Struggling Aussies don''t interest Pietersen

Sun, Nov 07 10 12:26 PM

Melbourne, Nov 7 (PTI) England''s maverick batsman Kevin Pietersen is not interested in knowing about Australia''s woeful one-day run and claims he has not seen a single ball of the Ashes rivals'' recent defeats against Sri Lanka. Australia is going through one of their worst phases, losing their seventh match on the trot in all forms of the game but that doesn''t bother Pietersen much. "I haven''t watched a single ball," Pietersen told AAP. "My computer''s turned on to Skype and I speak to my wife and baby as much as I can. "I haven''t watched a single ball, I haven''t even turned my TV on in Australia. I haven''t read a headline, nothing," said Pietersen, who along with his teammates will be engaging in a fierce battle with Australia when the first Ashes Test kicks off on November 26. "Somebody told me (on Saturday) that they lost (on Friday) but that''s got nothing to do with us. We are concentrating on our game and what we do," he added.

Oz CWG gold medallist Dale Parker loses licence following drink-driving accident

Published>Sun, Nov 07 10 11:44 AM

Melbourne, Nov 7 (ANI): Dale Parker, the Australian cyclist who won a gold medal in the Delhi Commonwealth Games, has reportedly lost his licence after a drink-driving accident in the Adelaide Hills.

According to The Age, police said that the 18-year-old P-plate driver from Nairne recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.098 on Friday night after losing control of the Nissan sedan he was driving and hitting a light pole in Mount Barker.

A 17-year-old man has been admitted in hospital with head injuries, after the light pole allegedly hit by Parker's car fell on the pedestrian, police added.

They also claimed that Parker was doing burn-outs before the incident and was charged with drink driving and breaching his probationary driving conditions. He was disqualified on the spot from driving for six months.

Police have seized the Nissan sedan and the teenager would receive a summons to appear in court on a date yet to be set, the paper said.

Cycling South Australia could conduct its own investigation into the crash, it added. (ANI)

Pakistan beat India in HK Sixes preliminary match

Published>Sun, Nov 07 10 11:08 AM

Hong Kong, Oct 7 (ANI): Pakistan beat India by 22 runs in the preliminary round match on the opening day of Hong Kong Cricket Sixes tournament.

"It's always good to start with a win... For a first game, it was a good performance from the guys and I'm pretty pleased," the Dawn quoted Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik, as saying.

Pakistan grabbed early high ground after India won the toss and chose to bowl. It scored 78 for 2, while India could garner only 56 runs in 4 overs.

Earlier, huge changes were made to the format of the popular tournament at the Kowloon Cricket Club on Saturday due to persistent rain, which led to the cancellation of more than three-quarters of the programme. Poor weather resulted in a switch to four overs per innings from five.

Meanwhile, all eight teams got a run on first day, with Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and South Africa joining Pakistan as winners.

While Sri Lanka knocked off 77 runs needed for victory over New Zealand, hosts Hong Kong, chasing 61, hammered England with a five-wicket win.

South Africa chased down Australia's 73-run total for loss of three wickets, scrambling through for a single on final ball of match to clinch the match.

Organisers have kept options open in view of the rainy weather.

"If rain stays away, we will play remaining eight pool games on Sunday, with top two going into Cup semi- finals. But if there are any more interruptions, we have to go straight into Cup final with winners of each pool progressing," said tournament director Adam Davies.(ANI)

Button escapes unhurt from armed attackers

Published>Sun, Nov 07 10 09:38 AM

Formula One world champion Jenson Button escaped unhurt from an attempted armed attack as he was driven away from the Brazilian Grand Prix circuit on Saturday, he and his McLaren team said.

The Briton, who won his title in Brazil a year ago, was in traffic outside the Interlagos circuit when a group of men with guns targeted his car.

"We were going back from the track and were outside a shanty town and moving slowly on a busy road," Button told the Mail on Sunday newspaper.

"I saw a dog come out, which was very cute. The next thing I saw was a man with a gun. I said 'isn't that a gun?' and as soon as I said that, the driver angled the car and floored it.

"That's when we saw six men, all of them brandishing machine guns."

McLaren said in an earlier statement that Button was quickly driven away from danger by an armed policeman trained in avoidance techniques who was at the wheel of the bullet-proof Mercedes provided by the team.

Button's father John, his manager Richard Goddard and physiotherapist Mike Collier were also in the car.

BIG WEAPON

Goddard told Reuters that they had left the circuit at 1900 local (2100 GMT) and were stationary in a queue of cars when they spotted a group of men running out of a building to their right.

"I noticed one of the guys had what looked like a big truncheon and then someone shouted 'One of them has got a gun'," he said. "And another one seemed to have a much bigger weapon.

"The guy pulled the gun out and someone else pulled an even bigger one out and they came running over towards the car. We told the driver 'Go, Go, Go'."

The driver hit several other cars as he forced his way through the traffic to safety, Goddard said.

"Thankfully the Merc was bloody strong and we had a police driver. If we hadn't it would have been potentially a very nasty situation ... they certainly weren't carrying handguns.

"I don't know what would have happened if he hadn't got the car out."

McLaren said the Sao Paulo authorities would be providing additional security to transfer the drivers and other senior team personnel to the circuit for Sunday's penultimate race of the season.

Although the area around Interlagos has become more built up over the years there are still favelas, or shanty towns, in the vicinity while Sao Paulo is a sprawling city with one of the highest crime rates in South America.

Teams are always on the watch for attempted armed attacks on members leaving the circuit after previous incidents over the years despite a strong police presence.

Members of the Toyota team were ambushed at gunpoint four years ago as they left the circuit, with shots fired by a gang of youths who also tried to kick in their car windows. None suffered any injury.

