Injured Pietersen ruled out of ODI series against Bangladesh

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 12:22 PM

London, Jul 4 (ANI): England batsman Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of the one-day series against Bangladesh after picking up a thigh injury during fifth ODI against Australia on Saturday.

Pietersen picked the injury while fielding, and was then out for a four-ball duck when he batted with a runner in England's run-chase at Lord's.

The series against Bangladesh starts on Thursday, but Pietersen's biggest worry is being fit for the four Tests against Pakistan, which begins on July 29.

"Kevin has a quad strain so it is highly unlikely he'll be fit. But we're not going to rule him out at this stage," News of the World quoted skipper Andrew Strauss, as saying.

Despite England crashing to a second straight loss against archrivals Australia, they won the series 3-2, a real confidence booster ahead of the Ashes.

Strauss said: "I'm disappointed we lost the last two one-dayers as we were in a good position to assert some supremacy over Australia. We weren't able to do that but we have won a series against the world's No 1 team and that is something we should be very proud of in a five-match series."

"Australia's one-day record in the last 12 months has been outstanding and they came back at us very hard, which we expected. We haven't been as consistent in the last 12 to 18 months and that is something we are trying to remedy," he said.

"People try to turn this into an Ashes battle. It is very much to do with one-day cricket, the World Cup and improving. We're not the finished article in one-dayers but, over five games, there are far more positives to take," Strauss added. (ANI)

* Williams is sixth on the list of female grand slam title winners.

* Is one of only five women, after Maureen Connolly, Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf, to hold all four grand slam titles at same time. The non-calendar year achievement in 2002-03 was dubbed the 'Serena Slam'. She beat sister Venus in each of the four finals.

* She also owns 12 women's grand slam doubles titles with sister Venus.

OTHER CAREER MILESTONES

* In 1997 became lowest-ranked player to defeat two top-10 players in one tournament, number seven Mary Pierce and number four Monica Seles, after entering Chicago event as a 304th-ranked wildcard.

Serena had to overcome a hostile crowd to beat Belgium's Kim Clijsters in the final, being jeered by fans who were upset Venus had withdrawn from semi-final against her younger sister two days earlier. Ever since the siblings have had to quell media speculation the move was hatched by their father and coach, Richard.

* Her sister Yetunde Price was killed in a shooting incident in Los Angeles in 2003.

* Lost controversial quarter-final to fellow American Jennifer Capriati at the 2004 U.S. Open after being upset by a series of line calls which TV replays showed were wrong. Incident sets wheels in motion for instant replay technology to be introduced.

FOUL-MOUTHED TIRADE

* Williams launched an expletive-laced rant at an official who called her for a foot-fault in 2009 U.S. Open semi-final against eventual champion Kim Clijsters.

* Organisers fined her $10,500, the biggest given to a female player since records began in 1990, at the end of the tournament for her unsportsmanlike behaviour.

* On top of fine of $175,000, which includes the smaller fine she received at the time, the Grand Slam Committee says on Nov. 30 that any further major offence at a grand slam in the next two years would see her suspended from the U.S. Open in 2010, 2011 or 2012.

Atwal slips to tied 20th after Rd 3 of AT&T Nationals

Published Sun, Jul 04 10 11:56 AM

Pennsylvania (USA), Jul 4 (PTI) Arjun Atwal failed to break par for the second successive day and settled for a modest one-over 71 to slip six rungs to tied 20th after the penultimate round of the AT&T Nationals golf tournament here. Playing on a sponsor''s exemption courtesy good friend and practice partner Tiger Woods, the Orlando-based Indian, who led the pack after the opening round, totals one-under 209 in three rounds. It was a largely uneventful day for Atwal and he closed the front nine even-par after slotting one birdie against a bogey. Atwal failed to fetch any birdie in the back nine and ended up dropping a stroke on the 11th hole to round off another over-par day. Englishman Justin Rose led by a formidable four strokes after 67 in the third round left 10-under 200 overall. Swede Carl Pettersson (65) and Charlie Wi (70) occupied the second spot.

Tait's blitz flattens England as Australia register 42 run win in last ODI

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 11:38 AM

London, July 45 (ANI): Riding on Shaun Tait's 'lighting fast' spell, Australia defeated England by 42 runs in the fifth and last one-day international at Lord's here thus reducing the hosts' series-winning margin to 3-2.

Chasing 278, England never looked like achieving the target as they were rocked by Tait's double blow early in the innings.

England were bowled out for 235 despite Paul Collingwood's fearless 95.

Tait was declared man-of-the-match for his fiery spell of four for 48 in 8.3 overs.

After being reduced to 73 for five, England were staring at a humiliating loss in the final match of the series, which they had already pocketed, but Collingwood along with Luke Wright shared a 56 run partnership to resurrect the damage.

After Wright's dismissal, Tim Bresnan joined Collingwood to steady the ship.

Both shared a 65-run partnership. England needed 85 runs in the last 10 overs to register a thrilling win over the Kangaroos, but lady luck had other ideas.

Bresnan was run out on 34 by Ricky Ponting's marvellous direct throw.

The hero of the match for Australia, Tait, then nailed the final blow two balls later dismissing Collingwood to end his 121-ball sojourn, which featured two sixes and seven fours.

Tait bowled fast and with aggression clocking over 100mph in the very first over of his match winning spell, and even England captain Andrew Strauss admitted that his batsmen had no answers to his blitz.

"Tait was pretty quick and he got the ball swinging. It was up there with spells I've faced from Shoaib Akhtar and Brett Lee," said Strauss.

Earlier, left handers Michael Hussey (79) and Shaun Marsh (59) shared a fifth-wicket stand of 107 between them which revived the world champions' after being reduced to 106 for four.

For England, Stuart Broad finished with figures of four for 64 off his 10 overs, while off-spinner Graeme Swann was also amongst wickets taking three for 32 in his eight overs. (ANI)

The statement appeared on the Real Madrid footballer's official site, and on his Twitter and Facebook pages, in the early hours of this morning, reports News of the World.

The message on Ronaldo's Internet page does not name the mother, but says the child will be under his 'guardianship'.

It was unclear whether the statement was genuine or the work of a hoaxer.

It says: "It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become father to a baby boy.

"As agreed with the baby's mother, who prefers to have her identity kept confidential, my son will be under my exclusive guardianship."

Ronaldo, 25, has recently been linked to 24-year-old Russian swimwear model Irina Shayk. (ANI)

Germany oust Argentina, Spain reach semis

Germany's Miroslav Klose scores a goal during a 2010 World Cup quarter-final soccer match against...

Published>Sun, Jul 04 10 10:36 AM

Germany demolished Argentina and Spain beat Paraguay by one goal in a quarter-final

of extraordinary drama on Saturday as Europe took revenge on Latin America to dominate the World Cup.

The results mean three European sides and Uruguay will contest next week's semi-finals. South America had dominated the early stages of the World Cup, while soccer powers England, holders Italy and France were all humbled.

Germany's 4-0 crushing of Diego Maradona's side was the second time in two days that a European power had sent home one of the two Latin American favourites, following the Netherlands' shock defeat of Brazil on Friday.

Spain had to fight long and hard against a tough Paraguay before Spanish hitman David Villa, the tournament's top scorer, took the only goal -- his fifth of the tournament -- in the 83rd minute after substitute Pedro's effort bounced off an upright.

Earlier both sides missed penalties in a frantic spell in the second half. Spanish keeper Iker Casillas saved Oscar Cardozo's penalty and three minutes later Xabi Alonso's first try for Spain was disallowed for encroachment. Paraguayan keeper Justo Villar saved the second.

