Maradona sacked as Argentina's football coach

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 12:08 PM

Washington, Jul 28 (ANI): Argentine Football Association has decided not to renew Diego Maradona's contract, showing him the door as the country's football coach before he could resign.

The Argentine Football Association decision on Tuesday comes three-and-half-weeks after Maradona coached team led by ace playmaker Lionel Messi was eliminated from the World Cup.

"Diego shut himself off to any change. Diego has all the right to do what he wants. But so does AFA," said executive committee member Luis Segura on Argentine television.

The federation had offered Maradona a four-year contract through the 2014 World Cup, but Maradona said he would do so only if his entire staff remained.

That was unacceptable to AFA president Julio Grondona. He had asked for several assistants to be replaced, including Maradona's close friend Alejandro Mancuso.

The federation said its executive committee unanimously decided to not keep Mardona, The Washington Post reports.

AFA spokesman Ernesto Cherquis Bialo called the decision "very painful," but said there was no way to solve the impasse.

"The president said that there was a significant difference between what AFA wanted to achieve and Maradona's aspirations for the future. There was a wide gap, and it was impossible to narrow it," Cherquis Bialo said.

Bialo said there might be a role in the future for Maradona.

Youth team manager Sergio Batista was appointed interim coach for the August 11 exhibition match at Ireland, followed by a September 7 home exhibition match against world champion Spain. (ANI)

Woman sets world record, slowest to swim English Channel

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 11:18 AM

London, July 28 (IANS) A woman shattered a nearly 90-year world record for swimming across the English Channel - by being the slowest person ever.

Jackie Cobell took 28 hours and 44 minutes to cross the channel. She was forced off course and she ended up swimming 64 miles, which is nearly three times more than the 21-mile direct route from Dover to Calais.

In 1923, Henry Sullivan set the slow record of 26 hours and 50 minutes.

'I had no idea of the time. I kept seeing the beach and thinking I was nearly there, then the tide would sweep me along the coast. My arms were packing up, one of my muscles in my arms ripped, but I was determined to make it,' Daily Express Wednesday quoted Cobell as saying.

Cobell, from Tonbridge, Kent, said: 'I thought I would do the channel in about 18 hours. When I reached the shore, my body was black and blue from the waves pounding me.'

All smiles for Blake after crushing win at LA Open

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 10:18 AM

American wildcard James Blake was all smiles after winning his first match since March with a crushing 6-1 6-4 demolition of Argentina's Leonardo Mayer at the LA Open on Tuesday.

Sidelined for two months with an injured right knee before returning to the ATP Tour in June, Blake broke Mayer three times before wrapping up victory in just over an hour.

The 30-year-old, a losing finalist when he last played here in 2007, fired seven aces and saved all five break points on his own serve to ease into the second round.

"I'm really happy with the way I played," Blake told reporters after winning for the first time since the opening round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.

"I went into the match with the goal of just controlling my side of the court and playing with the right kind of energy.

"I'm back to feeling healthy and I want to just play that way without the huge expectations or anything, just playing my game," added Blake, who missed the entire claycourt season because of his injury.

"I did it and it worked out well today."

In other matches, American Robby Ginepri brushed aside Serbian Ilija Bozoljac 6-3 6-4, Colombian Alejandro Falla beat Slovakia's Karol Beck 7-6 6-4 and U.S. wildcard Ryan Sweeting scraped past Belgian Kristof Vliegen 2-6 6-3 6-4.

South African qualifier Kevin Anderson powered through 6-3 6-2 against Ukrainian Illya Marchenko and will face second-seeded American and defending champion Sam Querrey in the second round on Wednesday.

British world number four Andy Murray is the top seed for this week's $619,500 event and is scheduled to play his opening match on Thursday against American qualifier Tim Smyczek, a 6-2 6-3 winner against Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili.

Kerr sets sights on retrieving top ranking

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 08:18 AM

SOUTHPORT, England - American Cristie Kerr goes into this week's Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale, the final major of the season, determined to fight her way back to the top of the world rankings.

The 2007 U.S. Women's Open Champion became the first American to hold the number one spot after she collected her second major title with a record 12-shot victory in the LPGA Championship in Rochester last month.

Having spent three weeks as the world's best woman golfer, she has now slipped to number three behind South Korea's Shin Ji-yai, who won the Evian Masters on Sunday, and Japan's Ai Miyazato.

"I definitely want to finish the year as world number one," said the 32-year-old Kerr ahead of Thursday's start. "It is very important to me. I am a proud American and I want to be the number one player but I know I'll need a couple more tournament wins.

"I love the British Open. The links courses are so different and it is a great challenge. I remember playing here at Birkdale in 2005 (she finished joint fifth) and the weather was really bad. I hope it is better this week, but the wind always helps to make it interesting."

Kerr's best finish at the British was joint second behind Sherri Steinhauer at Royal Lytham and St Annes in 2006, while she tied for eighth behind Scotland's Catriona Matthew, also at Lytham, last year.

Miyazato made her British Open debut at Birkdale in 2005 and finished joint 11th. A multiple winner in her native Japan, she says she struggled to fit into the U.S. way of life when she joined the LPGA Tour in 2006, but she got her breakthrough win in the Evian Masters last year and has added four more victories this season.

She was world number one before being knocked off top place by Shin this week, and showed her liking for links golf by finishing third at Lytham last year.

"I am really happy with my season and I always love the week at the British," said Miyazato. "The courses are so different and you have to conjure up different shots but it is good fun."

Maradona dropped as Argentina coach

Argentina's national soccer coach Diego Maradona speaks to the media at Miraflores Palace in Caracas...

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 08:16 AM

Diego Maradona's stormy spell as Argentina coach came to an end on Tuesday when the Argentine Football Association (AFA) voted unanimously not to renew his contract.

Maradona's future had been in doubt since Argentina's 4-0 thrashing by Germany in the World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa this month, less than two years since his headline-grabbing appointment.

"There needed to be some changes among Diego's staff ... and we couldn't come to an agreement," AFA chief Julio Grondona told reporters. "No one's being kicked out, a contract hasn't been renewed because we didn't have the conditions to do so."

An AFA spokesman cited "unbridgeable differences" with the flamboyant Maradona, who led Argentina to World Cup victory as captain in 1986 and is adored by many Argentines.

The team's earlier-than-expected exit from the tournament followed a shaky qualifying campaign, but the former player was still given a hero's welcome when the squad returned home and President Cristina Fernandez urged him to stay on.

Several dozen fans, some banging drums and chanting, gathered outside the AFA's headquarters after Tuesday's announcement.

