Symonds guide Deccan to 6 runs win over Kings XI

Published>Sat, Mar 20 10 11:36 AM

Irfan Pathan's blitzkrieg went in vain as Andrew Symonds produced an all-round display to guide Deccan Chargers to a thrilling six run victory over Kings XI Punjab in an Indian Premier League match here today.

Symonds first scored a spakling 38-ball 53 and then followed it up with the crucial wicket of Mahela Jayawardene (14 off 9) and two important catches off Ravi Bopara (38 off 32) and Irfan Pathan to restrict Kings XI's to 164 for eight.

For Kings XI, Pathan played a gem of an innings with a blistering 60 off just 26 balls to singlehandedly bring the Punjab side inches closer towards the target from nowehere.

Apart from Pathan, Bopara and Jayawardene, only one Kings XI batsmen -- S Sreesanth (12 off 5) managed double figures.

Vaas (2/27) was the pick of the bowlers for Deccan, while Symonds (1/22), RP Singh, Pragyan Ojha and Sharma all accounted for a victim each.

Earlier sent into bat, Symonds notched up back-to-back half centuries in the event while skipper Adam Gilchrist made a quick-fire 12-ball 33 to help Deccan post 170 for seven on the board.

With this victory, Deccan has returned to the top half of the points table with two wins out of three matches, while Kings XI have slumped to their third consecutive defeat in the Twenty20 tournament.

It was a dismal start to Kings XI's run chase as they lost two wickets, including that of their skipper Sangakkara inside the third over.

Last match half centurion Manvinder Bisla was run out for a duck as T Suman came up with a direct hit. Four balls later Vaas castled Sangakkara's timbers with a beautiful off-cutter.

As if that was not enough, Yuvraj Singh's (4) poor show with the bat continued as he ballooned a Vaas delivery to give a simple catch to Gibbs at cover point.

Symonds then sent packing a dangerous-looking Jayawardene and after Bopara's dismissal, victory was just a formality for the Hyderabad side.

But Pathan ensured that it was not an easy win for the Hyderabad side as he used his long handle to great effect and hit three fours and five sixes to take Kings XI very close to the elusive win.

However, it was not to be as needing 19 runs off the last over, Pathan fell to Jaskaran Singh, caught in the deep by Symonds.

Sreesanth came up with three boundaries in the last over but it was not enough to take Kings XI to their first victory in IPL III.

Earlier apart from Gilchrist and Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs made a run-a-ball 23, while T Suman (26 off 22) and Chaminda Vaas (16 off 10) provided the necessary impetus towards the end to take Deccan to the competitive score.

Yuvraj Singh (2/21) was pick of the Kings XI bowlers while Irfan Pathan, Shalabh Srivastava and Bipul Sharma all picked up a wicket each.

Gilchrist was at his destructive best from the onset. He greeted Sreesanth with two fours and two sixes to pile up 24 runs of the second over.

PCB faces fire on contract policy

Published Sat, Mar 20 10 11:22 AM

Karachi, Mar 20 (PTI) Former cricket stars today berated the Pakistan Cricket Board for omitting leading performers from the list of centrally contracted players. The former players were also irate about PCB''s decision to demote some players to the stipends list and awarding central contracts to players, who did not play for the national team last year. PCB yesterday announced a list of 18 players, who were awarded central contracts in three categories, dropping the names of Mohammed Yousuf and Younus Khan. The Board also named 19 players, who will get a stipend of Rs 75,000 per month. "I don''t know what criteria has been followed while finalising the list, but it is amazing that players like Hasan Raza, Sohail Tanvir, Rao Iftikhar, Muhammad Sami, Imran Nazir have been omitted while other promising youngsters like Sarfaraz Ahmed, Khalid Latif and Khurrum Manzoor are now being given stipends," former Test batsman Basit Ali said. The secretary of the Karachi City Cricket Association Siraj-ul-Islam Bukhari said he could not understand how the Board could give just stipends to players like Sarfaraz Ahmed, Latif or Manzoor who were the future of Pakistan cricket. "We will lodge a strong protest with the Board and we want to know in the governing council what criteria was adopted for giving contracts and stipends," Bukhari said. More PTI Corr AT

Chennai Super Kings beat Delhi Daredevils by 5 wickets

Published>Sat, Mar 20 10 11:08 AM

New Delhi, March 19 -- Matthew Hayden butchered Delhi Daredevils bowlers with a breathtaking 43-ball 93 to power Chennai Super Kings to a thrilling five-wicket win in their Indian Premier League match here today. Chennai were chasing a competitive 186 to win but Hayden toyed with the Delhi attack and raised a crucial 78-run third wicket partnership with stand-in skipper Suresh Raina, who scored a sensible unbeaten 49. Raina hit Tillakaratne Dilshan for a six in the first ball of the last over to notch up the win. Hayden scored boundaries at will as his innings contained nine fours and seven sixes while Raina's knock came off 34 balls with the help of three fours and as many sixes. Earlier, it was Virender Sehwag's blazing 38-ball 74 at the top and Mithun Manhas's unbeaten 32 down the order that helped Delhi reach 185 for six, after electing to bat at Ferozeshah Kotla ground. Rajat Bhatia (21) also played a good hand for Delhi after his side suffered a mini middle-order collapse following a good start. For Chennai, Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (2/25) and paceman L Balaji (2/21) took two wickets apiece. Amit Mishra deprived Hayden of a well deserved century having him caught in the deep by Tillakaratne Dilshan. When the Australian started his walk to pavilion his side needed 44 runs from 39 balls to win. Give contracts to Yousuf and Younus: Inzamam

Published Sat, Mar 20 10 10:52 AM

Karachi, Mar 20 (PTI) Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq today slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board for not awarding central contracts to senior players Muhammad Yousuf and Younus Khan. Both the players were recently banned for indefinite period by the Board on disciplinary count. Inzamam, the most capped player for Pakistan, said he was disappointed at the way the board treated the senior players. "It is the board which is showing disrespect to the players. When there is no life ban on Yousuf or Younus then why not give them central contracts?," he fumed "You don''t find players of the calibre of Yousuf or Younus everyday or overnight. They are quality players and Pakistan still needs them. The board has not even bothered to reveal the details of the charges against these two while going about banning them," he added. Inzamam said he saw no sense in the policy of ignoring players banned but awarding contracts to players who were fined and put on probation by the board. "The board has no sound policy and that is why they have not even been able to announce the captain for the T20 World Cup. By delaying the announcement of the captain the board itself is encouraging groupings in the team. "I don''t understand why the delay in naming the captain when the choice is obvious?," he asked. Inzamam wants PCB to appoint Shahid Afridi as captain for the T20 World Cup in the West Indies.

