Unfair to expect miracles from young Pak team: Yousuf

Deepak Jain Sat, Jan 16 10 01:24 PM

Karachi, Jan 16 (PTI) Embattled captain Mohammad Yousuf believes it is unfair to expect miracle results in Test cricket from an inexperienced and young Pakistan team. The News quoted Yousuf as saying from Hobart that people had wrong expectations from the team and must face the reality now. Yousuf on his first assignment as skipper lead Pakistan to a drawn Test series in New Zealand last year. However, his side has already lost the ongoing three-match Test series against Australia. "If you expect something of this side, then maybe that is a wrong expectation. You have to see where we are playing, which team we are playing. You should keep that in mind. Our team doesn''t have many world class players. Most of the batsmen average below 30. Then how can you expect them to come here and beat top teams like Australia," Yousuf was quoted as saying in the report. .

Bangladesh an 'ordinary' test side, says Sehwag

Virender Sehwag plays with a soccer ball during a cricket training session in New Delhi...

Deepak Jain Sat, Jan 16 10 01:20 PM

Bangladesh can produce upsets in one-day cricket but they are an ordinary test side that are unlikely to trouble India, said the tourists' vice captain Virender Sehwag.

India, the world's top ranked test side, face Bangladesh in a two-test series, the first of which starts in Chittagong on Sunday. Sehwag could not see the hosts springing a surprise victory over India.

"I don't think so. In one-day (cricket) they can surprise anybody but not in test matches. It's an ordinary side," Sehwag said at a news conference ahead of first test.

"It's difficult for Bangladesh to take 20 Indian wickets. The kind of batting line up we have, I don't think so. Even Sri Lanka can't do that. So it's very very difficult for Bangladesh."

Bangladesh have won only three of their 61 tests, drawing six matches and losing 52 since they gained test status in June 2000.

They have lost all but one of their previous test matches against India. The only time India failed to win was a rain-forced draw in Chittagong in May 2007.

The tourists climbed to the top of the test rankings for the first time in December after winning a three-test series against Sri Lanka 2-0.

India are scheduled to play only four test matches in 11 months, which means their stay at the top of the rankings could be a short one.

Sehwag said the team were focused on the test match, not their world ranking.

"We are not thinking that we are number one, number two or number three," he added. "We have to play well, we have to give our individual performances and our job is to play well."

Injured Tanvir hopeful of playing in IPL III

Deepak Jain Sat, Jan 16 10 12:54 PM

Karachi, Jan 16 (PTI) He was an instant hit in the inaugural IPL, but Pakistan all-rounder Sohail Tanvir''s participation in third edition of the cash-rich event is still uncertain as he is fighting hard to recover in time from a knee injury that ruled him out of the ODI series Down Under. Tanvir, playing for Rajasthan Royals, was the player-of-the-tournament in in the first edition of Indian Premier League in 2008 and is hopeful of regaining his fitness before the lucrative Twenty20 tournament begins on March 12. "I have a knee ligament problem that I have had before and it has not healed sufficiently to make myself available for the ongoing tour of Australia," he said. Tanvir said he was disappointed to miss out on the chance to play the ODI in Australia as he has not played for Pakistan for a while now. He said he had picked up the knee problem while doing fielding drills at the National Cricket Academy but hoped he would be fit in time for the IPL season. The IPL has allowed nine Pakistan players, including Tanvir, Kamran Akmal, Misbah-ul-Haq to feature in the players auction on January 19. .

McEnroe tips Andy Murray to win Australian Open

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 16 10 12:40 PM

Melbourne, Jan 16 (ANI): Tennis legend John McEnroe, who was present at the Australian Open men's draw, has picked Andy Murray to win the grand slam tournament this year.

McEnroe opted for Murray, a player yet to prove he has the mettle to succeed at the grand slam level.

"I think it is his (Murray's) time. Each time he doesn't (win a major), the pressure sort of builds, but hardcourts are his favourite surface," McEnroe said.