In the semi-finals Spain will face Germany, who handed Argentina their worst World Cup defeat in 52 years, outplaying them all over the pitch despite the presence of World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, who was mostly stifled by defenders.

Germany and Spain will play in Durban on Wednesday while Uruguay face the Netherlands on Tuesday in Cape Town.

The extraordinary World Cup shake-up came as millions of Africans continued to mourn the controversial elimination of their last hope, Ghana, by Uruguay on Friday.

The Ghanaians were robbed by a cruel, some said unfair, turn of fate from becoming the first continental nation to reach the semi-finals after being beaten by Uruguay on penalties.

A Luis Suarez handball on the goalline in the dying seconds of extra-time was all that denied Ghana a place in the last four after they failed to convert the resulting spot-kick and then lost the penalty shootout.

TEARFUL AFRICANS

Africans called radio phone-in shows to say Suarez had cheated, echoing the tearful comment by defender John Pantsil after the game: "It was not a penalty, it was a goal, because he (Suarez) was the last man on the goalline and he saved the ball with the hands."

Emotions were naturally the opposite across the Atlantic where Uruguayan media celebrated "the hands of Luis Suarez".

Tens of thousands took to the streets of Montevideo to cheer their best World Cup run in 40 years, although Suarez will miss the semi-final after being red carded for the handball.

The outcome sparked a new debate about whether FIFA should change the rules and introduce a system similar to rugby where referees can award a penalty try.

A broken Maradona said Argentina's thrashing was the hardest day of his life.

"Today, close to the 50 years I will be on October 30, this is the hardest thing I've experienced...This was (like) a punch from Muhammad Ali. I have no strength for anything."

Germany shocked the Argentines with a third minute goal from Thomas Mueller and scored three times in the second half -- twice through Miroslav Klose and once from Arne Friedrich.

German coach Joachim Loew said he believed his young team could win the trophy for the first time in 20 years. Chancellor Angela Merkel, who enthusiastically cheered from the stands during the match, said: "It's overwhelming, it's a dream."

Celebrations erupted throughout Germany and more than 350,000 fans watched at a fan park in Berlin.

Even the German players seemed stunned by the extent of their victory. "It's insane to beat Argentina 4-0," said Mueller, whose yellow card may mean he misses the semi.

Messi had been one of the most eagerly awaited players in Africa's first World Cup but never scored during the tournament.

The successive defeats of Argentina and Brazil led British bookies to make Germany, Spain and Netherlands joint favourites to win the tournament.

Dhoni gets engaged to school friend Sakshi

Published Sun, Jul 04 10 12:12 AM

Dehradun/Ranchi, July 3 (PTI) Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today got engaged to his childhood friend Sakshi Singh Rawat at a private function in a hotel in Dehradun with just family members and close friends present. The marriage is likely to take place after India''s home series against Australia in October. The engagement for Dhoni, one of India''s most successful captain, comes just four days before his 29th birthday. "Dhoni and his school friend Sakshi got engaged at Hotel Bhagirath in Dehradun," a close family friend told PTI in Ranchi. "Besides the family members of Dhoni, a few close friends of the cricketer were present during the engagement ceremony," he added. Dhoni''s engagement was kept a closely guarded secret and sources said that none of his cricketer friends and other celebrities was present. It was only late in the night that the news of his engagement broke. Dhoni and Sakshi, who hails from Aurangabad, had been school friends at DAV, Shamily in Ranchi. "Their fathers worked together in MECON, and the Rawats moved to Dehradun after retirement," the friend said. Asked whether any date for marriage has been fixed, he said, "not yet, may be after the Australian series." The Indian captain is currently enjoying a rare break with the next three-Test series against Sri Lanka scheduled to begin from July 18 at Galle. The Indian team will play a warm-up game before that. Dhoni, who made his international debut against Bangladesh in December 2004, has so far played 43 Tests, 166 ODIs and 25 T20s. Under his captaincy, India won the 2007 ICC World Cup Twenty20, CB Series of 200708, and the Border-Gavaskar trophy 2008 in which they beat Australia 20. He also captained Chennai Super Kings to victory in the recent IPL 2010. He is now captain of India in all three forms of the game and also led the team to their first ever bilateral ODI series wins in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Under his charismatic leadership, India attained the number one status in Test cricket and managed to be the number two this year in ODI rankings. Dhoni has also been the recipient of many awards including the ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2008 and 2009 (the first Indian player to achieve this feat), the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award and the Padma Shri, India''s fourth highest civilian honour in 2009.

German exposed our weakness, left us naked: Argentine media

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 11:58 PM

Buenos Aires, July 3 (DPA) The Argentine press showed no mercy as Diego Maradona's team were knocked out of the World Cup. 'We crashed into a very solid Germany' said Ole. La Nacion added: 'They exposed our weaknesses, leaving us naked.'

'Sweat and Tears' was the daily sports paper Ole's online headline. 'This time it was worse than being beaten by them four years ago because they scored so early and Diego (Maradona) had no answer,' it added.

La Nacion said: 'The Germans beat us 4-0. We could never get back into the game after the early goal.'

Clarin said: 'Argentina said goodbye after a real hammering. The team suffered with that early goal and simply could not respond. We lost the chance to reach the

semi-finals for the first time in 20 years.'

World Cup now 'in our own hands', Germany's Loew says

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 11:46 PM

Cape Town, July 3 (DPA) German coach Joachim Loew hailed his team's ruthless 4-0 demolition of Argentina Saturday and said a fourth World football Cup title is now within reach.

'The team had the determination of champions. Argentina is strong. To score four times is great, almost an unbelievable result,' Loew said after Germany's quarter-final win in Cape Town.

Loew, who acted as Juergen Klinsmann's assistant at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, said the entire team was 'perfect'.

But he had special praise for Lukas Podolski and his ability to 'win a lot of balls', Miroslav Klose, whose two goals in Cape Town put him just one behind Ronaldo's all-time record of 15 World Cup goals, and Man-of-the-Match Bastian Schweinsteiger.

'Schweinsteiger is world class, there's hardly any other midfielder at this level. He is irreplaceable,' Loew said.

'Klose has already made history. It's just great the way he scores. I always knew he would help the team in the important games,' said Loew in a dig at critics who had questioned his decision to bring the 32-year-old striker to South Africa.

Loew said the key to Saturday's success was blocking Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi.

And despite losing top-scorer Thomas Mueller for the semi-finals - the Bayern Munich midfielder received his second booking in South Africa and will now be suspended - Loew said he was convinced that Germany can go all the way.

'Now we are in the semis, among the top four in the world. That's where the team belongs.

'A lot is possible, but you can't go into emotional overdrive. We have it in our own hands to win something really big,' he said.

The God bites the dust

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 11:18 PM

Cape Town, July 3 (IANS) Diego Maradona was close to tears on the touchline, his team numb with shock, outplayed by the brute German machine that knocked in four goals without reply in their quarterfinal tie. This World Cup has turn out to be a graveyard for the fancied teams--France, Italy, England, Brazil and now Argentina.

France and Italy melted in the heat of the first round, the hyped English team succumbed to Germany in the pre-quarters. A lacklustre five-time champion Brazil were shocked by the Netherlands. But Saturday's 4-0 victory of Germany against formidable rivals had the most lethal impact.

Argentina had steamrollered every opponent in the first round with three convincing wins and the world thought Maradona's boys would conquer the Cup for the third time. It was not to be.

Going into the World Cup, only a few committed fans had faith in Maradona. Some felt Mardona and star Lionel Messi would end Argentina's title drought, 24 years after Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal gave them the second title.

But against a young German side, those optimists were left to stare in disbelief at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. They cursed the great Maradona for the loss.

