Yusuf says no to King of good times

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 11:29 AM

New Delhi, April 2 -- Is the King of beverages unable to land one of the biggest fishes of the Indian Premier League? If you observed one man closely during Wednesday night's match between the Delhi Daredevils and the Rajasthan Royals, you would have noticed something out of the ordinary. Yusuf Pathan, whose big hitting has been one of the biggest draws at the IPL, has the Kingfisher logo on his team shirt taped over. Kingfisher, which is known as a beer brand but has since diversified into several other things, co-sponsors several teams, aside from owning the Royal Challengers Bangalore. "It (Kingfisher) is an alcohol brand and consuming or promoting it goes against my personal religious beliefs," Yusuf told the Hindustan Times. While the rest of his teammates sport the logo, Yusuf's shirt had a distinct look, with the Kingfisher logo taped over. Yusuf, incidentally, has had a religious upbringing, having grown up in a Baroda mosque. His father was a muezzin - the man who gives call to muslim prayers. While Yusuf's gesture is unique in the IPL, it is not without precedent. South Africa's Hashim Amla, who is famous for his W.G. Grace-like beard and even scored at the grand old man's rate recently in India, sought his national board's permission to avoid using the Castle Lager (a beer brand) logo on his shirts. Though Castle are longstanding sponsors of the South African cricket team, the board readily granted Amla permission.

More foreign muscle to add extra spice to IPL

Published Fri, Apr 02 10 11:15 AM

India, April 1 -- We all have wondered in the last few weeks why the foreign quotient of the IPL isn't quite overflowing. Quite a few biggies have been missing but the situation is due to change shortly. It could have a dramatic effect on the fortunes of the teams. Now that the Australia-New Zealand cricket exchanges are over, the fans have reasons to look forward to the likes of Shane Watson, Doug Bollinger, Ross Taylor and Daniel Vettori. Brendon McCullum and Mike Hussey too have a platform to serve their fare. Elsewhere, Kevin Pietersen's arrival is being eagerly awaited. A few teams are in dire need for this dose of foreign adrenalin. The Kolkata Knight Riders have almost their complete line-up but McCullum can make a huge difference at the top. The team is at a critical stage of its campaign. A few wins could get it back on the rails. Their batting will get a huge fillip with McCullum's presence, who remains the highest scorer ever in the IPL. The Royal Challengers Bangalore, having slipped a notch below the Delhi Daredevils on the table, can only get stronger with Ross Taylor and Pietersen. Their bowling is already working fine with Anil Kumble, the indefatigable warrior, still proving impossible to get away. Praveen Kumar, despite the mauling in the last game, forms an effective pair with Vinay Kumar. And then there is Dale Steyn. Rajasthan Royals can really do with the presence of Watson. The hulk of an Australian all-rounder is a huge presence in all three departments of the game. The Royals, who now and then expose the frailty in their batting order, would be a side transformed with the return of Watson. Shaun Tait, Shane Warne and Waston can dig holes around any team.

The Chennai Super Kings too can make a late charge. Any team with Mahendra Singh Dhoni in its ranks should not be discounted.

Howard stands tall as Magic drop sluggish Mavs

Published Fri, Apr 02 10 10:55 AM

Dwight Howard made his presence felt with 17 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks to guide the Orlando Magic to a 97-82 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday.

Mickael Pietrus made all six of his three-point attempts and finished with 24 points off the bench, while Vince Carter returned from a toe injury to score 19 and help the Magic (53-22) to their third win in a row.

"I think we're starting to peak, which is good with the playoffs coming," Howard told reporters.

"I just want to win a championship and in order for us to win we have to stay consistent."

The Mavericks were playing for the second consecutive night and appeared sluggish, falling behind by seven points at halftime and 16 after three quarters.

Dirk Nowitzki had a team-high 24 points for Dallas (50-26) but was the only starter to score in double figures. Jason Terry and Jose Barea grabbed 16 points apiece from the bench.

The defeat saw Dallas fall into a tie with the Utah Jazz for the second in the Western Conference. Orlando are moving closer to clinching the second seed in the East and have won 14 of their last 16.

The Magic made 14 of 24 three-pointers and got major contributions from two players coming back from injury.

Pietrus had missed time with an ankle problem while Carter had to leave Sunday's game against Denver shortly after it started.

Dallas, who went to overtime against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, shot just 38 percent from the field and saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.

"We don't make excuses. The schedule is the schedule," said Dallas coach Rick Carlisle. "Last year we caught them on a back-to-back at their place, so these things happen."

Scoring points should be just a matter of time: Sutil

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 10:25 AM

Adrian Sutil's reaction ranges from an indulgent smile to a mild laughter as he walks into the Force India cafeteria at the paddock, where the team mechanics, working overtime to assemble the car, have gathered to catch a breath and some juice.

Sutil has posted two failures in two races so far, after qualifying 10th in both. He collided with Robert Kubica in Bahrain to finish outside the points, while a mechanical problem did him in at the Australian GP.

But if he is disappointed, it doesn't show. Luck has seldom favored him on the tracks, and he has learnt the hard way to leave nothing to chance. No wonder then that instead of fretting over the 'DNF' against his name at Albert Park in Melbourne on Sunday, he wasted no time and caught the first available flight to Malaysia for the next Grand Prix.