"He laid an egg in the (2009 US) Open when he lost to (Marin) Cilic; it was not a good effort.

Cilic played well, but it was really surprising. But to me, (the Australian Open) is there for the taking because there are questions about some of the other guys," The Australian quoted him, as saying.

Commenting on Roger Federer's chances, McEnroe said: "He's amazing, obviously. The guy is to me the greatest player that ever lived. "There's nowhere to go but down in a way because he's already broken every record and it seems at some stage you have to level off.

"I was so amazed that after losing here last year in the finals, that he was able to rebound and win the French for the first time, and then break the (grand slam titles) record at Wimbledon. If you look at his record, it's going to be pretty hard to say that Roger Federer won't at least get to the semis." (ANI)

Good wickets make for keen contests

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 16 10 12:34 PM

India, Jan. 15 -- The more close contests one sees spread over five days, the more one gets convinced that cricket was not meant to be a game of limited overs. In the surfeit of cricket which we were witness to this week, what grabbed attention was not India's meaningless and eventually unsuccessful forays in Bangladesh, but a riveting contest at home meant only for domestic audiences. One-day cricket is a contrived format, put together after trifling with the laws to create a sequence of moments which are, no doubt, thrilling to watch. But the compromise it has to make with the skills of the game is too great a price to pay, especially if the longer version of the game, because of its neglect, is going to become defunct. India's ascent to number one spot and the euphoria that success generated has had its positive fall-out, with two Test matches being specially scheduled to cater to the demand of the players and the much-maligned "purists". We are looking forward to South Africa's visit to India next month and hoping that India prepare pitches that give both bowlers and batsmen an equal chance to showcase their abilities. Nothing kills a game of cricket more than wickets where you can bat even blindfolded and yet feel unlucky if you score anything less than a hundred. India has been guilty on more counts than one in pushing Test cricket to the margins and it has not only to do with its greed. Its indifference to the longer version of the game gets reflected in the nature of the benign tracks it produces, which lead to either futile draws or completely one-sided contests, both in their very nature boring to watch. Sure, create conditions to suit the home team but not to the extent that it takes away from a good contest. The Ranji final provided that ideal pitch and as a consequence a perfect match, which engaged the huge number of spectators, the TV audiences and the two teams with an intensity a person may reserve only for the final day of his life. The medium pacers played a pivotal role in shaping this contest, the fielders were an admirable support cast, and one man despite ending a loser, stole the thunder from the winners. At only 20 years of age Manish Pandey's outstanding athletic ability in the field, typified by that Superman like dive after a steaming run to pluck the ball in the air is understandable.

It is obviously to do with a lot of hard work acting as a stimulus for an exceptional talent which helped him to overcome these challenging conditions. These challenges are now going to multiply and hopefully this young lad will not get distracted and lose his way in the glamour world awaiting him.

National Stadium 95% complete

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 16 10 12:24 PM

Mumbai, Jan. 15 -- The Indian hockey team will have to wait till the end of January to know when it will be able to start training at the National Stadium, the venue for the World Cup starting on February 28. Indian chief coach, Jose Brasa, wants his boys to reach New Delhi as soon as possible so as to make up for their lack of match practice before the mega event by playing some warm-up games at the World Cup venue. But before that, he would also like the team to have some training sessions at the National Stadium to get acclimatised to the conditions, especially under the lights. However, the stadium is only "95 per cent complete", according to a senior Sports Ministry official as of Friday and it will take at least a couple of weeks to finish the remaining work. "The stadium work is 95 per cent complete and only minor work remains to be finished. The turf is ready and the lighting is in place," said Hardip Singh Kingra, joint secretary in the Ministry of Sports.

Spain's Fernando Verdasco issued a warning to his rivals ahead of the Australian Open with a 7-5 6-3 win over Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the Kooyong Classic final on Saturday.

World number nine Verdasco broke the 10th-ranked Frenchman late to clinch a hard-fought first set, then broke him twice more to race to a 4-0 lead in the second under bright sunshine at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club.