'We always feared for this day. Everybody in Argentina had doubts on Maradona the coach. Today we were proved right,' Juan Sebastain, a disgusted Argentine fan, told IANS.

In an unofficial poll last October on the website of the country's largest daily Clarin, 86 percent of 14,000 voters in Argentina believed that Maradona could not help his team improve. And the worst fears came true when El Diego's side suffered their second consecutive loss at the hands of the Germans in the World Cup.

Football expert and a columnist with England's Daily Express, David Miller, told IANS: 'Maradona's media conferences here were a shade exhibitionist. It had to end this way.'

In this World Cup, some fans couldn't relate to Maradona, always seen as the poor man's hero.

'We are not used to see him in a suit. I guess the grey suit brought ill luck for him. It would have been better if he was in his traditional track suit,' rued Gabriela Joseph, a fan, looking for a reason for their loss.

Maradona returned to the World Cup 16 years since his last cap. His new look has been the talk of the tournament.

With chest puffed out, Maradona sported a trimmed grey beard. His temperament mellowed, Maradona finally looked a man in command of his charges after a near-disastrous qualifying round in which Argenitina just about managed to scrape through.

Though, off-field Maradona was a reflection of his older self, unforgiving and unrepentant. He used the harshest of words to hit back at his fiercest rival Pele and the media back home.

'It seems that he was too much distracted with Pele's comments. Diego would have done better by not responding to all such verbal duels,' said David Almeida, another fan.

'Great players don't always make great coaches. We had a relatively easy run till the pre-quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals Maradona looked short of ideas against the classy German team,' said another fan.

Last week, Maradona at the Loftus Versfield in Pretoria said that Argentina were not favourites for the title.

Little did he know that the dream will be over so soon.

Chancellor Merkel delighted with German World Cup win

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 10:56 PM

Cape Town, July 3 (DPA) German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the nation's 4-0 World Cup football quarter-final demolition of Argentina Saturday 'overwhelming' and 'a dream.'

Speaking to ZDF television from Cape Town, where she attended the game, Merkel said 'Germany has done something wonderful today.'

'It was overwhelming. This is a dream, just a dream. This is a young team but the way they played was very good. They did not allow Argentina much space,' she said.

Merkel sat next to South African President Jacob Zuma and jumped up in joy as goals from Miroslav Klose (2), Thomas Mueller and Arne Friedrich sent Diego Maradona's Argentina packing.

But Merkel also said she wasn't fully convinced about victory until Klose netted the final goal in the 89th minute.

Germany completes hat-trick over Argentina

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 10:28 PM

Cape Town, July 3 (DPA) In 1986, Argentina beat Germany in the final of the World Cup football in Mexico 3-2 to win their second title after 1978.

Since then, the two countries have met three times at the World Cup and each time Germany has triumphed, with their latest victory Saturday being a convincing 4-0 hammering.

In Cape Town, the three-time world champions got off to an ideal start when newcomer Thomas Mueller opened the scoring with a glancing header in the third minute.

Miroslav Klose added a second in the 68th minute before defender Arne Friedrich got his name on the score chart with a goal in the 74th.

A minute from time Klose scored his second to take his overall World Cup total to 14, equalling the German record of Gerd Mueller and just one goal behind Brazilian striker Ronaldo, who holds the all-time record.

The defeat was Argentina's second in a row against Germany in a quarter-final.

In 2006, when Germany hosted the World Cup, Germany won 4-2 on penalties after the match had ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time.

The sides were involved in a punch-up at the end of the penalty shoot-out, which led to Germany midfielder Torsten Frings missing the semi-final after being slapped with a one-goal ban by football's controlling body, FIFA.

In 1990 in Rome, it was Andreas Brehme's penalty goal five minutes from time that gave the German their third World Cup title against a nine-man Argentina side.

With Saturday's 4-0 demolition of Argentina, Germany has completed a hat-trick of World Cup victories and finally laid to rest the ghost of the 1986 World Cup final defeat.

Germany spank Argentina 4-0, book semifinal berth

Published Sat, Jul 03 10 10:22 PM

Cape Town, Jul 3 (PTI) Germany taught Argentina a footballing lesson with a 4-0 drubbing in a World Cup clash of titans to book a semifinal berth with Miroslav Klose scoring twice in his 100th international match here today. In the much-anticipated World Cup quarterfinal match at the Cape Town Stadium, Germany outplayed their bitter rivals by showcasing their characteristic football of hard-running, relentless chase, fast attacks and clinical finishing. Thomas Mueller (third minute), Klose (68th and 89th) and Arne Friedrich (74th) scored for three-time champions Germany. Germany and Argentina had met five times in World Cup before today''s clash with the former having won thrice. Argentina had won once -- in the 1986 final -- while one match had been drawn. For Argentina, this was their second defeat in the quarterfinals in two successive World Cups having lost in penalty shootout in 2006. With two strikes in the match, Klose is in the striking distance to become the most prolific scorer in the World Cup history having scored 14 goals -- equalling his great compatriot Gerd Muller and just one short of Brazilian goal machine Ronaldo. Klose, who plays for Bayern Munich, today overtook legendary Pele of Brazil, who had 12 World Cup goals to his credit. Mueller, on the other hand, established himself as the star of this World Cup with the fastest goal of the tournament, but the 20-year-old Bayern Munich player will miss the semifinal after his second booking today. Bastian Schweinsteiger also established himself as the top midfielder in the tournament as he was involved in almost Germany''s goal-bound moves. He was the one who cut through three Argentine defenders before releasing the ball for Friedrich to score the third German goal. Jochim Loew''s men will now meet either Spain or Paraguay in the semifinal on July 7. Two-time champions Argentina came back into the match in the second period of opening half and early into the second session but failed to produce the spark expected from a team which boasts of World Footballer of the Year Lionel Messi and several other Europe-based stars in their ranks. Messi was not given space by the Germans and the anticipation of the glimpses of his mesmerising runs never came and he had to return home without scoring a goal in this World Cup. It was also a sad end to the tournament for colourful and sometimes maverick Diego Maradona and he had to head for home without joining the ranks of World Cup winners as player and coach. Young German side humbles Maradona's Argentina 4-0

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 10:06 PM

Cape Town, July 3 (DPA) Germany's young guns Saturday humbled Argentina 4-0 with a display of incisive football in the Green Point Stadium here to book a berth in the World Cup semi-finals.

Goals by Thomas Mueller, Arne Friedrich and two by Miroslav Klose - on his 100th cap - ruined the South Americans' dreams of revenge for the quarter-final defeat on penalties at the same stage in Germany four years ago.

It was an amazing result for the Germans, who had destroyed their other old enemy England 4-1 in the previous round.

The only downside was a silly booking for Mueller in the 35th minute, which puts the young star out for the semi-final against either Paraguay or Spain, who were to meet later Saturday.

'We played very well. I am very proud of the team. The early goal was decisive for us. We are strong enough to go further,' Man of the Match Bastian Schweinsteiger said.

Germany were by far the better side, and got off to a dream start on the third minute, when the 20-year-old Mueller ghosted through the dozing Argentinian defence to nod home from a wicked in-swinging Schweinsteiger free kick.

It was the 20-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder's fourth goal of the tournament, putting him level at the top of the scoring charts with Argentina's Gonzalo Higuain, Spain's David Villa and Slovakia's Robert Vittek and teammate Klose.

Argentina were struggling to get going as Germany's movement caused them all kind of problems, although in the 22nd minute Lionel Messi almost played Carlos Tevez in with a through ball that was just a little too close to Manuel Neuer in the German goal.

But Germany still looked more dangerous, and in the 24th minute Mueller pounced on slack defensive play and fed Klose, who should have done better than blast over from 15 yards.

