Atwal misses cut at US Open

Published Sat, Jun 19 10 12:21 PM

Pebble Beach (USA), Jun 19 (PTI) The turnaround that Arjun Atwal needed did not happen and the Indian golfer missed the cut at the US Open after carding a disastrous four-over 75 for the second successive day here. The Orlando-based pro signed off with a total of eight-over 150. It was an ominous start to the proceedings as Atwal stumbled to a bogey on the first. Another bogey followed on the third hole as Atwal made the turn two-over. The back-nine seemed no better as Atwal continued his bogey spree, dropping two more on the 10th and 12th. He finally found a birdie on the 13th but back-to-back bogeys on the 16th and 17th put paid to any hopes of a revival. However, he did manage to gain a shot on the closing hole but that wasn''t good enough as he missed the cut by a stroke. Ireland''s Graeme McDowell (68) took a two-stroke lead with a total of three-under 139.

Angry England fans hit back at Rooney's f-word rant

Published>Sat, Jun 19 10 11:51 AM

London, Jun 19 (ANI): Disappointed at their team's performance against Algeria, England fans have angrily reacted at ace striker Wayne Rooney's claims that they are not loyal to the side.

A goalless draw against Algeria, ranked 30th in the world, prompted boos on the final whistle from the England contingent in the crowd.

Rooney, whose performance had dipped, reacted by shouting into a television camera: "Nice to see your own fans booing you. If that's what loyal support is ... for fuck's sake."

Sky News reports that disappointed fans vented their anger outside the stadium in Cape Town.

Richard Sanderson, a lifelong England fan from Lincolnshire, said he was one of the fans booing Rooney and his teammates off the field.

"Rooney had the worst game he's ever had for England. The lack of effort put in by the English players was unbelievable. They're not fit to wear the shirt," he said.

"With the effort they put in and the money we've paid to get out here, if they think they deserve the English fans' applause they can think again,' Sanderson added.

Steve Stoddart, a pharmacist from Bristol, said: "For us it's cost a lot of money to come out here. We are loyal supporters. The England players at the end never came over and clapped the crowd."

Neil Jensen, a 39-year-old a British ex-pat living in Hong Kong, flew in especially for the game.

He said coach Fabio Capello should make changes to the team, including dropping Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard to make way for a genuine winger, adding that Rooney should also be dropped. (ANI)

India bets big on football

Published>Sat, Jun 19 10 11:47 AM

New Delhi, June 19 -- A lowly 133 on the FIFA world soccer rankings, India may never qualify for the World Cup but we're no slouches when it comes to betting on the matches. Bookies operating illegal betting rackets in the Capital are taking bets worth "more than Rs 1,000 crore" for each match, a source revealed. While it's impossible to get official numbers, these numbers suggest that the betting on World Cup matches is 20 times that for cricket matches. That's saying a lot for a cricket nation. And the betting isn't just a local phenomenon. Indians are betting big on the international scene too and using plastic for it - international credit cards that allow payments to be made legally and without any fuss. "The betting market for cricket is mostly restricted to Asian countries but for football it is global. There is no comparison," said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity. Investigators also claimed that a sizeable portion of the transactions are taking place through hawala channels (illegal transfer of money done manually).

"Presently, the bookies' favourites are Brazil and Argentina," said the officer.

Dilshan dazzles as Bangladesh crash and burn

Published>Sat, Jun 19 10 11:21 AM

Dambulla, June 18 -- Tillakaratne Dilshan is to Sri Lanka what Virender Sehwag is to India. Both are talismanic all-rounders who can strike in the blink of an eye. After Bangladesh caved in against Sehwag's off-breaks on Wednesday, it was Dilshan who pulverized the minnows with an all-round performance. The Lankan all-rounder backed his swashbuckling innings of 71 with three wickets to dump Bangladesh out of Asia Cup 2010. Chasing 312, Tamim Iqbal scored a fighting 51 off 53 deliveries, but the visitors fell short by 126 runs. After an early foray, the Bangladesh middle-order collapsed for the umpteenth time, fizzling out of the run chase. Earlier, winning the toss proved twice lucky for Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara. Against Pakistan, they swung back with Lasith Malinga's five-for as the Dambulla pitch helped lateral movement under lights. The plot unfolded nearly the same way on Friday, except that the Lankan openers fulfilled their roles to perfection. Sri Lanka have prospered whenever Tillekaratne Dilshan has fired at the top. And Dilshan was in no mood to waste an opportunity to whip up a run fest against Bangladesh. The visitors got the message when he smashed Mashrafe Mortaza for four in the second ball of the day. He clobbered anything pitched full or short and Mortaza was once again punished over square leg for six that fetched the Lankan opener $1500. Bangladesh's plight worsened when runs started coming from both ends. Upul Tharanga piled on the Bangladeshi agony with his effortless strokeplay and the southpaw played some exquisite drives through cover. The mayhem could have been worse had Bangla skipper Shakib Al Hasan not broken the partnership. A change of pace did the trick as Dilshan returned a simple catch to Hasan. Soon after, a sharp catch by keeper Mushfiqur Rahim ended Tharanga's reign.

Purple reigns in LA as Lakers make it two in a row

Published>Sat, Jun 19 10 11:17 AM

Los Angeles, June 19 -- "We've come a long, long way together, through the hard times and the good. I have to celebrate you, baby. I have to praise you like I should." That's how Fatboy Slim would have put things into perspective in the wake of the biggest showdown in NBA history, again. Again because the rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, is one of the most celebrated, akin to Man United vs Liverpool or here in America, the Red Sox vs the Yankees. The words fit into to place perfectly from multiple perspectives. For both teams, it has been a long, hard road to the finals, and the deciding game of the seven match series, things went down to the very last seconds. In the end, backed by a home crowd that was quiet for the most part, but woke up in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter, the Lakers, with all their big guns firing, powered home to a narrow 83-79 win to bag their 16th NBA title. Between the Lakers and the Celtics, they now have 33 NBA Championships out of a total of 64. Lakers' coach Phil Jackson took home his his 11th Championship ring as coach as head coach, and 12th overall (he won one as a reserve with the Knicks in 1973).

Ten minutes after winning the Championship, already the talk was of winning another. That was the hunger, missing from the Celtics and proved the difference between the two.

McDowell retains Open lead as Mickelson makes move

Graeme McDowell of Ireland watches his tee shot on the 16th hole during the second...

Published>Sat, Jun 19 10 10:37 AM

Graeme McDowell emerged as the halfway leader in the U.S. Open while Phil Mickelson briefly tamed a Pebble Beach course on Friday that has tormented the world's best players for two days.

Northern Ireland's McDowell sank two monster birdie putts in a round of 68 that saw him break from a tightly packed field to grab the outright lead at three-under-par.

McDowell will head into the final two rounds two strokes ahead of Mickelson, Ernie Els, Ryo Ishikawa and Dustin Johnson, who all made moves but were stalled by a teasing course.

They were also the only five players in the 156-man field to break par for the first two rounds as a host of major champions failed to make the cut at seven-over.

Tiger Woods did survive after adding a one-over 72 to his first day 74, but his long stranglehold atop the world rankings is now under serious threat from Mickelson.

The U.S. Masters champion shot a brilliant 66, the best round of the tournament so far, and was poised to go even lower after making five birdies in the first eight holes before he too fell victim to the deceptively tough Californian layout.

He lost his momentum when he made a bogey at the ninth and while he retrieved a shot at the 10th he was unable to pick up any more shots on the notoriously tough back nine.

"I made a lot of putts, I was very fortunate," said Mickelson, who can overtake Woods for the number one ranking as early as Sunday. "I just got hot with the putter, made some birdies early on and got through the tough holes with pars."

It was partly because of Woods's runaway 15-shot victory at the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach that tournament organizers toughened the layout for this year's championship, tightening fairways, extending the rough and building more strategically placed bunkers to add to the unique natural hazards of the surrounding beaches and cliffs.

Woods did not make a single birdie in his opening round and although he made three on Saturday he still finished the day seven shots behind McDowell. He has never won a major from that far back but he was still talking up his chances.

