Jones asks Aussies to learn the 'art of cricket' from 'genius' Tendulkar

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 12:22 PM

Melbourne, Oct 16 (ANI): Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar's dominance in batting is well known, but what makes him a genius and separates him from other batsmen in world is his ability to perform the basics in a better manner, and that too also in pressure conditions, according to Australian legend Dean Jones.

"Tendulkar is a freak, a pure sporting genius. I have seen a few in my time, such as Viv Richards, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting, players who had something different to others," Jones said.

"What makes a genius? To me, the difference between a genius and mere mortals is that their defence is better. They perform the basics better. When athletes or teams are under pressure and momentum goes against them, it is their defensive skills that stand out the most," he writes in The Age.

"For a mortal to aspire to something higher, he needs to know this. Take Andrew Symonds, whose defensive game was non-existent when he started playing Test cricket. He learnt to defend and became a better player," Jones said.

Commenting on the Australian players slide in form during the Test series in India, Jones said that spinner Nathan Hauritz was struggling because he forgets the basics of bowling under pressure.

"He simply cannot bowl six balls in a shoe box when he is under the heat. For Marcus North, his problem is that he does not read the length early enough and doesn't play straight early. Therefore he struggles with inconsistency. Our top-line bowlers do not bowl straight enough, particularly to new batsman at the crease. Just basics, really," he said.

Jones further asked Australia to take a few lessons from Tendulkar in the way he goes about his game, and added that never mumbles to himself when he is batting, never curses or gets rushed or irritated.

"Tendulkar is 37 and showing everyone up; making runs at will. He has about six gears in his batting, but for a while he was boring to watch as he never got out of third. Now, his attitude has changed and he is bringing some fun into his batting by hitting sixes. His current bat has made 13 Test centuries," Jones said.

"He is meticulous about the way he prepares for a series or a game. When India is training, you never see him sitting down, he is always busy. Tendulkar hates running and is not keen on the gym. But he works hard on the stationary bike and watches what he eats. He plays enough cricket and makes enough runs to keep himself in top condition," he added. (ANI)

CWG changed behaviour of Delhi: Chidambaram

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 12:06 PM

New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS) Relieved that 'no one has found anything negative about security' measures for the just concluded Commonwealth Games, Home Minister P. Chidambaram Saturday said the mega event had led to a 'better' outlook among Delhiites towards security personnel and safety rules.

'I am gratified that no one has found anything negative about security. People also have learnt that tight security measures are a must for a modern city. The behaviour of Delhi has changed and this change is for better,' Chidambaram said here.

He was addressing the only women's battalion of the Nagaland Police that had been deputed for security at Delhi market places during the Oct 3-14 event.

Chidambaram expressed hope that the 'remarkable' perceptional change towards security measures 'is not a temporary change'.

'It must remain forever. Delhi people must also learn how to follow the rules and drive in lanes. People must learn to respect policemen and police women,' he said.

The home minister heaped praises on the Delhi Police, paramilitary forces and police forces drawn from different states for the 'stupendous job' of providing flawless security during event.

'Nothing can compensate for the hours put in by police men and women. They stand on roads for 12-14 hours a day and that's not easy,' he said, and also acknowledged that police behaviour has also changed tremendously.

'They are far more polite now and perform their duty with a smile. This must not change,' he said.

PCB chief Butt to seek extension for another term

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 11:44 AM

Islamabad, Oct 16(ANI): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ijaz Butt is expected to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also the PCB patron-in-chief, to seek extension for his position.

"The meeting is expected any time within the next four to five days. It is a crucial meeting in wake of rumors of possible changes in the PCB set-up," the Nation quoted a source, as saying.

"The PCB chairman may also seek the President's guidance regarding some tough decisions which need to be taken in wake of the recent betting and match-fixing controversies," the source added.

The source however ruled out any changes in the top hierarchy of the PCB, saying that there was no such possibility unless and until Butt himself made such a request.

Earlier, it was reported that Butt had been told by higher authorities to appoint new board officials or forget about getting an extension to his two-year term, which expires this month.

"Ijaz has been told he can continue till the World Cup, but only with a new team and the present set of officials should be changed. The orders have come from the top including the President who is also chief patron of the board and the Prime Minister," another source had said.

The source had also said that former captain Javed Miandad was expected to get more authority in the new set-up.

"Until now Ijaz has kept Miandad sidelined by making him director cricket, but virtually giving him no authority or say in cricket matters at all. But the higher authorities now want Ijaz to bring about changes and try to put Pakistan cricket back on the right track," he added.

Butt was appointed as PCB chief by Zardari in October 2008. (ANI)

Medal sweep brings fame to Australian swimmer Alicia Coutts

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 11:26 AM

Sydney, Oct 16 (IANS) Life has changed overnight for Alicia Coutts, a relatively unknown Australian swimmer who won five gold medals at the 19th Commonwealth Games.

Coutts, 23, who travelled to India on the undercard, was so obscure she's never had a sponsor, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

But now life has changed. Earlier, when people were asked about Coutts, who she was, no one had any idea. After the Delhi Games, they might recognise her.

Many doubted her capacity to push through from the ranks of relay swimmers to stand alone on top of the podium.

Even Coutts, who made the final of the 200m individual medley in Beijing but struggled to get back to her best after abdominal surgery, was close to quitting, the report said.

'I actually didn't know if I wanted to swim any more. I always had in the back of my mind, 'Will I ever be back to where I was?' I've definitely got over that,' said a jubilant Coutts.

Confident of being cleared of spot-fixing charges: Salman Butt

Sat, Oct 16 10 11:22 AM

Karachi, Oct 16 (PTI) Pakistan''s suspended Test captain and opener Salman Butt says he is confident of having his name cleared in the spot-fixing scandal that shook international cricket. Butt told mediapersons at the National Cricket Academy yesterday that he was looking forward to the appeal hearing being held by the ICC at Doha on October 30 and 31. Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Aamir and Mohammad Asif were suspended by the ICC in the first week of September while in England. Their suspensions came after the ''News of the World'' tabloid broke a story claiming that the agent for the three players, Mazhar Majeed, had on video confessed that he had paid bribes to the trio to do spot-fixing in the fourth Test against England at Lord''s. The trio have appealed against their suspensions and the ICC has now scheduled their hearings in Doha under the supervision of Michael Beloff QC. While the ICC is carrying out its appeal process, the three players continued to be under investigation by the Scotland Yard for alleged spot fixing and conspiracy to defraud bookmakers. The 26-year-old Butt, who has played 33 Tests and 78 ODIs, claimed the allegations had disturbed him and his family. "But I am ready to fight on and I am confident of positive result at the hearing," he added. "Everything was going well when this happened and it was very disturbing and disappointing. But it has also been big lesson for me," he said. "It has taught me a lot about how to deal with the people around you and how to be aware of the people around you.It has made me realize to differentiate between friends and foes." The opener, who led Pakistan in the Tests in England including two victories over Australia and England before the spot fixing allegations broke out, said he had not given up and was continuing his daily training and practice sessions at the national academy. "I keep on doing my training and practice for two hours daily. Because I want to remain in touch." Butt didn''t rule out the possibility of getting a chance to play against South Africa in the UAE next month. "I am working hard and doing my bit. The conditions in Lahore and the UAE are the same so I am preparing hard on playing spin," he said. Meanwhile, the lawyers for Butt and Aamir confirmed on that they had received the charge sheets and all related material and documents from the ICC for the appeal hearing. "We have got details of the charges against the players but it is strictly confidential and we are not allowed to discuss it publicly," Butt''s lawyer, Aftab Gul said.