Speculation had mounted ahead of the meeting that Maradona would not stay on as coach -- a position he had held since November 2008 -- because of the disagreement over his coaching staff.

Maradona, 49, said Sunday he wanted to stay on, but only if he could keep control over the choice of his assistants.

BEST-EVER PLAYERS

Maradona was widely seen as one of the world's best-ever players in his 1980s' heyday, but he battled drug addiction, obesity and alcoholism for years after retiring from the game in the 1990s.

That made his comeback as national team coach an even more remarkable personal achievement, especially because he had very little experience as a manager.

He had a patchy tenure as coach of Argentina, however, even though the team's convincing wins in their opening World Cup games propelled them into the list of favorites.

Maradona's exit means Argentina need to find a new coach for the Copa America regional tournament next year but Grondona said there was plenty of time to recruit a new training staff.

Local media said former Boca Juniors coach Carlos Bianchi, who led the Buenos Aires club to a string of national and continental titles in two stints between 1998 and 2004, was a popular favorite.

Other names circulating as possible successors include Estudiantes coach Alex Sabella, Independiente's former coach Americo Gallego, former Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa and ex-River Plate, Inter Milan and Argentina striker Ramon Diaz.

Grondona said youth team coach Sergio Batista, Maradona's former 1986 team mate, was the logical choice as caretaker coach and he will lead the team for a friendly against Ireland in Dublin Aug. 11.

PREVIEW - Weekley needs his compass at the Greenbrier Classic

Wed, Jul 28 10 06:58 AM

Playing good golf at this week's inaugural Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia could be the least of Boo Weekley's worries as he prepares for Thursday's opening round.

The affable U.S. Ryder Cup player, like many of his peers, is staying on site at the luxurious Greenbrier resort where he fears he will be unable to locate the hosting Old White Course from the labyrinthine hotel.

"This hotel is amazing," a wide-eyed Weekley told reporters on Tuesday. "It's unreal how big this place is. It's like going to the White House. You get into a hallway and you can walk forever.

"I might have to get my compass out to find my way back to the golf course from where I'm staying at up there."

Weekley, a double winner on the PGA Tour who has struggled for form this season due to a shoulder injury, said he had already got lost three times trying to plot his way out of the hotel.

"I had to call my agent (manager)," he added with a broad smile. "I ask him: 'How in the hell do I get where I'm going?'

"He says: 'Just try to get downstairs.' I'm like: 'Well, where is the elevator at?' I couldn't even find that.."

A home-spun Florida native who relishes country pursuits such as hunting and fishing, Weekley would dearly love to regain form at The Greenbrier, which is located in the Allegheny Mountains.

GETTING JUMP-STARTED

"This would be a great place to get it jump-started," said the 37-year-old who has recorded only two top-10 finishes in 19 PGA Tour starts this season. "My game is starting to come around.

"I found me some drivers I can actually play now and found some irons I feel a little better with. The main thing is just getting out there ... seeing if the putter can get hot."

World number five Jim Furyk, who has won twice on the 2010 PGA Tour, is the highest-ranked player in the field but, in many respects, no one holds an advantage with this week's $6 million event being brand new.

"It's a little bit different," said Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge, a graduate of nearby Virginia Tech. "We go to the same venues every year and some guys have been there for 20, 25 years. So this will definitely even out the playing field."

The Greenbrier Classic has replaced the Buick Open, which was removed from the schedule last year when troubled Detroit automaker General Motors announced it had withdrawn its title sponsorships on the PGA Tour.

Asked what type of player was best suited to the Old White Course, de Jonge replied: "It's not gonna favour any one kind of player. The fairways are fairly narrow, so you got to drive it straight as well."

Other leading players at The Greenbrier include Spanish Ryder Cup player Sergio Garcia, former PGA Championship winner Davis Love III of the United States and Swede Carl Pettersson, winner of the Canadian Open on Sunday.

Another twist to the weightlifting controversy

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 05:48 AM

In a twist to the sexual harassment controversy, all the 16 women weightlifters training at the Commonwealth Games camp, through a letter, have asked the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) to reinstate the suspended coach Ramesh Malhotra.

After the Olympics bronze medalist Karnam Malleswari had alleged that Malhotra had been sexually harassing lifters for more than a decade, the coach was asked to move out of the camp.

Interestingly, the letter was dispatched just ahead of the inquiry committee's visit to the camp to speak to the women lifters. The committee comprises of IWF vice-president Kumbasi Subramanya, veteran coach Pal Singh Sandhu and joint Secretary Madan Lal Savli. Those in the know say that the lifters were forced to sign the letter but chief national coach Harnam Singh denied it.

"I have read the signed letter in which the girls have supported the coach. There was no pressure on them to sign," he revealed.

The letter, a copy of which is in possession of The Indian Express, states that no one from the camp had complained against Malhotra. The letter further states, "The morale of the team members have been affected and this will certainly affect the performance of the women team in the CWG 2010".

Miller hoping to taste Champions League again with AIK

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 05:16 AM

AIK Solna's abrasive Scottish coach Alex Miller has publicly criticised his players, sold two fan favourites and introduced a tough disciplinary regime in the few short weeks since he took over the Swedish champions.

All this will be forgotten, though, if he can steer his team to the Champions League group stage they have not reached since 1999. AIK host Rosenborg in a tough third-round qualifier on Wednesday with the return in Trondheim a week later.

"It will be a very difficult game. Rosenborg have a very good tradition of playing Champions League games," Miller told Reuters on the eve of the clash with the Norwegian champions.

"The most important thing in the Champions League is not to lose goals at home. Their players move the ball quickly, good passing construction, good defence.

Despite winning the double last year, AIK were flirting with relegation when the 61-year-old Miller contacted them.

The Scot, who spent nine years at Liverpool as a coach and chief scout, was out of work following a spell in Japan and e-mailed the Swedish club to inform them of his availability.

He was rewarded with an 18-month contract but it has not all been plain sailing. Sweden is famed for its consensus society and Miller's authoritarian style is not to everyone's liking.

HARDLINE APPROACH

Any doubts about his reputation as a hard man were removed at his first news conference where he recounted a tale from his playing days with Rangers in Scotland.

He suffered a broken jaw midway through a cup final, but carried on regardless. "My face was sore," he told reporters, "but you don't play with your face."

Despite criticism of his style, Miller believes his hardline approach is bearing fruit.

"I think the senior players have taken to my methods, they work hard and they understand my mentality and what I'm trying to do with the team," Miller said on Tuesday.

