I'm no Messi says Bayern's Robben after hat-trick

Published>Sun, Apr 18 10 10:10 AM

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben refused to be compared with Argentine forward Lionel Messi after scoring a hat-trick in his team's 7-0 demolition of Hanover 96 on Saturday.

The Dutchman, who has been the driving force behind the Bundesliga leader's chase of three titles, even scored an almost identical goal to Messi, chipping the ball while at full speed over the Hanover keeper for Bayern's second of the afternoon.

Barcelona's Messi had done it against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals earlier this month when he netted all four of his team's goals.

"Of course Messi is better," Robben, who has scored 14 league goals this season, told Sky Television.

"I can only improve. There are other great players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Didier Drogba but Messi is up there alone. He is just in a class of his own," he said with a smile.

Robben has not been less spectacular though since joining Bayern in the summer from Real Madrid, steering the Germans to the Champions League last four with stunning goals, including an eye-popping volley against Manchester United in the quarter-finals. Bayern are also in the German Cup final.

Hanover coach Mirko Slomka said: "It is just an amazing quality. No matter how many videos you watch to prepare for him, when he plays like that, it just does not matter."

Robben insisted all his performance did was to prepare his team well for the first leg of their Champions League semi-finals against Olympique Lyon on Wednesday.

"It gives us confidence because it was the first game in our final stretch of games in this season and it was a good beginning. But Wednesday is a completely different game," the 26 year-old said.

Should they advance he could be in for a meeting with Messi, whose Barcelona face Inter Milan in the other semi-final.

Awesome Nadal sets up showdown with Verdasco

Rafael Nadal of Spain smiles during his semi-final match against his compatriot David Ferrer in...

Published>Sun, Apr 18 10 09:30 AM

Rafael Nadal left no doubt that he would be the overwhelming favourite at next month's French Open after crushing Spanish compatriot David Ferrer 6-2 6-3 in the Monte Carlo Masters semi-finals on Saturday.

World number 12 and fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco will be the last man standing in Nadal's way to a record sixth consecutive title in the glitzy principality after he demolished top seed Novak Djokovic 6-2 6-2.

Four-times French Open champion Nadal, who has not won an ATP title in the last 11 months, was again in a class of his own on the Monte Carlo clay.

After needing just 75 minutes to dismiss Ferrer, Nadal took the time to sign a few balls and fire them into the delighted crowd as the first sunbeams pierced through on a mostly cloudy day at the Monte Carlo Country Club.

"I am playing very well," Nadal told reporters.

"The last two games, I was a little bit more nervous than usual because I lost two semi-finals in a row, in Indian Wells and Miami. But for the rest, I played a very complete match."

The Mallorcan, who had an unbeaten record at the French Open until his shock fourth round defeat last year, lost the first game on Saturday to love.

He then saved a break point in the second game before turning on the engine and racing to a 5-1 lead, with Ferrer unable to control his opponent's devastating forehand.

Nadal even seemed to feel sorry for Ferrer, apologising to his compatriot after clinching the sixth game with a delightful backhand lob.

Grunting in agony, Ferrer won the seventh game to love but conceded the opening set as he sent a backhand long.

The 11th seed smashed his racket on to his foot twice in frustration after he failed to capitalise on a rare moment of weakness by Nadal in the second game of the second set.

LOUD ROAR

Ferrer triggered a loud roar from the full capacity crowd when he broke back for 2-2, but the feat took too much out of the world number 17.

As the clock ticked on to the hour, Nadal reclaimed his advantage with a jaw-dropping forehand winner down the line. Ferrer flagged at that point, serving a couple of double faults in the seventh game to give the claycourt master a 5-2 lead.

In his final throes of agony, Ferrer pulled a break back but bowed out on his own serve, netting a routine forehand on the second match point.

Nadal gave his opponent a quick round of applause after throwing his headband into the stands where flamboyant former Renault Formula One team boss Flavio Briatore was sitting.

Briatore also witnessed Djokovic's demolition by Verdasco.

The Serb, who was hoping for a re-run of last year's final against Nadal, was completely outplayed from the baseline in a one-sided contest.

"I made his win much easier because I made so many unforced errors," said Djokovic. "But on the positive side, it's a semi-final.