"I came to Malaysia on the very day the race ended. Two races in eight days is tough but it's tough on all of us," says Sutil, speaking to The Indian Express. "I did some kayaking and sailing. It's a good work-out and it also refreshes you mentally. I also trained hard in the heat - Sepang is a taxing circuit because of the heat and humidity, drivers can lose a lot of weight during the race. So I tried to get acclimatised."

First up on his agenda for the weekend is Q3. Since the second half of the 2009 season, Sutil has been consistent on Saturdays, making qualifying a norm. The expectations, therefore, are more in 2010 and the German knows that - he, in fact, is relishing it.

"What happened to me in the previous two races can happen to anybody. Sometimes it happens in practice or qualifying and you just shake off the dust and carry on. Sometimes these things happen during the race and you can't do anything about it. Anyway, I don't think about luck or hard luck. I just want to go there and give my best shot. With this kind of performance, I think, scoring points should be a matter of time.

"I know all of us are expecting a lot more from the team than we did previously, but that pressure is a good thing. In fact there is more pressure when you stay at the back of the grid. Because if you stay there for too long, your career is over."

Checkered record

One piece of statistic that might bother Sutil right now is his record in Sepang - two retirements and one 15th-place finish when torrential rain ended the affair abruptly after 33 laps (unlucky again as he moved up from 18th exploiting the wet conditions). But those were the days of old engine. The new VJM03 is a vastly improved car and the team don't have to pray for the skies to open up to be competitive.

"With this car we don't need to hope every time that it rains. We can achieve good results in dry weather as well. Sepang is the kind of circuit which is expected to have less amount of action than the Albert Park - that doesn't mean it will be like Bahrain, you won't have too many overtakes, but you'll have some. It again means that Q3 will be all the more important," he says.

Ochoa rebounds from La Costa disappointment

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 07:55 AM

World number one Lorena Ochoa shrugged off a disappointing display at last week's LPGA Tour event by surging into contention for the Kraft Nabisco Championship on Thursday.

The long-hitting Mexican took advantage of ideal scoring conditions at a sun-splashed Mission Hills Country Club and putted superbly to end the first round of the year's opening major one stroke off the pace.

Former champion Ochoa narrowly missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the final green to join Norway's Suzann Pettersen in a tie for the lead but she was otherwise delighted to card a four-under 68.

"It was a good day for sure," the smiling Mexican told reporters after a round featuring six birdies and two bogeys. "I made a really good par on the first hole and then I birdied the second to keep my momentum going.

"I was happy to see that because it's been hard the last few weeks. Tomorrow hopefully we'll go for a continuation."

Ochoa, a winner of 27 LPGA Tour titles, finished tied for 52nd at last week's Kia Classic at La Costa, California after closing with scores of 76 and 75.

On Thursday, however, she oozed confidence at a venue that ranks among her favourites on the circuit and where she romped to victory by a commanding five shots in 2008.

GOOD FEELING

"I really like to be here," Ochoa said. "I look forward all year to be here. It's just a good feeling for me."

The popular Mexican, who has more than 50 friends and members of her family supporting her this week, was especially pleased with her form on the slick greens at Mission Hills.

"My putting was good," the 28-year-old said. "Early in the round, I saved a couple of pars from about 12-15 feet and I was really happy to see the ball going in.

"And then I started making birdies at the end of the front (nine) and starting on the back. I was putting for birdie on a lot of holes, and that was key for me.

"Tomorrow, if I do the same, I should be in very good shape."

Ochoa, wearing white shorts, a red shirt and light sweater, came agonisingly close to her seventh birdie of the day, her attempt on the 18th green shaving the right edge of the cup.

"I was playing the right edge and I hit it a little bit right, but I still had hope," the double major winner said. "It was looking like it wanted to turn but it just stayed on the right side."

Berdych to meet Soderling in Miami semis

Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic returns a shot to Spain's Fernando Verdasco during their...

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 07:35 AM

Czech Tomas Berdych fought back from a set down to beat Spain's Fernando Verdasco 4-6 7-6 6-4 on Thursday and set up a Sony Ericsson Open semi-final against Robin Soderling.

Berdych, the number 16 who eliminated top seed Roger Federer in the previous round, struggled in the opening set but came out on top in the tiebreak in the second and produced an aggressive display in the deciding third set.

After another impressive win, Berdych will be confident of getting through to Sunday's final. Andy Roddick and Rafa Nadal will meet in Friday's first semi-final.

"The start was quite slow for me because I was still feeling a little bit tired after the long, long match against Roger that finished late in the night," Berdych said.

"But then finally I found my rhythm, started to play really well and I think the beginning of the third set Fernando was struggling a bit and maybe he was maybe a little bit tired -- that was my advantage. I'm very happy that I used it and got through."

The Czech broke with a superb backhand crosscourt pass in the seventh game of the final set and from that point there was little doubt about the outcome, with 10th seed Verdasco blasting the ball but lacking control.

"I was feeling that I can play the long rallies so I was just trying to keep the ball in play as long as I could and just to give him the chance to make an error -- most of the time that worked," he said.

Berdych next faces Soderling, who scored a 6-1 6-4 win over Russian Mikhail Youzhny.

The fifth-seeded Swede suffered a break on his first serve but recovered in splendid fashion to win the next six games.

Neither player could establish control on serve in the second set, with the first three games all going against serve, but Soderling did enough to run out a comfortable winner in the end.

