Hauritz says he is a better bowler than Doherty

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 01:22 PM

Melbourne, Nov 16 (ANI): Spinner Nathan Hauritz, whose place in the Australian Test team is in doubt, has said that he is a better bowler than Tasmanian Xavier Doherty who has also been included in an expanded 17-man Ashes squad.

Hauritz said that he will improve his performance and will be out to do exactly that at the SCG from Wednesday.

"I think I am (a better bowler) definitely, but my opinion doesn't really matter unfortunately when it comes to picking the side," Hauritz said.

""It's just important I bowl well this week. If I bowl well and not get picked so be it, but if I bowl well and get picked I look forward to the Ashes," Fox Sports quoted him,a s saying.

The spotlight is intense on all Australia players in the lead-up to the first Test against England at the Gabba starting on November 25, but none are facing it more than Hauritz.

"It can be tough (dealing with pressure) but I guess that's why you want to play cricket for Australia.

It's not meant to be easy, the pressure's always going to be on," Hauritz said.

"I guess with an Ashes series everything's heightened just that little bit more, and it probably brings the best out of you, being put under pressure so much. But it's definitely something that sometimes you wish it wasn't there," he added. (ANI)

McCullum, Williamson take New Zealand towards safety

Tue, Nov 16 10 01:18 PM

A resolute fifth-wicket stand between centurion Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson dashed India's hopes of forcing a victory against New Zealand on the final day of the second test match on Tuesday.

Resuming the day on 237 for four, McCullum (171) and Williamson (66) added 118 runs for the unbroken partnership to take the visitors to 339-4 at lunch, with an overall lead of 217. Right-hander McCullum, unbeaten on 124 overnight, continued to frustrate the Indian spinners with his quick footwork and deft reverse sweeps.

Williamson, playing only his second test match, was also impressive against the spinners, who failed to extract any considerable bite off the fifth day pitch at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Paceman Zaheer Khan, suffering an abdominal strain, could bowl only three overs in the morning before walking off the field, severely denting the Indian attack with the new ball.

India's only chance in the fruitless session came when substitute Cheteshwar Pujara dropped McCullum on 148 at short leg off Harbhajan Singh's bowling.

The three-match series is tied at 0-0 after the opening test at Ahmedabad was drawn. The third and final test will be played in Nagpur from Nov. 20-24.

CBI nabs Kalmadi aides Darbari & Mohindroo

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 03:38 AM

The CBI today arrested T S Darbari and Sanjay Mohindroo, former officials of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee and close aides of chairman Suresh Kalmadi, on charges of forgery and cheating relating to the Queen's Baton Relay (QBR) in London last year.

The agency registered two cases involving UK-based AM Films and AM Cars and Van Hire and Ashish Patel, owner of these two companies.

Charges relating to forgery, cheating, criminal conspiracy under IPC sections and Prevention of Corruption Act have been listed in the two FIRs against them. It is alleged that Darbari and Mohindroo forged emails of the Indian High Commission and prepared fake quotations to benefit Patel's companies.

In February this year, The Indian Express first reported that Darbari, Joint Director General of the OC, had come under the scanner for his alleged involvement in evading customs duty after a courier was arrested from Kochi airport with a diamond ring worth Rs 28 lakh meant for him.

OC Director Raj Singh has also been booked in the AM Cars case. Sources said the CBI is likely to send a Letter Rogatory to London soon, seeking help in investigating Patel and his companies in the case.

Earlier in the day, the CBI searched four places, including the residences of Darbari and Mohindroo and the OC office and seized several documents.

A CBI official claimed the OC suffered a loss of approximately Rs 3.5 crore in awarding contract to AM Films and AM Cars for the QBR because these officials allegedly inflated prices.

Mohindroo left even before allegations of corruption surfaced and Darbari was removed later. They will both be produced in the Patiala House courts on Tuesday.

Battered Margarito to have surgery on right eye socket

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 02:38 AM

Antonio Margarito is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday to repair a fractured right eye socket after taking a severe pounding during his lop-sided defeat by Manny Pacquiao in Dallas at the weekend.

Mexican Margarito, who lost the WBC super welterweight title fight to Filipino Pacquiao by an unanimous points decision, will have the procedure at Dallas Methodist Hospital, organisers said.

"Margarito has a fractured right orbital bone," Lee Samuels, spokesman for fight promoter Bob Arum, told Reuters on Monday. "He was banged up pretty bad.

"After the fight was over, he had some stitchwork done in the locker room. They put six stitches in his right cheek and three through his right eyebrow."

Despite holding a significant weight, height and reach advantage, Margarito was outclassed by a much faster Pacquiao over 12 rounds at Cowboys Stadium on Saturday.

The Filipino was a staggering 17 pounds lighter when he stepped into the ring but he pummelled the Mexican's head virtually at will, leaving his opponent with a puffed left eye and a cut under a badly swollen right eye.

Pacquiao's experienced trainer Freddie Roach was stunned Margarito did not quit before the end of the 12-round bout.

NO QUITTING

"He has a lot of balls and he didn't (quit)," Roach told reporters after Pacquiao had claimed an eighth world title in an unprecedented eighth weight class.

"I truly, truly think the job of the trainer is to protect your fighter and Margarito's corner should have saved him. He may never fight again.

"He took too much unnecessary punishment to me. I would have stopped that fight. After eight rounds, it was over and it was just a matter of time."

Roach added that he had never seen such a severe beating handed out by Pacquiao, who improved his career record to 52-3-2 with 38 knockouts.

Pacquiao, who opened the cut under Margarito's right eye during the fourth round, took pity on the bruised and battered Mexican in the 11th.

"I feel for my opponent, his eyes and his bloody face," said the Filipino, who looked across at referee Laurence Cole during the 11th round and asked him to stop the fight.

"I wanted the ref to look at that. In the 12th round I wasn't looking for a knockout."

Toyota severs links with HRT F1 team

Tue, Nov 16 10 02:18 AM

Toyota have ended a cooperation agreement with the struggling HRT Formula One team but are still seeking payment, the Japanese company said on Monday.

"TMG (Toyota Motorsport) regrets that HRT has not met its contractual payment obligations and will pursue all available options to reach a satisfactory conclusion to this matter," Toyota said in a statement.

Cologne-based Toyota pulled out of Formula One at the end of the 2009 season but had already designed a car for 2010 that could provide a basis for next year.

Spanish-owned HRT, or Hispania, have severed their ties with chassis builder Dallara and had been exploring a technical partnership.

They have since announced a deal with Williams to use their gearboxes.

