Atwal signs off tied 41st at AT&T Nationals

Published Mon, Jul 05 10 12:22 PM

Pennsylvania (USA), Jul 5 (PTI) Indian golfer Arjun Atwal was done in by a poor front nine as he turned in his worst card of the week -- a four-over 74 -- to sign off tied 41st in the AT&T Nationals here. Atwal, who got to play in the tournament courtesy a Sponsor''s Exemption handed out by his friend and practice partner Tiger Woods, ended his campaign with a total of three-over 283. The Orlando-based golfer, in joint lead after the opening round, was off to an ominous start as he stumbled to a bogey on the first hole. His poor form continued when he dropped two more strokes on the third and sixth holes to make the turn three-over. It was a similar story on the back nine as he dropped shots on the 12th and 14th. His only birdie came on the 16th but that was just not enough to change his fortunes. Atwal, however, did manage to finish ahead of Woods (71), who ended tied 46th at four-over 284. Englishman Justin Rose (70) picked up the title with a total of 10-under 270. American Ryan Moore (65) finished second at nine-under 271.

Pakistan a 'dangerous' Twenty20 team when they want to be: Johnson

Published>Mon, Jul 05 10 11:44 AM

London, July 5(ANI): Ahead of Monday's opening Twenty20 game against Pakistan in Birmingham, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has said that the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup champions are a dangerous side because of their strong batting and bowling line-ups.

"We smashed them in Australia (earlier this year) and Mike Hussey did an amazing job in that last Twenty20 game we played against them. They've got a good bowling attack," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Johnson, as saying.

"Their left-armer (Mohammad) Aamer is a great prospect for them. He's been doing exceptionally well. Shoaib (Akhtar) is over as well, and he's been bowling very fast, so they've got a pretty strong bowling attack."

"They've got some fire with their batting, with the Akmal brothers. They're a dangerous side, when they want to be," he added.

Johnson further said that he has fully recovered from his elbow infection, and dismissed speculations that his elbow complaint was related to a new tattoo he had inked before the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies.

"I wouldn't have thought so. I got the tattoo three weeks before I travelled away (to the West Indies), so that ruled that out. I got to the West Indies and I felt like I knocked it on the plane, but I'm not 100 per cent sure," Johnson said.

"It started off as a little bursa, a little sac of fluid, and then progressed from there. We're not really 100 per cent sure how it came and got infected. It could have been a few things, whether the knock was part of it or not. I had a cortisone injection to try and clear it out, whether that had anything to do with it as well," he added.

The tour also includes another Twenty20 game and two Tests. (ANI)

Bacher in favour of video technology in football

Published Mon, Jul 05 10 10:52 AM

Johannesburg, Jul 5 (PTI) Former Cricket South Africa chief Ali Bacher has called for the introduction of video technology in football as referring blunders have dominated the ongoing FIFA World Cup in South Africa. "Its been working well for cricket, its been working well for rugby and netball but in soccer they are still debating it, I don''t understand because video technology has proved to assist in terms of minimising wrong decisions," Bacher told BuaNews. Following two high-profile refereeing errors during the World Cup, FIFA President Sepp Blatter has promised to reopen discussions on the possibility of introducing video replays at football matches. Video technology has been in operation in cricket for the past 18 years since its introduction in 1992. "Teams have lost matches in the past for wrong reasons and mostly due to wrong decisions and in cricket we decided to change that," Bacher said. The referee at England''s second-round match against Germany last week missed a clear English goal that would have tied the score 2-2. Germany later went on to win the match 4-1. Hours later, another referee awarded a goal to Argentina but replays showed that goal-scorer Carlos Tevez was clearly in an offside position. The South American giants later beat beat Mexico 3-1. And both the incidents later forced Blatter to apologise to the losing nations. Bacher, meanwhile, hailed the South African government for successfully hosting the World Cup. "Its been terrific and a massive success in uniting the country and we have to thank our government for that. I have never seen them so much involved in any sporting event before," the former cricket administrator said at a FIFA press conference yesterday. Retired South African footballer Mark Fish also shared similar sentiments as he feels "the country is united like never before" for the football tournament.

Dhoni weds college sweetheart at private affair

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 11:38 PM

Dehradun/Lucknow, July 4 (IANS) Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni tied the knot with fiancee Sakshi Rawat at a very private affair on the outskirts of Dehradun Sunday evening, a day after the couple's hush-hush engagement.

The mahurat, or auspicious time, for the wedding was fixed for 8.35 p.m. at a country villa owned by former Rajasthan chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vasundhara Raje, a highly-placed source told IANS.

The country villa is on the Dehradun-Chakrata road, 20 km away from the place where his engagement was held Saturday, at Bhagirath resort.

Around half an hour before the auspicious time, Dhoni on horseback and other guests, which included his team-mates Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Ashish Nehra and R.P. Singh and actor John Abraham, walked for around half-a-kilometer to the bride's place, located at the same resort's premises.

John Abraham reached Dehradun, along with Dhoni's teammate Piyush Chawla, earlier Sunday to attend Dhoni's wedding

N. Srinivasan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary and the owner of Chennai Super Kings, which Dhoni led to victory in this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) season, was present at the ceremony.

John's girlfriend and actress Bipasha Basu took to microblogging site Twitter to congratulate the couple.

'Wishing Mahi and Sakshi a very happy life together forever. Sad that I can't be there,' she tweeted.

Bipasha also refuted rumours that Dhoni decided to get married on the spur of the moment, saying the wedding was planned months in advance.

'The wedding on Sunday night was all planned. But no one was supposed to know about it. Whatever the truth, we must all be happy for the couple. It's party time!' she said.

Shilpa Shetty also congratulated the couple, posting: 'Congratulations in order to Mahi and Sakshi, wishing them all the happiness and marital bliss forever.'

The media was kept far away. The hordes of media persons and television OB vans gathered there were not being allowed to proceed by private security guards, around more than one and a half kilometre from the venue, the source said.

Director General of Police Uttarakhand, Subhash Joshi told IANS that he too has not been invited. 'I have not got an invite. They are taking the assistance of local police.'

'They want to have their privacy and we don't want to encroach on it,' he said.

The girl's cousin Abhilasha Bhisht, a Deputy Inspector General of Police who is on deputation on an UN assignment, belongs to the place, said a source.

Dhoni has been reported to have visited Dehradun and Mussoori frequently over the last two years. The girl's father and Dhoni's father were working together in Ranchi. Her grandfather, a retired divisional forest officer, lives in Dehradun.

Modi asks BCCI to provide decisions of SGM

Mumbai, Jul 4 (PTI) Suspended Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi has demanded that he be provided with a copy of all the decisions taken at the Cricket Board''s Special General Meeting held here yesterday, his legal counsel Mehmood Abdi said today. A letter to this effect was dashed off by Modi to BCCI president Shashank Manohar and secretary N Srinivasan late last night by e-mail and was also hand-delivered, Abdi said. The BCCI''s SGM nominated Jyotiraditya Scindia as replacement for Manohar in the reconstituted three-member disciplinary panel to conduct proceedings against Modi who had been issued three show cause notices alleging various irregularities in the conduct of IPL. The SGM also ratified the decision of Srinivasan to refer the charges against Modi and his replies to the three show cause notices to the reconstituted disciplinary panel. Petacchi wins crash-filled first stage

Lampre rider Alessandro Petacchi of Italy celebrates as he crosses the finish line to win...

