Organisers to inquire into pool-related illness

Thu, Oct 07 10 12:22 PM

New Delhi, October 7 (PTI) Amid reports that the Commonwealth Games swimming pool in Delhi may be contaminated, the organisers were today left red-faced with the ''Big Two'' Michael Fennell and Suresh Kalmadi promising an inquiry and a solution by today. Addressing the media in the daily interaction at the MPC today, Commonwealth Games Federation president Fennell said they were investigating the case, though they were yet to get any specific report from the teams about illness. "We are ensuring that the water quality is tested. We don''t have specific reports about illnes. We must find this out immediately. we have to deal with it. It needs some urgency," he said, while responding to a query whether they would postpone the day''s finals. Asked whether water at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Acquatics Complex was contaminated, Fennell said: "Let''s not speculate. We are concenered if the athletes were not well. These are being investigated, though we are yet to get specific reports from swimming." According to reports, almost two thirds of the British swimming squad have been hit hard by a "Delhi belly", with leading English swimmer Francesca Halsall falling ill during an event that she was tipped to win. Halsall slipped to third place in the final of the 100 meters freestyle and could only come 10th in the 100 metres butterfly semi-final as she started to faint in the pool after the race. Team doctor Ian Gordon said: "It is hygiene-related." The Aussies are not spared either with a dozen swimmers including several international stars have fallen ill after stomach bug with the water at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Acquatics Complex being blamed. Notably, Australians Andrew Lauterstein and Hayden Stoeckel pulled out of their respective heats this morning because of stomach bugs as Australian chef de mission Steve Moneghetti said pool water could be a "possible" reason. Didn''t make match-fixing allegations against Eng players: Butt

Thu, Oct 07 10 11:16 AM

Karachi, Oct 7 (PTI) After apologising to the England Cricket Board, PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt now says he never made any allegations of match-fixing against English players and was only trying to make the point that the sport is "reeling from a storm of allegations and rumors". Butt, who returned from London last night, said his comments that there are strong rumours about English players taking money to lose matches were only meant to highlight the fluid state of affairs in international cricket. "I am happy to correct the misunderstanding that I, or anyone at the PCB had made any allegations about members of the England cricket team. The point which I have sought to make from the beginning was that the world of cricket is reeling from a storm of allegations and rumors, and these must be addressed," Butt said in a statement. "Many of these recent allegations have concerned the Pakistan cricket team, and these must and will be properly investigated. But, and this was my point, the problem, and the rumors, are not confined to any single country," he added. Butt said the PCB was fully cooperating with the ongoing spot-fixing investigations against three suspended Pakistani players -- Test skipper Salman Butt and pacer Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir. "Those of us who care about the state of cricket in the world today will not flinch from a thorough, uncompromising investigation of any such allegations and rumors, whether they concern Pakistan or any other cricketing nation, and we at the PCB will give any such investigation our fullest cooperation and support," Butt said. Butt also made it clear that he or anyone at the PCB have no specific evidence of any wrongdoing by cricketers from England. "Our priority and our responsibility must be the actions of the Pakistan Team. These are quite properly subject now to an investigation by both Scotland Yard and the ICC. I am very glad that we have been able to resolve this misunderstanding with our friends in English cricket. .

'Delhi Games will be rated among the best'

Published>Thu, Oct 07 10 09:52 AM

New Delhi, Oct 7 (IANS) The Commonwealth Games in Delhi will be rated among the best sporting events in the world and India has already silenced critics with a spectacular opening ceremony, top representatives of participating countries have said.

'We were really concerned about the preparation, especially because of media reports. But the opening ceremony was spectacular. I think it was among the best,' Uganda's Minister of State for Sports Charles Bakkabulindi told IANS.

'Since India is a developing country, some people were sceptical - they questioned its ability to host the Games. But I am sure its success will showcase India's emergence as a leading player in world affairs -- in economy, politics and sports,' he said.

'India is already leading developing nations on many issues of global importance. It has shown developing countries can do the things and they can do them better,' said Bakkabulindi, who is leading a 34-member Ugandan team to the Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Cliff Fuller, New Zealand's trade commissioner to India, agreed, adding on many aspects he found the opening ceremony and the overall conduct of the Games better than similar events earlier.

'The opening ceremony gives the impression that It will be the best ever Commonwealth Games,' Fuller said. 'New Zealand, I can say, is quite satisfied with the security and overall arrangements for the Games.'

Michael Carter, the Australian trade commissioner and counsellor-commercial at the high commission here, said the Games will also go on to strengthen trade, economic and political ties between India and Australia.

'In the end, India has proved it can do things and it can do well. The opening ceremony was outstanding. We expect very successful Games,' said Carter, in sharp contrast to the carping done by officials from Australia and New Zealand earlier.

