Bangalore, Oct 11 (PTI) After achieving the herculean feat of being the first cricketer to complete 14,000 runs in Test cricket yesterday, Sachin Tendulkar is slowly but surely approaching another glorious milestone as he completed his 49th Test century, against Australia, here today. India on verge of CWG medals record as 16 gold medals at stake on Day 8

Published>Mon, Oct 11 10 11:07 AM

New Delhi, Oct 11 (ANI): With 16 gold medals at stake on the eighth day of the XIXth Commonwealth Games, India would be keen to continue the impressive run as they are on the verge of equalling their best ever Commonwealth Games gold medals record today.

India has so far won 29 gold and another gold would put them level with their all time list of 30 gold, which they achieved in 2002 Manchester Games.

Out of six gold medals in Athletics on Monday, all eyes would be on discus thrower Krishna Pooniya and Renjit Maheshwari, who will compete in men's triple jump.

Despite showing a dismal performance in the 2010 Games so far, the Indian swimmers and divers would look to better their performance today with Hari Prasad Thimmarayappa and Manesh Kumar Mohan competing in men's 3m-springboard event, and Hrutika Parvatayya Shriram and Deepti Panwar in women's 10m-platform event at the SP Mukherjee Swimming Stadium today.

Indian boxers Suranjoy Singh and Amandeep Singh will be fighting in their respective semi-finals.

Indian shooters have been impressive in the 2010 Games and will eye upon gold today as well. Tejaswini Sawant and Meena Kumari will participate in the Women's 50m Prone Rifle Pairs event, while Allan Daniel Peoples and Mairaj Ahmad Khan will aim for gold in the Men's Skeet Pairs event.

Weightlifter Sarabjit fight for gold in 105+kg Men Finals.

Little Keshava's tabla journey began at dining table

Published>Mon, Oct 11 10 10:52 AM

Chennai, Oct 11 (IANS) The seven-year-old's fingers created magic on the tabla at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony but little Keshava's musical journey began at the dining table when he was just two. And the boy wonder sings and plays the guitar too - when he's not reading his favourite 'Snow White' story!

Prafulla Dahanukar, a painter, watched in amazement as her two-year-old grandson Keshava copied the rhythmic beat cycles she played on their dining table. She immediately decided to buy him his first tabla.

He then took to music, growing up in a musical and artistic environment in Auroville, Puducherry, said his mother Gopika, who is a singer and photographer.

The child later learnt more of the intricacies by simply watching the hand movements of tabla player Ganesh Basavaraju who plays the percussion instrument with Gopika and her companion Nadaka at their public performances.

And after coming home, Keshava would imitate Basavaraju's hand movements on his tabla. Basavaraju later started guiding the child whenever he came home, Gopika told IANS.

Recalling the moments before Keshava began playing at the CWG opening ceremony, Gopika said: 'I gave him a completely different approach to the opening ceremony. I told him it's a big light show and there will be many people participating and he is one of them. I did not allow any press before the opening as I wanted to guard the spontaneity for him.'

'With that approach, he was fearless right till he walked up on stage. All he knew was that his part was to go play and come back down to mama.'

The CWG opening was his first solo and sixth public performance.

Even as comparisons were drawn between Keshava and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, especially as both have curly locks, Gopika revealed that she compared his hair to none other than Hindu god Krishna.

'I feel a deep connection to Krishna - I was singing many songs to Krishna before he was born. Keshava was my favourite name of Krishna and I dreamt that my son should be born with curly hair and it happened,' Gopika told IANS. Keshava is a synonym for Krishna.

A Class 2 student of Deepanam School in Auroville, Keshava sings well and tries his hand at the guitar too.

'He will remember a song in the pitch he has heard it. When he was three, he would sing songs tapping his feet and clapping in rhythm at the same time...pacing up and down,' Gopika said.

The proud mother says Keshava is shy but full of energy.

The tabla prodigy's daily routine consists of going to school, reading his favourite fairytale books, cycling and checking his amla and lemon trees.

'He loves to arrange the dining table for all of us while I cook and after dinner, he plays his tabla for a while if he feels like...which can even go up to an hour or two sometimes,' Gopika said.

Keshava's current favourite storybook is 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' and he absolutely loves the part where the queen transforms herself into an old hag.

The little boy loves the idea of magic and a make-believe world where he can transform himself into anything he wants and entertains the family.

'He takes a glass of water and entertains us by pretending it is a magic potion and acts as though he is transforming himself into different animals and characters,' Gopika said.

While the country will remember Keshava taking centre-stage as nearly 1,000 drummers performed at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, the boy is ignorant about his fame.

'When a relative called him and said, 'Keshu you have become a big man, he replied no, no, I am still a small boy',' his mother recalled.

Were they nervous just before her son went on to the big stage?

'I had no stress or fear in me and we laughed narrating his story under the stage minutes before he performed,' Gopika said.

And what was her initial reaction when Keshava was approached to play at the mega event?

'After some contemplation I followed my inner guidance and thought that since it's not something that I had pursued and had come to him on its own, then it must be part of his destiny.'

NZ television host quits in row over mocking name Dikshit

Mon, Oct 11 10 10:17 AM

A New Zealand television host has quit after sparking a diplomatic row when he ridiculed the name of Sheila Dikshit, the chief minister of New Delhi.