Flawless Pettersen takes control at Kraft Nabisco

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 07:15 AM

Norway's Suzann Pettersen moved into a one-stroke lead at the Kraft Nabisco Championship on Thursday, a month after withdrawing from an event in Australia because of a hip injury.

The world number four recorded five birdies on the way to a five-under-par 67 in the opening women's major of the year.

The blonde Pettersen surged to the top of the leaderboard with a superb driving display on one of the LPGA Tour's longest courses, the 6,702-yard layout at Mission Hills Country Club.

World number one Lorena Ochoa of Mexico, winner here in 2008, narrowly missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th for a share of the lead and had to settle for a six-birdie 68.

Twice champion Karrie Webb of Australia carded a 69 to finish in a group of seven players including South Koreans Min Na-on and Kim Song-hee, Britain's Becky Brewerton and Yani Tseng of Taiwan.

"It was a very good, solid round of golf and I could not ask for a better start," Pettersen, 28, told reporters after covering her last nine holes in two-under 34.

"I had a few good bounces out there but I am feeling very good with my driver, which helps around this place. Plus I am making a few putts so it was very stress-free golf today."

A top-five finisher here for the last three years, the Norwegian was delighted to be back in competition following her withdrawal from last month's ANZ Ladies Masters.

HIP PAIN

"I'm pain-free now so that's the most important thing," said Pettersen, who pulled out on the eve of the Ladies European Tour-sanctioned event due to pain in her left hip.

"It was a little flare on the bone. They thought it was bursitis because the symptoms were very, very similar. I got it checked out and they didn't really find much.

"I got a cortisone shot and that helped a little bit. It healed just in time to come here," added the Norwegian, who won her first major title at the 2007 LPGA Championship.

"Now I'm starting to feel really good about how my game is looking and feeling."

Although the final nine holes of Pettersen's round unfolded under blue skies in dazzling desert sunshine, she had teed off in surprisingly bleak conditions.

"It got really cold as we warmed up and I thought I was going to ski, the way I was dressed," she joked. "But once the sun came out it was beautiful and the wind stayed down.

"This course is in such very, very good shape so it's a pleasure to be out there."

Fan favourite Michelle Wie, who has posted three top-10s at this event, opened with a 71. The American played well from tee to green but had a poor day with the flat stick, finishing with a total of 33 putts.

Benfica beat 10-man Liverpool, Wolfsburg lose

Benfica's Oscar Cardozo celebrates his goal against Liverpool during their Europa League quarter-final, first leg...

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 06:55 AM

Benfica's Paraguay forward Oscar Cardozo converted two second-half penalties to help them come from behind and beat 10-man Liverpool 2-1 as the Europa League dished up more drama in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

The other three first-leg ties also produced plenty of twists and turns on another exciting night in a competition often derided as the poor relation of European club football.

Ruud van Nistelrooy's winner gave Hamburg SV a 2-1 success at home to Standard Liege, the Germans also coming from behind, while David Villa scored a late equaliser to help Valencia draw 2-2 at home to Atletico Madrid in an all-Spanish clash.

Fulham -- who thumped Juventus 4-1 at home in the last round to reach their first European quarter-final - continued their fine run with a 2-1 victory over German champions VfL Wolfsburg whose late goal took the gloss off the home side's performance.

"We have got to be happy that the European adventure is very much alive here at Craven Cottage and we have taken another very famous scalp along the way," said Fulham manager Roy Hodgson.

GREAT START

The match was billed as one of the west London club's biggest but Liverpool felt very differently about their trip to the Estadio da Luz to face Benfica in a clash of two former European champions.

Rafael Benitez's team, in real danger of missing out on qualifying for next year's Champions League, are looking on the Europa League as a mere consolation in a miserable season.

Liverpool were given a great start when Daniel Agger's skilful flick silenced the home crowd after nine minutes.

But their evening began to unravel after half an hour when their Netherlands forward Ryan Babel was sent off for a shove in the face of Benfica defender Luisao.

The hosts, starting with seven South Americans, equalised in the 59th minute when Cardozo buried a harshly-awarded penalty after Emiliano Insua tangled with Pablo Aimar.

Cardozo produced a repeat 20 minutes later, again finding the bottom right corner of Pepe Reina's goal after Jamie Carragher had blocked an Angel di Maria cross with his arm.

Benitez told reporters: "Always when decisions are against a team you don't like it but because you cannot change them now the only way is to try be positive and... think about our fans behind the team and to play with all the players at Anfield."

Several firecrackers were thrown onto the pitch and the referee threatened to stop play after one had left a large hole in the turf near the touchline.

FORLAN STRIKES

Hamburg, whose stadium will host the final, fell behind when Democratic Republic of Congo striker Dieudonne Mbokani was left free at a corner and scored with a powerful header in the 31st.

Ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Van Nistelrooy hit the post and then shot wide from 12 metres before Croatia forward Mladen Petric levelled with a 42nd minute penalty.

Three minutes later, Van Nistelrooy got in front of his marker to guide Dennis Aogo's cross home from six metres.

"We thought they would stay back in defence but they played good football," said the Dutch striker. "I think we played well and got a good result which leaves everything open."

Valencia and Atletico Madrid produced a thriller for the 55,000 crowd at the Mestalla.

Uruguay forward Diego Forlan broke the deadlock in the 59th minute for Atletico, tapping in after Sergio Aguero had done the hard work.