"I'm right there in the championship. I just need to make a few more birdies, a few more putts on the weekend and I'll be right there," said Woods.

'LINKS GOLF ON STEROIDS'

McDowell, his confidence soaring after he recently won the Wales Open, made six birdies, including two putts over 20 feet, but spoiled his progress with three bogeys, including one at his last to leave him his best chance yet of winning a major.

"I'd be lying if I hadn't thought about picking up the trophy Sunday afternoon," said McDowell "I think that's only natural but I'm trying to be very realistic about it."

The unflappable Els, who won the U.S. Open in 1994 and 1997, put himself in contention for a third title with a 68 on a course that tested his body and mind but also helped arouse his deepest competitive instincts.

"It's almost links golf on steroids, with the rough and the grass around the bunkers," the South African said. "I needed a round like today to get me back in the tournament."

RISING STAR

Japanese teenager Ishikawa provided another demonstration of why he is regarded as one of the hottest talents in golf with two late birdies in a round of 71.

Playing in his first U.S. Open and being followed by a huge Japanese media contingent still buzzing about his 58 in May, he was given the royal seal of approval from his 60-year-old playing partner Tom Watson.

"He reminded me of me when I was 18," said Watson, who won eight majors, including the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

Johnson is one of the biggest hitters on the tour and his appearance on the leaderboard was no real surprise as he won the last two regular PGA Tour events at Pebble Beach.

The three overnight leaders all dropped back through the field after starting the day at two-under.

Britain's Paul Casey and Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge shot rounds of 73 to be level par while American Shaun Micheel fell to three-over with a 76. Germany's Alex Cejka and American Jerry Kelly joined Casey and de Jonge at even par.

Conditions were almost perfect when the early groups teed off with the greens slowed down by overnight watering and only a gentle breeze blowing in from the Pacific Ocean. They were more difficult in the afternoon when Mickelson played, adding more credence to his performance.

But none of the players could really take advantage and were at times made to look like weekend hackers, with at least three players forced to climb off the fairways to play shots from the sides of the cliff and the beach below.

Former U.S. Open champions Geoff Ogilvy and Michael Campbell missed the cut after struggling in both rounds while South Korea's U.S. PGA champion Yang Yong-eun spectacularly fell apart on the back nine to make an inglorious early exit.

Playing in the same group as Mickelson, he was cruising along after a flawless front nine when he suddenly dropped 13 shots over the back nine, including two triple bogeys and a double.

The beautiful game versus cricket

Published>Sat, Jun 19 10 10:17 AM

India, June 19 -- Watching two sets of eleven men competing with each other while chasing a rotund ball with the sole aim of creating space and time to score a goal, enthralls the world as no other sport does. The audiences keep growing as the on-going World Cup viewership suggests and even in a country like India, whose obsession with cricket is well documented, soccer mania grips it once every four years. This is the time when cricket takes a backseat and all that matters -for not just the well-bred and well-heeled, but also those on the margins - is to get glued to TV sets. We all soak in a spectacle, which combines fluid, feline movements with aggression and speed that weave magical patterns on the field to leave us spellbound. If you still care to surf channels while The Game is on, you will find familiar figures on your screens contesting a sport involving bat and ball in which one team is trying to score runs and the other trying its best to prevent that from happening. In contrast to football, this is a much more complex activity to understand, as the skills required for playing and the rules governing them are not easy to comprehend, unless the watcher has been formally trained to do so. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand why football is and will continue to grow in popularity and cricket will remain a game played by a miniscule number. It is far easy to get mesmerised by Leo Messi's dexterity and control, his nimble movements, understanding of spaces and his selfless play which makes him part with the ball at the right time so that his team benefits from his delectable skills. It is not difficult to admire the ball skills of a Robinho but also realise that he hangs on to the ball for too long, depriving his team of those precious seconds which turn an opportunity into a waste.

Football is a game which may intimidate you at first with the sheer physicality involved, but once the match begins the same big, strong and "brutal" men, in reality don't always kick the ball. It is a 90-minute courtship in which they cajole the ball, caress it, entreat it and plead with it in an effort to direct its movements towards the goal. That is possibly why a Maradona will remain a figure to idolise for the world and a Sachin Tendulkar for a few.

Dilshan rues lost opportunity to score big against B''desh

Published Fri, Jun 18 10 11:37 PM

Dambulla, Jun 18 (PTI) Tillakaratne Dilshan was happy with his man of the match performance but rued the missed opportunity to score big in Sri Lanka''s emphatic 126-run win over Bangladesh in the Asia Cup cricket tournament at the Rangiri Dambulla International stadium here today. "I am glad that I got the man of the match award and took three wickets, but there was an opportunity today for me to make a big score possibly in the region of 150," said Dilshan. "I was hitting the ball well but got out in the 16th over. Had I hung around a little longer, I think I was in for a big one," said the flamboyant opener, who had scored ten hundreds in all forms of the game last season. Dilshan smashed eleven fours and a six in his breezy 51-ball 71. He later went on to take three wickets for 37 runs to steer Lanka home with plenty to spare. The right-handed batsman said he always like to dominate bowling with his powerful strokeplay. "I always intend to attack in the first ten overs and then settle down and play a longer innings. My game plan is to take the attack to the bowlers and provide my side with a good start," he said. Dilshan said he wasn''t surprised with his bowling performance and always knew that he would be given a bowl. "Since we played only one spinner (Muttiah Muralitharan), I was aware of this thing. I bowled the right line to get those wickets," said Dilshan, who aspires to complete 1000 ODI runs this season. Meanwhile, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan conceded that Dilshan took the match away from their reach. "We didn''t start well with the new ball. Sri Lankan openers, especially Dilshan took the match away from us. "It is frustrating that we have not been playing to our potential despite doing so well over the last two months. Once again we didn''t play well in the middle overs," said a beleaguered Shakib.

Asia Cup: Dilshan sparkles in Sri Lanka's victory

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 11:27 PM

Dambulla, June 18 (IANS) Tillakaratne Dilshan produced an all-round performance as Sri Lanka crushed Bangladesh by 126 runs in the Asia Cup cricket tournament here Friday.

Deciding to bat, Sri Lanka racked up 312 runs for the loss of only four wickets before bundling out Bangladesh for 186 runs in 40.2 overs.

It was Sri Lanka's second win in the tournament after narrowly beating Pakistan by 16 runs in their opening encounter.

Sri Lanka dominated the game right from the start. Dilshan, who smashed 71 off 51 balls with the help of 11 fours and one six, came back to take three Bangladesh wickets with his off-spin, dealing crucial blows to the top and middle order.

Lasith Malinga (2-35), Muttiah Muralitharan (2-38) and Chanaka Welegedera (2-31) never allowed Bangaldeshi batsmen to settle in, taking wickets at regular intervals. Opener Tamim Iqbal was the only Bangladesh batsman to put up a fight with a 53-ball 51 that included five fours and a six.

Earlier, Sri Lankan openers Tillakaratne and Upul Tharanga (54) gave Sri Lanka an explosive start scoring 111 runs in 15.5 overs to lay the foundation of a big total.

Skipper Kumar Sangakkara (52) and Mahela Jayawardene (43), Angelo Mathews (42 not out) and Chamara Kapugedera (37 not out) chipped in with useful contributions.

The pedestrian Bangladesh attack had no answers to the Sri Lankan batting powerhouse.

Dilshan and Tharanga came hard on pacers Mashrafe Mortaza and Syed Rasel and skipper Shakib Al Hasan was quick to bring himself and fast bowler Shafiul Islam (2-59).

The duo, however, scored unrestrained and brought up 100 in 12th over.

Bangladesh got the breakthrough when Dilshan offered a return catch to Shakib.

Tharanga and Sangakkara then added 44 runs before the former fell to off-spinner Mahmudullah.

Sangakkara and Jayawerdene batted through the middle overs and consolidated their position. They shared a 69-run stand for the third wicket before Jayawerdene was caught at cover-point by Shakib off Shaiful.

