Indian men take on Pak in Asiad hockey event tomorrow

Published>Fri, Nov 19 10 01:23 PM

India are all set to cross swords with Pakistan in a high-octave men's group B clash in what is billed as the 'big moment' of the Asian Games hockey competition at the Aoti field here tomorrow, with the latter looking to avenge their three previous defeats to their arch-rivals this year.

Penalty corner experts -- Sandeep Singh of India and the recalled Sohail Abbas of Pakistan could make a difference between laurels and brickbats.

India go into the match against their South Asian rivals with their confidence high after a 9-0 thrashing of Bangladesh for their second victory in the league following a lung-opening 7-0 win over minnows Hong Kong in the first match.

More important is the fact that they had beaten Pakistan by a handsome 7-4 margin in the league stage of the Delhi Commonwealth Games only last month on the way to taking the silver medal behind champions Australia. That was the first time ever India attained medal standard in CWG history.

In two previous clashes this year, India have beaten their traditional rivals 4-1 in the March World Cup, also in Delhi, and 4-2 in the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament in Ipoh, Malaysia.

And now the Rajpal Singh-led squad prepare to go into the clash with the aim of making it four-in-a-row in 2010.

But it is not just India but Pakistan also, who go into the needle clash with big wins to boost them up in the tournament.

Pakistan defeated Hong Kong 12-0 (7-0 half time) in their opening match with Abbas scoring a brace of penalty corner goals. While in their second match yesterday, Pakistan came back from 0-1 down to beat Japan 8-2 (half time 3-1) with the drag-flicker again scoring a couple.

Indian custodian Bharat Chetri needs to be at his best with his reflexes and agility to stop Abbas from gaining the upper hand.

Apart from scoring those four goals against Bangladesh, Sandeep scored a brace against Hong Kong so that in the mini battle between the two penalty corner experts, the Indian has the upper hand currently. Indian team would wish for the same to continue tomorrow as the other set-piece exponent, Dhananjay Mahadik, has drawn a blank so far.

The Indian forward line has functioned effectively in the tournament so far, especially in the second half against Bangladesh after a somewhat subdued effort in the match against Hong Kong.

Tushar Khandekar was the opportunist taking pot shots at the goal off centres and through passes and combined beautifully with Arjun Halappa and Rajpal.

The Indian midfield has not yet made its presence felt in the manner that it would have wanted to and its role would be crucial against Pakistan.

It would also be very important that the Indian deep defence keeps a close watch on Pakistan attackers Waqas Muhammad, Fareed Ahmed and Abdul Haseem Khan, who have already notched four goals.

But the contests between the two teams have mostly been decided by the manner in which the players have handled the huge pressure.

Pakistan have twice been undermined this year by not only the Indians' superior display but also the anxiety of playing in front of a big-cheering crowd at Delhi rooting for the hosts.

The advantage, which India enjoyed in Delhi is not here and it needs to be seen whether Pakistan are able to overcome the nervousness and produce top-drawer stuff, which they could not do in last month's CWG clash between the two teams.

Indian skipper Rajpal does not think the victory in their previous clash, and that too by a huge margin when they ran roughshod over their rivals in Commonwealth Games, would have any bearing on tomorrow's crunch match.

"Though we beat Pakistan in the World Cup and Commonwealth Games, tomorrow's match is a new game. Those wins are history and both teams start with a 0-0 score-line," Rajpal said about the eagerly awaited clash that's expected to attract a big crowd at the main pitch.

Sandeep Singh, who was brilliant with his penalty corner essays and scored four goals to rout Bangladesh, indicated the presence of Abbas in the opposition ranks would make some difference.

"We are performing well, but this is a different Pakistan team. They have brought back some experienced players like Sohail Abbas and it will be a tough contest," he said.

However, India's manager Harendra Singh insisted that the three defeats against India would prey on Pakistan's mind and put them under extra pressure tomorrow.