Manuel Fernandes quickly replied for Valencia with a long-range effort in the 67th but Atletico captain Antonio Lopez headed the visitors back in front five minutes later.

Villa, set to lead Spain's attack at the World Cup and scorer of a brilliant hat-trick in the previous round at Werder Bremen, swept home Vicente's cross in the 82nd to equalise.

Striker Bobby Zamora belted Fulham in front after 59 minutes at Craven Cottage and Ireland winger Damien Duff struck again soon afterwards following further good work by Zamora.

Alexander Madlung headed Wolfsburg's reply in the 89th minute.

"It gives them a bit more of a chance because it's an away goal, having said that we still won the game and I thought we were fully deserving of the victory," said Hodgson. "It was a bit of a dampener coming so late in the game."

FEATURE - Green and gold floods the streets of Manchester

Manchester United supporters hold anti-Glazer banners during their Champions League last 16, second leg soccer...

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 06:15 AM

Manchester United home match days are an apt reminder of the conflicts that burned in the city at the heart of the industrial revolution and the birth of socialism.

Street pedlars now ply not only the traditional red shirts and scarves of one of the world's best-known clubs but also the green and gold colours of the Newton Heath works team.

Newton Heath, United's predecessors, were founded by railway workers in 1878, a decade before the world's first football league was instituted in Manchester's Royal Hotel.

Their colours are now increasingly prominent on match days at Old Trafford in a direct protest against the Florida-based Glazer family who bought the club in 2005.

After United's sweeping 4-0 Champions League win over AC Milan last month, they also dominated the newspapers and TV news bulletins when returning hero David Beckham stooped to pick up a green and gold scarf and wrapped it around his neck.

Beckham, who had come on as a substitute for the Italian side, had lingered on the pitch to acknowledge the applause from supporters of the club he left seven years ago.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) is behind the green-and-gold protest and chief executive Duncan Drasdo told Reuters that Beckham's gesture had been a superb piece of public relations.

"Fantastic," he said. "It was really just an emotional response for him, reaching out to supporters and showing them he was with them.

"The green-and-gold thing has been tremendous for the atmosphere in the ground. It's made people feel reinvigorated about what it is to support a football team.

"I think people were feeling pretty disillusioned, supporters were feeling exploited about the loyalty they once felt towards their club."

Drasdo said MUST, which has just under 150,000 members, up from 36,000 two months ago, had been partially responsible for an announcement last month that the club had frozen ticket prices after a series of bitterly resented hikes.

PEOPLE POWER

"This clearly demonstrates the power supporters have when they come together as a unified group," he said.

"We know from sources inside the club the Glazers are very concerned about the growing green and gold campaign. I think that was a major step forward for us.

"It could be a combination of things of course, the campaign that has been going on inside the ground, the growing membership of a serious organisation, obviously that has created the uncertainty whether they could push through another price rise.

"I think they judged they couldn't," added Drasdo.

The reclusive Glazers have also angered fans by increasing the club's debt burden.

In response, a group of financiers calling themselves the Red Knights have met to discuss buying the club from the Glazers even though the Americans have steadfastly maintained United are not for sale.

Last week the Red Knights said they would continue to work on proposals but ruled out any approach to the Glazers before the end of the season.

Two years ago there was another reminder of Manchester's reputation as a spawning ground for industrialists and financiers to amass vast wealth after the explosion of the cotton industry at the start of the 19th century.

Representatives of the Al Nahyan dynasty, which has ruled Abu Dhabi since the 18th century, bought Manchester City, traditionally United's poor relations, in 2008 and transformed their finances.

CITY SCORN

There is no love lost between the two sets of Manchester fans and on the day of the AC Milan match City supporters showed no sympathy for United's ownership protests.

"Did the nasty Americans promise to win you the Champions League, the Premier League and the FA Cup every year until the end of time but instead ... made you a laughing stock,?" said one City fan browsing in his club's shop.

"If they are really bothered why don't they just form their own club,?" he added, referring to the breakaway FC United minor league club formed by fans disillusioned by the Glazer takeover.

"Oh, hang on, they did that and nobody noticed."

The winds of change may be about to sweep through both clubs, though.

UEFA president Michel Platini said on Monday he supported a plan by Britain's ruling Labour party to allow fans to buy stakes in their teams.

According to a report in The Guardian newspaper, under a proposal in the party's manifesto for the general election expected on May 6, fans could take up to a 25 percent stake in a club to ease concerns over increasing levels of debt and foreign ownership.

Drasdo also supports the schemes.

"We're approaching all parties to see what sort of interest there is in terms of putting something into a manifesto commitment over the election, the ownership of football clubs," he said.

"What we are particularly interested in is a right-to-buy. The Scottish crofters had something like this when they had absentee landlords.

"The right to purchase shares at a fair price and have some say in the way their clubs are run and get some transparency on the way things are run financially," added Drasdo.

"Football clubs aren't ordinary businesses so they shouldn't be treated that way."

Wins for Pune FC 'B', Shantinagar

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 05:01 AM

Shantinagar FC and Pune FC secured easy victories in their matches against Detroits FC and Eagle FC respectively at the Pune District Football League on Thursday.

The matches, which were played at the Rangehills Ground in Khadki, treated the spectators to some good football.

