Bengal determined to make amends

Published>Wed, Nov 17 10 06:08 AM

Bengal need at least three points from this match to stay in hunt for a knock-out berth. Assam, led by experienced Amol Muzumder, however, are no pushovers. So, an exciting contest is expected when the two sides face each other in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match at Eden Gardens from Wednesday.

The wicket was slow and low in the last match at this venue. Mumbai batted big and had Bengal under the cosh before they let the hosts off the hook. This match is going to be played on a new wicket, but it is unlikely to behave differently. Toss, once again, is going to be important.

Bengal inexplicably left out Abhishek Jhunjhunwala in their first two matches. He is likely to replace Rohan Banerjee in the playing XI. Medium pacer Sami Ahmed, likely in place of left-arm spinner Shib Sagar Singh, is set for his Ranji Trophy debut. And it's going to be a special occasion for all-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla who will play his 100th first-class match on Wednesday. Bengal, however, have a little worry ahead of the game with pace spearhead Ashok Dinda indisposed.

Assam, on the other hand, will be boosted by seamer's Abu Nachem's return who missed the last match owing to an injury. "Our aim is to take three points," Muzumder said. They bagged three points from their last match as well, as elements prevented Railways' victory march. Assam seem to have lady luck smiling on them.

Australian Ricciardo top in F1 young driver test

Wed, Nov 17 10 04:48 AM

Australian Daniel Ricciardo kept champions Red Bull on top of the Formula One timesheets on Tuesday, two days after Sebastian Vettel completed a title double for the team.

Ricciardo, at 21 just two years younger than Red Bull's newly crowned champion, showed an impressive pace on the first day of post-season tests of young and up-and-coming drivers at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina circuit.

The Perth driver's best lap of one minute 39.616 seconds would have put him third on the grid last Sunday, although the track has got faster with use since then.

"I think I've done quite a bit now in the junior categories and now this is my fourth proper day in an F1 car," said last year's British Formula Three champion. "So I think I'm ready (for Formula One)," he told autosport.com.

Venezuela's Pastor Maldonado, hot favourite to take Nico Hulkenberg's vacant race seat at Williams, was in action with the HRT team and did 108 laps. Compatriot Rodolfo Gonzales was driving for Lotus.

"It was very good because I adapted immediately to F1 cars," said Maldonado, who tests for Williams on Wednesday.

The timing screens were full of unfamiliar names to those who pay little attention to junior series, with drivers from a swathe of countries not currently represented in Formula One.

Indonesia's Rio Haryanto, 17, tried out the Virgin in the morning.

"When I first got into the car I must admit I was very nervous, mainly because there were so many people working around me and watching me," he said.

Antonio Felix da Costa, 19, tried out the Force India as the youngest Portuguese to get behind the wheel of an F1 car.

Sauber had Mexican Esteban Gutierrez, their 19-year-old reserve driver from Monterrey, on track while Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne was in the Toro Rosso.

Russia's Mikhail Aleshin tested for Renault, who already have a Russian race driver in Vitaly Petrov.

Regular race drivers, including Vettel, will return to Yas Marina on Friday to test the new Pirelli tyres that have replaced Bridgestone for 2011.

DR Congo pull out of African Nations Cup bidding race

Wed, Nov 17 10 02:28 AM

The Democratic Republic of Congo have withdrawn their bid to host the 2015 or 2017 African Nations Cups, leaving just Morocco and South Africa in the running, the Confederation of African Football said on Tuesday.

African football's governing body will decide in January on the outcome of the bids but with just two countries left in the running it will only have to allocate one tournament to each.

The next Nations Cup finals in 2012 are being co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, after which the tournament switches from every even year to every odd year.

The 2013 finals have been awarded to Libya.

Morocco and South Africa were serious rivals for the right to host the 2010 World Cup which went to South Africa. Both have previously hosted the Nations Cup, Morocco in 1988 and South Africa in 1996.

Cagliari appoint former Italy coach Donadoni

Wed, Nov 17 10 01:28 AM

Former Italy manager Roberto Donadoni will set about repairing his battered image after being named as coach of Serie A strugglers Cagliari on Tuesday.

Donadoni was sacked by Italy after an uninspiring showing at Euro 2008 and lasted just six months in charge of Napoli last year before being axed.

"I prefer to think about the future, I don't like looking back," the former Italy and AC Milan midfielder, who has signed a two-year contract, told a news conference.

"You learn from every mistake but you must also learn from every victory."

The Sardinians, in 17th place after only two wins this season, sacked Pierpaolo Bisoli on Monday after just 12 games in the job.

Former Cagliari player Bisoli, whose final game was Sunday's 1-0 home defeat by Genoa, was appointed in the close season after Massimiliano Allegri was released from his contract to join AC Milan.

Donadoni will take over a modest squad and has the added complication of not being able to pick Italy World Cup goalkeeper Federico Marchetti, who was dropped from the first team by president Massimo Cellino for asking for a transfer.

Marchetti, who has not played all season, has filed a case of unfair treatment against Cagliari and a league arbitration hearing is set for the end of the week.

Perennial mid-table team Cagliari recently unveiled ambitious plans to build a new stadium in the next two years to replace the decaying Sant'Elia.

Vettel and Webber clear the air

Wed, Nov 17 10 01:08 AM

Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull team mate Mark Webber cleared the air after Sunday's season-ending race in Abu Dhabi, the German said on Tuesday.

Vettel, who won the finale to finish above Australian team mate Webber and Spain's Fernando Alonso, said the rivalry in the team had made both drivers perform better during the season and that speculation about their differences had been exaggerated.

"Obviously there were times when we had different opinions," Vettel told a televised news conference at Red Bull's Hangar-7 facility at Salzburg airport.

"But I think that's normal. When you're running at the same level you're going to get in each other's way and you're going to try to get whatever advantage you can.

"That's all fine and that's how you push each other on. It wasn't always easy. I think the talk we had after the race and after the season was good for both of us."

The rivalry between Vettel and Webber flared at times during the season, with the Australian triggering a favouritism furore in July when he won the British Grand Prix.