"After the performances I had in Miami and Indian Wells, this is great. I have to consider this as a success and move on," added the world number two who had won just two matches in total at the last two Masters events.

Verdasco did not even have to try too hard, taking full advantage of Djokovic's error-riddled game. The Spaniard, who has a miserable 0-9 record against Nadal, broke twice in the opening set when Djokovic double faulted and netted a backhand.

The Serb looked to be back in the contest when he broke back for 2-2 in the second set as Verdasco skied a backhand into the stands, but his hopes were quickly dashed.

A superb crosscourt backhand winner gave Verdasco another break and the world number 12 never looked back, setting up the first all Spanish final in Monte Carlo since 2002, when Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Carlos Moya.

"The best surface to play him (Nadal) would be grass or hardcourt," Verdasco said as he looked forward to his first Masters final.

"But it will here on clay and I cannot change that. I will try and handle this as best as I can. I will take my chances although he does not give many chances on this surface."

Injury ends Wozniacki's Charleston title bid

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark cries after falling and spraining her ankle during play against Vera...

Published Sun, Apr 18 10 09:10 AM

Caroline Wozniacki's bid for a second title in two weeks came to a shuddering halt when she retired injured from her semi-final at the Family Circle Cup on Saturday.

The top-seeded Dane, who clinched her seventh career title in Ponte Vedra, Florida last week, quit while trailing Russia's Vera Zvonareva 5-2 in the opening set after injuring her right ankle in a tumble.

In the previous game, Wozniacki had tripped while sliding in for a drop shot. After being helped from the court, she had her ankle taped up and played one more game before pulling out.

In Sunday's final, seventh-seeded Zvonareva will meet fourth seed Samantha Stosur of Australia.

Stosur, a renowned doubles player, came from 5-3 down in the second set to beat eighth-seeded Slovak Daniela Hantuchova 6-3 7-6 in their semi-final.

The Australian, who broke into the top 10 for the first time after reaching the Indian Wells semi-finals last month, powered down eight aces to complete her victory in just under two hours.

American dream

Pro Bowl on television inspired Namdev Shirgaonkar to 'establish' yet another sport, his fourth, in the country

It was at around five in the morning on February 13, 2006 when Namdev Shirgaonkar had a proverbial epiphany. Not in the recess of his dreams, but with his eyes wide open, glued to the television set at his home in Navi Mumbai, watching the Pro Bowl on ESPN.

Having worked as a sports administrator with football-7-a-side, soft tennis and indoor cricket, he realised, even as the NFC team beat the AFC side 23-17 halfway across the globe in Hawaii, that American football was his calling.

Determined to bring the sport to the country, he dug up more information about the sport and contacted International Federation of American Football (IFAF). But there was a hitch ? he wasn't the only one following the game on television, others, too, had had their respective moments of truth and the world body had received at least 10 more expressions of interest from India alone "to develop the game". What would have been a hurdle for others, Namdev turned in his favour.

"The IFAF told us that we needed to have state associations and show some activity. I got in touch with those who had shown interest. We formed the body and got a provisional membership," says Shirgaonkar, the founder general secretary of the Indian association, speaking to The Sunday Express.

Having set the ball rolling, the next step was to organise events, and that didn't take them long. Within one year of its inception, the American Football Federation of India (AFFI) arranged close to 300 athletes ? mostly soccer and rugby players ? and hosted the first national championships in Pune. It didn't matter that there was no equipment, they played a variant of the game, touch football, where you don't need any.

"The IFAF was impressed with out efforts and India got a full membership in 2008. It was a huge achievement for us. But bigger tests lie ahead. The next step is to move from touch football to tackle football, but we will need equipment for that," he says.

While most associations rely on the government for funds, AFFI, while looking for recognition, doesn't seem too keen to depend on it. "We want to go cricket's way. This game has brought professionalism in India, I want to follow that model. With regard to funds, earlier National Football League, one of the richest sports bodies in the world, used to give funds directly to various countries, now they route it through the IFAF. Now that we are a full member, we hope we won't face a cash crunch," says Shirgaonkar, jet-lagged, having returned from Australia early in the morning after attending the sports Annual General Meeting. In his capacity as the Indian body's general secretary and development co-ordinator for South Asia, the 31-year-old has travelled places ? from Sweden to America and now Down Under.