He said the Games would give a major fillip to India-Australia bilateral trade, that is now pegged at over $20 billion. 'Over 400,000 Indians live in Australia. The game will further strengthen people-to-people contacts - an important thread in our relations.'

Zambian Acting High Commissioner to India Allan D. Kalebuka said his country was pushing India to do more, mainly because he wanted New Delhi to show the world that developing countries, too, had the potential to do as well as what the rich nations boast of.

'India has done us proud. Everything has been done so well,' Kalebuka told IANS.

The 19th edition of the Games is seeing the highest participation, with more than 7,000 athletes and officials from all the 71 member countries and territories of the Commonwealth federation.

Liverpool play waiting game under cloud of uncertainty

Published>Thu, Oct 07 10 08:36 AM

Uncertainty hung over Liverpool on Thursday as the club's board, fans and prospective new owner awaited clues on when the legal battle with the Premier League soccer club's current owners might be resolved.

With just over a week to go until the Oct. 15 deadline by which more than 200 million pounds ($318.4 million) of debt owed to RBS must be refinanced, the possible sale to the New England Sports Ventures (NESV) hinges on a bitter boardroom battle.

American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have this week sought to sack board members and install their own people as they bid to retain control of the 18-times English champions and get a higher price than the 300 million pounds offered by NESV.

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton is disappointed with the way the American duo are seeking to block a sale but cannot do anything other than await the outcome of the legal action.

Players were also holding out for news, with Jamie Carragher saying an NEVS takeover -- which the club's board said had been agreed on Wednesday -- would be a good thing for Liverpool.

"Everyone knows it'll be a good thing for the club. Hopefully it will be sorted sooner rather than later and we can start looking forward on the pitch and start improving results, which is what we need to do," the defender told the club website (www.liverpoolfc.tv).

The current break in the Premier League schedule for international matches means the club's attention can be on ownership issues which they will hope to resolve before the team's next match on Oct. 17 -- the Merseyside derby at Everton.

With Liverpool in the relegation zone and their neighbours just above them on goal difference, that is a match guaranteed to focus the spotlight back on to the pitch.

Liverpool fans try to banish bad American memories

Published>Thu, Oct 07 10 07:36 AM

Memories of unfulfilled promises and bitter rows have made it hard for Liverpool fans to whole-heartedly embrace the idea of more American owners coming to restore the club to former glories.

Three and a half years ago, when beaming U.S. sports tycoons Tom Hicks and George Gillett posed for photos with a red Liverpool scarf on the Anfield turf and promised a new stadium and players, the club seemed to have a bright future.

That initial optimism soon vanished, along with the pledge to start work on a new 60,000-seater stadium within 60 days of their takeover, and fans turned against the duo before they put the debt-laden club up for sale this year.

Rumours of interested parties circulated before the club's chairman Martin Broughton announced on Wednesday that the board had accepted a 300 million-pound bid from New England Sports Venues (NESV), owners of baseball's Boston Red Sox.

An NESV statement spoke of dedication and success.

"Our objective is to stabilise the Club and ultimately return Liverpool FC to its rightful place in English and European football, successfully competing for and winning trophies," it said.

"NESV wants to help bring back the culture of winning to Liverpool FC."

There has been no word yet from NESV's American owner John W. Henry but as long as he does not make the mistake of calling Liverpool a "franchise" -- as Gillett did in his first news conference -- he will have got off to a better start.

WINNING MENTALITY

Internet fan forums were flooded with reaction ranging from "out of the frying pan and into the fire" to "please let this be the end of the nightmare" but with the overriding feeling one of relief that the club could soon have new owners mixed with a heavy dose of caution.

Chairman Broughton tried to reassure fans by speaking of the new owners' "winning mentality", as demonstrated by their transformation of the Red Sox into a title-winning outfit.

He said money would be available to buy players in the next transfer window and that the club would soon have the 60,000-seater stadium, although it was not clear whether this would be a new ground or a redevelopment of Anfield.

Fans keen to make clear their expectations, wrote messages on Henry's Facebook page like "please bring back our glory", "do for us what you did for the Red Sox and you will be a legend in Liverpool" and "look after the club and you'll be loved".

Supporters have seen their club go from Champions League finalists in the year Hicks and Gillett took over to sitting in the relegation zone now after their worst start to a season for more than half a century.

Although Spain forward Fernando Torres was signed with them at the helm, less money has been available as they spent funds on servicing the club's debt of more than 200 million pounds.

There were also public relations blunders, such as when the owners admitted the club had made an approach for German Juergen Klinsmann with a view to replacing Rafa Benitez as manager and Tom Hicks junior's foul-mouthed tirade in an email to a fan which forced him to resign from the board.

Gillett and Hicks have also barely been on speaking terms for the past couple of years and they have been at loggerheads with the board.

Those who know the prospective new owners think there will be no repeat of these problems.

"The fans of Liverpool should be excited," Dave Checketts, owner of MLS team Real Salt Lake, said at the Leaders in Football conference in London.