1983 World Cupper Valson sacked after scuffle

Published>Sat, Mar 20 10 10:42 AM

New Delhi, March 19 -- The former Delhi cricketer and a member of the 1983 World Cup squad, Sunil Valson, was relieved of his IPL duties as a vice-president of GMR Sports on Thursday, reportedly because of a scuffle with IPL CEO Sundar Raman before the Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Daredevils game on Wednesday. It has been learnt that the IPL official had asked for a parking pass before the game. "Somehow, either through a delay or because the request for the pass was denied (since the GMR official didn't recognise the IPL official), there was a heated exchange and a scuffle ensued, wherein the IPL official was slapped by him (Valson) and his colleagues," said a source. The issue was reported and was dealt with. "As of now, Valson will not participate in the IPL and has been asked to stay away from the Kotla," the source, who did not want to be identified, added. Valson could not be seen at the Kotla on Friday.

The Emperor has no clothes

Published>Sat, Mar 20 10 10:36 AM

India, March 19 -- I must confess my admiration for all those who are analysing IPL in great depth, giving its vast followers an insight into tactics used and even advising captains what stratagem to put in place so that they can win. My respect for present and former players has grown manifold as they are able to explain so lucidly all the technical brilliance involved in trying to hit every ball for a six, if not a boundary. Their imagination needs to be commended, especially when they pinpoint the mistakes a bowler is making - which is most of the time - while being treated by the batsman like an errant schoolboy who has forgotten his books at home. I am no moron and understand why the thousands who turn up at the ground or the lakhs who remain glued to their TV sets are enjoying each moment of the fare dished out to them. The harder the ball is hit and the longer it traverses in the air brings out the child in us, and what a joy it must be to catch the ball in the stands after it has eluded the best of fielders on the ground. Imagine a day when spectators will be rewarded in lakhs for having caught a batsman in the stands. This heady cocktail of cheerleaders "dressed" to kill, film stars sitting and watching the match in the same stadium and that too with "us" while the best players in the world are sending the ball flying like a missile in all directions must be moments to cherish. Not to forget the heady climax, when the race between runs needed to win and the balls remaining becomes so narrow that the tension it creates is almost unbearable. Yet there are many, like me, who find this whole exhibition of "brilliance" too one-sided and monotonous to enjoy. Each match appears a repetition of the previous one and when almost every ball is hit out of the ground, it loses its novelty. It may be good in small doses but for more than a month watching replay of a replay may not be every ones idea of entertainment. Any sport to be enjoyed has to pit two sets of skills against each other and create conditions and ground rules which do not favour one against the other. Here the batsman is the emperor and the bowler a pauper. So loaded is the game in the former's favour that we might as well replace bowlers with a machine, which can toss the ball for the batsman to whack it as he pleases. There are aberrations, when by default a bowler takes a hat-trick and reduces the match to a one-sided contest. But in doing so he becomes a party-pooper, not just for the spectators but also for those who have invested millions in this industry.

In the story it is a child who speaks the truth. Here, at the risk of being called a dunce, I echo what the child said: "The emperor is not wearing anything at all."

Murray stunned by Soderling, Roddick advances

Robin Soderling of Sweden hits a forehand to Andy Murray of Britain at the Indian...

Published>Sat, Mar 20 10 09:46 AM

Sixth seed Robin Soderling delivered a tennis master class in the opening set before eliminating fourth seed Andy Murray 6-1 7-6 in the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells ATP tournament on Friday.

After saving four break points in the first game, the Swede overwhelmed Murray with a dazzling array of deep top-spin forehands, flat backhands and power serving to race through the first set in just 36 minutes.

Although Soderling wobbled when serving for the match at 5-4 and 30-0 up to be broken for the only time, he recovered to clinch the tiebreak 7-4 when Murray netted a backhand.

The Swede punched his right fist into the air in delight and will next face seventh seed Andy Roddick, who powered his way past Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3 7-5 earlier in the day to reach the semi-finals at Indian Wells for a fourth time.

"It's a big win because Andy is definitely one of the best players in the world," Soderling told reporters after reaching his first semi-final in an elite ATP Masters 1000 event.

"I was pretty sure before the match that it is almost impossible to out-power Andy because he moves really well and he puts everything back.

"I really felt it in the first game, which was a crucial hold for me. After that, I started to play not as aggressive and I was waiting a little bit for my opportunities, and it worked pretty well."

Murray, beaten in last year's final by Spaniard Rafa Nadal, was subdued after the match.

"He played very well to start with and I didn't," said the Scot. "I didn't move particularly well. I was hitting the ball really short and he's obviously got a big game and he was able to dictate all of the points.

SERVING WELL

"So from my side it was poor but he hit the ball really big from the back of the court and served well when he needed to. I made some mistakes in the tiebreak, and that's why I lost."

The big-serving Roddick broke the 18th-seeded Robredo in the 11th game of the second set before holding serve to seal victory in 78 minutes.

"I feel like I'm playing really well on my own serve," Roddick said after booking his place in the last four when the Spaniard hit a forehand long.

"I think I've been broken once, but I don't know that I've had that many break points against me throughout the week.

"That's always a good thing in that holding that easily makes my returns better," added the American, whose victory was his 11th in a row against the Spaniard.

Roddick, who won his 28th ATP title in Brisbane in January, outplayed his opponent with his all-round power game, firing down six aces and hitting 19 winners in searing afternoon heat in the California desert.

Nadal and Croatian Ivan Ljubicic reached the semi-finals from the other half of the draw on Thursday.

Calmness no Achilles heel for Beckham's surgeon

Sakari Orava, a Finnish orthopaedic surgeon, poses at Mehilainen hospital in Turku March 15, 2010....

Published>Sat, Mar 20 10 08:46 AM

When the telephone rang at one o'clock in the morning, Dr Sakari Orava knew it was not going to be a regular Monday.

The call was from AC Milan's club doctor to say David Beckham had injured his Achilles tendon, they would like him to see Orava, for surgery, and could he do an operation later that day?

"It wasn't so easy to get back to sleep," Orava said.

"But I'm a devout Christian, so (my wife and I) prayed ... we said it is not up to us, it's in bigger hands to see if things go fine. I don't need to get stressed, I can be confident," he told Reuters in an interview.

The phone call marked the beginning of unprecedented scenes in Finland as news of Beckham's imminent arrival spread. Crowds at the airport, crowds at the clinic in the western city of Turku, even an appearance by Beckham's celebrity wife Victoria.