It's a demanding job in itself, and he is also associated with the Maharashtra state units of soft tennis and football-7-a-side and is also the India vice-president of the indoor cricket association. And he has also showed interest in beach cricket. Is Shirgaonkar not wearing too many hats? "I am with those bodies in nominal positions. Right now, I am only focusing on American Football. It has got a great future," he says. "After all, America ka craze hai."

Livorno on the brink of relegation after Chievo defeat

Published Sun, Apr 18 10 12:30 AM

Serie A bottom side Livorno are on the brink of relegation after losing 2-0 at Chievo Verona on Saturday.

Sergio Pellissier drilled a diagonal strike inside the near post to put the hosts ahead in the 28th minute shortly after being denied a strong penalty claim for a push in the back as he was about to shoot.

Elvis Abbruscato touched the ball home from close range to wrap up the victory two minutes from time.

Livorno have 26 points with four games left to play, nine points less than Bologna in the safety zone before the fourth-bottom side visit Udinese on Sunday (1300 GMT).

Chievo, in contrast, look to have top-flight survival in the bag after a win that puts them 12th, 10 points above the drop zone.

AS Roma meet city rivals Lazio on Sunday (1630) needing a win to restore a one-point lead at the top of the table over champions Inter Milan, who beat Juventus 2-0 on Friday.

Ferguson dances with delight after last-gasp winner

Published>Sat, Apr 17 10 11:50 PM

The significance of Paul Scholes's last-gasp winner in the Manchester derby on Saturday sparked wild celebrations among his team mates and sent United manager Alex Ferguson dancing along the touchline.

The diminutive midfielder's header in the dying seconds at a sun-drenched Eastlands on Saturday earned United a 1-0 win over Manchester City and revived the Premier League champions' hopes of a record 19th championship and a record fourth in a row.

"We weren't getting carried away at the end, if you win a derby in that manner, four games from the end of the season, to give yourself a hope of still winning the title, then obviously you're going to be excited," said United captain Gary Neville.

"Obviously, there are always question marks at this club when you lose matches. Today we're delighted we've won that game in such a manner," he told MUTV after backroom staff and substitutes raced on to the pitch to join in the celebrations.

"The celebration was about coming out of a difficult two or three weeks. And winning the derby means everything -- to us, to the players, the fans. It's something that we needed. We definitely needed that as a club."

DIFFICULT SPELL

Ferguson's side have endured a difficult few weeks. First, Champions League elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich and then a crucial league defeat on home turf by Chelsea.

A dull 0-0 draw at Blackburn Rovers followed and with it came a swarm of newspaper back pages proclaiming the title was heading to Chelsea's Stamford Bridge.

With three games remaining, Scholes's strike put second-placed United just one point behind Chelsea, who play at Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday's late match (1630 GMT).

"I think he (Scholes) was the man of the match. To my mind he was absolutely fantastic. He is such a skilful player. He was wonderful today," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

Neville added: "We have not had a great two weeks but today in the last minute Scholesy, who has passed them to death all day, has popped up in the box and scored and given us a little bit of life. We now just have to hope someone does us a favour."

"We just have to go home and hope Tottenham do something for us."

Ferguson, who was without injured central defender Rio Ferdinand but did include fit-again striker Wayne Rooney after an ankle knock, selected the tried-and-tested old guard of Neville, Ryan Giggs and Scholes for the City match.

"The experience in these games is definitely important," said the United manager. "They have been in so many of these derby games over the years that they are vital now. It helps other players apart from their own contribution."

Loeb takes control in Turkey

Sebastien Loeb of France and his co-driver Daniel Elena of Monaco drive their Citroen C4...

Published Sat, Apr 17 10 11:30 PM

Citroen's world champion Sebastien Loeb will take a 16.2 second advantage into the final day of the Rally of Turkey after vaulting into the lead on Saturday.

The six times champion, chasing his third win in a row after just four rounds of the season, stamped his authority on the second day after starting fifth overall.

Overnight leader Sebastien Ogier, driving for the Citroen junior team, lost the lead when he stopped on stage 15 to change a punctured tyre, costing him three minutes and dropping him to fifth place.