He said over the team radio "not bad for a number two" after Red Bull had taken a new-specification front wing off his car for qualifying and handed it to Vettel. The two Red Bull drivers also collided while running one-two in Turkey in May.

"I think we were able to put it all into words quite well," Vettel said of his post-season meeting with Webber. "It would be wrong to say 'What happened during the season was all rubbish and now everything is rosy'. Obviously there were moments.

"But it never went as far as the people on the outside expected."

Webber agreed: "It's not always been easy for either of us during the year but this is normal when you're competing against each other at this level," he told reporters in Salzburg.

"At the end of the season, we are honestly able to show respect for each other's performance, which is very important. Congratulations to Sebastian, he really deserves the title."

Vettel flew to Austria from Abu Dhabi on Monday with Webber, team principal Christian Horner and technical head Adrian Newey.

After Tuesday's news conference, they all went on to the Red Bull Racing factory at Milton Keynes in southeast England to thank staff for their contribution.

Vettel was then due to return to the Middle East for tests of the new Pirelli tyres at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina circuit on Friday and Saturday.

Tocatchaprince proves timely UK racing winner

Wed, Nov 17 10 12:48 AM

The aptly named Tocatchaprince provided a timely winner for horse racing punters on Tuesday when Britons were celebrating the engagement of Prince William and long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton.

The horse came in at odds of 8-1 in the opening race at Fakenham in eastern England, rewarding punters who like to scour the race cards for omens.

"We reckon Kate and her pals popped down to the bookies and filled their boots. She's caught a Prince and we've been caught out," said spokesman David Williams of bookmaker Ladbrokes.

The royal family are traditionally fans of horse racing.

Federer no match for Nadal's athleticism, says McEnroe

Published>Wed, Nov 17 10 12:14 AM

There are few more impressive sights in sport than Roger Federer in full flow on a tennis court but the Swiss great cannot compare with Rafael Nadal as an athlete, says former world No.1 John McEnroe.

Debate rages on over who is the better player but McEnroe said Nadal's only rival in terms of athleticism is his old sparring partner Bjorn Borg.

"The two greatest athletes of all time are Bjorn Borg and Rafael Nadal," the American, still playing on the seniors tour as well as commentating, said at a sports conference in Qatar where he was joined by Borg and Romanian Ilie Nastase.

"Federer is one of the greatest players ever, but I don't think he's as good an athlete as those two."

Federer, who has a record 16 grand slam titles to Nadal's nine, will get the chance to continue his rivalry with the Spaniard in London's O2 Arena at the ATP World Tour finals which start on Sunday.

Nadal, who is fit for the season finale after missing the Paris Masters with a shoulder injury, is already confirmed as the year-end world number one after winning three of the year's four grand slams to leave Federer in the shade.

Five-times Wimbledon champion Borg believes the Spaniard could maintain his dominance next season.

"He's still up there. If he stays healthy and motivated, he can sustain it for a long time," the Swede said.

World number two Federer won his 65th ATP tournament earlier this month win to move ahead of Pete Sampras, although he still trails Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl and McEnroe in overall career titles.

Ashish Kumar, Khade create history, India slip to 9th position

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 11:22 PM

India opened a new page in its Asian Games history with Ashish Kumar clinching the first-ever medal in gymnastics while Virdhawal Khade broke the swimming medal drought after 24 years as the contingent added three bronze to its kitty in an otherwise dismal fourth day of competitions here on Tuesday.

Ashish Kumar made the country's first foray into the gymnastics medals podium with a bronze in the men's floor event but disappointing performances in other disciplines resulted in India slipping to the ninth position in the medals table.

The 19-year-old Khade also scripted history as he became the first Indian swimmer in 24 years to clinch an Asian Games medal by notching up a bronze in the men's 50 m butterfly event. Harika Dronavalli also clinched a bronze in the women's individual chess.

With the addition of three bronze medals to the kitty, India's medals tally rose to one gold, four silver and six bronze. India had finished tenth on the medal's tally in the Doha Asian Games in 2006 with ten gold, 17 silver and 26 bronze medals.

But the failure to win any gold medal meant that India could not maintain their seventh position on the medal rostrum, going down by two places.

The Chinese juggernaut continued to roll on as the hosts maintained their position atop the medals table with a whopping tally of 75-26-27 while South Korea (22-17-25) and Japan (15-34-28) were in the second and third position respectively.

Pugilist Suranjoy Singh also provided some spark to punch his way into pre-quarter finals while the shooters came a cropper for the second successive day.

Suranjoy gave a resounding start to the team's boxing campaign by entering the fly weight (52kg) pre-quarters with a thumping win over Thailand's Chatchai Butdee but the script turned out to be quite different at the other venues where the shooters, shuttlers, lifters, men's football team and the women's hockey team came up with dismal performances.

Indian shooters drew a blank for the second successive day after they failed to qualify for the final round of the women's 25m pistol individual event and finished a lowly seventh in the team competition.

The women's hockey team were handed a 0-3 thrashing by Japan in their second game while the paddlers endured another disappointing day with only the men's doubles pair of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Subhajit Saha progressing to the pre-quarterfinals.

The day clearly belonged to two youngsters - Ashish Kumar and Khade -- for their feats in gymnastics and swimming.

Khade, who topped his heat by clocking 24.56sec, finished third in the 50m butterfly finals with a timing of 24.31sec, thus ensuring that India did not draw a blank from the pool.

Khazan Singh was the last Indian swimmer to win a medal at the Asian Games when he clinched the 100m freestyle silver in the 1986 Seoul edition.

In football, India suffered a 0-5 drubbing at the hands of title contenders Japan to crash out of the tournament after qualifying to the knock-out phase of the Asian Games for the first time in 28 years.

India, who made it to the round of 16 after defeating Singapore 4-1 in their last group match, were no match to their formidable opponents who have won all their earlier matches and have not conceded any goal so far in the tournament.

After bagging two silver and as many bronze medals, the shooters, who provided India with the golden touch in the CWG, put up a flop show and left everyone wondering what has gone wrong with them

The women's 25m pistol -- individual and team -- was the only shooting event which featured Indians today but much to the dislike of the fans there was disappointment in store.