"The younger players don't have the knowledge tactically that the senior players have (but) they are beginning to understand".

After a recent defeat by Malmo he publicly criticised his players, saying he needed fewer boys and more men on the field.

"When you're away from home you've got to stand up and be counted. You have the crowd against you but the grass is the same colour and the pitch is the same size," Miller said.

Miller is no stranger to the Champions League having worked for Liverpool during their triumphant campaign in 2005.

"I had the good fortune to be with Liverpool when they won it and guys who were millionaires were crying. It's not about the money, it's about getting the medal."

Miller is hoping to taste success in the Champions League again and has watched Rosenborg carefully as part of his preparations for their qualifying encounter.

"They defend as a team and they attack as a team but we're at home and we'll have to try to increase our attacking qualities. At the end of the tie, both teams will know that they've been in a hard fixture."

NEWSMAKER - Maradona's life as tumultuous as ever

Argentina soccer coach Diego Maradona arrives at Simon Bolivar airport in Maiquetia outside Caracas July...

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 04:58 AM

Diego Maradona's spell as coach of Argentina's national soccer team was as turbulent as the rest of his erratic life on and off the pitch.

The former player, adored by many Argentines, was given a hero's welcome despite the team's 4-0 World Cup quarter-final defeat by Germany earlier this month.

But his popularity among fans, and even the backing of President Cristina Fernandez, was not enough to keep him in the job, and football chiefs voted unanimously on Tuesday not to renew his contract.

Maradona, 49, rose from a shanty town to become one of the world's greatest sportsmen, plunged the depths of drug abuse and then bounced back to play a starring role on the touchline in at the World Cup in South Africa.

In his homeland, he is widely considered to have been a greater player even than Brazil's Pele and has gained the iconic status of fellow Argentines Che Guevara and Eva Peron.

Best remembered for leading Argentina to World Cup victory in 1986 when he scored arguably the greatest goal the tournament had ever seen against England, he attracted a vigil outside his hospital when he spent 10 days in intensive care in 2004.

For some, though, his career will always be tarnished by his notorious 'Hand of God' goal against England at the same World Cup and his expulsion from the 1994 finals for a doping offence, one of three such bans in his brilliant but tormented career.

STOCKY MARADONA

A stocky man who stands only 1.64 metres tall, Maradona's magical skills and electric pace were dulled only by injury and a tendency towards being overweight later in his career.

The fifth of eight children of a factory worker, he grew up in the Villa Fiorito shanty town on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.

Discovered in street kickabouts by the scout for Argentine first division club Argentinos Juniors, Francisco Cornejo, the football prodigy made his league debut at 15.

His international debut followed two years later, although he was left out of the 1978 World Cup squad by Cesar Luis Menotti in a decision which remains controversial even now.

Maradona won his only Argentine league title with Boca Juniors, the club closest to his heart, in 1981 but by then his marvellous close control, free-kicks and passing had attracted the attention of wealthy European clubs.

He had two unhappy seasons at Barcelona, marred by illness and injury, before moving to Napoli in 1984.

Maradona enjoyed the status of a demi-god in the poverty-stricken southern Italian port and, with a team built around him, helped transform a mediocre club into one of the best in Italy, winning two "Scudetto" titles and a UEFA Cup.

But after 1990, drugs and alcohol began taking over.

In 1991, Maradona was handed a 15-month worldwide suspension for doping and called to trial in Naples over alleged links with a vice ring.

He was banned again for 15 months after testing positive for drugs at the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

On his return to Argentina, he was convicted for an earlier incident when he fired an airgun at reporters, receiving a two-year suspended jail sentence.

In between, he had playing spells at Sevilla, Newell's Old Boys and Boca where missed training sessions became the norm.

He also tried his hand at coaching, firstly with struggling provincial club Deportivo Mandiyu and then with more fashionable Racing Club. His 23 games in charge produced only three wins.

ADDICTIVE PERSONALITY

He retired from professional soccer in 1997 after failing another doping test and almost died from cocaine-induced heart problems in 2000.

For the next five years, he underwent drug rehabilitation living on-and-off in Cuba and socialising with Fidel Castro.

Argentine media obsessed over Maradona's addictive personality, with blanket coverage of his 10 days in intensive care in 2004, a gastric bypass operation the following year and his 2007 spell in hospital for alcohol-induced hepatitis.

Drug and alcohol experts called Maradona's abuse of one substance after another a slow-motion suicide.

Maradona's appointment as Argentina coach in November 2008 thrust the team into the unknown. At first, he looked lost as a series of embarrassing defeats left Argentina in danger of failing to qualify for this year's World Cup.

But once in South Africa, he revelled in the spotlight, putting on his own show on the touchline as his team won four games in a row to reach the quarter-finals.

It ended in tears, however, when a disorganised Argentina were routed 4-0 by old enemies Germany leaving Maradona to face what he called the hardest day of his life.

"This was (like) a punch from Muhammad Ali. I have no strength for anything," he said at the time.

FACTBOX - Chequered career of Argentina's Diego Maradona

Argentina soccer coach Diego Maradona arrives at Simon Bolivar airport in Maiquetia outside Caracas July...

Wed, Jul 28 10 04:18 AM

REUTERS - Diego Maradona's spell as Argentina coach came to an end on Tuesday after the country's soccer association voted unanimously not to renew his contract.

Here are some facts about the career of Maradona, who was one of the most gifted players to grace the game:

ARGENTINA COACH

* Maradona, initially a rank outsider in the race to replace former coach Alfio Basile, had only had two short stints as a club coach in the mid-1990s, with Deportivo Mandiyu and Racing Club. His 23 games in charge produced just three wins.

* Appointed Argentina coach on Nov. 4 2008, he made a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Scotland 15 days later.

* In Maradona's first competitive match as coach in March, Argentina thumped Venezuela 4-0, only to lose 6-1 in Bolivia in their next outing.

* World Cup qualifying defeats by Ecuador, Brazil and Paraguay left Argentina in danger of missing out on the finals.

* Victory in their final two qualifying games against Peru and Uruguay ensured they booked a spot at the finals.

* Maradona appeared before a FIFA disciplinary committee on Nov. 15 following a foul-mouthed outburst after Argentina's 1-0 victory over Uruguay in their final World Cup qualifier on Oct. 14. He was banned for two months and fined more than $24,000.

* Revelling in the spotlight, sporting a new beard and, unusually for him, wearing a suit, Maradona provided his own show on the touchline at the World Cup.

Argentina won all three of their group games and beat Mexico 3-1 in the second round but it all went wrong in the quarter-final against Germany when, poorly organised in midfield, they were routed 4-0.

