And the World Cup winner is...

Published>Fri, Jun 11 10 12:23 PM

Quit stressing over the winner of the FIFA World Cup!

A Zulu sangoma, after a night of dreams and consultations with the ancestors, looks into the future to see the winner of the 2010 World Cup.

The 70-year-old fortune teller, a cheerful lady called Constance, plays a critical role in Zulu culture, blessed with special powers to heal and divine the future.

But she was mighty hard to find.

A two-day search aided by street sellers and shop owners in the southern city of Port Elizabeth had produced nothing but a series of false dawns.

It appeared one needed a sangoma to find a sangoma.

Then a toothless lady of indeterminate age kneading dough on a pavement beside a taxi rank suggested trying a muthi herbal specialist off Govan Mbeki Road.

The shop, an Aladdin's cave of pills and potions and ointments, had a high counter behind which were two people.

One, a man, had his face painted in tribal warpaint.

The other, a woman, was Constance.

"You've made it," she smiled, as if she had been expecting the visit all the time.

After negotiating her fee, Constance opened a door into a storeroom packed with sacks of dried roots and animal hides hanging from a makeshift washing line.

Through a curtain at the back was her "office" -- with a frayed floral couch, more bags of herbs and plant extracts, and shelves crammed with somewhat incongruous tins of Jeyes Fluid household cleaner.

"I use all this to make my medicines," she said, easing her generous frame into a chair beside, which was a small table with incense and a yellow candle.

"When someone comes to me and wants me to help them with trouble in their life or look into the future, I get them to light this candle. That way I can see through them, I can see what the problem is," she explained.

"I help cure people who are mad or who have AIDS using 'muthi'."

Constance has been a sangoma for 12 years.

"My father and my sister were sangomas, and when they died they came to me in a dream and told me 'you have to be a sangoma now'," she said.

"I didn't want to, but they made me ill. They hit me with sticks, I couldn't walk.

"They sent me into the sea for seven days to sleep. When I woke up I accepted to become a sangoma.

"I went away to train for one year. Then my ancestors came back to me and said 'you can finish the training now, you are a sangoma'.

"I then slaughtered five goats and one cow."

She says she has many clients, rich and poor, black and white, old and young, who turn to her for a multitude of reasons.

"People come to me because they have problems sleeping, or with their marriage, they want to know the future, or they are ill. I help them all."

Football players also turn to herbalists for potions, balms or talismans to boost their performance or treat injuries.

More than 30 percent of African athletes use traditional medicines, according to one survey.

Johannesburg's Ellis Park stadium is a hop from major medicine markets, and an ox was slaughtered at the showpiece Soccer City site to bless the 10 World Cup pitches.

Asked about the World Cup, Constance shuts her eyes, as if asleep, in meditation, then opens them sharply.

"All the teams here are strong, but I have to consult my ancestors, I have to ask them what they think, and they will tell me in my dream tonight.

"Come back tomorrow, and I will have your answer." The next day, Constance is again waiting behind the counter, with the answer not to eternity but almost as important.

"Argentina will win the World Cup."

Mandela still undecided about attending opening game

Published Fri, Jun 11 10 12:09 PM

Johannesburg, June 10 -- South Africa's former president Nelson Mandela will decide on the day if he will attend Friday's World Cup opening match between South Africa and Mexico in Soccer City. President Jacob Zuma has issued an open invitation to the frail 91-year-old national icon, who has restricted his public appearances in recent years. "The former president has an open invitation to attend. He wants to attend, it depends on his feeling that day," Rich Mkhondo, communications officer of the World Cup local organising committee said Thursday at a press conference in Soccer City. "We all hope that he will be there." There has been months of uncertainty over whether the elderly statesman, who played a central role in South Africa's bid to become the tournament's first African host, will attend the kick-off. Mandela lived in Soweto before being jailed for 27 years between 1963 and 1990 for resisting white supremacist rule. Four years after his release, he was elected president in the country's first democratic national elections. President Zuma has also issued invites to the heads of states of all members of the African Union. "We hope that the majority of them will attend," said Mkhondo.

All eyes on the ball

Published>Fri, Jun 11 10 11:27 AM

Johannesburg, June 11 -- Ke Nako. In Sotho, one of the 11 recognised South African languages, this means 'It is time.' The biggest sporting extravaganza - the month-long football World Cup - starts in South Africa on Friday. It'll be a first for Africa, a continent the Olympics have feared to tread. And with close to half a million visitors expected for the games, this will be the biggest, noisiest and most colourful party South Africa's ever hosted - even by the rainbow nation's own standards. Will this be a winter of discontent for Diego Maradona or will he join Franz Beckenbauer and Mario Zagallo in an elite club, that of World Cup winners as captain and coach? Or will Dunga do that?On the streets, people are blowing their vuvuzelas - plastic horns now symbolic of the World Cup. Flags are being sold, spit and polish being applied to Soccer City, where the hosts meet Mexico in Friday's opener. Nelson Mandela will be in attendance, his grandson Mandla said, unless it's too cold. For the next four weeks, South Africa will hope the world talks about Messi, Kaka and Ronaldo rather than crime, unemployment and AIDS. Messages welcoming visitors alternate with warnings to beware of illegal activity and requests to help the vulnerable on FM radio stations. Will this be a winter of discontent for Diego Maradona or will he join Franz Beckenbauer and Mario Zagallo in an elite club, that of World Cup winners as captain and coach? Or will Dunga do that? Will England end 44 years of "hurt" under an Italian coach? Will Fabio Cannavaro be the first captain to lift the gold statuette that travels in a Luis Vuitton case twice in succession? Will an African team go beyond the quarter-finals? The answers will come gradually from 10 venues and 64 matches. By July 11, we will have them all. South Africa has invested 33 billion rand (about Rs. 20,000 crore) in World Cup-related infrastructure, according to the local media. In what should be familiar to Delhiites, albeit on a far bigger scale, new stadia have been built, old ones refurbished and the transport system that includes a high-speed train and a new bus system upgraded for 19 billion rand (about Rs. 11,500 crore). According to FIFA, the world's apex football body, the World Cup will add 55.7 billion rand (about Rs 33,800 crore) to South Africa's economy between 2006 and 2010. "It will be a uniting factor for the nation," said Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla, who is also the chief of the Mvezo village where the anti-apartheid guru was born. "South Africa will benefit but the effects of this World Cup will be felt by all of Africa," said Patrick Vieira, a World Cup and European championship winner with France, on Thursday morning. For South Africa, therefore, this isn't just about football. They are sure they won't come up short and will be gracious hosts. Even India - where, for three years and 11 months in between each World Cup finals, cricket is an intense, all-consuming religion - will get into football mode for the next four weeks. Like 172 other countries who didn't qualify, we will, as a former England coach said in a different context, "sit back with a beer and enjoy".