Negative media campaign hit Delhi's business during CWG: Report

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 10:52 AM

Melbourne, Oct 16 (IANS) Negative campaign by the international media ahead of the Commonwealth Games badly hit the business of Delhi's shopkeepers, restaurant owners and taxi drivers during the mega event, an Australian newspaper said Saturday.

Business had been bad across the board with the athletes being advised to stay inside the confines of the Games Village on security grounds and journalists tending to use the official hotels, The Age said.

'Shopkeepers, restaurant owners and taxi drivers all invested in refurbishment and redecoration in anticipation of the extra trade they would get. And all of them suffered,' it said.

This was because the English and Australian coverage concentrated on the negative aspects of the Games, the daily said.

There was also the press coverage of the troublesome bus system and the dengue fever and malaria, the report said.

It took the 16-year-old British diver Tom Daley to cut through it all. ''Obviously I have read all the stories in the newspapers, but once we got here everything was great,'' said Daley.

What really marred the Oct 3-14 Games was the attitude of the other major Commonwealth countries. The Games were hugely devalued by top athletes who pulled out because they said they were too wary to come, the paper said.

Butt gets more criticism for millions spent on foreign trips

Sat, Oct 16 10 10:22 AM

Karachi, Oct 16 (PTI) Pakistan Cricket Board''s embattled Chairman Ijaz Butt has come in for more criticism after details of his extravagant spending on foreign tours since taking over were submitted to the National Assembly''s standing committee on sports. According to details, Ijaz Butt from October 19, 2008 to September, 2010 has spent approximately Rs 15 million from the PCB coffers on his foreign visits under the heads of daily allowances, air travel and hotel costs. The details submitted to the committee show that Butt, who works in a honorary capacity in the board, has made 30 foreign visits. The documents show that Butt, in his two-year tenure in the board, has spent some 233 days abroad. The documents show that he claims a daily allowance of 300 pounds while in England and USD 300 while travelling to other countries. The longest stay abroad for Butt came in the West Indies where he remained for 23 days and drew daily allowances worth Rs 7.9 million from the PCB coffers. The documents show that he has mostly travelled abroad in first class and the board has spent nearly Rs 4.7 million on his travel. While in other countries his hotel bills have been around Rs 2.1 million rupees. The documents show that in March, 2009 he went to Colombo via Dubai for the Asian Cricket Council meeting and PCB had to spend Rs 148,000 on his ticket although there were cheaper airlines available for travelling to the Sri Lankan capital. In September, 2009 he went to attend a meeting in London and his ticket cost Rs 200,000 to the board. During the Twenty20 World Cup he went to the West Indies with his wife and the board spent Rs 1.5 million on his travelling costs. In the West Indies his domestic travelling bill was also taken care off by the PCB. During his trips abroad he has also gone to Germany. This year when Butt went to England for the Australia series his travelling expenses came to 10,150 pounds (Rs 1.3 million). Butt was appointed as Chairman of the board by President Asif Zardari in October, 2008 in his capacity as chief patron of the board and despite mounting criticism the Presidency has given no indication of deciding to remove Butt.

Pacesetting Mediate tightens grip at CordeValle

Sat, Oct 16 10 08:16 AM

Rocco Mediate edged closer to his first PGA Tour victory in eight years by grabbing a three-shot lead in Friday's second round of the Frys.com Open in San Martin.

A stroke in front of the chasing pack overnight, Tour veteran Mediate fired a sparkling six-under-par 65 for a 13-under total of 129 at CordeValle Golf Club.

The 47-year-old American needed a total of only 23 putts as he ended a sunny day three ahead of Japan's Ryuji Imada, who carded a 67.

Former world number one David Duval fired a bogey-free 65 to lie four shots off the pace, level with fellow American Dean Wilson (64).

U.S. Ryder Cup player Rickie Fowler (65) and Swede Henrik Stenson (67) were among a group of five bunched at eight under in the third of five events in the PGA Tour's Fall Series.

Mediate, who won the most recent of his five Tour titles at the 2002 Greater Greensboro Classic, was delighted to be in a good position to end his victory drought on the U.S. circuit.

"I want it," he told reporters. "I want to be able to go out tomorrow and see what I got. I like to have attention, but I just want to see what I can do out there. I can't wait."

Having opened with a blistering 64 that included a hole-in-one, Mediate experienced a measure of self-imposed pressure overnight in his bid to maintain form.

"Starting out this morning, I was a bit nervy for sure because you just want to go out and try to shoot (a good number)," he said. "Did I think I was going to shoot six or seven under? No.

"You never think that's going to happen, but, of course, I want it to. The human factor kicked in a little bit. But it was good. My game was solid all day."

Mediate drained a monster 40-foot putt at the par-five 12th for his first birdie of the day after playing the back nine first.

Out in three-under 33, he conjured another magical shot when he holed out with a seven-iron from 158 yards to eagle the par-four fourth.

"I hit it a foot or two to the right of the pin, there is a slope out there and it kicked up a little bit," Mediate said.

"One of the marshals was standing by the ropes and he is walking it down going: 'Go, go, go'. It was pretty cool."

The cut fell at level-par 142 with former major winners Trevor Immelman of South Africa and Americans Mark Brooks and Tom Lehman among those missing out.

World Cup bids picture clearer as U.S. focuses on 2022

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 06:18 AM

The World Cup will definitely return to Europe in 2018 while the 2022 tournament will now be held in the United States or Asia after the battle lines for the bidding process were finally drawn up on Friday.

Europe was always expected to win the right to stage the 2018 tournament after a 12-year gap but that only became official when the U.S. announced on Friday they were pulling out of the 2018 race to concentrate on 2022.

The decision, which had been expected for months, left just four European candidates, Belgium/Netherlands, England, Russia and Spain/Portugal, in the running to host the 2018 finals.

Under FIFA rules, the World Cup cannot be held on the same continent for successive tournaments, so the 2022 finals must now be staged by either the U.S. or one of the four Asian bidders -- Australia, Japan, South Korea and Qatar.