A day after the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Toyota said that "all cooperation with Hispania Racing F1 Team has been terminated and will not resume.

"TMG retains all intellectual property rights to its current F1 car and is completely free to pursue other projects and support new customers for its high-performance engineering services."

The friendly is being held as part of the effort to promote the joint bid by the two countries to host the 2018 World Cup, with FIFA's decision due on Dec. 2.

The match in Lisbon is also an opportunity for Portugal to avenge their World Cup last-16 defeat to the Spanish.

Spurs' Huddlestone out for three months with ankle injury

Tue, Nov 16 10 01:38 AM

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tom Huddlestone is poised to undergo surgery on an ankle injury and will be ruled out for three months, the Premier League club said on Monday.

The injury is a blow to manager Harry Redknapp who will be without the powerful midfielder for the club's remaining Champions League group games.

Gebrselassie rescinds decision to retire

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 12:58 AM

Marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie has reversed his decision to retire and will continue to run competitively.

The Ethiopian great dropped out of his first New York City Marathon on Nov. 7 because of a knee injury and immediately announced he was quitting athletics.

"On Saturday he travelled to Wollega (in Ethiopia), where there was a race being held, and he said that as long as he is healthy he will continue to run," his coach Woldemeskel Kostre told Reuters by telephone.

"Local reporters asked him and he told them he will continue running."

Gebrselassie, 37, regarded as the best male distance runner of all time after setting 27 world records, was in Wollega as a celebrity starter for Sunday's Great Nekemte 10-km run.

"As long as he has the desire and the willingness he can keep running until he's 45," said Kostre. "People here have been urging him to continue running."

Ethiopian television reported that Gebrselassie said he would continue to prepare for the 2012 London Olympics.

The veteran also performed a retirement U-turn after calling time on his track career following the 2004 Athens Olympics when he finished out of the medals in the 10,000 metres.

Dubbed 'The Emperor' in Addis Ababa where he is revered, Gebrselassie won 10,000 gold at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics and claimed four consecutive world titles at the distance.

He has been equally impressive on the roads and set the world marathon record in Berlin in 2008.

In a statement on Monday, Gebrselassie's manager Jos Hermens said he had had a chance to think things over since his sudden decision to quit.

"Many people, also close to Haile, asked him to come back on his decision. When he made his emotional decision, he did not foresee the impact that it would have for his people and the youth in Ethiopia," Hermens said.

"Haile agreed it was not the time and not the way to stop."

Haye not off the hook yet over betting claim

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 11:58 PM

David Haye could still face disciplinary action from British boxing authorities despite denying he had gambled on himself to beat Audley Harrison in the third round of Saturday's WBA heavyweight title contest.

Immediately after Saturday's one-sided fight was stopped in the third Haye claimed at ringside that he and his family had bet on his prediction -- a boast he retracted when talking to BBC Radio Five on Monday.

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC), which also confirmed on Monday that they were considering withholding part of Harrison's estimated one million pounds ($1.61 million) purse, said they would meet to discuss Haye's comments.

"He has come out and denied what he said and I accept he said that but we will have a board meeting and discuss what we are going to do but we will take our time," BBBC general secretary Robert Smith told Reuters.

"We have a strict regulation that doesn't allow betting. He said something on Saturday and has thought better of it and we are making enquiries with regard to things we are doing with the gambling commission but nothing untoward has been reported to anybody at the moment.

"We are fairly happy that he didn't do anything but we will discuss it in two weeks' time."

While stopping well short of accusing Harrison of not trying, Smith said the former Olympic champion's performance in which he threw just one punch had been "a sickener".

More than 20,000 fans crammed into Manchester's MEN Arena for the much-hyped fight between the two British heavyweights while millions more watched it on pay-per-view.

After being booed out of the ring, the 39-year-old Harrison now faces an anxious few weeks before learning whether he will receive his full pay packet for his feeble showing.

"We have the power to do (withhold his purse)," Smith said. "I've had a discussion with the chairman (Charles Giles) and ultimately we can in certain circumstances retain a percentage of a boxer's purse.

"We will not rush into it though. We will let the dust settle first and discuss the way forward at our meeting in December.

"Ultimately you have to say that Audley just froze. It was a tremendous disappointment and a huge let down. Let's get real, it was a sickener.

"It was clear that he was hurt and I suppose the only thing you can say is that he got up after the initial punches landed by Haye because if he had not got up I would have been very annoyed. He did try, but he just froze."

Asked if it had portrayed British boxing in a poor light, Smith said he had no regrets at sanctioning the fight.

"It was a sporting contest and even FA Cup finals where you have the two best teams in the land can be drab affairs," he said. "I'm not saying Audley is the best heavyweight around but he was an Olympic champion. He just froze, and that's sport."

Sweden to rest Ibrahimovic for Germany friendly

Mon, Nov 15 10 11:18 PM

Sweden forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be rested and will sit out the international friendly at home to Germany on Wednesday, coach Erik Hamren said on Monday.

"On the whole, he'll be better off resting," said Hamren, who was speaking to reporters in Malmo as the great and the good of Swedish football gathered for the annual Fotbollsgalan awards ceremony.

AC Milan forward Ibrahimovic is expected to be awarded the Golden Ball for Sweden's best male player for the fifth time at a ceremony later on Monday.

Ibrahimovic scored the winner in the derby against Inter in Serie A on Sunday. Hamren said that his club had not requested that he rest the striker against Germany.

"This is my decision. If it had been a competitive game on Wednesday he would have played."

Elfsborg forward Denny Avdic has been called up as a replacement, according to the website of Swedish TV station SVT (svt.se).

Passport Office calls Modi''s lawyers for hearing tomorrow

Mon, Nov 15 10 10:52 PM

Mumbai, Nov 15 (PTI) The Regional Passport Office (RPO) here has summoned lawyers of Lalit Modi for a hearing tomorrow on their plea to inspect documents, on the basis of which the RPO had sought to revoke former IPL Chairman''s passport. Modi, who is currently in Europe, is facing a probe by multiple government agencies for alleged financial irregularities in the IPL. Confirming the receipt of notice from RPO, Modi''s lawyer Mehmood Abdi told PTI, "We have requested to defer the hearing to November 18 and are waiting for response from the authorities." In response to RPO''s notice to cancel Modi''s passport, his lawyers had requested the passport authorities to allow inspection of documents based on which they had sent a notice to Modi as to why his passport should not be cancelled. To decide this plea, RPO has summoned Modi''s lawyers for a hearing tomorrow at 4 pm. Abdi confirmed that at around 2.30 pm today they got a notice from the Regional Passport Officer, Mumbai, asking them to appear for personal hearing tomorrow at 4 pm. However, Abdi said it is difficult to attend at a short notice as the attending counsel are pre-occupied with prior court commitments tomorrow. He further sought disclosure of all the correspondence and documents relied by the passport authorities for the proposed initiation of action for revocation of Modi''s passport. They are essentially required in the interest of justice and fairplay as revocation of passport is a very serious action which puts personal freedom of a person at risk and restraint which tantamounts to curtailment of fundamental rights of a citizen, he said.