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 10:36 PM

Italy's Alessandro Petacchi survived a crash-filled first stage of the Tour de France on Sunday to win his fifth stage victory in the race and his first for seven years.

The Italian, now the most successful active rider with 155 career wins, beat Australian Mark Renshaw and Norway's Thor Hushovd on a finish line depleted of most of the favourites who had crashed in the final kilometres.

Petacchi, 36, won four stages on the Tour in 2003 and he probably expected more opposition at the end of a 223.5-km ride from Rotterdam to Brussels.

Renshaw is on the Tour to help Columbia team leader Mark Cavendish but the Briton, who won six stages last year, went out of contention with 2.5 kms to go when he missed a sharp turn and crashed, along with three-times world champion Oscar Freire.

Sunday's final pile-up was huge and involved another pre-stage favourite, American Tylar Farrar and the yellow jersey holder, Swiss Fabian Cancellara.

"The stage was nervous all day but the end was madness. It was chaos," Cancellara, the prologue winner, said.

All the favourites, including Tour champion Alberto Contador and seven-times champion Lance Armstrong, finally crossed the line unhurt.

Briton David Millar and Italian Ivan Basso were involved in a crash midway through the stage when a dog ran into the peloton. Both men got back on their bikes and caught up with the main bunch.

Australia's Adam Hansen, another of Cavendish's team mates, broke his collarbone in another incident.

Dunga to discuss Brazil future with federation

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 10:18 PM

Porto Alegre (Brazil), July 4 (DPA) Carlos Dunga said Sunday he planned to discuss his future with the Brazilian Football Federation, suggesting his days as Brazil coach may not be over yet.

'I have to wait for (federation) president Ricardo Teixeira to return from South Africa next week. Then I will talk to him and decide,' he said from the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre.

Dunga had suggested he would quit as coach following his side's shock elimination from the World Cup after a 1-2 defeat to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

'Everybody knew from the start that my contract was for four years,' Dunga said immediately after Friday's match.

Dunga was appointed to the position to replace Albert Parreira following Brazil's defeat at the same stage in the 2006 World Cup.

Speculation over Dunga's possible replacement has revolved around Felipe Scolari, who led Brazil to World Cup victory in 2002, and former AC Milan coach Leonardo.

Clinical Nadal routs Berdych in Wimbledon final

Spain's Rafael Nadal serves to Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic during the men's singles...

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 09:58 PM

A spellbinding display of brutal hitting and raw speed from Rafa Nadal secured the Spaniard his second Wimbledon title on Sunday with a 6-3 7-5 6-4 victory over 12th seed Tomas Berdych.

Nadal, who has not lost here since the 2007 final after victory in 2008 and injury prevented his defence last year, completely nullified the 1.95m Czech's biggest weapons to storm to an eighth career grand slam and open up a cavernous lead at the top of the world rankings.

The win, which completed a second French Open-Wimbledon double in three years for Nadal, came after two hours and 13 minutes when his 20th forehand winner left Berdych stranded at the net on his first championship point.

He celebrated by slumping on to his back on the baseline, holding his face in his hands before embracing Berdych at the net and performing an impromptu roly poly and double fist pump towards his entourage.

"More than a dream for me, always a dream to play in this final," Nadal said in an on-court interview.

"To have this trophy in my hands, amazing. You're (Berdych) doing an amazing season, sorry for today but I wish you luck for the rest of the season."

From the moment Nadal bounced, weaved and stretched his way down the corridors of the All England Club to Centre Court like a fired-up prize fighter, there was a sense nothing could derail the 24-year-old.

Both held their opening service games to love on a bright and breezy day, and neither was under early pressure, and even a male fan bellowing "I love you Rafa" could not throw the Spaniard's focus.

Game seven turned the tone of the match though, as Nadal stepped up a gear and Berdych's first serve deserted him.

Nadal's forehand was starting to eat up the Berdych serve, and the Mallorcan brought the crowd to life with a searing forehand pass down the line to bring up three break points.

A cutting backhand return had the Czech stretching and Nadal clenched his fist with stern-faced determination when Berdych's forehand skewed out.

The pre-match build-up had focused on the Berdych forehand, which had dismantled six-times champion Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the last two rounds, but Nadal reminded everyone that his is the most potent weapon in the game.

BULLET FOREHAND

He held to love for 5-3 and took the second of two break points in game nine to take the opening set 6-3 in 34 minutes, another bullet forehand return forcing the Czech to net.

Berdych's first serve percentage was hovering around 50, the murderous hitting that marked his progress through the draw was countered by Nadal's chilling pace and the Spaniard quickly snuffed out any half-chances carved out by the 12th seed.

Nadal saved three break points in a 12-minute opening game of the second set, as the swirling wind started to create timing issues for both players.

Hard as he tried, Berdych could not put the Nadal serve under pressure, forehands that had been winners against Federer and Djokovic were gobbled up by the Spaniard, and there was a growing sense of frustration in the 24-year-old's game.

It came bubbling horribly to the surface in game 12 of the second set when out of the blue a slew of unforced errors gave Nadal three break points, and another errant forehand from the Berdych racket sealed the set and effectively his fate.

Berdych, watched from the Royal Box by Jan Kodes, the only Czech man to win the title here in 1973, mixed things up with a few net forays which showed promising signs of unsettling Nadal but the Mallorcan just kept slamming the door.

Nadal saved a break point in the opening game of the third, and the pair held until Berdych, in his first slam final, served to stay in the match at 4-5.

Sensing he was only four points away from the title, Nadal went for the jugular with a trademark side-spin forehand pass to go 0-30.

Berdych battled back to deuce but the dye was cast and on his first championship point another crosscourt forehand winner settled the contest.

"It was a great two weeks for me but he was really strong today, he's showed in the last two months he's the champion and he deserved to win today," Berdych said.

Nadal storms past Berdych for second Wimbledon title

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 09:36 PM

London, July 4 (DPA) Rafael Nadal stormed to his second Wimbledon title in three years, hammering Czech Tomas Berdych 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to win an eighth Grand Slam title Sunday and solidify his grip on the world number one slot.

The Spanish second seed ruthlessly dismissed the conqueror of six-time winner Roger Federer and Serb Novak Djokovic in his previous two matches, with Berdych going down in 2 hours 12 minutes.

Nadal's comprehensive victory was his seventh in succession against 12th seed Berdych, who will move back into the ATP Top 10 on a career-high number eight ranking Monday.

The Spaniard has now won two of the three majors this season after lifting his fifth at Roland Garros in June.

Nadal stands 47-5 on the season with five titles - he now has 41 overall - after going 10 months without one until starting the spring clay season with another Monte Carlo crown.

Nadal got the measure of Berdych mid-way through the opening set, breaking the Czech for 4-3 and engineering his way to the early lead with a second break, 6-3.

The start of the second produced a long game, with Nadal saving three break points to hold. He then decoded the Berdych serve in the final game, breaking to take a two-set lead from the Czech's forehand wide.

In the third, Nadal kept Berdych under pressure throughout, forcing the Czech into errors in the tenth game and profitting from the ensuing match point, which he converted with a whipping forehand winner.