'Disappointed at being dropped, but I will live with it'

Published>Fri, Jun 11 10 11:17 AM

Johannesburg, June 11 -- Till you notice the 'M' on the left side of his blue tee, Patrick Vieira looks like he's part of the France squad. Having just signed a year's contract with big-spending English club Manchester City, the former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder, who turns 34 in 13 days, didn't hide his disappointment at being left out of the 2010 World Cup and coach Raymond Domenech's plans, but said life goes on. At a programme organised by McDonald's on Thursday morning, Vieira played the good host, obliging journalists with interviews. Excerpts. On June 23, 2006, your birthday, you had led France to victory in a must-win match against Togo. It kick-started France's World Cup campaign in Germany. How will you spend your birthday this time? (Smiles). No birthday plans yet though what I do know is that I will be here in South Africa for sure. Maybe, friends will plan something. Were you surprised at being left out? Let's say I was disappointed. I wanted to be part of the France team. But then, in life you don't always achieve your targets. That's how it is. Also, you have to accept the manager's decision. Having played 107 times for France, I know all about that. I will have to live with it. Won't France miss the leadership qualities of Vieira and Zinedine Zidane? There is nothing new about players coming and going. Look at the France team now:

there is (Thierry) Henry, (Franck) Ribery, (Eric) Abidal, (William) Gallas from the 2006 campaign in Germany. There is also (Florent) Malouda and Nicolas Anelka. So, you have some quality in the French team. How do you rate France's chances at this year's tournament? They have strong players and are a strong side. We now need to believe that we will do well. The first game's important but I think France will be ready. And who are your favourites for the title? Spain. They are really strong going forward. Over the last few years, they are the best team around.

Is he? Didn't know that.

Argentina say squad fit after Messi scare

Published>Fri, Jun 11 10 11:07 AM

Lionel Messi's hopes of being crowned the best player at the World Cup could be dashed by exhaustion although the Argentina team said on Thursday all 23 squad members were fit.

"(Messi) has arrived at the World Cup tired, the damage is already done and it's irreversible," Argentina's fitness coach Fernando Signorini had said in an interview with the Catalan magazine Sport.

However, team doctor Donato Villani told a news conference later that all of coach Diego Maradona's squad including Messi were fit for selection for Saturday's Group B opener against Nigeria.

"The 23 players are in optimum condition," Villani said in a brief statement to a packed media room after the team's laet afternoon practice.

Signorini, Diego Maradona's personal fitness coach during his playing career in Europe, said too much was being expected of the young forward who only turns 23 in two weeks.

"(The organisers) worry about the doping controls but not if players play 70 matches a year," he said this week after an early morning visit by anti-doping testers to Argentina's University of Pretoria camp.

Fans and media have seen little of the little Barcelona ace in the last four weeks although he has been involved in Argentina's practices during the two weeks the squad have been in South Africa.

Having missed Argentina's 5-0 win over Canada in their last warm-up 17 days ago due to a minor knee injury, Messi's last match was in La Liga on May 16. He last played for Argentina against Germany in Munich on March 3.

MIRACLE MAN

Signorini said Messi was doing no more than absolutely necessary in terms of fitness in the build-up to Argentina's opening Group B match against Nigeria in Johannesburg on Saturday.

He went on to say "Messi is almost a miracle of genetics because in a single movement he makes six or seven (movements).

"It's his calling to be one of the best (players) in history and surely at the next World Cup he'll be better than in this because to his talent he will add experience."

Daniel Arcucci, co-writer of Maradona's autobigraphy "Yo, el Diego" (I, Diego), echoed this sentiment when he said: "(Messi) has the qualities to be the best ... but it could be in 2014 and not now.

"It would be an injustice to judge him badly if he doesn't crown himself this year," he told Reuters.

Messi is excited about the tournament, saying: "To win the World Cup would not compare with anything.

"I think I'm in the best form of my career. And it's also the best of the squad in general.

"We felt we needed to be together and now what's left is to win the World Cup, which is Argentina's obligation," he told reporters.

Messi asked, however, not to be singled out, saying: "No one wins alone and I'm not going to win a World Cup alone.

"I don't even do things alone at Barcelona. Here it's the same, we have to make the most of the very great players we have."

NBA - Celtics dominate Lakers on boards to tie series

Boston Celtics guard Nate Robinson jumps on the back of Boston Celtics forward Glen Davis...

Published>Fri, Jun 11 10 10:47 AM

Reserve forward Glen Davis helped the Boston Celtics reclaim their inside presence and beat the Los Angeles Lakers 96-89 on Thursday to level the best-of-seven NBA finals at 2-2.

The burly Davis, nicknamed "Big Baby", scored 18 points on seven of 10 shooting to spark Boston's resurgent game under the basket.

Davis scored five points and Ray Allen four during a key 9-0 run in the final period as the Celtics turned a two-point deficit into a 71-64 lead with eight minutes remaining.

Kobe Bryant scored 33 points and Pau Gasol added 21 to lead the defending champion Lakers, who were out-rebounded 41-34 and outscored in the paint 54-34 on the night.

Bryant hit 10 of 22 shots, including six of 11 from beyond the arc, but failed to rally his team mates. Forward Lamar Odom had 10 points, one of only three Lakers in double figures.

Faced with the prospect of going down 3-1, Boston out-hustled the Lakers, holding a 15-2 edge on fastbreak points and a 20-10 advantage on second-chance points.

Celtics forward Paul Pierce broke out of his scoring slump with a team-leading 19 points although he had only nine after the first period.