Shakib also got the wicket of Sangakkara as Sri Lanka reached 239 for four in 39.3 overs.

It was left for Mathews and Kapugedera to give the late charge. The two scored at a brisk pace adding an unbeaten 73 runs.

ANALYSIS - Draw shows U.S. and Slovenian limits

Slovenia's Bostjan Cesar (R) fights for the ball with Herculez Gomez of the U.S. during...

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 11:17 PM

The United States and Slovenia produced an enthralling, pulsating 2-2 draw in Group C on Friday in a game which highlighted perfectly the strengths and weaknesses of two fascinatingly imperfect teams.

Slovenia were comfortably in charge of a first half where they showed they can play sophisticated and intelligent passing football and the United States woefully failed to match them tactically or disturb their rhythm.

The 2-0 difference between the teams at the break -- after goals from the excellent Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankic -- was fair reflection of the way in which Matjaz Kek's team out-thought and out-manoeuvred a baffled U.S. side.

But the second half, when the United States bullied and bustled their way back into the game with a performance bristling with aggression and determination, exposed a soft underbelly to the Slovenian team.

The comeback, which would have been a remarkable victory had Maurice Edu's late effort not been ruled out, showed once again the impressive heart and spirit of the U.S side epitomised by Michael Bradley's equaliser which was brimming with anger and energy.

Slovenia lacked the ability that truly top teams have, to weather the storm and then regroup and regain control of a game.

Both teams now head into the final round of group matches with a chance of progress but up against exactly the styles they are clearly least comfortable against.

Slovenia have four points but face the physical presence of England, the United States have two points and are against the short-passing approach of Algeria.

Both will need to address their fundamental flaws if they are to extend their presence in South Africa beyond the group stage.

U.S coach Bob Bradley had made one change from the team which scrapped out a draw with England, bringing in creative midfielder Jose Torres for the more defence-minded Ricardo Clark.

It was a positive move from Bradley, who clearly wished to see his side control possession but it didn't work as his midfield was hopelessly outplayed by the smart Slovenes, guided by the industrious and canny Robert Koren.

Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, employed on the wide of midfield are both attackers by instinct and Donovan in particular failed to carry out his defensive duties, leaving left-back Carlos Bocanegra helplessly exposed against Birsa.

Birsa had no-one near him when he looked up and spotted Tim Howard off his line and drove home the first goal from 25 metres out -- but even that did not wake up the U.S to the need to deal with the threat coming from Slovenia's right.

Bradley did address the problem at the break and got it spot on. Benny Feilhaber came on to the left and did a fine job in reducing the influence of Birsa, Maurice Edu replaced Torres in the centre of midfield and brought in the necessary extra running and fight.

Slovenia simply didn't adapt and appeared to be shaken by Donovan's goal just three minutes after the restart which gave the Americans real belief.

The U.S. showed that the long ball game is not always to be scoffed at, as they made good use of Jozy Altidore's height against a Slovene defence that suddenly looked uncomfortable.

Faced with a direct and physical response, the Slovenians made the fatal mistake of defending deeply and hoping to hold on to their lead and they paid the price.

Lankan put one foot in final with huge win over Bangladesh

Published Fri, Jun 18 10 10:27 PM

Joseph Hoover Dambulla, June 18 (PTI) Tillakaratne Dilshan produced a terrific all round show as Sri Lanka crushed Bangladesh by 126 runs to virtually qualify for the final of the Asia Cup cricket tournament here today. After scoring an intimidating 312 for four, the hosts bowled out Bangladesh for a mere 186 and collected a bonus point to take their points tally to nine from two matches at the Rangiri Dambulla International stadium. Dilshan first scored a fiery 71 while opening the innings and then capped the successful day with a three-wicket haul. India, who play Pakistan in a crucial match tomorrow, have five points from their six-wicket win over Bangladesh earlier in the week. Pakistan, who lost their opener to Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh (two defeats) are yet to open their account. Bangladesh were hopelessly outclassed in all departments of the game. The bowling was far from international standard, reflecting that the team had not improved much since breaking into the ICC league in 1999. The batting too lacked depth with batsmen casting away their wickets after getting their eye in. Tamim Iqbal top scored with 51 (52b, 5x4, 1x6) while Junaid Siddique made a gutsy 35-ball 38 before being superbly caught by a diving Nuwan Kulasekara at square leg off Muthiah Muralitharan (2/38). The rest of the batsmen lacked the wherewithal to challenge the Lankan dominance. Earlier, half centuries by Dislhan, Upul Tharanag (54) and Kumar Sangakkara (52) and a brisk 73-run partnership between Angelo Mathews (42 not out) and Chamara Kapugedara (37 not out) for the unbroken fifth wicket put Lanka in total command. Opting to bat on ''Victory Day'' in front of a boisterous home crowd, Sri Lanka galloped to 111 for no loss with Dilshan and Tharanga punishing the profligate Bangladesh new-ball attack led by Mashrafe Mortaza. Mortaza conceded as many as 26 runs in two overs to set the tone for the Lankan rampage. Bangladesh earned the breakthrough in the 16th over when Dilshan offered a feeble return catch to Shakib Al Hasan, the ball lobbing of the leading edge as he shaped to work the left arm spinner to square. The flamboyant opener smashed 11 boundaries and a six during his 51-ball tenure at the square. More PTI JH AT

Delhi Commonwealth Games will be the best ever: Sheila Dikshit

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 10:07 PM

New Delhi, June 18 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Friday that the upcoming Commonwealth Games in New Delhi would be one of the best games ever organised.

Addressing an inaugural event at the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee headquarters here, Dikshit said: "These Games really will be one of the best that has been conducted anywhere in the world. We are almost everyday feeling more confident that we are up to it."

"We are grateful to have the Games in Delhi because what is being constructed for Delhi right now to facilitate the Games is going to be a great legacy for India," she added.

Speaking on the occasion, Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi said the Games would be a huge success the way preparations were shaping up.

"Things are shaping up and all the foreigners are realising that developing countries like India can do it. And we are going to do it. There are no two ways about it," said Kalmadi.

He also refuted claims that there was a rift between him and Dikshit, or the Union Sports Minister M S Gill.

"Be it Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman of the Organising Committee, or Mrs Sheila Dikshit, who is looking after Delhi, or Dr Gill who is looking after sports, we are all one and we are looking after Team India under the leadership of our Prime Minister," said Kalmadi.

India is expecting two million tourists in New Delhi for the Games, as well as about 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states.

Construction delays have raised fears that the venues for the Commonwealth Games may not be ready on time, potentially embarrassing host India, which hopes the Games would showcase its rising economic power. (ANI)

Breakfasting Koreans don't make meal of big defeat

South Korea's Kim Jae-sung (L-R), Cha Du-ri and Kim Dong-jin attend a soccer training session...

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 09:57 PM

South Korea's bright faces at breakfast, an upbeat "recovery" training session and brave words on Friday indicated that they had effectively bounced back from their 4-1 World Cup thumping by Argentina.

Coach Huh Jung-moo said the players had overcome their disappointment from 24 hours earlier and were now focussed on their final Group B meeting with Nigeria in Durban on Tuesday.

If South Korea win, and Argentina top the group by beating Greece, they will join the South Americans in the second round and a likely meeting with Mexico or Uruguay.

"We are not depressed or too disappointed this morning," he said.

"We felt that the winnable games for us (in the group) would be against Greece and Nigeria and, now, the Nigeria game is very important.

"Everyone was disappointed last night, but in the dining room this morning there was a good mood. I am sure we will be ready. We will be bit more focussed, too, I hope.

"They will be without (Sani) Kaita, but they have a lot of other strong players and it will be hard," he said.

"They have very talented players, but very different from those of Argentina or Greece. We will attack, but this time we will not leave the back door open. We must be more tenacious."

South Korea won their opening match against Greece 2-0. They lie second behind Argentina with the Greeks on three points. Nigeria have been beaten by both Argentina and Greece.