Soccer's world governing body FIFA, which will meet in Switzerland on Dec. 2 to select the 2018 and 2022 hosts, welcomed the American move.

"We have had an open and constructive dialogue with the USA Bid for some time now, after it became apparent that there was a growing movement to stage the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Europe," FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said.

"The announcement of today by the USA Bid to focus solely on the 2022 FIFA World Cup is therefore a welcome gesture which is much appreciated by FIFA."

BEST INTERESTS

Australia and Japan withdrew from the 2018 race earlier this year after it became clear Europe, which last hosted the World Cup in 2006 in Germany, was almost certain to win the vote.

"We are confident this is in the best interests of the USA bid," U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said.

"We wanted to make the announcement now, still 48 days before the final decision, in order to make our intentions clear during the last part of our campaign."

Shortly after the U.S. announced their withdrawal, England formally pulled out of the running for 2022.

There were no immediate announcements from the other European bidders but they will all be expected to complete the formalities before the FIFA Executive Committee meets in Zurich in two weeks to finalise the voting process.

"England 2018/22 today confirmed to FIFA that it was withdrawing its candidature from the FIFA World Cup 2022 and will now focus on its bid to host the tournament in 2018," the England bid team said on Friday.

"This followed consultation with UEFA President Michel Platini on the most appropriate moment to withdraw.

"England 2018 is delighted it is now clear the FIFA World Cup will be coming to Europe in 2018 following the withdrawal of the United States bid."

This year's World Cup was held in South Africa and the 2014 edition was awarded to Brazil under the continental rotation system that FIFA has since scrapped.

This year marks the first time FIFA has decided the venues for two World Cups at the same time.

Liverpool change hands after 'penalty shootout'

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 05:16 AM

Liverpool's tortured takeover battle ended on Friday with the owners of Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox completing their 300 million pounds ($480.8 million) purchase of the Premier League club.

New England Sports Ventures (NESV) said the deal, welcomed by jubilant fans but dismissed as an "epic swindle" and "organised conspiracy" by ousted co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks, had eliminated all of the acquisition debt placed on the club by the American pair.

In what could be a major boost for the struggling Merseyside team's embattled manager Roy Hodgson, the new owners added that the club's debt servicing obligations had been slashed from between 25 and 30 million pounds a year to two to three.

"As any Liverpool fan knows, the most nerve-racking way to win is the penalty shootout," chairman Martin Broughton told a throng of reporters gathered outside the headquarters of a London law firm as he announced the change of ownership.

"But in the end, as long as you get the right result, it's worth the wait. We got the right result," added Broughton, who will stay on to oversee the transition.

However, Liverpool still face the prospect of a protracted legal battle after lawyers for Hicks and Gillett vowed to fight on "with all of their legal energies" in a claim for damages of $1.6 billion.

They also said they intended to return to the London High Court as part of that bid, with some analysts suggesting the legal battle could go on for years.

"Frankly, I think it's the beginning of a long book, rather than a final chapter," said Rick Horrow, a sports lecturer at Harvard Law School.

TEXAS BREAKTHROUGH

The day had started with a breakthrough in Texas, where a judge lifted a restraining order that had prevented NESV from going ahead with the deal on Thursday.

It ended with new owner John W Henry declaring himself proud and humbled with his purchase, telling the fans what they wanted to hear.

"We regard our role as that of stewards for the club with a primary focus on returning the club to greatness on and off the field for the long-term," he said.

"We are committed first and foremost to winning. We have a history of winning, and today we want (Liverpool) supporters to know that this approach is what we intend to bring to this great club."

Liverpool, the five-times European champions, are one of England's greatest clubs with a brand of global stature despite their last league title coming 20 years ago.

However, they have had a nightmare start to the season and are currently 18th in the 20-strong Premier League with just six points from their opening seven matches.

Speaking before the deal was confirmed, Hodgson said a cloud had been lifted.

"It's a very good day for the club," he told a packed news conference at the club's training ground. "It's a relief ... it has been a very difficult couple of weeks ... We've had to live through that bad time."

LOCAL DERBY

Friday's outcome, desired by so many Liverpool fans, will be especially welcome ahead of Sunday's local derby away to Everton, a hugely important game given the club's precarious league position although one that Henry will miss.

"It's better for our first experience of our supporters to be at home," he said.

The amount of money the former co-owners, who bought the club in 2007 and have been left more than 100 million pounds out of pocket, have vowed to pursue in damages was scoffed at by some commentators.

"They're hoping for a settlement," said Robert Boland, professor of sports management at New York University.

"You never sue for a little. Every (car) bumper tap in New York City is worth $2 million in damages. You always put the biggest number you possibly could imagine for damages on the lawsuit to start."

Hicks and Gillett had faced a Friday deadline to repay more than 200 million pounds worth of outstanding debt to the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), the club's major creditors, who welcomed the new owners and rebuffed the old.

"RBS is pleased the sale of LFC to NESV has been completed and are confident this will provide the foundation for the club and its fans to enjoy renewed success on and off the pitch," the bank said in a statement.

"RBS is aware of reports that Mr Hicks and Mr Gillett may intend to pursue further litigation in relation to the sale of Liverpool F.C.

"The English Courts have described claims made to date as 'not realistic and abusive'. Any further claims against RBS will be vigorously opposed," it added.

Kashyap wants men to match women's success

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 04:52 AM

No crowns come easy in international sport, but P Kashyap reckons he'll need to work doubly hard to fight pitched battles in the competitive men's fields and get coronated king, even as women's badminton rules the charts with shuttle queens Saina Nehwal and Jwala Gutta at home.

Besides his two contemporaries and some seasoned rivals in India including Chetan Anand, who on his day can turn devastating, 23-year-old Kashyap also has to contend with India's illustrious history in the sport that has Prakash Padukone, Syed Modi and his coach P Gopichand, before he is granted the pre-eminence he seeks in his playing career.

That's one too many shadows to step out from, and some mighty boots to fill. Also a reason why the Hyderabadi prince-in-waiting is willing to bide his time and work his way up to where he sees himself in the coming seasons. "I want to be No.1 in India," he says, content at having beaten Chetan Anand in the bronze play-off of the Commonwealth Games, but adding, "but I want to go beyond that and reach a stage where men's badminton is as visible and recognized as the women's is right now.

"If I play World No.1 Lee Chong Wei next time, I want people to watch me in action and consider me a contender, but for that I'll have to reach that level and gain their faith."

It's a tall task, but Kashyap, who helped India to a silver medal in the team event when beating Rajeev Ouseph of England and also scalped Malaysian Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, believes he now has the confidence of beating top players, save the big 2 ? Chong Wei and Chinese Lin Dan.

