Tour de France champion Contador suspended after failing drug test

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 12:27 PM

London, Sep 30 (ANI): Tour de France champion Alberto Contador has been provisionally suspended by the International Cycling Union (UCI) for failing an anti-doping test during this year's race.

The UCI confirmed that only a "very small concentration" of the drug had been found and that the case warranted "further scientific investigation" because the Cologne laboratory that detected the substance is known to be able to detect the tiniest traces of drugs.

If Contador is found guilty, he will be banned from competition and could face losing the 2010 title.

Contador, who has won three Tour de France races, tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol on July 21 in Pau, during the rest day.

Clenbuterol is often used to treat breathing disorders such as asthma, and is a powerful weight-loss and muscle-building drug, The Telegraph reports. Alberto Contador is affected by a doping control at the last Tour de France on July 21, where it was found the substance clenbuterol," a statement from Contador's press officer said.

"From the time of the first communication from the UCI, August 24, Alberto Contador alleged food contamination as the only possible explanation of what happened and has been turned over to the cyclist authorities since then in the confidence that this very serious problem could be clarified, which now is public," it said.

"The experts consulted so far have agreed also that this is a food contamination case, especially considering the number of tests passed by Alberto Contador during the Tour de France, making it possible to define precisely both the time the emergence of the substance as the tiny amount detected, ruling out any other source or intentionality.

"Alberto Contador will offer ... a press conference in order to give his version of what happened to the public," the statement said.

Contador won the Tour by just 39 seconds from Andy Schleck. (ANI)

Estudiantes win La Plata derby to go top in Argentina

Thu, Sep 30 10 10:17 AM

Estudiantes went top of the Argentine Apertura championship with a 2-0 home win over Gimnasia in the La Plata derby on Wednesday in a result which prompted losing coach Diego Cocca to resign.

Goals by defender Federico Fernandez in the 37th minute and captain Juan Sebastian Veron, with a 45th-minute penalty, gave Estudiantes the win that puts them two points clear at the top after eight matches.

Estudiantes, South American champions last year, have 19 points, Velez Sarfield 17 and San Lorenzo 15 in the top three places.

Gimnasia, one from bottom with five points and only one win, had midfielder Fabian Rinaudo sent off two minutes from time for a second booking.

"We tried everything we could but a change of air is necessary (for Gimnasia) to get out of this situation," Cocca told reporters at the Quilmes ground where Estudiantes have been playing their home games while their stadium is refurbished.

"We'll be urging the team on so they stay in the first division," a visibly downcast Cocca added.

The match went off peacefully with only home fans allowed to buy tickets as a security measure due to the potential for fan violence at the La Plata "clasico".

Cocca is the fourth coach to have lost his job so far this season after Independiente's Daniel Garnero, Antonio Mohamed of Colon and Huracan's Hector Rivoira all departed last week.

At the weekend, Estudiantes are away to San Lorenzo while Gimnasia host struggling title holders Argentinos Juniors.

PCB chief withdraws remarks against English players

Thu, Sep 30 10 09:41 AM

London, Sep 30 (PTI) Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt has withdrawn his remarks in which he had alleged that England player had thrown the third one-dayer against Pakistan at the Oval but maintained that he was misunderstood. Butt had said England players were paid "enormous amounts of money" to lose the third ODI match at the Oval. Responding to his remarks, the England and Wales Cricket Board had threatened legal action and demanded an unreserved apology from him. Butt met his ECB counterpart Giles Clarke in London yesterday and both the boards issued a joint statement. "I wish personally and on behalf of the Pakistan Cricket Board to withdraw the comments I made concerning the England and Wales Cricket Board and each of the England players who played in the NatWest One Day International at the Brit Insurance Oval on Friday 17 September. "It is regrettable that there was a misunderstanding arising from my comments," the statement said. Butt said he "never intended to question the behaviour and integrity of the England players nor the ECB nor to suggest that any of them were involved in any corrupt practices or in a conspiracy against Pakistan cricket." Butt had earlier said that he was merely stating what the bookies were saying. He now said, "I wish to make it clear that I have never seen any evidence of any wrong doing by any England player or the ECB at any time. "I deeply and sincerely regret that my statements have been interpreted to cast doubt upon the good names of the England players and the ECB and hope that this public withdrawal will draw a line under the matter." In the same statement ECB and the England players who played at the Brit Insurance Oval warmly said they "welcome this withdrawal and now regard the matter closed." ECB chairman Giles Clarke confirmed that following this statement he is continuing in his role as the ICC Pakistan Task Team chairman.

Wizards owner fined $100,000 for talking salary cap

Thu, Sep 30 10 07:57 AM

The National Basketball Association (NBA) fined Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis $100,000 on Wednesday for making unauthorized public comments regarding the league's collective bargaining negotiations.

The Wizards owner told a business audience earlier on Wednesday that the NBA, which is working on a new labour deal, will soon have a hard salary cap similar to the model used by the National Hockey League (NHL).

NBA teams are currently allowed to exceed the salary cap as long as they pay a luxury tax penalty. The league's collective bargaining agreement is set to expire on June 30.

Leonsis, who has been the majority owner of the NHL's Washington Capitals since 1999, completed his purchase of the Wizards in June.

Bernard has IndyCar back on fast track

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 07:17 AM

As he was chauffeured around Texas Motor Speedway in a two-seater car by triple Indy 500 winner Johnny Rutherford at a scary 170 mph (273 kph), Randy Bernard was struck by the realisation that the racing driver's life was not for him.

While it seems odd that the new IndyCar CEO has no great need for speed, Bernard is quick to point out that neither did he feel the urge to climb on to the back of an angry, snorting bull during the years he spent as boss of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) circuit.

"I told Johnny Rutherford: 'In 15 years I never even got on a mechanical bull and in three months you have me riding in the back of car like this'," Bernard told Reuters. "I cannot believe I did it.

"I always thought: 'I could be a race car driver'. I just didn't realise I would be so fearful of speed, going that fast. It blew my mind. It put things in a whole different perspective for me."

Bernard had never seen an IndyCar race before moving into his Indianapolis office but says he is quickly getting up to speed.

After taking over a sport that is a tail-ender in a crowded and competitive North American marketplace, Bernard wants to steer IndyCar back to the front of the grid.

He plans to use many of the tools and lessons learned while transforming bull-riding from a cowboy pastime seen at country fairs into a mainstream sport with a worldwide television audience and millions of dollars in sponsorship and prize money.

When Bernard took control of the PBR in 1995 the total sponsorship and advertising was $360,000.

Before he left, the circuit had cowboys from across the United States and Canada, as well as Brazil, Australia and Mexico, competing for more than $11 million in prize money.

DYING TRADITION

"I came into (bull riding) and saw this little piece of coal and was able to work on it and hopefully it is a diamond," said Bernard. "The word rodeo became a dirty word for us. We wanted to be considered bull riding.

"To me rodeo was someplace you took your grandkids to show them a tradition that is dying. I wanted to make it rock-and-roll, cool and fun and entertaining and you couldn't do that with the word rodeo, it had too much negativity attached to it.