"From a business perspective they've done a superb job (with the Redsox), from a PR perspective -- superb -- and they got success on the field. I think they'll repeat the model at Liverpool and I think they'll be outstanding."

Colombian league leaders investigated over drugs money

Thu, Oct 07 10 07:06 AM

Leading Colombian soccer club Independiente Santa Fe is being investigated over the alleged laundering of large sums of drugs money.

Colombia's Attorney General Guillermo Mendoza told reporters the government had confiscated $29 million and 17 million euros from fugitive drugs trafficker Daniel "El Loco" Barrera allegedly meant for laundering through the club.

"We are in no doubt that part of that money was aimed at financing the Independiente Santa Fe team," police chief Oscar Naranjo said.

It is the most recent case of the involvement of soccer clubs with the Colombian drugs cartels after America, Millonarios and Union Magdalena.

Ana Margarita Duran, head of the Anti-narcotics Unit, said: "This football team has received money from drugs traffickers through front men."

Santa Fe, six times Colombian champions, are top of the Clausura, the second championship of the 2010 season.

Club chairman Cesar Pastrana said they would cooperate in any investigation.

"Santa Fe has its doors open for anything they need...This issue has been ongoing for several months but so far we have not been asked for anything officially by the Attorney General."

Pastrana said the Attorney General's announcement, made on Tuesday had prevented Santa Fe from signing a contract with a firm intending to become sponsors of the club.

America has been owned since the 1980 by brothers Miguel and Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela, chiefs of the Cali Cartel now serving jail sentences in the United States. The club is on a U.S. government list of institutions others are prohibited from doing business with or risk economic sanctions.

Rushmi defies age, heat to upset No.3

Published>Thu, Oct 07 10 06:36 AM

Rushmi Chakravarthi, who will celebrate her 33rd birthday this Saturday, presented herself with an early birthday gift in the form of a victory (1-6, 7-6, 7-5) over Britain's number 2, third seed of the Commonwealth Games and 11-years her junior, Katie O'Brien in, by far, the most exciting women's singles match of the tournament. The match provided some balm to the Indian camp after Rohan Bopanna lost to second seed Australian ? Peter Luczak. "Playing a seeded opponent is always tough and this is the first time I have played her. Since I am not playing on the circuit, this was one of the best wins of my career", said Rushmi after the match.

O'Brien was off to the best possible start as she wrapped the first set up 6-1 in 28 minutes. While the 22-year-old O'Brien was playing some graceful strokes, Chakravarthi looked rusty and seemed unable to cope with the speed of the game. However she began her comeback in the second set. She found her feet soon, however, and began fighting for every point. It wasn't all smooth sailing though. Her serve was broken in the fifth game and she was down 4-2 at one stage. But she broke back immediately and took the game to a tie break - which she won 7-2, taking the second set 7-6.

It was Chakravarthi who had the wind behind her in the third set, and she was up a break in the fifth game, but this time O'Brien broke back in the very next game to level things up.

The final, deciding twist to the match came in what would become the penultimate game of the match when Rushmi broke O'Brien's serve and took a 6-5 lead. Soon after, she wrapped up the see-saw battle and made her way to the third round.

She also credited the Delhi afternoon heat to her win. Having played before on the capital's courts, she was able to outlast O'Brien who had no experience here.

Former Armstrong teammate gets lifetime ban for doping

Thu, Oct 07 10 05:36 AM

American cyclist Kirk O'Bee, a former teammate of Lance Armstrong, received a lifetime ban and had his competitive results since 2005 erased after a second doping offence, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said on Wednesday.

O'Bee, whose 2007 U.S. national championship will be wiped from the record books as part of the suspension, was banned for his use of synthetic erythropoietin (EPO) and human growth hormone (hGH).

His lifetime ban, which strips all his competitive results dating back to Oct. 2005, stems from a sample collected in an out-of-competition doping control in May 2009.

The 33-year-old O'Bee had previously received a one-year suspension after a sample collected from him in 2001 tested positive for testosterone, a prohibited anabolic agent.

He was part of seven-time Tour de France champion Armstrong's U.S. Postal team in 2000.

Olympic champion Fraser banned six months

Thu, Oct 07 10 05:16 AM

Olympic and world 100 metres champion Shelly-Ann Fraser has been suspended for six months by the IAAF for a doping violation, the world governing body said on Wednesday.

Fraser tested positive for the pain-killer oxycodone at May's Shanghai Diamond League meeting.

She will be eligible to compete again on Jan. 7, the IAAF said on its website (www.iaaf.org).

In July, Fraser told Reuters she had taken tooth painkiller before the event and neglected to list it on a doping form.

Fraser, a role model for Jamaican youth, said then she had mixed emotions about the positive test.

