Indian eves out of women''s tennis team event of Asian Games

Sat, Nov 13 10 01:23 PM

Guangzhou, Nov 13 (PTI) India crashed out of the women''s tennis team event in the Asian Games after being drubbed 0-3 by Indonesia in the first round here today. Nirupama Sanjeev, who came out of retirement recently to play for India in the Commonwealth Games, straight away got a thrashing as she was outplayed 1-6 1-6 by Ayu Kade Dwi Fani Damayanti in 56 minutes in the first rubber. The Indonesian broke Nirupama thrice in each set to easily clinch the issue at Aoti Tennis Center. The onus to bring India back in the tie was on young Poojashree Venkatesh but she frittered away a flying start to suffer a 6-2 5-7 2-6 defeat against 337-ranked Lavinia Tananta. After a comfortable opening set win, Poojashree, ranked 521 on the WTA charts, was leading 3-1 in the second set and could have gone for the kill but the script changed dramatically after that. Poojashree dropped her serve in the fifth game and allowed her opponent a comeback as she failed to curb her unforced errors. Later, Nirupama and Rushmi Chakravarthi lost the doubles rubber 3-6 1-6. After getting a bye in the opening round, India''s men''s team, seeded fourth, will play its second round against unseeded Qatar later today.

Balanced bowling attack would be best Ashes bet for Oz selectors: Roebuck

Published>Sat, Nov 13 10 01:07 PM

Sydney, Nov 13(ANI): Noted cricket commentator Peter Roebuck reckons that the Australian selectors must opt for a balanced bowling attack for a successful Ashes campaign against England.

"Over the years, Australia have played their best cricket with a varied attack. It is not in the local temperament to get bogged down or to grind. Now and then the thought occurs to pack a side with speedsters, and as often as not the strategy backfires," Roebuck wrote in his syndicated column for the Sydney Morning Herald.

"Obviously, it'd be foolish to reject the idea outright. If the pacemen are as capable as the West Indian quartet decades ago then the tactic becomes mandatory."

"Facing Colin Croft was a trickier proposition than countering some Guyanese twirler. Common sense has a part to play in these matters," he added.

Roebuck further said that the think tank is well advised to keep all their options open when they name the side on Monday.

"Worries about Mitchell Johnson's form might make the selectors hesitate. He is the most enigmatic of bowlers. It's hard to think of anyone else of his stature who has caused as many headaches in his own camp. However, that is a poor reason for choosing an unchanging attack," Roebuck said.

"Fearful thinking spreads like a cancer. Nor is the difficulty of naming the top three fast bowlers a reason to hedge bets. Five or six bowlers have thrown their hats into the ring. All merit consideration, but there is no cause to cower. Sometimes hard decisions have to be taken," he added.

The first of the five Ashes Tests will be held at The Gabba in Brisbane from November 25 to 29.

It will be followed by Tests in Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.

The tour also has two Twenty20 clashes and a seven-match ODI series. (ANI)

Fernando Alonso and Vettel's Red Bull teammate Mark Webber finished the session in third and fourth place respectively as darkness fell.

"It was a good day in terms of how competitive we are," Alonso said. "For sure Red Bull are still the favorites for tomorrow." The four title contenders were divided by 0.427 seconds.

Dortmund charge seven points clear after victory

Sat, Nov 13 10 05:17 AM

The deadly Shinji Kagawa and Lucas Barrios were on target again as Borussia Dortmund beat Hamburg SV 2-0 on Friday to power seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

The Japanese midfielder and Paraguayan forward have now scored 13 goals between them in the team's superb start to the season.

Dortmund, who have won 10 of their 12 games and have not lost since the opening day of the season, have 31 points and an impressive haul of 29 goals.

Second-placed Mainz 05 can close the gap on the leaders to four points when they host Hanover 96 on Saturday.

"We want to consistently play good football and today we've played a good game," said Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp.

Hamburg counterpart Armin Veh said: "They're a very good team, for me they're the favourites".

There was barely a shot on goal in a disappointing first half and the game came to life four minutes after the break when Lukasz Piszczek burst down the right and pulled the ball back for Kagawa to hit his sixth league goal of the season with a deflected shot.

Nuri Sahin's 30-metre free kick was then tipped over by Jaroslav Drobny as the home team stayed on top.

Kagawa helped create the second in the 70th minute when he set Mario Goetze free on the right.

Goetze found Kevin Grosskreutz at the far post and he teed the ball up for Barrios to score his seventh league goal of the season.

In the last minute Paolo Guerrero mustered seventh-placed Hamburg's first shot on target.

Federer closes in on maiden Paris Masters trophy

Published>Sat, Nov 13 10 04:57 AM

Roger Federer showed glimpses of his brilliant best when he saw off Austrian Juergen Melzer 6-1 7-6 on Friday to reach the Paris Masters semi-finals for the first time in his career.

It was also a good day for the French as unseeded Michael Llodra outfoxed Russian Nikolay Davydenko 7-5 6-1 and 12th seed Gael Monfils knocked out number three Andy Murray 6-2 2-6 6-3.

Top seed Federer lost just three points on his serve in a 20-minute opening set, starting with an ace and following up with 17 more unanswered serves as he lined up a clash with Monfils.

Melzer read his opponent's serve better in the second set but made a big mistake in the tiebreak.

At 4-4 he netted an easy volley and Federer wrapped up victory with an ace and a service winner on the super-fast Bercy sports hall court.

"I can't say it's a relief to be in the last four but I'm happy," Federer told reporters.

"I played a wonderful first set, being aggressive on the returns, serving really good. It was a perfect set."

Monfils also leaned on his big serve and a few inspired passing shots to prevail against Murray.

The Briton, who had finished his match with Croatian Marin Cilic late on Thursday night, now heads to London for the end-of-season ATP Finals which start on Nov. 21.

"I'm going to chill out for a few days ... and then try to get my body right for London," said Murray.

"When you get to bed at 3am the night before a match it's not ideal preparation."

Backed by a loud partisan crowd, Monfils broke early in the first set and looked set for a straightforward win but Murray returned serve much better in the second.

Monfils then broke in the sixth game of the decider and bagged the win with a superb crosscourt passing shot.

SURPRISE WIN

Llodra followed his surprise win over Novak Djokovic by defeating Davydenko and next faces fourth seed Robin Soderling of Sweden who edged past Andy Roddick 7-5 6-4.

