Fri, Nov 12 10 10:53 PM

Kolkata, Nov 12 (PTI) Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly''s captaincy could inspire hosts Mohammedan Sporting as East Bengal defeated them by a solitary goal to enter the final of the Platinum Jubilee Cup at the Salt Lake Stadium here tonight. East Bengal will now lock horns with arch-rivals Mohun Bagan in the title clash on Sunday. Striker Sanju Pradhan shot home from a spot kick in the stoppage time after Mohammedan Sporting defender Sanjib Maria brough down Saikat inside the box. Ganguly, who made a special appearance in the match sporting jersey no 99, showed his nimble touch with the ball during his first 60-minute stay on the ground and even created a chance for Mohammedan Sporting in the first half. Mohammedan Sporting, which had fielded some footballers borrowed from other clubs, had the edge against the Federation Cup winners initially as Joshimar and Denson Devdasa looked devasting creating most of the raids. As the fourth refree signalled two-minute stoppage time after the end of regulation 90 minutes, Mohammedan Sporting defender Maria tripped Saikat in the danger area and referee Rathin Mukherjee was quick to award the penalty to East Bengal. Even though Sporting players protested the spot kick decision, the referee stood his ground and Pradhan made no mistake in slotting home the ball past substitute goalkeeper Priyant Singh. This was East Bengal first win after they lost 0-1 to Chirag United in the semi-final of the Durand Cup recently. Earlier in the same ground, Mohun Bagan pipped Sheffield Football Club of England 1-0 in the first semi-final of the four-team championship, being organised by Mohammedan Sporting to mark their first win of Calcutta Football Leauge in 1934.