According to a press note, Shantinagar, which looked in fine touch, rode on some exemplary field passing from their players to ensure that their opponents did not get a chance to get ahead. Shantinagar began dominating the proceedings in the first five minutes of the match, as they began to make rapid runs throughout the right and left flanks of the Detriots team. ]

In the eighth minute, a brilliant run by mid-fielder Amit Ranpise saw the ball land deftly at the feet of Sunny Patole, who after running through an un-coordinated defence, gave his team the lead.

In the second half, though the Detroits were ahaed in terms of ball possession, a 36 th minute blunder on the part of their mid-fielders saw Asif Sheikh run away with the ball, who once again found Sunny Patole unmarked.

Patole doubled his team's lead and they held on till the final whistle.

In another match, the Pune FC 'B' team managed to pull off a slender 1-0 victory against a stronger Eagle FC team. Atif Sheikh of the PFC team in the 35th minute scored a good goal when he received a pass from forward Vikas Chavan, which turned the game in their favour.

The third match between Hasten FC and Smackers FC ended in a stalemate, with both sides failing to break the deadlock.

Today's fixtures:

Pune United vs. Kirkeeans 'B'

Sukhoi FC vs. Krida Prabodhini

Predators vs.Black Cats

Extreme Warriors vs. Shivajians

Nav Maharashtra FC vs. Eagle's FC.

Berdych downs Verdasco to move into Miami semis

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 04:35 AM

Czech Tomas Berdych fought back to claim a 4-6 7-6 6-4 victory over Spain's Fernando Verdasco on Thursday to earn a place in the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open.

Berdych, the number 16 who eliminated top seed Roger Federer in the previous round, struggled in the opening set but came out on top in the tiebreak and then produced an aggressive display in the deciding set.

The Czech broke with a superb backhand crosscourt pass in the seventh game of the final set and from that point there was little doubt about the outcome, with 10th seed Verdasco blasting the ball but lacking control.

Berdych next faces the winner of Thursday's quarter-final between Russian Mikhail Youzhny and Sweden's Robin Soderling.

American Andy Roddick and Spain's Rafael Nadal also meet in the last four.

Cardozo goals help Benfica sink 10-man Liverpool

Benfica's Oscar Cardozo celebrates his goal against Liverpool during their Europa League quarter-final, first leg...

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 03:55 AM

Benfica forward Oscar Cardozo converted two second-half penalties as they came from behind to beat 10-man Liverpool 2-1 in their Europa League quarter-final first leg clash on Thursday.

Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy helped Hamburg SV clinch a 2-1 win at home to Standard Liege while David Villa scored a late equaliser to salvage a 2-2 draw for Valencia at home to Atletico Madrid in an all-Spanish last eight clash.

Fulham's dream run continued with a 2-1 home win over German champions VfL Wolfsburg, although an 89th minute reply by Alexander Madlung took the gloss off the result for the Premier League outfit playing in their first European quarter-final.

The Europa League is Liverpool's only chance of salvaging the season and Rafa Benitez's side got off to a flying start when Daniel Agger's skilful flick gave them a ninth-minute lead.

However, their evening began to unravel after half an hour when forward Ryan Babel was sent off for a shove in the face on Benfica defender Luisao who had just been booked for going straight through the back of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

Benfica pressed for an equaliser and drew level on the hour when Paraguay forward Cardozo buried a harshly-awarded penalty after Emiliano Insua tangled with Pablo Aimar.

Cardozo struck again from the spot after 79 minutes, again finding the bottom right corner of Pepe Reina's goal after Jamie Carragher had blocked Angel di Maria's cross with his arm.

Venus reaches Miami final by beating Bartoli

Venus Williams of the U.S. returns a shot to France's Marion Bartoli during their match...

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 02:55 AM

Third seed Venus Williams reached the final of the Sony Ericsson Open after a comfortable 6-3 6-4 win over France's Marion Bartoli on Thursday.

Wearing a red 'corset-style' outfit in the bright sunshine, the seven-times grand slam winner was not at her sharpest but still proved too good for out-of-sorts 13th seed Bartoli.

The American broke serve straight away in a first set containing plenty of errors from both players.

After her opponent broke back, Williams responded with a second break thanks to three double-faults.

Bartoli then looked poised for a second-set comeback after breaking to go 3-1 up but Williams broke back immediately with a spectacular cross-court forehand volley and then broke again to clinch victory.

"If I had been able to play the same way in the first set maybe it would have been different. The second set was really tight," Bartoli told reporters.

"In the first set I didn't play that well so I think also for her to be one set up helped her confidence."

Serena Williams, missing the tournament due to injury, watched from the stands as her sister set up a meeting with the winner of the all-Belgian semi-final between Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin being played later on Thursday.

Venus has won the event three times but her last appearance in the final came nine years ago when she beat Jennifer Capriati.

"I'm really happy to be back in this final and obviously I want to take it a step further," she said.

Big-scoring Mumbai Indians a hit among frenzied fans too

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 02:31 AM

Mumbai Indians, the Reliance Industries-backed Indian Premier League cricket team, is on a roll. The franchise, on top of the IPL-3 charts, has not just emerged as the team with the strongest local support in its home city amongst all eight teams, but it is also become the favourite IPL team, nationally.

But there is a twist in the tale here, one that may humble the IPL minders who seem to be already on the 'we have done it' trip.