Messi continually dropped deep to pick up possession, running at the German defence and spraying passes around as Argentina tried to find a way through. But in a pattern that was to continue for the rest of the game, he could not find a way through Germany's solid defence.

Much was expected of Argentina, who impressed in the earlier stages of the tournament, but it took them until the 33rd minute to get a shot on target - and it was a weak effort from Angel Di Maria that Neuer saved easily.

Higuain had the ball in the net on 37 minutes, but both he and Carlos Tevez were correctly ruled offside.

Mueller had a shot deflected wide and Messi fired over from outside the box as the half drew to a close with Argentina still looking for the breakthrough.

In the 48th minutes, Di Maria came as close as Argentina had until that point, firing a great shot from the edge of the box just wide of Neuer's right-hand post.

The South Americans looked threatening when Maxi Rodriguez chested down for Tevez, but his thunderbolt struck Per Mertesacker full in the face and bobbled out of play.

Messi's shot broke loose in the box on the 63rd minute, but Boateng stretched out a foot and cleared the danger. Then Di Maria had another effort from outside the box.

But two goals in six minutes put paid to any chance of an Argentinian comeback.

In the 68th minutes, Klose marked his 100th cap with a tap-in goal. Mueller, lying flat on his back, somehow hooked the ball through for Lukas Podolski, who played it across goal for an easy finish from Klose.

Six minutes later, the tireless Schweinsteiger ran through the Argentina defence as if they weren't there and cut back for defender Arne Friedrich to slide in from close-range Germany's third.

Argentina coach Diego Maradona cut a forlorn figure on the sideline, standing at the edge of the technical area with his arms folded as Germany looked for a fourth.

Mueller was taken off to massive cheers before Germany completed the rout on the 89th minute, when Klose hit home from a cross by Mesut Oezil. It was Klose's 14th World Cup goal, equalling the German record of Gerd Mueller.

London, July 3 (DPA) Serena Williams romped to the fourth Wimbledon title of her career Saturday, requiring just 67 minutes to completely dominate Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-2.

'I'm a little bit disappointed that I couldn't show my best today,' said Zvonareva, who will move up to tenth in the next rankings. 'Serena didn't allow me, she played really well.

'After a few hours I'll look back and realise that I've been dreaming of this moment since I was a little kid. It's a dream to play on Centre court at Wimbledon.'

Zvonareva was the third Russian woman to play the Wimbledon after Olga Morozova (1974 runner-up) and Maria Sharapova (2004 winner). She was the second lowest-ranked finalist behind Venus, who stood 31st in 2007.

Williams said her break of Zvonareva for 4-3 was key to the match, after which Zvonareva got only on the scoreboard two more times.

'I'm happy to be able to win. Thanks to the crowd for supporting me even though I've won this one a few times.'

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 09:48 PM

Cape Town, July 3 (DPA) Germany demolished a hapless Argentina 4-0 at the Green Point stadium here Saturday to reach the World Cup football semifinals and send Diego Maradona's team home.

Thomas Mueller put Germany 1-0 up in the third minute with a glancing header from a Bastian Schweinsteiger free-kick and Miroslav Klose added a second from a Lukas Podolski pass in the 68th minute.

Arne Friedrich scored the third after a brilliant Schweinsteiger run and cross and Klose scored his second, and Germany's fourth, a minute before time. It was the Bayern Munich striker's 14th World Cup goal.

Having cruelly exposed Argentina's defensive naivety, the Germans now go on to play Spain or Paraguay in Durban Wednesday.

Chuckers need to be banned: Bedi

Published Sat, Jul 03 10 09:22 PM

Mumbai, July 3 (PTI) Former India skipper Bishan Singh Bedi today said that cricket could be made chucking-free by banning the guilty bowlers, who were acting as role models for the youngsters. "I think every team has at least 2-3 chuckers. It makes me sick to see somebody bowling a dart ball at 90 kmphs per hour and running around the ground in celebration," Bedi said during a cricketing discussion after delivering the second Dilip Sardesai Memorial Lecture here today. The outspoken member of the famed Indian spin quartet was obviously referring to the likes of Sri Lanka''s world record setting off spinner Muthiah Muralitharan. "(Upcoming) Spinners have some role models. If you get rid of these, you''ll get a clean action," he said. "Why can''t we have bowlers like Anil Kumble or Shane Warne? I''ve never seen better than S Venkatraghavan or Erapalli Prasanna," he added. Bedi said he was concerned that while India had banned 132 spinners for chucking in domestic cricket, he had heard about no such steps from countries like Australia, and South Africa. "We need to take collective responsibility to eradicate the ills of the game," he added. Commenting on the Indian spin-attack, Bedi said he felt that flamboyant opening batsman Virender Sehwag, was the best off-spinner in the national squad. .

Africa mourns defeat, last quarter finals

Uruguay's Sebastian Abreu celebrates after scoring the winning goal in a penalty shootout with Ghana...

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 09:18 PM

Millions of Africans mourned the cruel and controversial elimination of Ghana, their last hope for World Cup glory, while four more nations stepped up to battle on Saturday for the remaining semi-final berths.

First, Diego Maradona's Argentina face an equally attack-minded Germany in a grudge game in Cape Town. The city's sunny waterfront filled with rival fans ahead of the game, with drum-beating Argentines in the majority.

Later, Spain are favoured to overcome Paraguay in the day's second match, to settle the last semi-final berth.

But for Africans, the day was still full of sorrow at the defeat of Ghana, who were robbed by a cruel, some said unfair, turn of fate from becoming the first continental nation to reach the semi-finals after being beaten by Uruguay on penalties.

Radio phone-in programmes were full of Africans saying that Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez cheated on Friday night when he stopped a certain winning goal for Ghana by sticking out his hand on the line in the dying seconds of extra time.

Callers echoed the tearful comment by defender John Pantsil after the game: "It was not a penalty, it was a goal, because he (Suarez) was the last man on the goalline and he saved the ball with the hands."

In the highest drama of the tournament, at Johannesburg's Soccer City, the handball was followed by Asamoah Gyan's missed penalty. Ghana then lost the match in a penalty shootout, causing anguish across Africa.

"Why, why?!" said 32-year-old Janet Akushieka in Accra as she voiced the torment of a nation. "It's so painful, so devastating."

SUAREZ A HERO?

Gyan, who cried inconsolably on the pitch after the defeat, said the ball had crossed the line before Suarez scooped it out and spoke of the irony under which he would face a lifelong burden of missing the penalty while the Uruguayan striker, who was sent off for the offence, would be lauded as a hero.

Across the Atlantic, however, the win sealed Uruguay's best World Cup run in 40 years and set off an explosion of joy, although there was concern that Suarez would miss the semi-final against the Netherlands next Tuesday, after being red carded.

This would break up his powerful strike partnership with Friday's man of the match Diego Forlan.

Though the villain in African eyes, Suarez was hailed by his team mates -- and back home in his nation of just 3.5 million people -- for what they said was an instinctive reaction.

"It was worth being sent off in this way because at that moment there was no other choice," Suarez said. "I'm very calm."

The outcome sparked a new debate about whether FIFA should change the rules and introduce a system similar to rugby where referees can award a penalty try.

"We didn't deserve to lose in this way," Ghana's coach Milovan Rajevac said, muttering about "sporting injustice."

The Netherlands, who knocked favourites Brazil out of the World Cup in the biggest shock of the tournament on Friday, will play Uruguay in the semi-final on Tuesday.

Old rivals Germany and Argentina have been goading each other in the run up to their game in Cape Town.

REVENGE

Argentina, the tournament's top scorers with 10 goals, want to avenge defeat by Germany on penalties at the last World Cup. That game ended in an ugly brawl.

Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger tried to wind up the Argentines. "If you see how they gesticulate, how they try to influence the referee ... that is not part of the game, that is a lack of respect," he said.

Maradona, trying to cut a more statesmanlike figure these days than during his wilder youth, hit back dismissively: "What's the matter with you, Schweinsteiger, are you nervous?"

On the pitch, Maradona's men have looked happy and settled during four straight wins. But they face their sternest test against a German side also boasting an attacking flair that belies their past reputation for machine-like organisation.

"Argentina can be hurt," said German coach Joachim Loew, who handed striker Miroslav Klose his 100th international cap.

Few beyond Paraguay's six million people expect them to have any chance of halting talented European champions Spain in the evening clash at Johannesburg's Ellis Park stadium.

Yet Paraguay have only conceded one goal in open play in their four World Cup games, and Spain are hardly on fire.

A shock result for Paraguay would give them a first World Cup semi-final place. A win for Spain would put them within two games of lifting a trophy that has always eluded them despite fielding some hugely-talented sides over the decades.

Germany striker Miroslav Klose made his 100th international appearance on Saturday when he was named in the starting lineup for their World Cup quarter-final match against Argentina.

The 32-year-old, who won his first cap back in March 2001 against Albania when he came on as a substitute and scored the winner two minutes from time, has netted 50 goals for Germany.

He has also scored 12 World Cup goals in three editions to equal Pele, three behind top scorer Ronaldo on 15.

Klose, who is in joint seventh place on Germany's most-capped players list and in third spot in their all-time scorers' list, came into the tournament on the back of his worst season after scoring only three league goals for Bayern Munich.

Germany coach Joachim Loew was criticised for picking Klose for his World Cup squad after he had fired mainly blanks all season but the striker paid back the trust in their first group match, scoring the first in their 4-0 win over Australia.

Klose then grabbed the lead again in their 4-1 win over England in the last 16.

Published Sat, Jul 03 10 08:22 PM

Mumbai, Jul 3 (PTI) The Cricket Board is to add four more teams and make its annual Corporate Trophy tournament, scheduled from September 1-8, into a 16-team affair. MCC for D/N Test, concerned over low Test attendance in India

Published Sat, Jul 03 10 07:52 PM

London, Jul 3 (PTI) Expressing serious concern over Test cricket''s dwindling profile, including in India, the Marylebone Cricket Club has called for immediate introduction of day/night matches, besides asking the Cricket Boards to guard against players turning twenty20 freelancers. "We should not delay in presenting day-night Test cricket as an option for those Test-playing countries that are struggling to attract an audience," John Stephenson, the MCC assistant secretary, said. "We say this form of the game is viable now. We proved it in Abu Dhabi with the four-day game under lights. It was the perfect experiment, and demonstrated this game should go ahead now. We don''t need another 18 months of research. The world of cricket is ready. It should not wait; the time is now," he said in a statement after a two-day meeting of the MCC World Cricket Committee at Lord''s. The committee, which has former India captain Rahul Dravid as one of the members, discussed a research paper which showed that only 11 per cent of cricket watched in India was Test matches compared to 33 per cent six years ago. It said Cricket Boards will have to make the five-day format more attractive with greater rewards on offer to ward off the threat of players becoming T20 freelancers. "With T20 riches on offer, the committee feel national governing bodies should do all that they can to retain their best talent and ensure Test cricket is a financially rewarding career. There are freelance cricketers who see a profitable career in playing shorter forms of the game only; the committee wants to guard against an increase in their number. "The committee understands that market forces will always dictate what type of cricket spectators want to watch and that you cannot force people to watch Test cricket. Cricket authorities around the world need to make a more concerted effort to attract audiences to Test cricket: a World Test Championship, played by well-rewarded cricketers - on fair pitches - at a time of the day to suit the paying public, would provide the Test game with the boost it requires." Dravid informed the committee that India will play an increased number of Tests in the coming months after efforts from BCCI and other cricket authorities. "Dravid presented his thoughts after three years of the Indian Premier League to the Committee and how the IPL franchises have learned to maximise their brand, reach new markets and become profitable ventures," the statement said. "He was, however, concerned that parents of talented children were asking coaches to teach them Twenty20-specific skills only, as rewards of an IPL contract are immense. MORE PTI PDS ATK

FIFA warn Nigeria of dire consequences

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 07:48 PM

Johannesburg, July 3 (DPA) The future of football in Nigeria will be compromised if the government fails to rescind a self-imposed ban on the country's teams, the ruling body FIFA said.

A letter dated July 2 and signed by FIFA secretary-general Jerome Valcke stated the consequences for football in Nigeria should the government doesn't back down on its withdrawal of all teams from international competitions for the next two years.

'We would like to underline the dire effects a suspension could have on the future of Nigerian football. It would mean that no Nigerian team of any sorts (including clubs) could have any international contacts,' the letter said.

'It would also mean that neither NFF nor any of its members of official could benefit from any development programme, course or training from FIFA or CAF any longer.

'We consider that this governmental decision would only completely isolate Nigerian football and could thus stall reforms and further development and improvement of Nigerian football for a long time.

'It puts the whole future of Nigerian football in danger.'

FIFA warned that if this directive by the government is not withdrawn before 6pm South African time Monday, their emergency committee will meet and suspend Nigeria from international football with immediate effect.

FIFA have informed Nigeria that arrangements have begun for another country to replace the country at the Under-20 World Cup, which kicks off July 13 in Germany.

The world football ruling body disclosed they have established a case against the government for 'a clear and blatant interference' in the way football is run in Nigeria. They said this violates FIFA statutes.

FIFA also said that elections to the NFF board slated for August 21 in Lagos must proceed accordingly and be guided by the NFF statutes.

NFF president Sani Lulu is seeking a new term in office next month and FIFA said they would be prompted by the present situation to extend Lulu's tenure, which runs out on August 28.

'As long as this decision is not withdrawn, FIFA will deal exclusively with the legitimate executive committee of the NFF, even it that means that its term must be extended over the 28 August, 2010, date originally fixed for the next elections,' Valcke said.

Government officials have argued that the tenure of the NFF has expired and as such they have asked FIFA to allow them set up a caretaker management committee to run football in the country until new elections are conducted.

Former internationals Augustine Okocha and Samson Siasia have been named by government on this management committee, which is to be inaugurated on Monday in Abuja.

However, FIFA have turned down this request, warning that it will not recognise the committee.

FIFA executive committee members Jack Warner and Amos Adamu are due in Nigeria to meet with the country's government on this matter.

BCCI to initiate legal action against Modi: Manohar

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 07:32 PM

Mumbai, July 3 (IANS) Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Shashank Manohar, after the Special General Meeting (SGM), Saturday said the disciplinary committee will pursue charges against suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) chief Lalit Modi and legal action will be initiated against him.

The BCCI Saturday ratified the charges against Modi and reconstituted the disciplinary committee, which will look into the charges slapped on Modi, inducting Jyotiraditya Scindia in place of Manohar in the three-member panel. Scindia is president of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association. The other members of the disciplinary panel are Arun Jaitley and new IPL chairman Chirayu Amin.

The panel has till Oct 26 to complete the inquiry on Modi, who is facing charges on several counts ranging from financial irregularities to bid-rigging as chairman of the cash-rich IPL.

Manohar said all the decisions taken at the SGM were unanimous before adding that the Kings XI Punjab team will not be sold until the board finishes all inquiries into the matter.

'All decisions including the induction of Jyotiraditya Scindia in the three-member disciplinary committee were unanimous,' Manohar told reporters.