Goddard said he had noticed a group of about 70 policemen being talked to by an officer less than 200 metres further up the hill from the incident.

Button had earlier qualified 11th on the starting grid, with his four title rivals well ahead of him and his hopes of retaining the title are likely to be extinguished on Sunday.

"Before, there was a sliver of hope of retaining the championship but now it's gone, it's basically impossible," the Briton had told reporters.

Sri Lanka wins toss, bats in 3rd ODI

Sun, Nov 07 10 09:08 AM

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat in the third and final limited-overs cricket international against Australia on Sunday, seeking to complete a clean sweep of the series. Australia, battling to avoid its eighth-straight loss in all forms of cricket, elected to rest captain Ricky Ponting, handing the leadership to Michael Clarke for the second time in the series. The Australians made three changes to their lineup for the match, naming Callum Ferguson for Ponting, Xavier Doherty in place of spinner Nathan Hauritz and Mitchell Starc for paceman Peter Siddle. Sri Lanka made two changes to the side that won the second match by 29 runs in Sydney on Friday, naming Jeevan Mendis in place of Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando for Nuwan Kulasekara.

Juve's Del Neri scolds Buffon, more injuries weigh

Sun, Nov 07 10 12:36 AM

Juventus coach Luigi Del Neri had a minor side swipe at absent goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon on Saturday but was more concerned about two new injuries to hit his already stretched squad.

Buffon, who last played in Italy's first game at the World Cup, is recovering from back surgery but missed a team photoshoot on Friday and has appeared little at the training ground.

His absence led to media speculation his days at Juve could be numbered.

"You'll need to ask him why he's not been around much. Maybe he could have come to the training ground a few times," Del Neri told a news conference, adding he hoped Buffon would be fit by January.

More pressing for Del Neri is news that Serbia winger Milos Krasic and defender Nicola Legrottaglie have been ruled out for around 25 and 40 days respectively with thigh problems.

"Everything is going against us at the moment," said Del Neri, whose side won 2-1 at AC Milan last week to rise up to fourth in Serie A.

Juve, who drew 0-0 at home to Salzburg in Thursday's Europa League to complicate their chances of progressing, have a string of other injuries and some unlikely faces are set to start at home to Cesena on Sunday.

Left back Fabio Grosso was dropped from the first team squad at the start of the campaign for rejecting a move away but is poised to play on Sunday along with youth team centre back Frederik Sorensen.

Bayern snatch draw with Gladbach, Mainz lose

Sun, Nov 07 10 12:20 AM

Bayern Munich's Bundesliga comeback suffered a setback when they drew 3-3 at Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday, only avoiding defeat thanks to an 84th minute equaliser through defender Philipp Lahm.

With only three outfield players on the bench, injury-hit Bayern looked on their way to victory when they recovered from a goal down to lead at halftime 2-1 thanks a Mario Gomez goal and a Bastian Schweinsteiger penalty.

With a stunning 79 percent possession in the first half, Bayern could have added more goals as they seek to climb up the table after a bad start.

But with just 16 points from 11 matches, they are down in ninth, trailing leaders Borussia Dortmund, who visit Hanover 96 on Sunday, by nine points. Mainz 05 lost a chance to go top for 24 hours at least when they were beaten 1-0 at Freiburg.

"We gave away a certain win in just 10 minutes (in the second half," said Bayern coach Louis van Gaal.

"We have never played as good this season as in the first half but we just did not score enough goals. A top team is not allowed to lose the grip on a game in just 10 minutes," he told reporters.

Despite Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and captain Mark van Bommel still out injured, Bayern, who advanced to the Champions League round of 16 in midweek with two games to spare, looked to have enough firepower against bottom-placed Borussia.

But in a frantic second half, Gladbach, transformed by the introduction of Brazil-born Belgian Igor de Camargo, outplayed the visitors, exposing their chronic defensive weaknesses.

Marco Reus combined well with the Belgian to level in the 56th minute and the roles were reversed four minute later as De Camargo fired them into the lead after Reus sent a pin-point through ball with defender Daniel van Buyten a step too late.

Lahm, who this week agreed to stay on at the champions until 2016, equalised with a well-taken chip from the right to take some pressure of Van Gaal, following his squabble with club boss Uli Hoeness over the team's performance.

MAINZ DEFEAT

Lacklustre Mainz 05 failed to take a provisional lead at the top slumping to defeat at Freiburg to remain in second place on 24 points.

Freiburg's top scorer Papiss Demba Cisse converted a 64th minute penalty to inflict Mainz's third defeat of the season. Niko Bungert had fouled Freiburg's Oliver Barth to concede the penalty.

Bundesliga top scorer Theofanis Gekas struck twice to take his tally to 11 and help third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt sink VfL Wolfsburg 3-1.

The Greek striker notched a goal in each half to keep Frankfurt's fine start to the season going and pile further pressure on Wolfsburg coach Steve McClaren, whose team remain in 12th place on 13 points.

Hamburg SV came from a goal down to beat Hoffenheim 2-1 with Croat Mladen Petric grabbing an 83rd minute winner that lifted his team to sixth place on 18 points.

On Friday, Schalke 04 got their first home win of the season when two goals from Raul and one from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar gave them a 3-0 win and lifted them to 15th place on nine points.

United leave it late to beat Wolves

Sun, Nov 07 10 12:16 AM

A stoppage-time winner by Park Ji-Sung helped Manchester United close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea to two points on Saturday as they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Old Trafford.

South Korean Park had given United a first half lead but Wolves substitute Sylvan Ebanks-Blake replied after the break and it had looked like being a frustrating day for United who lost midfielder Owen Hargreaves five minutes into his comeback.