The unseeded Llodra produced another fine display of attacking tennis to counter the 10th seed's pace from the baseline.

"It was not easy to confirm my victory against Djokovic (with another win). But I did not want it to end there," said Llodra.

"It will be tough against Soderling because he is a great indoor player and he is full of confidence."

The usually ice-cool Davydenko toyed with the crowd, raising his arm to a Mexican wave.

Llodra however peppered the court with serve and volley winners to set up a meeting with Soderling, a player he beat in their two previous encounters.

"I think he beat me once on the Wii," Llodra joked.

Soderling used his devastating forehand to down Roddick who was on the back foot throughout.

The Swede converted his fifth break chance, in the 11th game, to seize the opening set. The twice French Open runner-up then broke again early in the second before ending the contest with his 18th ace.

Roddick now heads to London after officials asked the players to be on site for the ATP Finals as early as Wednesday.

"It doesn't leave much time for me to get home and back now, does it?," said the American. "Apparently we are available for you people (the media) for five days.

"If you ask nicely we'll be around. We can do coffee or something," Roddick added with a smile.

Anheuser swings at baseball in sponsorship lawsuit

Published>Sat, Nov 13 10 04:37 AM

Anheuser-Busch Inc, the largest U.S. brewer, sued Major League Baseball, accusing the league of reneging on an agreement to renew a lucrative and exclusive sponsorship pact it has held for more than 30 years.

The beer battle surfaced as baseball struggles with the effects of a weakened economy, including lower television ratings and sponsor defections.

In its complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Friday, Anheuser said it entered a fully signed renewal agreement with baseball in April and even swapped congratulatory messages with the league about the accord.

But Anheuser said Tim Brosnan, a league executive vice president, demanded a rights fee "several times" higher after the maker of Budweiser and Bud Light replaced Coors in May as official beer sponsor of the National Football League, starting in 2011.

By the fall, Major League Baseball decided it was not bound by the April accord and could shop Anheuser's rights to rivals, the complaint said.

Anheuser is part of Anheuser-Busch InBev NV. It sponsors 26 of the 30 major league teams and has naming rights for the St. Louis Cardinals' ballpark in its hometown.

Matt Bourne, a spokesman for Major League Baseball, said the league had not been served with the complaint and its lawyers have not reviewed it.

Julian Green, a spokesman for MillerCoors -- the combined U.S. operations of SABMiller Plc and Molson Coors Brewing Co , and the No. 2 U.S. brewer -- also did not immediately return a call.

"Baseball is trying to make room to negotiate a deal with MillerCoors," said A.J. Maestas, president of Navigate Marketing Inc, a sports research and valuation firm in Chicago.

"Losing the NFL deal increases the motivation for MillerCoors to find another sports sponsorship," Maestas continued. "Baseball is a national platform they can use in the summer, their key selling season."

Anheuser is seeking a court order to enforce the April accord, which it called "clear, unambiguous, binding, and more than fair," and to bar baseball from signing up any malt beverage rival. A renewal would begin with the 2011 season.

"A timely resolution is important," Keith Levy, vice president of marketing for Anheuser-Busch, said in a statement. "Major League Baseball remains a top priority for our Budweiser brand."

Jim Andrews, senior vice president at IEG LLC, a unit of advertising company WPP Plc that tracks sponsorship spending, estimated a $10 million annual value for Anheuser's baseball sponsorship rights.

This excludes the "tens of millions of dollars" that Anheuser said it spends annually on Major League Baseball advertising and promotions.

The case is Anheuser-Busch Inc v. Major League Baseball Properties Inc, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 10-08513.

EXCLUSIVE - NBA offers live games on smartphones abroad

Published>Sat, Nov 13 10 03:17 AM

International fans of the NBA now can watch the Pacers and Pistons in Paris, the Bulls and Boston in Botswana or the Kings and Clippers in Kathmandu on their smartphones and wireless devices.

The National Basketball Association is offering overseas fans the ability to watch live games on their Apple iPhone and iPod touch or Android-enabled mobile devices, and will launch a marketing push behind the new service on Monday.

Overseas users of the iPad also will have access to NBA League Pass International, the full-season live-game online subscription service available in more than 200 countries in the next few weeks. The idea behind the mobile service, which was introduced in the United States in November 2009, is to make the NBA more easily available for its fans anywhere.

"What we're trying to do is reach our fans wherever they are in the manner that's most convenient for them," Mark Barak, the NBA's vice president of international development and digital, told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"Overseas fans don't have the benefit of having all of the games in the same time zone and the selection of games that we have here in the U.S.," he added. "The League Pass mobile (service) will expand the content we can offer our fans internationally whenever they want it and on any device."

Global sales of mobile devices using the Android and Apple operating systems totalled about 34 million units in the third quarter, according to technology research firm Gartner.

Many analysts consider basketball the second most popular sport globally after soccer and the NBA said more than half of the visitors to the NBA.com website are from outside North America. Opening night rosters for the NBA, which will play its first regular-season game in Europe in London in March, included a record 84 players from 38 countries.

Almost 10 percent of the U.S. sports league's revenue of $4.3 billion comes from international markets.

The league has opened offices in Africa and Russia in the past year, raising the total to 16 markets, with plans to add India soon. It launched a dedicated Japanese NBA website in 1999 and has since added 12 other versions, including ones in Spanish, Chinese, German, French, Brazilian, Italian, Indian and Arabic.

The NBA introduced the League Pass service, allowing fans to watch live games online, at the start of the 2008-2009 season in 19 countries, and expanded that reach to 100 countries by the playoffs. Last year, the number of countries more than doubled.

Fans who want to use the mobile package either buy the premium League Pass service for $150 or just get the mobile version for $45. In either case, they must also buy the Game Time application, which costs $12.

Zidane made special adviser to Real Madrid first team

Sat, Nov 13 10 01:57 AM

Former France great Zinedine Zidane has been appointed as a special adviser to Real Madrid's first team.

"Zidane will be readily available to the president and coach for all matters concerning Real Madrid's first team with whom he will keep in frequent contact," the Spanish league leaders said on their website (www.realmadrid.com) on Friday.

"He will participate in Champions League events and functions. He will also travel with the team on a regular basis ... and will participate in pre-match gatherings, training sessions and meetings with the head coach (Jose Mourinho)."

Mourinho made an appeal last month for the former Real midfielder to work more closely with the team, rather than operating as an adviser to club president Florentino Perez.

