Hewitt says he's still got a lot of grand slams left in him

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 02 10 01:10 PM

Melbourne, Jan.2 (ANI): Australian tennis star Lleyton Hewitt still believes that he has a lot to achieve in the sport, including grabbing some more grand slams.

When his troublesome hip finally gave way at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 he was faced with a hard decision, to go on or give it away. It had been seven years since he sat atop the rankings and six years since he lifted a grand slam trophy.

These - the big prizes - had always been what motivated him. The other great motivator had been Davis Cup but that, too, was a past glory.

"I could have gone through life, retired from tennis, and it [the hip] wouldn't have been a problem," the Daily Telegraph quotes him, as saying.

He had a lot of points to defend and knew that the comeback from surgery would most likely see him drop outside the top 100 (he fell as far as 108).

He had a wife and was expecting his second child, he was sick of travelling and waking up in hotels without them.

What made him keep going when everything seemed to point him in the opposite direction?

"I still think there are grand slams still in me," he says.

"If you keep putting yourself in that position, you will get your chance. There is still unfinished business," he added.

With long-time fired Nathan Healey as his coach and David Drysdale as his manager, Hewitt believes he has the required backup to see him achieve his remaining goals in tennis.

"It has taken the best guys to beat me, basically every time," he says. "If you keep putting yourself in that position, time after time laying it on the line, eventually you will get your chance and it is going to open up. There is still unfinished business," he says.

Now ranked 22, he believes again that he can beat the very best, although it is six years now since he last vanquished Federer.

Asked how he wished to be remembered when his career is over, Hewitt said as a fierce competitor, who never gave up and produced his best when representing his country. (ANI)

MSD bats for specialists

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 02 10 12:24 PM

Mumbai, Jan. 1 -- The New Year was not even 24 hours old when India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni walked up to face the media. And aware that the 2009 exploits of his team were already confined to the memory keeper's diary, the 28-year-old spent little time on the positives of the year gone by and instead spoke about the challenges ahead. It was no surprise then that the point of discussion revolved around fielding and bowling, on the eve of the team's departure for Bangaldesh, where they will play a tri series that also involves Sri Lanka and then two Test matches against the hosts. The Indian team was found wanting in both departments during the recently concluded one-day series against Sri Lanka and Dhoni was quick to emphasise the need for specialist coaches to assist Gary Kirsten. "It definitely helps to have a specialised coach when it comes to bowling department and fielding is concerned," Dhoni said. "Currently Gary has to look after everything. Being the overall coach he has to sit and talk to batsman, bowlers, fielders, get the strategy done, team building and everything." While the team is without a bowling coach since the Board sacked Venkatesh Prasad earlier last year, Australian Mike Young worked with the team during the Sri Lanka ODIs but would not be available for the Bangladesh tour. "As far as I know, Mike won't be available for this series. But it was interesting with the amount of time the team spent with him. He didn't come in with a lot of ideas. He was interested in knowing what was happening and where we are positioned. He started very slow," explained Dhoni. "But it's important to keep on going with that. He won't be around but still with the help of other support we will try to put in a lot of effort in fielding." The skipper insisted that he was at a loss for the reasons behind the fielding slump. "If you have some weak fielders and if they are the ones dropping catches then you can still work on them. But when your best fielders are dropping catches then you can't really do much, because they are the best that you have got."

About the bowlers, Dhoni said he was concerned with their performance at the death but felt that things would fall together soon. "In the bowling department we are at a low point as a unit. But we all know our bowlers are very talented and it's a matter of time that they will get back in form."

London, January 2 (ANI): Cheryl Cole has been tipped to be the most popular WAG to bag the first Page 1 appearance at this year's World Cup.

The 26-year-old star will be seen cheering for her Chelsea partner when the run for the title begins in South Africa on June 11.

Other star wives expected to make it to the matches include Wayne Rooney's wife Coleen and Peter Crouch's partner Abbey Clancy. (ANI)

Elin Nordegren 'heads to the Alps to heal her heartbreak'

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 02 10 11:24 AM

Melbourne, Jan 2 (ANI): Elin Nordegren has left hubby Tiger Woods behind in the US to take a secret trip to the snowy French Alps, it has emerged.

The Sun reported that the Swedish stunner gave the golfing star the cold shoulder.

According to reports, Elin is seeking refuge in a 6,000dollar-a-night chalet.

Elin, 29, is holed up in the chalet near the posh French resort of Chamonix. She's there with her twin sister Josephin and five trusted pals, reports The Daily Telegraph.

A family friend told The Sun: "Elin wanted to take her family and close friends away from the minefield Tiger has created by his behavior.

"She has been absolutely torn to pieces by what he has done to her. But she still sees a future with Tiger because of the beautiful children they have.

"She told him she needed a lengthy time apart to reflect on how they might possibly salvage the marriage."

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the sex scandal could see the golfer's antics being made into a film.

Hollywood producers are keen to tell the story in a made-for-TV movie. Jerry Maguire star, Oscar-winning Cuba Gooding Jr, 41, is said to be one of those being lined-up to play the golfer.(ANI)