Unbeaten United moved above Arsenal into second spot with 23 points from 11 games, two behind Chelsea who play Liverpool on Sunday. Arsenal, who have 20, are also in action on Sunday against Newcastle United.

Tottenham Hotspur fell to earth with a thud after their midweek Champions League win over Inter Milan, losing 4-2 at Bolton Wanderers who moved above the London club to fifth thanks to two goals by Kevin Davies.

Bottom club West Ham United threw away a 2-0 lead at Birmingham City to draw 2-2 while Everton and Blackpool also shared four goals.

Asamoah Gyan scored twice for Sunderland in a 2-0 defeat of Stoke City while Fulham equalised late in a 1-1 home draw with Aston Villa. Blackburn Rovers beat Wigan Athletic 2-1.

WAGs to be with Australian cricketers during Ashes

Sat, Nov 06 10 10:26 PM

Melbourne, Nov 6 (PTI) Australian cricketers'' wives and girlfriends have been allowed to join their partners for the Ashes series this summer, a decision which starkly contrasts with England''s policy of banning WAGs for the first six weeks of the tour beginning November 25 in Adelaide. In a decision by Cricket Australia (CA), the Australian players will be able to have their families stay with them at the team''s accommodation whenever they want, the ''Herald Sun'' reported. The decision came after CA commissioned research from relationship and social experts which revealed having WAGs on tour eased the strain on family life and was a positive move for harmony. But the issue has been a major flashpoint in the past - primarily during Australia''s disappointing 2005 Ashes loss in England. CA is convinced the benefits outweigh the negatives so WAGs such as Jessica Bratich (Mitchell Johnson''s fiancee), Lee Furlong (Shane Watson''s wife) and Rianna (Ricky Ponting''s wife) will be regular fixtures during the Ashes. Australia''s players will be staying at family-friendly apartment-style accommodation in every venue and the WAGs can stay as long as they pay for incidental costs such as breakfast and room service. "We have talked to a broad range of experts and decided this is a very good thing," a CA insider said. "Cricket is an unusual sport, the players in the Australian team can be away from their home either training, playing or travelling for as many as 320 days a year if they play all three forms of cricket. "They have to have some semblance of a normal family life and CA is very supportive of the work-life balance," the person added. Incidentally, last month, England cricket team''s director Andy Flower had barred the players from seeing their wives and girlfriends for the first six weeks of the Ashes tour in Australia. England captain Andrew Strauss had insisted that the tourists have made the right decision to make Australia a WAG-free zone for at least the opening two Ashes Tests. It is the first time the England players'' families have been barred from being part of a tour since England visited Zimbabwe and New Zealand in 1996-97. England''s ban appears to have been sparked by the fact that their WAGs were in Australia throughout England''s humiliating 5-0 Ashes whitewash by Australia in 2006-07. PTI SHN SSC

Hargreaves suffers injury on long-awaited return

Sat, Nov 06 10 10:18 PM

Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves limped off five minutes into his first start for two years on Saturday after returning for the home Premier Lesague clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Canadian-born England international, plagued by knee tendinitis since joining from Bayern Munich for around 17 million pounds in 2007, was given a rousing reception at Old Trafford but limped off with what appeared to be a muscular injury and was replaced by Bebe.

Hargreaves last started for United in September 2008 against Chelsea and had made just one brief appearances as a substitute since then at the end of last season.

The 29-year-old has travelled to the United States on several occasions to try and cure the chronic knee problems that have stalled his club and international career.

United can reduce Chelsea's Premier League lead to two points if they beat Wolves at Old Trafford. Chelsea are away at Liverpool on Sunday.

Bolton withstand late rally to beat Tottenham

Sat, Nov 06 10 09:58 PM

Tottenham Hotspur fell to earth with a thud on Saturday after their midweek Champions League win over Inter Milan, losing 4-2 at Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League despite a furious late rally.

Two goals by Kevin Davies helped Bolton into a deserved 3-0 lead with less than 15 minutes remaining before spectacular efforts by Alan Hutton and Roman Pavlyuchenko set up an unexpectedly gripping finale in the lunchtime kickoff.

Davies fired Bolton in front after 31 minutes with a low shot into the corner and Icelandic right back Gretar Steinsson, who stifled the threat of Tottenham's man of the moment Gareth Bale throughout, doubled the lead early in the second half with a well-worked goal.

Tottenham appeared set for a drubbing when Davies made it 3-0 from the penalty spot but Hutton gave them hope in the 79th minute with a curler into the top corner.

Pavlyuchenko cut the deficit further with a superb angled volley three minutes from time but as Tottenham pressed forward in stoppage time Martin Petrov sealed the points on the counter-attack to put Bolton ahead of Spurs into fifth place.

With leaders Chelsea not in action until Sunday, Manchester United can close the gap to two points later when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Seven out of eight members who quit retained in GCA-fold

Sat, Nov 06 10 08:22 PM

Panaji, Nov 6 (PTI) Four days after the en-mass resignation drama, Goa Cricket Association (GCA) retained most of its executive committee members while ousting its vice president Chetan Desai from the committee. In a circular issued today, GCA amended its executive committee giving posts back to seven out of eight members, who had resigned in the wake of recent duplicate ticket scam. GCA''s executive committee led by Dayanand Narvekar was embroiled after the controversy over duplicate tickets for the rain washed one day international between India and Australia on October 24 surfaced. Narvekar had claimed it as "negligence by some of its committee members." On November 2, all the eight office bearers of the executive committee had resigned reposing their faith in Narvekar. The committee, which was reconstituted today, dropped Chetan Desai and replaced him with Zamir Corot. Vinod Fadke, who was the treasurer, was shifted to vice president''s post while Amaresh Naik was promoted from joint secretary''s post to treasurer.