Game Five will be Sunday at the Boston Garden before the series shifts to Los Angeles for Game Six and, if necessary, Game Seven.

Bolt back in full training next week - agent

Usain Bolt of Jamaica reacts as he prepares for the men's 300m race at the...

Published>Fri, Jun 11 10 09:07 AM

Jamaican triple Olympic and world champion Usain Bolt will return to full training on Monday after two weeks away from the track because of a sore Achilles tendon, according to his agent.

"He has been training but not on the track," Ricky Simms told Reuters on Thursday.

Last month, a Munich doctor suggested the 100 and 200 metres world record holder rest for two to three weeks as a precautionary move after Bolt's left Achilles became inflamed.

To stay in shape, the lanky Jamaican had been working in the pool and gym and doing other exercises while resting his Achilles tendon, Simms added.

Bolt withdrew from Saturday's New York Diamond League meeting because of the problem, but would attend the event to watch club mate Yohan Blake run in the 100 metres, Simms and Blake said.

The world's fastest man declined to be interviewed after arriving in New York on Thursday.

His next scheduled race is a 200 metres at Lausanne on July 8 and he also had Diamond League meetings scheduled in Paris (100 metres), Zurich (200), Brussels (100) and one yet-to-be announced competition, Simms said.

"It will be a 100 metres race and I believe Tyson (Gay) and Asafa (Powell) will probably also run the race," Simms said.

The world's three fastest men previously were announced as all running in Brussels.

Gay also will compete in 100 metres races in Stockholm and London with Powell joining him in Stockholm and one other meeting.

Group F - Italians already being written off

Italy soccer coach Marcello Lippi attends a news conference before the team's training session in...

Published>Fri, Jun 11 10 08:27 AM

Never write off the Italians is a World Cup cliche many pundits have ignored this time around such is the lack of buzz around the defending champions.

Marcello Lippi's team are being dismissed as past their sell-by date and 36-year-old captain Fabio Cannavaro's move last week to Al-Ahli in Dubai hardly helped dispel that impression.

Lacklustre displays in warm-ups, including a loss to Mexico, have added to the impression of a side falling far short of the one that beat France in the final in Berlin four years ago.

But the Italians do have a few things going for them -- experienced players throughout their squad and in Lippi one of the game's top coaches who is a proven winner.

The former Juventus boss knows, like every Italian who remembers their slow start in 1982 before winning the title, that success at the finals is all about putting together a run of results with performances peaking at the right time.

"No team comes to the World Cup knowing exactly what they can do, you grow through the tournament," he said this week ahead of their opening game against Paraguay on Monday.

The calf injury to creative midfielder Andrea Pirlo, which will keep him out of at least the first two games, is a blow however and will test the flexibility of Lippi's plans and the depth of his squad.

Group F should be relatively forgiving for Italy though.

TOUGHEST TEST

New Zealand are outsiders, Paraguay traditionally disappoint at the finals while Slovakia are playing in their first World Cup as an independent nation.

The Slovaks should provide the toughest test for the Azzurri with classy midfielder Marek Hamsik, who plays in Serie A for Napoli, their top performer.

"The most important match is against New Zealand, the first match," Hamsik told Reuters.

"We watched their (warm-up) match against Serbia, New Zealand won 1-0, it's a strong team. The match against Italy is very different for us because they are the world champions," he added referring to Slovakia's final group game.

The Kiwis were boosted by that friendly win over the Serbs and have shown themselves to be a hard-working unit, albeit one lacking top-level experience.

The 'All Whites' should manage an improvement on their only previous World Cup appearance, in Spain in 1982 when they lost all three games with a goal difference of 12-2.

If there is to be a surprise in the group Gerardo Martino's Paraguay should be the team to provide it.

Although the South Americans are appearing in their eighth finals, they have never got beyond the second round and have failed at the group stage on four occasions.

However, this time they qualified in style, just a point behind top-ranked Brazil and with a victory over Argentina indicating that Lippi's team will face a tough opener.

Greek players, Chinese reporters robbed

South African airforce silver falcons fly past the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg June 9,...

Published>Fri, Jun 11 10 12:47 AM

Three Greek World Cup players had money stolen from their hotel rooms and Chinese journalists were robbed at gunpoint, officials said on Thursday, stoking concerns a day before the sports spectacular starts.

The separate incidents in the crime-plagued host country follow the armed robbery of Spanish and Portuguese journalists at a lodge north of Johannesburg on Wednesday.

South Africa, which has spent heavily on security, has been hoping the World Cup would boost its tourism sector and provide a jolt of pride for the continent but experts have said persistent reports of crime could undermine those aspirations.

Greek team spokesman Michael Tsapidis said the players were not upset by the theft at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Durban and they were "extremely satisfied" with the way the hotel had responded to the incident.

"In our opinion this is not such a big deal. This incident is something that could happen anywhere in the world," he told a news conference.

The three Chinese journalists has been in the country for a few hours and were on their way to the main venue for the Cup in Soccer City on the edge of Soweto, a sprawling township outside of Johannesburg, the local paper Beeld reported citing various sources.

They stopped on the side of the road when gunmen approached and stole equipment from their vehicle, it said.

Chinese embassy officials confirmed the robbery but offered few details. South Africa police said the incident has not been officially reported and were looking into the case.

Petty theft is a fact of life in South Africa, a country of that averages 50 murders a day.

ARRESTS MADE

FIFA said on Thursday three arrests had been made for the armed robbery of Spanish and Portuguese journalists at a lodge in Magaliesburg, a sleepy, scenic town about an hour north of Johannesburg, and all the stolen property had been recovered.

The thieves made off with cameras, computers, credit cards and cash. The FIFA spokesman played down the incident, saying the soccer body's main concern was traffic chaos.

Police bolstered their presence in the Magaliesburg, where the Portugal squad base and police chief Bheki Cele visited the area on Thursday to express regret over the matter, a statement said.

"General Cele assured the group that all plans for a safe World Cup were still on track and he was confident that South Africans and fans alike will have a fantastic time over the next month," the statement said.

But travelling journalists including one held at gunpoint were angry at FIFA for not showing greater concern for their safety.

"It's just ridiculous, a total lack of respect for people who have come here to work, to show this country to the whole world," said photographer Antonio Simoes.

