Happy to take RCB to semis after Mumbai debacle: Kohli

Wed, Sep 22 10 02:27 AM

Johannesburg, Sep 21 (PTI) The last-over heartbreak against Mumbai Indians in the previous match still fresh in his mind, Bangalore Royal Challengers batsman Virat Kohli said he was happy that he could take his team to the semifinals of the Champions League here today. In their last tie against Mumbai Indians, Kohli, despite hitting two fours in the last over, couldn''t take his team home as they fell short by just two runs. However, in their do-or-die match today, the Delhi batsman blasted a couple of sixes and a four in the 17th over to help his team overhaul the 160-run target and beat Lions to seal a place in the semis. "Really happy to be there till the end, and the team won. I was really disappointed that I couldn''t finish it off in the last game despite taking it to the last ball. Happy to do it this time," said Kohli, who scored an unbeaten 49, said. "T20 games turn in one over. I was waiting for it, and it came in the 17th over. I messed up with Uthappa''s run out and apologised to him. He is a good friend, doesn''t mind that," he added. RCB skipper Anil Kumble praised Kohli and said he had full faith on the young batsman. "As long as wickets were there, and Virat was in with Whitey, we knew it was about one good over," he said. "Virat also bowled well and his spell was critical. Virat and my spell at the middle overs was crucial. Dillon and Steyn also bowled really well in the end. "I was disappointed with my performance in the previous game. But no better time to step up than in the next game. Nice to go back to Durban. Hope Chennai makes it there," he said. His counterpart Alviro Petersen, however, backed his team and said they put up a good fight. "We fought all the way and played as a team. Our success should not be measured by where we finished, but by the obstacles we crossed. We were about 20 runs short. Kumble tied us up a bit. The best team won - all the best to Bangalore for the semis," he said.

FACTBOX - Commonwealth teams' reaction to setbacks

Wed, Sep 22 10 02:23 AM

Leading Commonwealth countries explained their positions on Tuesday following the latest setbacks in preparations for next month's Games in India.

ENGLAND

"We asked the Commonwealth Games federation to ensure that all of the building safety certificates were in place and we were given that reassurance...an incident like this makes us question the integrity and so we now need to have some more reassurance. We need some clarity on exactly what has happened but also that those building safety certificates are credible across all the 17 venues plus all of the training venues," England Chef de Mission Craig Hunter told Sky.

"I think the honest answer is at this point is no (the Indian government are not doing enough). We are basically running out of time to get our accommodation in a state where we can welcome athletes on Friday.

"It's a fantastic village and has the real potential to be the best ever...the training venues are superb, the dining room is great...we knew there were lots of challenges, showers not working and all of that, but we believed that could all be turned around.

"We remain optimistic, the great test will be when the first of our athletes arrive. I'm eternally optimistic at this point in time (that the Games will go ahead)."

CANADA

"We're working hour by hour in contact with our ground crew, with the organising committee. We're working closely to ensure we get the things needed to be done to allow our athletes to move into the village over the next little while," Martha Deacon, Chef de Mission for Team Canada, told Reuters.

"We are not on the path to pulling out of the Games but trying to move forward and make sure that on our on the ground crew is able to get done what needs to be done for the village to be acceptable.

"There are other significant issues but we're confident in our security team, our security measures and our planning. Right now our number one priority is that our athletes are healthy and safe and we want to make sure that is the case upon arrival. The village is the number one priority right now.

SOUTH AFRICA

"We do have concerns," Tubby Reddy, chief executive of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc), told Reuters.

"We had a team comprising our Chef de Mission, the team doctor and an intelligence expert from the government visit Delhi but they have only recently returned, within the last five days, and we are awaiting their report.

"We are looking at taking our team to India and want to make sure that we take the necessary precautions as regards security and the health of our athletes."

"The athletes village is not in the best possible state in that the areas surrounding the village have not been completed which has resulted in pools of water forming which obviously pose a health risk," he added.

AUSTRALIA

"We have held the position all along that it is the individual athlete's prerogative as to whether or not they wish to travel to Delhi and participate in the 2010 Commonwealth Games," Australian Commonwealth Games Association chief executive Perry Crosswhite said.

"It is a very personal decision and one which athletes must make in consultation with their family and individual support teams."

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand's team said the Games' security was acceptable but had shifted their athletes to another building after finding their accommodation substandard.

"While cleanliness had been a concern for us, further inspection revealed some issues with plumbing, wiring, internet access and mobile phone coverage. We will now be advising sports that the accommodation is less than expected," Chef de Mission Dave Currie said in a statement.

"While our new tower may be close to being ready, there are large sections of the village that are not yet ready for athlete arrival."

PAKISTAN

President of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Arif Hasan said that senior police official Ahmed Mukarram would go to the Indian capital on Sept. 26 for an inspection visit.

"Although we have been assured by the CWG organising committee that our athletes would be provided top level security and off good arrangements at the athletics village but we have our areas of concern," Hasan said.

He said media reports about the security issues and lack of facilities at the village had bothered the POA.