Kashyap had fancied his chances against Ouseph a second time in the semis of the individual medal event, but plunged into the familiar pressure whirl that has seen him fritter advantageous positions at many tournaments. His frozen movements never thawed against Ouseph in the semis, and there's regret after watching the final, that the silver was up for grabs, if not for the stiffness that gripped him due to pressure. "I didn't sleep the night I lost to Rajeev, so I desperately wanted to be on the podium for the bronze at least. Also, my coaches had put their trust in me in the team event, so I had to prove to myself too that I could beat Chetan," he says, adding that his Indian opponent remains a dangerous prospect owing to his fluid play ? on his days.

His first win against Chetan in five matches also helped fulfill a dream that he's harboured for four years now, ever since he missed the bus to Melbourne. Hearteningly for him, even Chetan walked upto him and told him that had he not scuppered his chances against Ouseph in critical moments, India could've won a silver more.

Big wins in hard-fought matches have come intermittently, however the misses have been more than the hits. "I never forget how I've lost some narrowly - the way I went out at the Asian championships and then Vietnam, coaches have asked questions, and these defeats haunt," he says, adding that the World Championship loss was gutting, after he'd worked so hard and exited in the opening round after meeting a Top-10 player. "I worked harder for the CWG and ended with the bronze, so it's clear that there's just more hard work ahead," he says.

Besides support from team-mates, there was also the holy prasaad his mother had carried to Delhi hoping for a medal. "I was doubly scared that if I lost the bronze match she'd lose faith!" he joked. Ready with a quip always, he is well-equipped to handle the lows, even as he sets eyes on the highs, taking the men's cause further even as queens rule badminton.

Debutant Ingram hits century to sink Zimbabwe

Sat, Oct 16 10 04:36 AM

Colin Ingram became first South African to score a century on his one-day international debut as the hosts beat Zimbabwe by 64 runs on Friday.

Ingram, 25, batted at number three in place of the injured Jacques Kallis and scored a well paced 124 runs from 126 deliveries as South Africa piled up 351-6 in their 50 overs in the first ODI.

Opener Brendan Taylor did his best to keep Zimbabweans in the game with a spirited 145 not out from 136 balls but the gulf in class between the teams was always evident as they finished on 287-6.

Opener Hashim Amla laid the foundations for the win with a swashbuckling knock of 110 from only 96 balls, including 14 boundaries.

David Miller finished things off in style for the home side with a carefree 51 from 31 deliveries containing, five fours and two sixes.

Fast bowler Shingirai Masakadza summed up the Zimbabweans' day with a career best, if expensive, haul of four for 86.

Ousted Liverpool owners plan return to UK court

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 01:56 AM

Lawyers for former Liverpool co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett intend to return to the High Court in London as they begin their bid to secure damages from the sale of the club to NESV.

Texas attorney Tom Melsheimer, who represents the two Americans, told Reuters they want relief from Thursday's High Court ruling that ordered them to halt proceedings in Texas and said they were consulting with English counsel.

Earlier, a statement issued on behalf of the pair said they were seeking at least $1.6 billion in damages from what they called "an illegal sale".

Lawyers for the duo withdrew a temporary restraining order in a Dallas court on Friday but then said they would be turning their attention back to the High Court in London, which on Thursday ruled they had no right to act in Texas.

Melsheimer dismissed media reports that Hicks and Gillett's withdrawal of their case in Texas meant they were no longer seeking damages and that was confirmed by Keith Oliver, of Peters and Peters in London, who represent Hicks in the UK.

"Not at all," he said, adding the withdrawal of the case in Texas merely meant the pair had complied with the wishes of the High Court.

Having been unable to stop the sale of the Premier League club to New England Sports Ventures for 300 million pounds ($480.8 million) on Friday, Hicks and Gillett are now concentrating on winning damages.

UNFAIR ORDER

"The focus should be on the English proceedings," said Melsheimer. "We are very respectful of the English court system and we want to make sure that we follow the letter and spirit of the court's order.

"We believe that it is appropriate to go back to court in England and seek relief from what we think is an unfair and over-broad order that had been entered without the benefit of a full hearing of both sides," he added.

Melsheimer said the ruling on Thursday had taken place without legal representation from Hicks and Gillett and they wanted their view to be put to the High Court.

"We want to be present and be heard. I think the court will realise that its original order is over-broad and unfair," he said.

"The fact remains, I don't think any judge in England or anywhere has had a chance to hear both sides of the story, We know the court have no interest in being unfair," he said.

Asked whether the moves in the UK could include attempts to gain compensation as well as the overturning of Thursday's order, Melsheimer said:

"I think it's broadest possible relief. We will be consulting with English counsel. It certainly will include relief from the order that purports to restrict our legal rights outside the country".

Pakistan's suspended Butt hopes to make swift return

Sat, Oct 16 10 01:36 AM

Pakistan test captain Salman Butt has kept up his training regime in the hope of playing in next month's series against South Africa despite being suspended and under investigation for alleged spot-fixing.

"My cricket career was going well and I was also doing well, these allegations have damaged by career," Butt told reporters on Friday as he mulled over his chances of playing in the Middle East against the South Africans.

"But it has also been a big learning experience for me. It has taught me a lot about how to deal with the people around you.

"I keep on following my daily routine of two hours training and practice because I want to be prepared for a comeback.

"I am working hard and doing my bit. The conditions in Lahore and the UAE are the same so I am preparing hard on playing spin."

Butt has kept a low profile since returning from the troubled tour of England last month and is waiting for his appeal hearing against the suspension in Doha on Oct. 30 and 31.

Pace bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were also suspended by the International Cricket Council for allegedly agreeing to bowl pre-determined no balls in the fourth test against England in August.

British police are also investigating the spot-fixing allegations against the players who all deny any wrongdoing.

Molinari roars into Portugal contention with flawless 62

Sat, Oct 16 10 01:16 AM

A flawless 10-birdie round of 62 catapulted Ryder Cup Italian Francesco Molinari into Portugal Masters contention in exhilarating fashion on Friday.

Molinari had been so upset with himself after carding a two-over 74 in the first round he said he felt kicking a door.

Instead he bettered his career-best score by a stroke to come within a shot of the Oceanica Victoria course record.

His birdie blitz left him still five strokes behind the halfway leader Maarten Lafeber, but Molinari said he now felt composed enough to record his second tour victory.

"Two-over yesterday was just too bad to be true when I knew I was striking the ball so well," the Italian told reporters. "I didn't kick the door but I felt like doing it.

"The mind just wasn't ready to play golf. It was just lack of focus. The Ryder Cup was very tiring and I should have taken last week off.

"But now I have my mindset back."

A splendid day on the greens, in which he took only 25 putts, helped Molinari up the leader board.

While he soared, former U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell crumbled yet again. The 41-year-old 2005 major winner was full of optimism he could make only his second cut in 18 starts this year but a disastrous finish ended the New Zealander's chance of weekend action.

With just two holes to go Campbell was in a position to qualify for the last two rounds but double bogeys on both resulted in a five-over 77 to leave him level-par.

