Raj Royals tie-up gives Linc visibility in new markets

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 03:25 AM

With Rajasthan Royals in the race for the semi-finals in IPL-3, at least one Kolkata-based firm is rejoicing. Linc Pens, whose brand ambassador is Shah Rukh Khan, became associate sponsor of the Royals for this season of Twenty20 cricket. SRK's Knight Riders are almost out of IPL.

Said Deepak Jalan, MD, Linc Pens: "We wanted to tie up with one of the eight teams, but we finally struck a deal with the Royals." Jalan pointed out that he explored the opportunity to tie up with KKR for their uniforms, "but all their properties had been sold". But he said Linc Pens was a regional partner of KKR.

The tie-up with Royals - Linc Pen's logo is on the team trousers -- has given the company brand visibility in markets like Ahmedabad and Jaipur, the home grounds of the team, "two markets we are trying to develop". Jalan said the association with IPL is "a beginning for us". According to industry estimates, though different properties cost differently, a logo on the trousers would range from Rs 1-1.5 crore, while those on the jerseys costs Rs 3 crore and above.

For Linc Pens, the highest revenue earner is the eastern region, followed by the north. "We are still developing the brand in the south and west," said Jalan. While the writing instruments industry is pegged at Rs 2,500 crore, 30% of it is unorganized. The industry is growing at 8-10%.

Red Star fan critical after Serbian Cup violence

Published Thu, Apr 15 10 03:09 AM

A Red Star Belgrade fan was taken to hospital in critical condition after sustaining a firearm wound during a Serbian Cup semi-final soccer match on Wednesday, a local clinic said.

"A 20-year old fan has sustained an abdominal wound from a firearm, he is undergoing surgery and is in critical condition," Anlave clinic director Slobodan Ivanovic was quoted as saying by Belgrade's B92 television.

"He was rescuscitated on the scene after a fight broke out midway through the second half of the match and two other individuals sustained minor injuries," Ivanovic added.

"The fan was rushed to hospital by our ambulance from the stadium immediately after the incident, which took place in the north tier occupied by Red Star supporters."

Serbian soccer has been rife with violence in the past 10 years and fights between rival fans have often resulted in fatalities.

Most recently, a French fan died in a Belgrade hospital last September after he was brutally beaten up by Partizan Belgrade fans ahead of the team's Europa League match with French side Toulouse.

Red Star beat city rivals OFK 1-0 on Wednesday with a late goal from striker Dejan Lekic to reach their first Serbian Cup final since 2007, with holders Partizan playing Vojvodina Novi Sad in the other semi-final on Thursday.

Challengers beat Royals, book IPL semi-final berth

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 12:39 AM

Jaipur, April 15 (IANS) Last year's finalists Royal Challengers Bangalore sailed into the semi-finals of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a convincing five-wicket win over the Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium here Wednesday.

Kevin Pietersen made a breezy 29-ball 62 runs as Royal Challengers, set a target of 131, made 132 for five in 15.4 overs.

With the loss, only a miracle can now help Rajasthan Royals qualify for the last four as they have 12 points from 13 matches and a negative run rate of -0.421.

It was an all-round show by the Royal Challengers as put into field, they first restricted the Rajasthan team to 130 for six in 20 overs. And then the batsmen went on knocking off the runs quickly with Man of the Match Pietersen scoring his second IPL fifty.

Royal Challengers suffered an early blow as veteran Jacques Kallis failed to open his account and departed in the second over after being bowled out by Kamran Khan.

But Pietersen along with young opener Manish Pandey (14) added 36 runs for the second wicket to bring some stability to the innings.

Pietersen and Uthappa (26) added another valuable 60 runs for the third wicket to take Royal Challengers on the threshold of a deserving victory. Pietersen hit 10 fours and two sixes during his flashy innings while Uthappa smashed two fours and a six in his 21-ball stay.

Pietersen, Uthappa and Virat Kohli (14) departed in quick succession as Royal Challengers slumped from 102 for two to 119 for five.

Ross Taylor (10 not out) and Rahul Dravid (5 not out) took Royal Challengers to home safely.

Earlier in the day, Rajasthan Royals failed to recover from a top-order collapse and got just 130 runs on board.

Fast bowler Panjak Singh struck twice as half the side was back in the pavilion for just 58 runs in the 12th over.

Abhishek Raut (32 not out) and Adam Voges (28 not out) came up with some sterling display down the order as Rajasthan managed to cross the 100-run mark. Shane Watson also scored a valuable 22.

Published Thu, Apr 15 10 12:13 AM

A spot on the United States Fed Cup squad was left open for Serena or Venus Williams by captain Mary Joe Fernandez on Wednesday as she named her team for a semi-final showdown against Russia.

With world number one Serena Williams and her sister Venus battling injuries, 18-year-old Melanie Oudin will lead the Americans into the April 24-25 tie in Birmingham, Alabama.

Also named to the U.S. squad were Bethanie Mattek-Sands and world's top ranked doubles player Liezel Huber.

"Melanie, Liezel and Bethanie are ready to represent the U.S. again and take on a formidable Russian team for the chance to return to the Fed Cup Final," Fernandez said in a statement.

"We are leaving the fourth spot open in case Venus or Serena is healthy enough to compete.

"The plan is to give them as much time as possible and we hope to make a decision early next week."

Serena, slowed by knee problems, has not been back on court since beating Justine Henin in the Australian Open final in January while Venus has not played since losing to Kim Clijsters in Miami earlier this month.

Oudin, who shot up the standings in 2009 after a breakthrough year, is currently ranked a career-high number 36.

Bangalore''s all round show keep them in semifinal hunt

Published Wed, Apr 14 10 11:55 PM

Dinesh Sharma Jaipur, Apr 14 (PTI) Royal Challengers Bangalore enhanced their chances of making the IPL semifinals as they humbled Rajasthan Royals by five wickets here today to move to the second spot in the points table. Chasing a modest 131 to win, Bangalore overhauled the target with 4.2 overs to spare as Kevin Pietersen (62) hit an attacking half-century to steer his side to easy win. Earlier, the pace bowlers of the Bangalore exploited the slow nature of the strip brilliantly at the Swai Man Singh stadium to restrict the hosts to a modest 130 for six, making rival skipper Shane Warne rue his decision to bat. With this win, Bangalore are now sitting second in the table with 14 points behind Mumbai Indians and would look to seal the semifinal spot when they take on the table-toppers on Saturday. Rajasthan, who remain in fifth position, would now have to beat Kolkata Knight Riders by a huge margin the same day and hope results of other matches also go in their favour. Pietersen made a good return to the side as his attacking brand of play, in the company of equally destructive Uthappa, ensured that his side win the crucial encounter comfortably. They raised a quick-fire 60-run partnership for the third wicket which ended when Uthappa (26) was stumped by Warne. Pietersen''s blistering knock came off just 29 balls and was laced with 10 boundaries and two six while Uthappa hit two fours and a six in his 21-ball cameo. The English batsman made his intent clear when he creamed Kamran Khan for three fours and a six in the fourth over. Warne made quick changes but Pietersen was batting like a man-on-mission and welcomed Adam Voges with three boundaries in the sixth over. At half-way mark, Bangalore were placed comfortably at 91 for two. Warne was not spared either as Pietersen hit him for a four and a six in the 11 over. However the wily Australian broke the partnership by having Uthappa stumped. Pietersen''s breezy knock met with a sad as a terrible mix up with Virat Kohli (14) spelt his run out. Earlier, such was the control of the Bangalore bowlers that only 14 fours were scored and the only six which was hit in the entire Rajasthan innings came in the last over. Abhishek Raut was the top scorer for the hosts with his unbeaten 32 and it was his undefeated seventh-wicket partnership of 58 runs with Voges (28) that helped the side set at least a modest target. Drafted into the playing XI today, Pankaj Singh (2/27) was the most successful bowler for the visitors with two wickets while Dale Steyn, Jacques Kallis and R Vinay Kumar took one wicket each.