* Maradona, criticised for failing to bring the best out of Lionel Messi, said it was the hardest day of his life.

BEST IN THE WORLD

* A football genius, Maradona led Argentina to their second World Cup triumph in Mexico in 1986, his crowning glory.

* Maradona scored the 'Hand of God' goal as Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the World Cup quarter-finals and led Argentina's 3-2 victory over West Germany in the 1986 final.

* The stocky Argentine also inspired southern Italian club Napoli to their first league titles in 1987 and 1990 and the UEFA Cup in 1989 during a decade at the top of his sport.

FALL FROM GRACE

* Maradona's fall was sudden and swift. After he had coaxed a mediocre Argentina team to their second successive World Cup final in Rome in July 1990, he failed a doping test in 1991.

* He was suspended for 15 months, investigated over alleged Mafia ties and later held in Argentina for cocaine possession.

* He tested positive for drug use during the 1994 World Cup and was suspended from the tournament. He came back with Boca Juniors in 1995 but failed another drug test two years later before retiring.

* In 1998, he was given a two-year suspended jail sentence for an incident four years earlier when he fired an air pistol at reporters who were doorstepping his home.

RAGS TO RICHES

* One of eight children of a factory worker, Maradona was born on Oct. 30, 1960, in a shantytown on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. He made his debut with Argentinos Juniors in 1976, days before turning 16.

* He helped Boca Juniors win the Argentine championship in 1981 and was transferred to Barcelona in 1982. He moved to Italy's Napoli in 1984.

* He was admitted to hospital in Uruguay in 2000 with heart problems and tests revealed cocaine use. He underwent drug rehabilitation in Cuba.

* Appearing overweight, Maradona spent 10 days in 2004 in intensive care in Argentina with heart and breathing problems. He was confined to a psychiatric hospital.

* Slimmer after a stomach-stapling operation, Maradona launched a successful television talk show in Argentina in 2005 that lasted for one season.

* In May 2007 a clean-shaven Maradona vowed to get fit and stay healthy in his first public appearance since he was admitted to hospital for alcohol-induced hepatitis. He said then his dream was to coach Argentina's national team.

Pakistan bowling attack overrated, says Collingwood

England's Paul Collingwood prepares to throw a ball during a training session at the National...

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 03:58 AM

England batsman Paul Collingwood believes the Pakistan bowling attack that helped end Australia's seven-match winning streak has a lot to do to prove it is the best in the world.

Pakistan beat Australia in a test for the first time in 15 years, at Headingley on Saturday, to draw the series 1-1.

Captain Salman Butt lauded his pace bowling trio of Mohammad Aamer, Umar Gul and Mohammad Asif, who he claimed was the best new-ball bowler he had seen since Australia's Glenn McGrath.

Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, whose team were bowled out for a 26-year low of 88 at Headingley, also praised the pace bowlers who claimed a collective 30 wickets in two tests, and he called leg-spinner Danish Kaneria "world-class".

But Collingwood said Australia's bowlers were the world's best as he played down the hype ahead of England's four-test series with Pakistan starting at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

"I think they (Pakistan's bowlers) have got a lot of talent but to say they are the number one pace attack in the world is probably over the mark," he told reporters at England's training base at Loughborough University on Tuesday.

"They have played in conditions recently where it (the ball) has done a fair bit. Australia for me are still a very, very strong bowling attack," he added.

"They have got a lot of pace there and I guess if they had have got those same conditions on the first day they would have caused a lot of problems.

SWING BOWLERS

"They have got skill and we need to be careful but I think we can handle whatever they throw at us.

"When India came over (in 2007) and used the Dukes ball they probably surprised us at that time with the amount of swing they were getting, so they (Pakistan) are going to pose similar questions. Hopefully, we are better prepared this time round.

"We don't want to go overboard that these guys are the best thing since sliced bread, or Wasim Akram. We have seen that they have got a lot of skill but if we can get through those periods where it can be really tricky, we can get on top of them."

They are the kind of words that will either come back to haunt Collingwood or show him to be a perceptive voice.

Pundits were won over by Pakistan's attack, and 18-year-old left-arm paceman Aamer especially, that exploited overcast conditions weighted heavily in their favour.

Psychologically, Collingwood might have raised the confidence levels of the Australians ahead of the five-match Ashes series from Nov. 25 while also giving Pakistan greater motivation to prove him wrong.

The Australian attack struggled in both tests against pakistan as Mitchell Johnson failed to rediscover his best rhythm for his second successive tour of England.

Australia's left-arm pace bowler Doug Bollinger was also castigated by former England bowler Bob Willis who he said "doesn't look like a test bowler to me".

However, seam and swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus was on impressive form as he returned to test cricket for the first time in nine months after recovering from a knee injury.

Chambers and Lemaitre through to 100 semis

Dwain Chambers of Britain sprints to a first place finish in heat 1 round 1...

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 02:38 AM

The much-anticipated head-to-head between Britain's Dwain Chambers and Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre stayed on track after both sprinters won their 100 metres heats at the European championships on Tuesday.

Chambers, who was stripped of the 2002 European title after admitting to doping, powered down the inside lane of the Olympic stadium's blue track and eased up before the line for a comfortable victory in 10.21 seconds into a strong headwind.

Lemaitre, the fastest European this year after setting a national record of 9.98 at the French championships earlier this month, barely broke into a sweat as he recorded the quickest time of the night of 10.19 in the last of the five heats.

The pair are the only two athletes in the field to have broken 10 seconds this season, with Chambers clocking 9.99 when beating his young French rival at the European team championships last month.

"I felt comfortable enough to not go too hard too early on in the race," Chambers, 32, told reporters.

"I felt good in the warm-up. I didn't want to go out too fast and leave myself with nothing for tomorrow. You have got to do all the work from tomorrow onwards. I was happy with it."

OUTSIDE CHANCE

Ireland's Jason Smyth, the first Paralympian to compete at the Europeans, qualified in fourth behind Lemaitre in 10.43.

The double Paralympic champion is visually impaired and has about 10 percent vision compared to a person with full sight.

"I'm just thankful I got here and things went so well," Smyth, who has a personal best time of 10.32, told reporters.

Asked if he had a chance of reaching the final, the 23-year-old said: "I wouldn't want to say yes. It's a very outside chance but you never know what can happen. I'll see if I can step up another level and compete."

Defending champion Francis Obikwelu of Portugal, who was also awarded the 2002 gold medal following Chambers's positive dope test, clocked 10.27 to win heat three but there was heartbreak for Gibraltar's Dominic Carroll who was disqualified for moving in his blocks before the start.