Through it all, Orava said he remained calm.

"Of course one thinks about that (the gravity), but it's good I have (experience) so I could tolerate the stress," Orava said.

"There is mental stress and pressure, but you can't show it. The job needs to be done.

"My hands were not trembling."

The surgery on Beckham, completed successfully on Monday, was the latest in a long line of prominent athletes for Orava, who has also operated on Haile Gebrselassie, Josep Guardiola, Didier Deschamps, and Merlene Ottey.

VERSATILE HANDS

The 64-year-old Finn has been blessed with versatile hands, having enjoyed success in both breaking down people as well as fixing them up -- before moving to medicine Orava won the 54 kg boxing title in Finland in 1962.

"Maybe I thought that I had done enough damage, so it was time to repair it," he laughed.

Orava started working as a doctor in 1972, spending evenings in a sports clinic in the northern town of Oulu where he became familiar with athletes' injuries.

"We have lots of Achilles tendon problems in Scandinavia. If you think about the conditions outside, with people running in snowy, icy surfaces, conditions, they have lots of... problems. You saw a lot of those injuries."

Orava then began to work with Finnish track and field athletes, eventually becoming chief doctor for the national Olympic team for four Summer Games from Seoul to Sydney.

His work in soccer began in the early 1990s, helped in part by operations done on Italian track and field athletes in the mid 1980s, and he has done operations in both Italy and Spain for many years.

In Spain Orava has been based in Madrid, but says sometimes he gets requests to travel.

"When I am in Madrid, they may call me from Barcelona and say 'You know, Sakari, we from Catalonia cannot come to Madrid... come to see us, we have a couple of boys who have some problems'," Orava laughed.

CREATE CONFIDENCE

While Beckham was on a different scale when compared to past patients, Orava said there are some similarities in dealing with top athletes.

"Confidence has to be created. One has to speak in a language that athletes understand... You have to know all the details of sports.

"Sometimes I leave it open, say 'you go home and think about this, and contact me if you want to come here'," he added.

But Orava said perhaps his toughest case was one that, on paper, was considered a failure.

When he met Pierluigi Casiraghi in the late 1990s, the Italian soccer player was on crutches, with a brace on his knee and eight operations behind him.

"He injured his knee playing for Chelsea. It was a very bad injury. It was a very demanding task to operate on him for a ninth time," Orava said, noting he and an Italian doctor had to make a new patellar tendon for Casiraghi.

"Statistics show he never came back to play again .. but it was one of the big successes I have done," Orava said.

"After one year, he was ... running. His life had come back."

Casiraghi would ultimately have one more knee operation before ending his playing career.

Roddick broke Robredo in the eighth game of the match to sweep through the opening set in 34 minutes.

The second set went with serve until the 11th game when the Spaniard was again broken and the American made no mistake in closing out the match in the 12th.

Roddick, who won his 28th ATP title in Brisbane in January, outplayed his opponent with his all-round power game, firing down six aces and hitting 19 winners in searing afternoon heat in the California desert.

Davies and Oosthuizen fire record 64s in Morocco

Published>Sat, Mar 20 10 02:06 AM

Britain's Rhys Davies fired a course record-equalling 64 to move two strokes clear of the field after the Hassan II Trophy second round on Friday.

His eight-under-par effort on the Blue Course at the Dar Es Salam complex was matched by South African Louis Oosthuizen, who crammed nine birdies in his 64 to finish in a share of second place.

The 24-year-old Davies reeled off eight birdies to compile a 13-under total of 132, two ahead of Oosthuizen, Frenchman Thomas Levet (65) and Spain's Ignacio Garrido (67).

Welshman Davies is back on the European Tour after qualifying from the second-tier Challenge Tour last year and he finished joint third at the Malaysian Open earlier this month.

"I'm feeling comfortable and enjoying being on the main tour," Davies told reporters. "I enjoy playing golf and I enjoy playing against the best players ... so it's great to be out here.

"Compared to this time last year it's very different. I didn't have any kind of status in Europe on either the Challenge Tour or main tour."

Oosthuizen said the Blue Course was easier than the Red layout he played a day earlier.

"I hit some wayward iron shots today but otherwise it was pretty good," he said. "I putted nicely and basically I am trying to work on my consistency."

Briton Nick Dougherty, who led after a first-round 66, carded a 69 to finish in a tie for fifth place.

Among those to miss the halfway cut was South African Open champion Richie Ramsay of Britain and Ireland's Paul McGinley, who was making his comeback from a five-month layoff after undergoing a sixth operation on his left knee.

Cuttack, March 20 (IANS) An all-round show by Andrew Symonds helped defending champions Deccan Chargers beat Kings XI Punjab for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by six wickets at their new found home base here Friday.

Symonds struck a brisk 53 off 38 balls as Deccan Chargers scored 170 for seven in 20 overs. The burly Queenslander, who was also adjudged as the Man of the Match, picked up one for 22 and also took an important catch to dismiss Irfan Pathan, who tried to steal a win with his brilliant 60, but still Kings XI Punjab fell short of the total and could muster 164 for eight in 20 overs.

For Deccan Chargers it was their first win at their home base of Cuttack, after IPL matches were moved out of Hyderabad due to security situations. It was also their maiden win against the Kings XI Punjab in fifth face-off.

Skipper Adam Gilchrist took the Chargers to a flying start with his 33 off 12 balls hitting four fours and two sixes and by the time he departed, they had 43 runs on board in the third over. V.V.S. Laxman (10) also made his way back to the pavilion soon after he was hit on the forearm by Shalabh Srivastav's wayward throw.

Symonds and Herschelle Gibbs (23) then took the Kings XI bowlers to all parts of the ground with their 55-run stand for the second wicket. Symonds smashed three fours and three sixes during his whirlwind knock. Tirumalasetti Suman also contributed 26 valuable runs at the end as the Chargers put on a challenging total.

Kings XI made a poor start but opener Ravi Bopara (38) continued his good form. Pathan tried to pull off a sensational win with his 29-ball knock hitting five sixes and three fours, but by then the Chargers were on course to deserving victory.

FIFA revenues burst through billion-dollar mark

FIFA President Sepp Blatter addresses a news conference at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich March...

Published>Sat, Mar 20 10 12:46 AM

World soccer governing body FIFA's annual income passed the $1 billion mark for the first time last year and president Sepp Blatter said the money would be used to develop the sport around the world.

"We don't want to have the money here," Blatter told reporters on Friday. "We do not give it back to the rich, we give it to those who don't have it.