Fans predict defeat of Australian team in the Ashes

Sat, Nov 06 10 08:16 PM

Melbourne, Nov 6 (PTI) The Aussie fans seem to have lost all faith in their national cricket team as a nationwide online survey has thrown up verdict that Australia would not win the Ashes this time around. While a lot of fans still hoped that Australia would regain the Ashes, but 56 per cent believe the Poms will defeat the them on home soil for the first time since 1986-87. In a poll conducted by the Sunday Herald Sun online, more than 6000 fans took part, with questions ranging from the make-up of the team for the first Test at the Gabba, starting on November 25, to whether there is too much cricket being played. The people blamed the selectors for Aussie team sliding to No 5 position in the world Test rankings. The poll also showed that they believe that coach Tim Nielsen is a failure and should be replaced by Shane Warne. Besides, an overwhelming 74 per cent said that Michael Clarke should not become the next Test captain. And while Michael Hussey remained a line-ball selection but Marcus North, who only last week was projected as a future captain, did not get fans'' support. In fact, people''s verdict said that he did not even deserve to be in the team, with 69 per cent of them saying that he should be dropped. Meanwhile, 85 per cent voted against Nathan Hauritz as the spin bowling answer for Australia and instead chose young gun Steve Smith as the preferred option. In other shocking responses, the fans preferred Cameron White to take over Test captaincy from Ricky Ponting. Also, they voted England''s under-fire batsman Kevin Pietersen as Australia''s biggest danger, just ahead of spinner Graeme Swann. The other poll results showed that it was time for the selectors to show some faith in youngsters, with more than 82 per cent claiming Australia must promote youth in this summer''s Test series against England. .

Don't be too arrogant about Ashes, Warne warns England

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 07:52 PM

Australia's woeful one-day run is no indicator of their Test form, says spin legend Shane Warne who has warned England against taking Ricky Ponting's men lightly in the upcoming Ashes series.

"The attitude among my English friends has a bit more sarcasm, more lip, more arrogance, but they should just calm down," Warne was quoted as saying by the newspapers here.

"Not a ball's been bowled yet, but every (Englishman) seems to think the Ashes are theirs already," he added.

Australia have been on the slide in one-dayers and lost an series in India before suffering defeats in the ongoing series against Sri Lanka.

But Warne felt the Aussies are known fighters and will bounce back come the Ashes, which start November 25 in Brisbane.

"Australia have only lost a couple of home series in 20 years and the history of the Ashes series that I've been involved in, it always brings the best out of you. If England think they're going to walk away with an easy victory, that's the wrong attitude," he said.

"England have a good attack in home conditions, but Jimmy Anderson's record in Australia is horrible; the ball doesn't swing after 10 overs and there's no reverse," he added.

"They will rely a lot on Graeme Swann. He'll love being the man with the ball, but if England are going to win they need him to take 25 wickets plus."

Warne said the one-day slump may in fact be a blessing in disguise for the Aussies.

"In a way it might be good for the Australian team. Wherever they're going everyone's saying what's going wrong, why is Australia playing so badly - all of those questions might give them a lift. They might get sick of hearing it," he said.

London Police submits more evidence in spot fixing scandal

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 07:46 PM

Investigation into spot fixing scandal involving three Pakistan cricketers has gathered pace with London police submitting a second file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The documents claimed that trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer -- currently suspended from international cricket by the ICC -- accepted bribes to engage in spot-fixing during the fourth Test against England at Lord's in August, 'The Guardian' reported.

Scotland Yard said evidence that there was a conspiracy to defraud bookmakers will be considered by the CPS, although the investigation remains ongoing.

Detectives interviewed four players (Butt, Asif, Aamer and Wahab Riaz) under caution and arrested the businessman Mazhar Majeed as part of the inquiry. Majeed is accused of accepting 150,000 pounds to fix the actions of several players during a Test at Lord's.

"The Metropolitan Police has today delivered a second file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service in connection with the investigation of alleged offences in relation to the fourth Test at Lord's Cricket Ground on 26 August. The file will now be subject to CPS consideration," a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

British tabloid 'News of the World' had shook the cricket world with a sting operation which had suspected bookmaker Majeed claiming that he paid bribes to three cricketers for sending down no-balls during the Lord's Test.

Scotland Yard is also carrying out a separate investigation into the case and has spoken to the three players and Majeed.

After the Test series, the third One-dayer at the Oval also came under suspicion but the ICC later cleared the match of any wrongdoing.

The ICC's code of conduct commission had also rejected appeals by Butt and Aamer against their suspensions last Sunday. The next stage will be a hearing by the anti-corruption tribunal into details of the fixing case. Asif had withdrawn his appeal.

Ryder, Williamson star in New Zealand fightback

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 07:26 PM

Ahmedabad, Nov 6 (IANS) Jesse Ryder carved out a magnificent third Test hundred and along with debutant Kane Williamson defied the Indian attack as New Zealand ended the third day at 331 for five in the first cricket Test here Saturday.

Incidentally, all the Test centuries of Ryder have come against India. The burly batsman, who was playing his first Test in 14 months, was involved in a 194-run stand for the fifth wicket with Williamson as Indian bowlers toiled hard for two sessions without much success.

The New Zealand pair's partnership was broken off the last ball of the day when S.Sreesanth trapped Ryder leg before, two deliveries after he brought up his century in style, smacking the ball to the covers for a boundary, and pumping his fist and beating his chest in jubiliation.

Ryder, who had Ross Taylor as a runner for the latter half of his 205-ball knock, hit 10 fours and a six.