CORRECTED - Kroenke has deep enough pockets for Rams and Arsenal

Stan Kroenkein this July 10, 2008 file photo. Sports and real estate investor Stan Kroenke...

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 11:49 PM

Sports and real estate investor Stan Kroenke could have his cake and eat it too, buying both the St Louis Rams American football team and English Premier League soccer club Arsenal.

The Missouri native on Monday said he would exercise his right to buy the 60 percent of the National Football League Rams he does not own, which will likely cost up to $450 million.

Some Arsenal watchers said the Rams deal likely precludes a takeover by Kroenke of one of the most traditional English soccer teams that Forbes magazine last year valued at $1.2 billion, but analysts are not buying that logic.

"Stan and his family have sufficient wealth that they can do both Arsenal and the Rams acquisition without any major problem," said Marc Ganis, president of sports consulting firm Sportscorp Ltd.

"Financially, the issue is not one or the other. He and his family are legitimate multibillionaires and have tremendous borrowing capacity," added Ganis.

Ganis represented the Rams during the team's relocation from Los Angeles to St. Louis in 1995 that included Kroenke's purchase of a piece of the team.

Kroenke, whose fortune Forbes has estimated at $2.7 billion, also owns the National Basketball Association's Denver Nuggets, National Hockey League Colorado Avalanche, Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids and National Lacrosse League Colorado Mammoth.

He also possesses a regional sports TV network, a sports arena and soccer park, and a real estate portfolio that includes shopping centers, office and apartment buildings, vineyards and ranches throughout North America.

Adding control of the Rams and 124-year-old Arsenal would make him arguably the biggest team owner in sports.

"That would be one hell of a sports empire. He'd be king of the world," said Robert Tillis, chief executive of Inner Circle Sports, a merchant bank focused on the sports industry.

The company is running the sale of English Championship (second division) soccer club Sheffield Wednesday.

HURDLES AHEAD

There are many hurdles for Kroenke to overcome, however, if that is his goal, analysts said.

Shahid Khan, owner of auto parts supplier Flex-N-Gate Corp in Urbana, Illinois, agreed in February to buy the 60 percent stake in the Rams owned by Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez in a deal valuing the team at $750 million.

With NFL rules capping team debt at $150 million, the price tag is likely to be between $360 million and $450 million.

However, the NFL prohibits owners from controlling a club in another major U.S. team sport in a different city -- a rule league officials have suggested will not change.

"We're going to respect our policies and make sure we treat everyone the same," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said last month. "We have great respect for Stan and he has to make some choices."

Some analysts said it could get ugly between Kroenke and the league.

"This is going to be a mess with the NFL," said one sports banker, who asked not to be identified discussing an ongoing deal. "He either sells the Avalanche and Nuggets or he cannot, under current NFL rules, buy the Rams."

Nevertheless, the banker expects Kroenke to try to keep all his teams. "The league's going to have a tiger by the tail."

Officials with Kroenke Sports Enterprises (KSE), which owns the Denver teams, said the owner has no mind to sell.

"Mr. Kroenke and his family remain fully committed to Denver and each KSE-owned property," KSE executive vice president Paul Andrews said in a statement on Tuesday.

An NFL spokesman said no timetable has been set for Kroenke's offer to be reviewed or voted on by owners.

With credit markets still tight and franchise values hurt by the recession, others think the NFL will welcome the chance to add the stability of Kroenke's wealth and expect the league to change or modify the rule.

"The NFL is like a big subdivision where if one house sells below the market value that really impacts all the other houses," said Robert Boland, professor of sports management at New York University.

"At the end of the day, I can't imagine that the NFL owners don't like the idea of bringing in a guy whose family household net worth is almost $6 billion," added Boland.

He was referring also to Kroenke's wife Ann Walton Kroenke, of the Walmart Walton family, whose net worth is estimated at $2.9 billion.

Kroenke could even turn around after buying the Rams and sell shares to recoup some of his expenditure, Boland said.

INTENTIONS UNKNOWN

Meanwhile, no one knows Kroenke's intentions for Arsenal. He has raised his stake to just shy of the 30 percent threshold that would require a mandatory takeover offer.

One of Arsenal's biggest shareholders, Nina Bracewell-Smith, has decided to sell her stake of almost 16 percent, setting the stage for a possible showdown between Kroenke and Russian steel magnate Alisher Usmanov, who has a 26-percent stake.

Usmanov's Red & White has said it remains a "committed long-term investor".

Roger Noll, professor emeritus of economics at Stanford University, speculated Kroenke may simply be taking advantage of a weak market to scoop up undervalued sports assets.

Others wonder why Kroenke would want to leave himself open to criticism similar to that faced by Premier League champions Manchester United's American owners, the Glazer family.

"He's got the best of all possible worlds with Arsenal," said the banker who asked not to be identified. "He owns a big economic slug. He doesn't have to be criticized for being the control owner. What's the benefit of him taking it over?"

Analysts agree, however, that whatever the outcome, the next several months will offer great entertainment.

"It's going to be very interesting to see how this unfolds," Inner Circle's Tillis said.

Twitter and profanity in Wisden? It's not cricket!

A Twitter page is displayed on a laptop computer in Los Angeles October 13, 2009....

Published Wed, Apr 14 10 11:29 PM

The bible of cricket has launched itself into the world of social media with a section on Twitter complete with a gratuitous profanity that will shock gin-sipping colonels out of their striped ties.

The Wisden Cricketers' Almanack 2010 edition features a section called "Cricket on Twitter", complete with a supposedly unprintable four-letter word -- the first, in fact, that has appeared in the Almanack, according to the Daily Telegraph newspaper whose cricket correspondent is Wisden's editor.

"Any readers offended by this alarming development can blame both the editor -- our own Scyld Berry -- and the emerging England all-rounder Tim Bresnan, who used the word in what was described as "a foul-mouthed rant" on the social networking service in October," the Telegraph wrote on Wednesday.

Bresnan was upset because a fellow Twitter user had posted a digitally altered picture that emphasised his girth after he suffered jokes about his appetite on the micro-blogging site, mostly at the hands of England team mates.

Bresnan decided that the user who had posted the picture, and whom he did not know, had crossed the line and wrote back.

He wrote: "Don't mind my mates dishing it out but who the f--- are you," according to the Telegraph.

Wisden decided to include the message uncensored, in an item on cricket making the news because of Twitter.

Done nothing wrong...I stand with my head held high: Tharoor

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 10:55 PM

New Delhi, April 14 (ANI): Breaking silence over the ongoing controversy about his alleged links with the Kochi IPL team and the Opposition's demand for his resignation as a minister, Shashi Tharoor, the Minister of State for External Affairs, on Wednesday said that he has done nothing wrong and stands his head held high.

The minister has been accused first by IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi and by the BJP and Left of inappropriate links to the Kochi IPL team bought last month for Rs. 1530 crores.

Tharoor, in an interview with NDTV, talked about a host of issues that have been linked to him and turned into controversy by various quarters.

"I have done nothing wrong, I stand with my head held high," Tharoor said.

"I'm still reeling...I've spent a lifetime in international public life without the slightest taint on my integrity... It's the one thing I never thought anybody would have any excuse to say against me," Tharoor stated.

About his role in the Kochi IPL team, Tharoor explained that he "wanted to see cricket coming to life in Kerala" and: "As an elected representative of my State, I said let me try and help get an IPL team to my State. I've mentored a group of business people of which I am not a part..and they have participated in a fair and transparent manner."

Asked about charges of quid pro quo-that he used his ministerial office to lobby for the team that won the bid and that in return, his close friend, Sunanda Pushkar was rewarded with a gift of Rs. 70 crores in equity, Tharoor said: "How on earth can any minister use influence to get an outcome guaranteed from a closed process? I didn't even know the amount this team was going to pay... there were 5 bidders after all...no minister can guarantee the numbers of the other bidders. How could I use my ministerial power to guarantee the outcome?"