Norway's former world champion Petter Solberg, in a privately-entered Citroen, was in second place with Finland's Mikko Hirvonen third and just 1.1 seconds further back in his Ford.

Former Formula One world champion Kimi Raikkonen moved up to sixth place and on course for his second successive points finish.

"I'm happy with where I am at the moment," said Loeb after a hard day on the gravel and asphalt roads to the north and east of Istanbul. "It may not be easy (tomorrow), but we will try."

The Frenchman leads Finland's Jari-Matti Latvala by 25 points after three rallies. Ford's Latvala ended the second leg in 12th place after crashing on the day's opening stage.

He was unhurt and got going again but lost nine minutes to the leaders.

Two explosions at Bangalore cricket stadium injures 10

Published>Sat, Apr 17 10 11:10 PM

Bangalore, April 17 (IANS) Two low intensity blasts, one at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and another nearby, ahead of an Indian Premier League tie Saturday left 10 people injured, including one seriously. A third explosive found at the stadium later was defused, police said.

The blasts, just ahead of the Mumbai Indians-Royal Challengers Bangalore tie, sent Bangalore police into a tizzy as both the semi-finals of the premier league T20 are scheduled to be played at the Chinnaswamy stadium on April 21 and April 22.

With over 40,000 fans expected to throng the stadium for the semi-finals, like they did Saturday to watch the RCB-MI tie, police said they would intensify efforts to sanitize the venue and surrounding areas.

The third explosive device was found three hours after the blasts in a plastic bag near Gate No 8 when police and their dog squad began searching the area, a police spokesperson told reporters.

The first blast was at Anil Kumble Circle, less than half-a-kilometre from the stadium. No one was hurt in the explosion. The second one took place at around 3.15 p.m., 45 minutes before the scheduled start of the match, at Gate no 12. The blast caused minor damage to the outer wall of the stadium.

Of the ten injured, four are policemen, one a security volunteer and the rest spectators waiting at Gate No 12.

Security volunteer Srinivas Murthy suffered head injuries but there was no danger to his life, Nancy Jennifer, casualty medical officer of the Mallya Hospital, about three km away from the stadium, where he was being treated, told IANS.

Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari told reporters at the stadium: 'It appears an explosive was planted near Gate no 12 behind a plastic billboard placed close to the outer wall of the stadium. Four policemen suffered minor injuries while a security guard was seriously hurt.

'It was not a powerful explosive. Forensic experts will examine the site and determine the nature of the explosive,' he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar told IANS that the explosive in the first blast appeared to have been kept in a bush.

Earlier, there was utter confusion at Gate no 12 of the stadium as the explosion caused a loud noise and hundreds of fans waiting to enter the stadium ran helter and skelter.

Sirens of police vans and ambulances only added to the panic. At first it was thought that a overheated generator had exploded. Forensic experts visited the two places to examine the nature of explosives.

When the blast near the stadium gate took place, thousands of spectators were already inside the stadium.

Soon after the blast, police closed all the gates to the stadium.

Players of both the teams were asked to return to their dressing rooms till police gave the go ahead for the match, which began at 5 p.m. after an hour's delay.

'The match will go on. There is no need for panic. I appeal to all fans to subject to security checks, cooperate with the police and enjoy the game,' Bidari said.

Alok Kumar said police have no clue about who placed the explosive in the two places.

The nearly full stadium of 40,000 capacity did not show any signs of being affected by the explosions as fans roared when the two captains, Anil Kumble and Sachin Tendulkar, came out for the toss which the former won and elected for the Royal Challengers Bangalore to bowl.

Both teams have already made it to the semifinals of the IPL.