Tsonga broke back to rally to 5-3, but struggled with unforced errors and was unable to reel in the Spaniard, whose powerful baseline game was on song throughout the tournament.

Owen will get more first-team opportunities: Ferguson

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 16 10 12:10 PM

London, Jan 16(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said that striker Michael Owen will get more first-team opportunities in the coming weeks.

Owen has started just one game for United since scoring a Champions League hat-trick against Wolfsburg on December 8, and has not been called from the bench in any of the club's last three Premier League games.

"I haven't used Michael for the last two or three games, but he needs the games and we are going to try and solve that problem because his training performances are still very good. I have no problems with him - it is just the blend of your strikers. Sometimes playing with one striker, like against Birmingham last Saturday, suits us with the strength we have in midfield,' The Telegraph quoted Ferguson, as saying. So, it's a matter of choice at the moment, but Michael is not out of the equation at all. He will come into it. We like to see Rooney through the middle, though, and I think his goalscoring form has been excellent this season," he added.

Ferguson further said that Owen is one of the best forwards available in the country.

"Michael is a last defender player. There is no one better at that, his movement and positional sense is excellent, so it is a difficult choice to play two through the middle in the modern-day game," Ferguson said.

"I think there will be times when we change the pattern of the team, though. Wayne can't play every game anyway and, if you want to retain his freshness for the important games ahead, then you sometimes need to make changes," he added. (ANI)

Cue sports need image makeover: Pankaj Advani

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 16 10 12:04 PM

Charming cueist Pankaj Advani reckons cue sport desperately needs an image makeover and it's time to bid goodbye to the traditional bow tie dress code.

"Cue sports need to attract more eye-balls," the ace cueist said.

The first logical step should be a change in the dress code -- from very formal to more dapper, casual and funky, says Advani, only the second cueist, after Malta's Paul Mifsud, to have won both the billiards and snooker world titles.

"While the waistcoat can remain, the bow tie definitely needs to be given a go-by. The waistcoat can be funky and we can have printed shirts which are colourful and vibrant," prescribed the 24-year go-getter who is most comfortable in his jeans and T-shirt.

Cue sport also needs better marketing and visibility and like most other disciplines, all national sports federations need to take a leaf out of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's book on how to promote a game.

Advani said since he got "hooked on" to the sport when he was just six, things have changed over the last three to five years in the way people perceive a sportsperson.

Achievements of champion sportspersons are finally being noticed now, he pointed out.

"However, the understanding that a Vishwanathan Anand works as hard as a Sachin Tendulkar still needs to seep in," he quipped.

An alumnus of the Frank Anthony Public School here, Advani was an all-rounder who was not only a good student but also dabbled in sports like cricket, table tennis and basketball as well.

"I even wanted to be a pilot once. However, I continued to pursue billiards and it was only when I was in the 10th standard that I realised I can actually go international and represent my country, which I did in the World Billiards Championship in England in 1999-2000," he said.

Going down memory lane, Advani recalled with fondness his first days in Mahaveer Jain college as a student of B Com, when he was asked by Chenraj Jain, Chairman Jain Group of Institutions, not to attend classes but focus on billiards.

"He asked me when I was going to win my first world championship and I replied casually, 'Maybe in two years'. When I won it six months later, in 2003, I can still feel the warmth with which he shook my hand and said, 'Yaar Kamal ho Gaya'."

Advani was initiated into the game by his elder brother Shree but it was Arvind Savur who polished the uncut gem and the youngster paid rich tribute to his coach, calling him "a father figure, mentor, guide and the best billiards coach in the country".

An avid Michael Jackson fan, Advani loves break dance and hip-hop and enjoys breaking into a "typical Bollywood dance".

On his favourite place abroad, the ace player said he was mesmerised by the scenic beauty and vibrancy of Latvia and would love to visit it again.

One of the most decorated sportspersons of the country, Advani said he was "single and loved being single".