Referring to Pushkar, he said, "Our media cannot accept an attractive woman as a serious business professional."

He added: "She is one of several people in the consortium. She is a senior business professional who has worked in brand management. I'm not a part of this business arrangement but this is sweat equity...she has to earn it. Right now, nobody is making any money...there may be profits later."

Tharoor stressed his "involvement has nothing whatsoever to do with her."

Tharoor said that he is "recently close to Pushkar...only recently...but close."

On charges of Sunanda being a proxy for Tharoor, he said: "That means I'm really dumb. If I wanted to be corrupt then would I do it like this." And added that it was: "Insulting to say an attractive woman can't be a successful businesswoman."

Tharoor said that the Rendezvous Sports World, which is the main owner of the team, told him that they were under considerable pressure from Modi to walk away.

Meanwhile, in another interview to NDTV, the CEO of the consortium, Shailendar Gaekwad, said that Modi offered the group 50 million dollars to sell the team.

Tharoor described this " as a closed shop was operating and they breached this by winning (the bid)."

He also said that Modi's version that Tharoor called him to ask that he not disclose the real ownership of the team including Pushkar's, was incorrect.

Tharoor said that in fact, he called Modi to ask why the process of transfer of ownership was taking unnaturally long. He says any request to withhold information on the owners was aimed at protecting the confidentiality of all IPL ownership agreements.

On resistant to releasing info, Tharoor said: "Simply ..because there was a confidentiality." "What was the motive for doing so for only one team. Turned out to be a malicious intent." "If Lalit has recorded the conversations, let him release these recordings."

"I thought I knew the man(Modi), but it turns out I didn't. Sad thing for me .. I've been vilified for something that hardly takes a percent of my time each week. Suddenly this has coloured my reputation across the country," said Tharoor.

The Opposition has demanded that Tharoor be sacked, and his party has distanced itself from the minister, describing this as a personal matter and one that the minister should explain.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, presently on a weeklong tour to the U.S. and Brazil, has said he will examine the facts before deciding whether any action is required.

On Wednesday evening, Congress party President Sonia Gandhi held a meet with senior party leaders to discuss the Tharoor controversy.

Moreover, BJP has confirmed it will bring up the issue in parliament on Thursday.

On Congress party's role during the controversy, Shashi Tharoor said that his party has not left him out in the cold, and that "resigning would mean I've given up."

Tharoor said he would convey the details of his relationship with the Kochi Indian Premier League (IPL) to Sonia Gandhi and the Prime minister. (ANI)

Pranab Mukherjee summons Tharoor to discuss 'IPL-gate'

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 10:25 PM

New Delhi, Apr 14 (ANI): Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday summoned Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor to discussed controversy over his links with the Kochi Indian Premier League (IPL).

Mukherjee's summons came hours after Congress President Sonia Gandhi discussed the matter with senior party leaders and senior Union Ministers.

Tharoor is at the centre of a controversy over IPL team that was sold to Kochi last month for 1530 crores.

One of Tharoor's close associate Sunanda Pushkar, was gifted equity worth 70 crores by the team-owners.

On Monday, in a comment on social networking site twitter, the IPL commissioner Lalit Modi revealed details of Kochi team's stakes.

In Washington, the Prime Minister Manmohan Sigh who is on a week long visit to the US and Brazil, said he would take any action, if required, after he returned.

"I do not know the facts," said Manmohan Singh, adding that he could not go by what the media was reporting on the issue.

Meanwhile, in an interview to a private news channel Tharoor maintained that his party has not left him out in the cold and declined to resign from the Cabinet over the issue.

"Resigning would mean I've given up," Tharoor said.

Tharoor said he would convey details of his relationship with the Kochi IPL team to Sonia Gandhi and the Prime minister Singh.

"I have done nothing wrong, I stand with my head held high," he said.

The Income Tax Department is reportedly gearing up for a formal inquiry to check source of funds of Rendezvous Sports World, the group that bought the Kochi team.

The Bahratiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded that the Prime Minister Singh to sack Tharoor for inappropriate "patronage and protection".

The BJP alleges that Pushkar was a front for Tharoor, and that the CBI must investigate Tharoor for "criminal misconduct by a public servant" in what it describes as "a copybook case of corruption."

The Left has joined in with a statement released on Wednesday in which the Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPM) said: "It is highly inappropriate for a minister in the Union government to be involved in such murky dealings...It is incumbent upon Mr Tharoor to step down from office till his name is cleared of any unethical or irregular behaviour." Ghosal in quarters of Indian Challenger Squash tourney

Published Wed, Apr 14 10 09:59 PM

Kolkata, Apr 14 (PTI) India''s top Squash player Saurav Ghosal began his PSA Indian Challenger campaign in style, walloping Aaron Frankcomb of Australia 11-4 11-6 11-5 at the Calcutta Racket Club here today. It took the national champion just 42 minutes to book a quarterfinal berth, as Ghosal''s opponent simply had no answers to his winners and precise drop-shots. The first set was just a mere formality as Frankcomb was all at sea adjusting to the pace and bounce of the court before committing plenty of unforced errors. The world number 43 did put up a fight in the second set to take a 4-2 lead. But losing his temper over certain decisions of the referee together with his errors, Frankcomb squandered the advantage, while Ghosal lifted his game during crucial junctures to pile on the Aussie''s agony. However, Ghosal''s real test lies on tomorrow when he locks horns with top-seed Adrian Grant. "I need to play much better than how I did today. It''s important not to let Adrian gain his rhythm. I will have to create a structure that puts Adrian out of his comfort zone," stressed Ghosal. Grant, on the other hand, did face a few difficulties on his way to a 11-7 9-11 11-3 11-7 win over qualifier Chris Simpson. In fact, his compatriot made him stretch for almost all points before bowing down finally to Grant''s class and experience. In other matches, second-seed Cameron Pilley of Australia got through qualifier Nafiizwan Adnan 11-6 7-11 11-8 11-6, while Malaysian Mohammand Azlan Iskandar ousted India''s Siddharth Suchde 11-5 11-6 11-5. In the Women''s section, both Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal had easy rides in the first round. Fourth-seed Dipika made short work of England''s Zephanie Curgenven, brushing her aside 11-3 11-2 12-10 in just 24 minutes. Joshna had a minor hiccup in the second set, but eventually beat Australian Maggy Marshall 11-6 9-11 11-3 11-6. PTI SHN

Lacklustre Murray out of Monte Carlo Masters

Andy Murray of Britain stumbles during his second round match against Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany...

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 09:49 PM

Briton Andy Murray was sent packing from the Monte Carlo Masters when he suffered an embarrassing 6-2 6-1 defeat to German Philipp Kohlschreiber on Wednesday.

The world number four never found his stride as clouds started to gather above centre court at the Monte Carlo Country Club and he got a few boos from the crowd after going down in just over an hour.

The Scot's terrible first serve percentage was a godsend for Kohlschreiber, who punished his resigned opponent with forehand winners throughout.

Murray should at least get an honourable mention for his honesty after the match.

"I wasn't very good today," he said. "It was the first time in a few years that the court felt so small.

"I just could not find the court. When it's like that, it's difficult to play."

World number 33 Kohlschreiber first broke with a delightful drop shot in the fourth game. From then on, Murray did not appear to put up much of a fight in front of former great Ilie Nastase who was watching from the stands, a pink sweater draped around his neck.

Kohlschreiber wrapped up the opening set when one of his shots hit the tape of the net and bounced above a raging Murray.

"I tried different things. I tried serve and volleying a couple of times. I tried hitting some high balls. It did not really make a whole lot of difference," Murray commented.

The Briton took the first game of the second set as Kohlschreiber fired a forehand long.

But it was then over for Murray, who bowed out with a weak backhand into the net.