China organisers rapped over 'sold-out' stadiums

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 10:38 PM

Despite a rampant home team and a legion of passionate fans, organisers of the Guangzhou Asian Games were embarrassed into issuing more tickets on Monday to bolster disappointing crowds.

Promises of warm crowd support and boasts of sold-out competitions have trickled off the lips off Chinese officials, who had hitherto enjoyed comparisons to last month's Delhi Commonwealth Games.

But Delhi's problems filling stadiums appear to have also plagued Guangzhou, where attendances have fallen flat even as the Chinese continued their relentless bullying of opponents from Tokyo to Tehran on day three of competition.

The hosts hauled in another 17 gold medals to bring their tally to 54, as rows of deserted seats mocked the marquee table tennis semi-final in the evening session between the home side and North Korea, a tense and engaging contest that deserved a bigger audience.

While top-class competition between the East Asian powers has seen the judo and swimming venues tip over the half-full mark, and China's triumph in the men and women's team badminton drew a near-packed house, other tournaments have struggled.

"Even that (all tickets were sold) we found some space in the venues for the spectators and we were wondering why people who received these tickets weren't coming," Olympic Council of Asia president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah told Reuters.

"It is because of security or losing interest or they don't like this kind of sport?"

As in Delhi, the blame was pinned on corporate ticket-holders who had failed to take their seats for the event as the OCA president announced another 400,000 tickets would be sold to the public after would be-spectators were turned away from half-full venues.

"We're going to release the details to make sure that those 400,000 will not create another problem but to solve the spectators (problem) of entering the events," Sheikh Ahmad said.

While missing fans may have largely put paid to fears of poor crowd behaviour at the Games, the crowds that have assembled in respectable numbers have enjoyed some top-quality sport and largely in harmony for a region riven with political and diplomatic disputes.

The venue for China's last 16 knockout tie against South Korea was one notable exception on Monday, as both the Under-23 team and sections of the Chinese crowd did themselves few favours.

While China fete their sporting heroes like few other countries, handing them honorary Communist Party posts along with multi-million dollar endorsement deals, the country's national soccer teams enjoy precious little love.

A crushing 3-0 defeat by the Koreans prompted Chinese fans to yell "Sack the coach! Sack the team!" as players trudged off at the Tianhe stadium.

One of the Asian Games' biggest drawcards, Japan's golden boy swimmer Kosuke Kitajima, may sympathise with the Chinese soccer team's sinking feeling after he was thrashed in the 100 metres breaststroke, ending his eight-year grip on the title.

Clearly out of sorts after a hiatus from competition last year, the Olympic 100 and 200 metres breaststroke champion finished fourth, trailing winning compatriot Ryo Tateishi.

"I knew after my turn I wouldn't win the race. Although I swam faster in the morning, I didn't swim fast enough," said the 28-year-old, who also disappointed with a fourth in the 50 metres on Sunday.

POOL DOMINATION

With their talisman thumped, Japan were again engulfed by the Chinese tidal wave in the pool. The hosts racked up another five golds to leave the much-hyped battle for supremacy between the bitter rivals all but dead in the water.

China now has 14 golds in the pool to Japan's four at the halfway mark of the competition. The teams notched 16 golds apiece at the 2006 Games in Doha.

Japan, with 13 golds, also appear in danger of losing their battle for runner-up honours, with the South Korean shooters propelling their delegation's total to 18 titles after another fierce gunfight with the hosts at the Aoti Shooting Venue.

China narrowly took the points with five of the eight titles on offer in the rifle prone, rapid fire and running target disciplines, with South Korea taking the rest.

South Korea's Kim Hak-man displayed cool resolve in clinching the men's 50m rifle prone title but then put the intense regional rivalry in perspective when asked what the win meant to him.

"Today is my son's birthday. The gold medal is the best gift for my son," said Kim.

Indian women''s waterpolo team thrashed by Kazakhstan

Mon, Nov 15 10 09:52 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 15 (PTI) India made a disastrous international debut in the Asian Games women''s water polo competition when they were humbled 38-2 by Kazakhstan today. A first minute goal by Anna Zhubkova started the goalrush for the former Soviet bloc region as they led 27-1 at the halfway stage of the match following an initial surge that put the Kazakhs, who have played at the Olympic Games, 13-1 ahead after the first quarter. Superior anticipation and speed in the water helped the winners score goals at will and complete a humiliating victory over an Indian team that was playing its first international match. The Indian defence was torn apart by their rivals before the Kazaks slowed down to use their bench strength to the fullest in the second half. The score increased to 35-1 after the third quarter before Indian captain Biji Varghese converted a penalty goal early in the last period of play. But gaining in experience, the Indian defence improved and kept the Kazakhs scoring down to only three towards the end. For the winners, Zamira Myrzabekova led the scorers'' list with five goals.

Khade narrowly misses India''s first medal in pool in 24 years

Mon, Nov 15 10 09:38 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 15 (PTI) Virdhawal Khade agonisingly lost the chance to become India''s first medalist in Asian Games swimming in nearly a quarter of a century when he missed the bronze medal narrowly in the men''s 50m freestyle event. The 19-year-old Khade finished just 0.03 seconds behind bronze winner Kishida Harada Rammaru of Japan after a superb effort that saw him clock 22.87 secs in the final, in which the gold medal winner Lu Zhi Wu came home in 22.37. The silver medal was won by Kishida Masayuki of Japan in 22.45 while Rammaru clocked 22.84. Khade, who is based in Bangalore and training there, had clocked a better time of 22.58 in the Asian age group championship in Japan last year. Had Khade, a national champion in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 400m freestyle events, managed to be inside top-three, he would have become India''s first swimming medallist in the Asian Games since Khazan Singh''s 200m butterfly silver in the 1986 Seoul Asiad. National coach Pradeep Kumar described the bronze loss as "heartbreaking". "It was heartbreaking, what else can I say? We were hoping he would be able to win a medal after several years. Any medal would have done, but then it was not to be," he said. Khade clocked 22.98 while coming in third in the sixth heat behind Kishida (22.86) and Park Mingkyu (Korea, 22.90) to qualify for the medal race. Khade''s performance was still a lot better than his other compatriots who cut a sorry figure in the pool failing to make any of the finals held today. Arjun Jayaprakash, who was also competing in the 50m freestyle event, clocked 24.34sec to finish third in his heat but way below the eventual qualifying time. In 100m breaststroke, Sandeep Sejwal was the only Indian in contention and he managed a timing of 1:03.67sec to finish third in his heat which was not good enough for the finals. Similar was the story of Havaldar Rohit Rajendra and Rehan Poncha in the 200m backstroke. Rohit managed to complete his heat in 2:12.79sec to be sixth in the standings and a good 10.25secs behind the eventual winner of his qualifying group. Rehan finished seventh in his heat with a timing of 2:18.56sec. In the men''s 4x200m freestyle relay, the Indian team of Aaron Agnel D''souza, Anandrao Mandar Divase, Rohit and Rehan clocked 7:40.03 to finish fifth in the heats. The timing could only fetch them a place in the back-up list for the finals.