"I am not ready to take the plunge for another three to five years and would like somebody other than a sportsperson for a partner simply because I would hate discussing sports at home. It is important that the person has the same wave length and understands my professional demands totally", Advani said.

The reigning world professional billiards champion, who admires Peter Gilchrist for his sportsmanship and considers Mike Russell as "one of the greatest billiards players", is looking forward to the Asian Championship to be held in Indore in April and Asian Games slated for November in China.

"To be become a champion, you need to be prepared to lose. It is only when you let go that you become fearless and produce the best," was Advani's message to the budding players.

New place, new format

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 16 10 11:48 AM

Chittagong, Jan. 16 -- As the cricket caravan rolls into this port city of Bangladesh, one of the changes on view is the landscape. The sea-line is faintly visible from the media box and the blackish-green hills on the other side resemble a herd of elephants standing in the midst of a layer of smog. Also unmistakable is the smell of dried fish in the air. The hosts begin their two-Test series here on Sunday at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Sagarika, some 18 km from the heart of the city. The contest is tipped to be a mismatch, and the earnestness with which the India players practiced on Friday would have sent down shivers down their opponents. After the nets session, each batsman followed it up with a knocking session under the watchful eyes of coach Gary Kirsten. Virender Sehwag was the first at the nets while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni headed straight to the wicket and spoke at length to curator Safiul Islam Belal. The others went into a huddle and then broke up for a game of football. The senior India players were quick to get into the groove. All of them, including Sachin Tendulkar, kicked the ball around, which in the Kirsten era is fast becoming the way to warm up. Rahul Dravid and Tendulkar followed Gautam Gambhir and Sehwag into the nets. Tendulkar was circumspect against Amit Mishra but slowly gained the upper hand. V.V.S. Laxman got a feel of the conditions before going into the nets. For a while he kept the bottom hand behind him and kept flicking the ball with the left. Seeing him, Dhoni tried to copy the shot but soon gave up.

Abhinav Bindra wants to quit

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 16 10 11:44 AM

Mumbai, Jan. 16 -- One year and 158 days after he became India's first Olympic individual gold medallist, shooter Abhinav Bindra - "frustrated" by the attitude of India's shooting federation - said there might be no future in the sport for him. Bindra (27) told Hindustan Times the ways of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) - the sport's apex body in the country - and the apathy shown by others in positions of power convinced him there was "little chance of future success". I'm not saying I don't want to be accountable. I will go to international competitions and my scores there can be monitored: Bindra Bindra has been training abroad for six months for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the Asian Games in China later this year. The NRAI wants him to turn up for regular trials in India, irrespective of his international results. Bindra came back from Germany to attend one such trial in December. It was postp-oned at the last moment. He wrote to the NRAI and Sports Ministry asking that he be allowed to prepare in a manner similar to his run-up to the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Till Friday, he'd got no response. "The present situation has me very upset and does not leave me with much motivation," Bindra said. People close to the Olympic champion said he has run into rigid, illogical protocol several times. They felt he is seriously thinking about quitting if this continues.

NRAI senior vice-president Avtar Singh Sethi said: "We are going to ask the Sports Ministry to consider his international competition scores in lieu of trials. There will be a meeting in a few days." Bindra, however, has not been apprised of any such development.

"I''m in the auction, and that''s only in a few days'' time, so we''ll see how that goes," Hughes was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald. Wizards' Arenas pleads guilty in gun case

Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas, currently serving an indefinite suspension from the NBA, is trailed...

Deepak Jain>Sat, Jan 16 10 10:18 AM

Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas pleaded guilty on Friday to felony weapons possession and faces up to six months in prison under his plea deal for bringing four guns into the team's locker room.

Arenas, 28, who signed a six-year, $111 million contract in the summer of 2008, has been suspended indefinitely by the NBA over last month's incident at the Verizon Center.

Arenas, who has said the guns were unloaded, entered the guilty plea to the single felony count during a standing-room-only hearing that lasted just under 30 minutes in District of Columbia Superior Court.