The first four athletes in each of the five heats went through to Wednesday's semi-finals (1750 GMT). The final is also on Wednesday (1945).

Dolce & Gabbana dress Chelsea players in soccer push

Italian designers Domenico Dolce (R) and Stefano Gabbana pose for a picture as they arrive...

Wed, Jul 28 10 01:56 AM

Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have entered a 3-year deal with English soccer club Chelsea to dress their players, muscling their way in the fashion-hungry soccer market.

The soccer-loving duo, best known for their sharp men's tailoring and southern Italian style, said on Tuesday they would design the official suits and new stadium areas for the Premier League champions over the next three seasons.

"We are big football fans, for us it means healthy competition, intense passion and great discipline," Dolce and Gabbana said in a statement.

The deal marks the first partnership with a foreign top soccer club for the two designers -- whose suits already dress AC Milan players and Italy's national team. Dolce is an AC Milan fan and never misses their home matches at Milan's San Siro stadium.

Financial details of the partnership have not been disclosed.

Under the deal, the Premier League champions, including the Italian manager and former AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti, will wear blue suits -- the club's colour -- with two-button jackets and blue jacquard ties.

Dolce and Gabbana -- whose wholesale sales were of 1.379 billion euros in the fiscal year ended in March -- will also design exclusive spaces at the Stamford Bridge stadium for guests attending matches.

For their worldwide appeal to fans, sculpted soccer stars have always been a safe bet for fashion brands such as Dolce and Gabbana, whose business interest in the game dates back to 2003.

The Italian designers also hired five Italian soccer players to strip down for their underwear campaigns ahead of the World Cup in South Africa in June. Italy was knocked out in the group stage.

Former NFL owner to lead U.S. F1 project investment

Wed, Jul 28 10 01:18 AM

Red McCombs, a former owner of the NFL Minnesota Vikings and NBA San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets, was introduced on Tuesday as the key investor behind a project to bring Formula One back to the United States.

McCombs, rated by Forbes magazine in 2005 as one of the wealthiest people in the United States, was introduced during a media briefing that confirmed Austin, Texas, as the location for the the purpose-built F1 facility.

"Bringing Formula One back to the United States represents the opportunity of a lifetime and one that any city in the world would want," McCombs said in a statement.

"The size and scope of an F1 event is comparable to hosting a Super Bowl and will bring substantial economic benefit to Austin, San Antonio and the entire state of Texas."

A Texas native, McCombs has owned nearly 400 businesses during his career, including McCombs Automotive Group and McCombs Energy. He is also the co-founder of Clear Channel Communications.

Formula One commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone announced in May that the grand prix circuit would return to the United States in 2012 with a 10-year deal to stage the race in Texas.

The United States last hosted a Formula One race at Indianapolis in 2007.

Since that deal ended, Ecclestone had been seeking an alternative venue with teams, car manufacturers and sponsors all keen to return to one of their biggest markets.

Numerous other U.S. tracks have hosted races over the years, including the Texas city of Dallas in 1984 which held it on a temporary street circuit.

Watkins Glen in New York state was the last purpose-built permanent road course to host the race in 1980. The race at Indianapolis used a part of the famed oval, with a section cutting across the infield.

Chambers and Lemaitre safely through to 100 semis

Dwain Chambers of Britain sprints to a first place finish in heat 1 round 1...

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 12:58 AM

Ireland's Jason Smyth, the first Paralympian to compete at the Europeans, qualified in fourth behind Lemaitre in 10.43.

The 23-year-old double Paralympic champion is visually impaired and has about 10 percent vision compared to a person with full sight.

Brazil airport capacity lags as World Cup looms

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 12:52 AM

Brazil's airline industry is increasingly concerned that the country will not have adequate airport capacity for the 2014 soccer World Cup because of slow expansion and growing demand for travel.

Ample credit and rising household income have caused a surge in air traffic, leaving the nation's airports struggling to keep up with demand. Industry leaders say expansions are needed to deal with existing traffic and warn that travel in the 12 cities that will host World Cup games could suffer during the tournament.

"The World Cup is a unique opportunity for Brazil to present itself on the world stage, and the airport is the first impression that a tourist gets," said Constantino de Oliveira Jr., chief executive of Brazil's second-largest airline, Gol Linhas Aereas.

"Given the historical levels of (government investment)," he added, "the situation is worrisome."

For years, infrastructure bottlenecks have been one of Brazil's biggest problems as growing auto sales and airline travel, along with a furious expansion in commodities industries, have put strains on ports, highways and airports.

Brazil is already under fire for being behind on construction of stadiums and other World Cup infrastructure.

A report by the consulting firm McKinsey and Co said at the close of 2009, seven of Brazil's 20 principal airports were struggling with overcrowding in both passenger areas and plane berths that frequently led to delays or canceled flights.

The report says Brazil's airports had capacity for 126 million passengers per year, with existing demand of 111 million that is expected to rise to 146 million by 2014. During the Cup alone, McKinsey expects as many as 6 million additional travelers moving through Brazilian airports.

"The three problems that we have in Brazil for the Cup are, No 1: airports, No. 2: airports and No. 3: airports," said Ricardo Teixeira, head of Brazil's Football Confederation, who is also charged with organizing the Cup.

STRETCHED INFRASTRUCTURE

Airport problems range from insufficient parking for both planes and cars to cramped quarters for passengers awaiting flights.

Infraero, the government agency in charge of airport management, did not respond to requests for comment.

The government expects to invest 6.5 billion reais ($3.7 billion) in airports through 2014, including about 5.5 billion reais for those in the 12 host cities.

"We are worried about government investment, yes, but we are confident that the (funding) will be invested in a time frame that will allow for growth," said Pedro Janot, CEO of No. 3 Brazilian airline Azul.

The planned outlays will have to make up for years of underinvestment. Airport investments were 42 million reais in 2003 and 270 million reais in 2007, according to government statistics.

Brazil's airport safety conditions have improved since a 2007 crash that killed almost 200 people when a plane skidded off a runway in Sao Paulo's Congonhas airport.

But critics say investments have still not kept up with demand. Passenger traffic jumped 28 percent in the first half of 2010 from a year earlier, according to Brazilian civil aviation authorities.

"A good airport is one that's constantly under construction," said Paulo Castello Branco, a vice president for TAM, Brazil's largest air carrier.

