Bhopal, Jharkhand score big wins

Pune, Sep 29 (PTI) Bhopal boys and Jharkhand girls went on a goal scoring spree in their respective matches at the 35th Junior National Hockey Championship here today. On both the occasions, it was the teams from Tripura, who had to face the wrath. Bhopal had things much their own way as they crushed a hapless Tripura 25-0 in Pool ''H'' match at the Major Dhyanchand ground this morning. The players mainly responsible for Bhopal''s huge win were Md Sahir and Azam Beg who scored five goals each. Meanwhile, at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, the girl''s from Jharkhand dictated terms as they romped to a 22-0 win against Tripura. Silvanu Massur (6), Sushma Tiru (4) and Anila Baig (4) were the main goal-scorers for Jharkhand. Bhopal, who had beaten West Bengal 6-0 yesterday and play Baroda in the final pool match tomorrow, are assured of a berth in the pre-quarter-finals. Even a draw will be sufficient for Bhopal to advance. Earlier, West Bengal lads defeated Baroda 12-0 in a match of the same pool. In one of the most exciting and well-contested match in the competition, Delhi got the better of Pondicherry by a narrow 2-1 margin. Delhi captain Amit Lochab converted a penalty corner in the 13th minute to put Delhi in front before Podicherry skipper K Rajesh scored from a field effort six minutes later to restore parity. But Delhi seemed determined to win Sidharth Shanker found the target in the 38th minute to ensure Delhi snatch all the three points. Delhi who had defeated Chattisgarh 3-1 on Tuesday are as good as through to the next round. Maharashtra put behind their opening match blues when they lost 0-11 to IOC on Tuesday, to blank Gujarat 16-0 in a Pool D match.