Rahi Sarnobat finished 10th in the individual qualifiers with a score of 577 after managing 286 in precision and 291 in rapid, while Annu Raj Singh came 18th at 574 (288+286) and Anisa Sayyed 26th with a tally of 566 (282+284).

The trio could not make much of an impact in the team event as well, finishing seventh with 1717 points after combining for 856 in precision and 290 in rapid.

In boxing, The 24-year-old Suranjoy, who has won an astonishing seven international gold medals since April 2009, thrashed Butdee 7-2 in his and India's opening bout at the Foshan Gymnasium here.

Fresh from his seventh international gold at last month's Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Suranjoy was as usual sharp in his movement and dodged his rival's attempted attacks craftily.

Suranjoy will now be up against Juseong Kim of Korea who got the better of Kazakhstan's Miras Zakhupov 5-3 in his opening bout.

In badminton, Aditi Mutatkar braved a calf injury en route to a straight-game triumph over Sri Lanka's Thilini Jayasinghe as Indian shuttlers began their individual campaigns at the Asian Games on a bitter-sweet note.

Aditi beat her rival 21-11 21-19 in just 19 minutes after gaining a comfortable 10-point leads in both games.

In women's doubles, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, fresh from their Commonwealth Games women's doubles gold, sailed through against the Thai pair of Savitree Amitrapai and Punyada Munkitchokecharoen.

The Indians were leading 21-13 when their rivals conceded after one of them got hurt.

But the second doubles pair of Aparna Balan and Prajakta Sawant exited after losing tamely to Malaysia's N G Marylen Poaulen and Woon Khe Wei 21-17 21-7 in a 20-minute drubbing.

At the table tennis arena, The Commonwealth Games gold medallist pair of Sharath Kamal and Saha lived up to their billing as they outclassed Husain Albahrani and Mansour Alenezy of Kuwait 3-0 in their opening round encounter.

The Indian duo took just 12 minutes to get the better of Albahrani and Alenezy 11-7 11-4 11-4 and set up a clash against the Korean pair of Jungwoo Lee and Sang Eun Oh.

In volleyball, India spanked Vietnam 3-0 in their final group B preliminary match to advance to the quarterfinals.

India staved off the late challenge from Vietnam to notch up a 25-20, 25-16, 25-23 victory to rise to the second spot in Group B, which is headed by defending champions South Korea.

The judo campaign came to a dismal end after Olympian Tombi Devi and Navjot Chana lost their repechage bouts to miss out on medals.

Competing in the men's 60kg category, Chana beat Hong Kong's Kin Ting Yu 120-0 and Iran's Mohsen Ghaffar 110-0 in his preliminary bouts but lost 0-120 in the quarterfinals to eventual finalist Rishod Sobirov of Uzbekistan.

However, Chana could not capitalise on the opportunity he got in the repechage and was beaten 2-101 by China's Lamusi A. Similar was the story of Tombi (48kg), who won her preliminary bout against Nancy Quillotes of Philippines 100-0 before losing to eventual finalist Yeon Jung Chung of Korea 0-110. Tombi lost to Alexandra Podryadova 0-1 in the repechage.

India made a disappointing start in the sepaktakraw event with both the men's and women's team losing their opening group matches.

While the men's team went down fighting 1-2 against Japan in Group B, the Indian eves cut a sorry figure in their pool match as they were routed 0-3 by Korea.

The Indian duo of Jameeludd Mohammed and Ravinder Redd Sara started their beach volleyball campaign at the Asian Games on a losing note suffering a 0-2 defeat at the hands of their Japanese opponents in their opening pool match.

Shillong Lajong defeat Sheffield football club by solitary goal

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 11:08 PM

Shillong, Nov 16 (IANS) Shillong Lajong F.C. Tuesday defeated English club Sheffield F.C. by a solitary goal in an exhibition soccer match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here in Meghalaya.

It was the local outfit which dominated the game and broke the deadlock in the 75th minute when striker Racy K. Lalremmawia converted a pass from Ramlauha into a goal.

In the 16th minute, the English side got a chance to take lead but an attempt from within the box hit the goal post.

The visitors came close to levelling score with a free kick awarded to in the final minutes of the play.

Twenty-year-old Racy also missed as many as half a dozen chances to score a goal.

Sheffield FC coach Christ Dolby said: 'We were not playing competitive game as we did not want to take risk as the boys are not used to the bouncy pitch.'

'Shillong Lajong played well on the same turf. Once you keep playing in one condition and pitch you are going to perform well,' he said.

Commenting about the refereeing, Dolby said: 'Refereeing here is different than that in Europe, but some fouls that were given here are not fouls back home, so it was difficult for us to adapt to it.'

'Anyway, it is not a complaint,' he said.

Echoing Dolby, Shillong Lajong F.C. coach Pradyum Reddy said: 'When we are bringing in coaches and players from outside and our players are going out, we have to educate our referees to follow world standards.'

'You can't stop the game every five seconds, it only happens in local league. They should allow some physical contacts. After all it is a physical game. You have to allow the game to flow. It is not good for the players and even the spectators if the game is halted frequently,' he said.

The exhibition match saw the referee issuing three yellow cards. The local outfit was reduced to 10 men in the 83rd minute when one of its strikers was shown the red card watched by nearly 20,000.

Meanwhile, German football club Bayern Munich has invited 10 of Shillong Lajong's best under-15 players for trials at Kolkata.

The best players will be given an opportunity to go to Germany later in 2011 and train with the players of Bayern Munich, a Shillong Lajong official said.