"I take some responsibility because athletes are supposed to be responsible for what they take," she said. "But I am upset because everybody is starting to assume I am taking drugs ... My reputation is ruined somewhat."

Her coach, Stephen Francis, said in July he had hoped Fraser would receive only a warning.

"It is not a performance-enhancing substance nor a masking agent," the coach said.

Fraser had not run since being provisionally suspended on July 8.

She won the Olympic gold at the 2008 Beijing Games and claimed the world title at Berlin in 2009.

Knee injury sidelines Venus Williams for rest of 2010

Thu, Oct 07 10 04:36 AM

A nagging knee injury has forced Venus Williams to skip the rest of the 2010 tennis season, including next month's Fed Cup final between the United States and Italy.

Williams, a seven-time grand slam winner, has been troubled by the problem since July when she was knocked out of the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

The world number three has not played since last month's U.S. Open, where she lost in the semi-finals to the eventual champion Kim Clijsters.

She was to due to play this week's China Open but withdrew because of her knee problems, raising doubts about her chances of playing in the Fed Cup final and the WTA Championships.

"I am very disappointed to announce that I will be unable to play in the season-ending WTA Championships and Fed Cup Final," she said in a statement on Wednesday.

"I have been getting treatment and therapy on my knee and have been making progress but unfortunately must continue to keep weight off my knee for the short term and won't be ready to return to competition in 2010."

Liverpool agree sale but legal battle looms

Published>Thu, Oct 07 10 02:36 AM

Liverpool's board has agreed to sell the club to the owners of baseball's Boston Red Sox but the fate of England's most successful soccer team could yet be decided in court as an ownership dispute rages on.

The Premier League club said on Wednesday they had accepted a 300 million pounds ($477.6 million) offer from New England Sports Ventures (NESV) but the deal is being complicated because they are facing a legal challenge from their current owners.

Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett sought on Tuesday to replace two members of the five-man board with their own people in a final bid to retain control.

Hicks and Gillett also confirmed their commitment to selling Liverpool but said the current offer "dramatically" undervalued the club.

"The board has been legally reconstituted and the new board does not approve of this proposed transaction," a spokesman for the owners said.

The proposed deal's price tag of 300 million pounds includes 200 million in writing down all acquisition debt and taking on additional working capital debts and other liabilities.

The club's American owners would also not have been happy to hear that a sale to NESV has the support of Liverpool's major creditors Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), according to a source familiar with the situation.

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton said he was disappointed the current owners had "tried everything to prevent the deal from happening" but added the potential new owners were the best people for the job.

An NESV statement said it wanted to "stabilise the club and ultimately return Liverpool FC to its rightful place in English and European football, successfully competing for and winning trophies".

UNPOPULAR OWNERS

Hicks and Gillett bought the Merseyside club in February 2007 for 218.9 million pounds and have been unpopular with fans for burdening it with debt, leaving little money for transfers.

Fans have held many protests calling for their departure, blaming the club's worst start to a season for more than half a century on a lack of new players, but they still struck a note of caution.

"We've heard all these promises before and it amounted to very little," James McKenna, a representative of the Spirit of Shankly supporters group, told Reuters.

Broughton sought to allay such fears, saying NESV wanted to create a 60,000-seater stadium in a "short timetable" -- be it a new ground or an expansion of Anfield -- and pointed to their track record with the Red Sox.

"NESV's philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at Red Sox," he said, referring to the two World Series the team won in 2004 and 2007 after an 86-year wait. The first title came two years after the takeover by NESV, headed by multi-millionaire John W. Henry.

The Liverpool deal will require Premier League approval, which could come by Friday, but the legal dispute is the main issue.

"The legal battle is critical," said Wyn Grant, professor of football economics at Warwick University. "If the NESV deal doesn't go through RBS may ultimately intervene."

Clubs can face nine-point penalties if they go into administration although the Premier League is unlikely to want to penalise a club of Liverpool's stature.

The 18-times English champions have picked up just six points from seven games this season.

Weightlifters joined India's gold medal bandwagon winning two, shooters added three more and wrestlers one on day three of competitions.

With eight silver and four bronze also in the hold, India's overall tally stood at 23, for the second spot behind Australia's 41, which includes 21 gold.

England were in third place with six gold, though their total was 26 with 11 silver and nine bronze.

India had won five gold, four silver and two bronze Tuesday.

Led by World No.3 Gagan Narang and Beijing Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra, the Indian shooters set the Karni Singh range on fire, winning three gold and three silver medals Wednesday.

Wrestler Rajender Kumar won a gold, while a silver and two bronzes also came in this event.

Weightlifters N. Ravi Kumar and Renu Bala Chanu won a gold apiece while the women's table tennis team pulled off a major upset by defeating a strong Australian side to power their way into the semifinals.

Elsewhere, Sania Mirza and Somdev Devvaraman moved into the quarterfinals of the tennis singles. Devvaraman and Rohan Bopanna moved into the men's doubles quarterfinals, while Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthi stormed into the women's doubles semifinals. Bopanna, however, crashed out of the men's singles.