"We don't make the rich richer; we help those who have less."

Blatter said that FIFA's finances had attracted less attention as they had improved over the years.

"We are in a very good situation so it's not so interesting any more. Despite the last year feeling the effects of the financial crisis which started in 2008, we are comfortable, but I wouldn't say we are rich."

FIFA said its expenditure for the year was $863 million, leaving a surplus of $196 million.

Blatter said one of FIFA's first moves would be to distribute $200,000 to each of the 208 national federations. Chile and Haiti, both struck by big earthquakes this year, would get extra money, he said.

In addition, he said, smaller nations would continue to get regular help through FIFA's development project known as Goal.

FIFA's finance chief Markus Kattner said the budget for 2011-2014 envisaged a total revenue of $3.8 billion and expenditure of $3.6 billion.

He said 74 percent of expenditure would be spent on football development projects and the organisation of FIFA competitions.

Plushenko pulls out of world championships

Silver medallist Yevgeny Plushenko of Russia gives the thumbs up before the medal ceremony after...

Published Sat, Mar 20 10 12:06 AM

Olympic silver medallist Yevgeny Plushenko has pulled out of next week's figure skating world championships because of injury.

"We've received a mail, he is injured. He will not compete," a spokeswoman for the Turin organisers said on Friday, adding the Russian may come to the event to watch.

Plushenko was examined in St Petersburg and told he should not perform strenuous exercise for at least two weeks because of trouble with his knees, president of the Russian skating federation Valentin Piseyev told local media.

"Unfortunately he will not be able to compete in Turin. His physical condition will not allow him to perform at his highest level," Piseyev said.

Former Olympic champion Plushenko heavily criticised the judging at the Vancouver Winter Games.

The worlds, scheduled only a month after Vancouver, have already been hit by a number of pullouts.

Men's Olympic champion Evan Lysacek of the United States has opted not to travel while China's Vancouver pairs gold medallists Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo have retired.

INTERVIEW - Calmness no Achilles heel for Beckham's surgeon

Sakari Orava, a Finnish orthopaedic surgeon, poses at Mehilainen hospital in Turku March 15, 2010....

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 11:26 PM

Losing quick wickets led to our downfall: Karthik

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 10:52 PM

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Delhi Daredevils skipper Dinesh Karthik said losing quick wickets in the middle overs proved to be his team's undoing in their five wicket loss to Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) here Friday.

Delhi at one stage were cruising to 101 for one, but were suddenly reduced to 107 for four after Muttiah Murlitharan and R. Ashwin struck in successive overs.

'We lost too many wickets at a short span. We definitely have areas to improve. Chennai Super Kings batted and bowled very well to take he match away from us,' said Karthik, who was leading the side in the absence of an injured Gautam Gambhir.

Later, Matthew Hayden, using the mongoose bat for the first time, smashed 93 off 43 balls giving no chance to Daredevils of a fightback.

Karthik said they fancied their chances after Hayden's dismissal but were at least 10 runs short.

'When Hayden got out, we thought we had a chance to comeback in the match but we needed another 10 runs,' Karthik said.

Asked whether the recent losses have broken the team's momentum, Karthik said: 'I don't think so. Every match is a new match. Yes, this for the first time we have faced early losses but there are still 10 more matches to go and we are sure we will make a comeback.'

Karthik also backed an out-of-form Tillakaratne Dilshan and said the team needs him.

'Dilshan has been named the cricketer of the year. I am sure he will come good in the coming days.'

The wicketkeeper also praised young fast bowler Umesh Yadav. 'Umesh is good. He has the extra pace to beat the batsmen.'

Super Kings' stand-in skipper Suresh Raina admitted that power hitting by Hayden turned the match in their favour.

'The way Haydos (Matthew Hayden) dominated the bowlers, it swung the match in our favour,' said Raina.

'We have played well after the loss in the first match and hope to continue the winning momentum.'

PCB to probe Naved''s ball tampering complaints

Published Fri, Mar 19 10 09:52 PM

Karachi, Mar 19 (PTI) Pakistan Cricket Board''s disciplinary committee will meet on Monday to look into complaints that allrounder Rana Naved tampered the ball during the recent national T20 championship in Karachi. Sultan Rana, who heads the domestic cricket operations in the board said that serious allegations has been made against Rana Naved which need to be investigated. "We have received the captain''s and match-referee''s reports and we also have a complaint from the Karachi City Cricket Association," he said. Rana said if need arise the committee would review the footage of the matches and also call Rana to explain himself. The KCCA, in its complaint to the board, has accused umpires of favouring the Sialkot Stallions team (which won the T20 title this year) and also of ignoring ball tampering acts by Rana Naved. Rana was banned for one year and fined two million rupees for misconduct during the Australian tour. The board also excluded him from the list of centrally contracted players today along with the other banned players. Rana said the board viewed ball tampering acts seriously and had recently fined fast bowler Muhammad Irshad, who has played for the Pakistan A team, 10,000 rupees for tampering with the ball in a domestic match. "The disciplinary committee will consider all facts before deciding on the complaint against Rana," he added. PTI Cor ATK

Europe clash sends Fabregas and Henry down memory lane

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 09:46 PM

Arsenal playmaker Cesc Fabregas and Barcelona forward Thierry Henry will have different reasons to feel nostalgic when the current and former captains of the London club face off in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Fabregas, 22, came through Barca's youth programme before joining the Gunners as a 16-year-old in September 2003 and is in the prime of his career, while Henry, a decade older and in the twilight of his, scored a record 226 goals in his eight years with Arsenal before joining the Catalan side in 2007.

The two-legged tie is given even more piquancy by the persistent rumours in Spain and England linking Fabregas with a move to the European champions, where five of his Spain team mates, including defender Gerard Pique, ply their trade.

"He is the one who fires the Arsenal engine," Pique said at a news conference on Friday.

"For sure there are other good players who compliment him but Cesc is the most important."

Fabregas, who has recovered from a hamstring injury and is in the squad to face West Ham on Saturday, has been in sparkling form this campaign, scoring 14 league goals, including two in a match-winning cameo against Aston Villa in December.

France striker Henry, by contrast, has netted only three times for Barca this term and after playing a key role in their treble-winning 2008/09 season has been sparingly used by coach Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola's Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger, who also coached Henry at Monaco, said on Friday he maintained close contact with his French compatriot.

"But I believe what is important is on the day that everyone sees a good football game and that we win it," Wenger told a news conference. "The best way is to focus on us and not too much on our opponents."