"It's a process that took time. It took us 10 years and it's going to be the same thing here."

Efforts to return IndyCar to its glory days in the U.S. have been slow.

The bitter, decade-long feud that split the sport into two warring series (Indy Racing League and Champ Car) until reunification in 2008 left deep scars among American motorsport fans, with many migrating to NASCAR for their high-octane thrills.

What emerged from the wreckage was a series filled with unfamiliar faces.

Long gone were iconic names of American motorsport, the Andrettis, Foyts and Unsers, who used to battle wheel-to-wheel against the world's best such as Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, Emerson Fittipaldi, Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve.

Last season no U.S. driver won an IndyCar race and when the current season began only three Americans had full-time rides.

Before the split, Cars had a firm foothold in the U.S. market and eyed worldwide expansion.

The IndyCar threat was such that F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone warned tracks and promoters against fraternising with the enemy, threatening sanctions for those who did.

BEST DRIVERS

Bernard, in the job for less than a year, has gone on the offensive, boldly firing warning shots across the bows of NASCAR and Formula One, saying he plans to make IndyCar the destination of choice for the world's top drivers.

"Fans are not going to spend $50 to $75 on a ticket unless they are guaranteed they are going to be watching the very best in the world," he said. "We've got to make sure we can tell our fans that we've got the very best, fastest, most versatile race car drivers in the world."

Already this year, Bernard has unveiled the 'Car of the Future' designed to make the sport more competitive, affordable (slashing costs by up to 40 percent) and attractive to fans by bringing in new aerodynamic kits and designs.

The series has also found an enthusiastic partner in title sponsor IZOD, the clothing company signing a six-year deal worth a reported $12 million.

"He's being as careful as he can but he's not wasting time and that's our style too," IZOD CEO Michael Kelly told Reuters. "We like IndyCar, we see it as a stock that is under-valued. We didn't like NASCAR, I felt it was post-peak. Fundamentally the product is good."

Bernard has quickly won the support of team owners, including influential heavy-hitters such as Roger Penske and Michael Andretti.

He will be judged, though, on whether he can win back fans.

"We know in the mid '90s we lost 15 to 20 million fans," he said. "In my opinion that's low-lying fruit; how do we attract those back and assure them Indy car is back?

"They all didn't die. They are out there somewhere."

South Africa will miss Semenya

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 06:21 AM

South African chef de mission Patience Martina Shikwambana on Tuesday said the African nation will sorely miss 800m world champion Caster Semenya, ruled out of the Commonwealth Games due to a back injury.

"We were expecting to get a sure-short medal from her in the Commonwealth Games but I guess we cannot help it as theSouth Africa team Chief Medical Officer, after assessing her, confirmed that she would not be able to make it for theevent," said Shikwanbana.

Shuaib Manjra, South Africa's team CMO, said that Semenya underwent a MRI scan in Johannesburg yesterday, which confirmed a back injury. So she was forced to pull out of the mega event. The withdrawal of the champion, however, was always on the cards as she was not feeling comfortable during the last few races. Earlier, South African men's 800m world champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi was also ruled out of the Games because of a hamstring injury. However, despite the absence of the star athletes, Sikhwambana seemed confident of South Africa's chances during the October 3-14 Games. "We are expecting to get medals in all sporting disciplines," the chef de mission said.

Asked to specify the disciplines in which South Africa stand a good chance, she said, "We are definitely banking on athletics and swimming for a number of medals." Talking about the Games Village, Shikwambana expressed satisfaction with the overall arrangements and facilities but added that there are a few challenges. "We are happy with the overall facilities but there are a few challenges here and there," she said, refusing to elaborate further.

Meanwhile, the South African contingent became the fourth Commonwealth country to hoist its flag at the Games Village today. Over the last two days Norfolk Islands, Scotland and Tanzania had officially hoisted their flags at the Games Village. The members of the South African team, clad in their green and white jerseys, enjoyed the flag hoisting ceremony and cultural programmes, and had a good time. "It was a very nice show and we really enjoyed ourselves. We also posed for a lot of pictures," said Sanja Elena Coetzee, an athlete.

Samoa banking on rugby to provide maiden Games gold

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 06:19 AM

With a world champion team and with one of its leading rivals not allowed in the competition, Samoa is banking on the rugby sevens competition to provide its first Commonwealth Games gold medal. The two-day Commonwealth Games tournament, which draws together most of the best sevens teams in the world, has garnered more significance this year as a distant prelude to 2016 when rugby sevens will become an Olympic sport for the first time.

Most teams may already have begun to scent Olympic gold and New Delhi offers a chance to test themselves in a games environment. The Samoan team, led by International Rugby Board Player of the Year Mikaele Pesamino and Coach of the Year Stephen Betham, captured the IRB world sevens title in 2010, winning four of eight tournaments in the series including the most prestigious in Hong Kong.

That success gives Samoa strong claims to the gold medal in New Delhi, although it will have to overcome defending champion New Zealand, who have been gold medalists at all three games since sevens was introduced in 1998.

The New Zealand team may have been further strengthened by the inclusion of All Blacks Zac Guildford, Hosea Gear, Ben Smith and Liam Messam and will start as gold medal favorite. Samoa had a serious setback when veteran playmaker Uale Mai signed a contract to play for the El Salvador club in Spain and was forced to quit its squad. Mai has been one of the key figures in Samoan sevens for many years and his defection is a heavy blow.

The sevens team may be not only Samoa's but the Pacific Islands' best gold medal hope in New Delhi - and the first for a Pacific island nation since 2002 - though Samoa has high hopes for weightlifting sisters Ele and Mary Opeloge. New Zealand's preparation for the Commonwealth Games sevens competition has been disrupted by injury, the most serious of which was to All Black backrower Adam Thomson but also affected captain D.J. Forbes, Gear and playmaker Tomasi Cama. Tietjens seldom has the luxury of selecting All Blacks for his sevens squads and the availability of Gear, Messam, Smith and Guildford significantly strengthens the New Zealand team, though they lack sevens experience.

"The game is made for guys like Hosea, Zac and Ben but the first thing 15s players assume is that there's a lot more space. It's not as easy as that," captain Forbes said. "There's a lot of work to be done and a lot of skill sets that evolve through playing a lot of sevens," he added.

Eto'o bags a hat-trick for Inter, Barcelona draw

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 05:17 AM

Samuel Eto'o scored a scintillating hat-trick for holders Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday but Lionel Messi's magic went missing as Barcelona laboured to a draw with their Russian bogey team.

While Rafa Benitez celebrated a 4-0 victory over Werder Bremen and his first home win in Europe as Inter coach, Pep Guardiola's Barcelona were forced to scrap for a 1-1 draw at Rubin Kazan in Group D.

Manchester United savoured a rare win in Spain when they beat Valencia 1-0 to go joint-top of Group C with Rangers, 1-0 winners over Bursaspor, while troubled Olympique Lyon won 3-1 at Hapoel Tel Aviv to lead Group B.