Modi's lawyers want retired judge in BCCI panel

Published>Wed, Jul 28 10 12:22 AM

New Delhi, July 27 (IANS) Suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi's lawyers Tuesday demanded the removal of Chirayu Amin and Arun Jaitely from the disciplinary panel of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the appointment of a retired supreme court judge in the panel.

At the second hearing of the disciplinary committee, which lasted over three-and-a-half hours, Modi's lawyers debated on the issue of recusal of the two members from the disciplinary committee.

Modi has maintained that Amin, IPL's interim chairman, and Jaitley, governing council member of the league, would be biased against him during the disciplinary proceedings. The third member of the committee is union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Modi has been charged on several counts ranging from financial irregularities to bid-rigging as chairman of the cash-rich IPL.

'The core issue of recusal of two members from the panel was debated. Our lawyers argued the case. The BCCI will be allowed to come out with a rejoinder,' Modi's counsel Mehmood Abdi told reporters after the hearing.

'A retired Supreme Court judge must be there in the committee. We have grave concern about the BCCI's stance. If they have already decided, then what's the point in all their meetings? Whosoever is doing this is hurting BCCI's cause more,' Abdi said.

Abdi said the next meeting of the committee has been scheduled for Aug 1 here.

'The meeting has been scheduled for a Sunday considering that the parliament session is going on and taking into account the convenience of the lawyers,' Abdi said.

At the meeting, Modi's lawyers also sought a number of documents from the BCCI related to the IPL and the Board's meetings.

The BCCI in a statement said: 'Mr. Modi has also sought a copy of the amended agreement between BCCI and Sony MSM. His counsel argued that this agreement is relevant for the purposes of his preparation of his defence in the main case as also the application for recusal filed by him. The BCCI has agreed to provide a copy of this agreement to the counsel for Mr. Modi on the condition that this document and its contents shall be used only for the purposes of this enquiry and the proceedings arising out of this enquiry and for no other purposes.

'The reason for this secrecy is that in the agreement signed by Sony-MSM contains a confidentiality clause and a limited waiver has been given to BCCI to limit the use of this document for Mr. Modi only for the purposes of this enquiry.'

Modi again skipped the meeting and his lawyer Venkatesh Dhond pointed out that due to security concerns it was not possible to tell when Modi could present himself before the committee.

Modi will now be available through video conferencing and if the situation with regard to threat perception changes, he would make himself available to the committee.

Modi's counsel Abdi said that his absence wont affect the hearing process.

'In the last meeting we had given reason to the BCCI about his (Modi) absence and the Board has accepted that. We feel his absence won't affect the proceedings because I am here to represent him. It will be decided if he can come later depending on the situation,' Abdi said.

Santosh Trophy: Delhi in last eight

Published>Tue, Jul 27 10 11:38 PM

Kolkata, July 27 (IANS) Delhi staved off a spirited challenge from Chattisgarh by prevailing 4-3 in the tie-breaker to scrape through into the quarter final of the 64th Santosh Trophy interstate football competition here Tuesday.

The match rolled into the penalty shoot out after the two sides finished 2-2 at the breather and half an hour of extra time failed to make any alteration to the scoreline at the Howrah Municipal Corporation stadium.

In the tie-break, Chattisgarh started off poorly as Wasim Raja and Subir Maji missed the first two setpieces.

But then Chattisgarh goalkeeper Partha Dey saved Delhi's Ashish Pandey's shot to raise his team's hopes.

However, Vikash Rawat, Bhuvan Joshi and Tuishim Mashangva found the target for Delhi from the three remaining penalties and Chattisgarh boys Harshvardhan Shende, Mohammad Siddique and Dey's successful efforts went in vain.

Playing on a slushy surface, Delhi earlier went into the lead in the 39th minute as the young Mashangva headed in off a melee.

Leading 1-0 at the breather, Delhi doubled the margin in the 47th minute, with Mashangva heading home again from close.

Chattisgarh, however, rallied back brilliantly and Siddque scampered down the right wing and slammed in 65 minutes into the game to make the scoreline 2-1.

Chattishgarh drew parity 10 minutes from close as Amjad Ali Khan put the ball into his own goal following a Delhi corner.

Indian driver Karun Chandhok will miss Sunday's Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix after also being dropped by Hispania for last weekend's race in Germany.

The Spanish-based team listed Japan's Sakon Yamamoto and Brazilian Bruno Senna as their drivers in a preview for the race issued on Tuesday.

"I can't wait to go back to the Hungaroring as I know the circuit already very well from my Formula One races with Super Aguri, Spyker F1 and with ART in GP2 series," said Yamamoto, who brings important funding to the cash-strapped team.

Chandhok, the second-highest ranked in the standings of those racing for the new teams, said before Germany that he expected HRT to pick and choose between their drivers for the remainder of the season.

He told Reuters on Tuesday that he had known already last weekend that he would not be in the car at the Hungaroring, although he would be at the track until Saturday afternoon in case he was needed.

"They are going to do what they need to do from their point of view," he said of the team's position. "What can you do? I just have to keep my chin up.

"The long summer break is coming up and we'll have to see what happens for the rest of the season."

Yamamoto, one of two test drivers with Austrian Christian Klien, failed to finish in Germany after being 20th at the British Grand Prix, where he took Senna's place.

Another term for Dalmiya in CAB certain

Tue, Jul 27 10 11:08 PM

Kolkata, Jul 27 (PTI) Jagmohan Dalmiya is all set for yet another term at the Cricket Association of Bengal with no election at its Annual General Meeting tomorrow. With nobody to challenge the Dalmiya panel, the AGM, which had seen some close battle a few years ago, will be reduced to a routine affair. In fact, last year too there was nobody to challenge Dalmiya even as there was talks of former India captain Sourav Ganguly set to contest the veteran cricket administrator. Ganguly will however be part of the AGM through the same club, Mohammadan Sporting, which he had represented last year too. This will be his third consecutive year at CAB helm after returning to the post with a convincing win over incumbent Prasun Mukherjee in 2008 elections. There will be some political colours this time around with two Trinamool Congress leaders, Sultan Ahmed and Mukul Roy, both being Union Ministers, participating in CAB working committee and the AGM. Roy will represent Greer Club, while Ahmed will represent Mohammadan Sporting in the working committee. For the first time since 2004, CAB''s AGM will not have elections on its agenda with former CAB joint secretary Amitava Banerjee, who had filed his nomination for the post of vice-president, withdrawing his candidature earlier. Add retired SC judge, remove Jaitely and Amin from panel: Modi