The raided hotel now has several police officers patrolling the grounds around the clock and almost all the other hotels have police or private security protecting journalists.

"FIFA saying it was more concerned with traffic than someone being attacked in a hotel room with a gun to their head does not dignify the institution and the organisation in any way," Paulo Guerrinha, a reporter for the Portuguese internet portal Sapo, told Reuters.

"A situation like this cannot be devalued like it has been," he said.

Slovakia's Stoch joins Fenerbahce from Chelsea

Published Fri, Jun 11 10 12:27 AM

Chelsea midfielder Miroslav Stoch has joined Turkey's Fenerbahce on a four-year deal, both clubs said on Thursday.

Stoch, in South Africa preparing for Slovakia's first appearance at a World Cup, joined Premier League Chelsea in 2006 as a 16-year-old.

He made five appearances for the Londoners as a substitute before going on loan to Twente Enschede this season and helping them win the Dutch championship.

The clubs, who announced the move on their websites (www.chelseafc.com and www.fenerbahce.org) did not give details of the fee.

Stoch is expected to be one of the key players for Slovakia at the World Cup. They are drawn in Group F with New Zealand, Italy and Paraguay. (Reporting by Sonia Oxley; Editing by Alison Wildey)

Crime tempers joy ahead of World Cup kickoff

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 11:47 PM

South African excitement climbed to a crescendo on Thursday on the eve of the continent's first World Cup but there were reminders of problems that could spoil their dreams of changing Africa's image forever.

Three Greek players had money stolen from their hotel and Chinese journalists were robbed on Thursday, following Wednesday's incident when armed men robbed Spanish and Portuguese journalists at a lodge northwest of Johannesburg.

The incidents were comparatively minor but coming so early were bad news for World Cup organisers who have spent years assuring fans and journalists alike that 41,000 specially deployed police will keep the tournament safe.

Meanwhile, two Britons were killed when a bus overturned in the northeast of country. Although the tourists in the bus did not appear to be World Cup fans, it was a reminder of another problem that has caused concern, South Africa's notoriously dangerous roads and transport problems.

None of this was likely to dent South Africans' frenzied excitement as they revelled in the realisation that the World Cup many had said they could not organise was about to take off.

"Vuvuzela" trumpets blasted and soccer chants rang out from fans wearing their national colours. South African joy was boosted by news that the father of the post-apartheid nation, Nelson Mandela, was likely to attend Friday's opening ceremony.

Mandela, 91, and in frail health, is widely credited with helping South Africa win the World Cup bid in 2004 and if he does attend the opening match he will inspire the nation as he did when South Africa won the Rugby World Cup in 1995.

A year ago South Africans were accused by FIFA of being too apathetic about the tournament and widely slated their underachieving national side "Bafana Bafana" (The Boys).

REVIVED BAFANA

Now after an unbeaten run of 12 matches the rejuvenated team are national heroes and pin-ups and go into the opening match against Mexico in Johannesburg's cavernous Soccer City stadium, Africa's largest, brimming with confidence. They could yet be one of Africa's dark horses in this tournament.

President Jacob Zuma urged them, perhaps over-ambitiously, to bring him the trophy.

But even if they fall short, as one of the lowest-ever rated host teams, South Africa expects the World Cup to bring a legacy of tourism, investment, development and greater racial harmony in an oft-troubled nation, 16 years after apartheid ended.

In hotels and training grounds across the wide and beautiful nation, players and coaches of the 32 competing nations had their eyes set on lifting the globe's most coveted sporting prize on July 11, although an extraordinary series of injuries has reduced the odds on some.

The majority of 90,000 people in Soccer City on Friday will be backing Bafana Bafana with what other teams consider a potent secret weapon, the cacophony of vuvuzelas that can deafen and intimidate the opposition.

Mexican fans laughing and singing under a statue of Nelson Mandela in sunny Johannesburg on Thursday said they had no qualms about spoiling the local party. Other pockets of fans chanted in multiple languages in the ritzy Sandton district.

Uruguay face France in the second match of the 64-game tournament's opening day. Among foreigners pouring in, none can have taken a more epic journey than a Uruguayan family who have driven 100,000 km across 41 nations in a tiny car since early 2007 before reaching the World Cup by ship.

SPAIN, BRAZIL FAVOURITES

Other African nations like Ivory Coast and Ghana on paper have much stronger sides than South Africa, though the loss of Didier Drogba and Michael Essien are a blow to their chances.

Few expect an end to Europe and South America's stranglehold on the World Cup, with Spain and Brazil everyone's favourites.

Argentina have arguably one of the most gifted sides, though their chances could depend on the chemistry between maverick manager Diego Maradona and brilliant forward Lionel Messi.

Usual wild expectations associated with England's team of Premier League players are tempered this time round after some unconvincing friendlies and injuries to key players. But if they win their Group C, they have a kind draw to the semi-finals.

Away from speculation of what is to come on the pitch, Netherlands winger Eljero Elia sparked possibly the first major controversy of the tournament by appearing to insult Moroccans on a live streaming video.

"I want to apologise ... I am not a racist," he said.

Africans are praying the month-long tournament will counter what they see as old caricatures of hunger, AIDS and crime and portray the continent as a can-do region worthy of boosted investment.

But the robberies gave an unwelcome reminder on the eve of the tournament that this country is one of the world's most violent outside a warzone.

Another negative for the tournament is an extraordinary injury list full of big names.

The latest scare was over Switzerland captain Alex Frei, who is doubtful for their opener against Spain next week after hurting an ankle in training.

The World Cup party was to officially start on Thursday night with a concert full of international and African musicians in South Africa's biggest township Soweto. (Editing by Michael Holden)

Roddick not panicking despite early Queen's exit

Andy Roddick of the U.S. returns the ball during his tennis match against Dudi Sela...

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 11:27 PM

Andy Roddick was not pressing the panic button after an early exit at Queen's Club on Thursday left the American with a little too much time on his hands.

The 28-year-old American was beaten 6-4 7-6 by Israel's Dudi Sela in the third round of the tournament he has won on four previous occasions, denying him some valuable grasscourt play as Wimbledon looms.