Dipika wins Indian Challenger title

Published Sat, Apr 17 10 10:40 PM

Kolkata, Apr 17 (PTI) Dipika Pallikal Defeated Emma Beddoes of England 11-9 11-8 9-11 11-6 to win the WISPA Indian Challenger squash tournament at Calcutta Racket Club squash courts here today. For Dipika, it was her first WISPA title and seemingly she was ecstatic after the win. "I didn''t have too many expectations before coming here. Nonetheless, it''s truly a wonderful feeling to achieve such a feat," Dipika told reporters. Cheered on by a huge crowd, Dipika''s drop-shots and slices found the second seeded Beddoes in all sorts of trouble in the match. Trailing 1-5, Dipika fought back strongly with a barrage of backhand winners to wrap up the first set 11-9 in her favour. There was no change in the script in the second set as the 18-year-old continued with her excellent rhythm and raced on to an 8-3 lead. Beddoes did try to pull things back by winning three consecutive points, but Dipika was in no mood to give an inch to her opponent and pocked the second set 11-8. The Indian looked to be heading towards a straight set victory before Beddoes lifted her game and pulled one back by clinching the third set 9-11 before Dipika sealed the encounter in her favour in the next. Meanwhile in the men''s summit clash, Egypt''s Mohamed El Shorbagy prevailed over compatriot Tarek Momen 11-7 3-11 8-11 11-8 11-8 to clinch the title.

Scholes saves United, Burnley closer to the drop

Published>Sat, Apr 17 10 10:30 PM

Manchester United stayed in the Premier League title chase by the skin of their teeth on Saturday thanks to a last-gasp goal from Paul Scholes that condemned bitter rivals Manchester City to a 1-0 defeat.

The header seconds from the final whistle left City fans close to tears and put a smile back on the face of United manager Alex Ferguson just when he thought his men were dead and buried.

It also put the pressure back on leaders Chelsea, playing fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur later at White Hart Lane, to win and restore their four-point advantage with three matches remaining.

United have 76 points to Chelsea's 77 with third-placed Arsenal, who visit Wigan Athletic on Sunday, on 71.

"It (winning the title) certainly would have been very, very difficult (without Scholes's goal)," a relieved Ferguson told Sky Sports television.

"I think we deserved to win the game ... but I couldn't see a goal coming to be honest with you.

"We are hoping Tottenham win tonight and if they do, the title is back on."

It was the second time this season that City had lost out to their cross-town rivals in added time, the league's wealthiest team beaten 4-3 by United at Old Trafford in September when Michael Owen scored in the 96th minute.

Saturday's defeat at Eastlands was every bit as painful since it dented Abu Dhabi-owned City's hopes of staying ahead of Tottenham and seizing the fourth and final Champions League qualifying berth for next season.

At the other end of the league, Bolton Wanderers took a big step towards survival by beating Stoke City 2-1.

Burnley slumped ever deeper into the relegation mire when they lost 2-1 at Sunderland, with the home side 2-0 up at halftime thanks to goals from Fraizer Campbell and Darren Bent.

Steven Thompson pulled a goal back for Burnley with a right-footed shot in the 82nd minute.

Burnley dropped to 19th place, with only relegated Portsmouth behind them, on 27 points and having played one game more than Hull City who leapfrogged ahead on 28 after a goalless draw at Birmingham City.

West Ham United, three points clear of Hull, play at Liverpool on Monday.

Europa League semi-finalists Fulham moved up to 10th with a 0-0 home draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, who climbed closer to safety. Everton beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2.

Sutil to start at 10th position in Chinese Grand Prix

Published>Sat, Apr 17 10 10:24 PM

Shanghai, April 17 (IANS) Force India experienced a mixed qualifying session at the Chinese Grand Prix Saturday.

Adrian Sutil will start the race from 10th position, but there was disappointment for Vitantonio Liuzzi, who will start Sunday's race at 18th position.

Adrian progressed through to the second segment of qualifying with the 12th quickest lap and then on his final lap of qualifying, posted the ninth fastest time.

In the third segment, Adrian used the softer tyre compound to post a time that was only just bettered by the Mercedes of Michael Schumacher in the dying seconds of the session.

'I think we can be very pleased with that. I know this position (10th) very well from the last races in Australia and Bahrain. The car is behaving very well and we can be happy about the balance we have,' said Adrian.

'We can look forward to the race tomorrow I think our long runs were quite good on Friday.'

Liuzzi said the car was reacting well to changes and seemed to have a good pace.

'For the third time in four races I got caught in traffic with a Williams and an HRT. But that's how it is, it happens, we have to look at why and then work on this,' he said.

'I think we are in great shape for the race as the speed has been there when we were on the longer runs but when you start in 18th place it makes life much more difficult. We are still optimistic though and we keep pushing whatever happens.'