The cut came at a staggering four-under 140, only two worse than the all-time tour record.

Leader Lafeber, looking for a long-awaited second tour title to go with his home Dutch Open in 2003, included an eagle-two at the second on his way to a 67 to lie 13-under, a two-shot advantage over Finn Mikko Ilonen (68).

Portuguese Jose-Filipe Lima cheered his home supporters with a 64 to share third place, three off the lead, with Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin (67).

Happy Liverpool fans raise a glass to a brighter future

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 12:56 AM

Delighted Liverpool fans clinked beer glasses on Friday as they toasted the departure of the club owners they hated and cautiously welcomed the start of a new debt-free era for their club.

Celebrating the news that the takeover of the Premier League club by New England Sports Ventures (NESV) had gone through, supporters headed to pubs near Anfield to ponder a brighter future both on and off the field.

They were united in their relief over the departure of Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett, who manager Roy Hodgson said were seen by fans as "draining the club of money and dragging the club back".

"I'm pleased that Hicks and Gillett have gone, they were borrowing money and not spending. They were a pair of clowns to be honest," taxi driver Peter Griffiths, who had extra reason to celebrate his 36th birthday, told Reuters.

"The new owner has a good sporting background -- and he's not called it a 'franchise' yet," he added in reference to Gillett's faux pas when he took over three and a half years ago.

"Hopefully this will be the turning point of our season."

Against the backdrop of the bitter boardroom battles, the team has been struggling on the pitch and sits in the Premier League relegation zone with six points from seven games.

Many fans have put the poor start down to the fact the club have been unable to buy new top players because much of its money was spent on huge interest payments on a debt of more than 200 million pounds ($320.6 million).

They do not want another repeat by yet more American owners.

"As long as it's not the same as the other lot, as long as they stick to their promises," industrial cleaner Graham Teare, sinking a few pints with his friends at the bar, said.

"Hopefully they will do the job for Liverpool like they have for the Boston Red Sox."

NESV own the Major League baseball team and since their 2002 takeover, the team have won two World Series after a more than 80-year drought.

With Sunday's Merseyside derby at Everton approaching, supporters are keen to get back to what they do best -- cheering their team on at the stadium.

"Now that the takeover has gone through we can just focus on the football and concentrate on getting up the table," fireman Lee Duncalf said, while televisions showed pictures of how the day's events had unfolded.

"What Liverpool fans want is for them to steady the ship and to hold on to Fernando Torres until the end of the season.

"Hopefully they will give us more money to spend too."

Even the rain that had been pouring down in Liverpool city centre before the takeover was announced had stopped as supporters got ready for a night of partying.

"It's absolutely fantastic," said Duncalf. "When I heard it I was just over the moon. We're having a few drinks to celebrate."

Increasing membership rule could backfire on tour - Donald

Published>Sat, Oct 16 10 12:36 AM

The European Tour could come to regret continuing to raise its mandatory membership requirement, Britain's world number eight Luke Donald said on Friday.

The tour announced on Wednesday that for 2011 it will increase the amount of events players have to play to qualify for membership from 12 to 13, the second increase in two years.

Donald has had a successful year on both sides of the Atlantic, finishing third in the U.S. Tour's FedEx Cup and currently lying 15th on the European Tour's Race to Dubai (order of merit).

While the Englishman, joint top points scorer in the Ryder Cup, said he did not envisage an extra tournament being a problem personally he could see fellow Europeans playing in the United States struggling to commit to 13 events.

This is despite the world's leading players being able to chalk off eight of their mandatory events by playing four majors and four WGC events.

"Every time they add a tournament it makes it a little bit more difficult," Donald told Reuters. "It might end up backfiring on the European Tour if they try and push people to play too many European events. They might just say 'oh forget it'.

"By the end of this season I'll have played 14 counting events, but it does become difficult to spread yourself evenly between two tours - to gain any momentum on one tour or the other.

"I will again try my best to support both tours next year, 13 is possible for me, but by this increase, it becomes harder.

"I can understand that it's to try to get the world's top players to play in Europe but Europeans are as strong as they've ever been and a lot of the top guys want to play in America as well. They shouldn't be penalised.

"They want to become better players. Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, I think, are joining the PGA Tour. They want to take the opportunity of playing against the best players in the world.

"Part of the reason why Europe is so strong is that our players are playing all around the world, including America. That's the way to get better, play against the best players in the world."

Increasing the mandatory amount of events may have a Ryder Cup spin-off, too, if Europeans players, such as Paul Casey who was not selected for the Celtic Manor event, decide to dedicate themselves almost solely to the U.S. Tour, Donald said.

"If you are not careful you might run into another situation like this year - where world top 10 players are left out of the Ryder Cup," he added.

The National Basketball Association said on Friday Chinese Internet giant Sina Corp will operate the U.S. sports league's website in the China.

The NBA said its content will be available on both Sina's NBA section and the league's website at nba.com/china when the 2010-2011 season begins on Oct. 26.

NBA executives salivate at the growth prospects for China as an estimated 300 million people -- a total about equal to the U.S. population -- play basketball in China.

The NBA has supported Chinese basketball for decades, including first hosting the Chinese national team in 1985. Chinese interest spiked after 7-foot-6 Yao Ming joined the NBA in 2002.

The NBA also formed a joint venture with sports and entertainment group AEG in October 2008 to build at least a dozen "NBA-style" arenas in major Chinese cities.

TIMELINE - Liverpool ownership battle

Fri, Oct 15 10 11:36 PM

REUTERS - The battle for control of Liverpool was resolved on Friday when New England Sports Ventures, owners of Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox, completed a 300 million pound ($480.8 million) takeover of the Premier League club.

Here is a timeline of the major developments.

Feb. 2007 - U.S. sports tycoons George Gillett and Tom Hicks pledge to keep Liverpool true to tradition after agreeing to pay 218.9 million pounds ($347.5 million) to take over the Premier League soccer club.

-- Billionaire Hicks is the owner of the Texas Rangers major league baseball team and the Dallas Stars NHL franchise, while Gillett owns NHL's Montreal Canadiens.

March 2008 - Takeover talks involving Hicks and Dubai International Capital (DIC) are terminated amid disagreement over who should be running the club.

-- DIC, which made a 400 million-pound ($807.6 million) bid for Liverpool, says it is "in advanced discussions" with Liverpool's co-owners although no agreement was on price or shareholding percentage.

Sept. 2008 - DIC rules out fresh bid for Liverpool.

April 16, 2010 - Liverpool goes up for sale. Hicks and Gillett appoint Barclays Capital to find a buyer.

-- Hicks and Gillett say in a joint statement that being owners of Liverpool for the past three years had been a "rewarding and exciting" experience.

Aug. 10 - Royal Bank of Scotland is supporting the club's sale by offering financing to potential buyers, banking sources say.