New Delhi, July 27 (PTI) Lalit Modi''s lawyers today pressed for the inclusion of a retired Supreme Court judge and recusal of Chirayu Amin and Arun Jaitely from the BCCI''s disciplinary panel, probing into the alleged financial irregularities of the suspended IPL Chairman. Abdi said the issue of recusal will hopefully be sorted out at the next meeting. "A retired Supreme Court judge must be there in the committee. We have grave concern about the BCCI''s stance. If they have already decided then what''s the point in all their meetings? Whosoever is doing this is hurting BCCI''s cause more," Abdi had said before going into the meeting. "In the last meeting we had given reason to the BCCI about his (Modi) absence and the Board has accepted that. We feel, his absence won''t affect the proceedings because I am here to represent him. It will be decided if he can come later depending on the situation," Abdi said. The three-member disciplinary panel, comprising Amin, Jaitley and Jyotiraditya Scindia, last met on July 16 and allowed Modi to be represented by his lawyers. Dalmiya all set to continue unchallenged as CAB chief

Published>Tue, Jul 27 10 10:48 PM

Kolkata, July 27 (IANS) Seasoned administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya is set to continue his reign in the Cricket Association of Bengal unchallenged for yet another year with his detractors not putting up any candidate in the 79th Annual General Meeting Wednesday.

The CAB AGM at the Eden Gardens, that has seen some keen contests for the top post of the cash-rich association in recent times, appears headed to be a mundane affair with the Dalmiya lobby certain to win all the posts uncontested.

After returning as CAB president with a convincing victory over incumbent Prasun Mukherjee in 2008, Dalmiya had won the 2009 elections also unopposed.

In 2006, Dalmiya and Mukherjee - the city police commissioner - fought a high-voltage election with the latter having the blessings of the state chief minister Budhadeb Bhattacharjee and Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sharad Pawar. However, Dalmiya won by five votes.

But the cricket czar had to step down in December that year following his expulsion by the BCCI - then ruled by Dalmiya's bete noire Pawar -- on charges of embezzlement and Mukherjee took over the coveted post uncontested.

Excepting a 19-month hiatus since Dec, 2006, Dalmiya has held on to the CAB president's post since 1993.

The last date for filing nomination this year was July 20, but except one extra nominee for the vice president's post, no one else filed their papers for the annual elections. And even Amitava Banerjee, the vice presidential nominee from outside the official panel, withdrew his candidature within 24 hours.

Technically, however, an election could become necessary if one or more candidates remained absent without withdrawing his nomination. In such a case, elections have to be conducted for these posts, a top CAB official said.

But the question remains as to whether Dalmiya is now eyeing a bigger role in the BCCI.

'Let's see. The coming two months leading up to September could be crucial,' said a Dalmiya loyalist.

Former Indian cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly would attend the AGM as a nominee of Mohammedan sporting, while union minister of state for shipping Mukul Roy represents Greer Sports Club.

But the West Bengal government's passage of a new taxation Bill Monday levying a 20 per cent amusement tax on sporting event tickets costing Rs.500 and more on a daily basis and Rs.3,000 and more on a season basis, could result in sparks flying at the AGM.

'In the recent World Cup soccer the South African government did not take any tax. On the other hand, it helped the event. Similarly the Delhi government has not clamped any tax on the Commonwealth Games. Rather they are helping.

'But why are taxes being levied in the state by keeping all sports bodies in the dark? Who will gain from this?' asked CAB joint secretary Biswarup Dey.

England series a stiffer challenge for Butt: Akram

Tue, Jul 27 10 10:38 PM

Karachi, Jul 27 (PTI) Pakistan team led by Salman Butt might have registered a memorable Test win over Australia in England but now they face some stiffer challenge during the four-match series against the hosts commencing from July 29 in Nottingham, feels former captain Wasim Akram. The former pace great today said that England were always a tough side to beat at home and at the present they had been playing good in Test matches and one-day internationals. "Apart from some upset results, the England team has been doing well and they have some good players to exploit the English conditions," Akram said. "Pakistan did very well to beat Australia at Leeds and the win was well deserved and would have boosted the morale and confidence of the players. But I think England would be a tougher opponent than Australia because their players are more adapt at utilising the English conditions," he added. "It will not be an easy task to beat England at home and I think the series is going to be the first real Test for Salman who led the side sensibly at Leeds," Akram said. The former left-arm pacer, however, said that there was no harder series than this to develop Butt as a captain. "I think it''s a great achievement the way we beat Australia against the odds and it will definitely instill confidence in the young Pakistan side. "We have some good young players but we must not get complacent and start forgetting other experienced players like Younis (Khan) or (Mohammad) Yousuf," he said. Akram said the conditions at Headingley allowed the Pakistani swing bowlers to flourish. However, if the Test was played in Pakistan, according to Akram, the spinners would have come into play. "Had this match been played in Lahore or Karachi, then spin and reverse swing would have been more effective. All the three pacers Mohammed Aamer, Umar Gul and Mohammad Asif can do a bit of reverse swing and they would have been handful even on home turf," Akram said.

HI election: High Court forces govt to withdraw HI poll observer

Published>Tue, Jul 27 10 09:18 PM

New Delhi, July 27 (IANS) The sports ministry Tuesday pulled out its observer from Wednesday's Hockey India (HI) election after the Delhi High Court said that the Indian Hockey Federation and not HI is the controlling body of the game.

On a day of dramatic developments, Delhi High Court, which had last month ruled the suspension of K.P.S Gill-led IHF illegal, said unless the government clears its status HI cannot go ahead with its election as it is a private body and IHF is the recognised authority to run the sport.

It is not clear whether HI would still go ahead with the election as none of its top officials was available for their views, though one of the members said that the election would be held.

'Observer or no observer, HI will hold the long-awaited election,' said the official not wanting to be named.

The High Court directed the government and the HI to issue a clarification by evening to all the state units that it is a private body.

'The HI election can be held only after the clarification by the government and HI,' said the court order.

The ministry issued a statement in the evening, saying it is withdrawing observer

S.Mendiratta.

'The presence of government observer at the HI annual general meeting does not in any manner reflect its endorsement of the election process or its outcome,' sports ministry said in a statement.

'However, in deference to Hon'ble Court's directive, the government has decided not to depute the election observer.

'In the present situation with two recognised National Sports Federations (NSF) for hockey, only one of which, namely HI, enjoying the required support of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), the government will comply with the directions of the court to obtain the cooperation of IHF and IOA and any other body that may have been set up to resolve the matter in the best interests of hockey in the country.'

The government also pulled up HI, saying it has taken note during the scrutiny of nominations for its election, that it was not bound by government guidelines relating to age and tenure limits.