"I'm not super concerned about the way I'm hitting the ball, I'm not stressing out about any one part of my game too much," Roddick, beaten in three Wimbledon finals by Roger Federer, told reporters. "It's basically getting over my own impatience as opposed to worrying about anything about my game.

"I would much rather spend the time getting some matches in. I'm not that worried about it, but I definitely would rather kind of have (the practice sessions) count for something.

"I'm not worried about being able to play on a grass court. I know how to do that. One match at Queen's isn't going to ruin what I've done on this surface for the last eight years."

Roddick only had one break point in the match, on Sela's opening service game, but after failing to convert that he immediately lost his own serve and struggled to stay with an inspired opponent from then on.

The fourth seed had two set points to take the third round clash into a decider, but Sela saved both with some tremendous stroke play and then claimed a notable victory on his second match point with a full-length diving volley.

"I think I could have done some things differently, but I thought he played a pretty perfect match," was Roddick's typically honest assessement of his performance on an overcast day at the elite west London club.

"I've played worse at this tournament before and gotten through and won it. I thought he played a really good match. He outplayed me today."

Roddick ruled out a quick dash home to Texas and said he would not ask for a late entry into next week's Eastbourne event despite playing just two matches on grass this week.

"I'm not gonna go into a panic mode and start doing that stuff," the former world number one said, adding that his wife was flying in to join him this week.

"I'll try to get some practice in. I'll probably get more time on the track or in the gym.

"Maybe I'll figure out if there's some shows or a concert to kind of get away and take my mind off the fact that I'm not playing here."

Greek players, Chinese reporters robbed

South African airforce silver falcons fly past the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg June 9,...

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 10:47 PM

Police bolstered their presence in the Magaliesburg, where the Portugal squad base, but travelling journalists including one held at gunpoint were angry at FIFA for not showing greater concern for their safety.

S.Africa govt workers threaten strike, govt plays down

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 10:27 PM

Unions representing more than a million South African state workers on Thursday threatened to strike during the World Cup, but the government said there was no need to panic.

The state employees are the latest workers to threaten industrial action that could disrupt the world's largest sporting event staged for the first time on African soil, embarrassing President Jacob Zuma and his government. Officials played down the latest threat.

"There is no need to press the panic button," Randall Howard, special adviser to the Public Service minister, told a news conference.

The unions said the workers, including nurses, police officers, teachers and other government officials such as immigration staff, turned down a 6.2 percent wage raise and demanded an above inflation 8.5 percent salary increase.

"If the conciliation efforts fail next (week on) Friday, we will have no choice but to strike in the middle of the World Cup," Manie de Clerq, secretary-general of the Public Servants Association told Reuters.

De Clerq said a potential strike could include immigration officials, leaving the country's ports of entry short-staffed at a time when hundreds of thousands of visitors are descending on South Africa for the tournament.

"It is unfortunate and we don't want to spoil the games but you can't give train drivers big increases and ignore state workers," said de Clerq referring to above inflation increases given to workers at the country's logistics group Transnet.

Fourteen other unions affiliated to the country's powerful Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) also threatened to strike.

"We refuse to be blackmailed by the employer because of the World Cup 2010 and we shall fight until our demands are met," Mungwena Maluleke, the negotiator representing COSATU unions, said in a statement.

Labour unions have used the tournament, which starts in less than 24 hours, to bargain for higher wages which analysts warn could in the long run ruin the country's ability to attract investment and create jobs as it recovers from recession.

"At the end of the day, you need to set caps because what you spend on public sector wages poses an upside risk to the fiscal deficit," said Peter Attard Montalto, emerging markets analyst at Nomura International.

Zuma is already at odds with his allies in the unions and the communist party over his failure to adopt more pro-poor policies and the wage spat could worsen relations.

I turned down a PCB offer for ban revoke: Younis

Published Thu, Jun 10 10 10:07 PM

Karachi, Jun 10 (PTI) Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has confirmed that he had turned down an offer from the cricket board for a settlement to have his indefinite ban removed by the PCB-appointed appeals judge. Appeals judge Irfan Qadir last week, nonetheless, removed Younis'' ban, saying that the PCB had taken an open handed decision while enforcing the penalty on the former captain. But Younis said before the appeals judge''s decision he rejected a PCB offer to settle for a fine in place of the ban. Younis, who has finally struck some form with the bat while playing for Surrey in England, also said that he bore no hard feelings towards any of his teammates. "I have no hard feelings towards anyone. I have played with these guys for a long time and my mind is clear. I always wanted that if anyone had any complaints with me as captain he should have sat down with me and sorted out the matter. That is the way I look at it even today," he said. Younis is tipped to be included in the 17-member Pakistan squad for the Test tour to England starting later this month after the Asia Cup and has already been named in the 35-man probables list. "I definitely want to play for Pakistan it has given me a lot of honor. I want to be ready for the Test series when it comes," Younis said. The senior batsman admitted that the last few months had been tough for him and his family. "I felt alone since last year when I gave up captaincy and during the inquiry. I have nothing to hide so I was always confident that eventually my stand would be vindicated," Younis said. Younis said he always tried to remain dignified and calm during the crisis period. "I just want to play cricket with a peace of mind," he stated.