CYLINDERS FIRING

Guardiola and Wenger are disciples of an offensive, fast-flowing style of football that relies on dominating possession, quick passing and devastating counter-attacking.

For that reason, Fabregas is likely to be a much more decisive figure in the tie than Henry, although the Frenchman's form has picked up in recent matches and Pique said he was getting back to his best.

"It's very important for us that he is firing on all cylinders," he said.

Barca assistant trainer Tito Vilanova, who coached the young Fabregas, said on Friday it was inevitable that attention would be focused on the Spain midfielder but noted that "Arsenal would not be here if they did not have other quality players".

It was also unavoidable that his potential move back to Barca would be discussed in the media, particularly considering the imminent elections for club president, with each candidate obliged to promise high-profile signings to garner votes.

"Whatever happens, it's a lack of respect to talk about his future because he is currently an Arsenal player," Vilanova told Barca TV.

'Let's make Delhi the Asian capital of sports'

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 09:16 PM

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Delhi should focus on being the Asian capital of sports and work towards bidding for the Olympic Games, V.K. Verma, director general of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, said Friday.

'The security has been unhitched until now and the infrastructure development has been going full swing, all in preparation for the Commonwealth Games. But we have to ensure that the same is being maintained even after the games so that we can hope to win the bid for the Olympic games after this,' Verma said on the concluding day of the two-day Delhi Tourism conclave.

'A sports culture has to be inculcated here. The trigger has been the Commonwealth Games, but let's maintain it. Let's make Delhi the Asian capital for sports,' he added.

Saying that the onus now lies on every Delhiite to get the 'return on investment' that the Commonwealth Games have been, Verma said: 'During the Beijing Olympics, the head of the tourism department said 'the world has given us 16 days, we will give them 5,000 years', meaning that the event would be so spectacular that it will be indelible from one's memory.

'We have got 12 days (Commonwealth Games are between Oct 3-14) and without sounding too boisterous, let's say that in the next 20 years we will be at the pinnacle of all other must-visit places in the world.' he said.

IPL to stay in India: CEO

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 09:08 PM

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Indian Premier League (IPL) chief executive Sundar Raman Friday said that the Twenty20 tournament is going nowhere and statying in India, while the franchises are free to play abroad.

Raman dismissed media reports saying that the IPL commissioner Lalit Modi was mulling the hosting a second IPL abroad.

'This is the Indian Premier League and it will be played in India. But if the IPL franchises want to play matches abroad, then it is upto them. We did have host the last edition in South Africa, which was a blessing in disguise for us as the tournament was exposed to a new market, but the IPL would take place in India,' said Raman, on the sidelines of IPL's tie-up with Topps, global leader in sports and entertainment collectibles.

'We are happy to be back in India this year. People are filling the stadiums and there are no plans to have IPL abroad,' said Raman.

On the growing list of injured playes, Raman said that it would not jeopardise their prospect in next month's Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies.

'Injuries are part and parcel of any game and it's always a concern. Professional players have to face injuries but you cannot blame the first few days of IPL for their injuries. And we are talking about professional players who know their body well,' he added.

Andrey Arshavin launches his own agony uncle advice column!

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 04:38 PM

London, March 19 (ANI): Russian footie Andrey Arshavin is now offering advice to people - he has unveiled a column on his website where fans can ask him about anything, from love to the reason for rain.

When replying to fan's questions on the Ask Andrey section of his website, the Arsenal star, 28, frequently draws upon his experiences with girlfriend Julia, 24, and their kids, son Artyom, four, and daughter Alina, two.

"The Sun has listed some of the questions posted on his site with his answers:

1. WHAT do you think people need pain for?

For people not to forget that they are mere mortals. Some people say that suffering purifies the soul.

2. Sometimes I feel so down. What shall I do?

Try to overcome this situation. Think that after this bad streak there's definitely going to be a good one. Despondency is a sin.

3. I am 25 and still not married. My parents are upset about this. They say I may end up a spinster. But I don't want to get married yet - what should I do?

Step one: You need to find a scruffy, heavy drinker. Step two: Persuade him to marry you. I think for a small amount of money he will agree to fulfil the role of your fiance. Finally, take this guy home. Tell your parents he will live with you. Next time they will think before forcing their opinion on you.

4. Some people say the rain comes when angels cry. What do you think?

I do not think it's angels' tears. It's simply a natural phenomenon. Although it sounds more romantic the way you put it.

5. What does love mean?

You have touched on a very delicate subject. I guess for every person it's something different, something very personal. For me, the perception of love is on an emotional level, rather than in words.

6. Can laughter prolong life?

We have a lot of fun during training at Arsenal. As for prolonging life? Scientists claim it does. If they claim this, probably they are right." (ANI)

Yousuf, Younus and Malik dropped from central contracts

Published Fri, Mar 19 10 04:26 PM

Lahore, Mar 19 (PTI) Banned former captains Mohammad Yousuf, Younus Khan and Shoaib Malik as well as maverick pacer Shoib Akhtar were dropped from the list of players who were today awarded central contracts by Pakistan Cricket Board. The board, however, gave central contracts to three players -- Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal -- who were fined after a probe into Pakistan''s disastrous tour of Australia in January-February. Afridi and Kamran were handed A-grade contracts while Umar Akmal got a C-grade. Yousuf and Younus have been banned for an indefinite period and Malik for 12-months and a fine of two million rupees on the recommendations of an inquiry committee that probed into the poor performances of the team in New Zealand and Australia and reports of infighting. The board had fined Afridi and Kamran Akmal three million rupees each and put them on six-month probation while Umar was fined two million rupees. The board in a change of policy awarded central contracts to just 18 players and stipends to 19 others in new listings. Akhtar''s exclusion was expected as he has not played for Pakistan since May 2009 and has also undergone a knee surgery besides having other disciplinary issues with the board. Also dropped from the new list of contracted players was all-rounder Sohail Tanvir who has been ruled out of action for four months after a recent knee surgery in Australia. MORE CORR PDS

Champ Klitschko wary of 'Fast Eddie'

Heavyweight boxer Eddy Chambers of the U.S. warms-up during a training session for the media,...

Published Fri, Mar 19 10 04:08 PM

No trash-talking, no tempers boiling over at the weigh-in. The build-up to Saturday's Vladimir Klitschko-Eddie Chambers world heavyweight fight in Duesseldorf has so far been all about boxing.

Champion Klitschko takes on American contender Chambers with the WBO, IBF, IBO belts on the line and the 33-year-old Ukrainian favourite wary of his younger challenger's speed.