It is the presence of master-blaster Sachin Tendulkar, rather than any city-based loyalty that gives MI its strong traction with cricket-crazy Mumbaikars. Speak of the trials and tribulations of building a sustainable sports business around a city-specific loyal fan base.

Synovate conducted the FE-commissioned the eight-city survey amongst 406 males (18-45 years) from SEC A and B households across IPL cities--Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Chandigarh/Mohali -- between March 26 and 30.

According to the survey, respondents from Mumbai and Bangalore emerged as most loyal to their home IPL teams, with 88% Mumbaikars polled pledging their loyalties to Mumbai Indians while 82% of Bangalore males rooted for RCB. The IPL-1 winner, Rajasthan Royals can take heart from the fact that around three-fourths of the pink city residents stand by them, their current performance and change of home ground to Ahmedabad notwithstanding. Chennai (63%) and Kolkata (62%) also manage to sway a majority of its citizens to don their home colours.

Down South, though, Hyderabadis are less forgiving, with support for home team Deccan Chargers lowest at 49%, perhaps reflecting the jumbled state politics involving the demand for a Telangana state, as also the snub for shifting the venue to Cuttack . So too are people from Chandigarh , with just about half of them supporting the Kumar Sangakara-led team. Support for Mumbai Indians cuts across all IPL cities, with almost a third of all males nationally cheering for it.

Almost a third of respondents in Kolkata and Chennai, and around fifth in Hyderabad , Delhi and Chandigarh root for the Ambani team, second only to their city teams.

But when it comes to watching the IPL matches live in the stadium, Kolkata emerges as the leading city. In this Eastern metropolis, almost a third of those polled say they did watch an IPL-3 match at Eden Gardens , compared to just a fifth in Mumbai and Chandigarh . Overall, the survey shows that IPL has gained popularity because of star players and star team owners. "At least 50% of those who support non-home teams are blinded by star power," according to Synovate. This preoccupation with the celebrity player and owner is also borne by the fact that under 40% of respondents supporting a non-home city team do it because of it being a 'better team'.

When asked to comment on the quality of cricket being played in the IPL, a majority gave their thumbs-up. When asked "how often do you watch IPL matches on TV?" Hyderabad and Delhi emerged as the top two IPL cities with an average of 76% respondents tuning in to watch IPL matches on television everyday. However, 32% of those polled in Kolkata tend to watch IPL match only once in a week, the survey findings showed.

Hopkins eyes revenge against desperate Jones

Light heavyweight boxers Bernard Hopkins (L) and Roy Jones Jr., both of the U.S., pose...

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 01:55 AM

Bernard Hopkins has labelled Roy Jones Jr a "dangerous and desperate" man as they prepare to renew their rivalry in Las Vegas on Saturday some 17 years and thousands of jabs after the brawlers first faced each other.

When the pair first clashed, Bill Clinton was president, George W. Bush was co-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team, and Barack Obama was a lawyer in Chicago.

It was way back in May 1993 when they contested the vacant IBF middleweight title at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

Jones won a unanimous decision in what was the first world title bout for both fighters and then went on to win belts at super-middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight.

Those glory days have passed, and 41-year-old Jones has lost five of his last 10 fights, three by knockout, including being stopped in the first round by unheralded Australian Danny Green in his most recent contest in December.

"Roy Jones is a desperate man. A desperate man is a dangerous man," 45-year-old Hopkins told reporters.

Hopkins (50-5-1, 32 KOs) captured the middleweight belt in 1995 by stopping Ecuador's Segundo Mercado, and made a record 20 successful defences of that crown before losing two close decisions to fellow American Jermain Taylor in 2005.

He said his rationale for the rematch is simply to reverse what he considers the only clear defeat of his career.

"It's personal. It's definitely personal. I helped start his legacy and I'm going to end it."

LOST TIME

Each of the fighters are blaming the other for the amount of time between the two contests.

"He didn't want to fight me again because after 1993 I got better and he didn't," Hopkins said.

Jones, in a telephone interview with Reuters, countered: "He didn't want to fight me again until he felt like I was at the end of my career, and I had deteriorated and slowed down a bit.

"He wasn't going to fight me until he thought I was done. Now he feels like I'm done, so he'll fight me now."

Hopkins' last two fights have brought points wins against Enrique Ornelas and Kelly Pavlik but Jones was confident the veteran's desire for revenge would remain unfulfilled.

"He don't like me, and I'm glad he don't like me," said Jones (54-6, 40 KOs).

"He hates he couldn't beat Roy Jones in his prime, in his heyday, and he hates Roy Jones for that, he hates that I overshadowed him in his prime, and he has not liked me from that day forward. But that's too bad.

"After Saturday, he's gonna hate me twice as much as he does now."

Ganguly goes ballistic as KKR vanquish Chargers

Published>Fri, Apr 02 10 12:31 AM

Kolkata, April 2 (IANS) Ageing warhorse Sourav Ganguly played a blistering 54-ball 88 as Kolkata Knight Riders moved up to the fifth slot with a 24-run victory over Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League here Thursday.

The Hyderabad-based Chargers, needing to score at a challenging asking rate of 9.1 per over to overhaul the Knight Riders' total of 181/6, could manage only 157/5 as they saw their runs drying up towards the end before 45,000 delirious fans at the Eden Gardens.