While Eto'o was lighting up the San Siro, Tottenham Hotspur's Rafael van der Vaart chalked up a different kind of triple when he missed a penalty, scored and was sent off in a 4-1 home win against Twente Enschede, taking his side level with Inter at the top of Group A.

There was no rivalling Eto'o for the performance of the night, as the Cameroon striker scored two in a six-minute first half burst, helped set up Wesley Sneijder for Inter's third and completed his hat-trick nine minutes from time.

"I don't know if it was their birthday today but we gave them too many presents," seethed Werder coach Thomas Schaaf.

BARCELONA BEHIND

Where Inter shone as brightly as Eto'o's brilliant yellow boots, Barcelona struggled with World Player of the Year Messi returning from an ankle injury.

The Spanish champions had to come from behind to salvage a point against the same unglamorous opponents who stunned the then European champions 2-1 at the Nou Camp last season before a 0-0 home draw.

Messi, who scored twice in Barcelona's opening group D match, came off the bench for the last half-hour but was unable to make the difference with Rubin keeper Sergei Ryzhikov denying the Argentine wizard late on.

Both goals came from the penalty spot, with captain Christian Noboa putting the home side ahead in the 30th minute and David Villa equalising on the hour.

FC Copenhagen pushed Barcelona off the top of the group, with striker Dame N'Doye returning to haunt his former club Panathinaikos, who had former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva sent off, in a surprise 2-0 away win.

Villa's former club Valencia, top of La Liga, failed to convert possession into goals and paid the price against United.

With Wayne Rooney sidelined by injury but Rio Ferdinand returning, United's new Mexican signing Javier 'Little Pea' Hernandez came off the bench to break the deadlock with a clinical finish in the 85th minute of an uninspiring match.

"When he takes his chances it's like shelling peas, with either foot," said manager Alex Ferguson, savouring what was only United's second win in 19 away matches in Europe against Spanish opponents.

PENALTIES GALORE

There were penalties galore, and plenty of rain, at Tottenham as the English side celebrated their first home game in the Champions League proper with their first win.

Dutchman Van der Vaart proved the tormentor for his compatriots before getting sent off with 29 minutes remaining.

Roman Pavlyuchenko made no mistake with two spot kicks either side of a goal from Twente's Nacer Chadli and Gareth Bale wrapped up the scoring five minutes from time, with Spurs now level on four points with Inter, their next opponents.

In Group B, Schalke 04 netted two late goals in Gelsenkirchen to beat Benfica 2-0.

Lyon's 3-1 win over Hapoel Tel Aviv in the other Group B game took them top with maximum points and gave embattled coach Claude Puel a welcome respite from his domestic woes.

Brazilian midfielder Michel Bastos struck two of the French side's goals while the Hapoel consolation came via a 79th minute penalty from goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

Bastos gives Puel brief respite from home woes

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 04:57 AM

Embattled Olympic Lyon coach Claude Puel gained a welcome if all too fleeting respite from his domestic woes on Wednesday with his team's 3-1 win over Hapoel Tel Aviv in Champions League Group B.

Puel, who is under fire for his side's poor start to their Ligue 1 campaign, had already turned his attention to a demanding match against Nancy as he appraised his team's performance.

"It is good to have picked up six points from two Champions League matches but we do differentiate between the Champions League and the domestic league," he told a news conference.

"The Champions League is special but we still have a very difficult domestic fixture at the weekend against Nancy."

Brazilian midfielder Michel Bastos, who hit the only goal in Lyon's win over Schalke in their opening game, struck with a penalty after seven minutes after Hapoel captain Walid Badier brought down Jimmy Briand.

Lyon doubled their lead in the 36th minute when Bastos blasted in from 25 metres following a corner.

Hapoel, making their home debut in the competition at their compact Bloomfield Stadium, got one back through goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama's 79th-minute penalty before substitute Miralem Pjanic sealed Lyon's win in stoppage time.

STEAMY NIGHT

The technical skills of Hapoel's players were rarely in evidence as Lyon's speed in attack and assurance in defence did not allow the hosts to take advantage throughout the match, played on a hot, humid Tel Aviv night.

Hapoel did threaten following a melee in the Lyon area but the French side went 2-0 up when Bastos let fly with an unstoppable shot that fizzed past Enyeama.

Hapoel, making their home debut in the competition at their compact Bloomfield Stadium, got one back through goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama's 79th-minute penalty before substitute Miralem Pjanic sealed Lyon's win in stoppage time.

Puel said the heat had taken its toll on his players but praised them for the extra effort they had made.

"We were worried by the efforts by the players in the hot conditions and we will now need to rest and prepare for our next match against Nancy," Puel said.

Hapoel coach Eli Guttman said Lyon were the best team in Group B and, although disappointed with the result, he was pleased with the way his players performed but added that at this level mistakes were often punished.

"I am disappointed that it ended 3-1 but I am pleased and satisified with the effort of my players. I am pleased that we managed to hold the ball a lot more thand we did against Benfica," Guttman said.

"I am clearly disappointed, the problem for (an underdog team) in this sort of match is the second goal because there is a price to be paid at this level when a player is out of position."

Wasteful Barcelona held in Kazan again

Thu, Sep 30 10 01:57 AM

Russian side Rubin Kazan continued to frustrate Barcelona by holding the Spanish side to a 1-1 draw in Champions League Group D on Wednesday.

Rubin, who took four out of six points off Barcelona in the group stage last season, went ahead when captain Christian Noboa converted a 30th-minute penalty after Barca defender Dani Alves brought down Vitaly Kaleshin.

Spain striker David Villa equalised from the spot on the hour after Andres Iniesta was fouled inside the box.

Rubin, who stunned the then European champions 2-1 in the Nou Camp before holding them to a 0-0 home draw last season, could have snatched an unlikely victory three minutes from time but substitute Obafemi Martins hit the post.

The Catalans, with Lionel Messi on the bench following an ankle injury, wasted a host of chances in the first half with striker Pedro being the main culprit.

Barca introduced Messi shortly after scoring the equaliser and the World Player of the Year had a chance to give the visitors victory late in the game but Rubin keeper Sergei Ryzhikov averted the danger.

Butt withdraws corruption allegations

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 01:37 AM

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt withdrew on Wednesday allegations of match-fixing against the England team during the third one-day international at the Oval on Sept. 17.

Butt had been threatened with legal action from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) unless he unreservedly apologised for his suggestion that the England team had taken bribes to lose the match.

The withdrawal in a joint statement from the two boards followed an announcement from the International Cricket Council (ICC) that Pakistan test captain Salman Butt had appealed against a suspension for spot-fixing.

The ICC said pace bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif had yet to appeal against the suspensions which followed an investigation into newspaper reports that they had arranged for deliberate no-balls to be bowled in the Lord's test last month. All three have said they are innocent.

Ijaz Butt's comments came after the suspensions and an ICC announcement that it was investigating Pakistan's innings at the Oval after receiving information from a British newspaper about an allegedly suspicious scoring pattern.