-- Creditors originally asked Liverpool's owners to pay 100 million pounds ($157.5 million) of its debt of around 250 million. The two could not make the payment and the debt financing was amended and extended "at least six times" since 2008 before the club was put up for sale in April.

-- Several Middle Eastern buyers expressed interest but the owners could not agree a purchase price, the bankers say.

Oct. 5 - Hicks and Gillett seek to remove managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre from the Board.

-- A statement from Hicks and Gillett says offers "dramatically undervalue the Club" but they are committed to finding a buyer that would sustain the future of Liverpool.

Oct. 6 - Liverpool's board agrees to sell the club to the owners of baseball's Boston Red Sox. The Premier League club say they have accepted a 300 million-pound offer from New England Sports Ventures (NESV) ahead of an Oct. 15 deadline to repay over 200 million pounds worth of debt. However the deal is being complicated because they are facing a legal challenge from Hicks and Gillett.

Oct. 8 - NESV are cleared to continue their proposed takeover of Liverpool by the Premier League.

Oct. 12 - Lawyers for Hicks and Gillett admit they breached their contracts with RBS when they tried to sack board members in a final bid to keep control of the club.

-- Singapore billionaire Peter Lim makes a cash bid for the club of 320 million pounds which tops NESV. Lim says he will also make a further 40 million pounds available for manager Roy Hodgson to purchase players.

Oct. 13 - British court backs RBS and rules against Hicks and Gillett, supporting the club's board and its right to negotiate a deal.

-- NESV welcomes the High Court decision and says it has a binding agreement to buy the club.

-- Hicks and Gillett gain a temporary restraining order on the sale in a Texas court.

Oct. 14 - Lim says he is withdrawing his bid, adding that his interest in buying Liverpool could be revived if "current events cause the circumstances to change".

-- The takeover case returns to London's High Court which rules that the Texas court ruling is restrained.

-- A new hearing begins in Dallas with lawyers for Hicks and Gillett filing a motion for contempt of court which asked a judge to jail and fine club chairman Martin Broughton and other defendants. The case is adjourned until the next day.

Oct. 15 - Gillett admits defeat with a Dallas court lifting a temporary restraining order blocking the deal.

-- Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton announces completed purchase by NESV.

Liverpool change hands after 'penalty shoot-out'

Published>Fri, Oct 15 10 11:16 PM

Liverpool's long-running takeover saga ended on Friday when the owners of Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox completed their 300 million pound ($480.8 million) purchase of the Premier League club.

New England Sports Ventures said the deal, welcomed by jubilant fans but dismissed as an "epic swindle" by ousted co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks, had eliminated all of the acquisition debt placed on the club by the American pair.

In what could be a major boost for embattled manager Roy Hodgson, the new owners added that the club's debt servicing obligations had been slashed from 25 to 30 million pounds a year to two to three.

However, Liverpool still face the prospect of a protracted legal battle after lawyers for Hicks and Gillett vowed to fight on "with all of their legal energies" in a claim for damages of $1.6 billion.

We got the right result."

The day had started with a breakthrough in Texas, where a judge lifted a restraining order preventing NESV from going ahead with the deal.

It ended with new owner John W Henry declaring himself proud and humbled with his purchase, telling the fans what they wanted to hear.

"We are here to win, we have a tradition of winning," he assured reporters. "We have the second highest spending club in Major League Baseball and we will do what is necessary."

NIGHTMARE START

Liverpool, the five-times European champions who are one of England's greatest clubs with a brand of global stature, have had a nightmare start to the season and are currently 18th in the 20-strong league with just six points from seven matches.

Speaking before the deal was confirmed, Hodgson said a cloud had been lifted.

"It's a very good day for the club," he told a packed news conference at the club's training ground. "It's a relief ... it's been a very difficult couple of weeks ... We've had to live through that bad time."

Friday's outcome, desired by so many fans, will be a relief ahead of Sunday's local derby with Everton, a hugely important game given the club's precarious league position.

The amount the former co-owners have vowed to pursue in damages was scoffed at by some commentators.

"They're hoping for a settlement," said Robert Boland, professor of sports management at New York University.

"You never sue for a little. Every bumper tap in New York City is worth $2 million in damages. You always put the biggest number you possibly could imagine for damages on the lawsuit to start."

A statement also said that the pair had offered to pay outstanding debt to the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) but that attempt was rejected. A spokesman for the bank was not immediately available for comment.

"This outcome not only devalues the club but it also will result in long-term uncertainty for the fans, players and everyone who loves this sport because all legal recourses will be pursued," said their Texas lawyer Steve Stodghill in a statement.

Putin's man Sobyanin named next Moscow mayor

Published>Fri, Oct 15 10 10:36 PM

Sergei Sobyanin, chief of staff to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, was picked by President Dmitry Medvedev to run Moscow after the dismissal of longtime mayor Yuri Luzhkov.

Sobyanin has been Putin's top aide since 2005, and his appointment will further strengthen the prime minister's grip on power in the run-up to a 2012 presidential election in which he has hinted he may return to the Kremlin.

The appointment now needs to be rubber-stamped by Moscow's city council.

Medvedev sacked Luzhkov after an 18-year stint that saw the transformation of Moscow from a bleak post-Soviet capital into a bustling international city which accounted for a quarter of the Russian economy in 2009.

Sobyanin, 52, has the experience of running a major Russian region comparable in size and influence with Moscow.

WELL CONNECTED

Sobyanin was born in 1958 in the ethnic Mansi village of Nyaksimvol in Siberia's resource-rich Khanti-Mansiisk autonomous district, named after two traditionally reindeer-herding ethnic groups that have long lived there. His father was the village head and his mother an accountant.

Sobyanin worked at the Chelyabinsk pipe factory before starting a political career. He rose through administrative ranks in the oil and gas town of Kogalym where he worked with future oil major LUKOIL CEO Vagit Alekperov.

In 2001 Sobyanin was elected governor of the Tyumen region, Russia's third-largest, which includes Khanti-Mansiisk. Tyumen's economy is the second-largest among Russia's 83 adminstrative regions, after Moscow.

Through his work in Russia's richest oil province Sobyanin became well connected with oil barons, including Vladimir Bogdanov, CEO of Surgutneftegaz, and billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Unlike Luzhkov and some other regional bosses who never fully accepted Putin's 2004 decision to abolish direct regional election, Sobyanin was quick to seek -- and secure -- Putin's approval to stay on in his job.

Sobyanin moved to Moscow as Putin's Kremlin chief of staff in 2005, replacing Medvedev, who joined the government as a deputy prime minister before being officially anointed by Putin as his successor.

In 2008 Sobyanin ran Medvedev's election campaign and political analysts say this was a key to ensuring Medvedev's convincing victory and a smooth transition of the presidency from Putin to Medvedev.

Sobyanin migrated to the cabinet after Putin became prime minister the day after Medvedev's inauguration in May 2008.