Cruising comfortably at 77/1 in the ninth over, with Harschelle Gibbs (50) and Manish Mishra (29 of 16 balls) calling the shots, the tourists saw their plans go haywire as both fell to soft dismissals. Mishra threw away his wicket by spooning a catch to Manoj Tiwary at long on.

Gibbs, looking solid, tried to dispatch Shane Bond over long off, and finished in the hands of David Hussey close to the fence in the 15th over. The Chargers, then 121/3, could manage only 34 runs in the remaining 5.4 overs. This was in sharp contrast to the KKR innings, where 65 runs came off the last five.

A lot depended on Andrew Symonds (45 not out of 37 balls), but he found it hard to push up the run rate on the slowing track.

Earlier, playing one of his best innings in Twenty20 cricket, skipper Ganguly led from the front, clearing the field almost at his sweet will. Nine boundaries and five audacious sixes were indicators of the way India's most successful captain dominated the bowlers on the sluggish strip.

Ganguly sparkled from the start, hitting the very first delivery for a boundary, and followed up with a cut to the point fence two balls later.

The KKR however lost wickets at the other end. Chris Gayle (4) tried a needless lofted shot, Cheteshwar Pujara (17) managed a leading edge to mid off and Tiwary dragged the ball onto his stumps as the hosts struggled at 68/3 in the ninth over.

Hussey (31 off 27 deliveries) then joined Ganguly and the duo added 78 runs in 8.3 overs to put their side in command.

Ganguly was particularly severe on Pragyan Ojha in the 17th over as he plundered 21 runs including three sixes before perishing while attempting the fourth of the last ball.

Though Angelo Mathews and Hussey departed, the KKR succeeded in retaining the momentum till the end.

Jaskaran Singh, Andrew Symonds and Pragyan Ojha picked up two wickets each for the Deccan Chargers.

Darpan Inani takes early lead

Published Fri, Apr 02 10 12:29 AM

Mumbai, Apr 1 (PTI) Gujarat''s Darpan Inani jumped into the sole lead with two points after registering two consecutive wins in the GTLF 11th National-A Chess Championship for the Blind here today. Three other players - Darshan Patel, Ashwin Makwana (both Gujarat) and S T Sai Krishna (Tamil Nadu) were following the leader with 1.5 points. In an early bishop opening, Darpan with white pieces gave no chance to his opponent Shirish V Patil of Maharashtra. Though the queens were off the board at their 17th move itself, Shirish gave up his centralised ''D'' pawn without any compensation and started trailing behind Darpan thereafter. An awful break on the Kingside at the 19th move of Shirish paved way for Darpan to reach a winning rook and pawn ending in 48 moves. The 15-player round robin tournament, held at the Andheri Sports Complex, is being played under the aegis of the All India Chess Federation for the Blind and is supported by the All India Chess Federation.

Rooney's enforced rest could help Capello

Wayne Rooney of Manchester United receives medical attention on the pitch after he was injured...

Published>Thu, Apr 01 10 11:35 PM

If England coach Fabio Capello had his way Wayne Rooney would do nothing more strenuous than a few daily laps of Manchester United's Carrington training complex between now and the end of the Premier League season.

The striker cannot even manage that at the moment after rolling his ankle against Bayern Munich on Tuesday, an everyday football injury that triggered mass hysteria and gloom over England's prospects at the World Cup in June.

Once news emerged that it was just "minor ligament damage" and the burly 24-year-old would, after all, recover in time to board the plane for South Africa, a collective sigh of relief was heaved across the country.

While United must soldier on without the man who has carried them all season, beginning on Saturday at home to title rivals Chelsea, Capello will be pleased that Rooney can put his feet up after already plundering 34 goals this season.

The pragmatic Capello would probably take any other injury ahead of one to Rooney -- the one irreplaceable player in England's squad and the man who strikes fear into world class defenders.

British bookmakers Ladbrokes say that only 50 pounds ($75.99) has been wagered on England for the World Cup since Rooney was hurt in Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg.

"Punters clearly do not fancy a Rooney-less England," Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg said in a news release.

"If the main man is given the all-clear for South Africa we expect the patriotic punt to kick into overdrive."

Four years ago Rooney suffered a more serious injury, a fractured metatarsal, in April and spent the next two months in a desperate race to recover for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

SENT OFF

He returned for England's second group game but was clearly off the pace and ended the tournament with no goals -- his frustration boiling over when he was sent off against Portugal as his team tumbled out.

If England are to make an impact in South Africa it is imperative Rooney is fit, rested and firing on all cylinders.

Capello would have watched Rooney's recent inspired and full-bloodied performances with mixed feelings -- perhaps even covering his eyes at times.

The striker has been in the best form of his life but his playing style means he is never far from the flying boots and bone-jarring challenges that are the meat and potatoes of the Premier League.

Rooney is likely to be out for three to four weeks but if there is a chance of an earlier return, there is no question he will be chomping at the bit.

Capello, who has already lost David Beckham to an Achilles injury, is sweating on the fitness of Chelsea left back Ashley Cole and Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon, who have both been out with long-term injuries.

However, if they return in the next few weeks and Rooney has four weeks off before playing a couple of end-of-season games for United, England could benefit from having three key players rested and ready for the big kickoff in South Africa.

MLS clears way for more big-name signings

Published Thu, Apr 01 10 11:15 PM

Major League Soccer has cleared the way for more big-name signings by allowing teams to include up to three designated players in their squads as part of new rules announced on Thursday.