PCB remains mum on Howard''s nomination

Published Thu, Jun 10 10 09:37 PM

Karachi, Jun 10 (PTI) The Pakistan Cricket Board continues to remain tight-lipped regarding its stance on former Australian Prime Minister John Howard nomination for the post of ICC vice president with PCB chairman Ejaz Butt terming the matter as "sensitive". "This is a confidential matter and I don''t want to make public comments on it," Butt said. "Whatever we have decided we will discuss at the ICC meeting but this is something the ICC only can give a public statement. All I can say is we are aware of the situation and we know it is an important and sensitive matter," he stated. Butt''s comments came after PCB approached the government for advice on the matter and reliable sources said the government had told the board chief that they are in a better position to take a call on the issue. Australia and New Zealand have nominated Howard for the vice-president''s post and under the ICC regulations if four countries do not accept the nomination, Howard cannot get into the world body. If the former Australian PM does get appointed as vice-president he will be in line to take over as ICC president after four years. Sri Lanka, South Africa and Zimbabwe have already publicly voiced their refusal to accept Howard''s nomination whom they see as a controversial figure. With India and other countries, apparently, set to support Howard''s nomination, Pakistan''s vote could prove to be crucial in deciding the Australian''s fate which will be discussed next week at the ICC chief executives meeting. There is growing pressure on Butt from the public and media to resist the nomination of Howard who is not seen as a friend of Pakistan cricket. "In 2002 our former President Pervez Musharraf assured Howard that if the Australian team toured Pakistan they would be provided Presidential level security. But Howard left the matter for the Australian board to decide and was not in favor of the tour going ahead," former Test player Basit Ali said. "The Australians have been in the lead of shunning tours to Pakistan and Howard made no effort to help out Pakistan cricket in its difficult times. He is also controversial because of his comments about Muttiah Muralitharan and Zimbabwe," Basit noted. Another former player said this was a golden opportunity for Butt to improve his public image and popularity ratings. "Pakistan should join Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and South Africa in shunning Howard''s nomination," he added.

IWHF springs to life and questions HI's legitimacy

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 07:57 PM

New Delhi, June 10 (IANS) The mess surrounding Indian hockey administration got murkier as Hockey India (HI) and Indian Women's Hockey Federation (IWHF) questioned each other's legitimacY. While IWHF president Vidya Stokes is now the head of HI, its secretary Amrit Bose is looking to revive and merge it with the resurrected Indian Hockey Federation (IHF).

Bose has called a Special Annual General Meeting (SAGM) of the IWHF Saturday, claiming strong support from the state units, including those who went with HI during the merger.

Bose told IANS Thursday that the meeting has been called at the behest of various state units.

'A number of units have confirmed their participation in the meeting, even state units affiliated to Hockey India. Some HI units are unhappy that they have not found a place in the state units after the merger. Questions were raised over the lopsided affiliation and merger process,' Bose said.

'IWHF is a legitimate unit and we are trying to revive it. We are looking to merge it with IHF which got its suspension lifted through a court order.' she said.

HI, which claims to be the sole representative of the sport in the country, shot back calling the meeting illegal.

Stokes said IWHF was disaffiliated by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in 2000 and its members have already merged with HI.

'The meeting being called by few individuals of the defunct IWHF is illegal since it is not called by the president or has been called with her approval,' Stokes said.

'The IWHF was disaffiliated by FIH in 2000 as its constitution demanded merger of the men and women's federations. In 2008 HI came into existence after IHF's supersession,' Stokes said in a statement.

'In December 2008, I as president of IWHF gave consent to the IOA president for its merger with H.'

Stokes said Bose herself was part of the decision and at a meeting with the Sports Ministry in 2008 she conveyed IWHF's decision to merge with HI.

'Smt (Amrit) Bose informed (the government) that the IWHF has already conveyed its written acceptance to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for the proposed merger,' Stokes said.

Stokes also said Bose was part of all HI board meetings in which merger of units were approved from Nov 2009-Jan 2010.

Bose admitted that she has been part of HI, but has been protesting over the manner in which the merger process was carried out.

'I have always raised my voice against the merger process and it is no secret. HI has failed to put up an elected body in place. Moreover many state IWHF units have complained about not getting representation in the state associations after the merger,' said Bose.

'How can HI decide on our legitimacy when they are not being recognised by the government,' Bose said pointing to the Sports Ministry's submission in the court that it does not recognise HI.

Interestingly, the ministry has appointed an observer for the IWHF meeting as they had done in the case of the IHF Special General Assembly June 6.

Bose claimed that more than 20 units will take part in the meeting to decide future course of action.

Mandela still undecided about attending opening game

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 07:37 PM

Johannesburg, June 10 (DPA) South Africa's former president Nelson Mandela will decide on the day if he will attend Friday's World Cup opening match between South Africa and Mexico in Soccer City.

President Jacob Zuma has issued an open invitation to the frail 91-year-old national icon, who has restricted his public appearances in recent years.

'The former president has an open invitation to attend. He wants to attend, it depends on his feeling that day,' Rich Mkhondo, communications officer of the World Cup local organising committee said Thursday at a press conference in Soccer City.

'We all hope that he will be there.'

There has been months of uncertainty over whether the elderly statesman, who played a central role in South Africa's bid to become the tournament's first African host, will attend the kick-off.

Mandela lived in Soweto before being jailed for 27 years between 1963 and 1990 for resisting white supremacist rule.

Four years after his release, he was elected president in the country's first democratic national elections.

President Zuma has also issued invites to the heads of states of all members of the African Union.

'We hope that the majority of them will attend,' said Mkhondo.

Other dignitaries scheduled to attend the opening game include former South African presidents Thabo Mbeki and F.W. de Klerk, US Vice President Joe Biden and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Oz pacer Johnson ruled out of ODI series in England

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 07:15 PM

Sydney, June 10 (ANI): Australian left arm fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has been ruled out of the limited overs segment of the forthcoming tour of England because of an infected right elbow. He has been replaced young New South Wales quick Josh Hazlewood, 19.

Australian team physio Alex Kountouris said Johnson required "specialist medical management" and will need to stay home in order to be fit for the series against Pakistan that follows five one day internationals against England.

"Mitchell had an infected right elbow during the ICC Twenty20 World Cup," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Kountouris, as saying.

"Since returning to Australia he has had a flare-up of the condition and is currently being treated for it. As part of the treatment he requires specialist medical management over the coming weeks and as such he's been ruled out of the six ODIs against Ireland and England," Kountouris added.

The unexpected loss of one of the team's key figures caused a rush of activity at Cricket Australia headquarters in Melbourne on Thursday, amid last minute preparations for the trip to England.

Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said Johnson's loss was Hazlewood's gain, as a hugely promising young quick with the height and accuracy suitable to gain life from English pitches.

"It is indeed a very exciting time for Australian cricket as we continue to take opportunities to expose our talented cricketers to international cricket. Josh Hazlewood has been identified as one of a crop of young fast bowlers who the NSP consider can impact for Australia at international level," he added.