Bengal to have edge over Assam

Tue, Nov 16 10 10:22 PM

Kolkata, Nov 16 (PTI) After taking on strong contenders Delhi and Mumbai from Group A of the Elite group, Bengal start with an edge as they meet Assam in their next fixture at Eden Gardens here tomorrow. Bengal snatched three points from Delhi and had to remain contended with one point in their next tie against champions Mumbai. Assam, on the other hand, conceded five points losing their opening encounter against Tamil Nadu but produced a better show against Railways to earn three points. "Assam is a good side. But our aim is to get as many points from this match and we will go all out for an outright victory," Bengal coach W V Raman said. Bengal team management hinted that they would prefer to field the same team which played against Mumbai. But the availability of dependable medium pacer Ashok Dinda is under question as he is down with fever. In case Dinda, who opens the hosts'' attack along with Ranadev Bose, remains unfit tomorrow, then, in all probability, Md. Sami will replace him to make his debut in the Ranji league. Bengal will also depend a lot on offy Sourashish Lahiri, left arm spinner Shiv Sagar Singh and Laxmi Ratan Shukla in the bowling department. Bengal has a good batting line up in openers Srivatsa Goswami and Arindam Das and skipper Manoj Tiwari. These apart, the hosts also have Wriddhiman Saha, Writam Porel and allrounder Shukla to add to their batting strength. Tiwari said the match against Mumbai where they could get only one point, was a matter of the past. "We have to look forward and try to get maximum points from this match." Led by former Mumbai skipper Amol Muzumdar, Assam who got promoted from Plate group to Elite this season, were likely to pose a strong challenge to Bengal. Besides S Sriram and Dhiraj Jadhav, imports from Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra respectively, the north eastern state also have dependable opening batsmen in Dhiraj Yadhav and Pervez Aziz. Dhiraj Goswami, who opens Assam bowling attack, is in fine form. The visitors also have a fine off-spinner in Arlene Kanwar. Assam captain Amol Muzumdar expressed cautious optimism about the tie. "Bengal is a very good side. But we will try our best to maintain the momentum we have earned against the Railways in our last match in Delhi." PTI COR NN ATK

Ashes: Oz selectors have avoided difficult decision for another week

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 09:08 PM

Sydney, Nov.16 (ANI): A former Australian cricketer has sarcastically said that the selectors should have named all 66 Sheffield Shield players in the Ashes squad after they announced a bulging preliminary squad of 17 for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, however, the selectors Andrew Hilditch, Greg Chappell, David Boon and Jamie Cox have avoided the difficult decisions for another week.

The paper describes as ridiculous to choose the Ashes squad before the coming Shield games.

The SMH quoted Hilditch as saying: "They're a chance to come in if we make a decision we need to change the side. But you don't change the side unless you can make it better."

Nathan Hauritz faces the greatest challenge to retain his spot after Tasmania's Xavier Doherty was called into the Test squad for the first time.

Clearly, Steve Smith is no longer the second-choice spin option.

Hilditch said: "I think he's going to try and nail his spot as a batter who bowls leg spin for us. I think that's where he would like to be and I think that's probably where we would like him to be too."

Australian captain Ricky Ponting said: "There's no doubt there's a bit of competition around for a few spots in our side as well, which I think is always healthy. It's important for all of us to lift, that's what we have to do. If we want to achieve results as a team we need good solid contributions from all of our players." (ANI)

Arthur replies to PCB's legal notice, denies making any match-fixing claims against Pak

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 08:52 PM

Lahore, Nov 16 (ANI): Former South Africa cricket coach Mickey Arthur, replying to the Pakistan Cricket Board's legal notice, has denied making any match-fixing accusations against the Pakistan side.

Last Monday, the PCB had sent a notice to Arthur, asking him to "unconditionally and publicly retract" his statements, which suggested that the final ODI between Pakistan and South Africa in the 2007-08 series had "a strong suspicion of match-fixing" around it, the Daily Times reported.

The board had also asked him for an "unqualified and unconditional apology," and a proposal for paying them a "substantial sum" in damages.

Arthur's comments, the board concluded, had been made to boost sales of his forthcoming autobiography, which is apparently set to include similar claims.

The board specifically asked for a written undertaking that Arthur's autobiography will not contain similar statements against the side.

"Arthur has requested us to read his book," a PCB official said on Monday. "We will decide further legal action after examining his book."

Last month, Arthur had told South African website News24, "The South African cricket team had a strong suspicion that that there was match-fixing involved in a decisive One-day International against Pakistan three years ago and it took some of the gloss off the series win."

Following his remarks, the Pakistan Cricket Board had served a three-page legal notice on Arthur through its lawyer Tafazzul Rizvi for his defamatory allegations against the Pakistan cricket team in his upcoming biography.

However, the former coach had sought to clarify the matter last Monday, saying, "There is absolutely no foundation to this story whatsoever. Quite simply, my comments were taken completely out of context and I have never accused anybody of anything illegal." (ANI)

Khade hopes to get another medal in Asian Games

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 08:38 PM

Guangzhou, Nov 16 (IANS) Virdhawal Khade, who Tuesday became the first Indian swimmer in 24 years to win a medal in the Asian Games, said he is gunning for another medal here.

The 19-year-old made history by clinching a bronze in the men's 50m Butterfly. Khajan Singh's silver at the 1986 Games was the last medal for the Indians in Asiad swimming. The only Indian swimmer to win a gold medal so far is Sachin Nag in the 100 metres freestyle at the inaugural Asian Games in Delhi in 1951.

Khade made up for his disappointing fourth-place finish in 50m freestyle Monday by clocking 24.31 seconds for a third-place finish at the Aoti Aquatics Centre.

'I am over the moon right now,' Khade said. 'Yesterday's result gave me great confidence and I knew I could take my performances to the next level and win a medal for India'.

Khade will be competing for the 100m freestyle event Wednesday. 'I am looking forward to tomorrow and I am confident of a good showing and another medal.'

Khade's coach Nihar Ameen said he lived up to his talent. 'It's a big day for Indian swimming and an affirmation of his talent. I have always told everyone that Veer is a world class athlete and today he has proven his worth.'

His performance will also see him rise in World rankings.

Breitner keyed up for East Bengal-Bayern Munich clash

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 08:32 PM

Kolkata, Nov 16 (IANS) Nostalgia is certain to brim over as East Bengal All Star team, made up of players who donned the club jerseys between the 1970s and the early 1990s, take on FC Bayern Munich All Star team of former World Cuppers in an exhibition match here Wednesday.

The game is being played at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan for a good cause -- the proceeds are to be used for providing education, better health and hygiene facilities and for the economic independence of street children.

Legendary German player Paul Breitner, who holds the rare distinction of having scored in two different World Cup finals (1974, 1982), said: 'We are a side who are not expected to lose any game. We are glad to give something back to football which has taught and given us something over the years.'