At stumps, Williamson was batting at 87 with visitors still 156 runs behind India's first innings total.

The day clearly belonged to the Black Caps, who fought back from a precarious 148 for four at lunch after losing their two set batsmen Brendon McCullum (65) and Ross Taylor (56) in quick succession.

Ryder and Williamson dug their heels in to peg New Zealand back into the Test, which was dominated by India on the first two days. The two batmen bided their time with caution before lunch but looked at home once the second session began.

Ryder played a responsible innings which was punctuated with a flurry of boundaries. He reached his half-century the way he notched up his hundred, sweeping a Tendulkar full toss for a four. It was Ryder's fifth Test hundred and came in 96 balls.

He, however, was spared a life at the individual score of 11 when Rahul Dravid fudged a shoulder high catch at the first slip off S.Sreesanth.

The 20-year-Williamson, who is touted as an exciting prospect and scored his maiden one-day century during the recent tour of Bangladesh, impressed with his stroke play and footwork.

He provided a good support to Ryder as they maneuvered their way towards avoiding a follow-on, which looked a possibility after the first session.

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni fast ran out of option. He drafted in Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina to increase his spin options. Even Sachin Tendulkar rolled his arms for a couple of overs to break the deadlock but the two young Black Caps proved to be a determined lot.

Earlier, Indian spinners Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha removed McCullum and Taylor to press home advantage.

Resuming at 69 for two, McCullum and Taylor batted with purpose and runs came lucidly during their 104-run partnership for the third wicket.

After a cautious start, McCullum cut loose and produced some delectable strokes despite the turn in the wicket. His 50 came off 94 balls with nine fours. Taylor followed suit and suddenly the runs flowed thick and fast. Taylor brought up his 50 off 112 balls with six boundaries.

It was then Taylor flicked a Harbhajan delivery to the mid-wicket region to V.V.S. Laxman and departed with hand on his head in disappointment. His knock came off 124 balls and included six fours.

A bigger set-back followed when McCullum failing to judge a Ojha delivery was stumped by Dhoni. His innings came in 122 deliveries and included 11 fours.

We bowled well on a flat track, says Sreesanth

Sat, Nov 06 10 06:58 PM

S S Ramaswamy Ahmedabad, Nov 6 (PTI) After being defied by young New Zealand batsmen Jesse Ryder and debutant Kane Williamson for almost two full sessions on Day III of the first Test here, India''s new ball bowler Shantakumaran Sreesanth maintained that the home team bowlers had performed well on the flat track at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, today. "It was a flat track. We bowled very well but there was nothing for the bowlers. There was no reverse swing too," said the temperamental Kerala bowler who finally broke the defiant fifth wicket stand by sending back 26-year-old left-hander Ryder, with the third ball of the 118th over. New Zealand, riding on half centuries from more experienced batsmen Brendon McCullum (65) and Ross Taylor (56) initially and then boosted by the superbly conceived 194-run partnership between Ryder (103) and 20-year-old Williamson (87 not out) ended the third day at 331 for 5 in reply to the home team''s first innings score of 487. Sreesanth also pointed out the reprieve Ryder got early on in his knock off his bowling when Rahul Dravid not only could not latch on to a thick edge from the batsman at first slip also helped Ryder cash in on the opportunity. "We should have had Ryder but for the dropped catch," he said about the chance floored when the Wellington-born Ryder was on 11 with team total on 166 for four in the seventh over of the second session. Ryder went on to slam ten boundaries and also stepped out to hit Harbhajan Singh over long on to cap his splendid 205-ball effort that took him a shade over five hours. Sreesanth maintained that although New Zealand trail by 156 runs at stumps, the hosts can still win the match as it will be difficult for New Zealand batsmen to negotiate spin twins Pragyan Ojha and Harbhajan in the fourth innings. "We will keep trying and give it our best shot. We can still force a win as it won''t be easy to face Harbhajan and Ojha on a fifth day wicket. Not to forget Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth," he said with a smile. He also complimented the New Zealand fifth wicket pair and said Ryder and debutant Williamson, who has faced 226 balls during his 281-minute stay. "Credit goes to them. They really played well," he said. Sreesanth also said there was nothing to worry about Dravid''s injury as the one-down stalwart had come back to field after having gone off it for a while to attend to his finger. "He''s absolutely fine. There should not be any problem," he explained.

Depressed Tevez visits psychiatrist

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 06:38 PM

London, Nov 6 (ANI): Manchester City captain Carlos Tevez made three secret visits to a psychiatrist after being allowed back to Argentina to see his family in a desperate bid to cure his depression.

Tevez, 26, is paid 150,000 pounds a week but is struggling with homesickness and losing interest in football because he is missing his two daughters Florencia, 5, and eight-month-old Katie.

Tenez, who separated from wife Vanesa, is dating Argentine actress Brenda Asnicar, 19, whose career prevents her from joining him in England.

Tevez is so upset about the situation that a close friend insisted: "Carlos is on the brink. He's really hurting and has begged his mind guru: Tell me why I am feeling like this?"

"He normally eats, sleeps and drinks football but his mind's in another place at the moment. It's tearing him apart being thousands of miles away from his children," The Sun quoted Tevez's friend, as saying.

The shock revelation comes after a tired Tevez stunned fans by insisting he could quit the game altogether after five Christmases without his family.