Manohar has pulled himself out of proceedings after Modi levelled countercharges against him and BCCI secretary N. Srinivasan and asked them to recuse themselves from hearing charges against him.

'I have been accused of being biased and hence Scindia was named as the third person in the committee. He has not been involved in the day-to-day functioning of BCCI and hence is unbiased,' Manohar said.

Manohar said the disciplinary panel will issue legal notices to Modi and investigation agencies will decide on further action. 'The BCCI inquiry on Modi and the filing of charges can happen simultaneously,' he said.

'The house after a deliberation and debate in the matter, resolved that the president of the board should be authorised to take all legal actions including civil and criminal for the wrongful loss caused to the board against Mr. Modi and any other person.

'Whether it is a civil or criminal matter, we can only decide after we have probed the legality of the issue,' he said.

The SGM was convened after Srinivasan rejected the replies of Modi contained in the three showcause notices and referred the charges to the disciplinary committee for further proceedings. A three-fourths majority was needed to ratify Srinivasan's decision.

PHF suspends Abbas'' contract for skipping national camp

Published Sat, Jul 03 10 07:22 PM

Karachi, Jul 3 (PTI) The Pakistan Hockey Federation has suspended the central contract of Sohail Abbas and is planning disciplinary action against him after the veteran drag-flicker skipped a training camp here ahead of the national team''s European tour. A senior PHF official said that despite several reminders, Abbas was from the camp set up for the team''s forthcoming Europe sojourn, which is a preparatory tour ahead of this year''s Delhi Commonwealth Games and Guangzhou Asian Games. "We have suspended his central contract and his department, WAPDA has also set up an inquiry committee to probe into the matter," PHF secretary Asif Bajwa said. "If the inquiry committee recommends disciplinary action against him, then his contract can be cancelled and he can also be suspended for a period of time," Bajwa stated. Abbas, who is the leading goal-scorer in international hockey with over 200 strikes and also the senior-most player in the present Pakistan team, remained elusive from the media since he was named among the probables for the camp. Another PHF official said Bajwa himself had called up Abbas several times but the player did not not respond. "His behavior is strange even if he does not want to play he should have informed us. This is not the a senior sportsman behaves," he said. Abbas has had uncountable run-ins with the establishment in the past also for several issues, most notable among them was his preference to play professional hockey in Europe over national commitments. Abbas was recalled to the national team last year ahead of the 2010 hockey World Cup in New Delhi after the PHF had suspended him for more than a year following his failure to attend a training camp for the last Asian Games. Meanwhile, sources close to Abbas said that he remained absent from the camp because he was fed up with the way the federation treated senior players. "They invited Abbas and other senior players last time also for the Azlan Shah Cup but did not select them without assigning any reason. Abbas is also fed up with the situation," one source said.

Fans all smiles before Germany-Argentina match

Soccer fans celebrate Argentina's victory over Mexico during their 2010 World Cup match, in Caracas...

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 07:18 PM

The blue and white colours of Argentina dominated the scene at Cape Town's sunny waterfront on Saturday as fans of the South American side danced to a pounding bass drum chanting "Maradona, Maradona."

Amused locals, many giving their yellow Bafana Bafana shirts another outing despite South Africa's exit almost two weeks ago, smiled and clapped while Germans made joking penalty kick gestures.

Argentina will face Germany at Cape Town's Green Point stadium later looking to claim a semi-final spot and lay to rest the frustrations of four years ago when Germany knocked them out on penalties at the same stage of the German hosted World Cup.

"We will rewrite history today and win 2-0," said Adrian Romerzaro, a 30-year-old businessman from Rosario in Argentina.

"The team has been incredible, and the warmth and focus they have around Maradona is absolutely unique, no other coach has ever achieved that. He is an idol," he added.

Maradona's long history as a player, colourful personal life and his pitch-side antics as a coach have helped make Argentina hugely popular with South Africans, who flocked in their thousands to the stadium.

"I've followed all their games, they are a great passionate team, and I guess I also like their light blue colour," said Estine Johnston, 27, gesturing to her new sky blue Argentina shirt and confessing she knew very little about football.

"I wanted to be there and part of the atmosphere," she said.

Clusters of German fans enjoyed an early beer in the sunshine and recalled the excitement of four years ago when Germany reached a surprise World Cup third place finish.

The current young squad has already surpassed a lot of expectations, particularly in their 4-1 defeat of England in the second-round.

"I've had to extend my holiday and postpone my flight," said German fan Sebastian Gielen, a 29-year-old telecoms worker from Bonn, sporting a black, red and gold necklace, a German flag and German football shirt.

"I never thought we would get this far. There is a long, exciting history of meetings with Argentina so this will be a great game. But to be honest my head is still spinning after that amazing victory over England," he said.

Saturday's quarter-final clash between Argentina and Germany will be a repeat of the 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals, the first won by an Argentina squad featuring Maradona and the second by Germany.

Mani wants PCB to submit report on terror attack to ICC

Published Sat, Jul 03 10 06:52 PM

Karachi, Jul 3 (PTI) Former ICC President Ehsan Mani does not foresee international cricket returning to Pakistan until the PCB submits its report on the terrorist attack on Sri Lankan team in Lahore last year. Mani blamed the Pakistan Cricket Board for putting itself in a situation where there is no hope of international cricket returning to the trouble-torn country in near future. "The PCB has not sent any report on the attack on the Sri Lankan team as yet to the ICC even though I know for a fact that the ICC has asked the PCB to send a report a few times," Mani said. Mani told the Geo Super channel that he was at a loss to understand why the PCB had not sent the report as yet to the ICC. "Until the PCB sends this report to the ICC, I don''t see international cricket returning to Pakistan with the support of the ICC and its member countries," he said. The ICC this week didn''t allot any of its international events to Pakistan in the calendar announced until 2015 though Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India have all been given big tournaments. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will host the next two T20 World Cups in 2012 and 2014. The PCB has also not indicated as yet whether it even bid for hosting rights of any event. Suspected militants attacked the touring Sri Lankan team bus in March last year in which five Pakistani policemen and a driver were killed and five Sri Lankan players were wounded. Following the incident the teams have refused to play in Pakistan while the ICC has also shifted away the 2011 World Cup matches from the country on security grounds. Pakistan since then has been forced to play its home matches at neutral venues in the United Arab Emirates. It has scheduled a ''home'' series against South Africa in Abu Dhabi and Dubai later this year after the South Africans also made it clear that they wouldn''t tour Pakistan. Mani said that the decision to not allot any event to Pakistan until 2015 was not surprising. He said although the ICC could revise its calendar in five years time but for things to change and international cricket to return to Pakistan the PCB would has to be pro-active. "Pakistan has to take the ICC and member countries into confidence and share the report of the Sri Lankan incident," he said. Mani, a Pakistani who is settled in the United Kingdom, headed the International Cricket Council from 2003-2006. The Pakistan government has so far not taken any disciplinary action against some senior police officials, who were blamed for negligence and security lapses by an judicial inquiry tribunal that probed into the incident. The police officials were blamed for negligence that allowed the attack to take place. Police in Punjab claim to have arrested the main masterminds of the attack that rocked the cricket world.

BCCI to discuss Lalit Modi's fate

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 06:08 PM

Mumbai, July 3 (ANI): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to file a Rs 1200 crore-fraud case against suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) Commissioner Lalit Modi.

Modi's fate may be decided today, as the BCCI has convened its special general meeting to draft action plan against him.

The BCCI has reconstituted the Disciplinary Committee that will investigate the matter against Modi with Jyotiraditya Scindia replacing Shashank Manohar as the third member.

It has been reported that around thirty members will be attending the meeting and those allegedly close to Modi are expected to miss this special meeting.