The 22-member FC Bayern side, including ex-World Cuppers like Breitner, Andreas Brehme and Stefan Reuters, arrived here Monday night.

'We hope to do something special through the match by being part in such a noble cause,' said Breitner.

To a query, Breitner said, 'Germany can help Indian football by sending German coaches to train Indians and also sending teams to play against the Indian sides over the coming years.'

Brehme said he was looking forward to a wonderful and competitive game against East Bengal All Stars.

'We are now looking forward to the game against the Bengal giants. I am hoping for a wonderful and competitive game as we are also taking this match seriously and out to prove that we still can play football at this age'.

Asked to rate Argentinian Diego Maradona as a coach, Brehme said: 'I have played against Maradonna a few times and he was incredible as a player. It is difficult for me to judge him as a coach.'

The winner of the exhibition tie will be given the J.C. Guha Centenary Trophy.

The match has been organised by NGOS like Towards Life Foundation and Nabadisha, who have been working among street children for years.

The East Bengal All Stars will be led by former international defender Sudhir Karmakar, with celebrated midfielder of the 1970s Goutam Sarkar as his deputy in the floodlight game.

McCullum's double ton earns Kiwis comfortable draw in Hyderabad Test

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 07:52 PM

Hyderabad, Nov 16 (ANI): New Zealand's Brendon McCullum scored a career best maiden double century on the fifth and final day of the second Test at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium to ensure a morale-boosting draw against hosts India.

McCullum, who opened only for the second time in his Test career scored a brilliant 225, milking a tired Indian bowling unit to become only the second New Zealander to post a double ton on Indian soil, after Bert Sutcliffe's 230 in Delhi way back in 1955

New Zealand set an unachievable target of 326 in 30 overs after declaring their second at 448 for eight at tea, with an overall lead of 326 runs.

India were 68 for no loss, with Sehwag on 54 and Gambhir on 14, when stumps were drawn for the match ended in a tame draw between the two rivals for the second time in the series.

Sehwag, however, produced an entertaining innings in the company of Gambhir, before the two captains agreed to call play off.

The two teams now head to Nagpur for the third and final Test starting on Saturday, with everything to play for.

The draw against the world's No 1 ranked Test team, has given the Kiwis a huge fillip, and comes after the humiliating ODI series loss against Bangladesh, that had set alarm bells ringing in New Zealand cricket.

Speaking after the match, both captains were hopeful of winning the final test at Nagpur.

McCullum was named Man of the Match for his scintillating double ton.

Brief Score:

New Zealand: 350 and 448/8 declared

India: 472 and 68/0 in 17 overs. (ANI)

Sheffield coach unhappy with Indian refereeing standard

Tue, Nov 16 10 07:38 PM

Shillong, Nov 16 (PTI) Sheffield went down to Shillong Lajong FC 0-1 in an exhibition match here which saw coaches of both the teams call for flexibility in Indian referring to match global standards. A 75th minute goal by Lajong forward Racy romped home the hosts amidst cheers from around 15,000 supporters present at the Jawarharlal Nehru Stadium to watch their team play the world''s oldest football club from England, who are on an India tour for promoting the game. Having found hard to adapt to the referring, Sheffield coach Christ Dolby said, "I won''t complain, but some fouls that were given here, are not fouls back home. The referring system here is different and it was difficult for us to adapt. It had hampered the play." Lajong coach Pradyum Reddy echoed his tune. "When we are bringing in coaches and players from outside and when our players are going out, we have to educate our referees to reach the world standards." Reddy said referees should allow some physical contact and a transition from the old rules were needed in India. "You can''t stop the game every five seconds. It is not good for the players and even the spectators would not like it if the game is halted frequently," he said. Today''s exhibition match saw the referee issuing three yellow cards and one red card to a Lajong forward. Sheffield FC officials will be meeting their Lajong counterparts tonight to explore the possibility for a tie-up between the two clubs in terms of coaching exchange and youth skill development, Reddy said. The English club had, in August, tied up with the Jamshedpur-based Tata Football Academy (TFA), the country''s premier soccer school, with the aim to impart professional training to TFA coaches and cadets. The semi-professional English side will play against Assam XI on November 18 in Guwahati. They had participated in the Platinum Jubilee Cup in Kolkata, where they were defeated by Mohun Bagan.

Becks' boys tease him over his English accent

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 07:08 PM

London, Nov 16 (ANI): David Beckham is often teased by his three sons because of his accent, reveals the football star.

Although Beckham is now settled in Los Angeles with his family, his accent still shows that he's a London boy at heart and his sons laugh at him saying, "Daddy, you're so English."

Soccer legend revealed he and wife Victoria are happier than ever living in Los Angeles with their kids and said they have been there for so long that their kids have all gone native.

"They've got full-on American accents now but I don't care. It makes me laugh when we go home and we see the parents and grandparents and they are like, 'What's happened to them?" the Sun quoted Beckham as saying.

"The boys are funny. I was putting Cruz to bed the other night and I said something to him and he turned round to me and said, 'Daddy - you're so English'," he added.

The star further went on to explain about his love for native language as he said, "I have lived in Spain, Milan and Manchester but I have never lost my East End accent and never will."

The 35-year-old has no plans to move back to England when his five-year contract expires next year.