Nadal's trophy came two years after he outlasted Federer in a five-set drama to earn the 2008 title. He did not play in 2009. The Spaniard will lead number two Djokovic by a big margin on the ATP, with Federer down to third for the first time since 2003.

The winner has now claimed his last 14 Wimbledon matches and becomes the only Spaniard in history to win twice at the All England club after contesting his fourth consecutive final.

Berdych was playing for the first time on the Grand Slam big stage after first achieving a semi-final at a major at the French Open a month ago and going one step further at SW19.

Berdych failed in his bid to become just the second Czech men's singles champion at Wimbledon after Jan Kodes, who took the title in 1973. He was the first from his nation to play for the title since Ivan Lendl in 1987.

Pakistan complains about lack of rest days between matches

Published Sun, Jul 04 10 09:22 PM

Karachi, Jul 4 (PTI) The Pakistan cricket team has raised complaints about lack of proper rest days between matches since landing in England late last month. Pakistan is scheduled to be in England till September 27 during which they will play two T20 and two Tests against Australia and then a further two T20 internationals, four Tests and five ODIs against England before returning home. According to sources, the players have drawn the attention of the manager Yawar Saeed and coach Waqar Younis to the fact that they are not getting enough rest days on the tour to England to recover from matches. Since the Pakistan squad reached England on June 26 they have constantly been playing side matches and will play the two T20 internationals against Australia tomorrow and on Tuesday before the first Test starts at Lord''s from July 13. The Pakistani players reached England after playing in the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka where they didn''t make the final. Incidentally, the Pakistan team has been on the road since last year when they went to Sri Lanka for a Test tour and then played in the Champions Trophy in South Africa after which they featured in a ODI series in the UAE and directly went to New Zealand and Australia for full Test series. Meanwhile, captain Shahid Afridi have recovered completely from a side strain and will play the two T20 matches against Australia. Afridi had sustained the side strain during the three day match against Kent and scans showed he had a slight muscular tear and was advised two days rest. After missing the T20 against Essex, he turned out against Northamptonshire yesterday and is now ready for the T20 matches as well.

Akhtar escapes ignominy of being sent back from England

Published Sun, Jul 04 10 09:18 PM

Karachi, Jul 4 (PTI) Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has escaped the ignominy of being sent back home from England after he refused to sign the new code of conduct for players enforced by the Pakistan Cricket Board. According to sources, Shoaib was asked to sign the code of conduct which he had been delaying since the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. "Eventually manager, Yawar Saeed threatened to send him home from England if he didn''t sign the code of conduct," sources in the board said. Sources said that it was captain, Shahid Afridi who played the role of mediator and convinced Shoaib to sign the code of conduct. "Shoaib''s stand was that he would only sign the code of conduct when he was given a new central contract by the board. His argument was that since he was not a centrally contracted player he was not bound to sign the code of conduct," one source said. Shoaib returned to the national squad in the Asia Cup after a 14-months layoff due to fitness and disciplinary issues. He was later retained in Pakistan''s squad for the two T20 internationals against Australia being played on Monday and Tuesday but dropped for the Test series in England. The fast bowler didn''t get a new contract this year due to the fact that he had not played any cricket for Pakistan since last year in May and the board has said it would decide later on whether he will be given a new contract. The fast bowler also had to face the ignominy of having nearly seven million rupees deducted from his earnings and fees by the board earlier this year as part of the fine imposed on him by the appellate tribunal that heard his appeal against a five year ban two years ago. The source said that this time PCB Chairman Ejaz Butt had given clear instructions to the manager to not tolerate any indiscipline or give any preferential treatment to any player and if any player broke the code of conduct he should be flown back home immediately. "The message was there should be no compromise on discipline," one source said. The new board policy came about after the troubled Australian tour early this year which led to the board banning and fining seven leading players. The source said that Yawar had been asking Shoaib to sign the code of conduct in England but he kept on refusing. "It was only because of Shahid Afridi who intervened and sorted out the matter that an ugly situation was averted in the Pakistan camp as all the other players had signed the new code of conduct that carries severe penalties for indiscipline," the source added.

PCB will have deficit budget for the fiscal year 2010-2011

Published Sun, Jul 04 10 08:52 PM

Karachi, Jul 4 (PTI) The refusal of international teams to tour Pakistan since last year will leave the Pakistan Cricket Board with a deficit budget for the fiscal year 2010-2011. The total budget which is expected to be around 1.75 billion rupees will be a deficit one as no international cricket is being organised in Pakistan after the militants attack on the Sri Lankan team last year in Lahore in March. "Due to the deficit budget, the employees of the board will also get only one increment raises in the new fiscal budget although the government has announced a 50 per cent increase in salaries of all government employees in its federal budget," one source said. The new budget is expected to be presented for approval at the governing council meeting of the board on July 7 by the new chief financial officer, Raza Hasan. The last budget for the year 2009/2010 was also submitted and approved after a four month delay and its total overlay was 1.52 billion rupees with a deficit of around 600 million rupees. "There is no doubt that because of foreign teams not visiting Pakistan and mainly because India has frozen bilateral cricket ties with Pakistan, the board is facing a financial crunch. But it has also made up its mind to complete all its ongoing development projects in the new budget," the source said. Interestingly, while the board keeps on cribbing about financial constraints, media reports have regularly highlighted the excess administrative expenses incurred on top officials and the hefty salaries and perks being given out to the senior officials. PCB Chairman Ejaz Butt, himself, has cost the board a lot although he works in a honorary capacity with his frequent travels abroad costing the board in millions.

Yamaha MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo of Spain takes a curve during qualifying practice at the...

Published Sun, Jul 04 10 08:48 PM

Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo was the runaway winner of the Catalan MotoGP on Sunday, a third consecutive victory extending his world championship lead.

The Yamaha rider finished almost five seconds ahead of compatriot and title rival Dani Pedrosa, who held off the persistent challenge of Australia's Casey Stoner to take second place by two-tenths of a second.

Lorenzo moved on to 165 points after seven races, 52 ahead of Pedrosa. Italian Andrea Dovizioso, who had been battling for first place before falling, finished 14th and is third with 91 points.

Champion Valentino Rossi, who is recovering from a broken leg, slipped to down seventh with 61 points.

"It was a very difficult race, very hot, and very tiring. The tyres were a real problem," Lorenzo told Spanish state television.

"Andrea (Dovizioso) was pushing hard and I thought it was going to be like that all the way but he fell which made it easier."

Pedrosa had been fastest in the morning warm-up and flew from fourth on the grid to first going into the opening bend, but a braking problem forced him to balloon wide and he dropped way down the order.

He quickly recovered ground and after five laps was back up to third, though some distance behind Honda team mate Dovizioso and Lorenzo, who were tussling for the lead.

SLID OFF

Dovizioso was right on Lorenzo's tail when he slid off into the gravel with 11 laps to go, leaving the focus on Pedrosa and Stoner's battle for second place.

The Ducati rider pressured Pedrosa over the last 12 laps but was unable to find a way through.

Frenchman Randy de Puniet came in a distant fourth ahead of Spaniard Alvaro Bautista and American Ben Spies.