"Our contingent is due to leave on Sept. 29 but before that we want to get a briefing from the security officer as well," he said.

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

"The concern surrounding India and Delhi is not unusual," Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association secretary-general Brian Lewis told Reuters.

"It is always noticeable when a first world nation considers a country as a third world, there is significant focus on the negative and questions on the capacity of a so-called third world country to successfully host a game."

JAMAICA

"We are not so concerned about the state of readiness," said Warren Blake, vice-president of the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association.

"We have gone to Games before, not only in Third World countries, where weeks before the event people were concerned about the state of readiness and when the Games began everything was in place. When we went to Athens (2004 Olympic Games), people were still putting the finishing touches on the venue.

"The Jamaica team will be going. The team has been selected and everything is alright from our standpoint."

TIMELINE - Controversies involving Pakistan team

Wed, Sep 22 10 01:37 AM

The Pakistan cricket team have been hit by a series of setbacks and controversies over the past five years.

On the eve of the final one-dayer in their troubled tour of England, following is a timeline of events.

* August 2006: England are awarded the fourth and final test of their home series against Pakistan at the Oval after the tourists forfeit the match following a ball-tampering row. Pakistan refused to return to the field for the final session of the fourth day after umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove imposed a five-run penalty against them for altering the state of the ball.

Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq is cleared of ball tampering by the International Cricket Council (ICC) but is banned for four one-day internationals for bringing the game into disrepute.

* October 2006: On the eve of their opening match, Pakistan send home fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif from the Champions Trophy in India after the pair test positive for the banned steroid nandrolone. Shoaib is handed a two-year ban by a PCB tribunal, which also suspends Asif for 12 months. The bans are subsequently scrapped after both players appeal the punishment.

* March 2007: Pakistan crash out in the first round of the World Cup in West Indies following a stunning defeat by debutants Ireland. Less than 24 hours later Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer dies aged 58 after being found unconscious in his hotel room. Jamaican police launch murder inquiry into Woolmer's death, saying the Englishman was strangled amid growing speculation that he was the victim of a "betting mafia". However, later in the year a jury in Jamaica recorded an open verdict on Woolmer's death after deciding there was insufficient evidence of either a criminal act or natural causes.

* March 2009: Gunmen attack a bus carrying Sri Lanka's cricket team outside a Lahore stadium in Pakistan, killing seven people, including six policemen and a driver. Six of the team and a British coach are wounded.

* April 2009: Pakistan lose the right to host any of the 2011 50-over World Cup games scheduled for the Indian sub-continent after the ICC board decides to shift the matches out of the country because of security concerns following the Lahore attack.

* August 2010: Pakistan cricket is hit by allegations of spot-fixing after a newspaper report revealed players had been bribed to bowl pre-determined no-balls in the fourth test against England. British police questioned test captain Salman Butt and pace bowlers Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Wahab Riaz as part of the investigation. Butt, Amir and Asif were suspended from all cricket by ICC.

* September 2010: The ICC says it is investigating Pakistan's role in the third one-dayer against England for suspicious "scoring patterns". The news sparks angry reaction from PCB chief Ijaz Butt as Pakistan had won the match. A war of words breaks out after Butt told a television channel: "There is loud and clear talk in bookies' circles that some English players were paid enormous amounts of money to lose (the third one-day) match." The England and Wales Cricket Board reacts angrily and threatens legal action.

Portugal appoint Bento as coach, says federation

Wed, Sep 22 10 01:33 AM

Paulo Bento has been appointed as Portugal's national coach to replace Carlos Queiroz, who was sacked earlier this month, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said on Tuesday.

"Paulo Bento and the rest of the technical staff have signed a contract valid until July 2012," the FPF said in a statement.

The FPF will hold a news conference on Wednesday to officially unveil the new team.

Former Portugal international Bento, 41, coached Sporting for four seasons before resigning last year. His first game in charge will be a Euro 2012 qualifier on Oct. 8 against Denmark, with the side needing a win to keep their qualification hopes alive after a dismal start.

Queiroz was sacked in the wake of his six-month suspension for insulting Portuguese anti-doping agents before the World Cup.

4 Pak players clear random dope tests

Wed, Sep 22 10 01:07 AM

Karachi, Sep 21 (PTI) Four Pakistan players including captain, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Kamran Akmal and Mohammed Yousuf, currently touring England have cleared their respective dope tests conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). WADA carried out the dope tests, after the third ODI as part of its new anti-doping policy in international cricket. The four seniors cricketers were picked for the random dope tests but assistant manager, Shafqat Rana said all four had cleared the tests. "It is a great sigh of relief for us that the players cleared the tests and now they can focus on the cricket itself," he said. The dope tests were conducted at a time when the Pakistan team was already struggling with spot-fixing allegations against some of its players. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended Test captain Salman Butt and pace bowlers, Mohammed Aamer and Mohammed Asif over the allegations. After Pakistan won the third ODI at the Oval last week, the ICC said it was also investigating the match after getting creditable reports there had been spot fixing in the match. The ICC statement triggered off an unusual outburst from Ijaz Butt who in a counter attack alleged the England players were involved in fixing and a winning team didn''t fix matches. His statement has soured relations between the two boards with England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Tuesday that Pakistan will no longer be allowed to use its grounds as neutral venues in future.