Sobyanin is an avid cross-country skier who says he had learned to ski before starting to walk. He is married with two daughters.

No need to press panic button: Nielsen

Fri, Oct 15 10 09:56 PM

Melbourne, Oct 16 (PTI) Australian coach Tim Nielsen has urged the supporters not to "jump to conclusions" following Australia''s third successive Test loss, and believes they will prove the doubters wrong during the Ashes. There has been little sympathy for the side following the 2-0 series loss to India and the previous defeat to Pakistan, the first time since 1988 the team has lost three Tests in a row, but Nielsen fired back. "The most important thing is not to jump to conclusions. A lot of stuff that''s been talked about at the moment is being led by public opinion from outside the group, and a lot of the time public opinion is a long way from the action," Nielsen told the Sydney Morning Herald. "They don''t necessarily have an insight into how hard the players are working, and how passionate they are about playing for Australia. "We know we can do better, we''re just looking to the Ashes series as an opportunity to show the Australian public that the hard work we''ve put in over the last 12 months is going to reap rewards for us. There''s no doubt about that." Nielsen said while England would see potential opportunities to target Nathan Hauritz and their middle order, Australia had plans of their own, especially for under-pressure batsman Kevin Pietersen. "It would certainly be nice for us to have some individual wins in the Ashes series. We''d like to think we can keep Pietersen at bay, break the opening partnerships early, and won''t let them take early wickets. A lot more goes into it than just talking about it. "If we can have success over Pietersen that would certainly go a way towards opening up their middle order for us." One of the major concerns for Australia during the Ashes will be the form of spinner Hauritz, who was monstered by India''s batsmen. "Hauritz had a difficult tour because they identified him as somebody they could really attack, and they are such good players of spin that it put real pressure on him. He realised that if he was just a little bit out with his line or length, he was going to be punished," Nielsen said. "He worked hard at bowling with a couple of different fields. He changes things around, but in the end they just had the better of him as far as the statistical analysis of the game was concerned. Haury''s had some really good success for us for the last 12 to 18 months. .

Handing over Games stadia to firms: group questions efficacy

Fri, Oct 15 10 09:52 PM

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI) Expressing concern over plans to hand over the newly-renovated games stadia to private firms, a research group today questioned the efficacy of the move and said this privatisation would make the facilities inaccessible to the country''s athletes. In its post-Commonwealth Games report analysing the benefits and losses of the Games, the Hazards Centre said the ''world class'' stadia would now be used by the government to recover the massive expenses incurred for the sporting event and would hardly serve the purpose of benefiting athletes. "The Centre has already finalised a plan to offer them on a 10-year agreement to private companies. These companies will need a minimum of Rs 1,000 crore as their net worth to bid for just Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Indira Gandhi Sports Complex. For the National Stadium, Swimming Pool Complex, and Shooting Range, the net worth for bidding would be Rs 500 crore," it said. The company that wins the bid will be allowed branding rights over the stadia, permission to sub-let built up space, use the venue for concerts and running academies, among other things, ensuring that the stadia will remain out of bounds of athletes. "Is this how sports going to be promoted in the nation," it asked. It also highlighted the fact that the projects that were touted as beneficial for the citizens of the country were now set to benefit only a selected elite. "Our analyses of all big cities that have hosted such events in the past shows that they are mired in debts for years after the event is over. The same is expected to happen to Delhi and we expect at least two generations will pass until the debt is repaid," said Dunu Roy, director of the support and resource centre.

Enforcement Directorate issues 'Look Out Circular' against Lalit Modi

Published>Fri, Oct 15 10 07:56 PM

New Delhi, Oct 15 (ANI): The Enforcement Directorate has issued a 'Look Out Circular' against sacked Indian Premier League (IPL) Commissioner Lalit Modi at all entry points and airports in the country in connection with its probe into the alleged misappropriation of funds in the T20 cricket tournament.

The circular has been sent to entry points and airports in the country along with the photographs of 46-year-old Modi.

The circular empowers the police and other enforcement agencies to detain the individual at these check points and immediately inform about the detention to the issuing agency.

It has been reported that the Enforcement Directorate has also initiated the process of revoking Modi's passport and is examining the FIR filed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) against him for alleged misappropriation of funds.

The Enforcement Directorate had recently issued an international 'Blue Notice Alert' for Lalit Modi's detention for alleged 'serious contraventions' of the foreign exchange law after its investigation.

The notice issued by the Enforcement Directorate earlier this month has asked law enforcement agencies across the globe that Modi 'should be detained as and when noticed' and the agency be 'informed immediately'.

The issued notice bears Modi's photograph and passport number besides other details.

BCCI Secretary N. Srinivasan had earlier on Wednesday filed a police complaint against Modi on charges of misappropriation of funds.

The BCCI had given a show-cause notice to Modi in May this year, charging him with financial irregularities in the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament.

Modi was accused of committing a wide range of corruption allegations, including bribery and tax evasion, resulting in his suspension from the post of IPL Commissioner in April. (ANI)

Australia will pay for damages at Games Village

Published>Fri, Oct 15 10 07:46 PM

Sydney/New Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS) The Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA) has regretted one of its athlete's indecent behaviour a few days back and has agreed to pay for the damage caused at the Games Village in a rowdy incident after Games closure, Lalit Bhanot, Commonwealth Games Organising Committee secretary general, said Friday.

In a statement Bhanot said: 'The media reports regarding Australian celebrations at the Athletes' Village and the resultant damage to a washing machine are true. The person in charge of Tower 21 brought it to the notice of the Village authorities. The issue was taken up with the ACGA, who regretted the incident and agreed to pay for the damage as per guidelines.'

After the closing ceremony Thursday night, unidentified athletes dropped a washing machine from a balcony in the Australian section of the Games Village. Meanwhile, the athlete, whose identity has been withheld, was sent back home for bad behaviour some days back.

Delhi Police said no case has been filed in the incident as they have not received any official complaint from the organising committee.

The Australian high commission in a press release Friday morning termed as 'sloppy journalism to a new low' the media report that 'enraged by the humiliating loss, some athletes went berserk, destroying electrical fittings and furniture on Tuesday and Wednesday'.

According to the report which quoted Delhi Police sources, the irate athletes also shouted slogans against batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who played a pivotal role in ensuring India's victory in the Bangalore Test match.

Terming the report 'factually wrong, insulting to Australia's athletes and can only be described as a fantasy', the high commission release said: 'It badly lets down a quality newspaper'.

The release, however, admitted: 'There were indeed some spirited celebrations involving the Australian team and a number of other teams at the Athletes' Village.'

'We can confirm that in the course of those celebrations, a washing machine was damaged, though it remains unclear who did the damage, what their nationality was, and whether it was deliberate or accidental,' the Australian high commission said.