The Moto2 event was marred by a mass pile-up on the first bend and won by Japan's Yuki Takahashi on a Tech 3, after race leader Andrea Iannone was forced to take a ride-through penalty for overtaking when the yellow flag was out. He finished 13th.

Swiss Thomas Luthi was second and Spaniard Julian Simon third. Spaniard Carmelo Morales needed medical treatment after a spectacular crash on the finishing line.

Spaniard Toni Elias, who finished fifth, leads Luthi by 17 points in the standings with Simon third.

In the 125cc category. Spaniard Marc Marquez, 17, became the youngest rider to register four consecutive Grand Prix wins, beating the record previously held by Valentino Rossi.

The Derbi rider came in ahead of Britain's Bradley Smith and Spaniard Pol Espargaro and climbed to the top of the world championship standings. Previous leader Nicolas Terol fell during the last lap of the race.

Kolkata fans losing interest in World Cup

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 08:08 PM

Kolkata, July 4 (IANS) With the exit of two football giants -- Brazil and Argentina -- from the World Cup, fans in Kolkata have either lost interest or have found new favourites.

Brazil and Argentina have always been overwhelming favourites in the City of Joy.

As both teams stormed their way into the quarter-finals, expectations soared high, but the enthusiasm was shortlived.

The first shock came when five-time champion Brazil lost to the Netherlands Thursday. Fans also had their hopes pinned on Diego Maradona's Argentina. But their expectations got a drubbing after Germany outplayed Argentina 4-0 Friday for a semi-final spot.

'After Brazil crashed out of the quarterfinals, the only attraction was Argentina. But everything seems to have gone haywire. Now I am least interested in this World Cup,' Tamal Das, a MBA student, told IANS.

The streets of Kolkata are still adorned with huge posters of Kaka, Robinho, Messi and Maradona. Flags of Brazil and Argentina are still fluttering atop houses, but the interest has died down.

'It was really pathetic to see the way Argentina lost to Germany,' said Saibal Roy, an engineer, who cut short his sleeping hours to see Messi in action.

The German victory has broken many hearts here.

'For me, the World Cup is over as Argentina is out of race. I think it has been proved again that great players don't always make great coaches. I won't see any more matches of this World Cup. Not even the final,' a fan wailed, sitting beside a large cutout of Maradona.

The soccer crazy city is now gunning for revenge against Germany and the Netherlands, who knocked out Argentina and Brazil. So Spain and Uraguay are the new favourites that will keep their football appetite alive.

'I am a die hard fan of Argentina but for the time being I am supporting Spain,' said Bubun Pal.

'I am banking on Uruguay. But frankly speaking I cannot think of a World Cup final without Brazil and Argentina,' says Sanjay Das, a diehard Brazil supporter.

Ali Bacher bats for video technology in football

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 07:28 PM

Johannesburg, July 4 (IANS) Former South African cricketer and administrator Ali Bacher is the latest to support the introduction of new technology in football, following a spate of referring errors during the World Cup matches.

'Its been working well for cricket, its been working well for rugby and netball but in soccer they are still debating it, I don't understand because video technology has proved to assist in terms of minimising wrong decisions,' Bacher told BuaNews Sunday.

'Teams have lost matches in the past for wrong reasons and mostly due to wrong decisions and in cricket we decided to change that,' he said, adding that video technology has been in operation in cricket for the past 18 years.

The football governing body FIFA has been facing flak for not allowing use of video replay or other new methods in case of doubtful situations which led to some wrong decisions by the referees in few matches in the World Cup.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter has promised to open a debate on the possibility of introducing video replays at football matches.

The referee at England's second-round match with Germany last week missed a clear English goal that would have tied the score 2-2. Germany went on to win the match 4-1.

Hours later, another referee awarded a goal to Argentina in which a replay later showed goal-scorer Carlos Tevez was clearly offside. Argentina went on to beat Mexico 3-1. Blatter apologised to both the teams.

Bacher said such mistakes can be avoided. 'When we decided to introduce the video replays there were obviously many mistakes and most of those mistakes involved close run outs and we had to do something about it and I don't see a reason why they can't do the same in soccer'.

Hailing the South African government for hosting the soccer World Cup, Bacher said: 'Its been terrific and a massive success in uniting the country and we have to thank our government for that.

'I have never seen them so much involved in any sporting event before...they have been there personally and they were ready to provide the money to ensure the event is a success,' he said at a press conference.

Double for Rajini, Sriskandarajah in national racing

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 07:18 PM

Chennai, July 4 (IANS) Two Chennai-based veterans, Krishnan Rajini (Red Rooster Racing) and Sriskandarajah (Moto-Rev India), completed a double apiece in the second round of the FMSCI-Sidvin National Racing Championship for two-wheelers here Sunday.

Rajini's victory in the Super Stock (600cc) class was all the more creditable since he was on a virtually ancient Yamaha R6 with a creaking suspension. As was the case Saturday in the first race, Rajini virtually destroyed the field in the second outing.

Sriskandarajah, in the Group B Experts category, though pushed all the way, drew upon his vast experience to hold back his challengers while giving another polished performance.

The two races made for come gripping viewing on a day that began rather ominously when Race Director Farhan Vohra, flipped the SUV safety car on the outlap exiting the Bridge Complex.

Fortunately, Vohra escaped virtually unhurt though the SUV suffered heavy damage as it rolled twice after one of the rear tyres exploded.

The results:

Group A Super Stock (600cc, 8 laps): Krishnan Rajini (Red Rooster Racing) 1 (14mins, 40.947secs); Harry Sylvester (Blue Arrow Racing) 2 (14:50.049); A Satish Kumar (Blue Arrow Racing) 3 (14:54.819). .

Hardup firms spend big on World Cup tickets - paper

Paraguayan fans react after their defeat to Spain in the World Cup quarterfinals, during a...

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 06:58 PM

Struggling South African state-owned firms have spent 110 million rand ($14.23 million) on World Cup tickets angering trade unions which have accused top executives of selfishness, the Sunday Times reported.

The powerful Cosatu umbrella trade union's general Secretary Zwelenzima Vavi described the purchase of hospitality tickets by the state enterprises, including South African Airways, power utility Eskom, oil company Petro SA, logistics group Transnet, and some municipalities and state departments as 'outrageous.'

Eskom, faces a possible strike this week, which could disrupt power supply during the World Cup, after unions at the power utility declined to accept a 8.5 percent pay rise for the workers and voted to start a wage strike, after reconciliatory talks between the management and unions failed.

Most state enterprises rely on government bail-outs to continue their operations.

"It's the most selfish way of spending money and it is recklessness of the worst kind," Vavi told the Sunday Times.

"We are appealing to workers to act in the national interest, when their managers are acting in the most selfish way," Vavi said.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), representing about half of Eskom's 32,000 staff, said none of its members benefitted from the hospitality tickets.

"Only the executives and their wives and their children received tickets," NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka told the newspaper.

Eskom was not immediately available for comment but Transnet's spokesman John Dludlu said his company, which defended the purchase of tickets in a recent presentation to the parliament, would not issue further comment.

South Africa Airways spokesman Fani Zulu is quoted as saying that the airline had given out 1,633 tickets in order to raise its branding.

"SAA used the hospitality packages to enhance its brand value, especially among tour operators, to enhance sales of flights tickets during the tournament," Zulu said.