Zidane, a triple world player of the year, retired after being sent off in the 2006 World Cup final.

Wilkins exit was boardroom decision, says Chelsea manager

Sat, Nov 13 10 01:17 AM

Chelsea's surprise decision to end assistant coach Ray Wilkins's spell with the west London club was made in the boardroom, manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Friday adding that he "respected" the move.

The Italian also announced that England midfielder Frank Lampard has suffered a setback in his bid to return to action for the Premier League leaders after a long injury absence and would be missing for another two or three weeks.

"The club made this decision (on Wilkins). I think it was a difficult decision for everyone but I have respect for this decision," Ancelotti told reporters ahead of Sunday's home game with Sunderland.

"I spoke with the players to tell them the club made the decision but... we have to move on and stay focused."

On Thursday, Chelsea made the surprise announcement that former England midfielder Wilkins, 54, had left Stamford Bridge with immediate effect.

No reason was given for the sudden departure of Ancelotti's right-hand man, who began his playing career at the club and was made captain at the tender age of 18.

Ancelotti said Wilkins played an integral role in Chelsea's Premier League and FA Cup double-winning campaign last season and added the two men would remain friends.

FANTASTIC ASSISTANT

"Ray was a fantastic assistant coach, I want to say thanks to him because he was a fantastic support last season and this season," the Italian added.

"He is my friend, I have a fantastic relationship with him and I will have a fantastic relationship with him. Obviously, you are interested to ask a lot of questions about this but I don't want to say any more."

Turning his attention to Lampard, Ancelotti said his vice-captain strained a groin muscle in training on Thursday.

"I think he will be out for two or three weeks," added the Chelsea manager. "We are very disappointed because he was very close to coming back.

"It is bad news especially at this moment when (fellow midfielder Michael) Essien is suspended."

Lampard has been out of action since August because of hernia surgery.

Defender Alex will also be sidelined for Sunday's game with a knee injury but striker Nicolas Anelka could return after missing the 1-0 win over neighbours Fulham on Wednesday.

Pato out for six weeks, withdrawn from Brazil squad

Sat, Nov 13 10 12:21 AM

AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato was ruled out for six weeks with a thigh muscle injury on Friday and has been withdrawn from the Brazil squad to face Argentina in a friendly in Qatar next week.

Pato suffered the latest in a series of problems in Milan's 3-1 win over Palermo on Wednesday.

"A recovery time of around six weeks is estimated," a Milan statement said.

His injury comes as a fresh blow to the Serie A leaders, who already lost fellow striker Filippo Inzaghi for the season after the 37-year-old suffered knee ligament damage on Wednesday.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is now Milan's only out-and-out frontman with Robinho, Ronaldinho and Clarence Seedorf offering options as a second striker.

Pato, 21, is top scorer for the new Brazil side coached by Mano Menezes with a goal in each of the team's three friendly wins against the United States, Iran and Ukraine since August.

The Brazilian federation (CBF) said a replacement would not be called up for the friendly next Wednesday.

Menezes still has Andre, Neymar, Robinho and the recalled Ronaldinho as forwards.

France will sacrifice World Cup bonuses but not others

Sat, Nov 13 10 12:19 AM

France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris agreed on Friday the national team did not deserve their World Cup bonuses but said they were not ready to give up their money from previous matches.

"We never changed our minds," Lloris told a news conference ahead of Olympique Lyon's Ligue 1 match at home to Nice.

"We were asked to give away our bonuses for the whole 2009-2010 season. We thought it should only be about the World Cup. Everyone agreed."

After their shock first-round exit at the World Cup in South Africa, the players promised they would give up an estimated two million euros ($2.78 million) in bonuses, their share of sponsorship revenue which is unrelated to performance.

The federation had decided to divide the money between various charities and amateur football clubs.

"I think there was a misunderstanding. It is a shame because we do not really need that at the moment", Lloris said.

"The situation is clear. Considering the World Cup we did, there is no way we deserve any bonus.

"All the players realise we failed during the World Cup and gave a negative image, and so we all wanted to give away those bonuses to charity."

France's World Cup performance was also marred by a player's strike organised in protest at the decision to kick out Nicolas Anelka.

The federation is also locked in a battle with former France coach Raymond Domenech who is seeking 2.9 million euros ($4.07 million) in compensation for unfair dismissal.

Hamilton keeps title favourites behind him

Published>Fri, Nov 12 10 11:57 PM

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton rattled the cage of Formula One's three title favourites on Friday with the fastest time in practice for the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Briton, the fourth contender who must win Sunday's race to have any chance of winning the championship, lapped the floodlit Yas Marina circuit in one minute 40.888 seconds in a session that started in daylight and ended in darkness.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, the race winner last year, was fastest ahead of Hamilton in the opening session in 1:42.760 but traded places with the 2008 champion in the evening with the second best time of 1:41.145.

The 23-year-old German could become the sport's youngest world champion on Sunday but will need to finish at least in the top two to do so. He is currently 15 adrift of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

Hamilton is 24 behind Alonso, with 25 points still up for grabs.

"I'm really, really happy," the Briton, who was reprimanded by stewards for cutting across Brazilian rookie Bruno Senna's HRT to get into the pits, told reporters.

"We've been hopeful for some time now to improve this rear wing of ours, it's not really been working since Suzuka and so we've not really been able to use it.

"We know that it's got a little bit of potential and finally it's working, so that's a huge plus for us and the car's feeling good today," added the Briton, who said he had been feeling slightly rundown and was on medication.

"I'm giving 120 percent," he added. "I think the car is generally quick...it's still going to be tough, I think the Red Bulls are going to pull out half a second maybe in qualifying but we are closer than we have been, I reckon."

ALONSO THIRD

Championship leading Alonso, who will take his third title if he finishes in the top two regardless of who wins the race, was third quickest after lapping with the sixth best time in the afternoon.

Vettel's team mate Mark Webber, second in the overall standings and eight points behind Alonso, was fourth in both sessions.

Webber, whose team won the constructors' title last weekend, said his car had a planned engine change between the sessions.

"It was the usual suspects up at the front today and Fernando, Seb and I were pretty much on similar times," he said. "The car is close to what we had in Brazil. It's hard to develop a car which is pretty solid already."

With the track doused by a rare desert rainstorm 90 minutes before the start of the first session, the practice times showed that that all the championship competitors were up to speed and closely matched.