Mumbai crush Bangalore by 57 runs

Published Sat, Apr 17 10 09:54 PM

Joseph Hoover Bangalore, Apr 17 (PTI) Kieron Pollard led a disciplined Mumbai Indians bowling attack with three wickets for 28 as the visitors crushed Royal Challengers Bangalore by 57 runs in an IPL match here today. Table toppers Mumbai Indians gleefully accepted the home side''s offer to bat first and posted a huge 191 for four and then restricted Bangalore to 134 for nine to post their 10th win from 13 matches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Chasing an intimidating 192 for a win, Bangalore top order crumbled under tight Mumbai bowling with none of them coming up with a big score in the match which was delayed by one hour due to low intensity explosions outside the stadium 45 minutes before the start. Virat Kohli top-scored with a brave 24-ball 37 but all his batting colleagues had a collective failure in their last league match. Manish Pandey (16), Jacques Kallis (14), Kevin Pietersen (21), Rahul Dravid (16), Robin Uthappa (4) and Ross Taylor (9) failed to click under a disciplined bowling effort from Mumbai. The home side were never in the run chase with their openers Pandey and Kallis back in the hut with just 31 on board in the sixth over before Dravid was out in the ninth over. When Pietersen and Uthappa fell in successive overs -- in the 11th and 12th -- and then Taylor followed suit in the 15th it was all over for Bangalore whose top six contributed just 97 runs. All the five Mumbai bowlers took at least a wicket with Pollard being the most successful with three wickets for 28 from his four overs. Dilhara Fernando and Harbhajan Singh took two wickets apiece by conceding 24 and 28 runs respectively from four overs each. Zaheer Khan and Ryan McLaren chipped in with a wicket each. With this win, Mumbai, who have already qualified for the semifinals, increased the gap with other teams taking their points tally to 20 with one league match yet to play. Bangalore, who slumped to their seventh loss today, will have to wait for the results of other league matches as the other three last-four slots are likely to be decided by net run rates. Bangalore ended their league engagements with 14 points and a net run rate of plus 0.219.

Sutil to start at 10th position in Chinese Grand Prix

Published>Sat, Apr 17 10 09:50 PM

Chinese power on show at Asian badminton

Published>Sat, Apr 17 10 09:10 PM

New Delhi, April 17 (IANS) Led by World and Olympic champion Lin Dan, China reigned supreme with a dominating performance at the Badminton Asia Championships which concludes Sunday.

Despite many top Chinese players missing the action, including world's top five in women singles, China showed why they are an indisputable power in the sport with both the men's and women's singles final an all-Chinese affair.

The top two seeds in women's final -- home favourite Saina Nehwal and Hong Kong's Mi Zhou were devoured by the dragon fire, both matches won by qualifiers.

An error-prone Saina stumbled against China's Xuerui Li 17-21, 11-21 while Zhou Mi, a former Chinese, went down to Xin Liu, 15-21, 18-21 in the first semi-final.

For the first time in the continental championship, two qualifiers will battle it out in the title clash.

In the men's singles, second seeded Lin beat Thailand's fifth seeded Boonsak Ponsana 22-20, 21-10 while unseeded Wang Zhengming upset sixth seeded All England Open finalist Kenichi Tago of Japan 21-14, 19-21, 21-16 in a thrilling encounter.

Super Lin showed why he is regarded as one of the best players ever as he fought off a tense battle in the first game against Boonsak.

Lin, who has not been in the best of form this year and lost early in the All England Open and Swiss Open, said it was just a bad phase in his career.

'Every sportsperson goes through a phase when he reaches a peak and then slides. I am also a human being and there are ups and downs in the career of every sportsperson,' said the 26-year-old Lin, who has all the titles to his credit except the Asian title.

'I will be playing my junior in the final and I will give my best. It's nice that the title will remain with China.'

Wang, who was well-prepared to face Kenichi Tago, said he did not allow the Japanese to play his powerful game.

'He is very powerful with his smashes. I had studied his videos and did not allow him to play his natural game,' said the 2008 world Junior champion.

It is the world class back-up strength of China that came to the fore in this tournament.

'We have long camps and I regularly play against top players like Lin Dan,' said Wang.