Butt and other Pakistani officials were angered by the second decision and, in a television interview before the fourth match at Lord's, Butt said there had been "loud and clear talk in bookies" circles that some English players were paid enormous amounts of money to lose (the Oval) match".

REGRETTABLE MISUNDERSTANDING

Although Butt said in a later radio interview with the BBC that he was only passing on information he had received from bookmakers, the ECB called the comments defamatory and England captain Andrew Strauss said his team had considered pulling out of the Lord's game.

Last Thursday, the day after England had won the one-day series 3-2, the ECB said it would take immediate legal proceedings against Butt unless he gave a "full and unreserved apology".

Butt said he wished to withdraw his allegations on behalf of himself and the PCB.

"It is regrettable that there was a misunderstanding arising from my comments," Butt said.

"I would like to make it quite clear that in the statements which I made that I never intended to question the behaviour and integrity of the England players nor the ECB nor to suggest that any of them were involved in any corrupt practices or in a conspiracy against Pakistan cricket."

Butt's apology was welcomed by the ECB and the England team who said they now regarded the matter as closed.

ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said an independent tribunal would be convened as soon as possible to hear Salman Butt's appeal.

He also told a teleconference with Pakistani reporters that calls for Pakistan to be suspended from international cricket were misguided.

"I don't believe an entire team or entire nation should be held responsible," Lorgat said.

PCB chief withdraws remarks against English players

Thu, Sep 30 10 12:37 AM

London, Sept 29 (PTI) Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt today said he was withdrawing his remarks alleging that England players had thrown the third one-day international match against Pakistan at the Oval last Friday. Butt had charged that England players were paid "enormous amounts of money" to lose the third ODI match at the Oval. Responding to his remarks, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had threatened legal action and demanded "unreserved" apology from him. After a meeting with his ECB counterpart Giles Clarke today, Butt said that he never "intended to question the integrity of the England players nor the ECB nor to suggest that any of them were involved in any corrupt practices or in a conspiracy against Pakistan cricket", a joint statement issued by ECB and PCB said. "It is regrettable that there was a misunderstanding arising from my comments", Butt said and ECB, in its turn, declared that it now considered the matter as closed. But said "I wish personally and on behalf of the Pakistan Cricket Board to withdraw the comments I made concerning the England and Wales Cricket Board and each of the England players who played in the NatWest One Day International at the Brit Insurance Oval on Friday 17 September". He said "I wish to make it clear that I have never seen any evidence of any wrong doing by any England player or the ECB at any time". "I deeply and sincerely regret that my statements have been interpreted to cast doubt upon the good names of the England players and the ECB and hope that this public withdrawal will draw a line under the matter", Butt said. The joint statement said the ECB and the England players, who played at the Oval match, "warmly welcome this (Butt''s) withdrawal and now regard the matter as closed". (more) PTI

Course handles worst of Welsh weather, more rain to come

Published>Thu, Sep 30 10 12:19 AM

Celtic Manor's Ryder Cup layout was given a thorough soaking on Wednesday and with more Atlantic fronts on the way over the next few days players, fans - and the course drainage - will be tested to the full.

Thousands of brightly coloured golf umbrellas sprouted across the scenic Usk Valley as mud-splattered fans braved dismal morning conditions to watch the second day of practice.

The paved walkways that wind their way around the course enabled spectators to negotiate the course in relative comfort but there were some furrowed brows among the players.

Long rough has become even more penal now that it is saturated and the greens, while remaining playable despite the deluge, will become much slower than players would expect, particularly the Americans used to fast PGA conditions.

"I think hopefully if the weather is similar to today, I think the Europeans could have an advantage," Europe debutant Ross Fisher told reporters after drying out on Wednesday.

"A lot of the Americans don't really play too much golf in the rain. I don't think the American guys have seen rough quite like it around the greens and when it's wet, it's pretty tough to control your ball and get it close to the pin."

Showers are forecast on Thursday with heavy rain predicted for Friday's opening fourballs and foursomes and again for Sunday's singles.

However, the Twenty Ten course was designed especially for the Ryder Cup and the drainage system is equal to anywhere in the world, according to Celtic Manor's director of golf courses Jim McKenzie who is confident his 120 staff are up to the task.

"We've spent a lot of money and a lot of time and effort over the last three years on drainage," he told Reuters.

"We've got great drainage on the fairways. We've top-dressed fairways heavily with sand. Indeed we've built the nine new holes with sand incorporated into the top soil.

"In 2009 during the Wales Open we had three inches of rain in a 26-hour period which finished at six o-clock on the last day on the Sunday and with the combination of the drainage, a bit of good luck, a two-tee start, we managed to complete all 72 holes within 25 minutes of the scheduled finishing time.

"There were golf courses closed that day from the Midlands all the way down to Cornwall but we managed to play the event. We have no real major concerns. We are preparing for rain, and anything else is a bonus."

The one thing that does keep McKenzie awake at night is the fog that can roll of the surrounding hills and which delayed the action on Tuesday morning.

"The one thing I do worry about is fog. There's nothing much we can do about that," he said.

American stalwart Jim Furyk joked on Wednesday that the rough was so deep they could lose some buggies in it, let alone balls, but McKenzie insisted it was fair.

"We used 20,000 pounds worth of fertiliser in the summer to regulate the rough because at the Wales Open there was a criticism that it was inconsistent," he said.

"I think the course is now playing the way the architect intended it to be."

"Congratulations to Mr Dalmiya for finally getting BCCI to withdraw there case," tweeted Modi. The BCCI today withdrew the fund embezzlement case against Dalmiya and also lifted a four-year-old expulsion imposed on him, clearing the decks for his return to national cricket administration. The 70-year-old former ICC President had been a pariah in Indian cricket administration for four years after he was accused of embezzling the 1996 World Cup funds in a lawsuit filed in the Bombay High Court in 2006.

Jharkhand Wrestling Association secretary expelled

Wed, Sep 29 10 11:51 PM

Ranchi, Sep 29 (PTI) Jharkhand Olympic Association today expelled state wrestling association (JWA) general secretary Bhola Nath Singh for filing complaints against senior JOC members with the state Vigilance Bureau. "The JOC working committee has expelled him (Bhola Nath Singh) and also dis-affiliated Jharkhand Wrestling Association (JWA)," said National Games Organising Committee (NGOC) secretary S M Hasmi. The decision was taken in the wake of Singh filing a complaint against Hasmi, NGOC working chairman R K Anand, treasurer Madhukant Pathak and ex-director of the sports, P C Mishra. Hitting back at the JOC''s decision, Singh said "I am the general secretary of JWA and will remain so as it is affiliated to Indian Wrestling Association, and JOA has no power." "We are organising senior national wrestling championship in December here," he said. "I have complained against them only after the High Court directed me to approach the vigilance bureau after I moved the court in connection with massive monetary irregularities in the purchase of equipment and construction of infrastructure, Singh added. "If they think speaking the truth is rebellion against them, I will be happy to be called a rebel," Singh said. In his complaint, Singh had alleged that purchase of sports equipment was in excess of actual requirement without any tender for the 34th National Games, earlier slated to be held in Jharkhand. The state government had already expressed its inability to hold the Games, scheduled from December 9, stating that the event might clash with the dates of the proposed panchayat elections.