Few cars ventured out on the track in the first half hour of the largely incident-free 90 minute session, with the surface still damp. Times improved significantly in the evening, with the only incident Jaime Alguersuari spinning off.

Mohammedan Sporting, which had fielded some footballers borrowed from other clubs, had the edge against the Federation Cup winners initially as Joshimar and Denson Devdasa looked devasting creating most of the raids. As the fourth refree signalled two-minute stoppage time after the end of regulation 90 minutes, Mohammedan Sporting defender Maria tripped Saikat in the danger area and referee Rathin Mukherjee was quick to award the penalty to East Bengal. Even though Sporting players protested the spot kick decision, the referee stood his ground and Pradhan made no mistake in slotting home the ball past substitute goalkeeper Priyant Singh. This was East Bengal first win after they lost 0-1 to Chirag United in the semi-final of the Durand Cup recently. Earlier in the same ground, Mohun Bagan pipped Sheffield Football Club of England 1-0 in the first semi-final of the four-team championship, being organised by Mohammedan Sporting to mark their first win of Calcutta Football Leauge in 1934. Asian Games: Narang battles fatigue to carry Indian flag

Published>Fri, Nov 12 10 09:47 PM

Guangzhou, Nov 12 (IANS) India's ace rifle shooter Gagan Narang Friday battled fatigue to accpet the honour of carrying the national flag and became the fifth marksman to do so at the opening ceremony of a mega event like the Asian Games.

Narang took the risk of hampering the prospects of featuring on the podium twice Saturday in the 10-metre air rifle event. Both the men's individual and team events are scheduled on the first day of the Asian Games competition.

Narang, winner of four gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, and Beijing Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra will be competing in the event, where the Chinese challengers seek to make amends for the Beijing Games, where Bindra won the individual event to become India's first individual Olympic gold medallist.

Narang, the world No.4, was elated with the honour. Narang won four gold medals during last month's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

'It is a great honour to carry the national flag. It is a great feeling and I hope to live up to the expectations in the Asian Games,' he said.

India's only individual Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra had carried the national flag at the opening ceremony of the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games.

Since the 1982 Asian Games, Indian shooters have been flag-bearers in different multi-event extravaganzas.

The late Karni Singh, a silver medallist in skeet in the World Championships, was the flag-bearer at the 1982 Asian Games. World champion pistol shooter Jaspal Rana carried the Indian flag at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Athens Olympics silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore carried the Indian flag at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games and at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Ronaldo holds the key in clash of Brazil title hopefuls

Published>Fri, Nov 12 10 09:17 PM

He may be 34, plagued by injuries and struggling to keep his weight down, yet Ronaldo could still play a decisive role in the Brazilian championship race this year.

The former Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter Milan striker is seen as holding the key when his present club Corinthians face Cruzeiro, where he burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old, in a potential title decider on Saturday.

The two teams are neck and neck on 60 points from 34 games, one behind leaders Fluminense, with four matches each to go.

Both teams are aware that the Phenomenal One is likely to be the decisive figure, despite his modest total of five goals in the championship.

"Of course Ronaldo is different and his presence changes the game...there are players who play better when he plays. We have to be very careful," Cruzeiro coach Cuca told reporters.

With Ronaldo playing the full 90 minutes in each of their last five matches, Corinthians have put together a run of three wins and two draws, recovering from a five-match winless run when their number nine was sidelined.

Conscious of his importance to the team, Ronaldo said he would do his utmost to play in Corinthians' remaining matches as they attempt to win the title in their Centenary year.

He has managed a run of six consecutive appearances only once previously this year.

"I'm going to play for sure but it's clear that the day after each match one's body hurts a lot.

"I don't have the same powers of recovery of a 20-year-old," said Ronaldo, who plans to retire when his Corinthians contract expires at the end of next year.

Fluminense, who welcome back former Portugal midfielder Deco and striker Fred from long injury layoffs, play relegation-threatened Goias on Sunday.

A draw would not be a good result for either Corinthians or Cruzeiro, but Ronaldo sees the title race going to the wire.

"Fluminense are ahead of us but they'll still drop points. That's why we must be concerned with taking ours to be champions," he said.

"Everything will only be settled on the last day."

Security tight as China opens Asiad with a splash

Published>Fri, Nov 12 10 08:57 PM

Guangzhou's Asian Games opened on Friday with a glitzy riverside ceremony and a flotilla of athletes as security was tightened across the city for the biggest sports event in China since the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The extravaganza drew on Guangzhou's rich maritime history and indigenous Lingnan culture in a purpose-built arena nestled on a small island on the Pearl River, and decked out with a water stage, giant screens, fountains and the city's skyline behind it.

In a departure from the usual march of delegations into a packed stadium, some 10,000 athletes were ferried in 45 floats -- one for each country and territory -- draped with fairy lights and dropped off at the island for an athlete's parade.

Fans crammed into the 34,000-seater arena shook red castanets and threshed green Chinese fans as technicoloured illuminations and roving spotlights flashed across riverside skyscrapers.

The promised "dream-like" three-hour spectacle combined 6,000 performers splashing across a flooded stage, flying men, gushing fountains, a ship roiled by waves and 40,000 fireworks.

"It's much better than I imagined," said Sun Haiguang, one of the spectators. Internet microblogs also buzzed with excitement.

"That was a gorgeous opening ceremony ... all my family are stunned," wrote a blogger called Luo Jun on the Sina website.

Goose-stepping soldiers raised the Chinese flag as the stadium stood to attention during the national anthem.

During the parade, rivals North and South Korea failed to march under a reunification flag while an otherwise boisterous Chinese crowd hushed momentarily when the Japanese delegation arrived on stage in a possible sign of recent bilateral tensions.

SECURITY SQUEEZE

Authorities' efforts to safeguard the event -- opened by Chinese premier Wen Jiabao -- meant residential districts in the area were sealed off to traffic and pedestrians, leaving some residents grumbling behind high fences.

"It's a shame of course," said an elderly lady surnamed Chen near a 2.5 metre-high electrified fence. "We can't get closer to the river to enjoy the ceremony tonight."

Residents with views of the river were encouraged to leave their homes.

Regal Riviera, a luxury apartment block directly across from Haixinsha Island, the ceremony venue, gave residents an unusual choice -- leave or allow police to accompany them during the evening show.

Police set up security checkpoints at housing compounds with residents having to swipe identity cards to enter.