The three-point agenda of the meeting to be held at the Board headquarters will ratify the action of Srinivasan in referring the charges against Modi issued in the three show cause notices served to him to the Disciplinary Committee for further proceedings among other things.

The BCCI had earlier in May given a show cause notice to Modi on charges of financial irregularity.

There are five main charges against Modi, ranging from receiving kickbacks for allotting TV broadcast rights to indiscipline and leveling baseless charges against the BCCI.

He is also facing charges of rigging the bidding of two new IPL teams, which were eventually won by Sahara and the Kochi IPL consortium and also for being a ghost owner in three IPL teams.

Modi has claimed that he has submitted most of the relevant IPL documents.

They include all franchisee agreements, global media rights agreements, the global media rights packages, bid documents, media rights licensee agreements, eligibility letters of all bidders with details and all sponsorship agreements entered into by IPL. (ANI)

Smith one of Australia's 'most promising cricketers' in 2 decades: Waugh

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 05:38 PM

London, July 3(ANI): Former Australia captain Steve Waugh insists that leg spinner Steve Smith has the potential to be the country's No.1 spinner, as he is one of the most promising cricketers to have come forward in the last 20 years.

Waugh's comments come as Smith prepares for a possible Test debut in the upcoming series against Pakistan after the injury to off-spinner Nathan Hauritz.

"I think Steve Smith is one of the most promising cricketers we have seen in Australia in the past 20 years," Fox Sports quoted Waugh, as saying.

"I think he could be the No.1 spinner. You have to give him a little bit of time, I mean leg-spin is a tough art. We have been really spoilt by Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill and people forget Stuart MacGill was a terrific spinner as well," he added.

The former captain also praised the 20-year-old for the impact he has made with both bat and ball in the ongoing ODI series against England.

"I think with his batting he is not far off being in the top six batters anyway, he is an excellent fieldsman as well when you have that sort of talent then you have to got give that an opportunity," Waugh said.

"Whether he comes in as an all-rounder (I'm not sure), but he has to be close to being in that first Test side," he added. (ANI)

Wayne Rooney's cousin slammed for partying just 2 days after boob job

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 05:08 PM

London, July 3 (ANI): Wayne Rooney's cousin has been slammed by TV doctor Christian Jessen for partying just two days after having a boob job.

The glamour model, 20, went under the knife in order to boost her assets from a 34FF to a 34JJ in Channel 4's 'The Ugly Face of Beauty'.

But she removed the bandages and support bra before her wounds had healed and went clubbing until 5am in Spanish resort Puerto Banus, where she had the op. She also boozed while on medication.

"Complications can happen up to ten days after surgery so women must be careful," the Sun quoted Jessen, who stars in Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies as saying.

Natalie, who aims to have the biggest boobs in Britain, said she did not take the op seriously.

"I'd listen to my doctors if it wasn't cosmetic surgery - something like having my kidneys removed." (ANI)

Dutch winning machine stays on course for success

Netherlands' players celebrate after their 2010 World Cup quarter-final soccer match against Brazil in Port...

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 04:58 PM

Netherlands finally put themselves among the favourites to win the World Cup after their impressive 13th straight competitive win knocked towering favourites Brazil out of the tournament.

However, the 2-1 quarter-final victory over the five-time world champions on Friday was more than just the first major scalp the Dutch had claimed during their winning streak.

It also proved that the team in orange had learned lessons from the past.

Four years ago the Dutch were knocked out in the second round by Portugal in a bad-tempered match with 16 yellow cards and four players sent off. But yesterday against the refined Brazilians, they kept their composure and proved they now knew what was required to win at this stage of the finals.

"If you see the difference compared with the Portugal match four years back it is clear that this team has really developed," Dirk Kuyt told reporters.

"Then, everything ran out of control but now it proved that playing in big competitions, like most of us do, really paid off," he added.

From the side that lost to Portugal in 2006, seven started against Brazil yesterday, while Nigel de Jong and Gregory van der Wiel, who are both suspended for the semi-final against Uruguay, were the only starters who were new to the squad.

The win over Brazil was also the first time that the Dutch had had to come from behind during their winning run.

During their qualification campaign they breezed through a group with Scotland, Norway, Iceland and Macedonia, while so far in the finals Bert van Marwijk's team have eased past Denmark, Japan, Cameroon and Slovakia.

So, the match against Brazil showed the Dutch also had the grit to turn a game around after their opponents had taken an early through Robinho and then had more chances to settle the match before the interval.

"After our poor start in the first half we straightened our back, and then you need some luck like we had with the equaliser," said Kuyt.

"But after the equaliser we felt that something snapped with Brazil, while we just went on playing our own game.

"This team is mentally so strong that even the late change of Andre Ooijer instead of Joris Mathijsen made no difference," he added.

But despite reaching the last four, Kuyt is not getting carried away.

"It feels so unreal reaching a semi-final but it is also just the next match," he said. "So on Tuesday we just have to be ready to play the next match of our lives.

Minister says S.Africa to 'break even' on World Cup costs

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 04:38 PM

Johannesburg, July 3 (ANI): The World Cup will add Rand 38 billion to South Africa's economy this year, more or less the amount spent by South Africa to host the tournament, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference in Johannesburg on the economic benefits of the tournament, Sports 24 quoted Gordhan, as saying that the massive infrastructural improvements undertaken for the World Cup would benefit the country for generations to come.

The government has spent Rand 33.7 billion on hosting the tournament, including Rand 11.7 billion on 10 world cup stadiums, five of which were built from scratch, and Rand 11.2 billion to boost the rail network.

A further Rand 1.3 billion was spent on securing the event and Rand 1.5 billion on telecommunications and new broadcast technology, treasury figures showed.

Those figures do not include spending by host cities and provinces, which bring the overall bill closer to Rand 40 billion.

The minister estimated the world cup had created 130 000 jobs - in the construction of stadiums and other facilities, tourism and feeder industries. He did not say how many were permanent jobs.

Spending by hundreds of thousands of world cup visitors would add 0.4 percent to GDP this year, he predicted. (ANI)

Serena says 'Williams sisters' will dominate Wimbledon

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 04:28 PM

London, July 3 (ANI): World number one Serena Williams has declared that her family has no plans to give up dominating Wimbledon.

Serena would chase her fourth All England singles crown against Vera Zvonerava today.

"There is no doubt about the Williams' sisters being here at Wimbledon next year. That is a sure thing," the Sun News quoted Serena, as saying.

"It's been a great decade and I feel honoured to be part of it. The next decade? Who knows! Hopefully we will still be around but we have so many other things going on. It's a really cool feeling to see your name going up on the winners' board again and once you have something you always want to keep it," she added.

The Williams sisters faced each other in both the last two finals. But 30-year-old Venus, crashed out to Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova in this year's last eight.

"Honestly, I would almost rather play her because at least I know for certain one of us is going to win something," Serena said. (ANI)

England may rest key players for Lord's 'dead rubber' ODI against Australia

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 03:52 PM

London, July 3(ANI): England skipper Andrew Strauss has said that the team management might look to try out some inexperienced players in Saturday's final ODI against Australia at Lord's.

England has an unbeatable 3-1 series lead in the five-match series.

"With Bangladesh coming up as well maybe we can look to chopping and change a little. On the one hand, the 11 players that we have played so far have done a very good job and we are 3-1 up in the series," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Strauss, as saying.

"There are obviously other guys in the squad we want to have a look at, so we have to have a think about that," he added.

The three-match series against Bangladesh starts in Nottingham on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Australian coach Tim Nielsen said that Wednesday's 78-run win in the fourth ODI at The Oval has boosted the team's morale.

