India's spinners picked up the crucial wickets of Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor after their century stand for the third wicket to leave New Zealand struggling at lunch on day three of the opening test. Resuming on 69 for two on Saturday, the visitors were 148 for four at the end of the early session, still needing 140 runs to avoid the follow-on. Jesse Ryder (six) and debutant Kane Williamson (five) were at the crease.
McCullum (65) and Taylor (56), the most accomplished of New Zealand's batsmen in the touring side, stitched together a 104-run partnership before the latter drove straight to Vangipurappu Laxman at short-midwicket off Harbhajan Singh.
McCullum had looked solid, using his feet well against the spinners during his 122-ball stay at the wicket, and hit 11 boundaries in his knock.
However, he dragged his feet out trying to defend left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha's delivery that spun across his bat. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni made no mistake behind the stumps.
The tourists' inexperienced batsmen have a tough task on a Sardar Patel Stadium wicket where the balls are turning and bouncing and occasionally keeping low.