"Of course it's a pain," said Ludovic Mieze, a French resident. "But this is China. It was the same for the Olympics."

MASSIVE CONSTRUCTION

As with the Beijing Olympics, organisers have been desperate to depict the Asian Games as a symbol of harmony welcomed by residents of the booming metropolis.

Flag sellers on the streets and a small army of volunteers clad in bright tracksuits reinforced the message, speaking gushingly of the Games and their excitement for the opening.

But state-led efforts to drum up enthusiasm have fallen on deaf ears for many locals, who gripe about the disruptions caused by massive construction, traffic restrictions and demolitions.

Residents at Xian village, a warren of old, squat houses earmarked for demolition and ringed by luxury apartments near Haixinsha Island, spoke of a tense atmosphere in the runup, with more than 100,000 security staff deployed to safeguard the event.

A number of villagers were arrested at Xian village earlier in the year during violent clashes with riot police who tried to forcibly evict residents from homes due for demolition.

"We have no freedoms," said a wrinkled village elder surnamed Lo in the village wet market. "Things are very tight."

A housewife surnamed Chen said she felt helpless against city developers.

"The city cares more about the Asian games than people's livelihood," she said.

Mumbai eye innings victory against Bengal

Fri, Nov 12 10 08:51 PM

Kolkata, Nov 11 (PTI) After their exploits with the bat, Mumbai put up a cohesive effort to dismiss Bengal for 296 on the penultimate day here today and will now eye an outright win tomorrow with the home team following on as they trail the visitors by 325 runs in the first innings. Replying to Mumbai''s mammoth 621 for eight declared, debutant Writam Porel smashed a defiant 71 while off-spinner Saurashish Lahiri gave him good company with a patient 62 to help Bengal amass 296 after they were five down for 84 runs at one stage. Right-arm pacer Dhawal Kulkarni scalped three wickets for Mumbai giving away 92 runs, while veteran Ajit Agarkar (2/56), Aavishkar Salvi (2/51) and off-spinner Romesh Powar (2/63) accounted for two victims apiece. At stumps, Mumbai had already assured itself three points by virtue of a huge 325-run first innings lead but the visitors are expected to go for the kill tomorrow to ensure full five points from the tie. Resuming at 28 for one, Bengal had a terrible start to the day as they lost overnight batsman Rohan Banerjee (3) without adding any run on the scoreboard as he nicked one to Omkar Gurav behind the stumps off Kulkarni. Sreevats Goswami (20) too departed in a similar fashion to Agarkar after adding just five runs to his overnight score. To make matters worse for the hosts, skipper Manoj Tiwary (15) was run out and then wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha followed suit slumping Bengal to 84 for five in 39.4 overs. Then Porel stitched a crucial 70-run partnership with Laxmi Ratan Shukla (38) to steady the sinking Bengal ship before he became the seventh hosts batsmen to fall. Porel struck 13 beautiful boundaries in his maiden 127-ball first class knock. Then came Lahiri who together with Shibsagar Singh (40) held fort and added 91 runs for the eighth wicket in 23.2 overs to take the Bengal score near 300-mark. While Lahiri hit nine fours in his 110-ball knock, Shibsagar decorated his innings with seven hits to the fence. PTI SSC PDS

China dazzles again, mesmerising ceremony kicks off Asiad

Fri, Nov 12 10 08:37 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 12 (PTI) China pulled off another dazzling show within two years of the Beijing Olympics as it unveiled the 16th Asian Games with a spell-binding and unique opening ceremony which had water as the overwhelming theme. The skies over the southern city lit up with spectacular fireworks as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao declared the Games open amid thunderous cheers from a capacity crowd. The major part of the ceremony was held at Hai Xinsha, an island located on Pearl River, the third longest river in China which is the life-giver to the southern part of the world''s most populous nation. Games Organising Committee chief Liu Peng and Olympic Council of Asia chief Shaikh Al-Sabah delivered their opening speeches before Jiabao declared the Games open at the vibrant ceremony showcasing the seafaring heritage of this city. The ceremony set the stage for 14 days of competitions in which over 10,0000 athletes from 45 countries would vie for the top honours. The evening started with fireworks and the 37,000 spectators were up on their feet when 1320 artists from the city''s oldest kung fu school descended with giant LED screens in the backdrop. The mesmerisingly choreographed act had the artists performing breathtaking acrobatics while being several feet above the ground. The LED screens flashed the cityscapes and the artists formed formations to look like eagles flying through the sky. The ceremony was unique in more ways than one as it was not held in the main stadium of any multi-discipline sports spectacle as is the custom. The Hainixia island, which had an arena specifically built for the purpose, was the venue and it sat on a river that snakes through this sprawling city and at 2300 kms is the third longest in the country. With the performing area composed of a fixed stage that could insert and release water and which could be elevated in the water, the stage was set for an amazing display of colour and dazzle that took the spectators'' breath away in the 30,000-seater arena which was completed only two months ago. ICC''s suspension is injustice: Aamir

Fri, Nov 12 10 07:07 PM

Karachi, Nov 12 (PTI) Forced to stay out of cricket for quite some time now because of spot-fixing allegations, tainted Pakistan pacer Muhammad Aamir has described the ICC''s suspension as a grave "injustice". "Suspending us without showing any worthwhile evidence and then retaining that suspension is injustice," Aamir told the Duniya news channel. Aamir, alongwith, former Test captain Salman Butt and pace colleague Muhammad Asif was provisionally suspended by the ICC on September 2 after the News of the World tabloid carried a report that alleged bookie Mazhar Majeed had bribed them to spot-fix in the fourth Test against England at Lord''s. The trio then appealed with the ICC against their suspensions with Asif later withdrawing his appeal. Butt and Aamir appeared before a one-man appellate tribunal in Dubai last month which dismissed their appeals. Aamir said that the experience of appearing before the appellate tribunal had been a hugely disappointing one. "No evidence was shown to us. Our lawyers gave strong arguments in favour of lifting the suspensions, but they (ICC) ignored it," he said. Aamir claimed that under ICC''s anti-corruption regulations if the game''s governing body fails to produce any evidence against the trio by next month then their suspensions would be removed automatically. The 19-year-old left-arm pacer said it was frustrating wait for the trio as it had been more than two months since the ICC had enforced the suspension on them but till now failed to set a date for the full hearing. Interestingly, sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board told PTI today that the ICC had finally constituted a three-member tribunal that would hold the full hearing into the allegations against the players between January 3 to 11 next year. Aamir also claimed that the video footage of the players with Majeed proved nothing and could not be considered as an evidence. He also claimed that Scotland Yard in its initial two reports given to the Crown Prosecutor''s Office in London had not been able to produce any substantial evidence and had now submitted a third file. .