India suffer 0-3 loss against South Korea

Mon, Nov 15 10 09:22 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 15 (PTI) India suffered a 0-3 thrashing at the hands of formidable South Korea in their second preliminary round match of the men''s volleyball Group B league competition in the Asian Games here today. India, who began their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Kazakhstan, lost 19-25, 20-25, 19-25 today in a contest that lasted more than an hour. India had beaten the same opponents 3-2 during this year''s continental championship in Iran, but they could not repeat the show as Korean spikers Park Chul Woo and Moon Sung Min crashed through their net blocks from all angles to help their team avenge their defeat at the Asian championships. India now need to defeat Vietnam tomorrow to progress in the tournament. The Indian players did level to stay with their rivals till 12-all in the opening set after Sanjay Banwari hit a winning spike while Sube Singh blocked well to tie the scores. But Korea, with Park in his elements, eventually regained the momentum and won it in 22 minutes. Mohan Ukkarapandian''s two service aces helped India recover in the initial stages of the second set at 8-all but Park''s razor-sharp spikes from the side of the court proved too hot to handle and the Koreans steadily built up the points and won the set in 24 minutes. The last set saw Indian attacker G Pradeep''s shots being blocked out by the Korean trio of Moon, Park and Shin Yung Suk to help the latter to take a handy six point lead. Banwari and Naveen Manidurai led the Indian fight-back with powerful spikes in the front after the team made a series of mistakes in receiving the ball but the Koreans were not to be stopped with Shin excelling from the middle with his fast attacks. The third set lasted 23 minutes. India''s last preliminary match against North Korea is on November 18.

Sasikiran carries Indian medal hopes

Mon, Nov 15 10 08:52 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 15 (PTI) Krishnan Sasikiran kept the Indian hopes alive in the Asian Games chess tournament, while Suryasekar Ganguly, Dronavalli Harika and Tania Sachdev receded a bit on the penultimate day of competition, here today. Indian Grandmaster Sasikiran remained the lone unbeaten participant from the country as he continued his good show with two wins and a draw today, to sit at joint second on 5.5 points along with top seed Le Quang Liem of Vietnam. Sasikiran ended the day half a point behind sole leader Rustom Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan with whom he drew his fifth round clash. The two are quite close in ELO ratings, with just three points separating them. In the other two matches of the day, Sasikiran defeated lesser ranked rivals Nguyen Ngoc Truong of Vietnam and So Wesley of Philippines to keep himself firmly entrenched in the hunt for a medal. He has won four matches and drawn three so far. Meanwhile, Ganguly finished the day at joint fifth with 5 points, having registered five wins and two losses. Among women, Harika and Tania are at joint fourth on five points each after the seventh round. Harika could have done more consistently. She raised hopes after holding Grandmaster and top seed Hou Yifan, with 160 ELO points better than her, to a draw in the sixth round. But then she herself was held to a draw by her lower ranked opponent Pham Le Thao Nguyen of Vietnam. She stared the day by outclassing Atous Pourkashiyan in round five. Tanya began the day with a loss against Grandmaster Pham Le Thou Nguyen but then stayed in the hunt with successive wins over Mongolia''s Tuvshintugs Batchi and Irene Sukandar Khan of Indonesia. The women''s bunch was led by Hou Yifan with six wins and the surprise draw against Harika. She was a full point clear of Pham Le Thao Nguyen, who was in second spot.

India settle for team silver after losing to favourites China

Mon, Nov 15 10 07:48 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 15 (PTI) Aditya Mehta shocked world professional circuit top 20 player Liang Wianbo but India went down fighting 1-3 to title-favourites China in the snooker team championship final to settled for the silver medal at the Asian Games Town Gymnasium, here today. Cue sports has so far fetched three medals for India in the ongoing quadrennial mega-event with star cueist Pankaj Advani successfully defending his title in the English Billiards singles category while Alok Kumar securing a bronze in the men''s 8-ball pool singles yesterday. Today, each match in the snooker team final was a single frame affair in which world pro no 5 Ding Junhui outclassed former Asian champion Yasin Merchant 70-16 with a best break of 44 as compared to the Indian veteran''s 8 to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Aditya Mehta, also from Mumbai like Yasin, produced the lone silver lining when he shut out Liang Wenbo - ranked 20th on the tough pro circuit 51-46 with a best run of 26 to bring his team on level terms in the clash for the coveted gold medal. But Deng Junhui and Tian Pengfei combined forces in the doubles against the two Indian exponents and score a 68-27 victory to help China forge ahead 2-1. A break of 49 did the trick for the Chinese pair while the Indians'' best effort was 23. Merchant, then, was thrashed 96-0 by Wenbo who came up with the near-century break and buried the Indian hopes. Indian coach Manoj Kothari later said the Chinese, fielding two top professional players and a top national player in Pengfei in the doubles were too hot for his team members. .