The charge, carrying a pistol without a license in violation of D.C. law, carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and Judge Robert Morin told Arenas he was not necessarily bound by the plea deal.

A tentative sentencing date of March 26 was set, pending a sentencing report that could take up to eight weeks. But the lawyer for Arenas, Kenneth Wainstein, pressed for an earlier sentencing date.

Morin asked Arenas whether he understood the terms of the plea agreement and that he would be giving up certain rights under the deal. He replied softly but firmly, "Yes sir."

Wainstein and Arenas, with his head slightly bowed, left the courtroom without comment. In a statement, Wainstein said his client "accepted full responsibility for his actions, acknowledged that those actions were wrong and against the law, and has apologized to all who have been affected."

Prosecutor Chris Kavanaugh told reporters, "We are pleased with the disposition."

ARENAS' FOUR GUNS

A multi-story banner of Arenas outside the Wizards' Verizon Center home in downtown Washington was taken down after the incident and the team has removed all Arenas-related merchandise from the building's souvenir stands.

Arenas played in only 15 games over the past two years because of an injury to his left knee but returned this season to lead the Wizards in scoring.

Despite Arenas' return, the Wizards have struggled this season and at 12-25 are tied for the third-worst record in the 15-team Eastern Conference. The Wizards have lost four of five games since the NBA suspended the guard.

"Gilbert Arenas has been a cornerstone of the Washington Wizards for six years. We are deeply saddened and disappointed in his actions that have led to the events of this afternoon," the Wizards said in a statement.

"Gilbert used extremely poor judgment and is ultimately responsible for his own actions."

The three-time All Star met federal prosecutors earlier this month to explain why he took the weapons out while in the locker room. Arenas insisted in a statement last week it was a "misguided effort to play a joke on a teammate."

Kavanaugh laid out the details of the case against Arenas in court, describing that Arenas and another Wizards player, identified in news reports as Javaris Crittenton, had an argument after a card game as the team flew back to Washington from Phoenix late on Dec. 19.

They threatened to shoot each other and Arenas also said he would burn the teammate's Cadillac Escalade, Kavanaugh said.

Two days later, Arenas entered the Wizards' locker room and put four guns on a chair in front of the teammate's locker and a note that said "PICK 1." Arenas told authorities the other player showed his own weapon, but the teammate has denied it.

The firearms, which Wizards' security personnel took back to Arenas' home, included a .50-caliber gold-plated semi-automatic Desert Eagle, a .500 magnum Smith & Wesson revolver, a .45 caliber semi-automatic Kimber Eclipse, and a 9 millimeter Browning, according to the prosecutor.

Allenby defies ankle pain to share early Waialae lead

Deepak Jain Sat, Jan 16 10 09:12 AM

Australia's Robert Allenby wielded a red-hot putter and defied a painful foot for the second day in a row to grab a share of the early lead in the Sony Open second round on Friday.

The four-times PGA Tour winner, who twisted his right ankle on Monday while walking with his wife outside the players' hotel, birdied two of the last three holes at Waialae Country Club for a three-under-par 67.

Despite finding only five fairways off the tee, Allenby scrambled superbly, saving par three times from bunkers and needing only 26 putts to join American Chad Campbell (64) at the top of the leaderboard.

The pair set the tournament pace at eight-under 132, a stroke in front of American world number three Steve Stricker (67) and compatriots John Merrick (68) and Jeff Quinney (67).

Americans Shane Bertsch (68) and Troy Matteson (67) were a further shot back at six under in the first full-field event of the 2010 PGA Tour.

Allenby, bidding for his first victory on the U.S. circuit since the 2001 Pennsylvania Classic, was delighted with his short game on another breezy day of sunshine at Waialae.

"I struggled off the tee, just wasn't able to hit the shots that were required," the 38-year-old told reporters. "That makes it pretty hard to hit the greens when you are coming out of this rough, it's a bit of a guessing game.

"I was happy with the way I managed myself around the course. I relied on my short game and so far that has been really good. I've been putting really well."