Television station TVNZ came under heavy criticism after its "Breakfast" show host Paul Henry mispronounced Dikshit, despite being told by the lead anchor that it is pronounced "Dixit".

India summoned New Zealand's high commissioner on Thursday to formally protest against what it said were "racial remarks" involving Dikshit who was asked last month to take charge of the floundering Commonwealth Games preparations.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said on Monday that Henry had resigned after several hundred complaints to the broadcaster regarding his Dikshit comments and questioning whether the nation's Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand, who is of Indian descent, was "even a New Zealander."

"He has made that decision and I guess over the last week he's had some time to reflect on the comments," Key told breakfast television on Monday.

Key said there had been no pressure from himself or the government on TVNZ regarding Henry's future and it was "good that he has personally made that decision."

The prime minister said Henry's resignation would help repair any damage caused to New Zealand's relationship with India but it stressed these were comments from one person.

TVNZ's Chief Executive Rick Ellis said he accepted Henry's resignation on Sunday after seven years as a breakfast TV host and apologised to anyone who had been offended by the presenter's "inappropriate on-air comments."

"I will be apologising in person to the Governor General. I also apologise to the Indian community, both here and in India," he said in a statement.

Henry, 50, who was suspended from the TV station on Oct. 5, said he had apologised twice and accepted he had inadvertently crossed the line of what was acceptable from time to time.

"I do not want to continue to be used as a lightning rod for racial disharmony in this country. Likewise, I certainly do not want my elderly mother staked out at her nursing home by tabloid media, as has happened this weekend," he said in a statement.

There are more than 100,000 New Zealanders of Indian ethnic origin, almost 3 percent of the population.

The row was the latest in a series of problems for authorities in Delhi who have struggled with a chaotic runup to the Games where corruption, shoddy construction, health and security issues brought into question India's ability to host the event.

Bento's Portugal ready to continue revival

Published>Mon, Oct 11 10 09:58 AM

Portugal, brimming with confidence after a morale-boosting 3-1 win over Denmark on Friday, look to carry the momentum gained from Paulo Bento's triumphant first game as coach into Tuesday's visit to Iceland.

Appointed last month to replace Carlos Queiroz, who was sacked for insulting anti-doping agents, Bento was under immediate pressure after Portugal had taken just one point from two Euro 2012 qualifiers having lost 1-0 in Norway and drawn 4-4 to Cyprus in Group H.

But despite having had just a few days with the players, Bento has lifted the dark clouds that had hung over the team during the Queiroz controversy.

"We've entered a new cycle, and he (Bento) given an us an injection of confidence and we want to repay everything he has brought us," goalkeeper Eduardo said.

The coach's knowledge of the players and recent experience as a Portugal international are likely to have helped him bond with the team so quickly.

Bento played with forward Cristiano Ronaldo at Sporting, where he later guided wingers Nani and Varela and midfielders Joao Moutinho and Carlos Martins for several seasons.

"It has been good to work with him (Bento), the players are happy and you can see that on the pitch," Ronaldo said.

Winger Nani inspired the team against the Danes, scoring two and creating another for Ronaldo, but Bento noted that Portugal's attacking intent was such that they should have ended with a bigger margin of victory.

Bento's first team selection earned praise from commentators for allowing Portugal to play in a passing style that was often stifled under Queiroz.

By bringing back Pepe from a midfield role to play in defence with his Real Madrid partner Ricardo Carvalho, Bento gave Portugal a solid and synchronised pairing at the back.

It also allowed him to deploy Raul Meireles in front of central defence. The Liverpool player's precise passing gave Portugal the ability to break forward smoothly and he combined well with the impressive Moutinho to control the midfield.

Up front, Nani seems intent on making up for missing the World Cup through injury and Ronaldo thoroughly deserved his goal after a strong second half.

Portugal climbed to second in Group H, but know they cannot afford any more slip-ups with Norway five points ahead of them.

Iceland lost their first two qualifiers but forced Norway to come from behind to notch a 2-1 win and Denmark only bagged the three points with a last-gasp goal.

"In theory, Iceland are the weaker opponent. They lost against Denmark and Norway but played good games. We have to be very careful," Moutinho said.

Portugal (probable line-up): Eduardo; Joao Pereira, Ricardo Carvalho, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao; Carlos Martins, Raul Meireles, Joao Moutinho; Cristiano Ronaldo, Hugo Almeida, Nani.

Monkeys breach lockdown, hockey ignites passion

Published>Mon, Oct 11 10 08:37 AM

Wild monkeys and stray dogs got front row seats but a massive security operation kept most other spectators away as Australia snatched another two Commonwealth Games cycling gold medals on the streets of Delhi on Sunday.

Delhiites were out in force later in the day, though, when a packed house roared the hosts on to a 7-4 hockey victory against Pakistan, dispelling any doubts about the city's passion for sport after days of empty venues at the $6 billion event.

India has mobilised more than 100,000 personnel to ensure the safety of the Games for 71 mostly former British colonies, which they intended to use as a display of soft power to complement their growing economic might.

The embarrassing setbacks that scarred the run-up to the Games and the gremlims that have dogged the event since the opening ceremony have only served to reinforce a determination that there should be no security breaches.