Discovery of Second World War German U-boat wrecks to rewrite history books

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 06:38 PM

London, July 4(ANI): The final resting places of six German U-boats sunk in the final months of the Second World War have finally been identified.

Maritime experts said that their discoveries would force historians to re-evaluate the battle for control of the Atlantic.

Evidence from the wrecks suggests many U-boats were sunk by mines rather than attacks by Allied air and naval forces, as had previously been believed.

The discoveries came from a survey of the western English Channel and adjacent areas, undertaken by the US firm Odyssey Marine Exploration.

Dr Axel Niestle, a German U-boat historian involved in the project, said: "It is a fine example of successful teamwork between marine archaeologists and historians rewriting naval history."

"The underwater photography gave us an unparalleled opportunity to learn how different types of Second World War anti-submarine weaponry worked," The Telegraph quoted Niestle, as saying.

One submarine, the U-400, previously believed sunk by Royal Navy depth charges south of Cork in Ireland, has now been identified off the coast of north Cornwall.

The German sub was on its very first patrol in December 1944 when it hit a mine, underwater photography suggests. (ANI)

Cristiano Ronaldo becomes father, mother's identity secret

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 06:26 PM

Lisbon, July 4 (DPA) Cristiano Ronaldo has become the father of a baby boy, the Real Madrid footballer announced on his Twitter and Facebook accounts Sunday.

The message on Ronaldo's Internet pages does not name the mother, but the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha said she is a US citizen.

'It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become father to a baby boy. As agreed with the baby's mother, who prefers to have her identity kept confidential, my son will be under my exclusive guardianship,' the message read.

'No further information will be provided on this subject and I request everyone to fully respect my right to privacy (and that of the child) at least on issues as personal as these are,' Ronaldo said.

The agency representing the player, Gestifute, confirmed the news, as did 'a female friend of the family,' Correio de Manha said in its online edition.

According to the newspaper, the baby was born in the United States at the beginning of June. Ronaldo spent his summer holidays in Los Angeles and Miami last summer, it added.

The report said the player's mother, Dolores, and sisters Elma and Katia, were arranging for the necessary papers so the child could be brought to Portugal.

Ronaldo, 25, has been romantically linked to a number of women over the years, the latest being Russian swimwear model Irina Shayk.

Shayk expressed disappointment at the announcement. 'My friend has suddenly become a father,' she wrote in her Facebook account.

The news came a few days after Ronaldo and the Portuguese national team were eliminated from the World Cup in South Africa. The player had a disappointing tournament, scoring only once.

Argentina shattered as Maradona mulls future

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 06:22 PM

Argentina head home on Sunday with their World Cup dream in tatters and coach Diego Maradona lamenting the toughest day of his life as he considers whether to quit.

The South American giants didn't just lose to long-time rival Germany in the quarter-finals, they were humiliated 4-0 and it appears Maradona's reign could be over.

A third-minute goal by Thomas Mueller stunned the Argentines, putting them in an unaccustomed position, and they never recovered.

Germany turned the screw after the interval with Miroslav Klose getting two more in his 100th game and centre-back Arne Friedrich scoring his first for his country.

It was Argentina's worst World Cup defeat since they lost to the Netherlands, also 4-0, in 1974 and Maradona said he felt a deep sadness.

"The day I stopped playing football could be similar, but this sadness is really strong," said the former midfield maestro, who hung up his boots on his 37th birthday in 1997.

"It's tough because the idea was to go beyond this match and be among the four best teams and we didn't achieve that.

"We all had this hope and dream and we were just thinking about winning and the opposite happened."

As one of Argentina's most celebrated and controversial figures, on and off the field, Maradona has been through countless highs and lows, but he said yesterday's defeat was the hardest thing he had ever faced.

"I lived through this in 1982 as a player. I was a boy and didn't realise the importance of things," he said.

"Today I'm nearly 50, I'm mature and this is the toughest moment in my life. It is really like a kick in the face. I have no more energy for anything."

Maradona, who was appointed coach in November 2008 after overcoming cocaine addiction despite having little previous managerial experience, indicated that that he may quit, but that he needed time to think.

He said in his post-match press-conference that "I may leave tomorrow", but when pushed, Maradona appeared to backtrack.

"We will see what happens. I haven't thought about leaving, I have to check with my family, with the players. There are a number of things I have to consider," said the 49-year-old.

"But as coach and player, the type of football people like is this one. Touch the ball, rotate, run, Argentina can't play a different style."

Argentina is a football-mad nation and how the team is recieved on their return could determine Maradona's fate.

He is acutely aware of having let down an expectant nation.

"I am totally disappointed like everyone in Argentina," he said.

"We will go back to our country and that is difficult after losing but we will sit down and work out what happened.

"I don't think anybody can be happy with the result. We live and breathe football and no-one will be glad we lost 4-0."

While Maradona was clearly upset at losing, it was the size of the defeat that was the real surprise.

Few expected Germany to take them apart as they did, with Argentina coming into the match having won all their group games and the round of 16 clash against Mexico.

Maradona suggested that the scoreline did not tell the real story, despite Germany controlling the game.

"We studied Germany well and defined exactly who was playing where but from the first cross they got a goal and suddenly it was a different match," he said of Mueller's opener.

"We made it easy for them. They had more ideas and better control of the ball. They took advantage of the opportunities they had.

"But this does not take away from my belief that the result does not correspond with what happened on the pitch.

Pietersen out of Bangladesh series

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 06:16 PM

Kevin Pietersen was left out of England's 13-man squad announced on Sunday for their upcoming one-day series against Bangladesh because of a thigh injury.

England's selectors also chose to rest off-spinner Graeme Swann, a regular in all three international formats, following their 3-2 one-day series win over Australia completed at Lord's here yesterday where batsman Pietersen suffered his injury during a 42-run loss.

Jonathan Trott, like Pietersen born in South Africa, was called up into the squad, with off-spinner James Tredwell taking Swann's place in two like for like replacements.

Pietersen, who has now gone 16 innings without a one-day fifty after falling for a duck at Lord's, injured himself while fielding and is now due to undergo further assessment of the quadriceps strain in his left leg.

Swann meanwhile will be able to play County Championship cricket for Nottinghamshire to help him prepare for England's four-Test series against Pakistan starting in July.

Left-arm quick Ryan Sidebottom was left out of a 13-man squad after not featuring against Australia in a series where England fielded the same XI in all five matches.

England national selector Geoff Miller said: "It's unfortunate Kevin Pietersen has suffered an injury - and although we'll know the full extent in due course, it looks like he'll be able to make a full recovery very quickly.

"Graeme Swann has been involved in all forms of the game for some time now, and this forthcoming period has been identified as the best opportunity to ensure he has a suitable

break before a demanding schedule this summer and during the winter."

Former England off-spinner Miller added: "James Tredwell and Jonathan Trott have previously been involved with the England one-day set-up and will be excellent additions to the full England squad from the England Lions.

"Both have been in good form for the Lions and will relish the opportunity to make their mark in limited overs at the top level."

England, who were 3-0 up, may have lost their last two one-dayers against world champions Australia by convincing margins - they were beaten by 78 runs at The Oval on Wednesday - but Miller said the side could take heart from a series win.

