ICC suspends Pak tainted trio provisionally

Fri, Sep 03 10 10:51 AM

London, Sep 3 (PTI) In an unprecedented crackdown to restore the game''s credibility, ICC today charged and suspended Pakistan''s tainted trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer under its anti-corruption code in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal. The International Cricket Council said the three players have been notified officially of the offences they are alleged to have committed and have been provisionally suspended pending a decision on the charges. "In accordance with the provisions of the code, this means they are immediately barred from participating in all cricket and related activities until the case has been concluded," ICC said in a statement. Pakistan, however, continued to defend the players and sought to give a new twist to the sordid episode by suggesting that an Indian bookmaker could be behind the "conspiracy". "I found that all these three players were absolutely innocent. They were not involved, they have been taken for a ride and the agent (Mazhar Majeed) was the culprit, in the sense that he was responsible for defrauding some Asian bookies," Pakistan High Commissioner to Britain Hassan said. "The British press says Asian but if they were from Pakistan they (British media) would have called Pakistanis, which means some Indian bookies were involved in it. This Majeed allegedly defrauded these Indian bookies and so the newspaper investigated this sort of sting operation through their sources here," he said. The ICC, however, said the players, who are due to appear before the Scotland Yard today for interrogation, "have a right to contest the provisional suspension and a further opportunity to defend these charges at a full hearing before an independent Anti-Corruption Tribunal in accordance with Article 5 of the code." The players have 14 days from their receipt of the charge sheet to indicate their desire for a hearing, the sport''s governing body said. ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said, "We will not tolerate corruption in cricket. We must be decisive with such matters and if proven, these offences carry serious penalties up to a life ban. "The ICC will do everything possible to keep such conduct out of the game and we will stop at nothing to protect the sport''s integrity. While we believe the problem is not widespread, we must always be vigilant." .

Top New Zealand golfer reveals affair with Japanese

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 10:37 AM

Wellington, Sep 3 (DPA) New Zealand's top golfer David Smail, who has been married for 25 years, revealed Friday that he had an affair with a Japanese woman but said he was no Tiger Woods.

Smail, 40, told the Waikato Times, Hamilton, that the woman, Sato Kurihara, 27, threatened his life and her own when he repeatedly tried to end the affair, which he said was his only extra-marital dalliance.

His wife, Sheree, who received a phone call from Kurihara last week telling her about the affair and threatening to ruin their marriage, said she would stand by her husband.

The Smails told their story after Kurihara sent intimate images of the couple to the paper, claiming she had 'about 2,000' pictures and a sex tape to support her story. Smail denied that she had 2,000 pictures.

The paper said Kurihara described the golfer, who has been a successful player on the Japanese circuit for 13 years, as New Zealand's version of serial adulterer Tiger Woods. Smail insisted that he had only one affair.

Smail, who said that Kurihara was aware he had a wife and two children in New Zealand, said he ended the relationship 'for good' three weeks ago.

'I've made a terrible mistake and had a relationship and that was unacceptable,' he said. 'I'm just really sorry to my family and friends. 'If I had my time again, I'd change everything.'

Smail alleged that his former lover was stalking him and said he was taking legal action against her.

His wife vowed to stick with her husband. 'If you love someone so much, you can't just stop loving them straight away, you just can't,' she said.

Pak defends tainted trio, hints at Indian hand in fixing saga

Fri, Sep 03 10 10:07 AM

London, Sep 3 (PTI) Pakistan High Commissioner to Britain Wajid S Hassan today gave a new twist to the spot-fixing scandal involving the Pakistan cricket team, saying the three accused players were "innocent" and Indian bookmakers were involved in the whole murky episode. "I found that all these three players were absolutely innocent. They were not involved, they have been taken for a ride and the agent (Mazhar Majeed) was the culprit, in the sense that he was responsible for defrauding some Asian bookies," Hassan said. "The British press says Asian but if they were from Pakistan they (British media) would have called Pakistanis, which means some Indian bookies were involved in it. This Majeed allegedly defrauded these Indian bookies and so the newspaper investigated this sort of sting operation through their sources here," he told NDTV. Hassan''s statement came even as the International Cricket Council had charged the three players -- Test captain Salman Butt and pacers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer -- with corruption offences and provisionally suspended them from all forms of the game pending a decision on the charges. Succumbing to all round pressure, Pakistan had yesterday dropped the tainted trio from the ODI series against England scandal but strongly defended them and vowed full support. Refusing to accept that the three players were dropped in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal, the Pakistan High Commissioner had said the trio had opted out. "They are extremely disturbed with what has happened in the past one week. They have maintained that they are innocent and on account of the mental torture that has hugely affected them, they are not in the right frame of mind to play any further," Hassan had said. "Therefore, they have requested the Pakistan Cricket Board not to consider them for the rest of the matches until their names are cleared," he added. Hassan had also raised serious doubts on the authenticity of the News of the World''s expose, saying, "What is the reputation of those people who have brought us this story?" In an interview on BBC television, Hassan had said, "We are not seeing on the video what the date is or what the time is." "Do you have answers to these questions? The video wasn''t timed or dated. It could have been filmed before or after the match, or at a different time." PTI SSC

The World's Highest-Paid Tennis Players

The World's Highest-Paid Tennis Players

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 08:57 AM

Kurt Badenhausen, Forbes.com

Male and female athletes typically play for vastly different sums of money in their respective sports. Michelle Wie pocketed $337,500 for her second career LPGA victory last weekend, while Matt Kuchar's paycheck was $1.35 million for claiming the Barclays men's golf event on Sunday. The best-paid players in the WNBA make $100,000 per season on the court, while men's salaries can reach $23 million.

Tennis is different though. The men's and women's US Open champion will each earn $1.7 million for the title. The US Open has paid equal prize money the past 38 years, but credit Venus Williams who fought for equal pay at Wimbledon which finally acquiesced in 2007 as did the French Open.

Celebrity 100: The Athletes

Pound Frowns As Bank Of England Squelches Rate-Hike Speculation

Where Americans Spend The Most

Our look at the highest-paid tennis players typifies this kind of equality in the game. Half of the top 10 are men, and half are women. Leading the pack is Roger Federer who is light years ahead of anyone else thanks to his longtime dominance on the court and 10 lucrative sponsorship deals with the likes of Nike, Wilson, Gillette and Mercedes-Benz. The world's No. 2 ranked player earned $43 million by our count over the past 12 months.

Several of these athletes showed up on our lists of the highest-paid athletes and female athletes this summer. In all cases for incomes we include: prize money, endorsements, exhibitions and appearance fees over the past 12 months without taxes or agent's fees deducted.

As US Open play kicks off play this week a few headliners will be on the sidelines including Serena Williams (No. 4 on our list with $20 million) and Justine Henin (not on the list) who have won a combined 22 Grand Slam singles titles. The favorite in their absence is Kim Clijsters who captured last year's title after a two year retirement where she gave birth to a daughter.

Maria Sharapova will also be there, seeded 14th. And while she's no longer a favorite to win the Open, when it comes to money, she's already champion, hauling in $24.5 million over the last year thanks to rich sponsors like Nike, Prince, and Tiffany, making her the second-highest paid player in tennis and the best-paid female athlete in the world.

Sharapova inked an eight-year contract extension with Nike this year that could be worth as much as $70 million thanks to royalties from her own tennis line and a line of bags and shoes through Nike subsidiary Cole-Haan.