The wicket isn''t doing enough for bowlers: Laxman

Mon, Nov 15 10 07:22 PM

Hyderabad, Nov 15 (PTI) VVS Laxman feels the presence of a famed batting line-up and the pitch at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium should work to India''s advantage even if New Zealand manage to set the hosts a competitive fourth-innings target on the fifth and final day of the second Test here. "The target is to keep the lead under 225. Even if the required rate is five, there should not be a problem as we have got a very strong batting line-up and the nature of the wicket will help us," Laxman said after New Zealand finished the day at 237 for four to acquire a lead of 115 runs. Asked about the team''s plans for tomorrow, Laxman said, "We will look to get two early wickets and then get into the tail." On the nature of the wicket, he said, "The wicket is not doing enough for bowlers. There is bounce but no turn and that''s why I think our bowlers have done a very good job today." "Indian wickets normally take turn on the fourth and fifth day and that''s why I am a bit surprised. But it is better than Ahmedabad (where there was no bounce and turn)," he added. That India have the upper hand going into the final day is due to Harbhajan Singh''s exploits with bat in the hosts'' first innings and the stylish Hyderabadi knows it well too. "He was outstanding. He has worked very hard on his batting. He saved us in Ahmedabad and gave us the edge here," Laxman said. Dwelling on contributions from India''s lower-order batsmen in recent years, Laxman said that coach Gary Kirsten played a huge part towards that. "Our lower order takes great pride in batting well and Gary has instilled the importance of that in the team," he said. Reminded that Sachin Tendulkar today completed 21 years in international cricket Laxman said, "A star was born on this day. Sachin''s contribution is unbelievable and he is a very humble guy. He still practises like a kid, as if he is playing in his first Test." Coming into the series as rank outsiders after a 0-4 drubbing in an ODI series against Bangladesh, New Zealand have exceeded expectations with their spirited display here, but Laxman felt the Kiwis have always been a tough team to beat. "New Zealand have always been tough and there''s nothing new about that. In 2003 also, they fought very well. They are good players of spin bowling," Laxman said. Playing his first Test at his home ground, Laxman delighted the crowd here with his wristy strokes before getting out for 74, yesterday, but he seemed content. MORE PTI AH KHS

Gayle blows Sri Lanka away with double century

Mon, Nov 15 10 07:18 PM

Former captain Chris Gayle hit an explosive double century to propel West Indies to 362 for two on the opening day of the first test against Sri Lanka on Monday.

The tall left-hander smashed the ball all around the ground, batting throughout the day to finish unbeaten on 219 off 247 balls.

Gayle's chanceless effort comprised eight sixes and 26 fours on a placid pitch. Shivnarine Chanderpaul was also 20 not out when stumps were drawn.

The opener, who has a top test score of 317, reached his 13th century by hitting Ajantha Mendis for two consecutive sixes in an expensive over which cost the spinner 18 runs.

Gayle celebrated with arms raised, flashed a broad grin, took off his helmet and lay flat on the ground to milk the applause.

He was less exuberant upon reaching his double century with a single.

Gayle had a scare on 65 when Sri Lanka used the referral system for an lbw decision off Mendis and television replays showed he got an inside edge on to his pads.

The former skipper was particularly severe on Mendis and fellow spinner Suraj Randiv, who went for a combined total of 234 runs.

Gayle and Adrian Barath put on 110 for the first wicket after Darren Sammy won the toss on his debut as test captain.

Barath was dropped by Randiv on 35 after offering a head-high return catch but the spinner eventually got his man when he was caught at slip by Mahela Jayawardene on 50.

Darren Bravo then helped Gayle in a second-wicket partnership of 196, a record for any wicket between the two countries.

Bravo made his maiden test half-century and was then dropped at short leg by Tharanga Paranavitana on 50.

He finally fell eight runs later when he top-edged a pull off Mendis to square leg.

McCullum steadies Kiwis after Harbhajan century

Mon, Nov 15 10 06:58 PM

New Zealand's Brendon McCullum stood firm with his sixth test hundred on Monday to leave the second test against India evenly poised.

At the close on the penultimate day, New Zealand reached 237 for four wickets to take an overall lead of 115. McCullum (124) and Kane Williamson (12) were at the crease.

McCullum and his opening partner Tim McIntosh wiped off India's lead of 122 runs with their first century partnership of the series.

An attacking McCullum and a watchful McIntosh (49) added 125 runs for the first wicket before the latter got an inside edge off his pads to be caught at short leg off Pragyan Ojha.

Right-handed McCullum used his feet well against the Indian spinners and hit 11 boundaries and three sixes during his unbeaten knock. He toned down his approach as the ball got old and the hosts started making regular breakthroughs.

Ojha picked up his second wicket when Martin Guptill (18) got an edge to India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps.

Shanthakumaran Sreesanth reverse swung the ball to breach Ross Taylor's (7) defence while Jesse Ryder (20) edged part-time off-spinner Suresh Raina to Dhoni.

India's attack was handicapped by the absence of paceman Zaheer Khan, who could not bowl later in the day after a lengthy absence off the field. He left the ground midway through his fifth over, reportedly suffering an abdominal strain.

HARBHAJAN HEROICS

Earlier, spinner Harbhajan Singh shone with the bat once more as he hit his second consecutive hundred to extend India's first innings lead on the fourth morning at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

The Indian off-spinner continued tormenting the visitors with an unbeaten 111, following scores of 69 and 115 in the first test, and bludgeoned the New Zealand attack with seven fours and seven sixes to bring up his second test century.

Harbhajan added 105 runs for the final wicket with Sreesanth, who provided able support with 24 off 71 deliveries, before the hosts were dismissed for 472 in response to New Zealand's 350.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori (5-135) trapped Sreesanth leg before to complete his 19th five-wicket haul in tests.

The three-match series is tied at 0-0 after the opening test at Ahmedabad was drawn. The third and final test will be played in Nagpur from Nov. 20-24.

Ravi Kumar disappoints, fails to lift a medal

Mon, Nov 15 10 05:22 PM

Guangzhou, Nov 15 (PTI) India''s medal hope K Ravi Kumar failed to live up to expectations as he finished fifth with a below-par performance in the men''s 69kg weightlifting in the Asian Games here today. Ravi Kumar would have won a medal had he repeated his 321kg effort which fetched him a gold in the Commonwealth Games but he could only lift 311kg (141+170) to finish fifth. North Korea''s Sok Kim Kum (143+181) and Iran''s Rezaeian Morteza (147+177) were tied at 324kg but the former won the gold as he had a lesser body weight. The bronze went to Indonesia''s Triyatno with a total lift of 321kg (143+178). The men''s 69kg field was without China''s world champion and world record holder Hui Liao who lifted 358kg (160+198) in the World Championships in September. Hui pulled out just a few days before the Games due to a shoulder injury. Ravi Kumar started on a disappointing note, failing in his first two attempts to lift 140kg in snatch. However, he managed to clear 141kg in his third lift to stay in the hunt, by finishing on fifth at the end of the first category. In contrast, Rezaeian along with another fellow Iranian lifter Seyed Panzvan topped the snatch event with 147kg lift, followed by Sok Kim Kum and Triyatno with 143kg lift each. In clean and jerk, Ravi raised Indian hopes with a successful first attempt lift of 170kg but failed in his subsequent two attempts to lift 180kg. In his last clean and jerk attempt, he almost lifted 180kg but he could not hold on the weight for enough time to be counted as a good lift. "It was hard luck. Ravi had lifted 180kg in clean and jerk but could not hold onto it for enough time. It was just a matter of one second. We are disappointed," Indian Weightlifting Federation President Birendra Prasad Baishya, who was at at the Dongguan Gymnasium to watch the event, said. PTI CM PDS

Ashes: Tasmania's Doherty headed for spin duel with Hauritz

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 05:08 PM

Sydney, Nov. 15 (ANI): Tasmanian left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty faces a spin bowling shootout with New South Wales off-spinner Nathan Hauritz this week, but his state coach feels he could miss out on the Ashes opener in Brisbane.