"The pressure is on Pakistan as we have defeated them three times this year. We should not be too concerned about Pakistan's challenge. Instead it is they who should be concerned about us," a confident Harendra said.

He also did not think Abbas still posed a big threat.

"I don't want to put pressure on the goalkeeper (Bharat Chetri) by talking about Sohail Abbas. He has not been performing that well of late. Why unnecessarily hype up the Abbas factor," he queried.

But the manager thought the match as the key for India to up the momentum in their main aim to attain the gold and qualify directly for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

"Whether Abbas is there or not what we have to do is win the match and use that momentum to take us to the semi-finals and beyond," he said.

India, who finished fifth in the 2006 Doha Games and failed to win a medal in men's hockey for the first time ever, also did not qualify for the subsequent Beijing Olympics for the first time since 1928.

Coach Brasa, however, cautioned after the facile victory against Bangladesh that the team needed to study the Pakistan team.

"They have come with a new team with Sohail Abbas in it. We will watch them, study them before deciding what to do," he said.

Historically, Pakistan -- who have won the gold in the Games on seven occasions and are trying to regain it after two decades -- have had the edge in hockey clashes between the two nations in the past Asiads.

Pakistan have won seven of their eleven encounters, losing two and drawing two.

Two-time Games gold medallists India (in 1966 and 1998) have mostly been at the receiving end against Pakistan.

Kiwi pacer gatecrashes selection meeting to plead for inclusion in Nagpur Test

Published>Fri, Nov 19 10 01:17 PM

Wellington, Nov 19 (ANI): New Zealand fast bowler Andy McKay is hopeful of getting a chance to attack the Indian batting line up in the third test at Nagpur after gate crashing a team selection meeting to personally state his case for inclusion.

With the series levelled at 0-0 after high scoring draws in Ahmedabad and Hyderabad, everything goes on the line at the 60,000-seat VCA Stadium located on the outskirts of Nagpur.

McKay is being strongly considered to replace seamer Brent Arnel, who was tidy, but unthreatening at Hyderabad, Stuff.co.nz reports.

The 30-year-old certainly liked the VCA Stadium pitch when the tourists trained at the venue before a heavy shower forced the Indians to cancel their own session.

"Reverse swing has not been a factor in the first two tests because the surfaces have held together so well. But the pitch here looks drier so theoretically it should reverse," he said.

The Nagpur ground has hosted just two tests, the last of them in February when South African fast bowler Dale Steyn took 10 wickets.

"I am hoping the call up comes and I just have to do everything I can to get into the side. Being able to do 15 overs a day and 40 a week at least throws my hat into the ring," McKay said.

Like his teammates, McKay also understands the key to getting on top of the Indian batsmen is to maintain tight control on the lines bowled. (ANI)

Kiwis hope new opening pair will repeat performance in Nagpur Test

Published>Fri, Nov 19 10 01:07 PM

Wellington, Nov 19 (ANI): New Zealand hopes that their new opening pair of Tim McIntosh and Brendon McCullum will repeat their performance in the third Test against India, the world's top ranked Test nation.

They will certainly not lack for confidence, with McCullum scoring 225 runs in second Test, which earned his team a draw in the second Test at Hyderabad, where McIntosh struck his second test century in the first innings.

They pieced together an opening stand of 125 in the second innings at Hyderabad where McIntosh backed up with 49, remarkably the first occasion a New Zealand opening pair had produced a century stand in 6-1/2 years.

Coach Mark Greatbatch, however, offered a note of caution, saying "you are only as good as your next innings."

"It is important for the guys (batsmen) to share the load and we saw that at Hyderabad with Tim McIntosh and Brendon McCullum when they both went through some tough periods. They changed the strike so the other guy took over and took some of that pressure," Stuff.co.nz quoted Greatbatch, as saying.

He said it was important for people to understand the very real pressures opening batsmen operated under.