The men's side is missing last year's champ Juan Martin del Potro. The men's tourney still features the sport's two heavyweights Roger Federer and Roger Nadal who have captured 20 of the past 22 Grand Slams. Nadal overtook Federer this year on the court as the top-ranked player but financially Federer earns twice as much as his rival.

There was a time when Federer was an underappreciated champion who played with a below-market value Nike deal and had little cachet in the U.S. which affected his endorsements. Those days are over. Despite his recent on-court problems, Federer is widely celebrated as one of the greatest players to ever swing a racket. He re-signed with Nike in 2008 for a 10-year that is the most lucrative endorsement deal in tennis worth more than $10 million annually.

Nadal pulled in $21 million over the past year with $5.6 million in prize money and the rest from endorsements and appearance fees. He ranks No. 3 on our list. Nadal's biggest endorsement deal is with Nike, which has tried to make money on Nadal by moving him out of his customary clamdiggers and sleeveless shirts. Nadal has adjusted to his new threads as he's racked up five tourney wins this year and captured the top ranking after struggling with injuries in 2009. Nadal also counts Kia Motor, Babolat and several Spanish companies as sponsors.

One player always trying new things with her apparel line is Venus Williams who earned $15 million over the past year, good for No. 5 on our list. Her history of apparel sponsors has included Puma, Nike, Reebok and her own Eleven brand. Her latest deal is with Polo Ralph Lauren where the two will produce a co-branded dress for sale on-site at the Open. If successful, the relationship could blossom into something more permanent.

The shoe and apparel deal is almost always the largest endorsement for the top players in tennis. The value of these deals can rise dramatically based on bonuses for tournaments won and year-end rankings. As in most sports Nike is the king in tennis when it comes to signing the best (and most expensive) talent. It has deals with our four highest-paid athletes who have combined for 40 Grand Slam singles titles.

Argentina planning England match next year - agent

Fri, Sep 03 10 08:17 AM

Big soccer rivals Argentina and England could play a friendly on Feb. 9, 2011, the man charged with organising the South American team's international calendar said on Thursday.

"In February we have a match with England. It hasn't been decided yet where (it will be played) and Denmark came up as a possible venue," Guillermo Tofoni, a FIFA agent who sets up friendlies for Argentina, told Reuters.

"Questions of protocol between the two associations still have to be done but the match could go ahead."

Argentina and England have a rich and controversial past, especially at World Cups. In their last match, a friendly in Geneva in 2005, the English came from behind to win 3-2.

Tofoni said Argentina also had a scheduled tour of the United States from March 24-28 but did not reveal who they would meet there.

Argentina face world champions Spain at the River Plate stadium in Buenos Aires next Tuesday in their second match since being knocked out by Germany in their World Cup quarter-final in July.

They beat Ireland 1-0 in Dublin last month under interim coach Sergio Batista who took over from Diego Maradona and could be ratified in the post later this year. Maradona did not have his contract renewed after the South Africa finals.

Argentina play further friendlies this year against Japan in Tokyo on Oct. 8 and arch-rivals Brazil in Qatar on Nov. 17.

All calm on U.S. Open courts as storms close in

Kim Clijsters of Belgium hits a backhand to Sally Peers of Australia during the U.S....

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 07:57 AM

A year ago, Kim Clijsters was the mom hogging the spotlight at the U.S. Open. This time it is Mother Nature.

Unrelenting heat and swirling winds has transformed the last grand slam of the year into a battle against the elements and now Hurricane Earl is approaching New York, threatening to dump on the city that never sleeps.

It is little wonder then that the top players were in such a rush to get off the courts as quickly as possible on Thursday, battering their lower-ranked opponents as swiftly and ruthlessly as the wacky weather at Flushing Meadows.

For the second time this week, Roger Federer cruised to victory in straight sets inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. His 6-3 6-4 6-3 victim was Germany's Andreas Beck.

It was all over in one hour 41 minutes and even the Swiss master himself was impressed.

"It's the perfect start," he said. "I played Monday, had two days off. I had another easy one physically today, and here I am in the third round feeling like I'm completely in the tournament."

Russia's Maria Sharapova was also in a hurry, trampling Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-1 6-2, but neither of the former champions could keep pace with Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, the runner-up to Clijsters 12 months ago.

Wozniacki needed just 47 minutes to breeze past Chang Kai-chen of Taiwan 6-0 6-0 and will face Sharapova in the fourth round if they both win their next matches.

Russia's Vera Zvonareva, a finalist at Wimbledon this year, and Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer, semi-finalist at the U.S. Open last season, also raced to straight-sets wins on another steamy day when the Extreme Weather Policy was invoked as temperatures climbed past 91 degrees Fahrenheit (33 Celsius).

Serbia's Jelena Jankovic, the fourth seed, survived after being pushed to a third set in her win over Mirjana Lucic.

Russian sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko spent little time on the sun-baked court but only because he was hammered 6-3 6-4 6-2 by Frenchman Richard Gasquet. He had been troubled by injury but said his real problems may be in his mind.

"I don't know if it's my wrist or my head," he said. "I don't know if I need to have a coach, a mental coach or if I need to go somewhere to change my brain.

EARLY EXITS

The casualty rate among the seeds in the first four days of the championship has been almost as brutal as the baking heat with 20 making early exits, including four more Thursday.

Aravane Rezai and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez were knocked out of the women's draw while Croatia's Marin Cilic, the men's 11th seed, was upset by Japan's Kei Nishikori 5-7 7-6 3-6 7-6 6-1 in one of the few matches that went the distance.

For Federer, it was all just business as usual. He did not repeat the magical between-the-legs trick shot he played in his opening match but still went through most of his repertoire as he prepares for the tougher matches that lie ahead.

If he maintains his early form throughout the fortnight, a 17th grand slam title could be his.

"Tougher matches will only be coming up now, I guess," Federer said. "It's gonna be interesting to see how the Saturday conditions are going to be with the hurricane sort of moving in. We'll see how that goes."

Sweden's two-time French Open finalist Robin Soderling is looming in the quarter-finals for Federer after he outgunned one of the biggest servers in men's tennis, beating American Taylor Dent 6-2 6-2 6-4.

Wozniacki is looming as the favorite to win her first grand slam title after a flawless start to the tournament.

Promoted to top seed after world number one Serena Williams withdrew with a foot injury, Wozniacki won three lead-up tournaments and has carried her form into the U.S. Open.

"When you're winning, you have that confidence," she said. "You go out on the court and you know what to do. You're in your own bubble. That's what I'm aiming for."

America's latest sweetheart gunning for Sharapova

Beatrice Capra of the U.S. serves against Aravane Rezai of France at the U.S. Open...

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 07:37 AM

A year after her surprise exit from the U.S. Open, Maria Sharapova will have another showdown with a little-known American teenager who will be battling for her own share of the Flushing Meadows spotlight.

Last year a then 17-year-old Melanie Oudin eliminated the Russian in the third round and won the hearts of the partisan crowd before falling in the second round earlier this week.

This year, American 18-year-old Beatrice Capra will look to send the New York crowd into a frenzy when she faces Sharapova in their third-round matchup.

Capra, whose parents are Italian, earned the matchup with Sharapova after a 7-5 2-6 6-3 upset of 18th seed Aravane Rezai of France earlier on Thursday.