'The government is of the view that every NSF is fully bound by the guidelines for it to function as an NSF and perform the public functions of selecting the national team and deputing it for participation in international competitions.'

The HI election has been postponed thrice before.

New Delhi, July 27 (PTI) Lalit Modi''s attorney Mehmood Abdi today said they would push for a neutral Supreme Court judge on the BCCI''s disciplinary panel, probing into the alleged financial irregularities by the suspended IPL Chairman in the running of the T20 event. "A neutral Supreme Court judge must be there in the committee. We have grave concern about the BCCI''s stance. If they have already decided then what''s the point in all their meetings? Whosoever is doing this is hurting BCCI''s cause more," Abdi said before going into he BCCI''s disciplinary committee meeting here. Talking abut the meeting agenda, Abdi said, "We have two points to discuss today. First to get the documents which we have asked from the BCCI and the second issue is of recusal of some members from the disciplinary committee. It will be decided today." Modi is seeking the recusal of interim IPL chief Chirayu Amin and BCCI vice-President Arun Jaitley from the panel. "The preliminary issue is of supply of the documents. HI goes for polls tomorrow, govt withdraws observer

Tue, Jul 27 10 08:22 PM

New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) After three postponements and an acrimonious run-up marked by mudslinging from both the camps, Hockey India goes for its much-awaited polls here tomorrow with a question mark over its legality. But on the eve of the elections, there was much drama and confusion with the Delhi High Court declaring that the erstwhile KPS Gill-led Indian Hockey Federation was the only recognised federation for the game in the country and HI is a private body. The court directive prompted the Sports Ministry to withdraw its observer SK Mendiratta from the elections but HI officials made it clear that they would go ahead with the polls irrespective of the court order. Hockey India, which has the recognition of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), has to complete its election process by the world body stipulated deadline of July 31, failing which India would be barred from participating in international tournaments. After intense discussions, HI officials decided late in the evening to go ahead with the elections which will see 83-year-old Vidya Stokes and former India captain Pargat Singh contesting for the post of president. "As scheduled we will be conducting our elections tomorrow. All the state federations officials have already arrived here and as directed by the High Court''s order we have given them the clarification on HI''s status," an HI official said. "The government has withdrawn its observer but FIH observer Antonio von Ondarza has already arrived for the polls," the official added. Abiding by the High Court''s directive, the Sports Ministry withdrew its observer for HI elections. In a letter, the ministry stated that it decided to withdraw its observer, Mendiratta from the poll process on the instruction of the High Court, which today said IHF was the solely representative of the national game in the country and HI was a private body. "The government election observer''s presence at the Annual General Meeting of HI, which is scheduled to be held tomorrow, does not in any manner reflect government''s endorsement of the election process or its outcome. However, in deference to Honourable High Court''s directives, the government has decided not to depute the government election observer to oversee the elections," the letter signed by Joint Secretary Injeti Srinivas said. .

Non-compliance on age, tenure limitations will lead to fund cuts: Gill to federations

Published>Tue, Jul 27 10 08:08 PM

New Delhi, July 27 (ANI): Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs M.S. Gill has warned sports federations that the government will cut off funding to them if they refuse to comply with controversial age and tenure limitations.

Gill was quoted by a news agency as saying that more than a third of the 68 associations are yet to incorporate the new regulations.

"The government is not satisfied with the functioning of the (federations) because none of them have fully complied with the good governance practices prescribed by the government in the guidelines," Gill was quoted, as saying.

"A recent study undertaken by the government shows that most of the (federations) are not having proper election bye-laws that can ensure fair and transparent elections," he added.

Ministry guidelines require that the president of any federation, including the Indian Olympic Association, should not be in office for more than three terms. An age limit for all office-bearers is set at not more than 70.

The IOA and the federations have rejected the guidelines, seeing them as an assault on their autonomy.

The IOC had warned India in May of potential sanctions over government interference in the running of sports federations. (ANI)

Sangakkara, Jaywardene frustrate India

Published>Tue, Jul 27 10 07:48 PM

Colombo, July 27 (IANS) Skipper Kumar Sangakkara smashed his seventh double ton and Mahela Jayawardene notched up his 28th century as Sri Lanka ended the second day's play with a massive first innings lead of 547 runs against India in the second cricket Test here Tuesday.

Sangakkara (219) and Jayawardene (174) stitched a 193-run third-wicket stand to enable Sri Lanka declare their first innings at 624 for four shortly after tea at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground. Thilan Samaraweera made an unbeaten 76.

India also made a strong start with openers Virender Sehwag (64) and Murali Vijay (22) seeing the last 18 overs of the day by scoring 95 runs.

For Sangakkara it was his seventh double ton, and he surpassed Marvan Atapattu's six and now has the most double hundreds in his country. Sangakkara's double-century put him at par with Wally Hammond of England. Only Australian legend Don Bradman (12) and West Indian Brian Lara (9) have more scores of 200 or more.

Jayawardene also reached a personal milestone as his century at this ground was his 10th three-figure knock at the same venue, the most by a batsman at a single ground, surpassing Bradman's tally of nine at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Jayawardene and Sangakkara, who have Test cricket's highest partnership of 624 runs at the same venue against South Africa four years ago, batted in an aggressive fashion as the Indian bowlers' suffering continued for the second straight day.

Jayawardene hit 20 boundaries and a six in his 28th Test hundred, building Sri Lanka's advantage on the lifeless wicket.

Sangakkara started the proceedings by hitting Abhimanyu Mithun for a crisp boundary through mid-off and then flicked the next ball through the midwicket for another four.

Sangakkara again smashed Mithun for three successive boundaries in his third over, which helped him surpass the 150-run mark.

Jayawardene also freed his arms with a couple of boundaries off Ishant Sharma and lifted left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha for a four over mid-on to bring up the 100-run partnership for the third wicket.

Ojha found himself at the receiving end of Sangakkara's blade as the Sri Lankan captain hit four boundaries in five balls to move on to 199. In the next over, Sangakkara's square drive, well clear of the slip fielder, off Harabhajan raced towards the boundary to bring up his well-deserved double hundred.

Sangakkara, who was on 214 at lunch, fell in the fourth over after the break when he edged a lazy drive off part-time spinner Virender Sehwag to Rahul Dravid at lone slip. The left-handed batsman hit 29 boundaries in his seven-hour stay.

Jayawardene and Samaraweera added another 176 runs for the fourth wicket as Sri Lanka posted a huge score. Harbhajan picked up the second wicket of the day by dismissing Jayawardene prompting Sangakkara to declare the innings.