India blanked Wales 5-0 and Scotland 4-1 to qualify for the quarterfinals of the badminton mixed team event while the women's hockey team lost 1-2 to Australia.

Narang struck gold early, pipping Bindra in the 10m air rifle competition.

Omkar Singh wrapped it up with a gold in the 50m pistol event.

The shooters continued the winning spree with junior world champion Asher Noria and world No.3 Ronjan Sodhi teaming up to net the silver in the men's pairs double trap.

Rahi Sarnobat also bagged a silver in the 25m women's pistol event.

Narang, who equalled his own world record in the qualification round with a perfect 600, went on to score 103.6 in the final round, leaving Bindra (698 points, 595+103) behind.

Garcia Da Pena suspended after EPO detected - UCI

Thu, Oct 07 10 01:16 AM

Spanish rider David Garcia Da Pena has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for the banned blood-booster erythropoietin (EPO) the International Cycling Union (UCI) said on Wednesday.

The substance was detected in a urine sample collected during the Tour of Spain last month.

Xacobeo rider Garcia Da Pena, along with team mate and Vuelta runner-up Ezequiel Mosquera, had already returned a positive test for hydroxyethyl starch, a plasma substitute that can help improve performance.

Garcia Da Pena's suspension would remain in force until a hearing convened by the Spanish cycling federation (RFEC) determined whether he had violated anti-doping rules, the UCI said on their website.

The rider has the right to have his B sample tested.

The doping case follows last week's announcement that Tour de France champion Alberto Contador had failed a test conducted during this year's race.

Spaniard Contador denies doping and said a contaminated piece of meat he had eaten was to blame for the tiny quantity of the anabolic agent clenbuterol detected.

UCI president Pat McQuaid has said the Spanish government should recognise it faces a doping problem in cycling and step up efforts to tackle it.

"If the NESV deal doesn't go through RBS may ultimately intervene.

"I think RBS would be prepared to extend the loans for a short while to allow the sale to go through without putting the club into administration, but if it's all held up too much they might just pull the plug on Hicks and Gillett, meaning the club would be available for purchase anyway."

Clubs can face nine-point penalties if they go into administration although the Premier League is unlikely to want to penalise a club of Liverpool's stature.

The 18-times English champions have picked up just six points from seven games this season.

Liverpool fans wary as end of Hicks, Gillett era looms

Published>Wed, Oct 06 10 11:16 PM

Liverpool supporters are overjoyed at the prospect of owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett being forced out of Anfield but they will not welcome their replacements with open arms.

If New England Sports Ventures complete their proposed buyout of the Premier League club, it is unlikely that United States flags will suddenly become fashionable on the Kop.

"New owners are not walking into a club of supporters with open arms," a statement from supporters group Spirit of Shankly said on Wednesday.

"There will be one gently outstretched hand of welcome while the other hand contains a list of questions that will need honest and open answers before any welcome becomes more warm."

That there are now a host of fan groups like Spirit of Shankly is a demonstration of how unpopular Hicks and Gillett have become over the last three years.

Having been promised that the club would not be borrowed against and that a new stadium was imminent, bafflement was followed by frustration and then anger.

SUPPORTERS CLUB

Les Lawson, chairman of the official supporters club, accepts that any new owner will want to make money but he hopes they will learn from the mistakes of Hicks and Gillett.

"When they took over in 2007, Liverpool were heading for their second Champions League final in three years," Lawson told Reuters.

"Under their mis-management of the club, we didn't qualify for the Champions League last season and we're now in the bottom three after failing to invest any money in the last four transfer windows," he added.

"All they wanted to do was make money and I wouldn't even give them the taxi fare to Speke airport.

"Liverpool are one of the biggest sporting brands in the world and that's something Liverpool can explore and make money from but when you're successful on the pitch, it brings success off the pitch. The most important thing is to get it right on the pitch and then everything else follows."

Only actions will win the supporters over but new owners would be wise to take heed of the depth of feeling among the various groups that have sprung up since 2007.

No public relations spin could have made Hicks and Gillett popular but their reign has been punctuated by major gaffes, from Tom Hicks junior's abusive email to a fan, to the stadium issue and rows over former manager Rafael Benitez.

Spirit of Shankly spokesman James McKenna said it would take time for fans to trust their new custodians.

"We know very little about the new owners," he said. "They seem to have a good track record with their other franchises but people will want to know what they've got planned for this club and how they'll move it forward, how it's financed and what their intentions are.

"People are waiting with baited breath to see what's happening. We need the new owners to not make the same mistakes and learn from that."

A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), that seeks to empower children with sports, had invited the Scottish minister to spend time with underprivileged children to give them a moral boost.

Shona was impressed after spending few hours with these children, and decided to introduce such methods of learning in Scotland.