Tevez, currently out with an ankle injury, sought help during a 10-day break in Buenos Aires. (ANI)

London Police submits more evidence in spot fixing scandal

Sat, Nov 06 10 06:22 PM

London, Nov 6 (PTI) Investigation into spot fixing scandal involving three Pakistan cricketers has gathered pace with London police submitting a second file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service. The documents claimed that trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer -- currently suspended from international cricket by the ICC -- accepted bribes to engage in spot-fixing during the fourth Test against England at Lord''s in August, ''The Guardian'' reported. Majeed is accused of accepting 150,000 pounds to fix the actions of several players during a Test at Lord''s. "The Metropolitan Police has today delivered a second file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service in connection with the investigation of alleged offences in relation to the fourth Test at Lord''s Cricket Ground on 26 August. The file will now be subject to CPS consideration," a Metropolitan Police spokesman said. British tabloid ''News of the World'' had shook the cricket world with a sting operation which had suspected bookmaker Majeed claiming that he paid bribes to three cricketers for sending down no-balls during the Lord''s Test. Scotland Yard is also carrying out a separate investigation into the case and has spoken to the three players and Majeed. After the Test series, the third One-dayer at the Oval also came under suspicion but the ICC later cleared the match of any wrongdoing. The ICC''s code of conduct commission had also rejected appeals by Butt and Aamer against their suspensions last Sunday. The next stage will be a hearing by the anti-corruption tribunal into details of the fixing case. Asif had withdrawn his appeal.

Boris Becker ordered to pay wedding minister 1,200 pounds

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 05:26 PM

London, Nov 6 (ANI): A Swiss court has ordered Boris Becker to pay 1,200 pounds to the pastor who presided over his second wedding to the Dutch model Sharlely Kerssenberg in 2009, as a settlement of a long-running dispute.

Becker, a three-time Wimbledon tennis champion and six-time Grand Slam champion, was also charged 2,257 Swiss francs in legal fees at the hearing in Grison, according to his website, reports the Telegraph.

However the sum is much lower than that sought by the minister who claimed he was due a fee of some 9,600 francs. Becker had argued the cleric had given him an estimate of between 1,750 and 2,100 francs. (ANI)

Spot-fixing scandal: London police submits more evidence

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 05:18 PM

London, Nov 6 (IANS) London's Metropolitan Police has handed over more evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the alleged spot-fixing scandal during the fourth cricket Test between Pakistan and England at Lord's in August.

A second file of evidence was submitted to CPS Friday claiming Pakistani cricketers Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt were bribed by suspected bookie Mazhar Majeed for under-performing in the Test.

'The Metropolitan Police has today delivered a second file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service in connection with the investigation of alleged offences in relation to the fourth Test at Lord's Cricket Ground Aug 26. The file will now be subject to CPS consideration,' The Guardian quoted a Metropolitan Police spokesman as saying.

Earlier, the detectives interrogated four Pakistani players and arrested Majeed as part of the inquiry. Majeed is accused of accepting 150,000 pounds to fix moments during the fourth Test.

The inquiry will continue, the spokesman confirmed.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) upheld the provisional suspension of Aamer and Butt and dismissed their appeals against it last Sunday. Asif earlier decided to withdraw his appeal.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) followed it up by suspending the tainted trio's central contracts.

Ponting rubbishes 'made up' stories about Oz team disharmony

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 04:52 PM

Brisbane (Australia), Nov.6 (ANI): Ricky Ponting has angrily refuted "completely made up" reports of disharmony in the Australian cricket team as the crunch Ashes series looms.

"There's been a bit written hasn't there. I had a really close read of one of the articles that was written about it and some of the instances that were referred to in there were, as far as I'm concerned, just completely made up," The Age quoted Ponting, as saying.

"I'm not sure why they were written the way they were, but me being captain of the side, it's one of my jobs to make sure little things like that are handled in the right way. If there's any disharmony it's up to me to make sure I'm getting on top of it," he added.

"Some of those things reported were a long, long way from the mark," he said. (ANI)

Lampard backs uncle Redknapp to be England's next boss

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 04:22 PM

London, Nov 6 (ANI): England midfielder Frank Lampard has backed his uncle Harry Redknapp to succeed team boss Fabio Capello.

Capello set to relinquish the position after Euro 2012, and Tottenham's top of the line performance currently has brought Redknapp in the spotlight.

"If we're looking for a home-grown manager next, Harry's definitely the one. Six months ago people would have said Roy Hodgson, he was the favourite but not now," The Sun quoted Lampard, as saying.

"Harry's had such a great career. Look where he's taking Tottenham right now," he said.

"Who can argue with this week's performance against the European champions Inter Milan? And remember what he did at Portsmouth and West Ham before that," Lampard added.

Lampard, who played under Redknapp before he joined Chelsea, said: "Harry's the best choice. For me, it's got to be him."

"Obviously, I'd be very proud if he is the next England boss because of the family connection," he added. (ANI)

Ntini played the race card: former SA coach Mickey Arthur

Sat, Nov 06 10 03:58 PM

Johannesburg, Nov 6 (PTI) South African cricketer Makhaya Ntini played the race card when things did not go his way, disclosed former team coach Mickey Arthur in his to be released book. Ntini, hailed as the country''s greatest black cricketer, alleged racism by captain Graeme Smith and Arthur when he was dropped from the squad due to bad form, wrote Arthur in his book ''Taking the Mickey'', to be released on Monday. It comes just a week after the controversial autobiography of former South African star opener Herschelle Gibbs, in which he caused a stir with claims of sex orgies, drinking binges and drug-taking by South African team members. "Sadly, when (Ntini) finally lost form, and was left out on form (or the lack of it), he was quick to change his tune," Arthur says in an extract of the book published in the daily Saturday Star ahead of its release. "That was when I lost a bit of respect for Makhaya, and saw a side of him I never suspected existed. Everybody, especially senior players, is upset when they are dropped, but I was desperately disappointed when Makhaya started telling influential administrators that (captain) Graeme Smith and I didn''t want black players in the team. "I refused to believe what I was told, and dismissed it as vicious rumour-mongering." However Arthur added that he was in for a big shock when Doc Nyoka (president of Cricket South Africa and Ray Mali (former CSA president) invited him to a breakfast meeting with Ntini after the series against Bangladesh. The former coach also said that he could sympathise with the concerns of the two top administrators as they related how they were under pressure from government for there being no black player in the side. .