Having won through the USTA's playoff competition to get a wildcard into the main draw, world number 371 Capra has been making waves and said she cannot wait to have a crack at a player she looked up to when she was a young girl.

"I think it will be an amazing experience ... I know she's just such a tough competitor," Capra told reporters.

"When I was younger I used to always look up to her so I think it will be a really good match for me to see where I am compared to that kind of level."

Oudin was nicknamed "Little Miss Upset" by the American media for her run to the quarter-finals last year and Capra said she plans to bug her compatriot for tips on how to play Sharapova.

Capra said seeing what Oudin had achieved in 2009 had been a massive boost to her and the other rising American players.

"It was really inspiring to me because I played her a year before and then she was getting to the quarters of a grand slam," she said. "It was just unbelievable. I think she's pushed all of the Americans to do better."

Sharapova joins charge of easy centre court winners

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 07:17 AM

Maria Sharapova joined a stampede of easy centre court winners at the U.S. Open on Thursday when the former champion trampled Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-1 6-2 to reach the third round.

The 2006 Open winner did not face a single break point in her demolition of 68th-ranked Benesova who contributed 26 unforced errors to her own demise.

Wearing a black and blue ensemble, the 14th-seeded Sharapova bruised the Czech's defense with 16 winners, including three aces.

The Russian, who followed women's top seed Caroline Wozniacki and five-time U.S. men's winner Roger Federer with an easy straight-sets win on centre court, will next play American wildcard Beatrice Capra, who upset 18th seed Aravane Rezai of France.

Police search for Cabanas shooter in Colombia

Fri, Sep 03 10 06:57 AM

Colombian police are searching for a Mexican fugitive wanted for the shooting in January of Paraguay soccer player Salvador Cabanas, a senior officer said on Thursday.

Finding Jose Jorge "JJ" Balderas, whom a drugs lord captured in Mexico this week identified as the shooter, was a priority, Judicial Police chief Carlos Mena said.

Cabanas, who had been set to go to the World Cup in South Africa with the Paraguay team in June, was shot in the head in a Mexico City bar, according to some reports during an argument over his form for local first division club America.

The forward, who survived the attack but still has the bullet lodged in his brain, was moved from a Mexico City hospital after a month to a Buenos Aires clinic where he is now an out-patient to be closer to Paraguay.

"According to information we have received from the Mexican authorities, this person has links to the captured narcotics trafficker Edgar Valdez, alias 'La Barbie', who identifies him as the perpetrator of having gravely injured the Paraguayan footballer Salvador Cabanas," Mena told reporters.

"We have in our possession the red circular against this person issued by Interpol Mexico."

Mena added that Balderas was accused of attempted homicide and warned he was violent and extremely dangerous.

Sweden's Soderling fends off Dent for easy win

Robin Soderling of Sweden hits a return against Taylor Dent of the U.S. at the...

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 06:37 AM

Sweden's Robin Soderling held his ground against one of the biggest servers in men's tennis on Thursday, beating American Taylor Dent 6-2 6-2 6-4 to reach the third round of the U.S. Open.

Soderling, a finalist at the last two French Opens, showed no ill-effects after his gruelling five-set win in the first round over Austrian qualifier Andreas Haider-Maurer as he slugged it out with the big-serving American.

"He's a dangerous player, especially on faster surfaces like this," said Soderling said. "But I was really happy with the way I played and to beat him in straight sets shows that I'm playing good."

Dent smashed nine aces past the fifth-seeded Swede but Soderling responded with 14 of his own to wrap up a one-sided victory in just 91 minutes.

Having reached the French Open final in each of the past two years, Soderling said he believes he is capable of beating anybody on his day.

But despite being the number five seed, he said he did not feel any more pressure to succeed.

"I played so many grand slams and so many tournaments so I know what I did in previous tournaments doesn't really matter," he said. "I'm pretty confident. I know that I can do well when I play well but no one can play well every match.

Soderling is seeded to face Roger Federer in the quarter-finals, a repeat of last year's last-eight encounter in New York that the Swiss master won in four sets.

His next opponent, though, is the tall Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker and Soderling said he is taking nothing for granted.

"We actually played earlier this year on clay (in Barcelona, with Soderling winning 6-1 6-4)," he said.

"He's a good player. He can hit very well from both sides and has a good serve. He is a dangerous player, especially on hard courts, so it's not going to be easy."

Beaten Davydenko planning radical action

Nikolay Davydenko of Russia serves against Richard Gasquet of France during their match at the...

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 06:17 AM

Russian sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko said he had thrown all his rackets in the bin and was considering going "somewhere to get my brain changed" after he was upended at the U.S. Open on Thursday.

The Masters Cup champion became the highest seed to fall in the men's event when he was thrashed 6-3 6-4 6-2 by Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the second round.

The usually consistent Davydenko was all at sea from the start and world number 38 Gasquet did not even have to play his best to clinch victory and a place in the last 32.

Davydenko said he had tried everything he could to improve but nothing worked.

"My serve was OK but my return was completely nowhere," he told reporters. "I destroyed myself. I had no confidence.

"I changed all my rackets every set and it didn't work. After the U.S. Open I will completely change my rackets. I just now threw all my old rackets into the garbage."

Davydenko missed 11 weeks earlier this year after breaking his left wrist and has only won back-to-back matches once since returning in June.

Reports that his wife, Irina, could replace his brother Eduard as his coach were "a joke", but he said he might need an even more radical approach to find his form.

"I don't know if it's my wrist or my head," he said. "I don't know if I need to have a coach, a mental coach or if I need to go somewhere to change my brain.

"My wife knows much about tennis because she has travelled with me for seven years, sitting with my brother in the box.

"So she can tell me a few things, but not like completely coaching, coming every day to the court. It's better she go shopping in New York. She's not so stupid to come on the court."

Gasquet will now play Brazilian 26th seed Thomaz Bellucci or South African Kevin Anderson for a place in the fourth round.

Last year's U.S. Open was just Gasquet's second event back after a two-year ban for taking cocaine was rescinded by a tribunal, who accepted his explanation that the substance had entered his system through a kiss in a nightclub with a woman.

Training day

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 05:47 AM

Tugging at the shoulder straps, he pulls down the traditional blue singlet to his waist in one quick motion, without breaking the stare from his reflection in the cracked mirror. The early morning sores don't show to the naked eye, only the beefed up, set-in-stone muscles. Narcissistically, the eyes stop drooping as he smiles at the product, his upper torso.

It's six in the morning and the sun's rays have barely begun to filter through the blanket of smog in the outskirts of India's capital. But like all hazy sunrises in the past few months, Sushil Kumar is locked inside a tiny room of a gymnasium, readying himself for the first step of his day-long ritual: getting inspired. For Sushil and thirty other wrestlers preparing for the Commonwealth Games at the SAI Centre in Sonepat, it's training day.

Crunching his biceps and flexing the lats below his arms, Sushil takes his first mental step into the zone, a place he visits everyday. Crouching at the knees without taking his eyes off the mirror, he picks up a pair of 5 kg dumbbells, strategically placed by Arvinder Pal Singh, Team India's trainer. Swiveling both iron rods in oscillatory motions around an invisible path of a sleeping 'eight' (or infinity), Sushil draws every straw of energy to kick his body back into action. He treats his reflection as an imaginary opponent, mentally pinning the image down to a foot-lock.