"We continue to monitor security and one of the more important aspects of security is that there is no let up," Games Federation President Michael Fennell said.

"We have had a number of complaints about overzealousness of security personnel and other issues relating to security. We have maintained our discussions to ensure the very rigid security measures continue right through the rest of the Games.

"We cannot ease up until we complete the journey."

Even though the sparse crowds at the Games has also been a contentious issue at the Games, central Delhi was shut down on Sunday as cyclists swept along the picturesque avenues and usually teeming circuses of Lutyens' city.

Keeping Delhi's wildlife away from the 13.7km circuit proved more difficult, however, despite the troop of grey langur monkeys hired by the city to deter smaller, more common simians.

"Apart from the wild monkeys and dogs, there was nothing too challenging," said Rochelle Gilmour after winning the women's 112-km race in a sprint finish. "We were told there would be no wild animals but there were."

Allan Davis later triumphed in an attritional 168-km men's race to help boost Australia's gold tally to 61 at the end of day eight, 32 ahead of hosts India (29) who moved ahead of England (26) in the race for second in the medal table.

Top British rider Mark Cavendish, racing for the Isle of Man, faded late on and finished seventh but had no complaints about his amateur team mates.

"We didn't have a team as strong as the Australians," said the Manx. "In our team we had an electrician and a man from the water board."

Security, a key concern after the 2008 militant attack on Mumbai which killed more than 160 people, was also beefed up around the Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium in the run-up to India's must-win clash against Pakistan.

If cricket is a religion in India then hockey is a major cult and the cheers of the 19,000 crowd could be heard in the Delhi night long after the final whistle had secured their team a place a semi-final against England.

Australian shooter Michelangelo Giustinian had a miserable day, however, after emptying five rounds into a rival's target during the 25m centrefire pistol and blowing his chance of a medal.

"I don't recall this ever happening," the 57-year-old twice Games champion said. "It's crazy. I'll get my head around it eventually."

In the athletics, Kenya's Kiplagats swept the podium with some ease in the 800m at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Boaz Kiplagat Lalang leading the way in 1:46.60 ahead of Richard Kiplagat and Abraham Kiplagat.

"It was not so difficult, we were likely to win the medals," said Lalang, whose compatriot David Rudisha is the world record holder in the event but skipped the Games along with several other leading athletes.

The women's 200m final was postponed until Monday pending an appeal by Cypriot favourite Elena Artymata over her disqualification for moving out of her lane in the semi-finals.

Athletics will take centre stage on the ninth day of the Games with Australia's Olympic champion Steve Hooker expected to win the pole vault and India hoping for a first track gold in 62 years through 800m runner Tintu Luka.

The 19th Commonwealth Games close on Oct. 14.

Best-ever Games tally makes for India's euphoric Sunday

Published>Mon, Oct 11 10 12:21 AM

New Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS) India enter the second week of the 2010 Commonwealth Games Monday after an euphoric 7-4 hockey victory over Pakistan Sunday and an encouraging 73 medals, the best-ever Games tally, surpassing the 69 at Manchester eight years ago.

On the 7th day of the competitions Sunday, 15 medals -- five gold, five silver and five bronze - were won by Indians in archery, shooting, wrestling, athletics and tennis. This was India's biggest haul on a single day at these Games.

Archery contributed two gold and one each came from the shooting range, wrestling arena and tennis stadium, taking the tally to 29, just one short of the record 30 gold bagged at Manchester.

Deepika Kumari, the 16-year-old archery sensation, set off Sunday's gold haul by winning in the individual recurve. Rahul Banerjee picked the second archery gold of the day, from the men's individual recurve event.

Shooter Harpreet Singh, Bejing Olympic bronze medallist in wrestling Sushil Kumar and tennis star Somdev Devvarman brought in a gold each.

The break-up at the end Sunday's events was 29 gold and 22 silver and bronze each. In the last Games at Melbourne, India returned with 22 gold, 17 silver and 10 bronze, totalling 49.

Australia leads the table with 60 gold, 36 silver and 35 bronze. England is third with 25-45-30.

With four more days to go for the curtains to come down on the Games, the question is whether India would cross the three-figure medals tally and also displace Canada at number three position in the overall Games table. Canada had come third both at 2002 Manchester and 2006 Melbourne Games. Australia was the table topper with England behind them.

India scored an emphatic 7-4 victory over bitter rivals Pakistan and were greeted with thunderous applause from an overflowing Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. Among the spectators were Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi.

Deepika Kumari, daughter of an auto-rickshaw driver in Ranchi, became India's first individual gold winner from archery in the Games. She beat Athens Olympics bronze medallist Alison Jane Williamson of England 6-0.

While Rahul Banerjee took the gold in individual recurve event, Jayanta Talukdar and veteran Dola Banerjee and got a bronze each.

With four medals coming their way Sunday, India ended their campaign in archery with a rich haul of eight medals -- three gold, one silver and four bronze.

There was no let up in the shooters good showing with Harpreet Singh taking the gold in the men's 25 metres centre fire pistol event while the silver went to Vijay Kumar after a dramatic four-way shoot-off and former world champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu trapped the bronze.

The fourth gold of the day came from Olympics bronze medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar in the freestyle 66 kg category.

