Antic sacked as Serbia coach, replaced by Petrovic

Wed, Sep 15 10 09:46 PM

Serbia coach Radomir Antic was sacked on Wednesday and replaced by former Yugoslavia midfielder Vladimir Petrovic, the Serbian Football Association (FSS) said.

"We made a unanimous decision to terminate the contract with Antic. We gave him a second chance after the World Cup fiasco but we got ourselves into a predicament and we really had no choice," FSS president Tomislav Karadzic told a news conference.

Antic had blamed the referee for Serbia's 2-1 World Cup Group D defeat by Australia which cost his team a berth in the second round of the tournament in South Africa.

"Antic turned out to be a good short-term solution but left a lot to be desired in the long run. Petrovic will sign until the end of 2011 and his contract will be automatically extended if we qualify for Euro 2012," Karadzic said.

The 55-year-old Petrovic, who played for English club Arsenal in the 1982-83 season and made 34 appearances for the former Yugoslavia, steered Serbia and Montenegro to the final of the 2004 European Under-21 championship in Germany.

Serbia host Estonia on Oct. 8 and visit Group C leaders Italy four days later in their next two Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Djokovic predicts Nadal to be world's best ever tennis star

Published>Wed, Sep 15 10 01:38 PM

London, Sep 15 (ANI): US Open finalist and Serb tennis star Novak Djokovic has predicted that World Number One Rafael Nadal will become the greatest player of all time.

The Spanish maestro has become the seventh player to win all four Grand Slams with his 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-2 win over the Serb in New York on Monday.

Nadal, 24, is the third youngest to achieve the feat behind Rod Laver and Don Budge, and has now won nine Slams compared to Roger Federer's record of 16.

"Nadal has the capabilities already to become the best player ever. I think he's playing the best tennis I have ever seen him play on hard courts. He has improved his serve drastically. The speed, the accuracy, and of course his baseline is as good as ever so he's a very complete player," The Sun quoted Djokovic, as saying.

"At this point there is five, six years' difference between them and basically Federer has had more years on the tour, he has had more success - he has more trophies. He's definitely somebody who made history in this sport. And he's still playing as one of the best players in the world," added Djokovic, who beat Federer in the semis. (ANI)

Nadal sees Federer more as a role model than an enemy

Published>Wed, Sep 15 10 01:02 PM

New York, Sept.15 (ANI): First time U.S. Open champion Rafael Nadal believes the key to him winning nine Grand Slam titles in a little over five years has been his powerhouse shots.

Asked what does he think when he is playing against his rivals, including Federer, ABC News quotes Nadal as saying: "Nothing! Try to put the ball inside. The important thing is the shots. It's easier to be a great champion with a lot of shots and nothing of head than a lot of head and nothing of shots."

He says that while he would love to triumph over his chief rival Roger Federer very time they meet on court, he sees Federer more as a role model than an enemy.

"I think to have Roger there was always a reference to improve, and a big motivation to be a better player because you always see a better player than you there," the 24-year-old Spaniard said of Federer, 27, of Switzerland.

Nadal still thinks Federer is a better player and the man to beat.

"I am not still thinking. I am sure," he said.

Nadal and Federer are the only pair of men to have ever finished five consecutive calendar years as the top two ranked players. (ANI)

Mumbai suffer second loss

Published>Wed, Sep 15 10 12:42 PM

Aided by an opening partnership of 112 between Michael Klinger and Daniel Harris and some woeful fielding from the opposition, the South Australia Redbacks beat the Mumbai Indians by five wickets in the Champions League.

Harris and Klinger overcame a slow start to set a good pace to their run chase, Harris hit three sixes in his 56 runs off 37 balls while Klinger scored a more sedate 50 off 48 balls although he too had three sixes to his name.