Kohlschreiber will next face compatriot Philipp Petzschner for a place in the quarter-finals.

Bhutia might make a comeback in tomorrow''s I-League tie

Published Wed, Apr 14 10 09:25 PM

Kolkata, Apr 14 (PTI) India captain Bhaichung Bhutia is expected to make a comeback when a struggling East Bengal take on another lowly-placed outfit Mumbai FC in a battle for survival in I-League round 21 tie at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here tomorrow. East Bengal coach Philippe de Ridder today named the inspirational striker in the 18-member squad, even as the Belgian was tightlipped about Bhutia''s availibility in the first XI. The Sikkimese sniper last played against Mahindra United in a I-League match on March 13 after which he pulled a hamstring muscle. After conducting an MRI, it was found that the Indian skipper would be sidelined for next 3-4 weeks and later he started training under fitness and nutrition expert Monica Ahluwalia who had earlier worked with Australian club, Sydney FC. Sanju Pradhan, the other striker of East Bengal, had also sustained a small injury a couple of days before. But in all probability he will be fit to take the field tomorrow, a team official said. Tomorrow''s match is very important for both the teams as a victory will take them out of the shadow of playing in the second division of the I-league next season. Out of the 14 teams, former champions East Bengal are now occupying the eleventh spot with 21 points from 19 matches. (MORE) PTI CORR TAP NIK SHN

Now Modi's ties with Rajasthan, Kings XI questioned

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 09:19 PM

New Delhi, April 14 (IANS) The Rajasthan Cricket Association's (RCA) secretary Sandeep Dixit, a friend turned foe of Lalit Modi, raised some serious questions on the Indian Premier League (IPL) chief's interest in some of the franchisess.

'I want to ask Lalit, how the franchise contract for the Jaipur team was signed by Jaipur IPL when the bid was by Emerging Media? Do disclose the details about your brother-in-law and step-son and their back-door entries into Jaipur IPL and GCV Mauritius. What I meant was Gaurav Burman, your step son-in-law. Who is Mohit Burman and how is he an investor in Kings XI Punjab?' Dixit, a senior IAS officer in the Rajasthan government, tweeted on social networking site Twitter.

'I love him (Modi) dearly. I am only seeking info,' he wrote on the site.

Modi, who is also regular on Twitter, however, stayed away from commenting on Dixit's tweet.

A disappointed Dixit wrote: 'Lalit is not answering my simple questions. Any ideas what should be done?'

Modi's brother-in-law Suresh Chelaram apparently holds the maximum 44.1 percent stake in Rajasthan Royals while Gaurav's brother Mohit is the co-owner of Kings XI Punjab.

Yuvraj an integral part of the team: KXIP

Published Wed, Apr 14 10 08:55 PM

Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI) Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) today welcomed Yuvraj Singh''s statement that he has no intentions of leaving the team and said the stylish left-hander was an important player who had contributed a lot to the side''s performance in all three seasons of the Twenty20 league. "Yuvraj is an integral part of KXIP. We are happy that he would like to stay with KXIP. He is a valuable player and has contributed immensely to the team''s performances in all the three seasons of IPL," said KXIP chief executive officer Anil Srivatsa in a statement. Srivatsa''s response came in the wake of the flamboyant southpaw''s clarification that he never wanted to leave KXIP and enjoyed playing for the Mohali-based team in the Indian Premier League. "At no time have I said I''ll shift to another team. I''ve always enjoyed playing for Kings XI," Yuvraj had said. Yuvraj''s clarification came a day after KXIP co-owner Mohit Burman said that the team management could not do much if the player had already decided to part ways. "If he has given such a hint, what can I do? It''s upto him," said a peeved Burman. "After the season is over, we will speak to him. But at the end of the day, you cannot force people to stay if they don''t want to," he said.

Fourth IPL will be in first week of April 2011: Modi

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 08:49 PM

Mumbai, April 14 (IANS) The fourth season of the expanded Indian Premier League (IPL), featuring 10 teams, will start in the first week of April after end of the World Cup, the league's chief Lalit Modi said here Wednesday.

'We are going to start the 2011 IPL season a few days after the World Cup in the first week of April. We are going back to the schedule of April-May that we had in the 2008 first season. We will keep this (schedule) in future,' Modi told reporters here.

The fourth edition of the IPL will see the addition of two new cities - Pune and Kochi - and will also have 94 matches, a sharp increase of 34 matches.

During the event, Modi also announced the inaugural IPL awards function, which he called 'Cricketainment' - a mix of cricket and Bollywood-style entertainment - and will take place April 23 here.

'The IPL awards function would be distinct from the ICC and BCCI awards functions. There would be 22 categories of awards with 10 of them to be adjudicated by a jury panel. IPL is also a mix of cricket and entertainment and so the awards ceremony will be Cricketainment. There would be eight other viewers' category awards, three statistical awards and one IPL captains' award,' Modi said.

Taufik is flustered by heavy security cover

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 08:19 PM

New Delhi, April 14 (IANS) Indonesian great Taufik Hidayat finds the unprecedented security at the Badminton Asia Championships here 'disturbing.'

The tournament, which is a test event for the October 3-14 Commonwealth Games, has players from 21 countries participating.

Taufik, who was in Hyderabad last year for the World Championships, said he has never seen such a security cover before and the players are not used to it.

'There is too much of security around. It is more than the Olympics and the Asian Games and it is a bit disturbing for the players. Players do not want to see so many security men around, it affects us psychologically,' he said.

Japanese head coach and former South Korean doubles exponent Park Joo-bong had also expressed similar views Tuesday.

Taufik, Olympic champion and three times World Champion, has happy memories of India, having won the singles title at the Indian Open last year.

He looked in good touch as he breezed through to the third round here Wednesday, demolishing Nepal's Indra Mehta 21-6, 21-9 in the first round and then outclassed Vietnam's Ha Anh Le 21-10, 21-16, in the second.

'In India, I get a lot of crowd support. I won the Indian Open last year, but now I am taking one game at a time as there are some very good players in the draw,' said Taufik, six-time winner of the Indonesian Open.

'I was a bit casual in my second match and he pushed me to a fair distance. But I came back strongly, which is a good thing.'

The 28-year-old is happy with the facilities at the Siri Fort stadium.

'The facility here is good, the best I have seen in India and that includes Hyderabad. It is a little dusty though and you also have to be conscious of the inconsistent draught.'

Some of the big names are missing from the Championships, but Taufik said the tournament is still very competitive with a number of quality players capable of beating anyone on a given day.

'Though some of the players have not come, it is still a strong field with Lin Dan, Long Chen and a couple of other good players in the draw,' he said.

Bindra''s Olympic feat picked best-ever in Indian sports

Published Wed, Apr 14 10 08:09 PM

Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI) The gold medal fetched by rifle shooter Abhinav Bindra in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the country''s first-ever individual yellow metal in the Games long history, has been chosen by ''All Sports'' magazine as the greatest Indian sporting achievement of all time. The magazine, in its third anniversary special issue of April 2010, has also nominated chess ace Viswanathan Anand as the greatest-ever sports person from the country. Anand got this accolade "for his feat of winning three chess world championships in different formats as well as numerous other tournaments in the elite division and single handedly igniting a chess revolution in the country," said the magazine in a media release today. The Chennai wizard has usurped this distinction over the heads of other deserving claimants like Dhyan Chand, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Geet Sethi, Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, among others, the release said. Controversially, the magazine''s jury panel of contributors left out cricket icon Tendulkar from its top-ten list of Indian achievers/achievements in sports. (More) PTI SSR VKV SHN

SRK takes the blame for Knights' poor IPL outing

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 07:49 PM

Kolkata, April 14 (IANS) Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan, taking the blame for his team's poor showing at the ongoing third edition of India Premier League (IPL), has offered 'unconditional apologies to all' and 'no promises anymore'.