Rising tennis star Somdev Devvarman rounded off the day bagging the gold in the men's single's.

Joginder Kumar and Anuj Kumar won the silver in the freestyle 120kg ande 84kg category respectively. Anil Kumar won the bronze in the 55 kg category.

It was an all Indian affair in the women's tennis doubles for the bronze that saw Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthi beating Nirupama Sanjeev and Poojashree Venkatesha.

India had their best-ever day in the Commonwealth Games track and field competition Sunday, picking up two silver medals from men's discus and women's long jump. Vikas Gowda brought the country its first silver medal of the day and also in the ongoing edition of the Games giving the 40,000 odd Sunday crowd at the majestic Jawaharlal Nehru stadium much to cheer for.

A strained calf muscle prevented women's long jumper M.A. Prajusha from winning a rare gold in the track and field competition and she had to be content with a silver with a leap of 6.26m in her final attempt.

'Surprised, saddened' Kings XI seeks legal options on IPL ouster

Published>Sun, Oct 10 10 11:57 PM

Chandigarh, Oct 10 (IANS) 'Surprised and saddened' Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) Sunday said that it was seeking legal options to its ouster from the multi-million rupee cricketing league by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

A statement from the franchise, issued by its public relations consultancy said: 'KXIP is surprised and saddened by the recent action of the BCCI. KXIP has been a loyal franchisee since the inception of the IPL, at a time when there was no guarantee or visibility of the leagues' success.'

The KXIP franchise is jointly owned by industrialist Ness Wadia, his ex-girlfriend and Bollywood actress Priety Zinta and two other businessmen.

The team has the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Brett Lee, Kumar Sangakkara and Irfan Pathan in its ranks.

'In the recent past, KXIP has fully cooperated with all government and regulatory authorities as well as the BCCI in assisting them with their questions. KXIP reiterates that the company has followed all terms and conditions and has not violated any agreement.

'KXIP strongly believes that this decision is unfair and not in the collaborative spirit which the IPL has operated in. Kings XI hopes that the BCCI will engage in a productive dialogue to resolve all misunderstandings.'

The statement said that it was getting the issue legally examined before contemplating the next course of action.

'KXIP has today (Sunday) received the formal communication from the BCCI which is now being studied by our legal team. We look forward to presenting the facts and answering any misunderstandings that the BCCI may have.'

The BCCI Sunday announced the scrapping of the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab teams from the IPL for violating franchisee conditions, especially on ownership.

The BCCI decision means that both teams will not be able to play in IPL Season-4 next year.

Rajasthan Royals, which has London-based billionaire Raj Kundra and his wife and Bollywood celebrity Shipla Shetty as co-owners, had won the IPL season-1.

Hope gold medals are of value in India: Somdev

Sun, Oct 10 10 11:31 PM

New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) Somdev Devvarman did not let the nation down by giving India its first and only gold medal in the tennis event of the Commonwealth Games and chose the moment to send out the message to authorities that athletes get support and respect in the country. The whole Davis Cup team had to revolt to get their dues cleared from the government before the start of the Games as they shot a letter to AITA threatening to pull out of the event. Eventually they got it cleared though the Sports Ministry and All India Tennis Association got engaged in a blame game for the delay. "I hope that gold medals are of some value in this country and they (government and tennis federation) start appreciating what athletes go through in one-on-one sport when so many people are watching. I hope that the country now start appreciating," Somdev said after his 6-4 6-2 win over fifth seed Australian Greg Jones. Somdev fell short of words when asked about his first thoughts after the gold-medal winning feat. "I am ecstatic. Can''t say how I am feeling. It''s been a long time that I won so many matches in row. It shows that I am getting better and better. Training is paying off. I am just super, super, super happy," he said. "It was for the first time that I was playing for India in such a big tournament. It means a world. One of the best moments." Asked if he was under pressure going into the match considering the fact that India had not won a single gold in tennis. "To be honest, I did not think that much about that. My coaches told me that you have the opportunity. But honestly I was a bit anxious whole day and there were signs of nerves initially. And I am happy that I could do my bit for the country," he said. Asked if he has enough funds, he said, "To be honest, I don''t want to make excuses. That I don''t have funds and that''s why I am not been able to do things. I did not think that way." The crowd support has been immense for the Indian players and Somdev acknowledged that. "Unbelievable. They were there from the first to last point to the medal ceremony. Crowd helped a lot." Tennis made its debut in the current edition of the Games but will not be part of the next essay in Glasgow. Somdev said it was a shame. "It''s unfortunate and a shame that Commonwealth Games Federation will not have tennis. Look we had five gold medals on offer and it brought so many people to the stadium. I don''t know the reasons but it''s a shame. It''s a mistake on their part," he said. Talking about his opponent today, he said, "He had good results in the past one year, but he has under-achieved a bit. He has a lot of ability." PTI AT AH