"The children here love taking part in sports and learning new sport. It also brings the community together and I have been hearing how the community has been coming together, because we talked about some of the issues here and what to do about them," said Shona

"So, it is more than just about the sports more than just about children, it seems to involve the whole community, the parents, which is really good and maybe some lessons for us to learn back in Scotland from what magic bus is doing here," she added.

The children also enjoyed with Shona Robinson, playing games, talking and asking her many questions.

We use a technique called experiential learning, learning by experiencing, learning by doing," said Matthew Spacie, CEO and founder of Magic Bus.

"We use games and sports to instill very important lessons for children around education, around health, around shelter, around behavior around gender. These are very important outcomes and are addressed through the medium of sport," he added. (ANI)

Hameed ignored by domestic teams

Wed, Oct 06 10 10:26 PM

Karachi, Oct 6 (PTI) Pakistan''s Test batsman Yasir Hameed, who made headlines with sensational claims of match-fixing in the team before going back on them, has been ignored by his home regions for the forthcoming National Twenty20 championship that will be held this month in Lahore. Yasir confirmed that neither his home team, Peshawar nor his adopted team, Abbotabad whom he has represented in the past in domestic cricket, had named him in their squads for the popular tournament. "I don''t know the reasons for this myself, no one is telling me anything," he said. Yasir was at the centre of the spot fixing controversy on the recent tour to England when the News of the World tabloid newspaper one week after breaking the story about three Pakistani players deliberately bowling no-balls in the Lords Test released his video interview. In the video, Yasir is heard telling the newspaper reporter that other Pakistani players are involved in betting and corruption and names matches that have been fixed. Yasir later denied that he had ever given the interview and said the video had been recorded secretly and the reporter posed as a sponsor and kept on forcing him to make general statements on the spot fixing issue. The Test batsman who played in two tests in England after a gap of nearly three years was later summoned to the Pakistan high commission for his interview and later released a statement insisting he had accused his fellow players of spot fixing. Sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board said they were not aware why Yasir was not in the Peshawar and Abbotabad teams. "Because we really don''t know of any ban on Yasir from playing domestic cricket from the PCB," one source said. But he admitted that unofficially team officials might have been advised to ignore the Test batsman. Former Test captain Younis Khan who is himself discarded from the national team is leading the Peshawar team in the national Twenty20 event for which pacer Umar Gul also plays. PTI COR PM

Wed, Oct 06 10 10:06 PM

New Delhi, Oct 6 (PTI) Spectators were again missing at the the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, which managed to get ready just in time to host events after the spectacular opening ceremony on October 3. The refurbished stadium was only half full in a day that played host to five disciplines, two of them medal winning events. While the athletes in 100m and 200m sprint seemed pleased with the track, they were troubled by the flies and insects on the track. Journalists and foreign delegates were seen liberally applying insect repelling creams and sprays they had managed to bring inside. The security personnal had once again collected a lot of coins, water bottles and other sundry prohibited items from "Next time do not bring such things," a foreign media scribe was let off with a warning on being found to have carrying a small cosmetic lotion. "The track is good, but I have had to fend off many flies," said an athlete after the 100m women''s heat. A Nigerian athlete, who clocked a win in 100m women''s event said, "The event has been good so far , the track is good." A middle-aged executive had taken a day off to bring his children and friends to view the track events. "I brought them so that they can see live what they usually see on TV," said the executive. "We are going to see the Games and running events," said Laksh Vasan who is a standard five student. With schools being off during the Games parents seemed to be tugging along their children. A lone wheelchair-bound spectator, who was lost finding the directions to the stadium, said, "I am the first wheelchair person who has come to see the events, I was told at the tickets counter. I had made inquiries and found out that they have all the facilities for disabled people but the organization is a mess." "What is going to happen when busloads of such people happen to come," he said. Australian Emily Nolan, who flew in on Tuesday evening with her partner hammer thrower Tim Driesen, said she was not bothered with the extra security ring around Delhi. "There were a lot of security concerns in the press back home, but I feel safe and I rather have more security than less." PTI ANS AH