Gerets win tug of war against his own country

Fri, Nov 12 10 06:57 PM

Morocco's new Belgian coach Eric Gerets has won the first salvo in an expected tussle of loyalty with his home country over the international future of two emerging footballers.

On Thursday Morocco called up the Belgian-born striker Nacer Chadli for next week's friendly against Northern Ireland even though Belgium have also expressed a desire to cap the player.

Gerets also wants Standard Liege forward Mehdi Carcela, who has two full caps for Belgium, in the Morocco squad for the African Nations Cup qualifiers next year although the player still has to begin the process to change his allegiance.

Chadli, 21, who plays at Champions League campaigners FC Twente in the Netherlands, is one of two new players in the 21-man squad, but says he has not closed the door on a possible future role with Belgium.

"I will only make a definite choice once I figure out what is best for my career," the Liege-born Chadli told the Dutch magazine Voetbal International on Friday.

He said because next Wednesday's match in Belfast is a friendly only he could still choose later to play for Belgium.

Belgian coach George Leekens said he had been keen to call up Chadli but would now wait.

DEFECTION

"I'm going to leave him along for the moment, but he is welcome to join us. But none must be called up against their will," he told the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwblad.

Carcela, who was not named by Morocco for the trip to Belfast, met Gerets this month to discuss a defection from Belgium to Morocco.

The fact that his two appearances for Belgium were both in friendly matches means Carcela could still play for Morocco but having played competitive matches at under-21 level he must go through the process of applying to FIFA to switch his international status.

In September, Carcela refused a call-up by Belgium for their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Germany and Turkey saying he needed time to decide on his international future

FIFA said on Friday they received no application from the 21-year-old, born in Belgium to a Moroccan mother and Spanish father.

Gerets, who takes charge of his first match for Morocco in Belfast, is one of the famous names in the Belgian game, having won 86 caps for the country and several league titles as both a player and coach.

OCA director general praises Guangzhou's contribution to Asiad

Published>Fri, Nov 12 10 06:39 PM

Guangzhou, Nov 11 (IANS) Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) director general Husain Al-Musallam said that Guangzhou has made a 'great contribution' to the history and the legacy of the Asian Games.

Speaking at a joint press conference held by the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (GAGOC) and the OCA, Husain said there was no major issue to confront with the opening of the 16th Asian Games at a grand ceremony Friday evening.

'I think Guangzhou has made a great contribution to the Asian Games,' said Husain.

'The Asian Games started officially in 1951 in New Delhi with seven sports and now there are 42 sports in Guangzhou. When the Far Eastern Games were first held in Manila in 1913, there were only six countries, and now there are 45,' Husain noted.

'This shows the great increase in the number of athletes and countries, with the Athletes' Village in Asian Games Town ready to accept 14,500 athletes and team officials. Guangzhou has added very great value to the Asian Games and the Olympic Movement.'

The OCA's director general added that the athletes would benefit greatly from the Asian Games, as it would improve their performance in the build-up to the London Olympics in 2012.

The Asian Games will feature 42 sports, including 28 from the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and many of the other 14 sports had made a significant contribution to the sporting culture of Asia, he said.

'Looking at these 14 sports, millions and millions are following and practising these sports in Asia. We are trying to give an opportunity to Asian athletes to compete in their sport and represent their country in sports such as cricket, squash, dance sport and karate. They are very popular in Asia - and Asia is the largest continent in the world,' Husain said.

'The Asian Games gives a platform to the Asian youth and Asian athletes to improve and take this sport to the world.'

Husain pointed out that not a single ticket remained for the women's cricket tournament.

Gazza faces Christmas behind bars after failing to appear before court

Published>Fri, Nov 12 10 06:07 PM

London, Nov 12 (ANI): A judge of the Newcastle Magistrates' Court has blasted former Newcastle United player Paul Gascoigne for failing to appear before the court and sneaking into rehab, saying he still 'faces Christmas behind bars'.

Forty-three-year-old Gazza was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday but he missed court and checked into rehab. The troubled footie legend booked himself into a clinic in Bournemouth, which he briefly left yesterday to get cash from an ATM, the Sun reports.

Angry District Judge Stephen Earl ordered Gazza to re-appear before the court next month and warned him he still faces Christmas behind bars.

"He is not here because he has decided to put himself in for treatment - that's the bit that concerns me. Who's running the show? If he can attend there voluntarily, he can attend court voluntarily," he said.

"This case will be sentenced on the next occasion. Let's be absolutely clear - he will be treated no differently to anyone else," Judge Earl added.

Ex-Newcastle and England idol Gazza was arrested after driving his sports car erratically last month. He had 142mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in Newcastle, while the legal limit is only 35mg.e was warned he could be jailed for 12 weeks when he pleaded guilty last month, the paper said.

He was reported to be vomiting out of the window of his agent's car as he was driven south on the M1.

"Such was the level of concern about his difficulties a decision was made that it would be in his best interests to be re-admitted," the paper quoted his solicitor Stephen Andrews as telling the court yesterday.

He would now be sentenced on December 9. (ANI)