"We've got no immediate plans to come back. My contract ends in just over a year and I have no plans after that yet - but things change really quickly," he said. (ANI)

Khade bags first medal in swimming in 24 years

Tue, Nov 16 10 07:06 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 16 (PTI) Teenager Virdhawal Khade made a big splash in the Asian Games swimming by winning the first medal for India in 24 years, claiming the bronze in the mens 50m butterfly despite a sluggish start at the Aoti Aquatics Centre here today. The tall, 19-year-old Maharashtra swimmer took the splash with the second-worst reaction time but was good enough to get to the other end of the pool and touch the pad in third spot behind Chinas gold medal winner Zhou Jiawei and silver medalist Masayuki Kishida in 24.31 secs, 0.14 secs off his personal best clocked last year in the Asian Age Group swim meet. The Indian swimmer, who is based in Bangalore since the age of 15, said he was very happy to have won a medal after missing out on the bronze narrowly yesterday in his more favoured freestyle event over the same distance. "I am very happy to win a medal today after missing out on the bronze yesterday. It would have been better if it was a gold or a silver but I am happy to win a medal in swimming for India after 24 years," said Khade who became the youngest ever Olympian to represent India two years ago. Indias previous medalist in Asian Games swimming was Khazan Singh Tokas in Seoul in 1986 when he won a silver in 200m butterfly. Khade felt he needs to work on his start after being slow off the block. "I had a bad start. I need to work on it. I am better than these guys in swimming and thats why I could catch up. Its very difficult to recover (after a poor start) in 50m." said Khade who is training under coach Pradeep Kumar. Khade, who finished seventh in the 50m fly in last months CWG, said his aim before the Games was to win a medal in every event hes participating in. "My favourite event is freestyle, 50m and 100m. Tomorrow I would be taking part in the 100 freestyle and hopefully I will win another medal. This medal is a big motivating factor for me in future, thats definite, he said. But the South Asian Games champion in the same event also sounded a bit cautious about his future saying there was no money in swimming in India and he wanted to take care of his family too. "In India there is no money in swimming. I dont know how long I can do it as I have to care for my family too. Theres money for games like cricket and a few others but not for swimming. "I can definitely do better than these two guys (other medalists sitting by his side at the media conference) as I am younger. I am hoping I will get medals in bigger competitions, he said. Khades medal made up somewhat for a dismal day for India in most other events on the fourth day of competitions. PTI SSR MRM

'Neighbour from hell' Rooney sends local property prices plummeting!

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 07:02 PM

London, Nov 16 (ANI): British footballer Wayne Rooney is said to be causing local property prices to go down, the reason being that no one wants to live next to him.

England defender Wes Brown had put his house, neighbouring Rooney's in Prestbury, Cheshire, up for 4.5million pounds, but six months later he knocked off 500,000 pounds and asked for a mere 3,950,000 pounds.

"Wayne attracts a lot of attention and the millionaires attracted to the area like to be more discreet," the Sun quoted a source as saying.

The Prestbury property, also next door to Aston Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland, has been kitted out in flashy designs from top to bottom.

Brown is trying to sell the house because he is having a new home built on a 180-acre farm in nearby Mobberley. (ANI)

Hewitts release pics of newborn baby girl in OK! Magazine

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 06:08 PM

Sydney, Nov 16 (ANI): Tennis player Lleyton Hewitt and his wife actress Rebecca 'Bec' Cartwright have released pictures of their newborn baby girl in OK! Magazine.

Their daughter, Ava Sydney Hewitt, was born prematurely on October 19.

"Ava looks just like a little Mia [her big sister]," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Bec, 27, as saying.

Lleyton, 29, explained that the name was a long-time favourite, and added that they had always wanted Sydney as the middle name.

"It's a really nice connection to where she was born and also where we got married at the Sydney Opera House," he stated. (ANI)

'Ajmal's overdose of "doosras" against Proteas failed the purpose'|Sports[Cricket{Dubai, Nov 16 (ANI): Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal failed to weave the 'Doosra' magic like his compatriot Saqlain Mushtaq in the ongoing Test series against South Africa because he was probably trying the trick too frequently.

"Saqlain's success with it in the Tests or in the ODI's was because he bowled it sparingly as a surprise delivery, as did Muttiah Muralitharan later, to pulverise many a batsmen," the Dawn said.

"If only Saeed Ajmal had done his homework or had studied the two great bowlers, he would have been a lot more successful bowler than he is today," it added.

It noted that it is "alright when he bowls a couple every over in limited overs cricket where batsmen, looking for runs, play across the line to falter against that trajectory."

"In Tests, however, it is a different ball game," it maintained.

On Monday, when two experienced batsmen of the caliber of Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla, with their powers of concentration and skill, began to frustrate Pakistan in a record stand, Ajmal's overdose of doosras- after every second delivery- was not much of a problem for them.

'The Doosra' is an off-spinner's mystery delivery, which goes the other way rather than spinning into the batsman. Disguising it as an off-break, Mushtaq would bowl that ball occasionally with the back flick of one of his fingers to baffle the best of the batsmen.

His skill received the publicity it deserved during a match at The Bellerive Oval Hobart in 1999 when Saqlain mesmerised the Australian batsmen, picking up six wickets for 46, a haul which should have won Pakistan the Test to remain in the series. (ANI)

Terry fears injury will sideline him for months

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 05:52 PM

London, Nov 16 (ANI): Chelsea skipper John Terry fears that he may be sidelined for months due to a nerve problem in his right leg.

Terry revealed that he has played through the pain since the end of last season, but now wants doctors to find a cure.

"It is at a point where I cannot carry on with it. I used to be able to make it through games because the adrenalin gets you going and you blank the pain out," Terry said.

"But now there is no decision to make. After games I'm in agony and not sleeping at all," The Sun quoted Terry, as saying.

The possible long-term absence of Terry is a huge loss for boss Carlo Ancelotti as Chelsea lost 0-3 to Sunderland on Sunday due to lackluster defence.

Terry will discuss his options at training ground today and he may fly to Italy later this week to see a specialist team recommended by Ancelotti.

"I'm at my wit's end. I know I won't play against Birmingham on Saturday but beyond that there are no clues. It could be weeks, it could be months," he said. (ANI)

Cyclists disappoint in Asian Games

Tue, Nov 16 10 05:22 PM

Guangzhou, Nov 16 (PTI) Prince Herbert Sara Hylem was the lone Indian cyclist to go some distance in the Asian Games but his effort was still way short of medal contention as he crashed out in the second round of the men''s Keirin repechage here. Hylem was sixth in his heats of the eight-lap race to enter the repechage round along with Okram Bikram Singh, who was fifth in his qualifying round. Hylem ended up second in the repechage round one to make the cut for the final round even as Bikram fell by the wayside after ending up third as only the first two riders in each heat qualified for the second round. Hylem''s campaign ended after that as he finished fifth in second round, where he was supposed to be in at least the top three to make the 1-6 classification finals tomorrow. In the men''s points race qualifying, Rajendra Kumar Bishnoi failed to finish inside the top-12 in the heats to miss out on qualification for the 60-lap race, which covers 15km in six sprints.