'I completely take the blame for not putting up a good enough show... so much love for KKR & I couldn't reciprocate,' Shah Rukh Khan tweeted after his Knights were mauled by the Chennai Super Kings in an IPL outing Tuesday.

SRK did not hide his frustrations and was candid enough after the Knights' poor show at the Chidambaram stadium where his franchise lost by nine wickets.

'Just disappointed. Can't do any more for KKR. Sorry can't sound fakely uppity about next season & thanks for support tweets,' he said.

Though mathematically the men in purple still have a remote chance of qualifying for the semi-finals, the Bollywood Badshah sees no light at the end of the tunnel.

'Substance leads to style & glamour. Supporters of KKR, we can say goodbye to IPL now. Better than last year is not good enough.'

'I am not sad. Just feel awful for Kolkata & all of this, most wonderful city & my sponsors. No promises anymore. Bye all.'

KKR may be the most successful franchise commercially, but SRK is not only concerned about the riches -- King Khan says he is emotionally attached to the team.

'Someone just sent a mathematical (ill informed) profit made by KKR. To correct you, not invested million $s just some priceless emotions in KKR.'

'Bye all. I am off now to deal with disappointments in the way I know best. You find your poison. Love you all. Unconditional apologies to all.'

Clearly the expectations were not fulfilled as SRK signed off from his account.

The Kolkata Knights Riders are currently placed seventh on the table with just ten points from 12 matches with a dismal net run rate of -0.632.

Tiger Woods was nicknamed 'Urkel' in college

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 07:39 PM

New York, April 14 (ANI): Tiger Woods was mocked by his college golf teammates while at Stanford University.

According to his soon to be published E! "True Hollywood Story" specials, Woods, now 34, was given the nickname "Urkel," after the nerdy television character on the '90s sitcom "Family Matters, reports Us Magazine.com.

"He felt like it was insulting to him, he felt like it was borderline racist. It just made him feel like he was back in high school again," the New York Daily News quoted a pal as saying in the clip.

But despite all this, Woods never let his game suffer.

CBS sports caster Jim Hill said: He could walk on the golf course, walk right by you and not even acknowledge you. That's not because he's arrogant, that's just because he has a job to do. (ANI)

Coming back from injury, Aditi makes a winning start

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 06:59 PM

New Delhi, April 14 (IANS) Aditi Mutatkar is no stranger to injuries and comebacks. The young Pune girl was all smiles Wednesday after her thrilling opening round triumph over Singapore's Fu Mingtian in the Badminton Asia Championships and feels the win has given her the much needed confidence after a two a month injury absence.

Once touted as the most talented among Indian women players, Aditi's career has been strewn with injuries, which has time and again marred her potential stride to the top.

She showed signs of revival in December when she reached the final of Syed Modi International Grand Prix but soon found herself out of action with a dodgy right knee.

'It is a good win for me. I desperatley wanted to win. The way I rallied back in the match has given me a lot of confidence. It is a good way to start after a two-month break,' an excited Mutatkar said after her 21-11, 17-21, 21-18 win at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.

'I have an exprience of comebacks. So I knew how to approach the match. During my last injury break, I realised that my approach to the game is the same, I am dedicated towards the game, I needed to pay attention to minor things,' she said.

'So, whether it was icing my knee three to four times a day or me wearing a long knee cap today, this time I have taken care of everything. I have become more professional in my aproach. At the end, everything depends on how strong you are mentally.'

The 23-year-old said she is taking one match at a time.

'I am taking a match at a time. I am not thinking about the tournament. Today, I just wanted to go out there and play as I needed to win badly. I was trailing in the last game but I rallied to make it 13-13 and that turned things for me. The way I pulled off the last game is a big high for me,' said Mutatkar.

'My opponent (Mingtian) was also a tough one. This is my first win against her. We had a couple of close games before. I was determined to see that it should not become another case of hard luck. There were long rallies and I am happy that I kept up with her.'

An avid reader, who loves to pen her thoughts, Mutatkar had no issues with the facilities at the Siri Fort complex though she felt they could do better with more crowd presence.

'Crowd could be more. Though there were some last minute delays, but at the end they have managed it well. The drift was a bit uneven. But it is the same for both the players. Usually, all the Asian tournaments have such a problem in the beginning. It is just a matter of adjusting.'

Djokovic coasts into Monte Carlo third round

Serbia's Novak Djokovic hits a returns to France's Florent Serra during their second round match...

Published Wed, Apr 14 10 06:49 PM

Top seed Novak Djokovic eased into the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters with a 6-2 6-3 win over France's Florent Serra on Wednesday.

The world number two, though, could have been more efficient in front of a capacity centre court crowd enjoying the event's first cloudless day at the Monte Carlo country club.

Serbian Djokovic will next face Stanislas Wawrinka, seeded 13th, for a place in the quarter-finals after the Swiss beat Latvia's Ernests Gulbis 6-1 6-4.

Djokovic got off to a flying start, mixing his game with cunning drop shots to open a 4-0 lead.

Serra pulled a break back in a 12-minute fifth game as he started to play more aggressively. Djokovic saw off another break point in the seventh game, following up on his serve to clinch the opening set.

A long forehand by Serra gave Djokovic the early break in the second set but the Frenchman did not capitulate and levelled for 2-2. Djokovic snatched the decisive break in the seventh game and wrapped up victory when his opponent sliced a backhand wide.

Former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero saw off Germany's Benjamin Becker 6-3 6-4 as fellow Spaniard David Ferrer experienced little trouble in a 6-3 6-2 win over Kazakh qualifier Andrey Golubev.

Super Kings looking for win against Delhi Daredevils

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 06:39 PM

Chennai, April 14 (IANS) An upbeat Chennai Super Kings, just one win away from securing a possible semi-final spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL), will be taking on Delhi Daredevils here Thursday in what is billed as a 'quarter-final' game considering that both teams are on 12 points with two matches to play.

The Daredevils, flying into a hot and humid Chennai after suffering three consecutive defeats, were once considered certainties for the semi-finals, but lost their way in the second-half of the tournament that, strangely, coincided with the arrival of England's frontline batsman Paul Collingwood and Kiwi spinner Daniel Vettori.

The three reverses, including a humiliating loss to cellar-dwellers Kings XI Punjab, who bowled out Delhi for 111, saw them veering off-course and into a storm.

In this context, the Daredevils will be under lot more pressure in Thursday's game under lights at Chepauk where last night the Super Kings chalked up a resounding win against the Kolkata Knight Riders to jump four spots to second on the leaderboard.

With five teams on 12 points and Mumbai Indians assured of a semi-final spot, the pressure is on all the contenders and the Super Kings seemed to have handled the situation well to position themselves as one of the favourites for a semi-final berth judging by their positive approach against the Knight Riders.

Super Kings, despite their six defeats, four of them in a row, were on four points at the half-way mark of seven matches. Thereafter, in a dramatic turnaround that did not surprise the discerning, the Super Kings won four of their next five matches, including one against Delhi at the Kotla, and seem to be peaking at the right moment.

Thus, the Daredevils face an onerous task on the morrow, fully aware of the opposition's capability. In the Kotla game, the Super Kings successfully chased a target of 186 with five deliveries to spare with opener Matthew Hayden scoring 93 and Suresh Raina finishing it off with an unbeaten 49.

For all the firepower in their ranks with likes of David Warner, Virender Sehwag, skipper Gautam Gambhir, AB de Villiers and Paul Collingwood, the Daredevils batsmen have not fired in unison or on a consistent basis, leading to the shock defeats. The onus will be on these worthies now to guide the side through troubled waters.

The Delhi bowling attack has been dependant on leg-spinner Amit Mishra and to a lesser extent, seamer Pradeep Sangwan, but with not much support from the other end. The approach, it would seem, has been more about containing than taking wickets.