TOP BALL-STRIKER

Long regarded as one of the best ball-strikers in the game, Allenby was the hottest player coming into this year, having won the Australian PGA championship and the Sun City Challenge in South Africa in successive weeks last month.

"Coming into this tournament, I was hitting the ball as good as I could possibly hit it," he said.

"I only had two weeks off over Christmas and the last two weeks I've been hitting balls and putting and chipping."

His bruised right ankle is still a problem for him, though.

"It's still the same. It's still there and it's still annoying," he said. "It just stops me from making normal swings so a lot of my swings are abbreviated.

"But I'm managing. I'm not expecting too much, just managing my way around the golf course."

Twice winner Ernie Els carded a 70 to lie seven strokes off the pace while 2005 champion Vijay Singh was at a precarious one over after battling to a 72.

The cut was projected to fall at one-over 141 with Britain's Luke Donald and double major winner John Daly of the U.S. among those in danger of missing out.

Somdev one step away from Aus Open main draw

Deepak Jain Fri, Jan 15 10 06:23 PM

Melbourne, Jan 15 (PTI) Somdev Devvarman kept the Indian hopes alive and is now just one step away from the Australian Open singles main draw after his three-set win against Germany''s Tobias Kamke here today. The 27th seed Indian overcame an indifferent start to beat his opponent 2-6 6-1 8-6 in the second round of the qualifying event. Somdev, ranked 161, will take on world number 126 and 12th seed Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia in the third and final round. Prakash Amritraj and Yuki Bhambri had also entered the qualifying event but lost in the second and first round respectively. After three failed attempts, Somdev played in his first singles Grand Slam event last year when he qualified for the US Open and reached second round of the main draw. Before that Prakash Amritraj was the last Indian to play in a Grand Slam when he entered the US Open in 2002 as a wild card entrant.

Spain favourites to win World Cup: Lothar Mathhaus

Deepak Jain>Fri, Jan 15 10 06:19 PM

Kolkata, Jan 14 (IANS) German soccer legend Lothar Mathhaus considers Spain as the favourites for the forthcoming World Cup to be held in South Africa in June.

'I saw them playing. They have excellent players, who can make a difference,' the skipper of the 1990 World Cup winning West German team told mediapersons after unveiling the World Cup trophy here Friday.

Mathhaus turned out in five consecutive World Cups for Germany between 1982 and 1998 and also holds the record for the most number of appearances in the quadrennial soccer extravaganza (25 matches).

On Germany's prospects in South Africa, the 48-year-old said: 'Germany are always a favourite in World Cups. We may not have the best of players. But they work great together. It is said if you win against Germany you can win the tournament. But it is not easy to win against Germany'.

Mathhaus, the most capped German player with 150 appearances for his country, described Argentine Lionel Messi as the best footballer in the world now.

The former German midfielder-turned-sweeper described the 1990 World Cup crown as the happiest moment in his life. 'When you get the Cup as captain it's a feeling you cannot describe'.

The saddest moment was his side German club Bayern Munich's 1-2 loss to England's Manchester United in 1998-99. Bayern led 1-0 for most part of the match, but Manchester struck twice in the last minute of injury time to win the title.

'Had we concentrated till the last second, Manchester would not have won,' said Mathhaus, who first ever FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991.

Wiser after the disappointing experience, Mathhaus urged footballers never to be sure till the final whistle. 'Never give up a match, never be sure till the last second'.

Asekd why Germany has not found any more Mathhaus over the past eight years, he said: 'You can't create clones of players like me, Brazilian Ronaldo or Pele, or Agentine Maradona. Had Brazil got clones of Pele every five years, nobody could have beaten them'.

At the same time, Mathhaus felt the rise of new stars in Germany was a problem as players were not allowed to play their own style of football. 'It's the system which matters. But having said that one cannot overlook the Germans' winning mentality.'