Mixed fortunes for Indian squash players in Commonwealth Games

Sun, Oct 10 10 11:27 PM

Sabi Hussain New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) Indian racqueters suffered mixed fortunes in the qualifying rounds of the Doubles events when women''s pair of Anaka Alnakamony and Surbhi Misra triumphed in just 13 minutes but 11th seed pair of Sandeep Jangra and Harinder Pal Sandhu went down fighting to the Malaysians in the Commonwealth Games squash events here. The experienced pair of Alankamony and Misra cruised to an 11-2, 11-4 win over Kenya''s Safina Madhani and Khaaliqa Nimji, both making their maiden appearance in the Games, on a conventional glass-backed court at the Siri Fort Sports Complex. "It went well, we played a few good shots and capitalised on their mistakes. We want to get as close to a medal as we can. We are pairing up well and hope to come out with some good performances ahead," said Misra. The pair showed great athleticism with soft drop shots and dying length to the back corners to outclass their lesser known opponents. Both games saw some excellent volleys and good ground strokes. However, the men''s doubles pair of Jangra and Sandhu failed to rise on the occasion and lost 11-6 7-11 7-11 to sixth seed pair of Mohammad Azlan Iskandar and Mohd Nafiizwan in an hour-long contest. Malaysians again showed their doubles prowess and displayed some excellent volleys and good ground strokes to outclass local stars in the Pool 6 match. "Doubles is a whole different ball game. It''s all about communication. We made a few errors, and they took advantage of us," said Sandhu. The day also saw other top seed pairs including Peter Barker/Daryl Paul Selby of England and Australia''s David Palmer/Stewart Boswell and Kasey Brown/Cameron Pilley dominating the all-glass court. Third seed English pair of Barker and Selby displayed some of their famed dead drop winners to reduce their opponents to a mere spectator. The English pair scored a fluent 11-7 11-6 victory over 14th seed Malta''s pair of Bradley Hindle and Michael Fiteni. The Australian second seed pair of Boswell and Palmer defeated Zambia''s Ray Simbule and Kelvin Ndhlovu 11-3 11-9 in the men''s doubles in just 16 minutes while in the mixed doubles category, Brown and Pilley defeated Malaysia''s Sharon Wee and Ivan Yuen 11-1 11-6 in 27 minutes.

Crowd support made the difference: Brasa

Sun, Oct 10 10 11:17 PM

New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) India''s chief coach Jose Brasa today said crowd support at the packed Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here today played a big factor in the home team''s 7-4 win over arch-rivals Pakistan in their must-win match of the men''s hockey event in the Commonwealth Games. Brasa as well as captains of both Indian and Pakistan agreed that crowd support gave India the edge as they demolished Pakistan to sail into the semifinals of the Delhi Games. "It is incredible to play in front of such a crowd. People here understand their hockey. They know when to cheer and shout," Brasa said at the post-match press conference. Indian captain Rajpal Singh seconded his coach and said the massive home crowd that turned up for the match helped their confidence. "The crowd got us going and possibly the Pakistan youngsters got affected by the crowd," Rajpal said. The deafening noise made by the boisterous crowd got louder and louder as India pumped in goals in quick succession, seven in total. Even high profile dignitaries like UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi, who were watching the proceedings from one of the spectator enclosures, could not hide their emotion and clapped rapturously for the Rajpal-led home team. Pakistan skipper Zeeshan Ashraf also admitted that the vociferous crowd had put them under tremendous pressure from the onset of the match. "Crowd affected our juniors and India''s early goal put us under pressure," Ashraf said. India now face England in the semifinal on Tuesday and a win there would assure them of at least a silver medal. "Our semifinal is against a tough team, England. We will have to play with full concentration to overcome them," Rajpal said.

CWG hockey: India crush Pakistan 7-4, face Australia in semis

Published>Sun, Oct 10 10 09:17 PM

New Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS) Riding high on near-hysterical support from the overflowing stands, India routed Pakistan 7-4 to enter the semifinals of the men's hockey competition at the 19th Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

India finished second behind Australia in pool A standings with nine points and take on Pool B toppers England in the semifinal here Tuesday. Australia face New Zealand in the other semifinal.

Earlier, Australia romped to their fourth win by soundly thrashing Malaysia 7-0 while England overcame South Africa 2-1 and Canada came within two minutes of making the semi-final grade, but eventually drew 1-1 with New Zealand.

Indeed, India put on a dazzling display befitting royalty and in the presence of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as they ran circles around Pakistan, who were done in by the aggression, slick passing and clinical finish of the home team.

Penalty corner specialist Sandeep Singh started the Indian party with two conversions first up (2nd, 11th), followed by Shivendra Singh (19th and 59th), Saravanjit Singh (20th), Dhanish Mujataba (40th) and Dharamvir Singh (46th).

On their part, Pakistan showed only flashes of brilliance and their famed fighting spirit to knock in two goals by Muhammad Imran (27th) and Mumahmmad Rizwan (30th) in a space of three minutes. Irfan Muhammad (57th) and Shakeel Abbasi (67th) were the other scorers.

India could not have hoped for a better start than five penalty corners within 11 minutes and Sandeep converted the first and fifth.

The Pakistan defence was at sixes and sevens in the face of the furious Indian onslaughts as virtually every penetration by the home forwards resulted in a penalty corner.

Past the 19th, Sandeep unleashed a brilliant left-to-right diagonal long shot that Shivendra, positioned behind the Pakistani defenders flicked home to put India 3-0 in the lead.

A minute later, Sarvanjit was lying handy to push home a poor clearance from the sixth penalty corner and the packed stands went into frenzied celebrations.

Thus, a 4-0 lead in just 20 minutes was simply unbelievable, but it accurately reflected India's dominance that left the Pakistanis all but shell-shocked.