In South Africa, even Germany misses a penalty

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 09:37 PM

Port Elizabeth, June 18 (DPA) The English striker Gary Lineker is famous for scoring lots of goals and making one unforgettable comment: 'Soccer is a game for 22 people that run around, play the ball ... and in the end Germany always wins.'

It may be time to update that truism after Lukas Podolski missed a penalty Friday that would have enabled 10-man Germany to pull even with Serbia in a crucial Group D match in South Africa.

Man of the Match, Slovakia keeper Vladimir Stojkovic, guessed the right way, diving to his left to paw out Podolski's spot kick and become a hero to the Serbian people.

Podolski, who had earlier missed several good opportunities to pull his side level, had no explanation for the miss. 'It wasn't poorly taken, but he guessed the right corner,' he said. 'It's disappointing but I accept responsibility for it.'

The last penalty miss during regular time by a German national player was so long ago that no-one among the hundreds of German journalists could remember when it was.

It needed some frantic calls to the archives to come up with the answer: Uli Hoeness' miss against Poland in 1974.

Since then the German team have been knocking them in with the regularity of country's legendary railways. The only two misses since them came in shoot-outs when Hoeness missed in the final loss to Czechoslovakia in the European Championships in 1976 and Uli Steilike missed in the World Cup semi-final against France in 1986. Even then Germany went on to the game.

Germany famously beat England on penalties at Italia 90 and Euro 96 without missing a kick, and beat Argentina in 2006 on penalties to advance to the semi-finals.

Thousands protest in Kosovo against headscarf ban

A Serb woman is reflected in a mirror hanging outside her home in the village...

Published Fri, Jun 18 10 08:57 PM

Around 5,000 people protested in Kosovo on Friday against a government decision to ban pupils from wearing Muslim headscarves in public schools.

Around 90 percent of Kosovo's population are Muslims but the former Serbian province, which declared independence in 2008, remains a largely secular country.

Protesters, who came to the capital from all over the country, urged the government to withdraw its decision and not to "discriminate against Muslims."

"We will continue the protests until they will allow our daughters to go to school with headscarves," said organiser Halil Kastrati.

Angry protesters with banners that read "Don't use our state against us" and "Communism is over" marched to the ministry of education, which had approved the ban.

"This is not a uniform but my religious obligation. I respect my religion but I also want to go to my faculty," said student Fitore Abazi.

FIA to inspect Chennai race track

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 07:47 PM

Chennai, June 18 (IANS) The Madras Motor Race Trust track at Sriperumbudur near here will be inspected over the weekend as part of FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) certification process.

FIA track inspector Beppe Musciony is scheduled to arrive here Saturday morning and later proceed to the track for inspection that will take place on conclusion of the day's proceedings in the JK Tyre National Racing Championship.

The track was last certified by the FIA in 1998 when Formula 3 races were held. But that certification is presently invalid in view of sea changes in the FIA regulations governing recognition of motor racing circuits.

Last year, the track received FIM certification to conduct international two-wheeler racing ahead of the Petronas Asia championship.

Certification for international four-wheeler racing has different parameters, especially concerning the safety by way of run-off areas and other aspects like track width, configuration, drainage, Paddock and Pit lane that have to conform to FIA specifications.

Racing circuits are graded from 1 to 6 in descending order with a Formula One circuit qualifying for Grade 1 certification.

Younis unlikely to return to Tests against Australia

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 07:37 PM

Karachi, June 18 (IANS) Younis Khan's plans to return to Test cricket against Australia in England received a jolt Friday when it was revealed that the former Pakistan captain might be banned again by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

PCB's legal advisor Talib Rizvi has said that Younis was not cleared despite the clearance issued by the PCB-appointed one-man tribunal - Justice (retd) Irfan Qadir - that set aside his indefinite ban earlier this month.

'I need to make it clear that Irfan Qadir, while removing the indefinite ban, ordered a remand of his case, seeking a fresh but defined ban for him,' Talib told The Express Tribune Friday while explaining that Qadir was not content with the nature of the ban imposed since there was no time duration.

'Qadir asked for a new ban and because of this Younis is still not cleared and is ineligible to play for Pakistan.'

Younis was included in the 35-man squad for the Asia Cup and the tour of England, a notion enough to suggest that the PCB had decided to include him in future squads.

Talib added that the PCB will shortly issue a show-cause notice to Younis in which it would redefine the nature and length of the ban.

'It's up to the chairman to decide the duration but I can confirm one thing that Younis will get the notice before the team's selection for the tour of England tour that takes place on June 20,' said Talib before adding that all the punished players except Younis assured the chairman that they would not repeat their mistakes.

'The Akmal brothers and Shoaib Malik regretted their actions after their fines and bans were overturned but Younis and his lawyer kept on giving statements against the PCB.'

Meanwhile, Tafazzul confirmed that Younis' lawyer Ahmed Qayyum, who was unavailable for comments, was aware of the outcome of the last hearing that was held on June 5. Qayyum, in an earlier statement, said he was ready for a second 'battle' with the board, if required.

'Bad girl' Serena vows 'not to break' any rackets at Wimbledon

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 07:21 PM

London, June 18(ANI): Nine months after her foul-mouthed outburst at a US Open line judge, Serena Williams has promised to be on her best behaviour when Wimbledon starts next week.

"I've demolished a few rackets here, but I'll try not to do that this year," The Independent quoted Williams, as saying.

"I didn't break any at the French Open. I think that was my first Slam in years where I haven't done that," she added.

Williams further said that she doesn't think the New York incident would affect her relationship with the London crowd.

"It was a while ago. I think people can really understand my passion for the game and how much I love to play and how much I love to just be out there competing on the court," she added.

She also said that after losing in the French Open quarterfinals, she spent the best part of a fortnight back home training in Florida's hard courts.

"I've just hit on grass here today and yesterday. There aren't too many grass courts in the US, so I just adopt Andre Agassi's method. I read once about how he never practiced on the grass, he just played on hard courts," Williams said. (ANI)

Twelfth man Maradona inspires Messi's Argentina

Argentina's coach Diego Maradona (R) and Lionel Messi hug after their 2010 World Cup Group...

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 07:17 PM

Argentina's exciting start to the World Cup is down to Lionel Messi's form, their attacking instincts and Diego Maradona's presence almost as a 12th player.

The colourful coach, who in the qualifiers cut a forlorn figure as the players failed to carry out his plans and who seemed unable to find answers from the touchline, makes his presence felt at games from the pre-match warm-up onwards.

Ever since Argentina qualified for the finals at the last gasp he has said: "I know what it takes to win the World Cup".

Maradona has since been transmitting that belief to his players, not just through motivation but in tactics.

He held a quick discussion with midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron on the touchline during a pause in the 1-0 win over Nigeria on Saturday and embraced Angel Di Maria because the brilliant young winger was struggling with stage fright.

In their second Group B game, a 4-1 victory over South Korea on Thursday, Maradona revitalised the attack by taking off Carlos Tevez and sending on Sergio Aguero.

EASY GROUP

Presented with a relatively easy group for a nation that has twice won the world title, Argentina have taken the game to their opponents and ensured they have won with set pieces if the skills of their forwards did not immediately bring goals.

Fortunately, defensive lapses have not cost them dear.

"When a team's state of mind is good, their potential grows," former top flight Argentine midfielder Ruben Capria, now a media pundit, told Reuters.

Maradona set out to play Brazil in a qualifier in September with similar tactics to those used against Nigeria and South Korea but ended up with egg on his face after a 3-1 home defeat.

"The individual performances are on the rise and that lifts the team," Capria said of their form in South Africa. "When the players came home for the qualifiers they did not play well."

Maradona pointed to the squad's depth, saying reserves slot in seamlessly and changes he might make against Greece on Tuesday due to injury or bookings would not weaken the team.

'EXCEPTIONAL MESSI'

As for Messi, Capria said: "He has exceptional powers to make a difference."

Messi could already have chalked up three or four goals and there is no doubt that in this form the goals will come from his sweet left foot.

The second goal of Gonzalo Higuain's hat-trick against the Koreans was "98 percent Messi's for the move and his shot which came back off the post," added Capria.