Although he is currently running on empty, Sushil knows how quickly his body responds to pressure and intensity. His life-size poster adorning the back wall of the room is a result of those two factors ? pressure and intensity. "Sabaash bolo," he screams while nearing the end of a set. The thud of the dumbbells hitting the padded floor is drowned by Sushil's groans, before the trainer steps forward to stretch and massage the overworked muscles.

The late-comers stroll into the room at a quarter to seven. By that time though, Sushil is more than just warmed up; he is raring to go, prancing around like a wild animal. The junior wrestlers touch his moving feet for blessings, while the shy ones just bow to the wall hanging: Sushil clasping a bronze medal in the Beijing Olympics. For the men in tights, life is all about aspiration, and tradition.

7:30 am If you ever want to know the real worth of an Olympic medal, then just ask the people staying on the campus. Sonepat's world and its subsequent eco-system flipped around for good after Sushil stood on the podium two years back. "Nothing has been the same since," says Yashveer, India's assistant coach, while watching the grapplers spar at the massive six-mat training centre. Along with head coach Jasminder Singh and Vladimir from Georgia, Yashveer nurtures India's current and future fighting stars. "Facilities came very late in the day for this centre. I cannot even start explaining how different things are. Today, we have foreign mats covering this floor, but just a couple of years back, we had nothing. Sonepat was a punishment centre for coaches. There were 54 of us here and no wards or buildings. Just one room covered with a tin roof. After our morning chai, we used to go on long walks, in a queue," he says, blowing his whistle to constrict the wrestlers into his regimen. Sushil, though, continues to fight, both against the whistle and his heavier opponent. "If you have to be someone special, then you got to do something special," Sushil says, defying the coach's code. The 66kg category grappler follows his own routine, one that consists of training with breaks. The two-hour-long sparring ends just before 10 am and the wrestlers return to their rooms. Not Sushil though, he is now busy sparring with a lower weight category opponent. Just like an antelope, Sushil locks horns with fellow hostelers, checking his various moves all the way back to the ground-floor room.

11 am Sushil's eyelids grow heavy as he watches repeats of prime-time soap operas on a 14-inch television screen placed on a parapet. Special privileges, apparently. "Yeh aurat bahut khatarnaak hai," Sushil says to his brother and full-time caretaker Amarjeet, as he points at the vamp in the serial. Amarjeet nods without noticing, busy grounding badaam (almonds) and milk together with a neem stump. It's breakfast time. A large glass of the aromatic concoction, followed first by a whey protein shake, then finally by rotis and fresh vegetables transports him to his siesta, a necessity before the evening session. The recently installed air-conditioners fasten the process. "A good sleep means a good evening session. It is crucial because if they are groggy in the evening, a crucial workout is ruined."

5:20 pm Alarm clocks go off in unison, waking the wrestlers up. But even before Sushil can look at the world around him with half-open eyelids, abdominal crunches are automatically triggered off in bed. Tirelessly, he follows it up with push-ups and pull-ups against a rod in the dormitory, even as saas-bahu programmes blare in the background. The wind flaps against his 'cauliflower ears' after a few rounds of a patchy grass field, which terminates at the main hall of the gymnasium.

Standing in the middle of a large, state-of-the-art structure that includes every compound machine a toned physique could crave for, Sushil and the rest wait for Vladimir's whistle. As a local radio station hums out romantic Bollywood songs, the wrestlers are a picture of concentration. "We don't require cardio music to train. Those who want to train can do so under any circumstances," says Sushil, before lining up with his colleagues to begin their intense workout. With each whistle, Sushil shifts to the right of him, fighting the next obstacle fearlessly. An hour or so of 'maximum weight training' (the heaviest weight the machine has to offer) later, the 5'4" Sushil now resembles a pocket Hercules.

Back in his dwelling at half past seven, the neem branch doubles up as the tool for wrist curls. Sushil constantly tangles and untangles the suspended 10kg iron disc in cycles, to-and-fro his knotted fists. The other wrestlers cool off by watching him. If you have to be someone special, then you got to do something special. The sun has set deep beneath the training centre at SAI, but as he wraps up his warm-downs, Sushil knows that the next day awaits him with a greater ferocity.

9:30 pm Well versed with Sushil's daily routine, Amarjeet opens the creaky room door ajar with patience, knowing that the slightest sound will wake his famous brother up. Although he doesn't need to look, the mirror on the open steel door of the cupboard reflects Sushil's sleeping state to the outside world. It's a 'do-not-disturb' equivalent. As the mirror stares at Sushil, his brother puts an end to the day's ten hour routine by switching off the tube lights. In a few hours, it will restart with Sushil staring right back.

Greco-Roman style

Primarily use their upper-body strength. In this style, wrestlers are not allowed to use their legs (i.e. tripping), and nor are they allowed to grab their opponents' legs. This method continues to be a male-only discipline.

Freestyle is a full-body wrestling style. A wrestler of this discipline uses their own legs for an advantage and also inhibits their opponent's legs for holds and break-downs. Upper- body strength is most crucial to this style. Women's freestyle wrestling became an Olympic event in the summer of 2004.

Three tainted Pakistani cricketers suspended by ICC

London, Sep 3 (IANS) The three Pakistani cricketers, who are at the centre of an alleged betting scam, were provisionally suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) Thursday night after being charged under the anti-corruption code.

After a day that began with the Pakistan Cricket Board agreeing to omit the players from the team for the rest of the England tour, and the Pakistan high commissioner saying the newspaper claims were a 'set-up', the ICC suspended the three pending a tribunal, The Guardian reported.

Outside the west London hotel in which the tainted trio -- Test captain Salman Butt and pacers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer -- are also staying, ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat provided the swift action.

'We will not tolerate corruption in cricket - simple as that. We must be decisive with such matters and, if proven, these offences carry serious penalties up to a life ban,' he was quoted as saying by the paper.

'The ICC will do everything possible to keep such conduct out of the game and we will stop at nothing to protect the sport's integrity. While we believe the problem is not widespread, we must always be vigilant. It is important, however, that we do not pre-judge the guilt of these three players. That is for the independent tribunal alone to decide.'

Under tougher new rules brought in last year by the ICC, the players can be suspended provisionally ahead of any hearing if it is in the interests of the game.

The row was triggered by allegations in the News of the World that the three had agreed to bowl no-balls in specific overs of last week's fourth Test at Lord's in return for money.

The charges were announced after officials from the ICC's anti-corruption and security unit (ACSU) spent the afternoon at Scotland Yard viewing evidence and seeking police go-ahead. The police are conducting a parallel criminal inquiry.

The three players will Friday be interviewed under police caution for the first time. Earlier they had agreed to withdraw from the rest of the tour citing the 'mental torture' they had been placed under by the allegations. They protested their innocence and the Pakistani high commissioner suggested they might have been 'set up' by the News of the World.

ICC investigators, who had been examining spot-fixing allegations against Pakistan for some time, have been in London since Monday. Sir Ronnie Flanagan, the former Northern Ireland police chief who was appointed chairman of the ACSU three months ago, arrived from Abu Dhabi to join them, while its chief investigator, Ravi Sawani, met police.

But despite withdrawing the players from the tour, following pressure behind the scenes from the England and Wales Cricket Board and the sport's global governing body, the Pakistan camp remained bullish.