"Eddie may not be the tallest boxer but he is enormously fast and difficult to box against," Klitschko, whose older brother Vitaly holds the WBC belt, told reporters.

"He is extremely dangerous, super fast, very agile, very athletic and above all he has his mind set on taking the title away.

"But I will not allow that. I have to work hard with my punches," added Klitschko, who at a shade under two metres tall is 13 centimetres taller than Chambers and 15 kilos heavier.

The German-based Klitschko, who boasts a record of 53 victories and three defeats with his last loss in 2004, will also have experience and some 50,000 fans on his side.

His last title defence, against Ruslan Chagaev in 2009, was also held in a soccer arena with a crowd of over 60,000 in Gelsenkirchen.

The 27-year-old Chambers -- with a record of 35 wins out of 36 fights will be hoping to spring a surprise by wearing his giant opponent down.

The Pittsburgh-born fighter, however, is not known as a big puncher, with only 18 of his 35 victories coming by way of knockout.

"I have never prepared better for a fight. Now I want to shock the world and take the title belts off Klitschko," Chambers told reporters during a training session. "I will not do what others have tried. I want this victory."

Bangalore, March 18 -- Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer Praveen Kumar became the sixth player in the history of the Indian Premier League -- first in season III -- to record a hat-trick during his team's third IPL match against Rajasthan Royals here on Thursday. Delhi Daredevils' Amit Mishra, Chennai Super Kings duo of L Balaji and Makhaya Ntini, Kings XI Punjab's Yuvraj Singh (twice) and Deccan Chargers' Rohit Sharma had achieved the feat in the previous editions of the event. Praveen did not have a particular good start to the over as he began with a wide and followed it up with a delivery that was put away for a boundary by Martyn. The Uttar Pradesh seamer responded with a scorching yorker that crashed through Martyn's defence to castle the Australian. Narwal walked out to face Praveen but his turned out to be a forgettable IPL debut as the batsman could not cope with Praveen's well-directed bouncer and fluffed his pool shot and Manish Pandey ran a long way from fine leg and fumbled for a while before completing a fine running catch. Dogra faced the next ball, a straight one which he missed to see his middle stump pegged back as Praveen achieved the feat. OCIs can represent India in sport: HC

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 03:48 PM

New Delhi, March 18 -- In a significant judgement, the division bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has held that the Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) should be accorded the same status as provided to NRIs for representing India in international sports events. The Bench, comprising Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Jasbir Singh, also directed the Union Sports Ministry to allow shotgun shooter Sohrab Singh Gill, an OCI, to represent the country in international events as part of the Indian contingent. The petition stated that Sohrab Gill, son of Punjab Director-General of Police, PS Gill, was born on August 19, 1987 in the United States and had to return to India at the age of one. Thereafter, he got his education in Chandigarh and is presently a third-year student of Law in Panjab University. Gill, who was granted the OCI status on April 4, 2007, has represented India in junior world events and has also won two medals at the Asian Championships in Kuwait in 2007. However, Gill was barred, along with other OCI and People of Indian Origin (PIO) sportspersons, from representing the country in international events, following orders issued by the Sports Ministry on December 26, 2008. The new policy stated that only players who were Indian citizens could represent the country. As Gill was not an Indian citizen, and did not hold the country's passport, he could not don India colours. Punjab Advocate-General, HS Mattewal, who argued for Gill referred to various sections of the Citizenship Act, 1955 and subsequent notifications. He stated that a notification issued on April 11, 2005, had granted OCIs parity with NRIs in respect of all facilities - economic, financial, educational, etc - and since the petitioner was a student and sports was part of education, he was entitled to the same rights as NRIs. The Assistant Solicitor General of India, Anmol Rattan Sidhu, however, argued that the policy issued on December 26, 2008, did not state that OCIs could represent India, as they were not citizens of the country. But an NRI could represent India.

The Bench, however, held that since an NRI was permitted to participate in sports events for India - and facilities available to NRIs had also been granted to OCIs by the April 2005 notification - Gill could not be denied the right to participate.

Bordeaux edge out Olympiakos

Published Fri, Mar 19 10 03:22 PM

Bordeaux, March 18 -- Bordeaux squeezed into the Champions League quarters after a tense 2-1 win over Olympiakos on Wednesday that saw three men sent off. Laurent Blanc's men were 2-0 up on aggregate and cruising after Yoann Gourcuff's sublime early free-kick and the second-half dismissal of Olympiakos striker Matt Derbyshire. Substitute Konstantinos Mitroglou drew the visitors level and Bordeaux then lost captain Alou Diarra after he received a second booking. It made for a jittery final 20 minutes at the Stade Chaban-Delmas, but Marouane Chamakh finally put the tie to bed with an emphatic headed finish in the 88th minute to seal a 3-1 aggregate win. "We scored the goal but then we shouldn't have taken any risks," said Bordeaux midfielder Wendel. "They equalised when it was 10 against 11 and then we had a few problems. "For the next round, I have no preference. There are great sides like Barcelona, Inter and Manchester (United) who are playing well at the moment.

Cuttack cheers for Kings

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 03:08 PM

Cuttack, March 19 -- The Barabati Stadium may be playing host to the Deccan Chargers in the third edition of the IPL but the loudest cheer from the handful of spectators, watching the net session on Thursday, was reserved for Kings XI batsman Yuvraj Singh. The former captain of the visiting side is one of the most popular cricketers in this part of the country due to his hard-hitting abilities and that should ensure that the team gets substantial support in their away encounter. However, public support will be the last thing on the minds of the Kings XI, who are keen to register their first win, and the final outcome will depend on how well their bowlers function against the Chargers' explosive line up. After the initial hiccup, the defending champions got into the groove against Royal Challengers in their last game and start as favourites against a team that is low on confidence after the hammering their bowlers received in Bangalore.