Messi said: "I also had several chances but, no problem, I want to score but I'm not going to go crazy because I haven't."

He is making the others play, from deeper against South Korea to overcome their tight, scaled marking.

With qualification almost certain, the question is how well Argentina will do when they face another of soccer's big powers in the knockout phase or perhaps Uruguay in the second round.

"In football the result is never settled beforehand," said Capria.

Messi knows that only too well, having been surprised by Spain's loss to Switzerland in the European champions' opener on Wednesday and saying "that shows the World Cup is not easy".

Pietersen leaves Hampshire

London, Jun 18 (ANI): Kevin Pietersen has left Hampshire as it was becoming impossible to continue playing on the South Coast because he lived 80 miles away in London.

Pietersen's determination to play in London automatically limits his choice to Surrey and Middlesex.

Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove said: "Given England's critical dependence on KP, we have not seen anything like as much of him as we wanted."

"I don't blame Kevin but these international players are now owned almost entirely by England," The Sun quoted Bransgrove, as saying. (ANI)

Capello bans vuvuzelas from English team hotel

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 06:47 PM

London, June 18 (IANS) England football coach Fabio Capello has banned the vuvuzelas from the team hotel at the World Cup in South Africa.

The drone of vuvuzelas has been the centre of a controversy this World Cup with several teams and players saying it is making difficult to hear anything.

Even many broadcasters have got several complaints from television viewers to find a way to mute the persistent noise in the stadiums caused by blowing of the vuvuzela horns. FIFA, though, said they will not ban the vuvuzelans.

With England facing Algeria in a crucial encounter Friday, Capello wants his team to be fully focussed and not distracted by anything.

'Capello, who is turning 64 Friday, blew his top after hearing residents had been sounding their annoying horns until 3 a.m. the night before his team checked in at Cape Town's swanky Vineyard Hotel And Spa yesterday afternoon to prepare for tonight's match against Algeria,' the English media reported.

Hotel bosses confirmed that anyone found with a vuvuzela on the site would be thrown out.

'England are our VIP guests and we will be making them as comfortable as possible.

'They will not be disturbed by vuvuzelas here. They are not being allowed in the hotel and there are none on the premises,' a spokesman for the Vineyard was quoted as saying.

Gangjee, Himmat Rai tied 26th in Queen''s Cup

Published Fri, Jun 18 10 06:21 PM

Samui (Thailand), Jun 18 (PTI) Himmat Rai brought home a second round card of two-under 69, best by an Indian, to join compatriot Rahil Gangjee at the 26th place after the midway stage of the Queen''s Cup golf tournament here today. Three other Indians made the cut, which was set at 147, while the trio of Vikrant Chopra (148), Firoz Ali (155) and Gaurav Pratap Singh (159) crashed out after turning in poor second round cards. After an average opening round of three-over 74, Himmat carded 69 today for a two-day total of 143 and Gangjee''s second round of one-under 70 also had him with the same 36-hole aggregate. Among others, Anirban Lahiri, who carded 72 today, shared the 43rd place with fellow Indian Digvijay Singh (71) at 146. At tied 56th place with 147, Mandeo Pathania, who carded 72 today, was the only other Indian to make the cut. Thai veteran Thaworn Wiratchant produced a scintillating eight-under 63 to share the top spot along with countryman Prayad Marksaeng after the halfway stage of the USD 300,000 Asian Tour event. Chasing a record tying 12th career victory on the Asian Tour, the 43-year-old snared eight birdies for a blemish-free card at a defenceless Santiburi Samui Country Club for an eight-under 134 total.

African teams struggle at World Cup on home soil

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 06:07 PM

Pretoria, June 18 (DPA) With a record six teams at the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa, this was to be the 'African World Cup.' Since the big kick-off a week ago, however, expectations have been dampened as the teams struggle to keep pace.

While South Africa has defied critics as host of the tournament, things have not been going well for the continent's representatives where it matters most - on the pitch.

The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou, was in the forefront of advocates for Africa's first-ever World Cup. He has said he hopes an African team will reach the final.

But since last Friday's colourful opening at magnificent Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg, African teams have won just five of a possible 24 points.

The host team and Nigeria are already on the brink of early elimination. Bafana were not good enough against Uruguay on a cold day at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria.

Not even the historical significance of June 16 - date of the Soweto Uprising 34 years ago, when black students battled police - could propel skipper Aaron Mokoena and his troops to victory over Uruguay, who won 3-0.

South Africa now has to beat 1998 World Cup winners France on Tuesday in Bloemfontein and hope that Uruguay do them a big favour by defeating Mexico. If they do not, they will go down in history as the first host team not to reach the knockout stage of the World Cup.

Nigeria will be looking for a huge favour from Argentina after slumping to their second defeat, against Greece Thursday.

The Super Eagles are now bottom of Group B with no points but could still sneak into the next round by beating South Korea by at least 1-0, while counting on Lionel Messi and Co. to stop Greece in the other Group B match.

So far, the Black Stars of Ghana have recorded Africa's only victory at this World Cup, courtesy of their 1-0 win over highly rated Serbia. But their hopes for a victory party could be cut short fast if they fail to deliver against Australia on Saturday.

Ivory Coast may have looked impressive against Portugal in their opener, but what really counts is the country's 'golden generation,' led by striker Didier Drogba, getting results against Brazil on Sunday. After that, they face North Korea, who were not disgraced by co-favourites Brazil on Tuesday in Johannesburg.

The Elephants failed to reach the second round at the 2006 World Cup in Germany from a tight group that included Argentina and Serbia and Montenegro.

Both Algeria and Cameroon lost their opening matches against sides widely regarded as the weakest in their groups. They may have a tough time advancing beyond the first round.

When South Korea and Japan jointly hosted the best of world football in 2002, the Taegeuk Warriors became the first Asian team to reach the last four of the World Cup, while the Japanese went past the first round for the first time in their history.

The South Koreans literally painted the town red en route to their milestone eight years ago.

According to FIFA, international football's governing body, 75 percent of ticket holders for matches at this World Cup are South Africans. Hence the host team - and the other African teams as well - should not lack support from the stands.

'There are no prizes for being part of the host continent. You just have to go out there and earn your points,' said SkySport commentator, Martin Tyler.

'The African teams are not playing to their strength, which is to attack. They are trying to be European, playing a cagey defensive style. You just have to go for goal, that's what African teams are known for,' said Hugo Troosters, a Belgian fan in South Africa to follow Argentina.

Africa's players will have to rise to this 'once-in-a-lifetime' occasion. If they do not, it could be the worst showing by the continent since the 1982 World Cup in Spain, when no African team got out of the group stage.

The official World Cup song 'Waka Waka' says the time has come for Africa to shine. This optimism may have been misplaced.

French tennis star says she is proud to be a Muslim

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 05:37 PM

London, Jun 18 (ANI): French tennis star Aravane Rezai, the 18th women's seed at Wimbledon, is proud to be a Muslim and the fact that both of her parents are Iranian.

Rezai, 23, has even represented Iran at the Women's Islamic Games twice.

She overcame lack of family money and initial racism from France's tennis authorities to become the country's sporting golden girl and equally, is now an inspiration for Muslim women around the world.

"There are a few but not too many Muslim women in sport. Sania Mirza, who is Indian, also plays tennis but I am the first from a Persian background," The Sun quoted Rezai, as saying.

"I am proud to represent Muslim women. I know I am a model for other girls and if I can give them power or any help to improve their life that is good. I am here and I want to show on court I am a fighter. I fight for my personal life and I fight for my tennis career. They are two things," she said.

"I have two passports. When I play for France people said 'she is Iranian not French'. I am proud to be half-Iranian and that is why I have a necklace from Iran around my neck at all times. Yet I play tennis for France, the country where I grew up. So many people ask me whether I prefer France or Iran . I say: do you ask a mother which son she prefers?' I love both countries," Rezai said.

"I have made a lot of sacrifices in my life and I feel stronger than so many other players. I have a different character. I am very strong. I like to fight on the court. It comes from my double culture.