"There was a lot to like about the cricket we played against Australia, and the team will be looking to build on this against Bangladesh."

England's three-match ODI series against Bangladesh starts at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

England squad:

Andrew Strauss (capt), James Anderson, Ian Bell, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Craig Kieswetter (wkt), Eoin Morgan, Ajmal Shahzad, James Tredwell, Jonathan Trott, Luke Wright, Michael Yardy.

'CWG athletes most vulnerable in transit'

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 05:52 PM

With less than 90 days left for the Commonwealth Games, a leading US-based strategic think tank has warned that athletes will be most vulnerable to terrorist attacks while in transit to and from the venues.

These experts cite the example of the Sri Lankan cricket team which was attacked by terrorists in Lahore in Pakistan on March 3, 2009 when the team was travelling by bus to the stadium. Providing security amid Delhi's chaotic traffic could prove difficult, they said.

"After the March 2009 attack on the Sri Lankans, the Indian authorities will try to secure the teams during transit, but securing travel routes is more difficult than securing hotels and venues -- especially with the heavy traffic in India.

"This means that the athletes will be slightly more vulnerable during transit than at their hotels or sporting venues. The athletes could also be vulnerable should they choose to leave the protective cordon around them," Vice- President of Tactical Intelligence, Stratfor, Scott Stewart said.

Possibly because of such fears the authorities in Delhi have already ordered markets, schools and colleges to remain shut during the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games to keep traffic on the roads to the minimum.

Besides, Stratfor said, anti-national elements may also eye malls, markets and other crowded places as 'soft targets' during the Games apart from venues and hotels.

"The Indian government has had a couple of years now to think about this event, plan for it and watch how security has been conducted at other high-profile events like the World Cup and Olympics.

"Given this tight security environment, it is possible that any militant group planning an attack would choose to go after soft targets including shopping malls, bars and clubs, or even crowds outside of the main venues waiting to enter the facility. So our assessment is that soft targets and crowds are more at risk than the athletes," he said.

Over 70 countries will participate in the mega sporting event scheduled here from October 3-14 this year. Delhi Police and Central security agencies are striving to ensure adequate security for the event, which is being hosted by the country for the first time.

14 World Cups and counting for journalist David Miller!

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 05:48 PM

Cape Town, July 4 (IANS) When a young football writer named David Miller made his World Cup debut alongside 17-year-old Brazilian wonder kid Pele, little did he know it was just the beginning of a long and eventful journey.

The year was 1958 when the world saw the emergence of Pele and Brazil lifted their maiden world title in Sweden.

Miller went on to see the rise of Pele and other football greats in his long career which is still to see its twilight and, at 77, is covering is 14th World Cup with an enviable zeal.

'My World Cup journey started on a huge high with the emergence of 17-year-old Pele. In those days I was working as a junior reporter with The Times newspaper. In fact, I took a working holiday to report for the newspaper. The games were open and free and had attacking side like France, which had Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in the tournament,' Miller told IANS.

Miller rose to become sports editor of the Times London, and a columnist for British newspaper Daily Express. He has been also been awarded the famous Jules Rimet Centenary Award in 2004, given to journalists who have covered 11 or more World Cups.

A keen sportsman, Miller played football for Portsmouth FC (3rd XI), Charterhouse, Public Schools XIs, Cambridge University and British Universities. He was also a member of the British Olympic training squad for Melbourne 1956.

Now semi-retired in Norfolk, he loves to indulge in sailing, enjoys his golf even more and is president of Old Carthusian FC, the FA Cup winners in 1881.

Recalling his experience over the last six decades, Miller said he is unhappy that matches nowadays are not absorbing as they used to be.

'It is a pity that one doesn't get to see entertaining stuff from the players of the quality of Kaka and Messi. It is not to say that the games are not interesting, they are, it's just there hasn't been a match that has been absorbing. For a person, who rarely watches football, only 50 percent of the matches were absorbing,' Miller, who has penned four books on the World Cup, told IANS in an interview here.

'The Japan and Paraguay pre-quarterfinal match was immensely tensed. Japan lost the match on penalties and neither teams deserved to lose. Penalty shoot-outs are awful and in the name of a result they create a villain. So the poor guy, who hit the bar for Japan will be remembered for the rest of life for the wrong reason.'

Asked about the most interesting incident in the World Cups he has covered, Miller said: 'It was in 1998. I must say France were lucky to win the tournament as Brazil were the favourites. But the most interesting incident took place in the final, about which we will probably never know.

'There was something wrong with Ronaldo, who was at point the World's No.1 player. The team sheet issued 40 minutes before the match showed that he was omitted and it was known that he was not fit. But strangely quarter of an hour later, another team sheet was issued that had Ronaldo's name. And in the match Ronaldo hardly did a thing and he was not the player that we knew.

'So what happened behind the scenes in the dressing room, what kind of financial pressures were there to include him in the match will never be known,' he said.

Miller says it was interesting to see Diego Maradona in a new role.

'Maradona was not picked up in 1978 because Ceaser Menotti thought he was too young for the World Cup. The first time I saw of Maradona was in 1979 when he played his first international match in Europe, a friendly against Holland. And he was a sensation and was badly marked by Johan Neeskans.

'Some say 1986 was his World Cup, but I feel Argentina were a great team in Mexico. Surely Maradona was a great inspiration but they won in Mexico because of a team effort. However, his press conferences as a coach are a shade exhibitionist,' he said.

World Cup will be best remembered for Maradona's theatrics

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 05:38 PM

Cape Town, July 4 (IANS) Had it not been for the incomparable Diego Maradona, the touch line would not have been so exciting in this World Cup.

But the curtains came down on his touchline theatrics as Argentina were swept out of the World Cup 4-0 by the German blitzkrieg Saturday night.

All through Argentina's matches, Maradona was a live wire on the sideline and his comical remarks at his press conferences and his antics with the ball kept everybody amused. His top players, like the world player of the year Lionel Messi, Gabriel Heinze and Gonzalo Higuain, were reduced to that of supporting roles to Maradona's dominating figure at the dugout that kept gesturing, gesticulating, admonishing, cursing and even perhaps wishing he was on the field as he somewhat longingly caressed the ball with his boots anytime it came to him.

As the protagonist the world saw many facets of the man known to his country as El Diego, as his autobiography is called.

If one moment, he was waving imaginary cards at the referee with ravaged wild eyes, the next moment he was found kissing and hugging his players in happy tears.

Maradona orchestrated his players like a man possessed and jumped up and down on the touchline. His silver beard and gelled black hair looked like a union between Eric Cantona and a Tasmanian Devil.

The madness of Maradona was for everybody to see.

When Messi was repeatedly fouled he would snort along the touchline with arms flailing and arguing with the assistant referee. And if a chance were missed, he would clutch his own hair in frustration.

In fact the fourth official had a tough time keeping a check on this Argentine coach.

Sifting his fingers through his rosary beads, when his team conceded a goal, and punching the air repeatedly in joy, when Argentina scored, were the images of the coach Maradona.

And when the ball rolled on to him, he could hardly control himself. A little bit of juggling, a back heel and the jabulani - the ball which was heavily criticised by him - was back on the field and the act got a huge round of applause from the fans.

Off the field, it was the old Maradona and he never minced words against his two vocal critics Brazilian legend Pele and French great and UEFA chief Michel Platini.