But not for long as Pakistan earned their second penalty corner in the 26th minute and Rehan Butt's rebound attempt struck Vikram Pillay on the foot leading to a penalty stroke that Imran converted and Pakistan were in the hunt.

Three minutes later Rizwan got a deflection to Irfan's cross hit from the right as Pakistan reduced the leeway.

In the final minute of the half, India received two back-to-back penalty corners, their seventh and eighth, but could not convert. Pakistan protested both the awards while the Indians claimed a penalty stroke off the second, but their pleas were rejected.

Pakistan began the second-half far more confidently and a couple of chances came their way, but were wasted.

It was not long before India got going and Mujtaba banged home a penalty corner rebound in the 40th and Dharamvir pushed home a Shivendra pass and India were up 6-2.

Pakistan pulled one back when Irfan flicked into net from a penalty corner, but India hit back with a stunning counter-attack that saw captain Rajpal Singh finding Shivendra with a through ball and the striker made no mistake with a powerful drive to goal.

With a four-goal cushion, India relaxed just a bit and it allowed Abbasi to streak in from the right and flick past goalkeeper Bharat Chhetri for the final goal of the night.

Anand draws with Shirov; Kramnik beats Carlsen

Sun, Oct 10 10 08:52 PM

Bilbao (Spain) October 10 (PTI) World Champion Viswanathan Anand got an easy draw as black against Spaniard Alexei Shirov while Vladimir Kramnik of Russia drew the first blood defeating elo favourite Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the first round of Bilbao final masters here today. Anand showcased his new found love for the Berlin defense that came in to prominence at the turn of the century in the brain games world championship final between Garry Kasparov and Kramnik with the later using it to decisive affect in the match. Since then, a lot of analysis and games have been played on the system though Anand used it for the first time as black. It can be termed as a decent start for the world champion as he achieved what Carlsen could not with the slightly unfavourable colour of pieces on the chequered board. As it happened in the game, Shirov was, at first, surprised and could not get his act together for any onslaught. "A dry game with no real mistake", was how the experts summed up the motions on Anand''s table. After an early trade of queens that''s typical of the system, Anand went on an exchanging spree which was clearly a fruition of work at home. The remaining heavy pieces were off the road by the 20th move itself and the draw was the only logical outcome. However, going by the Sofia rules in place here, the players had to continue the battle as agreeing to draws "unless it''s a forced draw" is what the players had to abide by. The game continued in an opposite coloured Bishop endgame and finally the peace was signed after 41 moves. Kramnik outplayed Carlsen out of a Queen''s Indian defense where the former played with white pieces. The Russian went for a solid system and traded the queens early but still kept the dynamic balance he was looking for. Carlsen has been clearly struggling with his form since the Chess Olympiad and it seems he is desperately trying to find it back. The middle game saw Kramnik employing tactics to keep Carlsen under pressure and the Norwegian super talent collapsed when faced against a difficult choice in the final stages of the game. It was almost a ''Zugzwang'' like situation when Carlsen called it a day on move 45. In just a few moves, Kramnik would have escorted an opponent piece back home and the rest was child''s play. In the next round of the four-players double round-robin contest, Anand will meet Carlsen who helped him for his World championship preparation against Vaselin Topalov earlier this year. The Indian ace will yet again play black, but in the remaining four games of the super tournament, he will get three whites. That might well be the time for the World champion to strike. He also said it''s time to reveal all facts as to how the BCCI has sheltered the men at the helm of affairs. PTI MYR TAP

"I park it at Yamuna Bank Metro Station. I have no problems," he said. However, another volunteer Richa felt the police are "a bit" strict. "They take time in checking and frisking. It''s a bit irritating," she said.

Kiwi golden girl almost pulled out of CWG

Published>Sun, Oct 10 10 03:07 PM

Wellington, Oct 10 (ANI): Kiwi golden girl Alison Shanks has revealed she almost pulled out of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi due to fears over her safety.

Shanks, who claimed New Zealand's first gold of the Games on Friday after edging rival Wendy Houvenaghel of Northern Ireland in the individual pursuit final, spent three weeks training in Bordeaux with the rest of the Kiwi track team before arriving in Delhi.

In the days prior to flying out of France, Shanks followed the spate of negative reports about the situation on the ground in India and says she seriously contemplated following road star Greg Henderson in withdrawing, Stuff.co.nz reports.

"There were a couple days there when we were in Bordeaux and there were a lot of media reports flying around. We were in a holding pattern and yes, for sure, thoughts of pulling out did go through my mind," Shanks told Fairfax Media.

"I have to be honest, you do think about your safety at times like that and it's a bigger priority than competing in a bike race. But in saying that, obviously I am so glad we came. The Games has been fantastic and there have been no problems at all," she said.

"Security and safety has been fine and the venues have been fantastic. The reports beforehand were a little nerve-wracking and it put everyone on edge coming in to Delhi. But I think we are better people for coming out of it at the other end."

Shanks will continue to compete in the IP at the track cycling world championships but says her main focus now is on preparing for the women's team's pursuit at the London Olympics in two years' time. (ANI)

Tiger Woods will never get back his 'aura of invincibility', says Oz golfer Thomson

Published>Sun, Oct 10 10 02:57 PM

London, Oct 10 (ANI): Australian golf legend Peter Thomson has said that Tiger Woods, the 14-time major champion, will never regain his aura of invincibility.