The left-armed finger spinner was arguably the surprise pick in the initial 17-man squad for the first Test against England starting in Brisbane on Thursday week.

With skipper Ricky Ponting committing himself to playing a spinner, the performances of Doherty and Hauritz in the Sheffield Shield game commencing at the SCG on Wednesday could prove decisive.

Doherty said: "I guess it's probably come down to that given the fact that they (the national selectors) will cut it (the squad) back by the end of the week. They are obviously looking at something this week, I guess this week's performances probably won't hurt to much."

Doherty, who broke into the Australian one-day team earlier this season, has a modest career first-class average of 48.80.

He acknowledged his career had taken off in the last few months after at one stage finding himself left out of the Tasmanian team behind rival spinner Jason Krejza.

However Doherty, who turns 28 next Monday, believes he has become a better bowler since breaking back into the Tigers' four-day team toward the end of last season. (ANI)

Oz selectors have put middle order on notice, says ex-player Julian

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 05:02 PM

Melbourne, Nov. 15 (ANI): Former Australian fast bowler Brendon Julian is of the view that the team's middle order is currently under immense pressure to perform and deliver.

Now a Fox Sports cricket commentator, Julian conceded that the 17-man squad named by the Andrew Hilditch-led National Selection Panel wouldn't have too much bearing on the final XI to take the field in Brisbane.

He, however, did say that the selectors had indicated that Marcus North and Mike Hussey were still in a battle to maintain their place.

"Obviously there still a chance for everyone in that squad to be selected if they can put some form on the board," Julian told Fox Sports.

He added: "I think what (the squad) does show is that the pressure is on the middle order because they have picked (Usman) Khawaja and (Callum) Ferguson in there.

Fellow Fox Sports cricket commentator Mark Waugh said the NSP is keeping all of its options open.

"I think they are keeping their options open with the upcoming Australia A and Shield matches, so I think that is common sense," Waugh said.

"If Khawaja and Ferguson score runs, and Hussey and North fail, then it allows the selectors to have the option," he added.

Julian and Waugh both viewed Phil Hughes's surprise omission as a sign that the selectors felt secure with their top order, and that picking the 21-year-old was unnecessary. (ANI)

CBI registers first case in CWG scam

Mon, Nov 15 10 04:23 PM

New Delhi, Nov 15 (PTI) Registering its first case in alleged irregularities in Commonwealth Games, CBI today filed two separate cases involving UK-based A M Films and former officials of CWG Organising Committee on charges of forgery and cheating in organising Queen''s Baton Relay in London. Immediately after registering the cases, the CBI carried out searches at four places in the national capital region including office of CWG Organising Committee, agency officials said. The searches were conducted at the residence of sacked Joint Director General T S Darbari, deputy director-general Sanjay Mahendroo and Raj Singh, a Director level officer in the OC, the officials said. Darbari and Mahendroo were suspended initially after reports of scam started appearing in the media. Both the officials were sacked later. The first case names London-based A M Car/Van Services and its owner Ashish Patel besides Darbari, Mahendroo and Singh under sections 468 (forgery of court records and public documents), 471 (Using forged documents as genuine), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act. The second case involves London-based A M Films, Patel, Mahendroo, Darbari and others under sections 420 (cheating), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act. As searches were on, the sacked officials were being questioned by the CBI about the Queen Baton Relay for which a grand function was held in London. The CBI had started looking into complaints related to alleged irregularities in Queen''s Baton Relay (QBR) event and is examining documents pertaining to it, including those related to transfer of funds. The Enforcement Directorate had registered its first case under FEMA in CWG after British authorities referred to the Indian High Commission a matter regarding A M Films, a little-known London-based company, to which a huge sum of money was transferred through the Royal Bank of Scotland. Hilfenhaus says will target in form Strauss during Ashes series

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 04:17 PM

Hobart (Tasmania, Australia) Nov.15 (ANI): Ben Hilfenhaus is desperate to take the new ball in the first Test at the Gabba and says Australia will put a massive target on the head of England skipper Andrew Strauss.

The left-handed opener struggled during England's 2006-07 Ashes tour, averaging 24.70, but has hit the ground running this summer with centuries against Western Australia and South Australia.

"Definitely. I see myself as a new-ball bowler so I see that as part of my role," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Hilfenhaus, as saying in Hobart on Monday after being named in Australia's 17-man Ashes squad.

"I'm doing everything I can to make sure that I'm as best-prepared as I can be and give myself every chance to be a part of that first team."

The Tasmanian will be rested from this week's round of Shield matches and is already working on strategies to get through the defences of Strauss.

"I reckon Strauss in the top order (is the key)," Hilfenhaus said.

"If we get him cheaply and get under his nose, it's a good chance for us to get on top of them early.