Pakistan's High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan claimed the players had been 'set up' by the News of the World. Asked if they had been framed, he answered 'yes' and suggested the newspaper's video evidence could have been filmed after the contentious no-balls had been bowled.

The News of the World said it 'refuses to respond to such ludicrous allegations'. The newspaper is understood to be preparing further revelations for Sunday.

Serbia meet Croatia after beating Argentina

Serbia's Nenad Krstic (L) shoots against Argentina's Carlos Delfino during their FIBA World Championship game...

Fri, Sep 03 10 04:57 AM

The World Championship first knockout round is poised to produce a pair of classics after Serbia beat Argentina 84-82 in an enthralling Group A match on Thursday to set up a meeting with Balkan neighbours Croatia.

There will also be no love lost when the Argentines clash in the last 16 with traditional rivals Brazil, who finished ahead of the Croats in Group B after beating them 92-74.

The United States made it five wins in a row in the same group with a 92-57 drubbing of Tunisia and should have an equally straightforward task against Angola.

Serbia forward Dusko Savanovic was the team's trump card against Argentina, coming off the bench to score 19 points including a crucial three-pointer with 18 seconds left.

Playmaker Milos Teodosic added 16 and four assists and captain Nenad Krstic had 18 and eight rebounds, the trio doing enough to outmuscle Argentina's unstoppable centre Luis Scola who finished with a game-high 32 points and seven rebounds.

"We have beaten one of the world's top teams and this victory has given us a tremendous confidence boost ahead of the knockout rounds," Savanovic said.

Croatia, devoid of a podium finish since winning the 1995 European Championship bronze medal, were swept aside by a fast-flowing Brazilian team.

Marcelo Machado led the winners with 18 points and fellow guard Leandro Barbosa added 17 as the Brazilians nailed an impressive tally of 10 three-pointers from 19 attempts.

Holders Spain take on Greece after 19 points apiece from centre Fran Vasquez and guard Rudy Fernandez steered them to an 89-67 rout of Canada while hosts Turkey, 87-40 winners over China, play France for a berth in the quarter-finals.

Despite their drubbing, the Chinese squeezed into the last 16 on a superior three-way points differential after Ivory Coast beat Puerto Rico 88-79, leaving all three sides on one win and four defeats in Group C.

KRZYZEWSKI WARY

Tournament favourites the U.S. are looking for their first World Championship gold medal since 1994 and although they cruised through the preliminary stage, their coach Mike Krzyzewski was determined to root out any complacency.

"A coach would tell you there is slipping up when you have a lot of games and we have to take care of slipping up, meaning that we have to be ready for Angola because it's one and done and if you don't win you can't win the tournament," he said.

"A great runner might come in second or third in qualifying because he wants to have his best time in a final race and in coaching the U.S. team I sometimes feel like it's the Tour de France; you are expected to win every stage."

Russia beat Greece 73-69 on the back of 18 points by centre Timofey Mozgov and their reward is a meeting with underdogs New Zealand, who stunned France 82-70 thanks to 25 points from outstanding guard Kirk Penney.

Slovenia, aiming for their first medal in any major event, beat Iran 65-60 to set up an intriguing clash with Australia, whose guard Derrick Mills led them to a 76-55 victory over Angola with 11 points, three rebounds and as many assists.

Dark horses Lithuania, missing several regulars through injury, finished top of Group D with five wins out of five after beating Lebanon 84-66 and will be strong favourites against China to advance into the last eight.

ICC charges three Pakistan players

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 03:57 AM

The International Cricket Council (ICC) charged Pakistan test captain Salman Butt and opening bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif on Thursday under its anti-corruption code.

The sport's world governing body said in a statement that the trio had been provisionally suspended from all forms of cricket and related activities until the case was concluded.

Pakistan withdrew Butt, Amir and Asif from their one-day team earlier on Thursday.

Police confiscated the three players' mobile phones after allegations in a British newspaper that they taken bribes to fix incidents in the final test against England at Lord's last week.

The players have 14 days from receipt of the charges to ask for a hearing before an independent anti-corruption tribunal.

"We will not tolerate corruption in cricket -- simple as that," ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said in the statement.

"We must be decisive with such matters and if proven, these offences carry serious penalties up to a life ban.

"It is important, however, that we do not pre-judge the guilt of these three players. That is for the independent tribunal alone to decide.'

DRAMATIC DAY

The announcement came at the end of a dramatic day which began with tour manager Yawad Saeed telling reporters before the start of a warmup game against Somerset that the three players had been withdrawn from the one-day series against England.

The trio then attended a meeting at the high commission in London at which they protested their innocence.

Pakistan High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan told reporters the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had decided to pull them out of the remainder of the tour because of the "mental torture" they had undergone.

However, a source within the Pakistan team told Reuters the ICC had put pressure on the PCB to drop the players while they were under investigation and the England and Wales Cricket Board also lobbied to have them removed.

The London Metropolitan police have been working with the anti-corruption unit after a report in The News of the World newspaper which alleged that Amir and Asif had bowled deliberate no-balls by pre-arrangement in the fourth test against England.

A 35-year-old man arrested as a result of the police investigation on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers was released on police bail.

Nice and easy does it for top seed Wozniacki

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark hits a return against Chang Kai-Chen of Taiwan during the U.S....

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 03:17 AM

Nice and easy works fine for top seed Caroline Wozniacki, who said on Thursday she is happy with her smooth ride through the first two rounds at the U.S. Open where a potential match-up with Maria Sharapova looms.

The 20-year-old Dane, runner-up in Flushing Meadows last year, made easy work of her first two opponents and has dropped just two games in the year's last grand slam.

But despite the lack of a challenge, she considers herself tournament tough and shot down a notion she might not be ready for a possible fourth-round showdown against Sharapova, the U.S. champion in 2006.

"I've played tough matches in the previous weeks. I've been playing really great tennis. I'm feeling good, so no worries," Wozniacki said after blanking unseeded Chang Kai-chen of Taiwan 6-0 6-0 to reach the third round. "For me it's just about winning and getting through to the next rounds."

Wozniacki has been red-hot in recent months, posting a 16-1 record since Wimbledon with titles in Copenhagen, Montreal and New Haven.

Chang, 19, said she had never been beaten love-love on the professional level but was not embarrassed by the drubbing and would use it as a learning experience.

"It's like playing against a wall," said Chang. "She is a very consistent player. She doesn't give you any points or mistakes. Yeah, she is a wall."

Wozniacki had only seven winners but wore down her opponent with her unerring groundstrokes while waiting for Chang to misfire. The Taiwanese complied with 26 unforced errors.

"I don't give any free points away," said the world number two. "I think that's one of my strengths."

The Dane's next opponent will be 77th-ranked Chan Yung-jan, another player from Taiwan.

Wozniacki, aiming for her first grand slam title and a $1 million bonus that would come with it since she won this summer's U.S. Open Series standings, said she was feeling fresh, confident and eager for the upcoming challenges.

"When you're winning, you have that confidence. You go out on the court and you know what to do. You're in your own bubble," she said. "That's what I'm aiming for."