In contrast, the Super Kings appear to be better placed especially since their so-called weak link, bowling, has been considerably strengthened with the inclusion of Aussie fast bowler Doug Bollinger who has complemented spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin, Muttiah Muralitharan and Shadab Jakati.

Going into Thursday's game, the Super Kings appear more rounded and balanced than the Daredevils and with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni doing a fine job of leading from the front, the hosts will be justified in feeling they have the upper hand.

Rhodes back on the cricket field for ''fun''

Published Wed, Apr 14 10 05:55 PM

Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI) Having retired from the game in 2003, Mumbai Indians fielding coach Jonty Rhodes is yearning to be back on the cricket field but only as long as it''s "fun". "I love my cricket. I would love to be on the pitch only as long as it is fun. I don''t want to get involved in serious stuff," the former South African cricketer told reporters here today. Rhodes, who today took the field during a promotional match between Mumbai Indians and Team Youngistan at the Brabourne Stadium in Cricket Club of India (CCI) here, said the encounter was a memorable experience for him. "It was great to be back. CCI has some great memories for me. I had a wonderful game here in 1993. As the Mumbai Indians fielding coach, we had a good tournament and have been very successful in our home games here. Good to be back here after retiring from the game in 2003. It was good fun," Rhodes, one of the best fielders the game has seen, said. Talking about his rivals at the promotional match, who were selected during a contest by PepsiCo earlier this year, he said, "they were a bit like me... a bit rusty. But they cleared the boundary a few times. It was all about fun." The eight-over a side match was won by the IPL franchisee by three runs.

Vettel set to outshine Schumacher's Shanghai return

Red Bull Formula One driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany celebrates on podium after winning the...

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 05:49 PM

Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher both return to the scene of milestone triumphs at this week's Chinese Grand Prix but it is the younger German who looks more likely to be sipping champagne again on Sunday.

Vettel, who clinched Red Bull's first Formula One race victory in Shanghai last year, will take the lead in the drivers' title race for the first time if he can win back-to-back races after his Malaysia triumph two weeks ago.

Seven-times world champion Schumacher, however, returns to the circuit where he won his last race four years ago fully aware that win number 92 looks anything but likely.

Vettel's victory in Malaysia finally converted the blistering early season pace of the Red Bull into the win that reliability problems had denied him in the first two rounds in Bahrain and Australia.

Even the rain that was lashing down on the Shanghai International Circuit on Wednesday will hold no fear for the confident 22-year-old as it was his imperious drive in similar conditions last year that secured Red Bull their maiden victory.

Schumacher, by contrast, has looked off the pace after three years of retirement, out-qualified by his team mate and compatriot Nico Rosberg in all three races and failing to finish the last.

The 41-year-old did not dominate Formula One for so long by being a quitter, however, and remains resolutely optimistic that improvement is just around the corner.

"Admittedly the last two races have not been very fortunate for me but I am very much aware of the reasons for it," he said in a team release.

"I know how things go in F1 and if you look into the detail of the two races, I think everything is still going according to plan."

Early championship frontrunners Ferrari and McLaren were undone by a torrential downpour in qualifying at Sepang that left their cars battling from the back of the grid but they may look in vain for more predictable weather patterns this weekend.

Brazilian Felipe Massa leads the title race by two points from team mate Fernando Alonso and Vettel, with the Spaniard's engine failure in Malaysia concentrating minds at Ferrari over the last two weeks.

While Lewis Hamilton declared his love for his McLaren car after driving from 20th to sixth in Sepang, his team mate Jenson Button has been less effusive, despite clinching the team's only win of the season in Australia.

The world champion said he had spent the two weeks since finishing eighth in Malaysia working with engineers on the balance of his car.

"I think I've made some real progress," he said. "Of course, it's a continuous process, but the overall feeling is that we're moving forwards."

We'll deal with Kochi matter after IPL-3: Modi

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 05:39 PM

Mumbai, Apr 14(ANI): Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi on Wednesday said he would explain issues related to Kochi team to the league's governing council after the completion of present leg of the IPL.

Modi said: "Will deal with Kochi once the IPL is over. I will also explain my side to the IPL governing council and we have no hidden agenda, no hidden stakes."

Modi expressed reservations over the ownership of the Kochi team and claimed that the owners of Kochi franchise themselves did not know some of the people involved with it.

"With regards to the eight franchisees, we know about all the stake holders, but there are still some doubts over the ownership of the Kochi franchise. Even the people who signed the tender documents don't know who they are," he said.

Modi's statement days after controversy engulfed over giving 19 percent free stakes to Dubai based businessperson Sunanda Pushkar, who is said to be a close friend of Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor.

Modi said he had nothing to hide.

"This is a small issue, but an issue nevertheless," he said.

The controversy surrounded over partnership in Kochi franchise has surrounded as Modi and Tharoor, who are engaged in a spat over the ownership of Rendezvous Sports World.

The Rendezvous Sports World is one of the stake holders in the consortium that bought the Kochi franchise for Rs.1,530 crore.

In a comment on social networking site twitter, Modi claimed that he was asked by Tharoor to not to get into who owns the Rendezvous Sports World.

On Tuesday, Tharoor issued a detailed statement, claiming Modi had acted in "bad faith" in a bid to transfer the IPL franchise from Kerala to some other place (Ahmadabad)

"It has been clear for some time that the real motive is to assign this IPL team elsewhere than Kerala," Tharoor said.

Tharoor had denied having asked Modi not to reveal the identity of the stakeholders.

The cash rich IPL, which has become a one billion dollar revenue entity in the third season this year, had auctioned Kochi and Pune franchise to Rendezvous and Sahara in March for a total of about Rs 3,200 crore. (ANI)

Murray aims to improve his mind game

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 04:39 PM

London, Apr.14 (ANI): British tennis star Andy Murray has said the racket that most concerns him is the one going on inside his head.

The Daily Express quoted Murray, as saying: "It's hard to put your finger on because there's such a lot of stuff goes on. Obviously, things off the court can affect it. You just have to try to make sure you keep all your problems and issues out of it and go back to focusing on tennis, which is my job. Hopefully I'll be able to do that."

At 22, it would only be natural for Murray to ponder at times on his split with girlfriend Kim Sears, whose life he shared for four years - even though there are rumours of a reunion.

But perhaps more enfeebling for Murray is his unfortunate involvement in the devilish politics of a sport he single-handedly carries on his young shoulders.

High on that list is his personal spat with former Davis Cup captain John Lloyd over Murray's attempts to balance his own career objectives and the national cause.

Murray said: "You know the kind of stuff that goes on off the court within tennis. There's the Davis Cup and I've said a few things about the LTA, too. There are a lot of things that can be mentally draining and which you can get subconsciously annoyed or upset about. (ANI)

Game for the challenge ahead

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 03:29 PM

The Lok Sabha may become the next battlefield as the Women's Reservation Bill comes up for approval sometime soon. But in this season of woman empowerment, one place where they are spearheading several important departments with full authority and without any hindrance is the 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC).

At present, this committee comprises almost 40 per cent women, who come from diverse backgrounds, and are working at break-neck speed as D-day or the Opening day draws near. From ticketing to TV rights to hiring volunteers, taking care of the accommodation, advertising, branding and deciding on the image and look of the 19th edition of the Games, these women are bringing in their set of unique skills to all the 34 functional areas of the CGOC.

The chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, Suresh Kalmadi, says he has no reason to be tensed. ''I have delegated the hard work to very able women in my team. It's obviously a challenge to hold something this big and we will encounter a lot of problems on the way. But we'll also find solutions to all of them, thanks to my team-members,'' he says, with less than 200 days to go before the spectacular opening ceremony takes place on October 3.

Monica Jolly, director of ticketing, is busy finalising the last minute details on the website and also clearing the retail outlets in the city where the tickets will be sold.

''About 2.2 million tickets are to be issued. So I also have to manage the call-centre that will deal with people's queries. On a more micro-level, there's also work to be done on the seating plans. Just like in the movies, you can choose your seat-we are providing that facility to the spectator. He can buy the seat that he believes will give him the best view,'' she says.