"So I reckon that's fairly important for us, to target him," he said. (ANI)

Indian shooters flop in windy conditions at Asiad

Mon, Nov 15 10 03:53 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 15 (PTI) Indian shooters flopped on a windy day at the Aoti Shooting range with the country''s first woman world champion Tejaswini Sawant and Gagan Narang ending up way off target in their respective events at the Asian Games here today. After collecting three silver medals and a bronze on the first two days of competition, Indian shooters found it hard to adjust to the swirling wind conditions today. According to foreign coach Stanislav Lapidus, this upset the apple cart of both the men''s and women''s rifle wielders in the 50m prone events. Vijay Kumar, meanwile, could not sustain the form he showed yesterday in the men''s 25m rapid fire pistol which is his pet event. Narang, who secured two silver medals in the 10m air rifle event on the opening day including the team honours, was second-best among Indians by finishing a lowly 24th with 587 points in the prone event. Tejaswini too flunked badly as she shot 588 to end up 11th while teammates Meena (586) and Lajja Gauswami (585) finished 14th and 16th individually while the team ended up fifth with 1759. Kumar, who won a bronze in the 10m air pistol despite qualifying eighth yesterday, was clearly not at his best and finished a distant 17th, behind teammates Rahul, who was 10th with 572, and Harpreet Singh (571, 11th). Kumar''s final tally was 568. There was some consolation for Narang as today''s 50m rifle prone is not the 27-year-old Commonwealth Games hero''s main event at the distance and his remaining hopes of adding to his and India''s medal kitty lies in the 50m three position competition to be held on November 18. Hariom Singh, who has already secured an Olympic berth in the same event at the Munich World Championship in August, was 13th from 54 shooters in the qualification stage by shooting 590 marks but this was way behind the 598 he fired at Munich and well behind the 594-595 he has been doing in the practice rounds. Third Indian entrant Surinder Singh Rathod was 27th with a tally of 586 and the Indian squad finished fifth in the team event held concurrently with a total of 1763 points, 22 gold medal winners North Korea who created an Asian record of 1785, bettering the earlier one by three points. South Korea''s Kim Hakman won the individual gold with 698.3, while Yuriy Melsitov of Kazakhstan (697.9) and China''s Tian Hui (593) won the silver and bronze. Lapidus said while the performance was not up to the mark, the weather conditions too affected the Indians. MORE PTI SSR PM

Ashes: Challenged Johnson must try to retain Ponting's faith

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 03:37 PM

Melbourne, Nov.15 (ANI): As the Ashes loom next week, Australian left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Johnson faces a short-term challenge of retaining skipper Ricky Ponting's faith in his abilities to effectively get opposition batters out.

Johnson has been one of Ponting's great triumphs as a captain, but he must guard against becoming the type of bowler the skipper finds most difficult to handle, news.com.au reports.

Johnson and Ponting were partnered together on a boot camp in the Queensland hinterland four years ago and just clicked.

Ponting knew that Johnson, shy, unassuming and blessed with a likable nature that belied the testing journey on which life had taken him, came from a broken home and was green in cricket and in life.

Ponting became a mentor who not only provided sensible guidance but robust support in selection discussions and on the field, giving Johnson prime-time opportunities that prompted others to quietly suggest he was the teacher's pet.

However it proved to be a shrewd investment and Johnson swiftly became one of the world's best bowlers with Ponting's backing the wind beneath his wings.

Of late though, Johnson has experienced patchy form and the pressure is on him to deliver.

The gap between the best and worst of them is negligible.

Any bowler who has two bad Tests in a row, Johnson included, can expect to be dropped.

Johnson, though an outstanding performer, needs a huge amount of work to get in the groove and if his action is out by a millimetre or two it can make his radar scramble.

If there's one thing that frustrates Ponting as a captain it is a bowler who cannot bowl to a plan.

It's one of the reasons why spinners Jason Krejza and Bryce McGain came and went from Test cricket so swiftl. It's a reason why Peter Siddle, though his Test record is not spectacular, is highly rated in that if he is told to rough 'em up he can, but if he is ordered to bowl five cheap overs outside off stump he will do that as well. Plan A or Plan B.

Most captains are control freaks and Ponting is no different.

The higher the stakes in a series and they are as high as the Moon next week the more Ponting craves for low-maintenance employees.

If Mitchell Johnson shines this series, Australia will win the Ashes. (ANI)

India in snooker team event final, shooters bite the dust

Mon, Nov 15 10 03:23 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 15 (PTI) India''s good run in cue sports continued for the second day in a row with the men''s snooker team assuring itself of at least a siver medal but the fancied shooters came a cropper on the third day of competitions in the 16th Asian Games here today. The snooker trio of veteran Yasin Merchant, Sneh Aditya Mehta and Brijesh Damani proved too strong for Pakistan as they demolished their arch rivals 3-0 to set up a gold medal clash against hosts China. But the strong shooting contingent, which has provided India the bulk of the medals so far, drew a blank at the Aoti shooting range failing to qualify in all the events. The men''s hockey team began their campaign on a rousing note by thrashing lowly Hong Kong 7-0 in a group-B league match while the paddlers endured a mixed day in the individual competitions with only Kumarsen Shamini making it to the second round of the mixed as well as women''s singles event. In swimming, Virdhawal Khade was the lone Indian swimmer who made an impression by making the cut for the 50m freestyle finals while the rest fell by the wayside in the qualifying stages of their respective events. While the snooker players were the ones who kept themselves in medal reckoning in the morning, star shooters like Gagan Narang and Tejaswini Sawant came up with below-par performances in windy conditions to spoil India''s medal chances. The overcast conditions upset India''s hopes for a medal in the men''s 50m rifle prone event in the Asian Games as the country''s shooting trio, including Gagan Narang, failed to advance to the finals. Narang, who secured two silver medals in the 10m air rifle event on the opening day including the team honours, was second-best among Indians by finishing a lowly 24th with 587 points. But this is not the 27-year-old Commonwealth Games hero''s main event at the distance and he would have a shot at the 50m three position competition to be held on November 18. Third Indian entrant Surinder Singh Rathod was 27th with a tally of 586. More PTI SSR MRM

Shane Bond unlikely to reconcile with dad following charge

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 02:57 PM

Auckland (New Zealand), Nov. 15 (ANI): Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has acknowledged his father John's support, but doubts they will reconcile.

John has revealed the cause of a bitter family feud that has seen him ostracised from his son.

John Bond said that his marriage to Shane's mother Judith ended more than five years ago amid allegations of infidelity.

The 59-year-old said he was wrongly accused of cheating on Shane's mother but the fallout from the divorce saw Shane and his sister Tracey break off contact.

In his autobiography, Looking Back, Shane said his father, who was his "hero" growing up, had let him down.

"He is no longer a part of my life, or the lives of his grandchildren," Shane wrote.

Speaking for the first time about the rift, John said that he was never given a chance to explain himself.

"Whether my wife and I split up or not, it had nothing to do with my kids. They have chosen to make it their issue. They never bothered to ask my side of the story," stuff.co.nz quoted John, as saying.

John, a truck driver now living in Blenheim, said the divorce dragged through court for over a year.

"I was accused of ripping people off, I was accused of having affairs. I heard it all through the family and I'm sick of it. Now I don't even have a photo of my son and me together. If I hadn't have been there, he couldn't have done it. Shane has done very well and I am very proud of him but that part of my life is gone," John said.

John said he spotted a special talent in Shane from age six and coached his son's teams.