ICC charges tainted Pakistan players under its corruption code

Fri, Sep 03 10 02:57 AM

London, Sept 2 (PTI) International Cricket Council tonight charged three tainted Pakistan players under its anti-corruption code in the wake of the match-fixing scandal that has stunned cricket world. A statement issued by ICC confirmed that Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir have been charged with "various offences under the ICC Anti-Corruption Code for Players and Player Support Personnel relating to alleged irregular behaviour during, and in relation to, the fourth Test between England and Pakistan at Lord''s last month", the Cricinfo reported. It said the trio have been officially notified of the offences they are alleged to have committed and have been provisionally suspended pending a decision on those charges. In accordance with the provisions of the code, this means they are immediately barred from participating in all cricket and related activities until the case has been concluded. "The players have a right to contest this provisional suspension and a further opportunity to defend these charges at a full hearing before an independent Anti-Corruption Tribunal in accordance with Article 5 of the code. The players have 14 days from their receipt of the charge sheet to indicate their desire for a hearing," the statement said. "We will not tolerate corruption in cricket," ICC''s Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said, adding that "we must be decisive with such matters and if proven, these offences carry serious penalties up to a life ban." "The ICC will do everything possible to keep such conduct out of the game and we will stop at nothing to protect the sport''s integrity. While we believe the problem is not widespread, we must always be vigilant. "It is important, however, that we do not pre-judge the guilt of these three players. That is for the independent tribunal alone to decide," he said. The alleged offences against Pakistani players, if proved, would involve the imposition of a ban on them. There is also a possibility, at the discretion of the independent tribunal, that a fine would be imposed in addition to a ban. PTI ZH

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 02:17 AM

Russian sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko became the highest seed to fall at this year's U.S. Open when he was thrashed 6-3 6-4 6-2 by Frenchman Richard Gasquet on Thursday.

The Masters Cup champion was outplayed throughout by an inspired performance from world number 38 Gasquet, who clinched victory in one hour 53 minutes.

Davydenko, still struggling for top form after missing 11 weeks earlier this year because of a broken left wrist, could not handle the power and variety of the Frenchman's game.

Last year's U.S. Open was just Gasquet's second event back after a two-year ban for taking cocaine was rescinded by a tribunal, who accepted his explanation that the substance had entered his system through a kiss in a nightclub with a woman.

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 01:37 AM

Former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova produced a far stronger second performance at Flushing Meadows with a routine 6-2 6-3 win over Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova on Thursday.

Kuznetsova had been taken the distance in her previous match against Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm, but the Russian's biggest challenge against a nervy Sevastova was the heat.

The pair had met just once before, perhaps appropriately at the same stage of the same tournament last year when Kuznetsova won in straight sets.

Thursday's match did not set pulses racing, which was made all the more apparent by the raft of empty blue seats at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Sevastova looked overawed by the enormity of the venue and the occasion as she stepped out on court and was in danger of losing her opening service game.

But against the run of play, she held on and broke the subsequent Kuznetsova serve to move into a 2-1 lead.

That was her last lead of the match as number 11 seed Kuznetsova, U.S. Open winner in 2004 and a finalist in 2007, mixed up her play nicely and showed she might be turning into a genuine contender for the title in New York.

Hushovd takes sprint victory in Spain after tough climb

Cervelo Test team rider Thor Hushovd of Norway waves after the sixth stage of the...

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 01:27 AM

Norwegian sprinter Thor Hushovd hung on during a tough climb before pipping the other riders in a bunch sprint to win stage six of the Tour of Spain on Thursday.

After successfully tackling the steep slopes and perilous descent of the Cresta del Gallo climb with 17 kilometres to go, the Cervelo rider then used his power to beat Italy's Daniele Bennati and Slovenian Grega Bole in a 69-rider bunch sprint.

Philippe Gilbert of Belgium retained the overall lead after finishing sixth in the 151-km stage from Caravaca de la Cruz to Murcia.

Hushovd said Thursday's win was as much due to his climbing well as it was to his better-known sprinting abilities.

"I hung on and hung on close to the front end of the bunch for at least two thirds of the climb," the Norwegian national champion told reporters.

"I dropped back around 25 places in the last part but the hard work had been done. When I saw Bennati had got over the climb, too, I thought: 'he's the man to watch in the finale.'

"But it turned out I had the better legs for the sprint, too."

Twice a winner of the Tour de France points classification, Hushovd was sick in the last part of this year's Tour and said his initial objective in Spain was "to regain my race condition".

He rejected trying to win the Tour of Spain's points classification, which he already won in 2006, with his trademark tactic of scooping up points with early attacks on mountain stages.

"There will be no sneaking into breaks for me," Hushovd said. "Another stage win at most would be great."

As aggressive as ever, race leader Gilbert broke off the front on the dangerous descent from the Cresta del Gallo with Italian Filippo Pozzato, then attacked again in the bunch sprint.

"The first breakaway was a bit unexpected, a couple of other guys couldn't descend so well so I found myself out in front by chance," he said.

"Then in the bunch sprint, there were only a few top sprinters there, so I thought: why not?"

The Tour of Spain finishes in Madrid on Sept. 19.

Kapil asks ICC to ensure Pakistan cricket is not damaged

Fri, Sep 03 10 12:57 AM

Karachi, Sept 2 (PTI) India''s former captain Kapil Dev has asked the International Cricket Council and its member countries to ensure that Pakistan cricket is not damaged badly by the spot betting scam currently under probe in England. Kapil told Geo Super channel today that Pakistan cricket was an important part of international cricket and the ICC and its member nations needed to sit down and put their heads together to find out ways to ensure Pakistan cricket was not hurt permanently by the fixing scandal. "The ICC is the sport''s world body and its duty is to ensure that its rules and regulations are also followed properly and they need to see how to avoid such situations in future," he said. Kapil said that as a cricketer he was ashamed with the latest scandal and the way the image of cricket was being hurt but instead of criticism concrete steps were required to educate future generation of cricketers. "Everybody makes mistakes but you can''t hang them, you need to reform them and make them aware about the pitfalls of mixing with undesirable characters. There is a dire need to educate these cricketers. "We need to work together to save this great sport. This scandal has obviously hurt cricket and understandably the people who support cricketers and the game are also angry but we need to work jointly to win back their confidence. "Our young players must be educated and Pakistan cricket needs support. They have already suffered because of the security issues in their country," he said. Kapil, who led India to the 1983 World Cup title win, also felt that only one man could dig Pakistan cricket out of its current state of controversies and problems. "I think this is the time for Imran Khan to come in to Pakistan cricket and set things right. He is the most honest cricketer from Pakistan and he played with lot of heart. He is one of the most respected cricketers in Pakistan," Kapil said. "I would love to see him come in and head the cricket board and work with the cricketers. I think he is the right man to take Pakistan cricket out if its current crisis. I know he is a busy man and politician now but he is the best man to lead Pakistan cricket," he added.

London, Sep 2 (PTI) The three Pakistani cricketers at the centre of spot-fixing allegations will be questioned by the Scotland Yard detectives tomorrow. This emerged after the tainted trio Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir were forced to withdraw from the one-day series against England in the face of intense pressure from the England and Wales Cricket Board and the ICC. Their withdrawal was only secured after a round of intense negotiations on Wednesday night between the Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman and the ECB and the ICC, the Telegraph reported. Meanwhile, Pakistan High Commissioner Wajid S Hasan said, "I think we will go to the court of law to defend the players".

Jeev laments poor putting at Omega European Masters

Published>Fri, Sep 03 10 12:19 AM

Crans Montana (Switzerland), Sep 2 (IANS) Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh rued a cold putter as he fired a one-under-par 70 in the opening round of the Omega European Masters Thursday. He was tied 53rd with Jyoti Randhawa (71).

