Romario attends closing ceremony of Friendship Cup

Kolkata, July 20 (PTI) Brazilian football star Romario today paid a visit to the city along with his companion Branco, leaving thousands of fans mesmerised at the Police Athletic Club ground here. In the city with another Brazilian ace Branco for Bengali TV reality show, Romario, the 1994 World Cup Golden Ball winner, took part in the closing ceremony of the Kolkata Police Coca-Cola Friendship Cup that saw participation from 6,000 players from 462 teams. Eight players have been selected from the meet who will be given special training at German club FC Bayern Munich. Addressing the crowd in Portugese through an interpretor, he said: "It''s a great pleasure to be here. My congratulations to the players who will go to the FC Bayern Munich. "I am honoured to be part of this. In my capacity, I would like to contribute a minimum possible amount for the kids who need so much," he concluded before leaving the arena with a standing ovation from the football-crazy Kolkata crowd that included former Olympians Sailen Manna, PK Banerjee, Chuni Goswami among others. Earlier commissioner of police Gautam Mohan Chakraborty announced Rs 40,000 for the treatment of ailing former Indian player Mohammad Abdus Sattar who is suffering from dementia. PTI TAP ATK
