boxer, he too hopes of win an Olympic medal for the country.
"I have qualified the Youth Olympic Games of Singapore. I am trying very hard, and for that we are having training camps at the Army Sports Unit in Pune under chief coach, G.Manmohana," said Thapa.
"For the first two months,we are going to have training camp there. Here I tried my level best and got silver, but in the Youth Olympic Games of Singapore, I will try my level best to bag a gold," he added.
He idolizes Mike Tyson, and feels that skills and intelligence have equal importance in a physical sport like boxing.
His list of idols also include sportspersons from the northeast like MC Mary Kom, Dingko Singh, L Sarita Devi and Som Bahadur.
Shiva's achievements are now serving as an inspiration to many youngsters in Assam. By Peter Alex Todd (ANI)