Butt''s statement will not affect relations: Hasan

Wed, Sep 22 10 12:27 AM

Karachi, Sep 21 (PTI) Wajid Shamsul Hasan, Pakistan''s High Commissioner to UK, feels that PCB chief Ijaz Butt''s statement against England cricketers will have no bearing on the relationship between the two countries. Terming Butts remark as "innocent", Hasan said, "I don''t think what Butt has said will spoil our good relations. The relations between the two boards are very good." The High Commissioner said that irrespective of the results, there are fixing allegations against Pakistan players. "It makes you wonder, but our stance is clear. Until the allegations are proven our players are innocent and there is nothing wrong with that. Every country will do that for its sportsmen," Hasan, who congratulated the team on its victory in the fourth one-dayer at Lord''s, said. Tensions between the two cricket boards grew after Butt accused the English players of match fixing. Butt''s inflammatory statement against England came after the ICC had launched an investigation into the Oval one-dayer after an English tabloid raised doubts on the scoring patters during the match. Meanwhile, coach Waqar Younis felt that the win in the fourth one-dayer was a befitting reply to those accusing the team of spot fixing. "Our players are hurt by these allegations and they are also very damaging for the country," Younis said. "But the good thing is that our players are focusing on the game despite the controversies. It is encouraging to see the combination of seniors and young players turning into a winning one," Younis said.

Asif''s ex-girlfriend Veena Malik receives death threats

Tue, Sep 21 10 11:53 PM

Karachi, Sep 21 (PTI) The ex-girlfriend of tainted Pakistani cricketer Muhammad Asif today claimed that she received death threats after meeting International Cricket Council officials to discuss match-fixing scandal. Veena Malik, a popular actress, model and television show host, told the British tabloid ''The Sun'' that she received a chilling warning at home after handing evidence of Asif''s dealings with an Indian bookie to the ICC Anti-corruption and Security Unit (ACSU). She also claimed that she had got a mail in which she was ordered not to talk to the media and keep her mouth shut. "I will kill you, watch what I do," she claimed the mail read. "I was also visited two weeks ago by a man who gave me a message to say someone was going to come after me - and there would be no warning. I can''t sleep at night because I fear for my life," she said. "But if I have to die, I will die. I''m not scared of threats. I warned the Pakistan Cricket Board about match-fixing eight months ago but I was ignored. Now people have to speak out," she said. Asif, 27, is one of three Pakistan players suspended and sent home amid allegations of "spot-fixing" by bowling deliberate no-balls during last month''s Fourth Test against England. Veena also said that she discovered Asif''s involvement in spot-fixing after she called a number in India that kept on appearing on his phone bills. "I thought it was some women he was in touch with. But a man answered. He claimed they were working on commercial campaigns together. Asif went to Thailand without telling me. When he returned he finally admitted he met an Indian man to set up a deal," she said. Veena also claimed in the interview that she later listened in on a telephone call as the man told Asif on the phone: "We spent a lot of money on you and you''ve made a commitment to us." She said: "They were offering Asif 25,000 pounds to play badly but he said he needed 128,000 pounds." Veena also said that players may be doing it out of fear and because they are getting threats. The actress, who dated the cricket star for nearly two years, said: "He would never mention any names, but he would say, ''I''m not the only one involved''." PTI Corr SHN

Pakistan considered not playing fourth ODI

Tue, Sep 21 10 11:43 PM

Pakistan considered not playing in the fourth one dayer after a dispute between England batsman Jonathan Trott and fast bowler Wahab Riaz in the nets, Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said on Tuesday.

Relations between the two teams have soured since allegations of spot fixing by the Pakistan team first emerged during the fourth test last month and threatened to boil over on Monday with counter claims by both sides.

While the verbal spat had been confined to administrators of the two sides, on Monday match referee Jeff Crowe was forced to intervene after Trott and Riaz exchanged angry words.

"There was talk of not going in for the toss because of the incident," Afridi told Geo News television.

"But better sense prevailed because we wanted to play the match and we want this series to end properly.

"The match referee called both players and Trott apologised for his remarks and the matter ended there as far as we are concerned."

Pakistan won the match on Monday at Lords to level the acrimonious five match series 2-2 with the final match on Wednesday.

The tour was, however, already irretrievably blighted by the suspensions of Pakistan test captain Salman Butt and team mates Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif after last month's fourth test at Lord's.

The bans followed an investigation into newspaper reports they had deliberately arranged for no-balls to be delivered during England's only innings.

Left arm pacer Riaz was also questioned by British police about the allegations but has been allowed to participate in the one-day series. The third one dayer, which Pakistan won last Friday at the Oval, is also being scrutinised by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Afridi said the allegations have spurred on the players to win the ODI series.

"This has only fuelled our ambitions to win the series. After the reports about the ICC investigating the third one-day match the Oval, we are more keen now to win this series," he said.