Kashyap, Saina to lead Indian challenge in team event

Fri, Nov 12 10 05:39 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 12 (PTI) Indian men shuttlers sans national champion Chetan Anand will have a tough task at hand when they take on formidable Chinese Taipei in the first round of the Asian Games badminton event while the women too have drawn a tough opponent in Indonesia. In absence of Anand, who has pulled out, a heavy burden has fallen on the shoulders of P Kashyap who would play the second singles against Hsueh Hsuan Yi, the Asian and World Championship quarter finalist, after Arvind Bhat faces Hsieh Yu Hsing in the opener. In between these two ties, Indian doubles pair of Sanave Thomas and Akshay Dewalkar will take on C M Fang and S M Lee, while another pair of V Diju and Rupesh Kumar will face Chen Hung Ling and Lin Yu Lang. World number 54 RMV Gurusaidutt, who has got a chance to parade his wares following the withdrawal of Anand, will have the task of taming 66th ranked Chau Tien Chen in the deciding clash. The Chinese Taipei player has a win against world champion Chen Jin of China during the China Open under his belt. The medal hopes in the women''s team event would largely depend on the form of world number 3 Saina Nehwal, who comes into the Games after winning the singles gold in the Commonwealth Games last month and needs to be at her best when India clash with a strong Indonesian outfit. Saina is to open the campaign against Adriyart Firdasari while Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, who won the women''s doubles gold at the Delhi CWG, will take on Polii Greysia Jauhari Meiliana. Aditi Mutatkar takes on M F Kusumastuti, the 2009 Australian Open winner, which will be followed by the second doubles match between Indian pair of Aparna Balan and Prajakta Sawant and Liliana and Nitya Maheswari of Indonesia. Arundhati Pantawane will play the deciding tie against Linda Venifanetri. The winners of both first round ties would enter the last 16 and this is after a gap of almost a quarter century that India are fielding players in the team events of the Asian Games. Meanwhile, the Indian women''s hockey team, that finished third in the 2006 Doha Games, are to play Malaysia in their opening seven-team round-robin tie tomorrow. The main threats for the Indian women are hosts China and South Korea, according to coach Sandeep Somesh who feels the team has to win against one of these two top teams to entertain gold medal hopes and a direct entry into the 2012 London Olympic Games. .

ICC forms 3-man panel to hear fixing charge against Pak trio

Fri, Nov 12 10 05:23 PM

Karachi, Nov 12 (PTI) The International Cricket Council has constituted a three-member tribunal to hear the alleged spot-fixing charges against three suspended Pakistani players -- Salman Butt, Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Aamir. Sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed that the head of the ICC Code of Conduct Commission, Michael Beloff QC would head the tribunal that also includes LB Siege of South Africa and Sharad Rao of Kenya. "The hearing of the tribunal would be held anytime between January 3 to 11, 2011," a source said. The tribunal will examine the evidence that would be submitted to it by the ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit and also review the reports of Scotland Yard while deciding on the spot-fixing allegations against the trio. The three players were provisionally suspended in England on September 2 by the ICC after the News of the World tabloid carried a report that an alleged match-fixer, Mazhar Majeed had bribed them to spot-fix in the fourth Test against England at Lord''s. Subsequently, the trio filed appealed with the ICC against their suspensions with Asif later withdrawing his appeal. Butt and Aamir appeared before a one-man appellate tribunal in Dubai last month which dismissed their appeals. Sources said that Beloff and ICC''s legal team had informed the PCB of the formation of the tribunal during a tele-conference today.

Over six in ten London Olympics souvenirs being made in China

Published>Fri, Nov 12 10 04:17 PM

London, Nov.12 (ANI): Over 90 percent of the merchandise being sold on the official website for the London Olympics is being made outside Britain.

Of the 446 items for sale on the site, 67 percent are made in China and 18 percent in Turkey, while only eight percent bear the hallmark "Made in the UK", Sky News reports.

China not only manufactures the largest number of products, but the most popular ones - including the Olympic and Paralympic mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville.

Olympics organisers are expecting to raise a billion pounds from the sale of 2012 merchandise.

They are keen to stress that, while most of the souvenirs are made abroad, the majority of licensees are British.

"If you go through each of the licensees they're virtually all UK companies," Sky News quoted Paul Deighton, chief executive of the London Organising Committee, as saying.

One Birmingham-based company, however, feels its specialist product could have been made at home.

Vaughtons made the Olympic and Paralympic medals for the 1908 London Games.

They were hoping to be considered for the lucrative contract of producing lapel pin badges for the Games, which are traditionally among the best sellers of any Olympics.

That contract went instead to Chinese company Honav, who manufactured the badges for the Beijing Games.

"We feel betrayed, there's no doubt about that, we feel disgusted, betrayed," said managing director Steve Hobbis. (ANI)

Stuart Broad could win Ashes for England like dad Chris: Mark Waugh

Published>Fri, Nov 12 10 03:57 PM

Sydney, Nov.12 (ANI): Stuart Broad could win Ashes for England like his dad Chris did in 1986, fears former Australian middle-order batsman Mark Waugh.

England's last triumph in Australia in 1986-87 was decorated by three centuries by Chris Broad, including 112 in the innings victory, which wrapped up the urn in Melbourne at Christmas. Mike Gatting was England captain then.

The Aussies in 1986-87 included Waugh's twin brother Steve and between them they would go on to plunder 5,404 runs and 16 Test tons off England over the next 15 years.

"Stuart Broad is a good cricketer like his father, and he should do well out here, but at this stage I don't think he's a great bowler: he is more a bowler of great spells. There is no doubting his talent, and with his height he will be suited to the conditions in Australia. Our batsmen will be wary because he generates good pace and he is tall enough to find that extra bounce," The Mirror quoted Mark, as saying.

"Broad is probably one of the main danger men for us, and it will be interesting to see how Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke cope with the short stuff if he tries to rough them up. And we mustn't overlook his batting - I have reservations about England's top six, because they are not all coming into the Ashes on a roll of form," he added.road's firebrand nature, and inclination to scatter Aussie timber, is clearly a congenital gift he inherited from his father. Chris Broad was fined 1,000 pounds for smashing his stumps angrily with his bat after being dismissed for 139 in the Bicentennial Test in 1988.

It is a trait the Aussies secretly admire, and along with Graeme Swann they recognise 24-year-old Broad is the bowler most likely to undermine Ponting's attempts to retrieve the Ashes. (ANI)

PCB provisionally blacklists five stars for World Cup 2011

Published>Fri, Nov 12 10 03:47 PM

London, Nov.12 (ANI): Pakistan have provisionally agreed not to select five players for next year's World Cup on the subcontinent as they seek to come clean on match-fixing charges against some of their stars.

Former Test captain Salman Butt, fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer, wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal and leg spinner Danish Kaneria have been blacklisted in response to last month's ultimatum by the ICC, who gave the Pakistan Cricket Board 30 days to take a firm stance against corruption.

According to the Daily Star, Akmal has been under investigation for his role in Pakistan's controversial defeat by Australia in January's Sydney Test.

On the other hand, Kaneria was recently cleared by police over allegations of spot fixing, but has not been offered a new contract by Essex.