Maradona asked Pele to 'go back to the museum' and claimed that Platini thinks he 'is better than all the rest'.

Maradona also asked both the greats to check out if the maligned Adidas jabulani matchball for themselves to see if it was good or bad.

In this World Cup, fans expected Mardona to get at par with Brazil's Mario Zagallo and Germany Franz Beckenbauer as players who won the World Cup both as player and a coach.

But at the end Maradona suffered the fate of Argentina' other World Cup winning captain Daniel Pasarella, under whom the team made a similar exit in France 1998.

Button vows to overcome British Grand Prix jinx

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 05:18 PM

London, July 4(ANI): Reigning Formula One champion Jenson Button has vowed to break his British Grand Prix jinx, and win next Sunday's race in Silverstone.

Button, who has lined up at the grid 11 times, has never finished on the podium.

"I have never celebrated in front of my home crowd. I have never been on the podium in the British Grand Prix, but I am going to change that this year," News of The World quoted Button, as saying.

"I know this will be the best chance I have ever had of winning at Silverstone. This is the best car I've ever had for this race and I am going to take advantage of that. I won in Monaco last year and after that, the race you want to win is your home one," he added.

The 30-year-old further said that his team-mate Lewis Hamilton will be the "biggest threat" for him.

"If our car is quick enough then Lewis will be my biggest threat, but it is great for the British pubic as they have got two British drivers in a competitive car. It would be great for the British public to have a British winner so if I don't win, I hope Lewis does," Button said.

"For the championship that would not be good for me, but for the atmosphere it would be a good thing, but I am not thinking about what if I don't win. You have got to be positive and aim to be on the top step of the podium so I haven't thought about what if someone else wins," he added. (ANI)

Ex-ICC chief Ehsan Mani lashes out at PCB for ignoring Sri Lankan team attack case

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 05:08 PM

Karachi, July 4 (ANI): Former International Cricket Council (ICC) president Ehsan Mani has lashed out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for failing to submit a detail report on the terror strike on visiting Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore last year.

Mani said that the PCB is itself to be blamed for international cricket team's refusal to tour the troubled nation, and that there is no hope that teams would visit Pakistan in the near future.

"The PCB has not sent any report on the attack on the Sri Lankan team as yet to the ICC even though I know for a fact that the ICC has asked the PCB to send a report a few times," The Daily Times quoted Mani, as saying.

"Until the PCB sends this report to the ICC, I don't see international cricket returning to Pakistan with the support of the ICC and its member countries," he added.

During its executive committee meeting earlier this week, the ICC didn't allot any of its international events to Pakistan in the calendar announced until 2015 though other Asian cricket playing nation India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh would host important tournaments, including the 2011 World Cup.

Mani stressed that the PCB must take the ICC and all the member countries into its confidence and share the report of the terror attack if it wants to revive international cricket in the country.

Argentina's defeat to Germany "kick in the face": Maradona

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 04:58 PM

Cape Town, July 4(ANI): Argentina coach Diego Maradona has described the 0-4 World Cup quarterfinal defeat to Germany as the "toughest moment of my life".

The 49-year-old, however, refused to comment on speculations that he may not continue in his role as coach.

"Having so many great players, this is really like a kick in the face. This sadness is really strong. It's tough because the wish was to go beyond today and be among the four best teams in the world," News of The World quoted Maradona, as saying.I'm totally disappointed like everybody in Argentina. Coming back home after losing is difficult for anyone wearing the Argentina colours. Am I leaving? We will see what happens. I have to check that with my family, with my players. There's a number of things I have to consider," he added.

He also believes that if someone does replace him as the coach, that person will follow Argentina's attacking style of play.

"I realize that as coach and as a player, the type of football people like is this one. Argentina is a country where we live and breathe football. No one is going to like that we lose 4-0," Maradona said.I don't think Argentina can play a different style. I believe whoever comes after me will follow this path. This is the way the Argentina people like," he added.

Miroslav Klose scored twice as Germany went through to the World Cup semi-finals with the victory at the Green Point Stadium.

Maradona's men were no match for a German team, who now have a great chance of making it through to next Sunday's final in Johannesburg. (ANI)

Armstrong organised a team bonding party attended by strippers: Landis

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 04:42 PM

Sydney, Jul 2 (ANI): The three-week Tour de France race was rocked with more controversy involving seven-time champion Lance Armstrong, with claims of personal nature being made against him by former teammate Floyd Landis.

Landis, who was stripped of his 2006 Tour title for failing a dope test and who recently admitted lying about drug use while accusing Armstrong and a number of other cyclists of cheating, told the Wall Street Journal that Armstrong organised a team bonding party attended by strippers at which cocaine was used.

Armstrong's lawyer in a statement has denied these new claims, and Armstrong himself has recently said that Landis is a habitual liar who had no credibility.he newspaper article elaborates on alleged doping practices by Armstrong, his teammates and their coterie of trainers and medical staff - from alleged blood doping to the sale of brand new bikes for cash to fund the doping system that Landis claims was in place at their team that was then sponsored by US Postal Services.

It also describes a night out with the Tour champion and a number of riders in 2001 when Landis was in Armstrong's hometown of Austin, Texas during a training camp after he had been offered a contract to race for Armstrong's team, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

According to Landis, the evening began when Armstrong drove several riders into downtown Austin. Through Landis' observations, the article reports that Armstrong sped while driving and said he paid little attention to stop signs.

The article then describes how the group attended the Yellow Rose nightclub in north Austin. The club was a venue that, according to its manager, Don King, has been a popular haunt for Armstrong and a number of cyclists for about 10 years.

Landis, who publicly made doping allegations against Armstrong during the Tour of California, said he was surprised by the party, but not offended.

Armstrong denied Landis' accusation when they first came out in May. "I have nothing to hide," Armstrong said. I think history speaks for itself here. Floyd lost his credibility a long time ago. We have a person who has been under oath several times with a completely different version, written a book with a completely different version, someone that took money." (ANI)

Dhoni stumped, weds childhood friend tonight

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 04:22 PM

Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will tie the knot with childhood friend Sakshi Singh Rawat in a hush-hush ceremony at a farmhouse about 40km from Dehradun on Sunday night.

The 28-year-old wicket-keeper batsman got engaged to Sakshi, a 23-year-old hotel management student, at a private ceremony last night.

The wedding is also expected to be a private affair with only very close family members and friends, including Dhoni's teammates Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra, among those attending.

BCCI bigwigs including President Shashank Manohar are also expected to attend the wedding.

Although family sources had indicated after the engagement that the marriage will take place in October, India's tight schedule in the next few months might have prompted the preponement.

Despite being a private ceremony, the wedding will have its share of glamour as Dhoni's Bollywood friend John Abraham is reportedly here to attend the marriage.

The couple is expected to host a reception in Mumbai on July 7, which also happens to be Dhoni's 29th birthday.

Dhoni and Sakshi, who hails from Aurangabad, had been school friends at DAV, Shamily in Ranchi.

"Their fathers worked together in MECON, and the Rawats moved to Dehradun after retirement," a family friend said.

The Indian captain is currently enjoying a rare break from international cricket and will be next seen in action during a three-Test series against Sri Lanka scheduled to begin from July 18 at Galle.