ICC receives appeal against provisional suspension from Butt

Wed, Sep 29 10 11:37 PM

Karachi, Sep 29 (PTI) The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed receiving the appeal of Pakistan''s Test captain, Salman Butt against his provisional suspension but said it was yet to get similar appeals from the two other suspended players, Muhammad Aamir and Muhammad Asif. "Under the terms of the code, the ICC Code of Conduct Commission chairman Michael Beloff QC will determine the issue of whether the provisional suspension should remain in place until the substantive hearing on the charges," ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said. "We are still waiting for appeals from the other two players," Lorgat added. Lorgat stated that the ICC Anti-Corruption Code provides the opportunity for the players to appeal against the imposition of the provisional suspension and the ICC shall convene an independent hearing as quickly and as efficiently as possible. He said the ICC was in the process of finalising the independent tribunal to hear the appeals and will try to be as expeditious as possible. "We want to do this as quickly as possible," Lorgat said. The three players were suspended provisionally by the ICC earlier this month after allegations emerged that they had accepted bribes to do spot fixing in the fourth Test against England at the Lord''s in late August. The imposition of the provisional suspension followed an investigation by the ICC''s Anti Corruption and Security Unit into spot fixing allegations.

I don''t subscribe to the view of banning Pakistan: Lorgat

Wed, Sep 29 10 10:57 PM

Karachi, Sep 29 (PTI) The International Cricket Council has no plans to ban Pakistan from world cricket neither does ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat have any problems with PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. "I don''t subscribe to this view of banning Pakistan . We have to separate a few individuals from a team and nation," Lorgat said today during a telephonic press conference with Pakistani journalists. "If these individuals are proven guilty I don''t believe that an entire nation or team should be held responsible for the acts of individuals. There are provisions in the ICC that allows suspension of members but that is something we are not contemplating by any strech of imagination," Lorgat said. Many former players including ex-England captain, Ian Botham have voiced calls for the ICC to ban Pakistan cricket because of the spot-fixing allegations against three players. Lorgat also spoke about his relation with Ijaz Butt who had called for the removal of Lorgat as ICC CEO. Butt''s strong remarks against Lorgat and the England and Wales Cricket Board came after the ICC had launched an investigation into the third England-Pakistan one-dayer at the Oval following reports of suspicious scoring patterns during the Pakistan innings. "I dont wany to hold Pakistani cricketers responsible for what you might consider poor relations between two individuals and there is none in my book. I say the game is bigger than anyone of us and we are custodians of the game," he said. "I will continue to meet him and will continue to employ tactics to make him believe what I think is right and what he should be doing," Lorgat added. "But he (Butt) has to take responsibility for leading the PCB and for his own actions." Lorgat also believed that Butt should not have gone public with his allegations against the English cricketers. "I would have been more satisfied if Butt had made a direct approach to ACSU and provided whatever information and evidence he had that could have been helpful for relations between PCB and ECB," Lorgat said. Lorgat also said that the ICC didn''t act improperly by giving a statement on investigations into the third ODI. "We have to protect the integrity of the game and it is our stated position. "We will not tolerate any form of corruption within the sport. We adopt a zero tolerance approach and in that respect any information we believe to be creditable we will follow up thoroughly to ensure we keep the game clean," Lorgat said. Asked about the progress of the investigation into the Oval match, he said the ICC didnt name any individual. "We didnt name any individual. We received information which we are currently validating." .

Marseille's security boss slams Chelsea

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 10:47 PM

Olympique Marseille's head of security Guy Cazadamont claimed he was ejected from Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, later protesting about how he was treated by Chelsea's security officers at their Champions League clash.

"I have never experienced such a reception in a European competition," Cazadamont told Marseille's website (www.om.net).

Chelsea later issued a statement on their own website (www.chelseafc.com) saying: "There were a number of incidents at Tuesday evening's game involving the away support, all of which are being fully investigated by Chelsea Football Club."

Cheslea will not comment further until their investigations are complete and "the results have been shared with UEFA."

Cazadamont said on the Marseille website: "I was grabbed round the waist and was eventually thrown out of the stadium.

"I was expecting something else since everything always went pretty well when we played in Liverpool, Bolton, Manchester or Newcastle."

RIPPED OFF

Cazadamont claimed the 22 Marseille stewards, who travelled from France, were not allowed to supervise their fans in the stands and banners were confiscated at the stadium entrance.

He also said some supporters were not allowed to enter the stadium and had their tickets "ripped off".

"I went to the stands and the discussion was heated. But instead of dealing with my Chelsea counterpart, I had to talk to the stewards," said Cazadamont.

The Marseille fans kept up a noisy presence during the match, repeatedly booing and jeering Chelsea's suspended France striker Nicolas Anelka.

Anelka was playing against a French team for the first time since being sent home from the World Cup in South Africa after criticising then-coach Raymond Domenech.

He has subsequently been handed a long ban from the France team by the France Football Federation (FFF) but has also said he would no longer play for France in any case.

Chelsea 2-0 with goals by John Terry and an Anelka penalty.

Rehan promises great show from Pakistan hockey team at CWG

Wed, Sep 29 10 10:27 PM

New Delhi, Sep 29 (PTI) Pakistan hockey captain Rehan Butt, just after his arrival at the Commonwealth Games Village here today, promised a great show from his side at the October 3-14 event. Asked about Pakistan''s chances in Delhi 2010, Rehan stated that there was very stiff competition. "Australia, England and New Zealand are always tough opponents and the match with India, apart from being an emotional challenge, is always a tough game," Rehan said. Pakistan have flirted with success in hockey in the last two editions of the Commonwealth Games, having finished with a bronze in 2002 at Manchester and silver in Melbourne in 2006. In 1998 in Kuala Lumpur, when hockey was introduced to the Games, they however had a pretty poor run, finishing fourth in their group. Asked if Pakistan were targeting gold this time, the skipper said: "We can''t say we will win for sure, but we will definitely give it a good shot. Our aim is to do well in the Guangzhou Asian Games, so a good result here will always be a great plus for us." Asked about how he reacted to reports emanating from India, Rehan said: "As I had said even before leaving Pakistan, efforts of the host city should be supported instead of being criticised." "We have just landed here and have still to get to our rooms, but what see around me is quite beautiful. I am sure that the Village and other facilities will be quite excellent," he added.