Asked whether he still feels homesick as he had once complained, he said: 'I used to feel homesick before but now I am used to the training camps.'

In the men's doubles, Gun Woo Choo and Y'on Seong Yoo of Korea defeated Chieh Min Fang and Sheng Mu Lee of Chinese Taipei 21-18 and 22-20. The Korean pair meets top seed Hung Ling Chen and Yu Lang Lin of Chinese Taipei, who got the better of Korean Sang Hoon Han and Ji Man Hwang 17-21, 21-16, 21-15.

In women's doubles event sixth seeded Chinese Pan Pan and Quing Tian won a marathon match against third-seeded Chinese Taipei's Wen Hsing Cheng and Yu Chin'Chien 22-24, 21-16, 21-18.

The second women's doubles semi-final was equally well-fought with the Malaysian Vivian Kah Mun Hoo and Khe Wei Woon edgeing past Thailand's Savitree Amitapai and Vacharaporn Munkit 18-21, 21-17, 21-14.

In the mixed doubles final, sixth seeded Korean Yeon Seong Yoo and Min Jung Kim will take on seventh seeds Malaysian Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh.

The Korean pair defeated Chinese Zihan Qiu and Qing Tian 24-22, 13-21, 21-11 while the Mayasians battled past fifth seeded Indonesian Devin L.F. and Liliyana 22-20 and 21-16

Advani blames Govt. of saving Tharoor

Published>Sat, Apr 17 10 08:54 PM

New Delhi, April 17 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Lal Krishan Advani on Saturday blamed the Government of using its might to save the Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor in the ongoing Kochi Indian Premier League team controversy.

In the wake of the controversy over Tharoor's alleged role in an IPL team getting murkier with each passing day, Advani also said that Tharoor is not fit to be a minister.

Advani, meanwhile, has also demanded from the government to probe if the funds for Indian Premier League were coming from foreign, an NDTV report stated.

Tharoor is facing allegations of having misused office to get sweat equity valued at Rs 70 crore for his friend Sunanda Pushkar in the Kochi IPL franchise.

Tharoor's fate has been hanging in balance ever since the controversy broke with a tweet from IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi, as everyone waited for the Prime Minister to return.(ANI)

Third explosive device defused at Bangalore cricket stadium

Published>Sat, Apr 17 10 08:50 PM

Bangalore, April 17 (IANS) A third explosive device was found near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and defused three hours after two low intensity blasts, one at the stadium and another nearby, injured five people ahead of the Mumbai Indians-Royal Challengers Bangalore Indian Premier League tie here Saturday, police said.

The third explosive device was found in a plastic bag near Gate No 8, a police spokesperson told reporters.

The explosive device was found as police were sanitizing the stadium after one explosion at around 3.15 p.m., 45 minutes before the scheduled start of the match tie, at Gate No 12B and another at Anil Kumble circle, less than half-a-km away, the official said.

Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari told reporters at the stadium: 'It appears an explosive was planted near gate no 12 behind a plastic billboard. Four policemen suffered minor injuries while a security guard was seriously hurt.

'It was not a powerful explosive. Forensic experts will examine the site and determined the nature of the explosive,' he said.

Another explosion took place near the Anil Kumble Circle, less than half-a-kilometre from the stadium, Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar told IANS. No one was hurt in the explosion.

The explosives appeared to have been kept in a bush, Alok Kumar said.

Unconfirmed reports said around 15 people, including the four policmen, had suffered minor injuries. But police stuck to their figure of five injured.

Earlier, there was utter confusion at gate no 12B of the stadium as the explosion caused a loud noise and hundreds of fans waiting to enter the stadium ran helter and skelter.

Sirens of police vans and ambulances only added to the panic. At first it was thought that a overheated generator had exploded. Forensic experts visited the two places to examine the nature of explosives.

When the explosion near the stadium gate took place, thousands of spectators were already inside the stadium.

Soon after the blast, police closed all the gates to the stadium and were a harried lot, answering questions from the increasingly restless fans on the reasons for not allowing them in.