"It is unfortunate the way this tour has gone but right now our complete focus is on the last ODI because there is nothing more sweet than victory in these circumstances," he said.

Delhi Lt. Governor reviews status of preparedness at C'wealth Games Village

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 11:27 PM

New Delhi, Sep.21 (ANI): Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna visited Commonwealth Games Village here on Tuesday to review the status of preparedness, ahead of the mega sporting event to be held between October 3 to 14.

The Mayor of the Games Village, the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, the Cabinet Secretary, the Chief Secretary of Delhi, the Vice-Chairman, DDA and other senior officials were also present on this occasion.

While reviewing the status of preparedness at the Commonwealth Games Village, it was noted that the international zone and the dining area were completely ready and found acceptable to all the Commonwealth Games Associations.

During the past few days, certain deficiencies in the residential zone particularly pertaining to cleanliness and minor rectifications had been pointed out by some delegates of CGAs, which had been promptly attended to.

It was observed that the manpower available for cleaning and housekeeping have also been upgraded and increased and professionals in the field had been inducted.

Some of the decisions taken during the Lt. Governor's visit were that Chief Engineer (Electrical), of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), assisted by other representatives of DDA and State Government, as well as representatives of the BSES will be in full charge of ensuring uninterrupted supply of power, in the Village comprising residential and international zone.

Among other important decisions it was decided that more manpower and resources would be inducted, as required, into the cleaning and maintenance of apartments in towers.

One officer each from the Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Civil Service would be put in charge of each tower to ensure complete coordination in all operations viz. maintenance, cleaning etc. relating to that tower.

A Command and Control Centre, consisting of the Special Officers appointed by Government, Venue Administrator, Venue Security Commander, other representatives of the Organizing Committee and the Developer would coordinate all activities in all areas.

Any Additional manpower and other resources, as required, would be provided on top priority by the State Government, DDA and MCD. The requirement of such manpower and resources would be assessed and conveyed by the Command and Control Centre.

It was also decided that the Developer would immediately ensure that all maintenance and repair work, as might be required in each tower, would be carried out promptly and on a 24x7 basis.

In view of heavy rains, any requirements of dewatering in the area would be promptly carried out by the Developer with assistance from MCD as needed.

The Lieutenant Governor, Cabinet Secretary and other senior Officers in the meeting, expressed full confidence that with the above measures being implemented, the deficiencies which have been noticed would be fully and promptly addressed to the satisfaction of all arriving guests, a release issued by the Prime Minister's Office said. Britain's injured Ohuruogu out of Commonwealth Games

Tue, Sep 21 10 11:17 PM

Britain's Olympic 400 metres champion Christine Ohuruogu has pulled out of next month's Commonwealth Games due to injury, her management team said on Tuesday.

Ohuruogu, plagued by injury problems this year, suffered cramp in a training session over the weekend and decided to withdraw from the event in India as a precaution.

"I am disappointed to miss the Commonwealth Games after working so hard to get fit since my quad injury in June," the 26-year-old said in a statement.

"However, with the 2012 Olympic Games on the horizon the last thing an athlete wants to do is risk re-injury to the same muscle.

"It was very important for me to be cautious in dealing with my previous injury; although training was progressing well, intense competition over three days may prove to be more harmful than good and may compromise the long term functioning of the muscle."

New Delhi cabbies get etiquette training for CWG

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 11:07 PM

New Delhi, Sep 21 (ANI): A five-star hotel group here has organised a two-day training camp for cabbies, who will ferry tourists set to arrive India for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which kicks off on October 3.

The Hilton group has been training cabbies at various places in the city to help them learn how to greet tourists from abroad and exchange pleasantries.

At least a 100 taxi drivers who ply their vehicles from the city's airport were given training on Tuesday.

Organizers said the needs of the customers were kept in mind while devising the training module.

"When people walk away from here, at least it will get them something to think if nothing else. If they can use words such as 'please' and 'thank you', if they can look at their taxies being a little cleaner, if they can understand the mentality of the traveller that is coming in and have certain gestures to make them feel comfortable," said Neeraj Chadha, the regional General Manager of Hilton Hotel.

"Simple things like, 'the place is so far it will take you about 30 minutes, is the air conditioning ok,' just little gestures like that. And if we see the public transport system actually deliver that kind of gestures to the customer, I think we have exceeded the limits," he added.

It has been reported that during the training camps, the drivers were shown short films and public interest advertisements highlighting the inconvenience often faced by tourists when trying to locate a cab in the national capital.

Meanwhile, the participants appreciated the efforts undertaken by Hilton Hotel.

"We were shown how to welcome the guests, to be honest, not to misbehave in front of them, drop them at the correct place and take appropriate taxi charge from them," said Vijay Kumar, a taxi owner.

The government is expecting more than 15,000 tourists from abroad during the fortnight-long 2010 Games.

Some drivers said that the two-day training would have a positive impact on their career.