"We feel a bit better about ourselves. We were probably building to that game throughout the first three. It would be nice to finish 3-2," Nielsen said.

"If we do that, we know we've played well tomorrow and it's probably a pretty fair reflection of the series," he added. (ANI)

Waqar's request for friendly pitches in England rejected

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 03:22 PM

Karachi, July 3 (ANI): Pakistan cricket coach Waqar Younis' request to prepare pitches that would help his team, particularly the spinners, has been rejected by Lord's curators, the venue for the first Test between Pakistan and Australia starting July 13.

Waqar met the curators soon after he arrived in London for an exhaustive tour, however, he was told that he can not force the curators to prepare a certain type of strip.

"They told Waqar that not even the England captain or the team management can tell the curator what sort of track they want for a particular match," The News quoted sources, privy to the issue, as saying.

Sources said that Waqar and the Pakistan team management believes that since it was their 'home' series, they have the right to choose tracks that suited their team.

Pakistan will begin the marathon tour with back-to-back Twenty20 Internationals against Australia at Edgbaston on July 5 and 6, and would then take on Australia in a two match Test series.

The second Test would be played at Headingley, Leeds. (ANI)

Gyan vows to bounce back after shock penalty miss

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 03:18 PM

Johannesburg, July 3 (DPA) Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has vowed to bounce back from a penalty miss that eventually denied the Black Stars a historic World Cup semi-final berth.

The Friday quarter-final with Uruguay was tied at 1-1 in the last seconds of extra time when Gyan's spot kick hit the crossbar with goalkeeper Fernando Muslera well beaten.

Uruguay went on to win in a shootout as Ghana failed to become the first African team to make the final four at a World Cup.

'I will bounce back, I am strong mentally,' said Gyan. 'I had the courage to take the penalty, but that is normal, I am the penalty taker.'

The Rennes striker showed great character after his miss as he stepped up a few minutes later to net his team's first kick in the shootout. But Muslera saved the efforts of skipper John Mensah and Dominic Adiyiah to send Uruguay through 4-2.

Adiyiah's last-gasp header was sailing towards goal but Uruguay forward Luis Suarez stopped the ball with his hand. Suarez was sent off by Portuguese referee Olegario Benquerenca and Ghana got the penalty that could have won the game.

'That's the game, now he (Suarez) is the hero in his country, the ball was going in, he stopped it with his hand and I missed the penalty. That's the way it is,' said a tearful Gyan afterwards.

Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson insisted that Gyan, who converted penalties against Serbia and Australia in the group stage and scored the extra time winner in the Round of 16 against the United States, will not be targeted because of this miss.

'No, there will be nothing like that,' said Kingson. 'I had a message from my wife. She said everybody is happy now. We did our best and everybody is cheering him.'

The youngster Adiyiah, meanwhile, said his header had crossed the goal line and a goal and not a penalty should have been given to Ghana.

'The ball went in, it did cross the line, and the referee disallowed it,' he said. 'If it was our day, the referee would have seen it and whistled as a goal. Everything is hard luck.'

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac said that Gyan's miss gave Uruguay an advantage in the shootout.

'We had this penalty and the chance to reach the semi-finals but we didn't get it,' he said.

'In the shoot-out Uruguay had a psychological advantage.'

Holland outplay India 6-3 in Hamburg Masters opener

Published Sat, Jul 03 10 02:58 PM

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI) India started their campaign at the BDO Hamburg Masters hockey tournament on a disappointing note, losing 3-6 to world number three Holland at the Ulhenhoster hockey Club at Hamburg, Germany. Bob de Voogd (ninth), Robbert Kemperman (17th), Jeroen Hertzburger (22nd), Klaas Vermeulen (34th), Mink ven der Weerden (46th) and Constantijn Jonker (60th Min) were the goal-scorers forn the Dutch side, while the Indian marksmen were Dhananjay Mahadik (18th), Sandeep Singh (43rd) and Ravi Pal (52nd). India will next play world number two and Olympic Champions Germany, who beat beat Japan 53 in another match yesterday. Against Holland, India started the encounter in a lethargic fashion, which resulted in numerous unforced errors in the deep defence. Except for Sardar Singh, who played his heart out, Indian defenders wore a sorry look as the Dutch caught them on the wrong footing with frequent position interchange and quick passes. The continuous pressure by the Dutch forwardline yielded result in the ninth minute when de Voogd scored in the ninth minute from a Verga cross. Eight minutes later, Kemperman encashed on a pass from a turnover in the Indian midfield to make it 20. India, however, reduced the margin in the next minute from their first short corner when captain Mahadik slotted the home to the Dutch goalkeeper''s left with a carpet flick. But Holland fired back in the 22nd and 34th minutes with goals from Hertzburger and Vermeulen to go into the breather with an impressive 4-1 lead. Eight minutes into the second half, India pulled another back when drag-flciker Sandeep Singh scored from their second penalty corner. But India''s comeback hopes dashed when Mink ven der Weerden made it 5-2 in the 46th minute from Holland''s third penalty corner. Shortly after the goal, Tushar Khandker missed the target with a reverse flick off a Ravi Pal pass. Ravi Pal then scored in the 52nd minute to make it 5-3 and give India glimmer of a hope. But it was not to be India''s day as Holland completed their tally when Jonker scored after he was set up by Vermeulen in the 60th minute to pocket full three points from the high-scoring encounter.

Armstrong slams 'sour' Landis allegations

Radioshack rider Lance Armstrong of the U.S. cycles during a training session on the prologue...

Published>Sat, Jul 03 10 02:48 PM

Seven-times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong sharply dismissed Floyd Landis's latest doping accusations in a statement hours before the start of the three-week race on Saturday.

In a Wall Street Journal article, disgraced 2006 Tour winner Landis provided more details about his use of performance-enhancing drugs and claims against some of the biggest names in the sport, including Armstrong.

"Today's Wall Street Journal article is full of false accusations and more of the same old news from Floyd Landis, a person with zero credibility and an established pattern of recanting tomorrow what he swears to today," the 38-year-old American said in a statement.

"The article repeats many of Landis's baseless and already-discredited claims against many successful people in cycling, and even includes some newly created Landis concoctions.

"Landis's credibility is like a carton of sour milk: once you take the first sip, you don't have to drink the rest to know it has all gone bad."

Armstrong, who launches his bid for an unprecedented eighth Tour title with Saturday's 8.9-kms prologue, questioned the timing of Landis's allegations.

"For years, sensational stories based on the allegations of axe-grinders have surfaced on the eve of the Tour for publicity reasons, and this article is simply no different," he said.

PRE-TOUR SENSATIONALISM

"Lastly, I have too much work to do during this, my final Tour, and then after my retirement in my continued fight against cancer, to add any attention to this predictable pre-Tour sensationalism."

Six weeks after he finally confessed to doping and pointed the finger at some of his former team mates and team officials, Landis again admitted to using a variety of banned substances, as well as accusing his former U.S. Postal team mates and officials.

Landis provided accounts of blood transfusions, including one in an isolated Alpine mountain where they pretended the team bus broke down and another in a hotel room during the 2004 Tour, as well as fresh claims the team had funded their doping operation by selling off spare bicycles.

Three other former U.S. Postal riders, who were not identified, had said in interviews that doping had occurred within the team, the Journal added, but all the riders and officials identifed by Landis have denied the accusations.

The claims are nothing new for Armstrong, who won the Tour de France seven times in succession between 1999 and 2005 but has spent most of his career fending off accusations of wrongdoing despite never failing a doping test.

The American has always maintained his innocence and dismissed Landis, who was stripped of his 2006 Tour win for a doping offence, as having no credibility.