"The NSP consider he will be well suited to English conditions and this provides a great opportunity for him to be part of the Australian set up on a tour of Ireland and England."We are sure if he gets an opportunity he will perform very well," Hilditch said. (ANI)

Semenya cleared to compete as woman: media

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 05:33 PM

Controversial athlete Caster Semenya has been cleared to return to competition as a woman after nearly a year of speculation on her gender, a media report said today.

The International Association of Athletics Federations has given the South African 800m champion the green light to run again after reviewing the results of gender-verification tests, reported television station ETV, citing unnamed athletics sources.

Semenya and Sport Minister Makhenkesi Stofile are scheduled to give a press conference on the outcome of the gender dispute today at 1830 IST, but neither the athlete's coach nor the ministry would comment on the ETV report.

"I can't comment on anything until I hear it from the minister myself," Semenya's coach, Michael Seme, told AFP.

"There is an outcome on this matter, but as we are speaking now I also don't know whether it's positive or negative," said ministry spokesman Manase Makwela, quoted in The Times newspaper.

The 800m world champion has not run since leaked test results said she was a hermaphrodite following her win at the Berlin championships in August.

The incident sparked anger from the South African public and government, who have rallied behind the athlete.

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 05:27 PM

Sachin Tendulkar's bat will be used by a Pakistan youngster against India.

Pakistan's rookie batsman Umar Amin is hoping to make a successful debut for his country at the upcoming Asia Cup by playing with a bat which belongs to iconic Indian Sachin Tendulkar.

The bat was gifted to 20-year old Amin by paceman Shoaib Akhtar after doing well in a domestic match last year.

"I got the bat for scoring a match winning innings in a domestic game and I still have it with me it is a treasured possession for me. I intend to make my debut for Pakistan with that bat," Amin, who plays for Rawalpindi, said.

The youngster has been a prolific scorer in domestic cricket and has also done well for the Pakistan under-19 and A teams. He recently scored a hundred against the England Lions team in the UAE.

Amin said being selected for Pakistan senior team was a dream come true and he was keen to make the most of this opportunity.

"It was a great occasion for me, my family and my friends when we learnt about my selection. But now the real test is to make my presence felt if I get a chance to play in the tournament," he said.

Amin said he was familiar with the Sri Lankan conditions having toured there with Pakistan's second string side.

Umar, who averages over 42 in first class cricket, was playing a T20 club match in his hometown of Rawalpindi when he heard of his selection in the squad.

"My mother called me up and told me that I have been selected in the Asia Cup Squad."

Amin said he was excited at the prospect of facing top international bowlers particularly spinners.

"It will be a challenge and I want to prove that I am ready for international cricket," he said.

Semenya cleared to compete as woman: media

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 05:22 PM

South African hoteliers to distribute free condoms to fans for safe sex

London, Jun 10 (ANI): Fans visiting South Africa for the 2010 World Cup will get free condoms so that they have safe sex.

A group of South African hoteliers will be distributing 160,000 free condoms to urge World Cup guests to "play it safe".

The condoms are among one million to be given out by the Department of Health during the tournament in a country with one of the world's highest HIV-infected populations.

They will be left in rooms at about 100 hotels. Instructions for use will be included, The Times reports.

"We are distributing one million condoms across the country," said Kai Crooks-Chissano, project manager at the South African Business Coalition on HIV/Aids.

"We thought one of the best places for condom use might just be in the bedrooms. Good sex is safe sex."

The condom packaging has been branded in partnerships with tourist associations and hotel chains.

Cape Town Tourism adopted the message "play it safe in Cape Town", while the Southern Sun chain will offer condoms branded "I am responsible" at 60 hotels. in estimated 5.7 million South Africans are HIV-positive, according to the UN Aids agency. (ANI)

The science behind how to 'Bend It Like Beckham'

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 04:37 PM

Johannesburg, June 10 (ANI): Science has offered an explanation of how a soccer ball 'curls' and changes direction after it is kicked.

"The physics of soccer balls is complex and varies with each type of ball. We've already heard negative reports about Jabulani, despite being one of the most perfect footballs ever produced!" News24 quoted Dr Tony Kirkbride of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), as saying.

He added: "The arc is a function of ball geometry, weight, air temperature and viscosity, as well as velocity, position and direction of impact, not to mention skill of the player in bringing all these variables together for the perfect delivery."

According to the website Soccerballworld.com: "The air travels faster relative to the centre of the ball where the periphery of the ball is moving in the same direction as the airflow. This reduces the pressure, according to Bernouilli's principle. The opposite effect happens on the other side of the ball, where the air travels slower relative to the centre of the ball.

"There is therefore an imbalance in the forces and the ball deflects - or, as Sir JJ Thomson put it in 1910, 'the ball follows its nose'. This lateral deflection of a ball in flight is generally known as the 'Magnus effect'." (ANI)

Ferrari extends Massa's contract for another two years

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 04:21 PM

London, Jun 10 (ANI): Ending speculation that Felipe Massa would be replaced by Renault's Robert Kubica next season, Ferrari has shocked Formula One by extending the Brazilian's contract for another two years.

Mark Webber was another driver linked to the move before he confirmed his commitment to Red Bull earlier this week.

It means Ferrari will have an unchanged line-up until the end of the 2012 season, as Fernando Alonso is also contracted to the Italian giants, The Sun reports.

Massa has been with Ferrari since 2001, but his future was thrown into question due to his bad form and the expiration of his current deal at the end of this year.

Massa, who recovered from shocking head injuries he sustained midway through 2009, said: "I am happy to be given the opportunity to drive for Ferrari for a further two seasons."

"Throughout my entire Formula One career, I have always raced with an engine made in Maranello. And it is a matter of pride for me to be able to continue working with a team that I regard as a second family," he added.

Team principal Stefano Domenicali said: "Felipe has been part of Ferrari for almost a decade. Together with us he has grown as a driver and as a man, going through some very difficult times as well as giving us moments of great happiness.

"We wanted to show proof of stability for the future, believing in the worth of a driver pairing that is without equal in terms of talent, speed and its ability to work together for the good of the team." (ANI)

US, UK diplomats in war of words over upcoming World Cup match

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 03:53 PM

New York, June 10 (ANI): Diplomats in US and the UK are embroiled in a new battle of words as Saturday's World Cup match is nearing.