Lead actors missing but the show must go on

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 02:48 PM

New Delhi, March 19 -- For those who'll throng the Kotla on Friday night, comes the distressing news that two of India's idols, Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, will be sitting out with injuries. Suresh Raina, who'll lead the Chennai Super Kings, has called it a great opportunity though - he led Central Zone with mixed results in Deodhar Trophy recently - and has been told by MSD "to keep things simple and stay bindaas". "We'll miss Dhoni, no doubt. He played so well in the last game. But I do have plenty of players with experience," said Raina. In Dhoni's absence, Parthiv Patel will keep wickets and also open. The injury to Gambhir was termed as "reasonably serious" by Daredevils' assistant coach, Eric Simons, on Thursday afternoon and it will be interesting to see who walks in to open with Virender Sehwag. Australian David Warner is waiting in the wings but to include him would mean dropping one foreign recruit to stick to the limit of four players. Rajat Bhatia could step in to fill the void and Simons made it evident by bringing him to the press meet. On paper, the two teams look balanced. The Super Kings' batting matches the Daredevils' but that's not the case with the bowling. Taken apart in the first game, the Super Kings came back, quite sensationally, against the Knight Riders. However, Muttiah Muralitharan and Lakshmipathy Balaji will expect more support from the frontline bowlers - Albie Morkel, Manpreet Gony and Sudip Tyagi. In contrast, Daredevils' Nannes and Maharoof form a better pair with the new ball. Besides the contest, Matthew Hayden's mongoose bat, if he uses it, could be the attraction. "He says he is finding it good. Will he use it tomorrow, can't say for sure," said Raina.

China club pays record $1.6 million for player

Published Fri, Mar 19 10 02:26 PM

China's Shanxi table tennis club has paid a record 11.33 million yuan ($1.66 million) to secure the services of women's world number four Guo Yan on a two-year loan deal, local media reported on Friday.

The 26-year-old, runner up at the 2005 world championships, was bought in an auction of players in Beijing on Thursday in which six men and three women players went for a total of 37.5 million yuan ($5.49 million).

"We never expected such a high price," Liu Fengyan, head of the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA), told the Beijing Youth Daily.

"We want to attract rich companies to our super league so it is good as it shows the value of the league."

Despite the increased popularity of basketball and soccer in recent years, table tennis remains China's national sport and the 10-team super league attracts nationwide television coverage.

The previous record fee for table tennis was the 5.01 million yuan ($733,900) neighbouring Shaanxi paid to win the services of Olympic men's singles champion Ma Lin for one year in 2006.

Guo, who also expressed her surprise at the fee, will take 1.2 million yuan of the cash, her Beijing club 3.25 million yuan with the remaining 6.88 mllion goes to the CTTA to fund the prize pot.

"We feel she's worth it," said Shanxi manager Bai Jian.

Tiger's mistress reveals explicit SMSes

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 01:52 PM

A former porn actress released sexually graphic text messages Thursday that she says prove her affair with Tiger Woods, and she said she may reveal more potentially embarrassing information about the golfer as he prepares to return to competition next month.

Joslyn James, whose real name is Veronica Siwik-Daniels, posted more than 100 messages on her Web site that she says came from Woods and indicate he arranged to have her stay at the same hotel as he did.

Some of the messages show a desire for rough sex. In texts dated Aug. 29, the person she says is Woods says he wants to slap her and that she should beg the next time he sees her.

The messages were released just two days after Woods announced he would end his four-month, self-imposed exile and play at the Masters at Augusta National in Georgia.

A request for comment from a Woods spokesman was not immediately returned.

James denied she was trying to get even with Woods for breaking her heart when he ended their three-year affair and refused to publicly acknowledge it.

"I just wanted the public to know and the truth to be out there for me to have people see what I was being told and not just judge me for being with a married guy," she told The Associated Press. James said she would begin posting in the days ahead some of the more than 1,000 text messages she said she has from Woods. She is only posting messages she says are from Woods and none from herself to the golfer because her cell phone overwrote outgoing texts and she wasn't able to save them.

James said she met Woods while working at a Las Vegas nightclub he frequented.

The final three texts James released were dated Oct. 4 and indicate the sender became enraged with her, apparently after their relationship was nearly discovered.

"Don't ... talk to me," the final one said, using an expletive. "You almost just ruined my whole life. If my agent and these guys would have seen you there."

She said the relationship didn't end, however, until several weeks later.

Shamed by moth attack, Association gets cracking

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 01:42 PM

Ahmedabad, March 19 -- Embarrassed by the moth attack that made playing close to impossible at the Sardar Patel Stadium on Monday, the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) has swung into action. According to GCA secretary, Rajesh Patel, stringent measures are on the anvil to keep the area around the stadium clean and a fogging machine is being used to prevent a repeat incident. "For the past two days, we are using the fogging machine several times a day and will continue doing so till the end of the Ahmedabad leg of the IPL. Tomorrow, a private firm will carry out pesticide treatment inside the stadium," Patel said on Thursday. "Moths are usual at this time of the year, but it was the first time we saw them in such huge numbers. We have taken the help of the municipal authorities as well to keep the stadium clean and are ensuring that people don't litter garbage outside the premises," he added. Several players, including Amit Mishra, Paras Dogra, Shane Warne and Virender Sehwag had complained about the pesky moths after the Daredevils-Royals clash. "We understand players get disturbed if there are so many insects hovering around them. We are trying our best to prevent it from happening again. We didn't face the problem when India played South Africa in an ODI in February. "These things are natural, but not always in our control," Patel said. The moth attack on Monday was accentuated by the fact that it was a day-night match and insects are usually attracted to light. The floodlights and electronic boards were major attractions for the insects and hence the trouble.

Chargers short on confidence

Published Fri, Mar 19 10 01:38 PM

India, March 19 -- Champions Deccan Chargers are not being able to recapture their form of last year. They lost the opening game of this year's IPL when, at one stage, it looked they would coast to a win. And, perhaps, that loss has dented their confidence. It took a few years for players to understand that in the 50-over format, it was not necessary to go slam-bang from the first ball, and that wickets in hand in the last 10 overs invariably ensured a healthy score. The Sri Lankans then showed that innovation is the name of the game as they cleverly exploited the 15-over field restrictions, even if it meant losing a few wickets. In Twenty20 too, teams trying to hit from the first ball onwards are finding that consistency is eluding them. And even if they have players capable of tearing any attack apart, it is not easy particularly after the opposition has got a good score. To chase successfully when the asking rate is over 10 an over, it is good to have an anchorman around whom other innings should revolve. Kallis demonstrated it ably when he first played the anchoring role and then took off vertically to get the Royal Challengers a famous win. The Deccan Chargers have a fabulous batting line-up. Any team that has Adam Gilchrist, Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds and Rohit Sharma in its ranks should be feared. Unfortunately, they all have been trying to hit the ball a little too hard and missing out on the timing factor. No matter how hard you hit the ball, it will still fetch you a boundary or a six. Timing, more than anything else, is the key to dispatching the ball to the boundary. The ease with which Yusuf Pathan hits sixes is because of his timing.

Injured Beckham can heel in time to play World Cup

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 01:28 PM

London, Mar 19 (ANI): The Achilles tendon injury of ace midfielder David Beckham can heel in time to enable him to play his fourth World Cup in South Africa, according to a top sports professor.