He said: "I knew from the day that he picked up a cricket ball for the Black Midgets in Upper Hutt when he was six that he was something special.

John said Shane lived at home until he was 25 as he chased his cricketing dream, and was selected for the Black Caps aged 26. "That was my proudest moment. He came to ask me for advice but by that stage he didn't need me to tell him anything."

Shane had acknowledged his father's influence but also said the pair would probably never reconcile.

"It hurts when the man you grow up loving and respecting, in many respects he was my hero, lets you down. Those personal issues have driven us apart, probably forever, but I need to acknowledge the massive influence he had on my early development as a cricketer," said Shane. (ANI)

Asian Games badminton: China clinch women's team title for ninth time

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 02:47 PM

Guangzhou, Nov 15 (IANS) China Monday clinched the women's badminton team trophy for the ninth time at the Asian Games, sweeeping aside Thailand 3-0 in the final.

China have collected all the women's team titles but one in 1994 when the badminton powerhouse failed to clinch any title at the Asiad at Hiroshima, Japan.

World number one Wang Xin staved off a tough challenge from 15-year-old Ratchanok Intanon, winning 20-22, 21-17, 21-14, Xinhua reported.

'I was prepared but did not expect the match to be so tough, I think I was a little nervous,' said Wang, who just turned 24.

For Ratchanok, there was nothing to lose against a strong Chinese opponent.

'I'm very satisfied with my performance as I tried my best. I didn't think I could take it to three games,' said Ratchanok, who replaced Salakjit Ponsana as the first singles.

Wang Shixian extended China's lead to 2-0 by beating Nitchaon Jindapol 21-13, 21-12.

'You think I am not the nervous type, but I was really under stress in the match,' said the 20-year-old Wang.

Jiang Yanjiao made her first appearance at these Games and secured the win for China after defeating S. Taerattanachai, 21-15, 21-10.

England bowlers skip warmup to head for Brisbane early

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 02:37 PM

England signalled the probable makeup of their first Ashes test bowling attack on Monday with the decision to send four players to Brisbane early rather than playing a warmup match in Tasmania.

Pacemen Stuart Broad, Steve Finn and James Anderson, and offspinner Graeme Swann would leave Hobart on Wednesday, after the first day of England's four-day match against Australia A, to begin preparations for the Nov. 25 test, coach Andy Flower said.

"The conditions in Hobart are very different in Brisbane and the ones we will be facing in the first test," Flower told reporters in a wet and chilly Hobart.

"We want to give that group of bowlers a little head start in those conditions so they're going three days earlier than the rest of us."

Flower added while they had signalled their likely bowling attack for the first test there was still a possibility for the bowlers who played in Hobart to put themselves into contention not only for Brisbane but further into the series.

"(Tim) Bresnan, (Chris) Tremlett and Monty Panesar haven't had a chance in the middle yet so they should be desperate to get out there and prove themselves," Flower added.

SAME ATTACK

"Without a doubt I would say one or two of those guys will be playing test cricket in the next couple of months.

"You don't have situations where the same bowling attack plays five tests in a row.

"It's a very real opportunity for them and if they perform they could be playing in the first test."

The 24-year-old Broad, whose height should be well suited to extract bounce from the Gabba pitch, said he was pleased to be heading to Brisbane early.

"I see it as an opportunity to get used to the conditions," Broad said. "We are going to have times when we spend a lot of time in the sun and humidity and we need to make sure our bodies are right for that." Broad said he had felt the four, who had played their opening two games against Western Australia and South Australia, were gelling well as a unit prior to the test.

"We have had two fantastic warmup games as a bowling group together and we have got some really good plans together and we have communicated well," Broad said.

"We are feeling fairly confident as a bowling unit, its (now) all about mental and physical preparation for the test match.

"We all feel we have good rhythm and feel confident of taking wickets and are ready to go."

Capello goes to war against England stars boozing culture

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 02:07 PM

London, Nov.15 (ANI): England football team coach Fabio Capello has gone to war against the boozing culture that has become a habit with some of the squad's stars.

Since taking over as England boss, the Italian could be forgiven for believing that the Premier League is beset by a drinking culture, that its multi-millionaire stars are running wild off the pitch.

According to The Sun, hardly a week passes without the graphic evidence being laid out in front of him through unwanted newspaper headlines and grainy, unflattering photographs, usually snatched from an opportunist's mobile phone.

Capello recognizes a drinking culture exists in his adopted country, but on the eve of England's tough Wembley examination against France he warns that there is no hiding place for his players.

Waving his mobile phone in the air, Capello warned: "You can know everything about what happens in someone's life because of this. It can record all the time. It can take pictures. You can find everything on Facebook etc.

"This is the worst thing. Because of this people can speak about this person drinking or this person being out."

Capello shared the frustration and disappointment of his fellow Italian Roberto Mancini, the Manchester City boss, when pictures emerged of England players Joe Hart and Adam Johnson being involved in a drinking spree in Scotland.

Capello added: "I saw the pictures. Mancini said they needed to change their lifestyles. Players have to be careful.

The consequences of a drink culture, insists the England boss, can impact later in a player's career.

"If a player drinks a lot, his career will probably be shorter. This is important. The players have to understand the effect drink has on their bodies," he said.

Alcohol is banned at England get-togethers. Capello confirmed. (ANI)

ICC tribunal hearings over Pak trio in Jan will have no link with Oct findings: Lorgat

Published>Mon, Nov 15 10 01:37 PM

Karachi, Nov 15(ANI): International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat has advised suspended Pakistan cricketers and their lawyers to not mix the hearings of the tribunal held last month and the Doha hearings scheduled in January.

Lorgat said that the presence of the ICC Code of Conduct Commission Chairman, Michael Beloff, in the hearing would have no bearing on the outcome of the appeal.

"The appeals hearing was held to see whether the provisional suspensions on the players were justified. It had no relevance to the charges against them," the Daily Times quoted Lorgat, as saying.

"In the tribunal hearing in January the tribunal will determine whether the charges brought against the players have substance or not. It will decide if the players are guilty or not of violating the ACU code of conduct," he added.

He insisted that there should be no concern from anyone, as under the commission rules, its chairman had to sit in tribunal hearings.

Pakistan Test captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, were suspended in September after a British tabloid alleged that they were involved in 'spot-fixing' the Lord's Test against England in August.

Earlier, the code of conduct commission had upheld the trio's suspensions after a two-day hearing in Dubai.

The innocence or guilt of the players will now be judged in the independent tribunal by Beloff, Justice Albie Sachs and Sharad Rao. (ANI)