According to e-mails leaked to the Times of London, Louis Susman, American ambassador to Britain, approached his British counterpart in Washington to make a wager on the game between the US squad and England.

"We will understand if you decline, given the outcome of the last such encounter," the New York Post quoted US press secretary Philip Breeden in London as saying.

The US beat England 1-0 in Brazil.

However, Martin Longden, rep for British Ambassador Nigel Sheinwald in DC, replied: "I regret that I cannot immediately recall the encounter to which you refer. No doubt it is remembered fondly on these shores; we have quite forgotten it, however."

And he proposed the terms as-dinner at a Washington, DC, steakhouse if England wins, supper at a London pub on Longden's dime if the US wins.

While Breeden accepted, it was Longden who got the last word.

"You should know that the ambassador takes his steak like American soccer victories-somewhat rare," he said. (ANI)

France seek World Cup redemption after Henry handball

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 03:47 PM

Cape Town, June 10 (DPA) France take the field in their football World Cup opener against Uruguay Friday seeking redemption for the handball by Thierry Henry that bought their qualification against Ireland -- at a high price.

Henry's blatant use of the arm in setting up William Gallas for the winning goal in the play-off against Ireland, and his subsequent refusal to own up until too late, caused massive controversy.

The Irish were incensed, neutrals disgusted and even French fans turned on the former golden boy.

As if that wasn't bad enough, several French players - including star man Franck Ribery - earlier this year became embroiled in a scandal involving an underage prostitute.

Suffice to say that Les Bleus enter the tournament with a sullied reputation.

They have the chance to redeem themselves when the action starts in earnest in their opening Group D match in Cape Town's Green Point Stadium - although Barcelona's Henry may find himself on the bench.

So far, though, there have been few signs they can perform better on-field than off.

A 1-0 loss to China in the warm-up campaign heaped more pressure on coach Raymond Domenech, who is already unpopular at home and will be replaced by former stalwart defender Laurent Blanc once the tournament is over.

There are also signs of discontent in the camp.

Gallas on Tuesday called off a press conference at the last minute, leaving the team spokesman to inform the press that the defender had decided 'not to say a single word' during the whole tournament.

He is reportedly upset at being overlooked for the captaincy in favour of Manchester United's Patrice Evra and is apparently refusing to follow Domenech's instructions.

Of some solace to France is the fact they can call on the talents of Ribery - who should be doubly motivated after missing out on Bayern Munich's Champions League final appearance through suspension - Bordeaux's Yoann Gourcuff and Chelsea's rejuvenated striker Nicolas Anelka.

Many feel this talent pool should be enough to see the French through a relatively weak group that also includes Mexico and South Africa.

Two-time winners Uruguay have not made an impact on the finals since 1970, when they reached the semifinals, but they should not be taken lightly.

Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan - who has brushed off concerns over a knock suffered in training - and Ajax's Luis Suarez have been in free-scoring form recently and present a potent goal threat.

The South Americans thumped Switzerland (3-1) and Israel (4-1) during their warm up campaign and - with confidence high and expectations low - could well spring a surprise.

Bafana eager to show numbers mean nothing

Published>Thu, Jun 10 10 03:37 PM

Johannesburg, June 10 (DPA) When South Africa take on Mexico in Friday's football World Cup opening match in Soccer City, the outcome should be clear.

Mexico is ranked the 17th best country in the world and can look back at a World Cup history that has seen them participate at the finals 13 times before. The last time they failed to advance past the first round was back in 1978.

Their run-up to Friday's game has been impressive with just two defeats - against England and the Netherlands - in the 12 matches they played this year.

And last week they beat the reigning world champions Italy 2-1 in their last friendly ahead of the World Cup.

But if all of that counts in favour of Mexico, there is plenty that sways the odds back in South Africa's favour.

Even if they are ranked just 83rd in the world, the biggest factor in their favour will, of course, be the 90,000 plus crowd in Soccer City, the overwhelming majority of whom will be behind the hosts.

South African goalkeeper Itumuleng Khune is aware that the crowd, most of whom will be blowing their traditional African trumpets called vuvuzela, will be a boost to Bafana.

'Our fans are special and are going to play a key role. Our loyal supporters will play their part. We are not looking at a draw - we want three points for a win and kick off the tournament in style.

'We know how important it is to win and while Mexico are not going to make it easy for us, we are going to make it as tough as possible for them,' he said earlier this week.

South Africa themselves go into the game on the back of an unbeaten run of 12 matches and even though the majority of opponents were not exactly considered amongst the super-powers of world football, victories against Colombia and Denmark has taken confidence and expectations sky-high.

Their Brazilian World Cup-winning coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has had the luxury of being able to work with the majority of his squad for more than three months as the South African league ended early and he selected a squad consisting mainly of locally-based players.

The key players for the home side are striker Katlego Mphela and midfielders Teko Modise and Steven Pienaar.

Everton's Pienaar can use the World Cup to showcase his talents and impress bigger clubs to lure him away from the Toffees, while for Modise a move away from South African cub Orlando Pirates could be the reward at the end of a successful World Cup run.

Forward Mphela, whose world-class goal against Denmark gave South Africa the 1-0 victory last weekend, is peaking at the right time and six goals in South Africa's last four matches would suggest that he will be the danger man upfront.

He said the hosts would not be underestimating the Mexicans, though. 'I have watched the Mexicans against England, Netherlands and Italy and they are good,' he said after a training session.

'If I get a chance to score I will, as the last five matches have done wonders for my morale and that of other players. We are ready for Mexico.'

Mexican coach Javier Aguirre will be hoping that captain Rafael Marquez, 31, who is probably playing in his last World Cup, will not be found wanting for pace at the back for the El Tri, as the Mexican team is called.

Upfront the coach can call on Javier Hernandez, whose seven goals in 12 international matches have earned him a move to Manchester United at the end of the World Cup.

Aguirre, who himself played in the 1986 World Cup finals, can also use Arsenal's Carlos Vela upfront and although he is used rather sparingly by his club coach Arsene Wenger, his nine international goals show that he is a lethal finisher.

With France and Uruguay the other two sides in the group, a good result is important for both sides, possibly even more so for Bafana Bafana as the opening game will probably set the tone for the rest of the tournament - both on and off the field of play.