Woods failed to win a tournament in a calendar year for the first time in his 14-season professional career in 2010 and retains only a fingertip hold on the world No.1 ranking.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Thomson said that Woods' broken marriage and the public humiliation he underwent after his serial adultery was exposed, has shattered the 35-year-old's confidence.

"His golf peers are not afraid of him anymore and there seems to be a new crop of players coming up and the Tiger era is already finished," Thomson said.

"At the time, he was flying high on his ego and that was the difference between him and numerous other players who are equal in ability. This time, of course, he is deflated and, as we have seen with his record since he has come back, he can't get near the lead. So I think the lustre is gone," he added.

Like last year, the Victorian state government would reportedly again pay Woods a 3.06 million dollars appearance fee to contest the JBWere Masters next month.

Thomson, who is a long-time opponent of appearance fees for golf tournaments, believes that this may be the last time Woods is able to command such riches to show up in Australia.

"I would think that after this one, that will be the end of it because he won't be the dominating figure and he won't win," the five-time British Open champion said.

Woods won last year's Masters at Kingston Heath in the days before the pace of his life and career slowed down following the first revelations of his off-course transgressions. (ANI)

Becks 'warned he would regret 16m pounds libel action against hooker'

Published>Sun, Oct 10 10 02:22 PM

London, Oct 10 (ANI): A lawyer for David Beckham's alleged hooker has warned the footballer that he would regret launching a 16-million-pound libel action against Irma Nici.

The vice girl's lawyer Paul Jensen said Irma would be making further sensational sex claims "within the next three weeks," reports the Daily Star.

She is also issuing a demand for "at least a million dollars" in a counter suit against the 35-year-old football icon.

Bosnian Irma, 25 - who claimed Beckham paid her for sex sessions including a threesome - will be asking for compensation for "physical injuries and emotional distress".

Beckham denies all the allegations.

However, Jensen said: "He is going to pay for this. There will be more revelations and the word best used to describe them is 'explosive'."

Jensen exclusively told his client was "harassed and harangued" and forced to flee when the writ was served.

As a result, he claimed she suffered severe chest pains and spent three days in the cardiac unit of a hospital.

Nici is now in hiding with her mother in a hotel "north of New York City", said Mr Jensen.

"She is still recovering from that ordeal and we will expect Beckham to pay for her medical expenses," he added.

Last week, Mr Jensen filed a motion to dismiss Beckham's libel action at Los Angeles Superior Court.

"It was a tragic and desperate decision to pursue a vulnerable young woman and accuse her of lying. He's going to pay."

A spokeswoman at Becks' lawyers Proskauer Rose refused to comment on Mr Jensen's allegations last night. (ANI)

Vettel wins Japanese GP in Red Bull one-two

Published>Sun, Oct 10 10 02:16 PM

Sebastian Vettel won the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday in a Red Bull one-two with Mark Webber, who stretched his Formula One championship lead to 14 points.

The German led from pole and triumphed comfortably, despite taking the chequered flag just 0.9 seconds ahead of the Australian, for the second year in a row at Suzuka.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, winner of the two previous races, finished a close third.

McLaren's world champion Jenson Button, one of five title contenders, failed in his gamble of starting on harder tyres than the others and was fourth with team mate Lewis Hamilton fifth.

Webber now has 220 points to 206 for Alonso and Vettel, with the Spanish double world champion having won four races to the German's three.

Australian Webber was again lucky, losing second place to Renault's Robert Kubica at the start but gaining it back when the Pole came to a halt on lap three with the rear right wheel missing from his car.

"I'm really, really happy and it's about time," said Vettel of his first win since Valencia in June despite starting eight times on pole.

Webber was also pretty pleased.

"A very good day for me," he declared. "It was probably difficult for me to win the race unless I got the start."

Hamilton, who started with a five-place grid penalty on a weekend where nothing went right for him, dropped to fourth overall on 192 points with his hopes fading.

"I was happy that I finished," said the 2008 champion. "I lost third gear as I was shifting up. It's a tough one for the team. Maybe this is a sign."

Button fell further behind in fifth overall, with 189 points and just three races to try and make up a 31-points deficit if the Briton is to become the first driver since 1957 to win back-to-back titles with different teams.

It was the championship leaders' third one-two finish in 16 races. Red Bull now have 426 points to McLaren's 381 in the constructors' standings.

In an eventful race run in bright sunshine after heavy rain had made the track undriveable on Saturday and forced qualifying to be postponed to Sunday morning, the safety car was deployed for five laps after mayhem at the start.

Renault's Russian rookie Vitaly Petrov piled into the wall while Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa tangled with Force India's Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi.