"Unfortunately I am not a practising Muslim but when I have finished my tennis career, I will be," she added. (ANI)

Rajevac warns Ghana against complacency

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 05:17 PM

Rustenburg (South Africa), June 18 (DPA) Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac cautioned his players against complacency Friday before they face Australia in a game that could see them reach the second round of the World Cup football.

After beating Serbia 1-0 in their first Group D game, a win for Ghana would ensure their progress so long as Serbia don't beat Germany.

'For us this is the match of the season,' Rajevac said. 'Although Serbia and Germany are playing on Friday, for us a win is very important.

'So we need to prepare well and concentrate because nothing is over before the last whistle. We need to be very focused and be at our best if we want to get a victory.'

Australia lost their opener 0-4 to Germany, but Rajevac is wary of taking Pim Verbeek's side lightly.

'For Australia this is their last chance and they will give their best. Australia is a very competitive nation and I'm sure they will do everything to get a win. We are ready for that, we respect them. Australia is a very strong team.

'The performance against Germany did not give a true picture of them. I think they can do much better, they can run much better. Germany scored their goals at good times and afterwards Australia had a red card, so it was easy for them to finish the match and score more goals.'

Striker Asamoah Gyan, who scored the goal against Serbia and hit the post twice, is already looking to go further than Ghana did four years ago in Germany, when Brazil beat them 3-0 in the second round.

'We are better in the world now, too,' he told fifa.com. 'In 2006 we did quite well, we went to the next stage, but this time Ghanaians are expecting more from us.

'That is why we are also going like wounded lions. Like a wounded lion, you know? So I'm hoping we just qualify for the next stage and then we see what happens from there.'

Australia will be without the suspended forward Tim Cahill, with forward Harry Kewell vowing his side can turn things around.

'It wasn't a great effort against Germany but there are two games to go and anything can happen in a World Cup,' he said.

'We were all disappointed but we are all men and we take it on the chin and we go out there and we have got to improve in the game against Ghana.'

Jabulani ball creators under fire for goal drought at World Cup

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 05:07 PM

London, June 18 (ANI): Jabulani, the ball for 2010 FIFA World Cup has landed its makers, Britain's Loughborough University, in trouble after one of the dullest and lowest scoring starts to the tournament in living memory.

Scientists from Loughborough University had boasted that Jabulani's hi-tech design would ensure exceptionally stable flight and make the ball more accurate than ever before. ut after seven days of no-shows in the field, the ball, which represented Loughborough's cutting edge technology, has apparently backfired.

Initial criticisms came forward from goalkeepers who struggled to follow the flight.

And now attacking players have said that it is very difficult to curve the ball around defensive walls and inside the posts due to its smooth surface.

Fabio Capello, the England team's manager, lashed at the university by describing the Adidas-manufactured Jabulani as "the worst ball that I have seen in my life".

Former British footballer Matthew Le Tissier accused the developers of the ball for a slow start in to the World Cup.

"I'm surprised that they have spent so much time and money developing this ball but don't appear to have tested it thoroughly. The changes have been too drastic," the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

"There has been a reluctance to shoot from open play from any kind of distance; the players don't seem to have the confidence to keep the ball under the bar. It's a shame because people want to see exciting goals," he added.

Doctor Andy Harland from Loughborough University's Sports Technology Institute, which spent four years researching the ball for Adidas, assured that the ball was the most stable and precise ever manufactured because of pioneering 'aero grooves' built into its surface. (ANI)

Indian women's hockey team draw 1-1 with Canada

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 04:27 PM

London, June 18(IANS) The Indian women's hockey team was held to a 1 -1 draw by Canada in the second game of their four-match Test series at Tamanawis Park, Surrey Friday.

Captain Surinder Kaur scored for India from a penalty stroke in the 41st minute while Canada equalised in the 63rd minute through skipper Stephanie Nesbitt.

It was a close game and the first half was goalless.

India made a strong start and earned four penalty corners in the first five minutes of the match. They should have taken the lead from the fourth penalty corner when Canadian goalkeeper Azelia Liu was beaten but defender Stephanie Jameson made a goal line save.

India earned three more penalty corners in the second half and were awarded a penalty stroke from the last one.

Surinder made no mistake as she easily beat Liu to give India the lead.

The Canadian equaliser came after captain Nesbitt, who was positioned in front of Indian goalkeeper Deepika Murty, latched onto a pass from Katie Baker and comfortably slotted home.

India beat Canada 3-2 in the first Test Wednesday.

The two teams will play the third Test Saturday at the same venue.

Stosur sprucing up her serve to hold her in good stead at Wimbledon

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 04:07 PM

London, June 18(ANI): Australian tennis ace Samantha Stosur has said that she has been practising her serve "over and over" again to give her a cutting edge on grass at Wimbledon, which gets underway on Monday.

Stosur's encouraging Wimbledon tune-up continued at Eastbourne, where she beat Scotland's Elena Baltacha to progress to the semi-finals of the grass-court event. he recovered from a first-set lapse to oust Baltacha 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 6-0, and is now the highest-ranked player left in the AEGON International after early exits for top seed Caroline Wozniacki and Francesca Schiavone.

"Once I got the break in the second set, it all opened up. I started serving better and she felt under more pressure. It just built and built and built. Midway through the third I was fully in control," Fox Sports quoted Stosur, as saying.

The World No. 7's victory has set up a showdown with Russia's Ekaterina Makarova.

Baltacha had already beaten top Chinese players Li Na and Zheng Jie to become the first UK quarter-finalist since Jo Durie in 1983. (ANI)

France to play for pride and hope for a miracle, admits Domenech

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 03:51 PM

Cape Town, June 18(ANI): After a disappointing campaign in the World Cup's group stages, France coach Raymond Domenech has said that his team will now be playing for pride and hope for a miracle.

France, World Cup winners in 1998 and runners-up four years ago, followed a 0-0 draw with Uruguay in their opening game with another uninspiring display where they lost to Mexico 0-2.

"Qualification is no longer in our own hands, but for the sake of French pride we must still play to our very best in our next match against South Africa," The Sun quoted Domenech, as saying.

"There is an infinitesimally small chance we can go through, but we are greatly disappointed with our performance tonight. We really struggled and I don't have any explanations for that right now. There's one match left," he added.

Defeat leaves France with just one point from two games, and facing the possibility of an embarrassing exit.

Meanwhile, Uruguay and Mexico meet in their last group game knowing a point will send them both into the last 16.

France play hosts South Africa in their final group game on Tuesday.

"We have to be strong and at least play for our honour. At least we must show something in the last match," Domenech said. (ANI)

Mystery behind porn star's 'love child' with Tiger Woods claim deepens

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 03:41 PM

New York, June 18 (ANI): A DNA test that was conducted to prove if golfer Tiger Woods is the father of one of his mistress' son has now been claimed to be 'false'.

According to TMZ.com, porn star Devon James had claimed that her 9-year-old son, Austin T. James, is the result of her affair with Woods, and a DNA test had been performed eight years ago as part of "an ongoing child support battle".

But now a source, who is close to 29-year-old James, has insisted that the paternity test was "false".

"The DNA test done in 2001 was on a man who is a white guy, a complete white guy," the New York Daily News quoted the source as saying.

"His name is Matt. The test showed he is not the father, and Tiger has never taken a DNA test," the source added.

Electrifying India-Pak face off in offing

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 02:51 PM

It will be a battle of attrition when arch rivals India and Pakistan resume their high-voltage cricketing rivalry after eight months in an Asia Cup match.

The battle lines have been drawn for what is regarded as most sought-after match in world cricket, which dwarfs the interest evinced even in the Ashes series between England and Australia.

Though the wicket is not ideal for an ODI, it should produce an electrifying contest as Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Shahid Afridi's men fight for supremacy at the Rangiri Dambulla international stadium.

The last time the teams met across the square, Pakistan had the measure of India in the Champions Trophy in South Africa last September and Dhoni's legion would be aching for revenge.