Spain Lothar Matthaeus''s favourite in World Cup

Deepak Jain Fri, Jan 15 10 06:09 PM

Kolkata, Jan 15 (PTI) German football great Lothar Matthaeus today picked Spain ahead of much-fancied Brazil and Argentina as his favourite team to win the FIFA World Cup to be held in South Africa from June 11 to July 11. Unveiling the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour in its first stop at Kolkata, Matthaeus said, "Spain have excellent players in their ranks. They have everything in them and players who can make a difference." The former West Germany captain, who led the side to beat Diego Maradona''s Argentina and win the 1990 World Cup, described the Argentine great as the best footballer ever. Recalling his rivalry with Maradona, Matthaeus said: "I have not seen any better player than Maradona. It was always great to play against Argentina. Whenever I played against him, I was in full concentration. He was fast but I was faster to catch him and hold him." Maradona had described the German midfielder and sweeper as his "best rival" and Matthaeus reciprocated the gesture saying they had mutual respect for each other. "I had played against him for the first time in a friendly in 1982. He was a fantastic player. We had mutual respect for each other apart from the fact that we were rivals on the field. He respected the fact that I did not hurt his legs while tackling him," said the 48-year-old former star. More PTI TAP NN AT

Deepak Jain Fri, Jan 15 10 05:59 PM

Hayden, who represents Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, said he never had problems in India and the country meant a lot for him and his family. "I can say that I have been welcomed in all parts of India as a brother and friend of the country, which is a great privilege and I''m humble about it. Over a long period of time, I acknowledge, what India meant to me, individually and to my family as well. I''m looking forward with great confidence to playing in IPL," the towering Australian said. "In every tour, generally what happens that it is in player''s discretion to decide whether he wants to play or pull out because of personal reasons or other reasons. Federer says he'll be fit for Australian Open

Deepak Jain Fri, Jan 15 10 05:55 PM

Melbourne, Jan. 15 -- Roger Federer has assured that he will be ready to chase another Australian Open title after three-hour training sessions this week at Melbourne Park. The world number one, who arrived on Tuesday in Australia after losing last week in a Doha semi-final to Nikolay Davydenko, has been hitting the practice courts hard. Federer said his decision to bypass the AAMI Classic at Kooyong club, his usual warm-up event, was made for personal rather than fitness reasons. "This year is very different," he said while making an appearance for a chocolate sponsor before Monday's start of the Grand Slam. The right forearm that troubled him last week in a loss to Davydenko will not be an issue, Federer said, as he begins the quest for a fourth title at Melbourne Park. "When I came here, I wanted to enjoy the family, settle into Melbourne and then see where it takes us," he said. "I've had a couple of hits. It's been good weather." The 15-time Grand Slam champion said: "It was a precaution. I've played quite a bit of tennis already. I played six matches in eight days in the Middle East.

Massa fights to banish demons of 2008 title defeat

A file photo of Ferrari Formula One driver Felipe Massa of Brazil during a press...

Deepak Jain>Fri, Jan 15 10 03:19 PM

Ferrari's Felipe Massa has encountered more difficulty coming to terms with his agonising championship loss in 2008 than his recovery from a life-threatening accident that curtailed last year's campaign.

The Brazilian, who suffered substantial a head injury during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix last July, also had a painful experience a year before when he lost to the Formula One world title to Lewis Hamilton by a single point.

As if losing the title on the final bend of the final race was not bad enough, the revelation that the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix was fixed compounds his misery as the result potentially cost Massa the crown.

"Physically I now feel better than I did before the accident," he told reporters at a pre-season ski retreat ahead of the season opener in Bahrain on March 14.

"The accident hasn't changed my life, hasn't changed the way I think or work."

Massa initially did not realise how serious his injury was.

"I was sure after the accident when I was in hospital in Hungary that I was in a position not to miss any races," he said. "I once almost fought with my wife because she said I wouldn't race in Valencia (four weeks after Hungary)."

Massa has moved on from the accident but if he wanted to forget Singapore 2008, two recent events have revived the memory.