Beckham's hopes of making the England squad for South Africa in June looked over after he tore an Achilles tendon while playing for AC Milan last Sunday. rofessor Greg Whyte, who helped fix Beckham's metatarsal injury before the 2002 World Cup, said massive doses of collagen in pill form could dramatically speed up his recovery.

Ex-World Championship pentathlon silver medallist Whyte has used collagen, a protein, to aid tissue regeneration in the past, The Sun reports.

Pentathlon teammate James Greenwell feared his career was over after rupturing an Achilles tendon in 1994. But he was running in 22 days and three months later did a personal best.

Prof Whyte, who was once an injury adviser to Manchester United, runs a business selling collagen.

"It is definitely something I would recommend for David. It can help heal quickly. The World Cup can be done," Whyte said.

A spokesman for Beckham, 34, said: "David has leading care and advice." (ANI)

Streaker's dash overruns Clarke sledging

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 01:08 PM

Wellington, Mar. 19 (ANI): A streaker got the Basin Reserve crowd going today just as Australian vice-captain Michael Clarke arrived at the crease.

The crowd of around 4000 people met Clarke's arrival with loud cheers and jeers.

Chants referring to his broken engagement with model Lara Bingle included "Where's the ring?", "Ring, ring, ring", "Where the bloody hell are ya?" as well as clapping and loud chants of support for the Black Caps.

The streaker ran across the field nude with "Nanna told me not to" written on his back, dodged four security guards and cleared a picket fence before he successfully made his escape from the ground.

It is believed the man had formed a Facebook group to gain support for his streak.

Police said the streaker had not been apprehended and only a cursory search would be carried out. (ANI)

Oz players cleared of racism charges against Indians

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 12:52 PM

An Australian club cricket team, accused of racially abusing players of Indian descent during a match, has been cleared of the charge even though two of its members were banned for sledging.

After a marathon hearing stretching over nine hours, the Geelong Cricket Association last night dismissed charges of racial abuse as "unsubstantiated".

The racial abuse complaint was made by Waurn Ponds' club against members of the Thomson club.

"The hearing found two Thomson players and one Waurn Ponds player had breached the GCA's code of conduct in relation to sledging and playing outside the spirit of the game," the 'Geelong Advertiser' reported.

"Thomson captain Michael O'Neill and teammate Morgan Cleary were banned from tday's semi-final and received a three-match suspended sentence until the end of the 2011-12 season for breaching the players' code of conduct.

"One Waurn Ponds player, Chandranraj D. Basavaraju, was issued with a reprimand plus a two-match suspended sentence until the end of 2011-12 after being found guilty of breaching the players' code of conduct," it added.

Thomson was also slapped with with a 1000 dollars fine suspended until the end of 2011-12. The probe was launched after a written complaint from the Waurn Ponds Cricket Club on Sunday which stated that six Waurn players of Indian descent were racially abused by Thomson players in a fourth-grade qualifying final last Saturday.

"The GCA, Thomson and Waurn Ponds cricket clubs are unanimous in their conviction that racism has no place whatsoever in any level of cricket or society in general," GCA president Grant Dew said after the hearing.

"This investigation has underlined cricket should be a sport that is competitive but also enjoyable to players of all backgrounds, cultures and abilities.

"It is clear that the match involved in this investigation was far from enjoyable for many who participated, which is a poor reflection upon our sport," he added.

Thomson president Laurie McGovern said he was glad that his players were cleared of racial abuse charge. "We are pleased that our players have been cleared of the serious charge of racial vilification. Equally we recognize the importance of playing in the right manner and we realize that, like all clubs, we have a role to play in educating our members in this issue," he said.

Waurn Ponds president Daniel Breen said his club's complaint had done the job of highlighting a major on-field problem.

"We are pleased to have brought this issue to light and hope that this process will help bring about an improved environment for everyone involved in cricket," he said.

Clarke scores 14th Test hundred in Wellington Test

Published>Fri, Mar 19 10 12:38 PM

Wellington, Mar. 19 (ANI): Australian vice-captain Michael Clarke has returned to the Test team in emphatic style scoring his 14th Test hundred against New Zealand in Wellington.

Clarke (100 not out) put aside his broken engagement to celebrity model Lara Bingle to help Australia to a comfortable 4/316 at stumps.

Western Australian left-hander Marcus North, whose position in the team was under intense scrutiny, is 52 not out after sharing in an unbeaten partnership of 140 with Clarke..

Earlier, opener Simon Katich got Australia off to a solid start, scoring a typically gritty 79 before being trapped LBW by debutant Brent Arnel

Katich, who hit eight fours and one six, was lucky not to be out caught behind on 68 off Tim Southee's bowling and again next over he gave a chance to mid-on from spinner Daniel Vettori on 70.

Ricky Ponting was run out soon after lunch for 41 after a mix-up with Katich, who pushed a ball to cover and the skipper hesitated before falling well short of his ground at the striker's end.

Katich, who appeared to be the one who called, threw his head back in disappointment at his role in the key dismissal and Ponting was furious as he departed.

Mike Hussey (4) was caught in slips off Chris Martin's bowling, making it 3-115.

After the dramatic and last-minute withdrawal of opener Shane Watson, Australia reached 1-93 at lunch.

Watson pulled out with a hip injury after a bruise inflicted by Kiwi paceman Shane Bond during the one-day international series developed into a muscle strain.

The 21-year-old Hughes, playing his seventh Test, slashed a wide ball from debutant seamer Brent Arnel to slip in the sixth over.

Hughes hit four boundaries and faced only 24 deliveries.

Team physio Alex Kountouris said it was hoped Watson would be available for the second Test in Hamilton starting on March 27.

Kountouris said Watson was struck on the hip/backside area during the fourth one-day international against New Zealand in Auckland on March 11.

He said Watson played the fifth ODI game two days later in Wellington and felt only mild discomfort.

Australia named Victorian quick Clint McKay as 12th man while spinner Jeetan Patel will carry the drinks for the Black Caps.

Teams:

Australia: Rick Ponting (capt), Simon Katich, Phillip Hughes, Mike Hussey, Michael Clarke, Marcus North, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Ryan Harris, Doug Bollinger, Clint McKay (12th man).

New Zealand: Daniel Vettori (capt), Tim McIntosh, BJ Watling, Peter Ingram, Ross Taylor, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum, Daryl Tuffey, Tim Southee, Brent Arnel, Chris Martin, Jeetan Patel (12th man). (ANI)