Pakistan are known to be dangerously volatile when put in a do-or-die situation, as is the situation now after they lost their first match to Sri Lanka.

A determined and aggressive Afridi could spoil India's party if he cuts loose in the middle, as he did against the Lankans.

The Akmal brothers, Umar and Kamran, are immensely capable of turning the match on its head when the chips are down. Salman Butt and Shoaib Malik also have the reputation to destroy any attack on their day.

But man to man, India have a superior batting unit. Unlike Pakistan, India have a deep batting line-up, with Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan capable of pulling their side out of crisis.

But it will be interesting to see how Virender Sehwag responds to the Pakistan challenge. On return from a shoulder injury, he made 11 against Bangladesh, struggling to move back and across the stumps during his 14-ball tenure at the square.

Gautam Gambhir worked hard for his 82 against Bangladesh, but would carry the confidence of spending time in the middle into the game against Pakistan.

A determined Dhoni was also among the runs (38 not out in 45 balls). Gambhir and Dhoni's form aside, India would need significant contributions from Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to win this game.

Both teams have a reasonably good bowling line-up. If Shoaib Akthar, who hobbled out with a strained left knee after a practice session, finds the rhythm which had deserted him in the game against Lanka, it would be an intense contest in the middle.

Sutil rues missed opportunity in Montreal

Published Fri, Jun 18 10 02:21 PM

Silverstone (UK), Jun 18 (PTI) Force India driver Adrian Sutil is still rankled by the missed opportunity in Montreal where, he reckons, a top five finish was well within the realm of possibility but for the contact with Robert Kubica which left him with a punctured tyre. Sutil started ninth on the grid and had an exciting duel with Kubica when the Renault driver suddenly pitted his car, not before a contact with Sutil''s VJM03 which left the German with a puncture. Kubica got a reprimand for the incident but that cost Sutil his race as the Force India driver had to pit his car even though finishing 10th meant he still got a point. "We missed out on a big chance. It was not our fault, but still we missed a big chance" rued Sutil, recalling the race in which team mate Vitantonio Liuzzi also had his share of misfortune after an opening lap tangle with Ferrari''s Felipe Massa necessitated an early pit for the Italian who eventually bagged two points courtesy his ninth place finish. "I think position five or six was possible, certainly sixth behind (Red Bull''s) Mark Webber. The pace was good, we knew that after qualifying, so it was a little bit disappointing. But we can be happy that both cars finished in the points," said Sutil. Recalling coming into contact with Kubica, Sutil said, "I was trying to pass him, but I didn''t know that he was going into the pits. He suddenly backed off. He was right behind me, and I thought, ''Good I''ve gained a position.'' "I was braking as normal before the chicane, and suddenly he came flying down the inside. I thought he''d missed his braking point and was trying to get the position back. But then he pulled into the pits, and I was wondering, ''What did he do?''. "He touched me slightly on the rear right tyre and I got a puncture. Within 200m the pressure dropped down, and under braking for the first corner I lost the car and went straight. That manoeuvre ended my race," lamented the German. "I was so unlucky, because I had to do the whole lap with a punctured tyre. I lost around 20 seconds, and it did huge damage to the floor. There was no real floor left on that side, to be honest. "And then I just had to race as it was. I still did a good race, and could fight for positions. It was tough, but I got a point in the end," he said. Looking ahead to next week''s European Grand Prix, Sutil said, "Last year we were quite good in Valencia. I finished 10th and the car should go pretty well there again, but it''s a bit different to Montreal, where you have longer straights and just chicanes. You need a bit more downforce in Valencia. But it should still suit our car." PTI AY PM

Hopes helps 'unconvincing' Aussies' to 39-run win against Ireland

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 02:07 PM

Clontarf (Ireland), June 18(ANI): A career-best five-wicket haul by Australian all-rounder James Hopes led the Aussies to an unconvincing 39-run victory over Ireland in their one-day international in Clontarf, Ireland.

Chasing a target of 232, Hopes' haul of five for 14 off nine overs helped Australia to restrict the home side for 192 in 42 overs.

A stunning upset was on the cards when Ireland, who have just six fully contracted players in their line-up, reached 137-3 in the 25th over, but Hopes dismissed Ireland's tail to spare the Aussies from losing to the non-Test playing side.

Ireland openers William Porterfield (39 off 42 balls) and Paul Stirling (36 off 36 balls) thrashed 80 off 68 balls, including 42 from the first four overs, to begin an attacking reply.

Other major contribution came for the fourth wicket, with Alex Cusack and Niall O'Brien adding 51 before Hopes wreaked havoc.

Ireland lost their final seven wickets for 55 runs, 36 of which came in the last-wicket stand between John Mooney and Boyd Rankin, Fox Sports reports.

Earlier, Australian were restricted to 231-9 in their 50 overs after skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat.

Opening batsman Tim Paine (81 off 122 balls) formed the cornerstone of Australia's innings, sharing twin 66-run partnerships with Ricky Ponting (33 off 54 balls) and Cameron White (42 off 54).

For Ireland, Kevin O'Brien was most successful bowler taking three for 43, while Stirling chipped in with two for 34.

Brief Scorecard:

Australia- 231-9 (Paine 81, White 42, Kevin O'Brien 3-43) Ireland- 192 (Porterfield 39 Stirling 36, Hopes 5-14) (ANI)

Fabio Capello bans Vuvuzelas from team hotel

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 01:51 PM

London, June 18 (ANI): England coach Fabio Capello has banned the ear-splitting Vuvuzelas from the team hotel, expressing annoyance over the repeated sounds of the instrument.

Sixty-four-year-old Capello lost his cool after hearing residents blowing their annoying horns until 3 a.m., the night before his team checked in to prepare for the match against Algeria.

Hotel bosses confirmed that anyone spotted with a Vuvuzela inside the hotel premises would be asked to leave.

"England are our VIP guests and we will be making them as comfortable as possible. They will not be disturbed by Vuvuzelas here. They are not being allowed in the hotel and there are none on the premises," The Daily Star quoted a spokesman for the Vineyard, as saying. (ANI)

Atwal off to feeble start in maiden US Open

Published Fri, Jun 18 10 01:37 PM

Pebble Beach (USA), Jun 18 (PTI) Arjun Atwal''s US Open debut did not turn out to be a fairytale one as the former Asia number one, also the lone Indian in fray, stuttered to four-over 75 in the first round to lie tied 66th in the golf major here. The Florida-based Indian had a wobbly front nine at the Pebble Beach Golf Links and his inward journey was no different either, the upshot being just four birdies as against eight bogeys which jeopardised his chances of lingering for weekend action. Atwal, who earned his place through sectional qualifying, was pushed early into the back foot by the bogey-bogey start. A birdie on the third and the parred fourth hole had barely calmed his nerves before Atwal ran into a turbulent five-hole stretch where he sandwiched back-to-back birdies between three bogeys that left him two-over at the turn. His back nine journey was nothing to write home about either. Bogeys on the 12th and 14th hole sent him four-over and the 17th hole birdie was no solace either as Atwal signed off with another dropped shot to join the 24-player huddle in the 66th place. Meanwhile, Asian Tour honorary member K J Choi put himself in Major contention with a one-under 70 that had the Korean tied at fourth place, one shot behind joint leaders Paul Casey, Brendon De Jonge and Shaun Micheel. Hiroyuki Fujita of Japan also started well with a 72 while Korea''s Y E Yang, Asia''s first Major champion, battled to a 73 for a share of 30th position. Reigning Asian Tour number one Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand returned 74 to lie alongside Korean teenager Noh Seung-yul, who is making his Major debut, and Fijian Vijay Singh, who is an Asian Tour honorary member. Among other Asian Tour players, Sweden''s Rikard Karlberg, winner of the SAIL Open in India, shot 77, while Australian Terry Pilkadaris and Welshman Rhys Davies ended the day a further shot back.