Decision on Kochi franchisee likely in Governing Council meet

Tue, Nov 16 10 05:08 PM

Mumbai, Nov 16 (PTI) Amidst indications that the investors group of the Kochi IPL team is not too keen in running the franchisee, the IPL Governing Council is likely to take a call on scrapping the team during its meeting at the Bandra Kurla Complex here tomorrow. The BCCI last month gave a 30-day notice to the Kochi IPL consortium to sort out its internal differences and get its ownership structure in order. However, the investor group of the consortium has reportedly not come to an understanding with the promoters Rendezvous Sports World Private Limited and is likely to request the BCCI to let them withdraw from the franchisee. This is also likely to pave the way for the Cricket Board to have a discussion on inviting tenders for a new franchisee, which will ensure that at least eight franchisees participate in the next edition of the IPL. When contacted, a Governing Council member, however, said that a decision on the Kochi issue would be taken only after the end of the 30-day notice period. "The franchisee has been given a 30-day notice. A decision cannot be taken before that," the member told PTI. The BCCI had last month terminated its contract with the Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals franchisees alleging that they have violated the contractual agreement and changed their share-holding pattern without informing the Cricket Board. Among other issues that may crop up during the meeting are setting of a reserve price for the players and their agreements, deciding on the time frame of the transfer window for the next edition of IPL, taking a decision on floating tenders for rest of the world television rights, global internet and mobile rights. Besides, the minutes of the previous Governing Council meeting, held on September 27, October 10 and 27 are also likely to be finalised during this meeting.

Khade creates history with bronze medal in swimming

Tue, Nov 16 10 04:52 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 16 (PTI) Virdhawal Khade scripted history today as became the first Indian swimmer in 24 years to clinch an Asian Games medal by notching up a bronze but that was the only high point in an otherwise disappointing fourth day of competitions here. The 19-year-old Khade, who topped his heat by clocking 24.56sec, finished third in the 50m butterfly finals with a timing of 24.31sec, thus ensuring that India did not draw a blank. Pugilist Suranjoy Singh also provided some spark to punch his way into pre-quarter finals while the shooters came a cropper for the second successive day. Suranjoy gave a resounding start to the team''s boxing campaign by entering the fly weight (52kg) pre-quarters with a thumping win over Thailand''s Chatchai Butdee but the script turned out to be quite different at the other venues where the shooters, swimmers, shuttlers and the women''s hockey team came up with dismal performances. With the addition of one bronze medal to the kitty, India''s medals tally rose to one gold, four silver and four bronze. India had finished tenth on the medal''s tally in the Doha Asian Games in 2006 with ten gold, 17 silver and 26 bronze medals. Indian shooters drew a blank for the second successive day after they failed to qualify for the final round of the women''s 25m pistol individual event and finished a lowly seventh in the team competition. The women''s hockey team were handed a 0-3 thrashing by Japan in their second game while the paddlers endured another disappointing day with only the men''s doubles pair of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Subhajit Saha progressing to the pre-quarterfinals. The day clearly belonged to the young Khade with his swimming feat. Khazan Singh was the last Indian swimmer to win a medal at the Asian Games when he clinched the 100m freestyle silverin the 1986 Seoul edition. "I am very happy to have won a medal for India after 24 years. I wanted to win after missing the bronze yesterday. It would have been better had it been a silver or a gold," Khade, who finished fourth in the 50m freestyle finals just 0.03 seconds behind the bronze-medallist yesterday, said. More PTI SSR MRM

Beleaguered Pak hockey team will "bounce back strongly": PHF Secretary

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 04:38 PM

Karachi, Nov 16 (ANI): Pakistan hockey will soon revive its lost glory, as the Greenshirts have been put on the right track and will start producing desired results as early as in the ongoing Asian Games in Guangzhou, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Secretary Asif Bajwa has said.

"We may seem to be down and out following a couple of poor outings but let me assure you that team is going to bounce back strongly," The News quoted Bajwa, as saying.

The former Olympian expressed his confidence that Pakistan would do well in the Asian Games and would continue to improve next year in the lead up to the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

"Everything will start falling into place for Pakistan hockey soon," promised Bajwa, who returned home after attending the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Congress in the Swiss city of Montreux over the weekend.

The PHF Secretary revealed that he had a series of crucial meetings on the sidelines of the FIH Congress, adding that substantial progress was made over the revival of bilateral matches against India. "We are expecting to revive our bilateral series against India next year," he said.

Bajwa said that Pakistan was planning to host a couple of international events ahead of the World League Round 3 in 2013 that has been allotted to it by the FIH.

He also said that hockey would be included in next month's National Games.

"There will be no National Games without hockey," he stressed.

It is noteworthy that the organisers of the National Games to be held in Peshawar had controversially axed hockey from the event. (ANI)

Hauritz is Australia's No.1 spinner, says Warne

Published>Tue, Nov 16 10 04:08 PM

Melbourne, Nov. 16 (ANI): Former leg spinner Shane Warne has declared Nathan Hauritz as Australia's No.1 spinner and added that he deserves his spot in the team for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.

"I think Nathan Hauritz is the No.1 spinner, he's got a very good record in Australia and I'm sure he'll get given the first chance, he deserves that," Warne said on Tuesday.

"But if he doesn't do well, someone like Doherty is pushing and Steve Smith is pushing, so there's options and I think that's a good sign for Australian cricket," he added.

"I think for Nathan if he has that mindset, I remember having a chat to him just before Christmas last year at the Boxing Day Test and just being positive saying 'mate, you're bowling well, get some right fields, work with Ricky (Ponting) to get the right fields and bowl to get somebody out'," Warne said.