Games Village draws mixed reactions from athletes

Wed, Sep 29 10 10:21 PM

New Delhi, Sep 29 (PTI) Though the controversy-marred Commonwealth Games Village seems to have fixed most of its problems, with the majority of athletes and delegates praising the arrangements here, a few disgruntled voices could still be heard around the facility today. Joseph Parker, an athlete from New Zealand, is satisfied with overall facilities, but is unhappy with accommodation. "The work is not yet finished. There are a few things yet to be done. Some toilets are leaking and the drainage is also not very good," he said. "After the shower, the whole bathroom was flooded as there was no proper drainage. We had to put our towels to soak the water," added the New Zealander. The Kiwi, during his earlier visit to the Indian Capital in March, had stayed at a five-star hotel, and asked to compare the star hotel with the Village, he said, "I would say the room was better at the hotel, but food is quite good here at the Village." Two athletes from Barbados, who arrived earlier today, seemed a bit unhappy after they saw their room. They termed their flat "a little dusty" and not properly cleaned. "It''s okay but the flats are a little dusty," Daniel Thorpe, a badminton player from Barbados, said reluctantly when asked about the accommodation and other facilities at the Village. Asked to explain the problems, another member of the Barbados team volunteered. "The kitchen is not fully ready yet. Even the bathrooms don''t have all the proper fittings in place," said athlete Nicholas Reifer. The two players, however, said they haven''t yet registered their complaints, but would probably do so if things do not get sorted out. "We would complain if things do not get better," said Reifer. A badminton player from Wales, Caroline Harvey, however, instead of looking for loopholes, opted to focus on the positives at the Village. "We did face a little trouble when it blacked out for an hour yesterday night but I guess that was alright," said Harvey. "Overall, I''m having a nice time here. The food is excellent, especially the Indian curry that was exactly to my taste. Even the accommodation is good," added the 22-year-old. Sanja Elena Coetzee, a member of the South African team, claimed that she was apprehensive about coming to India after all the negative reports, but was pleasantly surprised by what she saw on entering the Village. "I''m not facing any problems. The flats are in place and so is everything else. Best thing is there is an internet cafe at the International Zone. And I''m happy to be in constant touch with my family and friends," said Coetzee.

English men''s CWG squash squad on a high

Wed, Sep 29 10 09:27 PM

New Delhi, Sep 29 (PTI) The English squash team, which is one of the strongest contingents at the Commonwealth Games here, will be looking forward to snaring maximum medals at the October 3-14 event. Daryl Paul Selby, a member of the English team said, the ranking and quality of players would definitely help England''s squad return with a lot of medals, most of them gold, from the squash events at the Siri Fort Sports complex. "We have been working very hard for singles as well as doubles. In singles we occupy all the top four seeded positions and in doubles we occupy first and third seeds," Selby said. "But make no mistake, we''ll have to work hard as squash is a very tough sport. Australia and Malaysia are tough competition, while India and Pakistan also have good individual players," Selby added. The Englishman also gave a thumbs-up to the athletes'' Village, which was a few days back dubbed "filthy and unlivable" by foreign delegates. "The Games Village is indeed very impressive, especially the International Zone. Since we have arrived, we have been treated to some of the best facilities ever in terms of dining and accommodation. "The food here is fantastic and of very high quality, that''s what an athlete needs," Selby said. Asked about the negative media coverage of the Delhi Games in England, Selby said that the media there had shown both the good and the bad. "As professional athletes, we do not carry an impression anywhere. Our team manager was here before us and he told us that most of the things were done while some minor things remained. He said it was a brilliant place and a world-class facility." The player said that the team always practices together and goes through different routines. "We also practice in different conditions to acclimatise us to all sorts of situations. There are two practice sessions, of a couple of hours each. These include court as well conditioning and stretching exercises," Selby said. PTI SHN

McCullum raring to open again with Ryder in Tests

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 09:17 PM

Wellington, Sept.29 (ANI): Black Caps opening batsman Brendon McCullum says he can't wait to rekindle his old relationship with fellow opener Jesse Ryder in Bangladesh.

McCullum and Ryder last opened together in September last year where they shared a 125 run partnership against Sri Lanka in Johannesburg, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Meanwhile there's a growing expectation for new Black Cap fast bowler Hamish Bennett to step up during the tour of Bangladesh.

Bennett's record in domestic cricket is not flash, with 24 wickets at an average of 37 runs.

However McCullum's expecting Bennett's pace to trouble the home side.

He says Bennett's big, strong, bowls as fast as he can and will do really well if he gets an opportunity.

ICC to closely monitor Butt's approach toward ECB over spot-fixing scandal

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 09:07 PM

Islamabad, Sept 29 (ANI): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Ijaz Butt, who is in England to reportedly calm the rising tensions between the Pakistan and England boards over the spot-fixing scandal which broke late last month, will reportedly be under the ICC's crosshairs over the outcome of his deliberations.

According to The News, the International Cricket Council would be observing his tour closely, as there are suggestions that it might consider suspending Butt from the his role as its director, and that the matter might feature at the next ICC meeting in Dubai from October 12-13 this year.

Butt is at a risk of being suspended from his post for his extraordinary outburst against the ECB and the ICC.

Earlier, he had expressed his disappointment at ICC's provisional suspension of three Pakistan players and said that a separate police investigation should have taken place before taking such action.

However, the extreme step of suspension could be averted if the boards of England and Pakistan achieve some sort of rapprochement, the paper said.

Earlier, right after the outburst, the ECB sent a letter to Butt asking for a full apology, failing to which it would lead to action against him. However, Butt has not been willing to apologise, and refused to do so on his arrival in London as well. ANI)

Indian cricketers display new kit ahead of Oz series

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 08:53 PM

Chandigarh/Mohali, Sep. 29 (ANI): Members of the Indian cricket team displayed their new one-day kit here on Wednesday ahead of the ODI series to be played against Australia.

The new kit has been designed keeping in mind the playing conditions such as excessive perspiration that a player may have to endure on the field hampering his performance.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar speaking about the new jerseys opined that having tri-colour on outfit is something special and the Indian cricket team is proud to wear these colours.

"Blue is one of my favourite colours. I like blue, most of the shades of blue and also orange, so I am quite happy with the outfit," said Tendulkar.

Indian opener Gautam Gambhir, who was also present on the occasion, said the team is keenly waiting to play an exciting series against the Kangaroos.

"Absolutely, I think whenever you play against Australia, it's always a great competition and a great challenge and you want to test yourself whenever you are playing international cricket against the best in the world," said Gambhir.

"So, hopefully, this time also I can contribute the same like we have had done in the last series as well," he added.

Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha were the other cricketers present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Australian coach Tim Nielsen, while addressing the media in Mohali, said despite his squad having a couple of inexperienced players, they are all eager to prove their worth against India, presently at the top in the international Test rankings.

"There are chances, we do have some inexperienced players in our squad. Now, we have Michael Hussey and Doug Bollinger back into the team. The bowlers are experienced a little bit," said Nielsen.

He also mentioned that the Indian batting's top order spearheaded by swashbuckling opener Sehwag is a definite threat to the Aussies.

India and Australia will play their first Test match at Mohali commencing on Friday, while the second Test will be played in Bangalore on October 9.

