Liverpool owners say they have court order to stop sale

Thu, Oct 14 10 04:16 AM

Liverpool owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have been granted a temporary restraining order by a Texas court prohibiting the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures (NESV), Hicks's spokesman said on Wednesday.

A statement said the American pair had filed a lawsuit against the club's lender Royal Bank of Scotland, Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton and other board members.

The statement added that they were also also seeking $1.6 billion in damages for the "epic swindle" of trying to sell the club at a knockdown price.

Earlier in the day, the High Court in London ruled that Hicks and Gillett could no longer block the sale of the Premier League club. It was not immediately clear how the Texan restraining order affected the London ruling.

The statement from Hicks's New York-based spokesman Mark Semer came as the Liverpool board was meeting in London to discuss the sale, with NESV owner John W. Henry in attendance.