"It is not only about Commonwealth Games. It is about our national identity to be respectful towards our guests. It is not only about the Games," said Ashok Kumar, a driver at the airport.

Besides the huge inflow of tourists, about 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states are expected to participate in the event.

The 12-day sporting extravaganza from October 3 to 14 will be India's biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi. (ANI)

Pakistan considered not playing fourth ODI

Tue, Sep 21 10 10:33 PM

CWG Village 'filthy': Hooper

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 09:57 PM

New Delhi, Sep 21 (ANI): Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) chief executive, Mike Hooper, on Tuesday expressing disappointment over the ill preparedness of the 2010 Games Village termed it as 'filthy'.

Hooper said he hoped the condition at the Commonwealth Games Village would improve in a couple of days.

He said things have started improving, but was not sufficient enough.

"We have met on a daily basis, my colleagues around the village, and myself, on a number of occasions, have met with the organizing committee. We have emphasised the importance of addressing the issue of the condition and the cleanliness of the Games Village, which I will have to say, in many-many of hotels, am not going to pull any punches, were 'filthy' and so, uninhabitable as is being stated by Fennel," said Hooper.

"Therefore, we were given promises that this would be remedied by September 19, close business on September 19. Unfortunately worst it is fair to say there was some progress, certainly insufficient to satisfy the majority of the CGIs, who cannot be here and have representatives here," he added, while addressing the media here today.

Hooper further said all the issues have to be addressed immediately and there was no room for further delay.

"We continue to work at the highest level as we possibly can, I don't believe we can go much higher then the Cabinet of you country, to have the issue addressed and that is the best they can come up, we want everybody is the issue addressed, without further delay," said Hooper.

"So everybody when they start arriving, the athletes are arriving, they get the environment that they were promised," he added.

He said he hoped the situation would improve in a couple of days, as the Cabinet secretary was himself taking note of the situation.

"I was pleased to hear from Suresh Kalmadi directly that the cabinet secretary was at the village this morning and reviewing things for himself. So clearly, he's taken the matter extremely seriously because it is serious and hopefully we'll see some significant actions and improvements in the next two days because that must happen," said Hooper.

Hooper, however, said the Games Village had the potential to be one of the best.

"I said the village has the potential to be, I choose my words carefully, the potential to be the best kind of village we have and I stand by that, it still does. So we need get everyone focused, the deployment of the necessary resources and to get it ready for the athletes. That's what's going to happen now," noted Hooper.

Incessant rainfall hampering preparations for CWG, says Delhi CM

New Delhi, Sep 21 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday expressing concern over the delay in finishing of infrastructural projects for the 2010 Commonwealth Games said the incessant rainfall in the national capital is hampering preparations for the upcoming mega event.

Dikshit reviewed various roads and bridges around the games sites today following incessant rainfall in the city for the last three days.

"We are conducting inspections. Whatever faults there are, we will complete them by the next week. The slight rains have surely caused some disruptions because of which work has become slow but despite that, work is happening and we will complete it. Hence, we are conducting surveys," said Dikshit.

She also undertook a rapid inspection of the various spots after an under-construction foot over-bridge today collapsed outside the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, the main venue of the Commonwealth Games, injuring 23 labourers.

England captain threatens legal action against Butt

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 09:19 PM

London, Sep 21 (IANS) England cricket captain Andrew Strauss threatened legal action against Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt to clear his team's name from allegations of match-fixing.

'We are going to explore every avenue available to us to make sure our names aren't sullied in this manner. It was the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board coming out with these allegations and we as a group of players felt strongly that we should respond, given that they were directed to us,' Strauss was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.

Strauss, however was heartened that - after a bust-up between England's Jonathan Trott and Pakistan's Wahab Riaz at the nets - the fourth match was played in good spirit.

'I think both sides understood their responsibilities to put on a good, clean game of cricket. Any potential area where things might have developed, we were all very keen to calm things down very quickly. I've got to give a lot of credit to the players from both sides for doing that,' he said.

'It's just a fact of life, with a lot of emotion flying around, things can get out of hand and I'm very proud of the fact that didn't happen. I think we were all clear it was very important for cricket that this game went ahead in the right spirit,' he said.

'Both sides would say it was a difficult thing to do, but I think that's what transpired. We were very absolutely outraged by the allegations. We refute them completely and we were very disturbed that someone would come out with those allegations without any proof to back them up,' he said.