The Aussies will take on India in One Day Internationals (ODI) beginning on October 17. (ANI)

BCCI chief confident of taking Indian cricket higher

Wed, Sep 29 10 07:51 PM

Mumbai, Sep 29 (PTI) The BCCI has weathered the storm triggered by the financial scandal that rocked the Indian Premier League earlier this year, Board President Shashank Manohar said today. "The Board has weathered several storms during the year and I am happy to say that the entire Board stood as one unit and supported the decisions taken by the Office Bearers," said Manohar in his annual message to the Board members. "I am sure that we will come out stronger and pursue our goal to take Indian cricket to greater heights," he has written in the Board''s annual report for 2009-10. Terming the year under review a mixed bag of results on the cricket field, Manohar hailed batting icon Sachin Tendulkar for having completed two decades in international cricket and becoming the first men''s player to score a double hundred in ODI history. "The year under review has been a mixed bag in terms of the achievements of our teams in the International Tournaments. The Indian team performed consistently well in Tests to attain the top position in ICC Test rankings. "However a not-so-consistent performance in One Day Internationals saw our position fluctuate between second and third place in ODI rankings," he said. "Our performance in the ICC T20 World Cup has not been up to the mark yet again. However, the Womem''s team reached the Semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup," he noted.

Pak hockey coach says team "not in position to clinch hockey gold in Delhi Games"

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 01:37 PM

Lahore, Sep 29 (ANI): Pakistan hockey coach Michel van den Heuvel has said that he cannot predict a gold medal for his team, as he expects tough competition in the offing in the upcoming Commonwealth Games starting in New Delhi from October 3.

"We are not in a position to win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games since the competition is tough. However, we'll try our best to deliver in the forthcoming Asian Games (to be held in China in November)," the Dawn quoted Michel, as saying to reporters at the National Hockey Stadium, where the 16-member Pakistan team was finalised on Tuesday after the last session of the training camp ended.

"We are to face Scotland in the first match, in which we will try to take a fine start by earning a good win against them," he said, adding, "With Australia, world's number one team, along with hosts India and Malaysia also in our pool, makes it a tough contest."

Michel, who joined the Pakistani hockey team some four months ago following Pakistan's disastrous performance in the last World Cup in New Delhi earlier this year, stated, "Pakistan do not deserve that poor 12th spot (which they achieved in the last World Cup), as they should be among the best outfits of the world."

"Our entire planning is also focused on improving Pakistan's world ranking," he added.

Michel also suggested that Pakistan should play more international tournaments, considering this to be the best way to make rapid improvement at the global level.

Currently, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) desperately wants its team to secure victory in a big tournament, like the Delhi Commonwealth Games, which is the lone event before the national team leaves for the Asian Games to be held in China in November. (ANI)

PCB boss Butt reportedly planning to bring back 'close friend' Yawar in board

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 01:23 PM

Lahore, Sep 29 (ANI): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt is reportedly planning to offer former manager Yawar Saeed an important position in the PCB.

According to media reports, the PCB chairman wants to retain Yawar with him in the board, and has started planning in this regard, the Daily Times reported.

If the Pakistani players are able to come out clean from the spot-fixing allegations, then there are chances that Yawar may be assigned an important position in the PCB.

He may be appointed the Chief Operating Officer in place of Wasim Bari, or a member of the governing board, or Special Assistant to the Chairman, the paper said.

The managerial tenure of 75-year-old Yawar has been full of controversies, but he remained the manager of the national cricket team, being a close friend of Butt.

Earlier this week, Yawar had stepped down from his post of team manager in the wake of match-fixing allegations that have rocked the cricketing world.

"I will not take charge as manager of the national team again," Yawar said.

However, he added, "If Ijaz wants me to continue I can't say no to him. He is an old friend and if he says I must continue in interest of Pakistan cricket, I will listen. But I will definitely try to convince him the time is right for me to step down." (ANI)

Khaaliqa, all of 12 years, aims for squash gold at CWG

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 01:17 PM

New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) She studies in class 8, badly misses her mom, has fallen in love with chicken tikka and naan, and she wants a medal -- not any, but one at the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games. Meet Khaaliqa Nimji, all of 12 years, from Kenya, one of the youngest competitors at the Games.

It is a dream come true for Khaaliqa as she marks her arrival on the international stage in India, a country about which she knows little but has taken a liking for its food to such an extent that she has not tried the African and the continetal dishes since her arrvial at the Games Village Sunday.

She is part of a four-member Kenyan squash unit comprising two men and two women.

'I am madly in love with the chicken tikka and the naan. That is all I have been eating since I have come,' she gushes.

'It feels great to represent Kenya. I know I am fairly young but walking around with the elder lot does not bother me. I am just thrilled to be here,' Khaaliqa told IANS.

Khaaliqa is the number two squash player in Kenya and has defeated the higher ranked compatriot Safina Madhani on more occasions than one.

The young star inherited the sport from her father Sadri Nimji, who played for the country in international events in the 1990's.

'I started playing when I was five and maybe my dad was also playing at that time,' she guessed.

'I don't know whether squash is in my blood. All I know is that I love the sport,' she said.

'Khaaliqa started playing tennis at a training center in Nairobi,' her father Nimji revealed.

'But now I have to force her to play that sport. She prefers playing squash all the time. It is so much fun for her.' he said.

The security for the Games scared her at first as the Village has been turned virtually into a fortress.

She almost panicked seeing police officials all around her as she entered the Village.

'It was crazy when I first landed. I was scared of the cops being everywhere but now I feel much better as I have started liking the Village. Everyone is so friendly here,' she said.

The little wonder that she is, Khaaliqa is sad at not being able to meet her father regularly as only players and officials are allowed to live in the village.

'I have met him only once since I came here. I can't meet him at will, so I talk to him on the phone all the time. I badly miss my mom, brother and cousins and can't wait to get back home,' she said.

World champion Rickard says majority of Oz swimming team will go to Delhi

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 01:07 PM

Sydney, Sep 29 (ANI): Amid the Australian swimmers concerns over security and health at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, World champion Brenton Rickard has said the majority of the swimming team will board its flight to Delhi later today.

The 100m-breaststroke world champion said he was keen but cautious as he looked to claim his first Commonwealth Games gold medal.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs has released a fresh alert saying there is a "high risk of terrorist attack" at the Games, which are scheduled to start from October 3.

The department issued this alert after the media reported that leaked top secret police documents reveal two extremist groups are planning to attack the Commonwealth Games.

Australian athletes, who have so far arrived in Delhi, have generally been impressed with facilities and arrangements at the Games village, but questions remain about the participation of the swimming team.

Rickard was optimistic most of his teammates would travel on to Delhi, despite admitting there could still be some last-minute withdrawals, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

"I'm pretty confident you'll see definitely the majority of the team," Rickard said from Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

"I haven't heard of too many swimmers that are considering not going, there's always the chance of one or two or maybe more pulling out, but everyone I've spoken to is very keen to go and race and experience India.

"So I would not be too concerned about not seeing too much of the team there," Rickard said. (ANI)

Butt refuses to apologise to England cricketers

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 12:57 PM

Pakistan cricket chief Ijaz Butt flew into England still steadfastly refusing to apologise for his role in a row over 'spot-fixing' that has been the talk of world cricket world.