The other three are also accused of spot fixing during the recent series in England. (ANI)

Kings XI moves HC challenging BCCI decision to scrap franchise

Fri, Nov 12 10 03:41 PM

Mumbai, Nov 12 (PTI) Kings XI Punjab, owned by a consortium led by actor Priety Zinta and industrialist Ness Wadia, has filed an arbitration petition in Bombay High Court challenging Cricket Board''s decision to terminate their IPL franchise contract. The move of Kings XI comes close on the heels of Shilpa Shetty''s Rajasthan Royals challenging a similar decision of the BCCI in the High Court. BCCI had recently terminated the franchisees of Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals on the ground that they had changed the shareholding pattern without informing the Board or IPL Governing Council. Calling the termination of their franchise contract as a "deliberate and calculated" move, Kings XI contended in the petition that BCCI had taken this decision because they wanted to make large profits by seeking new bids as the value of franchisees had gone up considerably. Kings XI, jointly owned by Zinta, Wadia, Mohit Burman and Karan Paul, had bagged the Mohali bid in early 2008 for Rs 76 crore. However, two recent franchisees -- Kochi and Sahara Pune -- had fetched BCCI Rs 330 crore and Rs 370 crore. BCCI had terminated the franchise agreement of Kings XI on the ground that it was signed by different persons and not by the members of the consortium that had bid. Kings XI has sought a stay on the BCCI''s decision to terminate the contract. It has also prayed for revocation of the termination of the contract by BCCI saying it would hurt the interests of young players of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Vettel would be F1's cheeky young champion

Published>Fri, Nov 12 10 03:17 PM

Born in the same year that Red Bull sold their first can of energy drink, Sebastian Vettel has always seemed a marketing match made in heaven for the newly crowned Formula One constructors' champions.

On Sunday, the 23-year-old German can make the partnership even more perfect by becoming the sport's youngest ever champion.

Irreverent, with a penchant for British humour and the Beatles, there has never been any doubt that Vettel is Austrian-owned Red Bull's blue-eyed boy.

The youngest driver to take part in a practice session, youngest to secure pole position, youngest to win a grand prix -- Vettel has set records ever since he started out with the Red Bull junior team.

He may also be saving the best to last: This season he has taken nine pole positions and won four races and yet remains the only one of the four title contenders who has yet to lead the championship.

If he is to win the biggest prize of all he will have to dash the dreams of Australian team mate Mark Webber but that is unlikely to prey on his mind too much after a season of skirmishing between the two.

Vettel cannot win the title if Ferrari's Fernando Alonso is in third place, however, meaning that he may instead gift victory to Webber so that the title at least goes to a Red Bull driver.

Whether he will is the object of much conjecture and Vettel, who plays the cheeky schoolboy like a natural, is happily keeping everyone guessing.

TITLE TEASER

"I never liked it when my parents teased me for something and didn't answer my question," he said after winning in Brazil to leave himself 15 points behind Alonso and seven adrift of Webber with one race left.

"So now I'm in a good position to tease."

Dubbed 'Baby Schumi', a tag he has long disliked and rejected, by the German media early in his precocious rise through the sport's feeder series, Vettel is far from the stereotypical German.

An avid fan of British television comedy from Monty Python to Little Britain, the carpenter's son from Heppenheim masks his deadly serious intent with a playful spirit.

He has given all his cars female names, this season progressing from 'Luscious Liz' to 'Randy Mandy' after previously racing 'Julie', 'Kate' and taking 'Kate's Dirty Sister' to overall second place last year.

In Abu Dhabi last year, he teased world champion Jenson Button after winning the season-ending race by questioning the startled Briton about his marriage plans, despite repeated denials.

Replacing David Coulthard at Red Bull in 2009 after taking his first win with sister team Toro Rosso, he was asked how many interviews the Scot had sat through during his 15 year Formula One career.

"My guess is that it is probably three times the amount of women he had, something around 30,000?," he hazarded mischievously.

Vettel's boyhood heroes, he told the official formula1.com website earlier this year, were always the 'Three Michaels' -- Michael Schumacher, Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson.

"I wanted to become Michael Jackson when I was young," added the blond racing driver. "It was painful to realise that I didn't have the voice."

New Zealand ride on Guptill, McIntosh as India toil

Fri, Nov 12 10 03:07 PM

Hyderabad, Nov 12 (PTI) Martin Guptill smashed a fluent 85 before falling prey to Pragyan Ojha''s guile while Tim McIntosh was unbeaten on 55 as New Zealand reached 159 for two at tea on the first day of the second Test against India here today. The visitors had decided to bat first after the coin landed in Daniel Vettori''s favour. McIntosh, after a pair in the first Test at Motera, was looking good for a big one and giving him company was Ross Taylor, who came in after Ojha had Guptill trapped in front for a well-crafted 85 that was laced with nine sweetly-timed hits to the fence and a six over long-off. Before Taylor''s arrival, the duo of Guptill and McIntosh, after seeing off a testing spell of swing bowling from Sreesanth during which they were made to work hard for the runs, settled down in the post-lunch session to get New Zealand''s innings back on track. Guptill was elegance personified during his stay at the wicket and his sweetly timed shots were a treat to watch. If the massive six over long off smacked of aggression, the straight drives off S Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan in the post-lunch session were a purist''s delight. In between, the Kiwi flayed into Ojha striking the left-arm spinner through the point and cover region for a boundary before getting to his fifty with a ferocious square cut off the same bowler. The hosts, desperately aiming to wrest the initiative from the visitors after escaping defeat in the first Test at Motera, earlier got off to a perfect start with Sreesanth removing McCullum as early as in the fourth over of the match of the match. It was a peach of a delivery that swung away slightly after landing and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni gleefully accepted the edge from the dashing New Zealand opener, who had smashed the bowler through cover point to open his account, his only scoring shot. Sreesanth could have had another one to his name but for an no ball. Guptill was on his way out after being done in by a typical Sreesanth outswinger but on-field umpire kumar Dharmasena belatedly called the batsman back after confirming with TV replays that the bowler had overstepped. New Zealand needed a bit of luck after McCullum''s early departure and once Guptill was given not out, the Kiwis were on their way, reaching the 50 in 89 minutes. A couple of drives through the cover and square region and Guptill''s six over long-on off Harbhajan Singh were the highlights of New Zealand batting in the first session. New Zealand have made three changes to the squad that played in the first Test at Motera. Brent Arnel came in for Hamish Bennett, Tim Southee for Jeetan Patel while Martin Guptill replaced B J Watling. India have retained the XI that played in the series opener.