Ryder and Williamson lead NZ resistance

Sat, Nov 06 10 03:38 PM

A dogged partnership from Jesse Ryder and Kane Williamson took New Zealand close to the follow-on mark against India at tea on day three of the opening test.

Resuming on 69 for two on Saturday, the visitors were 237 for four at tea, needing 51 runs to avoid the follow-on.

Left-hander Ryder (53 not out) and debutant Williamson (45 not out) had already added 100 runs in their unbeaten fifth wicket partnership.

Ryder, who grew in confidence as his innings progressed, got a life on 11 when Rahul Dravid dropped him at a wide slip position off Shanthakumaran Sreesanth.

The 20-year old Williamson was particularly impressive with his footwork against the Indian spinners.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni utilised all his resources, including throwing the ball to Sachin Tendulkar to bowl his legspinners, but failed to break the partnership.

India's spinners picked up the wickets of Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor after their century stand for the third wicket before lunch.

McCullum (65) and Taylor (56), the most accomplished of New Zealand's batsmen in the touring side, stitched together a 104-run partnership before the latter drove straight to Vangipurappu Laxman at short-midwicket off Harbhajan Singh.

McCullum had looked solid, using his feet well against the spinners during his 122-ball stay at the wicket, and hit 11 boundaries in his knock.

However, he dragged his feet out trying to defend left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha's delivery that spun across his bat. Dhoni made no mistake behind the stumps.

Ex-Oz cricketer Jones calls for two coaches to ensure success

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 02:38 PM

Melbourne, Nov.6 (ANI): Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones has said that it is time for the Australian cricket team to have two separate coaches - one for the Test team and one coach for the one-day and Twenty20 teams.

"The team needs some inspiration and adrenalin and a new coach will provide it. The workload on Australian coach Tim Nielsen is enormous and if Cricket Australia wants to keep him in the job, then, they must split the role in two and lighten the load," Jones says in an article for The Age.

He believes that Australian cricket is far behind in its preparations for the Ashes.

"This Australian team needed a three-Test series against India and some four-day Sheffield Shield cricket before this Ashes series. This Sri Lankan tour was not required at all. If CA says we have to play them because of the Future Tours Program, then that's rubbish," Jones said.

"The workload imposed on this Australian team makes it almost impossible for Neilsen to prepare his squad properly for each series," Jones said, adding that "In 2009, Australia played 114 days of international cricket and this year they will play 99 days. That doesn't include IPL and touring matches. Throw in the constant travel and hotel rooms it can be hard work."

"So planning each player's calendar and workload is becoming increasingly demanding. A player simply cannot be on top of his game for 365 days a year," he adds.

"I don't know how they do it now with all the cricket they play now. I loved playing club cricket for Melbourne and Carlton. Sadly, no player can do that now. Tom Moody said to me recently that in his three years as coach of Western Australia he never had Michael Hussey or Mitchell Johnson play one game! Now that is sad, " Jones said.

He said time must be given to Neilsen to work on his players' form and then worry about the opposition and their strategies and tactics.

Neilsen also has to travel around the country visiting cricket academies and state squads and identifying talent along the way.

It is a massive job. Throw in the time away from the family and this job seems to have a short life or career span for anyone.

"All things considered, I think Neilsen has done an awesome job, but quite clearly he needs help. It was so tough on him in 2009 that he and his family needed a break and he took a holiday during the Ashes tour in England so he could re-generate his batteries. If Neilsen is tired and flat, the team will reflect his mood and energy."

"It's time Australia specialised by appointing coaches in two separate areas. My selection for the one-day/Twenty20 coach would be Victoria's coach Greg Shipperd. Shipperd is the best Twenty20 coach in the world," he concludes. (ANI)

Give proof of 2007 SA-Pak Lahore match being fixed or face legal action: PCB to Arthur

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 02:22 PM

Karachi, Nov 6 (ANI): Hitting back at former South Africa coach Mickey Arthur over his claims that a 2007 One-day International against Pakistan in Lahore might have been 'fixed,' the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has asked him to either prove his claims or face legal action.

"PCB has noted with concern the statement of former South African coach Mickey Arthur insinuating that a One-day International played at Lahore between Pakistan and South Africa in 2007 was fixed," The News quoted the PCB statement, as saying.

"PCB has decided to immediately serve a legal notice on Mickey Arthur asking him to share with PCB any evidence in this regard," said the statement.

It further warned that if he failed to provide any evidence in this regard, the "PCB and Pakistani players reserve the right to initiate legal proceedings against Arthur including but not limited to seeking unqualified apology, retraction and damages."

"PCB reiterates that it has a zero tolerance policy towards corruption in Cricket and will deal with any news concerning Pakistani Players with utmost importance and due care," the statement concluded.

PCB's legal advisor Taffazul Rizvi said that he would send a legal notice to Arthur first thing Monday morning. It is a stern move from a board that is often accused of inaction over major issues like the menace of match-fixing, the paper said.

Earlier this week, Arthur had created quite a stir by saying in an interview that he and his players suspected that a series-decider between Pakistan and South Africa at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore was 'fixed'.

"There was a strong suspicion of match-fixing and it took some of the gloss off the series win," Arthur had written in his book earlier.

"We did not have any proof, but when you have been involved in the game long enough you know when something is not right," he had added.