Among the other Indians C. Muniyappa, making his debut in the co-sanctioned Asian Tour and European Tour event, enjoyed a flying start with an outward 32 but dropped three shots coming home to settle for a level par 71. He was tied 69th.

Three other Indians Gaganjeet Bhullar, S.S.P. Chowrasia and Anirban Lahiri shot 73 each to be tied 102nd and Shiv Kapur (74) was 120th. They will need to shoot low numbers to make the weekend cut.

Matteo Manassero, the 17 year old former British Amateur Champion, starred on the opening day of the Omega European Masters to take a one shot lead.

The teenager, who admitted to drawing inspiration from Edoardo Molinari's Gleneagles victory and Ryder Cup call-up, matched the lowest round of his short professional career by grabbing seven birdies for a seven under par 64.

He leads England's Graeme Storm and Finn Mikko Ilonen by one.

Jeev, the Asian Tour's number one in 2006 and 2008, failed to take advantage of perfect scoring conditions at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, trading two birdies against a lone bogey on his last hole.

'I was really disappointed with the way I played. I hit the ball really well but couldn't hole anything. It was summed up at the last hole, making a bogey with sandwedge in the hand,' he said Singh.

After battling with injuries in the past 18 months, a fit-again Jeev has shown signs of regaining his best form but admitted it was a challenge to get all departments working in his game.

'It's tough. It's been a tough year and half and I'm trying to get out of it. I just can't get everything together in the game. You have to hole putts. I'm trying to get everything going in a day,' he said.

'I just need to work hard and get sharper. It's there for the taking. There are a lot of birdies out there. You just have to go out and grind it out. You've got to make a lot of up and downs. I'm going to work on my putting now,' said Jeev, who trails early leader Manassero by six shots.

Muniyappa, the reigning Hero Honda Indian Open champion, charged to the top of the leaderboard with five birdies against two bogeys in his first nine holes but ran out of gas.

'I putted badly on the back nine. I three putted the first and second holes (his 10th and 11th holes) and after that, my putting feel was gone. I couldn't judge the pace. I hit the ball nicely, it was all down to the putting. It was disappointing,' said Muniyappa.

Since arriving for his maiden trip the renowned Swiss skiing resort town, Muniyappa has been in awe of the sights of the snow-capped mountains, which are visible from almost every corner of the golf course.

'The location is very good. It's my first time here and when I first got here, I thought that this was a superb venue. Conditions were really good for scoring today, there was no wind at all. You can easily shoot four or five under. I didn't hit the ball well at the start of the year but it's slowly coming back,' he said.

Shiv Kapur carded a 74 while Bangladesh's Siddikur, winner of the Brunei Open, started strongly with a 70.

Lisicki, playing only her fourth match since March because of an ankle injury, was outplayed in the first set as Zvonareva hit a series of winners on both wings.

The German found her form in the second set and served for it at 5-4 but Zvonareva broke back immediately and then pinched the tiebreak 7-5 to reach the last 32.

I was not approached by any bookie: Ganguly

Thu, Sep 02 10 10:51 PM

Kolkata, Sep 2 (PTI) Sourav Ganguly today said he had never been approached by any bookie during his stint as Indian captain, even as the world cricket is rocked by ''spot-fixing'' involving Pakistani cricketers. "Three former India captains -- Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble -- too were never approached and such a situation was beyond their imagination," Ganguly told a TV channel. Urging the cricketers to be responsible, Ganguly said the International Cricket Council (ICC) was not a policing body and could not have a constant watch on the players. "ICC is not a police station, it has some set of laws. If those are violated, they will take action. Nothing is foolproof," the 38-year-old said. Referring to the ''spot-fixing'' scam, Ganguly said "In our playing days, we could hardly believe such a thing. During my captaincy, betting issue used to figure in the discussions with Tendulkar, Dravid, Kumble and me. But nobody could dare approach us. "May be they (the bookies) judge players by their characters before making the move. I can never in my life believe that this may happen. The captain and his boys have a role to play, they must act responsibly," Ganguly said. He further said those found guilty in the spot-fixing'' scandal should be "heavily punished". Without naming the accused -- Pakistan Test skipper Salman Butt and pacer duo of Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aami -- the left-hander said," we should wait for the outcome." "The guilty should be heavily punished. These are all allegations, there is no proof yet. We should not make comments," he said. "Not just Pakistan is involved. I hear players from Australia and Bangladesh have been approached. It boils down to the players, it''s their as well as captain''s responsibilty. They are playing as an individual, they should take responsiblity," Ganguly said. Pakistan''s Test skipper Butt and pacers Asif and Aamir are facing a Scotland Yard investigation over their alleged involvement in a betting scam "exposed" by a British tabloid''s sting operation.

Coaches support five-refs experiment, say UEFA

Published>Thu, Sep 02 10 10:17 PM

Europe's leading coaches are in favour of the experiment with two extra linesmen behind the goals and prefer it to the use of goal-line technology, UEFA said on Thursday.

However, they are less enthusiastic about changing the away goals rule used in European club competition, even though some feel it encourages teams to play defensively at home rather than attack when they are away.

The new refereeing system, which features one extra linesman behind each goal, was first tried in the Europa League last season and has been extended to the Champions League and the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

UEFA president Michel Platini is one of the most vociferous supporters of the experiment which is being carried out in other competitions worldwide over the next two years before FIFA decides whether to implement it on a permanent basis.

"They're very positive about this experiment," UEFA's technical director Andy Roxburgh told reporters after a two-day meeting of some of Europe's leading coaches at UEFA headquarters including Pep Guardiola, Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Claude Puel and Felix Magath.

"They're very much aware of the problems of going down the technology route and, like Platini, they would like to keep it human if possible, so this experiment with the additional referees allows us to do that."

"The additional refs sometimes do not always look very active but they are very active because they are in constant touch with the referee," added Roxburgh.

"This role is new so it's something which has to be nurtured and developed and it will evolve.

"There's also the deterrent effect, if there's eyes behind the line there might not be so much pulling in the penalty box or simulation."

The five referees failed one test last week when officials at the Tottenham v Young Boys Champions League qualifier missed an obvious handball by Jermain Defoe before he scored a Spurs goal.

"There's no 100 percent guarantee but this is an attempt to make it better, to minimise mistakes," said the former Scotland manager.

Roxburgh said coaches had shown little enthusiasm for changing the away goals rule.

"We raised the question that, after 40 years, is it something that should be reviewed because some teams seem to think now that a 0-0 at home is a good result because they didn't lose an away goal, so has the balanced changed a bit?

"But they think that after 40 years, it's well established, part of the game and we should leave it.

"However, they were questioning whether we should have the away goals rule in extra-time," he added.