While the clock ticks

Moti Irani, director of accommodation and travel grant, meanwhile, has been negotiating with hotels to zero in on a flagship brand as well as others for the Games. ''Hotel Ashok has been chosen as the flagship hotel and the spillover will go to Samrat Hotel. Hotel Janpath, Ramada Plaza and the DDA Flats in Vasant Kunj have been roped in for the media,'' she says.

Around 2,562 rooms have been booked in these hotels, along with an additional 2000 rooms at the DDA Flats, Vasant Kunj. Next comes the signing of MoUs with the hotels and preparing the website so that people can book rooms online depending on their specific needs. One very important area in the Games will be about selling TV rights so that the feed reaches all 71 countries participating in the Games.

Upasna Singhal, director of broadcast, on deputation from the Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), is working on selling the TV rights to nine right holders, who in turn will beam the Games to the 71 participant countries. Purnima Pendse, deputy director general of ceremonies, has finished organising an event for the celebration of the 200 days to go into the Games.

''We had put up a 200 ft canvas at India Gate denoting the 200 days left. We invited various artistes, professional and amateurs, to splash their paint on it. The 100th day celebration when the baton arrives will be far bigger,'' she promises.

The job at hand for these women is more complicated than it seems. One wrong step or a miscalculation would mean the whole of the country, the foreign tourists -not to forget the media-will jump in to criticise this prestigious international event that will be a showcase of India's talent, hospitality and cultural diversity.

Manjushree S.Roy, deputy director general, volunteer programme and publicity, who is responsible for recruiting, training, uniforming and planning of the workforce explains, ''The committee has a handful of people executing specialised tasks for the 34 functional areas. But when it comes to the delivery of all the assigned tasks during the Games, it is this nucleus of dedicated and motivational volunteers who will skillfully shoulder the responsibility that they have been trained for.''

Certainly not an easy job at hand. Likewise, danseuses and Padma Shri winner Shovana Narayan, who is the director of ceremonies-though tight-lipped about the events-says she's making sure the city buzzes with cultural activity throughout the entire fortnight. Opening and closing ceremonies apart there will be various programmes to mark winners' achievements at the Games village-activities that inspire athletes who are geared up for their events. Even the medal ceremonies will be culturally rich and will leave the spectator spellbound.

''These athletes have given their best to their countries. And we'll make sure they get a taste of their own country's culture along with the richness and plurality that India can offer. We are combining traditional cultural programmes with popular youth culture to add that zing factor that keeps the young people entertained.''

The sad part is that several years of hard work will come to an end in a matter of 14 days. And for those who've been closely associated with the Games, the last one year, with the rush to meet deadlines at break-neck speed will be the most unforgettable one for its maddening, tensefilled moments.

But what will remain in the mind of the public is the image, the icons, the mascot and the pictographs that Delhi will get to see in a couple of months. Just like Appu, the elephant mascot, is still fondly-remembered by the generation that was young when the Asiad Games took place in 1982, Shera, the tiger, will be remembered in years to come by the generation that's going to witness the biggest sporting event held in their city.

Deciding on image & look

That apart, a huge responsibility is to create a particular image and look that will differentiate this particular Game from the ones to come. Sangeeta Welinkar, additional director general, image and look, says, ''One of the major source of inspiration are the jaalis that you see in the Mughal architecture in Delhi. These jaalis have been digitised for a modern look and the graphic layers add depth to the design. The colour palette, comprising purple, pink, green, red, blue and yellow represent the vibrancy of India.''

As in Athens where the wreath was the inspiration for the Olympic Games in 2004, and in Sydney 2008 the boomerang, the aboriginal hunting stick, the Delhi 2010 logo is inspired by the Ashoka Chakra, the national symbol of freedom, unity and power. The Chakra has 24 spokes, each representing an essential quality in a human being.

The upward curves or movement in the logo represents India???s rise as a superpower. That apart the figurines or pictographs are inspired by the ancient Sanjhi art-they were used to tell stories to people.

''I had gone to Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006 to observe the way they incorporated tradition with modern elements to get the look they created. Even as a co-ordinator for the Pune Youth Games, I've worked on the image-but this has been the biggest challenge of all. Wait for a couple of months to see how we paint the city with the colours and designs of the Commonwealth Games 2010.''

International Inputs

A huge area where Delhi is far behind most metros is in the way it behaves with its tourists. Despite being the capital, we still hear horror stories from foreigners about how the city's treated them-many don't even get to see the Dilliwala dil that the city boasts of. Within a few months, foreigners will swarm into the city.

The cultural mingling will go a long way to build relations and shed a few inhibitions about each other. And a few women from other countries have come quite early to be a part of the CGOC wherein they bring in their country's views and try and merge them with the local culture so that we all understand each other's language, customs, habits a little better. One of them is Lisa Lavigne, director para-sport, Commonwealth Games Committee.

Lavigne's job is to make sure that the buses to hotels, venues and various other places are accessible to disabled athletes before the 250 para-sport athletes arrive for the Games.

''It's only the third time in the history of an international event that we have a para-sport team that is completely integrated with the main team.'' That essentially implies that unlike the Olympic Games or even the Winter Olympics that has the para-athletes competing after 15 days of the main event, these athletes will be integrated with the main team, and their medals will also be counted with the tally of the able-bodied athletes from their country.

While it's great encouragement for these athletes once the Game's underway, what often poses a problem is preparing the groundwork in different countries-many of them have a culture quite like ours, in the sense that they aren't used to the idea of dealing with people with disabilities. Lavigne, an Australian with a background in the hospitality industry, had been involved with The Manchester Games 2010, held in February, and the Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006.

She brings in her experiences to improve facilities and change mindsets in this city so that the para-sport athletes are integrated as much with the city as all the others. There's also Zhang Xiuzhi from China-she is the associate director of the archery and shooting events. A major contributor to the Beijing Games, she brings in her set of experience to the Commonwealth Games.

''Archery isn't a discipline everyone is aware of or knows about a lot. My endeavour has been to understand how it's viewed in India and to work on areas that need improvement-besides knowledge of the game, that includes the training facilities in the stadium and Games village.'' Xiuzhi says she has learnt a lot from sports other than archery as well.

''There are various things one can learn from each other's culture. People in this country are friendly. Initially there was a bit of a language barrier, but now it's ok.'' Meanwhile, Lavigne has arranged for special buses that can carry wheelchairs, rooms with facilities for the paraplegic at the Games Village, not to mention space for wheel-chair bound spectators watching the Games.''We've already built 12 accessible rooms at the Games' flagship Ashok Hotel.''

How to sensitise Delhi

Lavigne recalls that when she came to Delhi there weren't any hotels which could facilitiate wheel-chair use. Even the one that had such facilities, Le Meridien, had its own set of problems largely owing to people not being exposed to dealing with disabled people. ''Once one of my teammembers, a paraplegic, was going for a buffet held at a hall, and the wheelchair could only be accessed from a backdoor, which was blocked.

So an executive of the hotel offered to get him whatever he wanted from the buffet. He immediately objected. He said he couldn't make up his mind since he didn't know what was there in the buffet-he needed to see the buffet before he decided what to eat'' It's dealing with problems and sensitive issues such as these on a daily basis that's keeping women in the CGOC on their toes.

The problems may be at times easy to solve, at others times insurmountable even for the best in the business, but these women aren't shying away from taking on any challenges head-on.

The Organising Committee of the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi comprises 40% women. Indian legislators, still arguing over 30% reservation for women in Parliament, should take a cue.

FIFA launches World Cup supermarket tickets sale

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 03:09 PM

South African fans will be able to snap up half a million unsold World Cup tickets in cash after FIFA agreed on Wednesday to drop a ruling that they could only be bought online or through a ballot procedure.