Women hockey manager, coach summoned for miscalculation fiasco

Sun, Oct 10 10 02:08 PM

New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) Indian contingent Chef de Mission Bhubneswar Kalita today summoned the team manager and the coach of women''s hockey team to explain how the miscalculation blunder against South Africa had happened which had cost the home side a semifinal spot in the Commonwealth Games. Kalita said he will find out from the coach and manager what had actually happened in India''s last group match yesterday and will go forward after that. "I have already summoned the team manager and coach. We have to see what had happened. I will find out what had happened in the match and then will get back to you," Kalita said when asked about the shocking incident. But asked what was the morale of the players after the debacle, he said, "They are upbeat and they are looking for improvement in their performance." After India beat South Africa 3-1 yesterday, coach Sandeep Somesh and captain Surinder Kaur gave a shocker when they said manager Rupa Sahni told them that they need to win with a seven goal margin to qualify for semi final when it was actually four. Kalita was also not forthcoming in another controversial issue -- that of reported abuse of Indian archery team coach Limba Ram by an English team official. "Limba has not told about this (the incident). May be since he is a nice person he does not want to take up the matter. I will speak to him and take action if anything like that had happened," said Kalita. Asked repeatedly if he was aware of abuse of Limba by an English official, Kalita said, "He (Limba) has not told me about it." He also said that he was not aware of any Indian official saying after Ashish Kumar won a silver and bronze that the country could have done better. Kalita said with more gold medals expected to come from some disciplines, including boxing, India is on target to finish second in the overall tally. "We are doing very well, especially in shooting, wrestling and weightlifting. We have even won a couple of medals each in athletics and gymnastics. We are now in second position in medal tally and we are looking to maintain it. We are expecting more gold medals, especially from boxing," he said. "We have already gone past the 2006 Melbourne total tally of 52 medals and 22 gold on the sixth day (of Commonwealth Games). We will surpass the 30 gold we won in 2002 Manchester Games," he said. Henry, Thorpe urged to return from retirement before London Olympics

Published>Sun, Oct 10 10 01:22 PM

Sydney, Oct 10 (ANI): To galvanise the the Australian swimming squad for London Olympics, retired stars like Jodie Henry, Matt Welsh and Ian Thorpe have been urged to come out of retirement and follow Geoff Huegill and Libby Trickett.

Munich Olympian Graham Windeatt asked Swimming Australia to lure recently retired stars ahead of the the London Games.

Australia has dominated the Commonwealth Games pool, but there is a feeling that the nation's younger swimmers, who will spearhead the assault on London in two years time and Rio in 2016, need mentoring.

The reintroduction of some proven, veterans such as Henry, Huegill and Trickett are seen as one way of passing on advice and developing self confidence.

"At major meets when people are swimming well there's a tide people get carried along with and it's self confidence, and when you get to the very elite level I think it's the self confidence that can make the difference, that's why I think Jodie should be encouraged," said Windeatt.

However, Windeatt said the sport's hierarchy should go a step further and do what it could to convince Ian Thorpe to focus on the 100m event.

"Jodie Henry, she's been the world's best. I think Geoff Huegill, and a few others, have proven stepping out of swimming for a while can be good for people," said Windeatt.

"Thorpe is definitely one who should come back. I've been watching 100m freestyle Olympic finals for 10 Olympics and nearly always it's the big guys who win. Eamon Sullivan, as great as he is, is light- framed and there's a lot of turbulence in the second lap," he added. (ANI)

Aussies in command, 384 for five at lunch on second day

Sun, Oct 10 10 01:07 PM

Bangalore, Oct 10 (PTI) Australia were firmly in driver''s seat as they went into lunch 384 for five on day two of the second Test against India at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here. Marcus North who had an indifferent first Test is showing glimpses of returning to form with a solid unbeaten 81 off 155 deliveries with 10 boundaries and a six. Along with wicketkeeper Tim Paine, he added 128 runs for the unbroken sixth wicket stand as the visitors are threatening to pile up a huge total. Young Paine, who proved to be a ''Royal Pain'' during the first Test when he scored 92, got his second Test half-century with a cheeky paddle sweep off Pragyan Ojha. Paine was unbeaten on 52 (113 balls, 8x4) at lunch. Resuming on their overnight score of 285 for five, the duo added another 99 runs without any further damage. The only time when India looked like making a breakthrough was when Paine batting on 40 chased a wide delivery from S Sreesanth to edge it to ''keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. As Paine was on his way back towards pavilion, umpire Ian Gould, who had a suspicion regarding Sreesanth foot landing, decided to call back Paine and refer the decision to the third umpire. The television replays showed that Sreesanth overstepped by a couple of inches. That was the 105th over of the innings. The Indian bowlers however were off-colour in the first session as they let the Australian batsmen off the hook with some poor bowling. The biggest letdown has obviously been the two spinners Harbhajan Singh and Ojha who gave away 196 runs amongst themselves having bowled 61 overs. Harbhajan (2/109) and Ojha (1/87) who took three of the five wickets yesterday, could not make much of an impact. Left arm spinner Ojha in particular repeatedly bowled short giving both Paine and North chance to go for the big heave over mid-wicket. North hit some delightful strokes including a bowler''s back drive off Zaheer Khan. It was done with minimum backlift and went to the boundary in a flash. North was also severe punishing the deliveries which had minimum width. With Paine growing in confidence after his good show in Mohali, the task of dismissing them became Herculean for the Indian bowlers. Although the conditions remained overcast, the Indian seamers Zaheer and Sreesanth could not do much. Neither had the ball reversed much. Both Zaheer and Sreesanth received an official warning from Gould and Billy Bowden respectively for stepping into the danger area.