Hope to keep up my form to help SA win World Cup: de Villiers

Thu, Sep 02 10 10:07 PM

Dubai, Sep 2 (PTI) Number one one-day batsman AB de Villiers of South Africa wants to carry his red-hot form to the Indian subcontinent to help his team win the Cricket World Cup next year. AB de Villiers recently rose to the top of the ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen and was nominated for various awards at this year''s LG ICC Awards. "It''s obviously a great privilege for me to have made the number-one spot. I''ve worked hard in the last two seasons to be able to gain that top spot. "I have to say I am pretty chuffed though and I do hope I can keep up my form and take it into the coming season and onto the biggest ODI event, the ICC Cricket World Cup next year where I want to help take my team to the top," the 26-year-old told ICC Cricket World audio show. The right-handed batsman has been nominated this year for three LG ICC awards ICC Cricketer of the Year, ICC ODI Player of the Year and the inaugural LG People''s Choice Award with the latter being the one he is most excited about. "It''s great to have been nominated for the LG People''s Choice Award and to see that the public want to be able to show their appreciation towards my cricket is fantastic. It would obviously be one of the greatest awards to win but just to have been nominated as one of the five is for me a fantastic achievement," he said. The 50 overs Cricket World Cup will be held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in February-March next year.

Accused Pakistan trio to miss one-day series

Pakistani cricketer Salman Butt (C), arrives at the Pakistan High Commission in London September 2,...

Test captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif will miss Pakistan's one-day series against England after pressure from the English and international governing bodies.

Pakistan High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan told reporters in London that the trio had asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to withdraw them because of the "mental torture" they had undergone following media allegations of spot-fixing.

A source in the Pakistan side told Reuters separately on Thursday that the International Cricket Council (ICC) had advised PCB chairman Ijaz Butt to drop the trio while they were under investigation.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has also lobbied the PCB to omit the three players for the seven-match one-day series which starts with a Twenty20 game in Cardiff on Sunday.

"They said they are extremely disturbed at what has happened," Hasan told a media scrum after meeting the players. "They mentioned that they are entirely innocent."

Hasan said he believed in the players' innocence and added Pakistan could take legal action to defend them.

British police confiscated the three players' mobile phones following allegations of corruption in a British newspaper. They were accused of taking bribes to fix incidents in the fourth test against England which finished at Lord's last Sunday.

PERFECT DAY

The news emerged while a one-day warmup match between Pakistan and Somerset was being played on a perfect summer's day in the west England town of Taunton.

A small group of Pakistan fans gave their team vociferous support and expressed anger at what they said was the readiness of the British media to condemn the entire team.

"If they are guilty then they should be punished," Beenish Faridi told Reuters. "But these are allegations only and you can't blame the whole team. The whole team is suffering because of this."

Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed told reporters that the three players would be replaced after the two Twenty20 matches in Cardiff.

"The T20 squad for two games will remain as it is here this morning, this means 13 people. For the one-day internationals subsequently we will be asking for replacements to make up the squad of 16 again," he said

ECB chairman Giles Clarke said the board welcomed the decision.

"As chairman of the ICC's (International Cricket Council) Pakistan task team I look forward to working with Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board and everyone involved in taking forward cricket in Pakistan," Clarke said in a statement read to reporters.

Clarke has called for an ICC team to visit Pakistan, which has not hosted international cricket since militant gunmen attacked the Sri Lanka team bus in March last year.

Delay is the way India prepare: Australian Games CWG chief

Thu, Sep 02 10 09:21 PM

Melbourne, Sep 2 (PTI) The world should not be worried about Indian organisers'' race against time to complete venues for the Commonwealth Games as delays are part of Indian way of preparations, Australia''s Commonwealth Games chef de mission Steve Moneghetti said today. The overlays work is yet to complete at many venues as heavy monsoon rains played havoc with the work, pushing back the deadlines further. But Moneghetti was full of optimism, saying there will be a unique spin to it and everything will be in order soon. "People ask me ''oh, they''re way behind'' -- that''s the Indian way. Probably from a western culture they might be, but in India that is way they do things. "They''re actually going fine from an Indian perspective, it''s just internationally that we''re all worried. It will have a quite unique spin on it and that will make it a really cultural experience," Moneghetti said. Moneghetti, a former Commonwealth Games champion marathon runner, urged the Australia CWG Association to embrace the multi-sports event scheduled for October 3-14. "I think it''s brave of the Commonwealth Games -- you have got to go. It''s the Commonwealth Games, it''s not four nations. There are 71 countries represented in the Commonwealth and we need to embrace that," he said. Moneghetti said athletes should travel to India without any fear and enjoy there. "For most countries that go, it''s not about winning medals, it''s about being a welcome part of the Commonwealth and enjoying that cultural experience. "So to have them in India, it''s just fantastic. Rather than close in or be scared and that ''we''re losing the Commonwealth brand,'' we are actually taking it out and exposing it to another part of the world, which is a fantastic thing," PTI AT PDS

'Fixing' allegations ruining cricket, says Watson

Published>Thu, Sep 02 10 09:17 PM

Sydney, Sep 2(ANI): Australian all-rounder Shane Watson reckons that the 'spot-fixing' and 'match-fixing' allegations that have rocked the cricket world, are "ruining the game".

"What happened during the Sydney Test, which is one of the most special moments of my career . . . to have that talked about being tainted is very sad, and most probably for the people at the game as well," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Watson, as saying.

"People start to think that emotion I had that day was fabricated," he added.

He further urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to make its investigations over the Lord's Test 'spot-fixing' scandal public for transparency.

"These are the reasons the ICC has to really step in and totally get on top of this. They've known these things could have been going on, that's why the anti-corruption unit was set up, they've waited for a newspaper to bring it to light," Watson said.

"There's no doubt when things change in a game, people will start thinking: 'Is that just how the game panned out or is it because people might have been paid in different ways to change the direction of the game?'"

"I'm more sad than anything. One thing we definitely don't need is what's going on, because it is horrific for the game," he added

Watson and other Australian cricketers including Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee have said that suspected bookmakers had approached them during last year's tour of England.

On the other hand, the Pakistan team is in the midst of a betting scam, where fast bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif are alleged to have bowled pre-arranged no-balls in the Lord's Test, which England won by an innings and 225 runs.

British tabloid The News of the World has claimed that the cricketers were part of a 150,000-pound betting scam with London-based agent Mazhar Majeed. (ANI)

Pietersen may face disciplinary action over Twitter outburst despite apology

Published>Thu, Sep 02 10 09:07 PM

London, Sep 2(ANI): England batsman Kevin Pietersen could face disciplinary charges for tweeting about his omission despite his apology.

National selector Geoff Miller however said that the star batsman might escape punishment, as he has claimed that the post was a mistake.

"I'll talk to KP and if he wants to apologize or thinks there is a need to apologize then so be it - I will certainly explain to him what my feelings are," The Telegraph quoted Miller, as saying.

"It sounds like it might have been an accident, but not something you'd want to see and perhaps should be banned. I don't see where the word accident comes into it."

"Writing columns in newspapers or whatever leaves a player open to making questionable statements and I see this twitter in the same boat. I'm not for it I must admit," he added.

Pietersen had broken England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) rules on Tuesday when he reacted to being dropped from the ODI side by labeling the decision a "f*** up".

He hastily withdrew the posting on the controversial social networking site, but not before England bosses had been informed of his furious reaction.

The 30-year-old insisted that he never intended to make the message public, claiming that he had been trying to send a private message to a friend.

"It came out in a way I obviously didn't want it to come out. The Twitter thing was a direct message. As anyone who is on Twitter knows, you can send direct messages to your friends, or whoever's following you," Pietersen said.

"So, I must apologize that it ended up in the public domain and also apologize for the language I used. I would never, ever swear on Twitter when going out into the public domain, so this is a big apology, and now it's a case of looking forward what is going to be an exciting couple of weeks. It was just a mistake," he added. (ANI)