Pak manager Yawar quits in wake of fixing allegations: report

Tue, Sep 21 10 09:03 PM

London, Sep 21 (PTI) Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed has reportedly quit his job after tension built up between England and Pakistan in the last few days over the match fixing allegations which has marred the series. Saeed, however, told a television channel that he has not quit nor does he have any intentions of stepping down in the middle of the tour. Tension had been piling up between the two countries with PCB chief Ijaz Butt accusing home players for "throwing" the third ODI in lieu of money and the matter became worse when Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz and Jonathan Trott had a public scuffle at Lord''s ahead of their fourth ODI. Tabloid ''Daily Mail'' claimed Yawar''s resignation comes after Englands relationship with Pakistan deteriorated further yesterday when Jonathan Trott grabbed Wahab Riaz by the throat at Lord''s. "It also follows after Andrew Strauss had to be talked out of leading his players in a strike ahead of the fourth NatWest one-day international when Trott and Riaz clashed in the nets and had to be separated by England batting coach Graham Gooch," it said. The match-fixing scandal has led to the suspension of three Pakistan cricketers -- Test captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir -- by the ICC. The scuffle between Trott and Saeed followed the ECB''s decision to complete a tour that had lost all credibility after more accusations of corruption coming out culminating to Butt''s claim that England had "thrown" the third one-day game at The Oval. Butt''s inflammatory remarks "outraged" England captain Andrew Strauss who threatened to sue the PCB chief for his "irresponsible" remarks. England players were enraged by Butt accusation so much that they held crisis talks into the early hours of yesterday before finally agreeing to play on "through gritted teeth". PTI PDS MRM

Bridge collapse adds to Commonwealth Games woes

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 08:47 PM

A footbridge being built for the Commonwealth Games in India collapsed on Tuesday, injuring 27 people and highlighting the raft of problems that have so far blighted the event, meant to showcase the emerging global power.

Preparations for next month's Commonwealth Games, intended to be the coming out party for India the Olympics were for China, are down to the wire and the event risks descending into farce.

The shooting of two foreign visitors by suspected militants in Delhi on Sunday has combined with a dengue fever epidemic, heavy monsoon rains, delayed construction, graft scandals and traffic chaos to give the Games that sinking feeling.

Police said the collapsed bridge was just outside the main stadium, putting India's sometimes lax construction standards again in the spotlight.

Concerns over security and health forced discus world champion Dani Samuels of Australia to pull out of the Games, another blow to organisers at pains to assure participants of complete safety.

Commonwealth Games Federation president Michael Fennell said on Tuesday the two-week event, starting Oct. 3, was seriously compromised by conditions at the Games village that have "shocked the majority."

But officials remained upbeat. "I am as confident and as cool as ever about our organizing. These are all minor hiccups," Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy told reporters.

Dismal preparations have, for many, underscored the out-of-touch, slow-paced leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Congress government, raising questions how a graft-ridden, inefficient state can hope to compete with China.

The government's pro-poor voter image may suffer from tales of billions of wasted dollars. A perception of India's entrepreneurial prowess threatening Western jobs may slip if roofs leak and journalists wonder where the Wi-Fi is.

"Fingers crossed, India may pull off a miracle," said Boria Majumdar, a sports historian who has written the book 'Sellotape Legacy: Delhi and the Commonwealth Games'.

"But it will have to be a miracle. No doubt about that".

The Games village and security -- construction delays mean venues have been locked down by police only two weeks before the Games -- are the two major weakness of the Games, Majumdar said.

Some four or five accommodation towers at the Games village are still unfinished, lacking facilities such as wireless Internet, fitted toilets and plumbing. Rubble, unused masonry and discarded bricks litter the unfinished gardens.

A crude cement slope appeared to be an unplanned fix for disabled athletes requiring access to one apartment block.

The athletes' training centre was still to be fitted out. The water in the training and recreational swimming pools was dirty, with insect larvae breeding on the surface.

"There have had some delegations staying there and they have been reporting constantly about the filth in the village," Fennell told CNN-IBN TV.

Organisers say there is no question the Games will be put off, but the nightmare is that one delegation exits and that leads to an avalanche. And the problems are not receding.

With the $6 billion Games way behind schedule, there have been worries stagnant puddles in construction sites have proved breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Hundreds of Delhi residents are hospitalised in one of the worst dengue epidemics in years.

NOT ALL BAD?

With costs running 17 times more than original estimates, the government's anti-corruption watchdog identified 16 projects with suspect financing.

The insistence to hold the Games in October has led to some athletes pulling out due to conflicts with Olympic qualifiers. October also means the opening ceremony may be ruined by rains.

Triple Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt of Jamaica is the most high profile of a bunch of top athletes who have decided to skip the event.

But many venues, including the main Jawaharlal Nehru stadium have been praised as world class.

Other events like the 2004 Athens Olympics were dogged by problems but turned out fine. Beijing was hit by worries over the torch relay and Tibet protests but ended in media glory.

Some officials say foreigners do not understand how India works. Sport Minister Manohar Singh Gill said it is like an Indian wedding where chaos ends in a well-planned ceremony.

But scandals have sent shivers down the government that since the summer has effectively replaced many organisers with top civil servants, giving the Games access to more funds.

However, the Congress government was late getting involved, highlighting its slow pace in dealing with issues ranging from economic reforms to separatist violence in Kashmir.

"It's just one of so many goof-ups," said Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, a political economist. "This will not do the government any good. When you have a big bash and benefits are minimal it sharpens and widens the inequalities in India. People notice."

Australian world champion discus thrower pulls out of CWG

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 08:43 PM

Melbourne, Sep 21 (IANS) Australia's world champion discus thrower Dani Samuels has pulled out of the New Delhi Commonwealth Games, citing concerns over health and security.