He added: "If you ask yourself a question, don't ask anything else but 'how am I getting them out', if you ask that, it naturally gives you a positive mindset." (ANI)

Aditi braves injury to enter badminton 2nd round

Tue, Nov 16 10 03:52 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 16 (PTI) Aditi Mutatkar braved a calf injury en route to a straight-game triumph over Sri Lanka''s Thilini Jayasinghe as Indian shuttlers began their individual campaigns at the Asian Games on a bitter-sweet note here today. Aditi beat her rival 21-11 21-19 in just 19 minutes after gaining a comfortable 10-point leads in both games. Aditi hit four smash winners, the same as her rival, and the two were also more or less matched well in net play. But the Indian woman had a clear edge otherwise. Aditi will meet fourth seed Erika Hirose of Japan, quarter-finalist in the World Championship this year, in the pre-quarterfinals. The Japanese got a first round bye. In women''s doubles, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, fresh from their Commonwealth Games women''s doubles gold, sailed through against the Thai pair of Savitree Amitrapai and Punyada Munkitchokecharoen. The Indians were leading 21-13 when their rivals conceded the match after one of them got hurt. But the second doubles pair of Aparna Balan and Prajakta Sawant exited after losing tamely to Malaysia''s N G Marylen Poaulen and Woon Khe Wei 21-17 21-7 in a 20-minute drubbing. Indian coach P Gopichand said it was a decent beginning by the women today. "But the main matches are yet to come," he added. Gopi also revealed that another woman entrant Trupti Murgunde is flying back home tonight after picking up an ankle injury and would miss the event. The Indian pair will take on the top Chinese combination of Tian Oing and Zhao Yunki, seeded second, in the next round and Jwala said that she and her partner need to be patient as it will be a unique experience playing against them in front of their home crowd. "Against China we need to be patient but persistent. I have always enjoyed playing against the Chinese. Playing them on their home ground will be a one-of-a-kind experience," she said. Ashwini said the match would not be easy though she had adjusted well to the conditions here. "I am going to enjoy our match against China. I''ve adjusted well to the conditions here. At the start of my other matches I got a little frustrated and eager to win but Jwala calmed me," she said.

Shooters off target for second day running

Tue, Nov 16 10 03:22 PM

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 16 (PTI) After their cornering glory in the Commonwealth Games and promising start to the competitions here, the much touted Indian shooters drew a blank at the range for the second day running at the Asian Games today with the pistol markswomen way off target. After bagging two silver and as many bronze medals, the shooters, who provided India with the golden touch in the CWG, put up a major flop show and left everyone wondering what has gone wrong with them. The women''s trio of Rahi Sarnobat, Annu Raj Singh and Anisa Sayyed flopped badly in the 25-metre pistol event as the trio failed to qualify for the finals in the individual category and finished a disappointing seventh in the team competition at the Aoti Shooting Range. Rahi was the best of the lot, finishing the qualifiers in the 10th position with 577 points (286 in the precision round and 292 in rapid). She shot rounds of 96, 94 and 96 in precision and followed it up with a better display in the rapid fire (96, 96, 99). Annu was no better as she shot 288 and 286 in the two rounds for an overall tally of 574 that fetched her the 18th spot - 97, 95, 96 in precision and 95, 96, 95 in rapid, while Commonwealth Games gold medallist Anisa finished a disappointing 26th with a tally of 566 points (282 and 284), well below her effort in Delhi last month. Anisa shot 97, 92 and 93 and 95, 93, 96 in the two segments, well below what she is capable of. The best qualifying effort came from Japan''s Mori Yukari (587) but her team finished only fourth. The Indian trio were no better in the team event as they finished seventh with an overall aggregate of 1717, six below bronze medal winning South Korea. Kazakhstan won the gold with 1731, while Mongolia (1725) and South Korea (1723) bagged silver and bronze respectively. India''s chief shooting coach Sunny Thomas conceded the women were totally off colour today and bemoaned that had Anisa shot slightly better and got six more points the team bronze would have returned with atleast a bronze. But Thomas added that Anisa complained of pain in her hand and also took medical help at the clinic inside the range. "Anisa shot 566 which was much below her 585 in Delhi. Had she shot six more points we could have secured the team bronze. But she had complained about some pain in her shooting hand for which she got treated at the clinic inside the range. She took some pain killers and participated," he said. "But I don''t want to tout that an excuse. If it had to happen it happened, that''s all," he said. .

Suranjoy in pre-quarters of Asian Games

Tue, Nov 16 10 02:52 PM

Guangzhou, Nov 16 (PTI) Suranjoy Singh gave a resounding start to India''s campaign in the Asian Games boxing event by entering the fly weight (52kg) pre-quarterfinals with a thumping win over Thailand''s Chatchai Butdee here today. The 24-year-old Manipuri, who has won an astonishing seven international gold medals since April 2009, thrashed Butdee 7-2 in his and India''s opening bout at the Foshan Gymnasium here. Fresh from his seventh international gold at last month''s Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Suranjoy was as usual sharp in his movement and dodged his rival''s attempted attacks craftily. In the opening three minutes, Suranjoy took a measure of his rival and in between notched up a point through a left hook to take the edge. In the second round too, the Indian was not too aggressive and waited for Butdee to make the first move before striking hard on counter-attack to pocket two more points. Butdee, a South East Asian Games gold-medallist, went for all out attack in the final three minutes but Suranjoy took full advantage of the Thai''s dodgy defence to score through uppercuts and body punches. "I didn''t go all out in this fight. My body is always a bit stiff when I start out in a competition and it was the same today but in the end it was not too tough for me," Suranjoy told PTI. "I was slightly laid back in the final round and that is why I got hit twice, otherwise I would have kept the slate clean," he added. Suranjoy will now be up against Juseong Kim of Korea who got the better of Kazakhstan''s Miras Zakhupov 5-3 in his opening bout. "I have recorded his bout and will work out a strategy with my coaches," Suranjoy said when asked about his next bout. Tomorrow, two Indian boxers, including Olympic and World Championships bronze medallist Vijender Singh (75kg), will be in action. World number one Vijender, who won a bronze medal at the 2006 Doha Asian Games, will take on Yu Ting Yang of Chinese Taipei. World Youth champion Vikas Krishan (60kg) would be the other Indian boxer kicking off his campaign tomorrow. The 18-year-old, who won a bronze medal at the Youth Olympics in August, will be squaring off against Thailand''s Saylom Ardee in his Games opener. Ardee is a gold medallist from the prestigious King''s Cup hosted annually by Thailand.