Indian archers make the semi-final in all four team events

Wed, Oct 06 10 09:27 PM

Tapan Mohanta New Delhi, October 6 (PTI) Notwithstanding an erratic performance by the World Cup champions recurve team, the Indian archers made the semi-finals in all the four team events of the Commonwealth Games at Yamuna Sports Complex here today. The highlight of the day was a delightful peformance by the compound archers who shed their underdogs tag to make men''s and women''s semifinals. Having won the World Cup Stage 4 in Shanghai recently with a record score of 224, Indian men''s recurve trio of Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee and Tarundeep Rai managed a lowly 213 but it was enough for them to get past minnows Sri Lanka who scored 205 en route to the semis. In the last four, the men''s team will lock horns against Australia who downed Canada 218-216. The women''s recurve team of Dola Banerjee, Laishram Bombayla Devi and Deepika Kumari have got a bye into the semis where they will take on Malaysia. Athens Olympian Rai, who lost out in the individual section yesterday, continued his poor run of form shooting two 7s to put the Indian team in jeopardy. But Talukdar was in fine form with three perfect 10s as panic-stricken Indians managed 213 in their final against the lowly Sri Lankans. The other semifinals of the mens recurve bow will be contested by England and Malaysia. In the womens recurve section, India and England, the top two seeds, got byes into the semifinals in a six-team competition. India will take on Malysia who defeated Singapore 205-200. England will take on Canada who shocked Australia 205-201. The recurve semi-finals will be held on October 8. It was a memorable day for the Indian archers in the compound section where the women''s trio of Bheigyabati Chanu, Jhano Hansdah and Gagandeep Kaur hit a purple patch logging 227 to thrash the Aussies who shot 220. Hailing the team effort, compound archery coach Harendra Singh said, "We shot very well and the score is highly impressive. We have never achieved 227 in compound women''s section." He was all praise for Chanu, who hit form with four perfect 10s. "I am really happy for her. She was our best today. Now there is no looking back... We will aim for nothing less than gold," Singh said. The women''s team will take on Canada, while the other semis will be between England and Malaysia. Canada beat Wales 223-222 while Malaysia beat Scotland 227-216 and England beat New Zealand 227-221. The men''s compound trio of Ritul Chatterjee, Ch Jignas and C Srither also made the semifinal pipping New Zealanders 226-225 in the quarterfinals. They will take on Trinidad and Tobago while in the other men''s compound semifinal England will take on Australia. The top three places in the compound section will be decided tomorrow.

Action to be taken against Fkiri, says Australian Sports Minister

Published>Wed, Oct 06 10 09:18 PM

New Delhi, Oct 6 (ANI): The Australian Sports Minister, Mark Arbib has said the Australian Commonwealth Games Association would take strict disciplinary action against wrestler Hassene Fkiri for making a rude gesture to wrestling officials after losing a fight to Indian wrestler at the Commonwealth Games.

Inaugurating a grassroots-level Australian Sports Outreach Programme in the national capital on Wednesday, Arbib termed Australian wrestler Fkiri's conduct as unfortunate and said that such behaviour is unacceptable.

"The Australian Games Association today decided to take some disciplinary action against that wrestler. For that was an unfortunate action by the wrestler. We, as a country, Australia and India are fierce competitors, there is no doubt that on either the cricket pitch but also at the Commonwealth Games," said Arbib.

"But that sort of behaviour is unacceptable from an Australian point of view, and I support the Commonwealth Games and the Australian Commonwealth Games Association's action," he added.

Hassene Fkiri was disqualified for making obscene gestures and unsporting behaviour during the gold-medal bout, which he lost to Anil Kumar.

The Australian was cautioned twice, once for head butting and then for slapping Kumar.

Later, the Australian wrestler was denied the silver medal, which he would have picked up after losing to Anil Kumar in the final match.

Arbib also said that the Australian contingent is happy with the preparations for the Games.

"Globally, about the preparations of the games, there were some issues and the Indian authority, particularly the Chief Minister, the New Delhi government and the New Delhi Police have worked very hard over the past fortnight to ensure that they were fixed and that has allowed the games to ahead and so far they are going well. In terms of some of the media coverage and comments prior, this is not unusual before any big event," said Arbib. (ANI)

Indian cyclists blame the starting machine behind defeat

Wed, Oct 06 10 08:52 PM

New Delhi, Oct 6 (PTI) India lost the best chance of earning a bronze medal in the team sprint category in women''s event by a second and Indian cyclists are blaming the starting machine for their defeat. The fight for the bronze medal was between India and Canada and Indian cyclists faced trouble at the beginning of the race which cost them the second they needed to win. Indian cyclists and spearhead Rameshwori Devi minced no words when she insisted had they been practising with the starting machine, bronze could have belonged to them. "We have never trained on a starting machine. We have may be once practised on it in Sydney in March this year. It has been seven months since that one practise," said the cyclist. Rejni Kumari was the cyclist who faced difficulties with the machine and she said they are not used to the machine and wasted the precious second getting free of the machine. "We''re not used to the machines. In Patiala where we were practising we did not have the machine. Someone would hold the rear wheel and release it at the end of the countdown," said Rejni. "If we were used to the machine maybe then... If we get set on it then it would be good," said Rameshwori. "There wasn''t much difference in the timings. Before we could get out of that machine, they (Canadians) left. That was the difference," said Rejni. A disappointed Romeshwori said they were hoping for atleast one medal but it could not be. "I had the finals (Team Sprint), so I left it in between. I did not concentrate on 25 km point race," said Rejni when asked her reason for not finishing the race. In the evening session, Indian cyclist Mahita Mohan remained sole woman cyclist to qualify for the Round 1 of the Sprint while men face defeat in Sprint race.