The final phase of sales for the month-long tournament beginning in June will see ticket selling points in shopping malls in the nine host cities plus a network of popular supermarkets.

Tickets are still available for all 64 matches except the final at Soccer City in Johannesburg on July 11.

It will be the first time fans can buy 2010 finals tickets over the counter in cash -- the preferred method of purchasing for South African football fans, many of whom are on low incomes.

FIFA had previously insisted on selling tickets through its website on the Internet or in a complicated ballot procedure at a local bank branch.

Many South Africans complained the process excluded people without web access, credit cards or the disposable income to pay for their tickets months in advance.

"For this last phase, we have made a big effort to assist football fans by introducing various additional means to purchase a ticket," said Jerome Valcke, FIFA general secretary said.

"We are committed to facilitating the process for all fans and giving them this last chance to attend the matches and experience the excitement of this first World Cup in Africa."

Danny Jordaan, who heads the South African organising committee, was delighted with the change of heart.

"We are excited about these new initiatives, which make the process much easier for everyone," he said.

"We have always said that it is important that we make this World Cup more accessible to the people and with the over-the-counter sales, we believe this measure is consistent with the needs of the fans."

ABOVE NORMAL

Ticket prices are also well above normal for top-level football in South Africa.

A special category of tickets for residents of South Africa sells at $20 but costs escalate drastically in higher categories for better seats and after the first-round group phase. Tickets for premier seats at the final costs $900.

Demand in South Africa had initially been sluggish but the most recent phase saw locals snap up 85 percent of the 240,000 tickets sold between February and the beginning of this month.

FIFA said last week 2.2 million tickets have been sold for the tournament, which kicks off on June 11.

PM says action on Tharoor only on basis of evidence

Published Wed, Apr 14 10 02:39 PM

Ajay Kaul and Lalit K Jha Washington, Apr 14 (PTI) As a fresh controversy exploded over Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today promised to act on the issue, if necessary, on the basis of evidence. "I have heard about these things (allegations against Tharoor). I do not have all the facts before me. When I go back (on Saturday), I will get all the facts, and in the light of those, if any action is necessary, I think that would be the proper way to proceed," Singh said here when asked about BJP''s demand for the minister''s removal in the wake of the controversy around Kochi IPL team. "I cannot go by hearsay or what is appearing in the various columns of the newspapers," he told a press conference. Tharoor is battling allegations that a beautician romantically linked to him had received Rs 70-crore free equity in Kochi IPL team, which he helped set up. BJP had yesterday demanded that the Prime Minister sack Tharoor and order a CBI inquiry into the minister''s alleged "misuse" of authority for "securing" the investment of his friend Sunanda Pushkar in the team. It had also said that Tharoor''s action was a copy book case of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act as the minister is a public servant.

Walcott says not impossible to win Premier League

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 02:29 PM

London, Apr 14 (ANI): Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has said it will take something special for his club to capture the Premier League title.

Walcott believes his team needs to win all five of their remaining Premier League games to claim the top spot.

Admitting that it will be a difficult task, the 21-year-old England winger said it is not mission impossible for Arsenal's young squad.

Walcott said: "I believe we will stay together. We have been through some experiences and now we need to start winning trophies. You never know in football but, fingers crossed, people will stay."

"We are all really close. We all do well in training and work hard for each other. We play fantastic football at times but we need to kill teams off and grind out a result. We have done that recently in our matches at Hull and Stoke," The Sun quoted him, as saying.

"The match at Spurs could also be one of those type of matches. I will be happy if we win 1-0 but play rubbish. It is all about results. No one remembers the dirty games if you win the league. It's finishing top that matters.

"We need to win every game but it is possible. It would be so great to have a Premier League winner's medal at home on my mantelpiece," Walcott said.

"I saw the Manchester United game at Blackburn on Sunday and I could see the disappointment on Alex Ferguson's face. It shows it's a very tough league, particularly when you go away from home. The support of the fans is like an extra man.

"That is why going to Spurs will be difficult. They can have a big influence on this league. They are chasing fourth with Manchester City and also have to play United and Chelsea," he added. (ANI)

Rooney back for clash against Manchester City

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 02:25 PM

London, Apr 14 (ANI): Ace striker Wayne Rooney, who was forced to sit out Manchester United's last two league matches due to an ankle injury, has informed boss Sir Alex Ferguson that he will be back for the big Manchester derby on Saturday.

Rooney was a surprise starter for the Champions League quarter-final, second leg with Bayern Munich last Wednesday and lasted only 55 minutes before hobbling out of the tie.

But he has told friends that his ankle is now fine and he should be ready to line up at Eastlands.

That will be a huge boost to boss Ferguson as his team has managed only one point in two matches without their 34-goal leading scorer, The Sun reports.

United lost 2-1 to title rivals Chelsea and drew 0-0 at Blackburn.

Ferguson said on Friday that he hoped to have Rooney back for the derby, but he would need time and treatment on the injury.

Fergie said last week: "It's not serious and I think he will be ready for the City game."

The United squad was given Monday off but Rooney went in to do some light training and receive more work on his right ankle. (ANI)

Pakistan's hockey legends want PHF secretary sacked

Published>Wed, Apr 14 10 02:19 PM

Karachi, April 14 (IANS) Pakistan's hockey crisis that was triggered by the national team's disastrous last-place finish in the World Cup in New Delhi continues unabated with former greats renewing their demand for the sacking of top Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) officials.

Pakistan's Sports Minister Aijaz Jakhrani, who met the former national players in Islamabad Wednesday, has said that he needs a week to take a call on the issue. He told The News Wednesday that there wasn't really any outcome from a meeting with PHF president Qasim Zia and three former stalwarts - Islahuddin Siddiqui, Shahnaz Sheikh and Shahbaz Ahmed.

'We had a meeting with the stakeholders today and it went fine,' said Jakhrani, who has been asked by Prime Minister Yosuf Raza Gilani to resolve the crisis as soon as possible.

Little was achieved by the minister through the meeting in which the Olympians refused to budge on their demand for the sacking of PHF secretary Asif Bajwa, who they have singled out as the main culprit behind Pakistan's humiliating last-place finish in the World Cup in New Delhi in March.

Zia, too, was unwilling to change his stance on the issue and once again made it clear that he will not take the 'unconstitutional' decision of dismissing Bajwa as PHF secretary.

Jakhrani sounded a bit displeased on the rigidity shown by both the parties and said that he has asked Secretary Sports and his staff to carry out a thorough research on whether an elected secretary of a national sports federation can be sacked by the sports minister.

'I've asked the secretary (sports), to check the constitution and the notifications issued by the sports ministry to dismiss elected officials of sports federations in the past,' said Jakhrani.

'I've given them a week to conduct all research and hope to make a call on the issue once I've gone through all relevant details,' he added.

'I won't say that I would sack the PHF secretary or not because I don't have anything concrete so far,' he stressed.

Olympians, however, are convinced that Jakhrani has the authority to sack 'incompetent' officials with Islah stressing that as sports minister it is his duty to set things right in Pakistan hockey.

'We have given the minister enough proof that he is authorized to take any kind of action against incompetent officials,' Islah said. 'In fact we have told him that he can sack both the PHF president and secretary. The secretary should be dismissed because he is responsible for the World Cup humiliation and the president because he is shielding Bajwa for some unknown reason,' added Islah, a former Pakistan captain.

Islah said that the meeting with Jakhrani was 'inconclusive' and once again renewed his call for Gilani's intervention to save Pakistan hockey. 'We appeal to him (Gilani) not as the prime minister but as chief patron of PHF to save our hockey,' he said.

Qasim Zia, also a former Olympian, took a swipe at the former greats, saying that he doesn't consider them as 'stakeholders' of Pakistan hockey.

'They don't want to do anything positive for hockey,' he said. They are not even among the stake-holders because they have never taken part in the elections. They are just standing outside and trying to get changes in the PHF which is unacceptable,' he said.