Samuels' decision came after two tourists were injured in a shooting near Jama Masjid Sunday and the rampant spread of dengue fever in the Indian capital.

Also, senior New Zealand officials raised concerns over the poor state of the Games Village Tuesday.

'Dani is extremely distressed about it all,' the Australian media Tuesday quoted Samuels' manager Hayden Knowles as saying.

'The situation in Delhi has been bothering her for some time. But the events over the weekend made it real. She had prepared her whole season around winning this thing, she even knocked back some Diamond League meets because it affected her training.

'She called me last night and then met with her coach and she couldn't even bring herself to train because she felt so bad.'

She won the gold medal at the World Championships in Berlin last summer and became the first Australian to pull out over security fears.

Meanwhile, Australian Commonwealth Games officials said they are happy with the security measures at New Delhi.

Team chef de mission Steve Moneghetti dismissed reports of claims that there is an 80 percent risk of an attack during the Games.

'Our reports are not that high to be honest ... they're more like a 50-50 risk, that's of an indirect terrorism, so that's not Games related, that's for the city in general,' he said.

Australian opposition Leader Tony Abbott said he would like to see all of Australia's athletes attending the Games.

'I'd be very wary of giving the terrorists a win and the trouble if there were big pull-outs from these Games is that it would appear to give terrorism a win,' he said.

Australia's Samuels pulls out of Commonwealth Games

Tue, Sep 21 10 08:37 PM

Discus world champion Dani Samuels has pulled out of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi due to security and health concerns, the Australian team said on Tuesday.

"This is the hardest decision of my life and not one I took lightly," the bronze medallist from the 2006 Melbourne Games said in a statement.

"I love competing for Australia, winning a Commonwealth Games is important to me and something I've dreamed of.

"My whole year's training has been planned for this event but yesterday I couldn't even bring myself to train with stress and anxiety regarding the issues surrounding the Games."

The 22-year-old informed Australian team officials of her decision on Tuesday, two days after two Taiwanese nationals were wounded when suspected militants opened fire on a tourist bus outside the Jama Masjid mosque.

"Her reason, after great deliberation, is due to security and other potential problems to her health and well-being in New Delhi," Samuels's manager Hayden Knowles said.

"This was of such great concern to Dani that it was affecting her training, her health and her desire to participate."

Samuel's withdrawal strikes a huge blow for organisers, who have been at pains to assure athletes will be able to compete safely despite heightened security fears and some threats from militant groups that the Oct. 3-14 event would be targeted.

The Games has already been hit with several high profile withdrawals, including multiple Olympic champion Usain Bolt and Kenya's David Rudisha, who broke the 800 metres world record twice last month.

Organisers have also been embarrassed by the collapse of a footbridge just outside the main stadium that injured 23 people on Tuesday and have endured a raft of criticism from competing teams over unfinished and unclean athletes' accommodation.

The Australian Commonwealth Games Association chief executive Perry Crosswhite said he respected Samuels's decision, but reiterated that the delegation had been advised that the level of security was "acceptable" for athletes to compete.

"We have held the position all along that it is the individual athlete's prerogative as to whether or not they wish to travel to Delhi and participate in the 2010 Commonwealth Games," he said.

"It is a very personal decision and one which athletes must make in consultation with their family and individual support teams, and we accept and respect Dani's decision."

Samuels won gold at the world championships in Berlin last year.

Australian world champion discus thrower pulls out of CWG

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 08:23 PM

Match-fixing allegations have tarnished cricket's reputation: Ponting

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 08:03 PM

Chandigarh, Sep 21 (ANI): Australian skipper Ricky Ponting on Tuesday accepting that the ongoing match-fixing imbroglio has tarnished the reputation of cricket as a 'clean sport' urged the players to maintain the clean reputation of the sport by maintaining their performances.

Ponting maintained that the only way to save the image of cricket was for players to give their honest best in performances.

"Over the past few weeks, there is no doubt that the game's image has taken a battering as a result of some of the allegations. We are going to do everything in the game between India and Australia to make sure that we play the game in the right way and to make it a spectacular watch," said Ponting.

It may be recalled that three Pakistan players - former captain Salman Butt, Mohammed Amir and Mohammed Asif - were caught on camera and accused of spot-fixing in a sting operation by a British tabloid recently.

The players were charged on September 2 under the anti-corruption code of the International Cricket Council and were provisionally suspended from all forms of cricket and related activities until the conclusion of the case.

"There have been intense battles between teams, but that is how international cricket is supposed to be. As long as players from both sides understand what is wrong and what is right, and both teams play in the right spirit of the game, what has happened in the past will be forgotten. It is just a matter of moving on and playing," said Ponting.

The Australian team arrived here on Monday for a two Test series against India.

Australia's first match is a three-day game against the Board President XI from Saturday. (ANI)

Minor hiccups, Games will be very successful: Jaipal Reddy

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 07:07 PM

New Delhi, Sep 21 (IANS) Brushing aside concerns over preparedness for the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games, India's Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy described them as 'minor hiccups' and stated that the Games would be 'very successful'.