Liverpool agree sale but legal battle ahead

Published>Wed, Oct 06 10 08:16 PM

Liverpool's board has agreed to sell the club to the owners of baseball's Boston Red Sox although the fate of England's most successful soccer team could yet be decided in court as an ownership dispute rages on.

The Premier League club said on Wednesday it had accepted a 300 million pounds ($477.6 million) offer from New England Sports Ventures (NESV) but the deal is being complicated by the club facing a legal challenge from its current owners.

On Tuesday, Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett sought to replace two members of the five-man board with their own people in a final bid to retain control with the BBC quoting the pair as saying they would resist any sale that undervalued the club.

Local media reports had suggested Hicks and Gillett were looking for about 600 million pounds.

The proposed deal's price tag of 300 million includes 200 million in writing down all acquisition debt and taking on some additional working capital debts and other liabilities.

The club's American owners would also not have been happy to hear that a sale to NESV has the support of Liverpool's major creditors Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), according to a source familiar with the situation.

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton said he was disappointed the current owners had "tried everything to prevent the deal from happening" but added the potential new owners were the best people for the job and would provide funds for new players.

The legal dispute over board membership will be a key part of whether the sale goes ahead, though with an Oct. 15 deadline looming for the RBS debt to be refinanced the advantage seems to be with the prospective owners rather than the incumbents.

The five-times European champions owe 237 million pounds, mainly to RBS who could decide to take effective control of the club if the date passes without payment.

On Tuesday, Hicks and Gillett attempted to remove managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre from the board and replace them with Mack Hicks and Lori Kay McCutcheon.

"It was the last chance for them to leave Liverpool with their heads high," Broughton, speaking on Sky Sports News, said of the current owners. "It's a pity they've chosen to go this route."

Hicks and Gillett instructed Barclays Capital in April to find a buyer and appointed British Airways chairman Broughton to oversee the sale. He said the American owners had broken written agreements in the boardroom battle.

"Part of the terms of me taking on the role was that they gave a written undertaking that only I could change the board... and they also gave a written undertaking that they would not interfere and frustrate any reasonable sale," he said.

"This is frankly a flagrant abuse of those two written undertakings."

UNPOPULAR OWNERS

Hicks and Gillett bought the Merseyside club in February 2007 for 218.9 million pounds and have been unpopular with fans for burdening it with debt, leaving little money for transfers.

Fans have held many protests calling for their departure, blaming the club's worst start to a season for more than half a century on a lack of new players, and struck a note of caution despite being pleased that they could be getting new owners.

"We've heard all these promises before and it amounted to very little," James McKenna, a representative of the Spirit of Shankly supporters group, told Reuters.

"Supporters will be looking at how they (NESV) are going to finance it and how they are going to pay for the new stadium."

Broughton sought to allay such fears, saying NESV wanted to create a 60,000-seater stadium in a "short timetable" -- be it a new ground or an expansion of Anfield -- and also pointed to their track record with the Red Sox.

"NESV's philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at Red Sox," he said, referring to the two World Series the team won in 2004 and 2007 after an 86-year wait. The first title came two years after the takeover by NESV, headed by multi-millionaire John W Henry.

The Liverpool deal will require Premier League approval although the legal dispute is the main issue.

"The legal battle is critical," said Wyn Grant, professor of football economics at Warwick University.

The Merseyside team would face a nine-point penalty if the club went into administration -- which would take their Premier League tally into negative territory as they have just six points from seven games and are in the relegation zone.

Team spirit key to success: Dhoni

Wed, Oct 06 10 07:52 PM

Bangalore, Oct 6 (PTI) A day after leading India to a narrow one-wicket victory over Australia in the first Test at Mohali, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today credited the success of the past one and a half years to the collective effort of the entire team. "It is a real pleasure to captain the best Test team in the world. We have played consistent cricket for the last one-and-half-years, during which we have also battled through injuries," said Dhoni after being named captain of the ICC''s World Test XI during the governing body''s annual awards ceremony here. However, Dhoni admitted that injuries to key players is a cause of concern. "Most of the players even in the current side have got major or minor niggles and yet, we are playing good cricket. I feel, I have got a tremendous side that has the grit and determination to do well for the country. That makes me feel proud," Dhoni said. Recollecting the mood in the dressing room during the tense run-chase in the Mohali Test, Dhoni said, "The dressing room was filled with superstitions. We there were contributing our best through superstitions." The Indian skipper said he was proud to be a part of a historic match and lauded tailender Ishant Sharma''s gritty partnership with VVS Laxman, which proved to be match-winning in the end. "I think the way Ishant contributed with the bat was good. I am glad that I was part of a Test Match that will go into the history as one of the great Test matches that has ever been played," he said.