"It's not an easy place to bat and we all need to appreciate that. It's the new ball, fresh conditions and even though they are flat conditions over here that is the likely time that players get out, particularly if they make a mistake or their mind's not right," he said.

The third and final Test between New Zealand and India starts at VCA Stadium on Saturday. (ANI)

Sania dedicates opening Asian Games victory to hubby Shoaib

Published>Fri, Nov 19 10 12:37 PM

Guangzhou, Nov 19 (ANI): Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has dedicated her opening Asian Games win to her husband and former Pakistan cricket captain, Shoaib Malik.

Mirza, whose ranking has slumped to 166 following a series of injuries, needed just under an hour to clinch a 6-1, 6-0 win against Hong Kong's Chan Wing Yau, The News reported.

"I didn't feel well in the last two weeks," said the 24-year-old, who captured a gold and two silvers at the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

"I was absent from the team event, but now I feel much better... My husband came here today, that made me very confident and I felt good," she declared.

Mirza next tackles the Chinese sixth seed, Zhang Shuai, who needed just 33 minutes to defeat Nepalese Malika Rana in an embarrassing mismatch.

"Sania is a very strong opponent and we respect her," said Zhang, the world 91, who earlier defeated Mirza at the Guangzhou Open in the same Aoti Tennis Centre court this season. (ANI)

Glamour days 'over' for Tiger Woods' porn star mistress

Published>Fri, Nov 19 10 11:53 AM

London, Nov 19 (ANI): It looks like Tiger Woods' porn star mistress Joslyn James' glamour days are gone.

The adult actress didn't exactly look like much of a catch as she went out for dinner in Hollywood recently.

Clad in unflattering owl-like glasses, a shapeless white top and snakeskin style trousers with ill matched black boots, the star looked markedly older than her 32 years, reports the Daily Mail.

However, she still managed to crack a smile for the cameras after dining at trendy restaurant BOA.

James, real name Veronica Siwik-Daniels, showed her more glamorous side last month when she appeared in a flowing white gown at a DVD launch in Los Angeles.

Back in February she joined a string of women who claimed to have had affairs with Woods when she revealed she had received more than 100 'sexts' from the golfer.

After claiming to have had a three-year affair with Woods, she made some of the 'sexts' public, saying 'It's time to tell the truth about Tiger.'

Since then, she has kept her name in the spotlight. (ANI)

Shooting coach Thomas to quit after Games

Fri, Nov 19 10 11:07 AM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 19 (PTI) India''s chief national shooting coach for 17 years, Sunny Thomas, today said he will quit his post after the Asian Games owing to the dismal display in the ongoing event here. The haul of three silver and two bronze medals so far is disappoiting considering the shooters'' superb performance in last month''s Commonwealth Games in Delhi, where they won 30 medals. "I had a meeting with all the shooters yesterday and told them that I am quitting. I have already informed the secretary general of NRAI Baljit Singh Sethi that I don''t want to continue after the Games. I have been a chief national coach for too long, 17 years and I feel I am a misfit in the system," Thomas told PTI here today. Thomas said he was leaving for Delhi on November 25 after the conclusion of the shot gun events that commenced yesterday and will attend a meeting of the technical committee on November 27 before going back to Kerala on the 28. "I will still be connected with shooting as I am the vice president of the federation. But I feel this responsibility as the chief national coach, which I took over in 1993, is a big burden. I want to get out (as chief coach) and look at things from inside," said the 69-year-old coach. The shooting team created history in the CWG, winning 30 medals including 14 gold, to raise huge expectations of a similarly handy medal haul in the Asian Games but has largely come a cropper. Gagan Narang, who won four gold medals in CWG, returns with only two silvers, including one in the team event, won in the 10m air rifle event. Vijay Kumar won two bronze medals (men''s 10m air pistol and 25m centre fire pistol) while the women got a team silver in the 10m air pistol. Indian shooters had started well on the opening two days, before hitting a medal drought for three days.