Earlier Saurabh Tiwary smashed a whirlwind 44 as Mumbai Indians recovered from a shaky start to post a challenging 181 for seven. Tiwary smashed one four and four sixes and added 32 runs off 28 balls with Ambati Rayudu (38) and starred in a 58-run fifth wicket stand with Kieron Pollard (36) to resurrect the MI innings. Inter draws opener, Barcelona routs Panathinaikos

Published>Wed, Sep 15 10 12:32 PM

Inter Milan opened the defense of its Champions League title with a 2-2 draw at tournament newcomer FC Twente on Tuesday while Barcelona signaled its intent with a 5-1 home thrashing of Panathinaikos.

Inter went ahead in the Netherlands through Wesley Sneijder but needed a 41st-minute goal by striker Samuel Eto'o to earn a point from the Group A opener.

Lionel Messi scored twice and missed a penalty as Barcelona, which lost to Inter in the semifinals last season, started group play with a convincing victory at the Camp Nou. David Villa, Pedro Rodriguez and Daniel Alves also scored for the Spanish champions.

In Group C, Manchester United was held to a goalless draw at home to Rangers in a match marred by a serious ankle injury to United winger Antonio Valencia, and Valencia thrashed newcomer Bursaspor 4-0 away.

Sneijder, who starred for the Netherlands at the World Cup, tapped in a rebound to open the scoring after Twente goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov failed to hold on to Diego Milito's shot.

Theo Janssen equalized for Twente with a curling free kick in the 30th before Milito's own goal put the Dutch side ahead 10 minutes later.

Eto'o, who scored the winner against Udinese at the weekend, found the target again with a low 25-yard drive to rescue Inter, which is struggling for form in the early part of the campaign after winning an unprecedented treble - Champions League, Serie A and Italian Cup - last season.

"A draw against Inter is a good result for us," said Twente coach Michel Preud'homme. "We could have won the match."

In the other match in the pool, Werder Bremen recovered from going two goals down to draw 2-2 with Tottenham, which was making its debut in the tournament.

A Petri Pasanen own goal and a header by Peter Crouch gave Spurs a great start but goals by Hugo Almeida and Marko Marin brought Werder level.

Barcelona bounced back from a humiliating 2-0 home defeat to Hercules in the Spanish league by routing Panathinaikos, which took the lead through Sidney Govou in the 20th minute.

Argentina forward Messi took his tally for the season to six goals in five games by first equalizing with a well-taken finish and then adding a third after offseason signing Villa had made it 2-1.

Panathinaikos goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas denied Messi a hat trick with a penalty save in the 54th minute but Pedro and Alves piled on the agony for the visitors from Greece.

"Things worked out well and it's always nice to start the Champions League with a victory," Pedro said. "We knew we had to win."

Dame N'Doye's late winner handed FC Copenhagen a 1-0 victory against Rubin Kazan in the other Group D match.

United manager Alex Ferguson is likely to be without Valencia for a lengthy period after saying the Ecuador winger sustained what could be "a dislocation and a fracture" in an innocuous

second-half challenge in the draw with Rangers.

"He seemed to dig his toe in the turf. Unfortunately, it's a bad one," Ferguson said.

An almost second-string United, featuring recalled England striker Wayne Rooney and nine other players who did not start against Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, failed to break down a stubborn Rangers defense at Old Trafford.

United midfielder Darron Gibson came closest to breaking the deadlock with a raft of long-range efforts.

Bursaspor, one of two other teams playing in the Champions League for the first time, was handed a tough introduction to life in Europe's elite club competition.

Tino Costa opened the scoring for Valencia in the 16th minute with a 35-yard shot and striker Aduriz dived to head in the second. Pablo Hernandez and Roberto Soldado added more goals in the second half for the Spanish team.

In Group B, Brazil international Michel Bastos scored an opportunist 21st-minute lob as last season's semifinalist Lyon won 1-0 against 10-man Schalke.

Schalke center half Benedikt Hoewedes was sent off 13 minutes later for a high tackle on Lyon forward Jimmy Briand. In the other group match, goals from Luisao and Oscar Cardozo gave Benfica a 2-0 win over debutant Hapoel Tel Aviv.
