Berhampur (Orissa), Oct 6 (PTI) People of Berhampur celebrated today as K Ravi Kumar of the southern Orissa town won the gold medal in weightlifting in Commonwealth Games. Twenty-two year old Ravi not only won the gold medal but also set a record in the men''s 69-kg category with lifting total of 321-kg in the history of the Games. Friends of Ravi celebrated the occasion by bursting crackers near the Veera Hanuman Club, while the sports lovers in the town distributed sweets. Despite rains, the sports lovers and his friends thronged Ravi''s house at Golapalli street immediately after the news about his victory spread to congratulate his family members. His mother K Suriya Kanta and sister Preelata offered sweets to the visitors. "I am very much happy as my son has brought proud for the state," his mother reacted, while his sister said "we could not believe as he went to such a stage." Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Governor M C Bhandare congratulated Ravi, while the Indian Olympic Association announced a cash reward of Rs one lakh for him. Ravi has not only brought glory to the town, but entire state as well as the country, said Biswanath Patra, a former weightlifter in the town. A weightlifting trainer at the Army Sports Institute (ASI), Pune, Ravi had won the three gold medals and a silver medal in the senior national weightlifting championship held in Rajasthan on March 2 last.