No one was injured in Thursday's incident, Perry Crosswhite, chief executive of the Australia Commonwealth Games Association, said in remarks published Friday.

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him as saying he was disappointed by the incident Thursday night after the Commonwealth Games concluded with a sparkling closing ceremony in the heart of the Indian capital.

'We don't know who did that,' Crosswhite told journalists. 'Delhi Police came around and they've done an investigation.'

He also revealed that one athlete was sent home a few days ago for bad behaviour but he did not reveal the person's identity. 'At the end of the Games, these things happen,' Crosswhite said.

Australia ended on top of the medals tally in the Oct 3-14 Games.

Heavy rains lash Kochi causing concern about first ODI''s fate

Fri, Oct 15 10 02:37 PM

Kochi, Oct 15 (PTI) Heavy rain in Kochi since last night has raised concerns about the fate of the first one-dayer between India and Australia here on October 17. The practice sessions of both the teams have been cancelled due to the rains, Kerala Cricket Association sources said. The Australian team was to practise this morning and the Indian team in the afternoon, but due to the rains both the practise sessions have been cancelled, the sources said. "The ground condition is very bad. There is lot of water in the ground," the sources told PTI. "However, if the rains clear by this afternoon and there is sunshine, we will try our best to clear the water," the sources said. Though the ground has been covered with the plastic covers brought from Chennai, there is seepage into the ground due to the heavy rains, the sources said. The Indian and Australian team members had reached here yesterday after the second Test in Bangalore, which India won. India had also won the first test at Mohali. According to the Met department, the weather today and tomorrow will be cloudy with one or two showers. It is likely to clear by Sunday.

'Shocked' Watson 'sad' over Rajasthan Royals termination from IPL

Published>Fri, Oct 15 10 02:23 PM

Sydney, Oct 15 (ANI): Australian all rounder Shane Watson, who was planning a long and lucrative future with Rajasthan Royals, had no idea that the IPL team was in trouble after its contract was terminated by the Indian board.

Watson got the shocking news from his former Australian teammate Adam Gilchrist who informed him during the second Test against India in Bangalore.

"When Rajasthan got booted out it was actually during the game, Adam Gilchrist passed on the information, and I didn't know until then," said Watson.

"I actually had meetings with the CEO of Rajasthan a day or two before the Test match, he was very positive that they had covered everything the BCCI had asked of them in regards to the ownership side of things and it was all okay," he said.

"Even on the day I read in the paper that it was looking like Rajasthan were going to be in the clear, obviously that wasn't the case," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Watson, as saying.

"It's very sad, because being a part of something, being able to build a brand over the first three years was one of the most special moments of my career. For that to be taken away because of legalities is very sad," he added.

Watson will now be looking for a new IPL team if Rajasthan Royals fails to get itself reinstated through a courts order. (ANI)

Third Nigerian fails dope test in CWG

Fri, Oct 15 10 02:17 PM

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI) Doping continued to dog the Commonwealth Games as Nigerian runner Folashade Abugan was today stripped off her women''s 400m and 4x400m relay silver medals in the just-concluded event after testing positive for a banned anabolic steroid. With this, the number of dope-tainted athletes in the Games has gone up to four with three of them being Nigerian. "Nigerian runner Folashade Abugan, returned an adverse analytical finding from a test conducted on October 8, 2010, after competing in the women''s 400 metre final," the Commonwealth Games Federation said in a statement. "Ms Abugan''s ''A'' sample was found to demonstrate findings consistent with an exogenous origin of endogenous steroids. The delta values indicate an application of testosterone prohormone, which is prohibited under the current WADA Prohibited List S1 Anabolic Agents," the statement read. Abugan admitted her guilt after refusing to have her B sample tested. "Ms Abugan wrote to the CGF waiving her rights to have her ''B'' sample analysed and a hearing, as provided for within the CGF Anti-Doping Standard (ADS). She also admitted liability," the CGF statement said. The Federation Court concluded that Abugan had committed an anti-doping rule violation and disqualified here from all events she participated in during the Games, with the results nullified. "This includes her silver medal in the women''s 400 metres. As she was also a member of her country''s second placed 4x400 metre relay team, that result is also nullified," the CGF said. The silver medal for the woman''s 400 metres will now be awarded to Aliann Tabitha Pompey of Guyana, with the bronze medal going to Christine Amertil of the Bahamas. Her disqualification from the women''s 4x400 metre relay, Nigeria''s silver medal will now be awarded to England and the bronze medal to Canada. The England relay team comprised Kelly Massey, Victoria Barr, Meghan Beesley and Nadine Okyere. The members of the Canadian relay team were Amonn Nelson, Adrienne Power, Vicki Tolton and Carline Muir. "In accordance with the CGF Anti-Doping Standards the documents pertaining to Ms Abugan have now been referred to the IAAF and WADA for whatever additional action they consider appropriate," the CGF said. Earlier Nigeria''s Osayomi Oludamola was stripped of her gold medal in the 100 meters after testing positive for methylhexanamine, a banned stimulant. Nigerian hurdler Samuel Okon, who did not win a medal, had also tested positive for a banned substance. Indian race walker Rani Yadav was the other athlete to return a positive dope result. She tested positive for banned steroid nandrolone after finishing sixth in the 20-kilometer walk of the Games which concluded yesterday.

Blewett expects huge summer from Ponting as captain

Published>Fri, Oct 15 10 01:51 PM

Sydney, Oct 15(ANI): Former Australian batsman Greg Blewett has backed Ricky Ponting as captain for next month's Ashes despite Australia losing three Tests in a row and slumping to fifth in the world rankings for the first time in their history.

Blewett acknowledges that Australia will be "down on confidence" following their 2-0 defeat against India, but insists that sticking with the tried and tested is the only way to topple England.

"India is a pretty tough place to captain and I didn't see any real glaring errors from Ricky. I read Warnie's Twitter thing, in which he questioned some of the field placements. But I agreed with what Ricky said - these days, not too many bowlers bowl to fields that they don't want," Fox Sports quoted Blewett, as saying.

"I always thought a young, inexperienced team playing in India was going to struggle against the No.1-ranked Test team. We nearly won the first Test - and we should have."

"Unfortunately at times during both Tests, after getting in good positions, they let things slip. But I really don't have any problem with his captaincy - I am expecting a huge summer from the Australia captain," he added.

When asked if 'out of form' off-spinner Nathan Hauritz should be dropped for the series, Blewett said: "To be fair, the Indians play offies as good as anyone in the world so I think he was always up against it. Some of best spinners have gone to India and they were all averaging 40 plus - so it's not just Haurie."

"My biggest concern was with the way he was bowling, I just don't think he bowled well enough coming back from an injury. Last year he showed he was good enough. For this series I'd still have Hauritz in my XI for every Test after Brisbane," he added.

Hauritz had a bowling average of 65 and an economy rate of 4.33 in the two Tests in India. (ANI)