Barreto double powers Bagan to 4-0 win over Air India

Published Sat, Apr 17 10 08:28 PM

Kolkata, Apr 17 (PTI) Jose Barreto sparkled with a double strike to help Mohun Bagan blank Air India 4-0 and snap six-match winless streak in the I-League at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here today. Mohun Bagan ruled the roost right from the start with Ryuji Sueoka giving a fifth minute lead while Marcos Pereira made it 2-0 in the 21st minute. Barreto then found his magical touch back with two goals in the 60th and 69th minute to complete the rout of the Mumbai outfit. In fact, Barreto narrowly missed a hat-trick when he missed an easy opportunity two minutes before final whistle but he returned with the Man of the Match trophy after the memorable outing in the 21st round match. With Air India''s defence weakened due to the absence of Peter Odafe (double yellow), Mohun Bagan attacked right from the start and Sueoka put the team ahead with a fine dribble resulting in a goal. Edeh Chidi almost made it 2-0 minutes later but the Nigerian missed the target. Mohun Bagan continued their attacking mode with Barreto taking the initiative but the Brazilian opened his account after the changeover. Mohun Bagan got a freekick in the 20th minute which was converted by Pereira as the local side did not give any chance to the Airmen. It was Barreto all the way after the break with the Brazilian after receiving the supply from his strike partner Chidi made it 3-0 in the 60th minute. Nine minutes later, he scored again from a solo effort. With today''s win, Mohun Bagan improved their position by one place, climbing to fifth place with 29 points, while Air India remained static with 24 points.

Volcano fallout felt from Manchester to Shanghai

Passengers stand next to a Eurostar information sign at Gare du Nord station in Paris...

Published>Sat, Apr 17 10 07:50 PM

From the Manchester soccer derby to the Chinese Formula One Grand Prix in Shanghai, sport felt the fallout from the cloud of volcanic ash hanging over northern and central Europe on Saturday.

The closure of airports across Britain for the third successive day, causing travel chaos and leaving thousands stranded around the world, brought a whiff of controversy to the Premier League's headline clash between Manchester City and United at Eastlands.

Referee Steve Bennett had to be replaced when he was unable to get back from Romania where he was overseeing a course for match officials.

His replacement Martin Atkinson was hardly City's favourite after he refereed their 4-3 league defeat at Old Trafford in September, with United's Michael Owen grabbing a 96th-minute winner after the official had awarded just four minutes of extra time.

The city's other red team, Salford City rugby league club, were having to travel by coach to Perpignan in the south of France for a cup match on Sunday.

"It's certainly not our preferred method but the game has to be played," head coach Shaun McRae told the club website (http://reds.originalreddevils.com).

"With the game not being until Sunday we can afford to take our time a little bit. We'll be making frequent stops for stretches and exercise and so the players can take on food."

TORRES WAITS

Yet another red, Liverpool's injured striker Fernando Torres, was in limbo after being unable to get the all-clear to play from a specialist in his native Spain.

"He needs to see the specialist ... he knows his knee really well," said manager Rafa Benitez when asked whether Torres might play at home to West Ham United on Monday.

"We have to wait. He is working in the gym and we will see."

Formula One felt the effect, with members of the McLaren team staging a last-minute dash from London to Paris to get themselves and potentially vital spare parts on to one of the last flights out before the shutdown on Thursday.

"We have got a few people who were going to be latecomers who won't be here now but we've got everything we need to perform this weekend," team boss Martin Whitmarsh told reporters.

Getting the personnel and equipment back after Sunday's race could prove more complicated although the sport is nothing if not resourceful.

"The great thing about Formula One is it is hugely adaptable, they'll sort it out," former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan, grounded in London and unable to travel to Shanghai to carry out his role as BBC television pundit, told Reuters.

"The freight I can't see coming back to the UK. I think they will probably go straight to Barcelona and the trucks will leave from here as usual.

"Fortunately we've got a whole heap of time before the next flyaway (race)."

The next grand prix after China is the Spanish race in Barcelona on May 9 followed by Monaco and then Turkey -- all races where the cars and freight are transported by road or ferry boat.

The Canadian Grand Prix, in Montreal on June 13, is the sport's next long-haul destination.

New Delhi, April 17 (ANI): While the Opposition is hard bent on seeking a statement in the Parliament by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor-Kochi IPL ongoing controversy, the PM on Saturday said "Politics has its ups and downs."