Pakistan's recent tour of England, where they also played Australia in a neutral series, was marred by spot-fixing allegations.

The tour ended in acrimony when Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Butt alleged England players were paid "enormous amounts of money" to lose the third one-day international at The Oval, sparking a furious row between the two countries' cricket officials.

England players and the England and Wales Cricket Board have threatened legal action unless they receive an unreserved apology from Butt who, at the time, said he was simply repeating something he'd heard from bookmakers.

Butt, due to meet with his London lawyers today, gave little away when asked by reporters after getting off his plane Tuesday if he'd apologise.

"I will talk to you people once I am through with my visit here."

As to whether he was ready for legal action if he didn't apologise, Butt said: "It depends, we'll see what happens.

"There is a lot of confusion, once I am through (with this visit) most of this confusion will be overcome."

Butt is due to meet Elizabeth Robertson, the British lawyer representing Pakistani players and the PCB over the spot-fixing allegations.

He is also expected to meet Scotland Yard officers who have already interviewed Test captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Aamer and Wahab Riaz The International Cricket Council (ICC) has provisionally suspended Butt, Aamer and Asif following a newspaper report the trio were involved in a plot to bowl no-balls deliberately during a Test against England at Lord's.

The ICC has launched a separate inquiry into the September 17 one-dayer at The Oval after British tabloid The Sun said the scoring pattern of Pakistan's innings in the match was pre-arranged with bookmakers.

Butt also met ICC officials last week in an unsuccessful attempt to get the provisional suspension on the three players lifted.

His comments could lead to his own suspension as an ICC director, a post he holds by virtue of his PCB role, because he appears to have breached the code of ethics that governs all those who are directors of cricket's global governing body.

However, it is understood the ICC are waiting to see if England and Pakistan can resolve the matter before taking any action themselves.

Injured Semenya pulls out of Commonwealth Games

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 12:53 PM

Joining the long list of star pullouts from the Delhi Commonwealth Games, South Africa's 800m world champion Caster Semenya on Wednesday withdrew from the event citing a back injury.

Hours after her mentor Michael Seme stated that she would be fit in time for the October 3 to 14 event, Athletics South Africa withdrew Semenya's name saying that the star runner would be risking a major injury if she travelled to Delhi.

"Caster has been experiencing back pain for some period of time and continued to have pain after competing in a cross-country event at the weekend," South Africa's Commonwealth Games chief Tubby Reddy said.

"Our doctor has since examined her and ... (the) scan confirmed that she most certainly has a back problem. We are satisfied that this is a bona fide injury and as such, SASOC and Athletics South Africa agree that we are not in a position to compromise her health by risking her competing at New Delhi," he added.

Semenya joins other star athletes such as Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Phillips Idowu, David Rudisha and John Steffensen in pulling out of the event.

Team South Africa's Chief Medical Officer Shuaib Manjra said the runner underwent medical testing yesterday and scans have confirmed a back injury.

"It would serve no purpose to have an athlete in Delhi who was struggling with any sort of injury that would compromise performance and it is our medical view that physically and emotionally she would not be capable of doing justice to her talent at an event of this magnitude," said Manjra.

Back injury forces world champ Semenya to pull out of Delhi Commonwealth Games

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 12:47 PM

London, Sep 29 (ANI): World 800 metres champion Caster Semenya has pulled out of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games on medical grounds just hours after her coach announced that she was fit to compete.

Semenya, who returned to field in July after an 11-month gender investigation, has been struggling with a back injury sustained in training.

Her coach, Michael Seme, had earlier dismissed the problem as a minor niggle. "She had a slight pain in the back, but the issue has been blown slightly out of proportion," he had said.

"She's going to be 100 per cent fit. We are training and will be there," The Telegraph quoted Seme, as having said earlier.

The South African Olympic Committee doctor overruled Seme's decision hours later.

The Olympic Committee chief executive, Tubby Ready, said the scan "confirmed that she most certainly has a back problem".

Semenya would have been the overwhelming favourite to win the Commonwealth Games 800m crown to the world title she won in Berlin last summer. (ANI)

Delhi Commonwealth Games doomed from the start, says Olympic legend Johnson

Published>Wed, Sep 29 10 12:37 PM

London, Sep 29 (ANI): Former Olympic 200 and 400 metres champion Michael Johnson has said that the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games were "doomed from the start".

Over 850 athletes and officials arrived on Tuesday at the Games village, which has been marred in controversy over its unpreparedness, to showcase their talents at the Games, starting from October 3-14.ohnson said that was all down to the decision to stage the Games in October, outside the mainstream season for athletics, traditionally the event's central attraction.

"This edition of the Commonwealth Games was doomed from the start," Johnson wrote in The Times newspaper.

"First, the timing was all wrong...Keep in mind the traditional season for athletics -- which would be one of, if not the, premier sports of the Commonwealth Games -- takes place from April to the end of August," he wrote.

"That's if the athlete has not competed in the indoor season taking place in January and February. To finish the season in August and then go back into training or try to maintain peak competitive form is extremely difficult in preparation for an event that takes place more than one month after your last race.

"This is also taking place at a time when most track and field athletes are in their annual four to six-week break from training and this off-season could be one of the most important of all with the World Championships taking place next August," Johnson wrote.

He questioned the worth of an event restricted to former British Empire nations, saying the Commonwealth Games "have struggled in past years to get the best athletes to take them seriously" and that in athletics "a Commonwealth title barely registers any respect on a global scale," The Sydney Morning Herald reports. Tumultuous buildup to CWG will put pressure on athletes: Jwala

Wed, Sep 29 10 12:33 PM

Amit Kumar Das New Delhi, Sep 29 (PTI) India''s top doubles player Jwala Gutta is saddened by the negative publicity surrounding the Commonwealth Games and feels this will put additional pressure on the athletes to deliver during the October 3-14 Delhi event here. A seven-time national doubles champion, Jwala said there are things which should have been better taken care of but the media should also have been a bit "more responsible" while reporting about the event, the build-up to which has been marred by allegations of corruption and shoddy construction work. "I feel very sad by the way things have happened in the build up to the Games. There has been so much negative publicity which may have been avoided. Well, the stadiums could have been finished earlier but then the Indian government have done so much and such reports would only put pressure on the athletes," Jwala told PTI. "I have not seen the village but my friends who are already there have told me that it is beautiful and really top class. There are issues with all big events but the foreign athletes form an opinion reading the reports which come out and I feel the media could have been a little more responsible," she said. Jwala, who will partner V Diju and Ashwini Ponnappa in the mixed and women''s doubles respectively in the Commonwealth Games, said the Indian team is in the best form and should win at least four golds in the event. "This is my third commonwealth Games and I can tell you we are in the best shape and probably this is the best team we have in years. The Indian government has supported us very much and this is the best chance we can have to win medals and I feel India should win at least four golds," she said. MORE PTI ATK PM