Uruguay can win World Cup, says coach Tabarez

Published Fri, Jun 18 10 01:23 PM

Pretoria, June 17 -- Uruguay can go all the way and win the 2010 World Cup, coach Oscar Tabarez said after seeing his team achieve its best finals result in 56 years by outclassing host nation South Africa 3-0 in Pretoria. The South Americans last managed such an emphatic win at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland when defeating Scotland 7-0 and Tabarez on Wednesday said he feels two-time champions Uruguay are finally awakening from a slumber that has seen them in the doldrums for decades. A fourth place finish at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico was the last time Uruguay managed to make it to the semi-final stages while they last made it past the group stages in 1990 and the country failed to qualify for four of the last five tournaments. "We came to this World Cup in the hope that we would do something different to what Uruguay has done since the 1970s. We've never come close to third or fourth place," said Tabarez, who took over the helm in February 2006. "We are convinced that we can win the World Cup. There might be teams that are better than us but we are convinced that we can be a tough rival for any team."

"I certainly can't agree," said Tabarez. "I even laugh at the suggestion that Uruguay won this game on account of the referee because we dominated the game. Uruguay deserved to win this match."

Lakers win NBA title in Game Seven thriller

Los Angeles Lakers' Pau Gasol (R) celebrates basket with Jordan Farmar against the Boston Celtics...

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 01:17 PM

The Los Angles Lakers rallied from a big early deficit to win their second successive NBA championship with a cliff-hanging 83-79 Game Seven victory over the Boston Celtics on Thursday.

The triumph gave the Lakers a 16th championship and a record 11th for coach Phil Jackson as they also became the first team to repeat as NBA champions since winning three in a row from 2000.

As the final horn sounded, Lakers' purple and gold confetti fell from the rafters and Los Angeles players charged the court to celebrate victory over their greatest rivals.

"This one is by far the sweetest because it's against them and because it's the hardest one by far," Kobe Bryant said after he was presented with the NBA Finals MVP award.

"Tonight I wanted it so bad ... and sometimes you want something so bad it slips away from you," added the Lakers guard, who made just six of 24 shots in Game Seven. "My guys picked me up."

Boston coach Doc Rivers said his players were devastated by the loss.

"There's a lot of crying in that locker room, don't think there is a dry eye," Rivers told reporters. "A lot of people feel awful. I think that's a good thing, it shows how much we care."

After dropping two of three games in Boston, the Lakers returned to Staples Center facing a series defeat for the first time this post-season.

The resilient Lakers dominated the Celtics in an 89-67 Game Six victory to set up the decisive seventh game.

HUNGRY CELTICS

A hungry Celtics team jumped out to a 23-14 lead by the end of the first quarter to stun a capacity crowd including Hollywood stars such as Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman and Leonardo DiCaprio.

But the visitors could not build on the momentum and were held scoreless for almost five minutes at the start of the second quarter as Los Angeles briefly grabbed the lead.

The Celtics regrouped to control the tempo of the game and reclaim a lead that they would not relinquish until late in the final quarter.

The Lakers, who trailed by as many as 13 points, picked up their game in the closing minutes and seized the lead at 65-64 on a pair of Bryant free throws.

Bryant finished with a game-high 23 points despite his shooting woes, while Ron Artest, playing in his first season with the Lakers, added 20 in a superb all-round performance.

"I never thought I would get a chance to be in this situation," said Artest, who knocked down a key three-pointer down the stretch to help hold off Boston. "I'm blessed."

Spanish forward Pau Gasol also chipped in with 19 points for the Lakers, nine of them coming in the fourth quarter.

"I can't say enough about the Spaniard," said Bryant, who also missed all six of his three-point attempts but contributed 15 rebounds. "He's a hell of a player."

Trailing by six with 60 seconds remaining, Boston's Ray Allen drained a three-pointer to cut the Lakers lead in half.

After Bryant sank a pair of free throws to put the Lakers up by five, Rajon Rondo followed with a clutch three to cut the lead to two with 16 seconds remaining.

However, the Lakers held on to deny the Celtics their first championship since beating Los Angeles in six games in 2008.

In shorts or suit, Maradona still Argentina's star

Published>Fri, Jun 18 10 12:51 PM

Diego Maradona strutted onto the field at Soccer City an hour before the match and took a long look around, a king surveying his realm.

The beard is graying, he's carrying more than a few extra pounds and his expensive gray suit strains at the seams across his broad back. Make no mistake, though. Even with the likes of Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, Maradona is the undisputed star of Argentina's show.

"I'm giving my everything for the Argentine team," he said after a 4-1 World Cup victory over South Korea on Thursday that all but assured the Albiceleste of advancing to the round of 16.

Whether Maradona can be as gifted a coach as he was a player remains to be seen. But his theatrics on the sidelines are already Oscar-worthy, commanding the spotlight as only "Pibe de Oro" - the Golden Kid - can.

A magnet for attention, Maradona does his best to oblige. As his players warmed up before the game, he chatted with someone at the edge of the field - a few feet from a gaggle of photographers, of course. Wearing only a thin track suit on a cold, blustery day, his assistant was quick to drape a warm coat over his shoulders.

As the team ducked back into the tunnel, he made eye-contact with someone in Argentina's cheering section, smiled, blew kisses and pounded his chest with his fist. When the team returned for the national anthems, as many cameras were focused on Maradona as the players.

But just as he did two decades ago, he saved his best performance for the game itself.

With diamond studs as big as mints gleaming in each ear, he embraced each of his players and sent them off. He tried mightily to restrain himself when play began, jamming his hands deep in his pockets or clasping them behind his back, fiddling with the rosary wrapped tight around the fingers of his left hand.

He has as much trouble containing himself these days as befuddled defenses did 20 years ago.

While South Korea's Huh Jung-moo didn't venture out of a small corner at the top of the coach's box, Maradona wore out a path on the grass with his pacing. Any time an Argentine player was knocked down or penalized, he threw up his arms in dismay - as if someone had attacked one of his children. After one foul too many for his liking, he began shouting at his old foe Huh.

The last time Argentina and South Korea met in the World Cup, in 1986, Huh made what many would consider a reckless tackle on Maradona. The two insist all that is ancient history, but it sure didn't look that way. They shouted back and forth, Maradona punctuating his angry roars with hand gestures that would make the folks in Napoli proud.

Finally, both coaches were told to simmer down.

It wouldn't be the last time Maradona would be hushed. That dotted line designed to keep coaches in their boxes is merely a suggestion for him. He roamed up to the touchline, and all the way over to midfield on more than one occasion. Trying to corral a bull would have been easier than keeping him in place.

At one point, unhappy with what he considered rough treatment of the Argentine players, he went to the side of the box to plead his case, standing quietly with his hands clasped as if in prayer. But the official was wise to his antics and never even glanced Maradona's way.

Though beloved as a player, he's taken plenty of criticism since becoming coach, including his lack of experience and some tactical decisions.

No one questions his passion.

When one of Messi's shots sailed wide, Maradona gestured in frustration and gave the ground a vicious kick. He pulled at his hair after a miss by Tevez, his yelp so loud it almost drowned out the vuvuzelas. However, his joy after any one of his players scored was as heartfelt as the emotion he showed for his own years ago.

Take, for example, Gonzalo Higuain. He scored three goals. Maradona wasn't sure the first one counted. When it did, he turned to the bench, a look of pure jubilation on his face, and doled out hugs and high-fives to everyone before holding his arms up in Rocky-like triumph.

After Higuain's second goal, he practically skipped to midfield before jumping into the arms of one of his assistants. Then he turned toward the delirious Argentine fans and waved his right arm as if throwing a lasso, revving them up even more.

With the game well in hand, Maradona's exuberance wasn't about to be contained. He deflected an errant ball with an effortless back volley, drawing a roar of delight from the crowd. He bear-hugged Higuain so tightly he almost lifted the striker clear off the ground, and he protested a late foul by Messi so vociferously you'd think the refs were Italian tax collectors.

When the final whistle sounded, Maradona marched out to the center circle and, while Huh watched quietly from a distance, hugged every player and shook hands with the referees.

The game may have passed to a new generation of Argentine stars. The spotlight, though, will always belong to Maradona.