Dhoni, who made his international debut against Bangladesh in December 2004, has so far played 43 Tests, 166 ODIs and 25 T20s.

Under his captaincy, India won the 2007 ICC World Cup Twenty20, CB Series of 2007-08, and the Border-Gavaskar trophy 2008 beating Australia 2-0.

He also captained Chennai Super Kings to victory in this year's Indian Premier League. He is now captain of India in all three forms of the game, leading the team to its first ever bilateral ODI series wins in Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Under his leadership, India attained the number one status in Test cricket and became number two this year in ODI rankings.

Dhoni has also been the recipient of ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2008 and 2009 (the first Indian to achieve this feat). He was bestowed the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award and the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour in 2009.

A top police official told PTI that Dhoni arrived early this morning at the farmhouse, where adequate police force has been deployed.

"We have been requested by the family members that the wedding should be totally a private affair," said the police official.

"We understand that the wedding is tonight," the official added.

Germany in raptures as team go blazing on

Germany players celebrate a goal by Arne Friedrich during the 2010 World Cup quarter-final soccer...

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 04:18 PM

German newspapers predicted a World Cup triumph and poured scorn on coach Diego Maradona as "an over-the-hill gunfighter" after Argentina were ruthlessly dispatched 4-0 in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Saturday's win over Maradona's Argentina in Cape Town came less than a week after Joachim Loew's Germany team had equally clinically ended England's hopes 4-1 in the second round.

The latest resounding victory sent the normally hypercritical German media -- and its public -- into raptures on Sunday.

"Thanks, you heroes!" wrote Bild am Sonntag newspaper. "Unbelievable! Germany beats Argentina 4-0. Four to Zero!"

Bild am Sonntag's normally difficult-to-please columnist Guenter Netzer, the former international, could hardly contain himself.

"It was more than a victory, it was a demonstration of 'Uebermacht' (superiority)," wrote Netzer, now a popular TV pundit. "It was one of the best performances from a Germany team that I've ever seen."

Netzer admitted he was wrong with his earlier public doubts about Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski. "I never would have thought they would have played such a strong World Cup."

Former Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann, who led the team to third place in 2006 and is now a TV analyst, was also full of praise for the team and his successor, Joachim Loew.

"The team seems to have a lot of fun and that's the base for attractive football -- and Jogi (Loew) is doing an awesome job," Klinsmann told Reuters.

SURGE OF PATRIOTISM

Millions of fans have packed public viewing venues and were given credit by Loew for helping motivate the team. More than 350,000 watched on giant screens set up in central Berlin.

Dropping their normal reluctance towards flag waving, German fans have wrapped themselves in their black, red and gold flags and celebrated with an unprecedented level of patriotism.

"Deutschland einig Zauberland" (Germany united Magic Land) wrote the Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

"The 4-0 win over Argentina wasn't only due to Germany's dominance on the pitch but also due to Loew's superior tactics," wrote the newspaper's columnist Thomas Hummel.

"Diego Maradona looked like an over-the-hill gunfighter in a Western film.

"Maradona was a bundle of nerves before the match, hugging some of the players as if someone in their family had just died.

"The over-the-top show of emotions might not have led to Germany getting the early goal but it may have helped. The Germans by contrast seemed to be calm and collected from the start."

Other newspapers expressed surprise at the team's strength.

"A dream team," wrote the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. "All of Germany is going berserk over these incredible lopsided victories over England and now Argentina.

"Anyone who three weeks ago would have predicted a 4-1 win over England and then a 4-0 destruction of Argentina would have been ridiculed as a hopelessly naive football novice. Loew's team proved against Argentina they are world-class."

Welt am Sonntag said Germany must be a top favourite now.

"The title is within our grasp," wrote Welt am Sonntag columnist Stefan Frommann. "With courage and strength the German footballers were knocking on the gates to heaven. The happy ending for the midsummer fairy tale is getting closer.

"We discovered the 'We-are-Germany' feeling four years ago thanks to Juergen Klinsmann. And thanks to his successor Joachim Loew we're rediscovering our love for football all over again.

"The team is soaking up the 'We-are-Germany' feeling from the fan miles in Germany and using that energy on the pitch."

Frommann noted that Germany's 20-year-old striker Thomas Mueller was one of the millions of fans who watched Germany's good run four years ago from a public viewing fan mile.

Randhawa tied fourth at French Open golf

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 03:58 PM

Versailles, July 4 (IANS) Jyoti Randhawa stayed in contention at the Open De France with a one-under 70 for a tied fourth place and two shots off the lead at the end of the third round Saturday.

Randhawa, with a total of seven-under 206, is looking for his maiden European Tour win that would also win him a berth into the British Open in less than two weeks time, dropped two late bogeys on the 15th and 17th to fall two shots behind the leader, Martin Kaymer of Germany, who had an even par-71.

Spaniard Alejandro Canizares, who at one stage went to 12-under, had two late double bogeys and dropped to eight-under with a 73 and shares the second place with Englishman Steve Webster (70).

Six players, Randhawa, Robert Jan Derksen ((72), Francesco Molinari (68), Damien McGrane (67), Luke Donald (67) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (68) share the fourth spot.

'Those two late bogeys were a disappointment. I think I was playing well, but even the slightest of mistakes can prove costly,' said Randhawa, who has had a disappointing season before this event.

Collina takes on UEFA role, backs extra assistants

Former FIFA soccer referee Pierluigi Collina of Italy smiles before the seventh

Published Sun, Jul 04 10 03:38 PM

Former top referee Pierluigi Collina wants to continue an experiment with goalline assistants rather than use technology when he takes control of UEFA officials.

The 50-year-old, one of soccer's most famous referees with his bald head and menacing stare, has left his job as head of Italian officials to take up a similar role organising referees for European competitions.

"I've decided to leave my role because I have received an important offer from UEFA," Collina, who retired from refereeing in 2005, told reporters.

Incidents at the World Cup including England's Frank Lampard having a shot cross the line not awarded as a goal have forced soccer authorities to reconsider the idea of using technology to clear up controversial decisions.

UEFA tested placing extra official on each goalline in last season's Europa League to check for infringements in the area and whether the ball crossed the line.

Collina backs that plan rather than a goalline camera or an electronic chip inside the ball.

"People have said that in last season's Europa League there were no controversial calls but I think it is exactly because of the extra officials in the area," he said.

"I think that some of the shock cases seen in the World Cup would have been avoided."

Marcello Nicchi, the new head of Italian referees, has said he supports the use of technology.

Seven trophies stolen from FIFA's office in South Africa

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 02:38 PM

London, Jul 4 (ANI): Thieves have stolen seven replica World Cup trophies from FIFA's South Africa headquarter, which is near the venue for the World Cup final.

The miniature gold- plated cups, worth around 100 pounds each, were snatched from a store cupboard at FIFA's base in Johannesburg.

South Africa's police commissioner Bheki Cele said the theft of the seven trophies and several jerseys at the Soccer City complex in Johannesburg appeared to be an inside job.

"We are looking into it. The suspects are people who are very familiar with the environment," said Cele.

A FIFA spokesman told journalists he was unaware of the incident. "I am not aware of that," said Wolfgang Eichler at FIFA's daily World Cup briefing. (ANI)