Meanwhile, Shoaib Malik, who was Pakistan's captain in that series, has rejected Arthur's claims as rubbish.

"His (Arthur's) claim is ridiculous and I don't understand why after all these years he suddenly remembered this now. I am really disappointed with his statement because I remember we were shattered after losing that match as we were in a strong position," Malik said in an interview.

"How seriously can you take such a statement after all these years? If they had suspicions, why did they keep quiet? He (Arthur) should have gone to the ICC anti-corruption unit. Why try to defame Pakistan cricket now?" he lamented. (ANI)

Cricket Australia dismisses concern over low turn out for ODI series

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 01:56 PM

Melbourne, Nov 6 (ANI): Dismissing concerns over poor crowd turn out for one-day series against Sri Lanka, Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland has maintained that one-day cricket was far from dead and still remains most popular among the fans.

Not more than 14,000 fans decided to watch the second ODI between Australian and Sri Lanka at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

It was only the third time in the past 20 years that the attendance had dropped below 20,000 for an ODI in Sydney.

"I think there are some trends there in respect to one-day cricket, but at the same time we've done a major review of one-day cricket in the past 12 months and it comes back clearly as the No.1 format of the game in terms of popularity amongst fans," Sutherland said.

"The challenge for us is balancing Tests, one-day cricket and Twenty20 (cricket)," The Daily Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

"But we've got confidence in one-day cricket and as the season progresses there will be very few questions about it because when we play England it will be a different story to playing Sri Lanka in early November," Sutherland said. (ANI)

Raul brace helps struggling Schalke 04 beat St Pauli

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 01:48 PM

Gelsenkirchen (Germany), Nov 6 (DPA) Spanish striker Raul scored a brace as struggling Bundesliga club Schalke 04 achieved only their second league victory of the season when they beat St Pauli 3-0.

Raul scored in each half, while Dutch international Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored the other for a victory that - at least momentarily - lifted last season's runners-up to 15th in the table and out of the relegation zone here Friday.

Schalke defender Christoph Metzelder, who celebrated his 30th birthday, said he thought the victory was very important. 'That was good for our points total, good for our confidence and good for the Schalke soul. It was a good evening.'

Raul, who was earlier in the week criticized by Schalke coach Felix Magath for not being dangerous enough in front of goal, could have given his side the lead in the 11th minute when his header went just over the bar.

Three minutes later the former Real Madrid player had the ball in the back of the net though after Huntelaar failed to connect with an Atsuto Uchida cross and the Spaniard managed to push the ball over the line from close range.

Raul received praise from Huntelaar. 'I think he showed today that he is very dangerous in front of goals.'

Deniz Naki had a good opportunity to equalize for the visitors five minutes from the break, but shot wide from seven metres. Just a few minutes later Dennis Daube came close again for the visitors with a direct free-kick.

Eight minutes after the restart Schalke extended their lead when Huntelaar's header, after a Jefferson Farfan corner, beat St Pauli goalkeeper Thomas Kessler.

St Pauli then came back into the game, but it was Raul that put the matter beyond doubt with only his third league goal of the season in the 81st minute from a Lukas Schmitz cross.

Kessler was disappointed with the game. 'We were not promoted into the Bundesliga to simply play. We want to compete and we need to now get over this and concentrate on our next match.'

Schalke now have nine points from their 11 games, while St Pauli are in 13th place on 13 points.

Table topping Borussia Dortmund are away to Hanover on Sunday, while Mainz 05, who are one point behind on 24 points, face SC Freiburg Saturday, knowing that a victory will equal the Bundesliga record of winning the opening five away matches.

Soul searching KP is bad news for Australia ahead of Ashes

Published>Sat, Nov 06 10 01:22 PM

Sydney, Nov.6 (ANI): England's star batsman Kevin Pietersen has arrived in Australia with his game in working order and purpose renewed, according to noted columnist Peter Roebuck.

"He comes back not as the frustrated boy out to prove a point but as a committed champion determined to demonstrate that the early period of astonishing achievement was merely the beginning," Roebuck writes in his column for the Sydney Morning Herald.

"He has made the right moves. Now comes the execution, and the revelation," Roebuck adds.

He believes that Pietersen's decision to go back to basics has allowed him to rediscover his focus since his forgettable role in the 2009 Ashes.

Pietersen is a cricketer in search of his game and a man in search of his life. At last he is starting to look in the right places. After two years spent in self-indulgent folly he has gone back to work. Last month he returned to his roots in Pietermaritzburg and played two matches for KwaZulu Natal. Evidently his mind is working properly again. Now he is working hard with his comrades in Perth, Roebuck says.

"By the look of things, the worst is behind him. He is a batsman of great deeds but not yet confirmed greatness. He has realised it is not enough. In the nick of time ambition has been rekindled," he adds.

At 30, Pietersen ought to be approaching the most productive period of his career. By and large batsmen reach their peaks between the ages of 27 and 35, when the brain has calmed down and while the eyes retain their luster.

Careers follow a predictable path, from natural ability, to setbacks and the knowledge it brings and onto the simpler world beyond, he concludes. (ANI)

Indian spinners bag crucial wickets before lunch

Sat, Nov 06 10 12:56 PM

India's spinners picked up the crucial wickets of Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor after their century stand for the third wicket to leave New Zealand struggling at lunch on day three of the opening test. Resuming on 69 for two on Saturday, the visitors were 148 for four at the end of the early session, still needing 140 runs to avoid the follow-on. Jesse Ryder (six) and debutant Kane Williamson (five) were at the crease.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni made no mistake behind the stumps.

The tourists' inexperienced batsmen have a tough task on a Sardar Patel Stadium wicket where the balls are turning and bouncing and occasionally keeping low.