'I am not worried at all. I am confident and cool about organising of the Games. We will have a very successful Games,' Reddy told reporters here, answering queries on whether he was worried about the Games' preparedness with just 12 days to go for the mega event.

His comments came on the day Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Michael Fennell said parts of the Games Village were still not fit for accommodation. Concerns have also been raised by contingents from Canada, New Zealand and Scotland about the state of the village.

Reddy, who also heads the Group of Ministers (GoM) on CWG, said they 'cannot change horses mid way' and the Indian government was supporting the mega event.

'Government of India is lending all support,' said Reddy on being asked about the remarks of Mike Hooper, CGF chief executive, that he was disappointed over the state of cleanliness at the Games Village.

Hooper had described the conditions there as 'filthy' and had sought the direct intervention of the Indian government so as to provide maximum resources to fix the problems.

'There is no point in changing horses mid way. The Indian government is giving its support,' Reddy added.

The minister, however, said he would not be able to comment about the collapse of a foot over-bridge near Jawaharlal Nehru stadium Tuesday, injuring more than 20 labourers, five of them seriously.

Reddy also said there were concerns about 'cleanliness and maintenance'.

'Their concerns are about cleanliness and maintenance. They will be handled immediately. There is nothing to worry. There has been no complaint about the quality, but quality of services and maintenance. This problem will be handled urgently,' he said.

The minister also said that more labourers have been pressed into service, while some more have been roped in for cleanliness and maintenance.

Reddy also said that the concerned agencies and officials of the Games have addressed the concerns of the contingents.

'The concerned agencies have given explanations. As a minister it is not proper for me to react,' he added.

Our standard of cleanliness may be different from theirs: Bhanot

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 06:53 PM

New Delhi, Sep 21 (IANS) Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) secretary-general Lalit Bhanot said Tuesday that the concerns about hygiene and cleanliness at the Games Village will be addressed and standards upgraded within 36 hours to the expectations of the visiting contingents.

Reacting to adverse reports regarding the 'filthy living conditions' at the Village, Bhanot said standards of cleanliness and hygiene differed from one person to the other and what one thought was clean may not appear that clean to others.

'We have told the Chefs de Mission that the level of hygiene and cleanliness at the Games Village will be upgraded within 36 hours. We are doing entire cleaning of the residential wing. In fact cleaning in 50 percent of the towers is already complete and the remaining will be done in 36 hours,' said Bhanot.

Bhanot admitted that the organising committee has received Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Mike Fennell's letter to Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrashekar, the government's seniormost official who is overseeing the Games' preparations, in which the former expressed his concerns about the cleanliness and hygiene at the Village as have some visiting delegations, particularly the New Zealand chef de mission.

'This is not a matter of shame; all work will be done by tomorrow,' Bhanot told a questioner.

'Fennell wrote a letter raising some concerns and today cabinet secretary, sports secretary, Lt.Governor and principal secretary to the prime minister met and said that all support should be lent (by the Indian government) to organising committee,' he said.

Manchester City stars bid 12k pounds for a night out with Jordan

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 06:49 PM

London, Sept 21 (ANI): England and Manchester City stars Adam Johnson, 23, and Micah Richards, 22, bid 12,000 pounds between them for a night out with Katie Price, who is looking to raise the funds for the Meningitis Trust.

The 32-year-old mum-of-three put herself up for auction and promised to leave hubby Alex Reid at home.

"Katie wanted to do her bit to raise money for the meningitis charity. So she offered to take the winner out for a posh dinner at a restaurant of their choice - and insisted Alex would not be coming along," The Mirror quoted a source as saying.

"Adam Johnson is a huge Katie fan. He had posters of her on his bedroom wall back in the day. But at 10k pounds, Adam stalled so Micah came to the rescue, saying he'd chip in another 2,000 pounds and they'd both take Katie out for supper," he added.

"When the hammer came down on 12,000 pounds, everyone cheered. Katie went over and gave both boys a peck on the cheek and told them, tongue in cheek, they were in for the 'night of their lives'," the source said. (ANI)

Wenger admits FA charge and misses Spurs match

Published>Tue, Sep 21 10 06:37 PM

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted an FA improper conduct charge and will serve a one-match touchline ban when his team play at Tottenham Hotspur in a League Cup tie on Tuesday.

The 60-year-old Frenchman accepted the standard sanction of a one match ban and an 8,000 pounds ($12,500) fine, the FA said in a statement on their website (www.thefa.com) on Tuesday.

"The ban will be served with immediate effect," the statement confirmed.

Wenger was cited after reacting angrily when Sunderland striker Darren Bent scored in the fifth minute of additional time to force a 1-1 draw against Arsenal at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

The fourth official's display board had indicated a minimum of four minutes additional time would be played.

Wenger angrily remonstrated with match officials, furious over the time added on by referee Phil Dowd.

Bent's goal, with the last kick of the Premier League game, cancelled out Cesc Fabregas's first-half effort and denied Arsenal the chance of going top of the table.