SCHUMACHER RETURN

Former Renault boss Flavio Briatore was found guilty by the FIA of ordering Nelson Piquet to crash, letting Fernando Alonso win and stopping Massa maybe gaining key points for the title.

This month, Briatore's life ban was overturned by a Paris court but Massa is still wondering if the 2008 standings could not have been amended after last year's expose of the affair.

"Honestly, if you see something that's not right in sport and done in a way which is against the rules, I don't think it would be difficult to change the result even if it would not be great for the sport," Massa said.

"But everybody knows what happened in 2008, we are not going to win anything looking back."

Another reminder of the scandal is Alonso becoming Massa's new Ferrari team mate. However, the Brazilian believes Alonso's statement that he knew nothing about the incident while a 2007 spat in Germany after a fractious race has been forgotten.

"We had a discussion in 2007 in Germany. Afterwards he said sorry and the thing passed. I have no problems with Fernando," Massa said, adding there was an immediate difference between the Spaniard and previous team mate Kimi Raikkonen.

"I've already spoken more with Fernando than I did in three years with Kimi," giggled Massa, who recently became a father.

Another former team mate, seven-times world champion Micheal Schumacher, has surprised pundits by coming out of retirement and leaving his Ferrari consultancy role to race for Mercedes.

"Michael was happier racing than he was when he quit. It's hard to say if he has done the right thing. He could be competitive immediately or it may take time for him to be where he was but it's interesting for the sport," Massa said.

"If I was in his place perhaps I would have gone in a similar direction. Sure it's quite strange to see him racing for another team but it's also true Ferrari already had two drivers.

"Of course Micheal is a friend, Away from races, the friendship will continue."

Sporting eye season''s first win against Churchill

Deepak Jain Fri, Jan 15 10 03:09 PM

Panaji, Jan 15 (PTI) Sporting Clube de Goa will strive to taste their first win in this year''s ONGC I-League football tournament when they take on defending champion Churchill Brothers in a 10th-round match at the Nehru Stadium in Margao tomorrow. Sporting are lying at the bottom of the tally with four points and yet to win a match. They played with vigour against Mahindra United and had a good chance to script their first win after taking lead at the first half, but later allowed Mahindra to score two goals in the last quarter of the match. Churchill, with three regular defenders -- Thokchom Naoba Singh, Robert Lalthlamuana and Rowilson will not play tomorrow due to injury, roles of junior duo -- Obagbemiro and Nathaniel Amos are going to be important. Batting pitch for India-Bangladesh first Test

Deepak Jain Fri, Jan 15 10 02:59 PM

Chittagong, Jan 15 (PTI) A batting-friendly track, which is also expected to assist spinners, awaits India and Bangladesh in the first Test of their two-match series starting here on Sunday. The pitch at Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Cricket Stadium, which has a tinge of grass on it, has been kept covered to protect it from the sun as the mercury here at the port city of Bangladesh is rising. Pitch curator Bilal Hussain said whichever side wins the toss should opt to bat first and put up a huge score so that their spinners can get assistance later. "It is a sporting pitch and will have something for the batsmen and the bowlers. The team which bats first can pile on runs, may be 500-600 especially India since they have a strong batting line up," he told PTI. The last time India played a Test here was in May 2007 under Rahul Dravid and the it ended in a draw due to rain interruptions. That was the only match to end as a draw out of the six, the venue has hosted since 2006. "This time it will have a result," he said. The outfield is hard and dry with little grass and the pitch is expected to be watered today and tomorrow. India coach Gary Kirsten and players, including Harbhajan Singh and VVS Laxman, also had a look at the track before the team practice in the afternoon.

Deepak Jain Fri, Jan 15 10 02:49 PM

New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI) The hurriedly-arranged Test series between India and South Africa will start on February 6 in Nagpur, the BCCI announced today. India will play two Tests against South Africa and after the opener in Nagpur, the teams will take a three-day break before playing the second match of the series in Kolkata from February 14.