The designated player rule, also know as the David Beckham rule, was put in place in 2007 to allow each club to pay one player any amount above a fixed salary budget charge. The club's salary budgets are an expense shared by all MLS owners.

Teams will now be allowed two designated player spots and can purchase a third slot for $250,000.

Each designated player will count $335,000 toward the team's salary cap or about 13 percent of a club's salary budget.

"Expanding the designated player rule is another example of MLS's commitment to providing top-level soccer for our fans," Todd Durbin, MLS vice-president of player relations and competition, said in a statement.

"After three seasons, we have seen that the designated player rule improves the quality of play, creates intrigue and discussion, and enhances our clubs' distinct on-field identities.

"We will continue to see varied approaches from our clubs in assembling their rosters, and these changes will give them increased flexibility."

It was the designated player rule that enabled the Los Angeles Galaxy to lure former England captain David Beckham to the United States with in a multi-million dollar deal.

PSG fans barred from attending French Cup semi-final

Published Thu, Apr 01 10 11:05 PM

Fans of Paris St Germain will be banned from attending their side's French Cup semi-final away to amateurs Quevilly later this month for safety reasons, the French Football Federation (FFF) said on Thursday.

"The Paris St Germain club having decided to stop selling tickets (for away matches) until further notice, the PSG supporters will be barred from attending the PSG-Quevilly match," the FFF said in a statement.

PSG decided to stop selling tickets for away matches for the rest of the season following the death of a fan last month after he was beaten up by a rival group from his own club.

The FFF said measures would be taken to ensure PSG fans could not access tickets for the Cup match to be played in Caen on April 14.

Quevilly, who play in the equivalent of the fourth division and knocked out Ligue 1 sides Stade Rennes and Boulogne-sur-Mer on their way to the last four, had hoped to play in Rouen, near the small Normandy town.

The FFF and security officials decided, however, that the match would be played at Caen, 120 kms away, because the Rouen stadium did not meet the safety requirements for a French Cup semi-final.

Security will be tightened with over 800 police on duty, among them a recently-created unit specialised in fighting hooliganism, the French Interior ministry said in a statement.

Monaco host Ligue 1 rivals Racing Lens in the other semi-final on April 13.

New Delhi, Apr 1(ANI): Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag has retained the top spot of the International Cricket Council (ICC) player rankings for Test batsmen in the latest rankings released on Thursday.

Sehwag has remained at the top with 863 points, followed by South African batsman Hashim Amla for second spotwith 842 points and Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardena at third spot with 836 points.

Australian vice-captain Michael Clarke, who earlier had Sehwag firmly within his sights before the start of the second and final Test against New Zealand in Hamilton, as just 16 ratings points separated the two batsmen, has dropped to fifth position after his contributions of 28 and 63.

Clarke's fall has shifted back Amla to the second place with an opportunity to snatch the number-one position from Sehwag when he faces West Indies in the three-Test series, which starts in Kingston on June 10.

In the rankings for Test bowlers, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has bounced back strongly after a disappointing first Test in Wellington to jump three places and regain second position, which he had first achieved last year in March in Durban against South Africa.he left-arm fast bowler, who took 10 wickets in Hamilton, had slipped two places to fifth position after managing just one wicket in the first Test.

Johnson's team-mate Doug Bollinger is also on the move upwards and has achieved a career-best 15th position after climbing four places following his figures of 3-57 and 2-87. (ANI)

Asian Rugby 7s C''wealth test event from tomorrow

Published Thu, Apr 01 10 10:15 PM

New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI) Top eight Asian rugby sevens teams including Malaysia will battle it out for supremacy in the Commonwealth Test event beginning here from tomorrow. The two-day high adrenalin championship will be played at the Delhi University North Campus grounds. The event is also a part of the Asian Rugby Football Union Sevens Series. Apart from India (host nation) and Pakistan, the other countries participating in the event are Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Brunei, Iran and Uzbekistan. The Pakistan team, who had on Tuesday, received the confirmation from its government to participate in the event, is likely to arrive here late in the night. "The Pakistan team will be arriving here today. I am in constant touch with Pakistan Rugby Union president. It''s a very positive development for both Pakistan rugby players as well as we organisers that they are coming to participate. We all are very happy," said Rugby India vice-president Aga Hussain. The Pakistani federation was waiting for their government clearance as the Indian government had well in advance given the team members visas to arrive and play here in the event. The first match of the tournament will be played between India and Uzbekistan. Originally, Pakistan was to clash with India in the opener, but keeping in mind their late arrival to the tournament, organisers decided to change the schedule. The tournament will see 24 matches being played in two days. The duration of a single match is of 14 minutes and is played in two halves of 7 minutes each. Rugby Sevens, also known as seven-a-side, is the shorter variant of the Rugby Union, which consists of seven players a side instead of the usual 15.

Arsenal lose captain Fabregas for rest of season

Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas warms up during a team training session in north London in this...

Published Thu, Apr 01 10 09:55 PM

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge was dealt a huge blow on Thursday when captain Cesc Fabregas was ruled out for at least six weeks with a cracked bone in his leg.

"Cesc will miss the remainder of the domestic campaign as he will be out of action for at least six weeks," a statement on the club website (www.arsenal.com) said.

The Spain midfielder suffered a crack in his right fibula after a collision with Barcelona defender Carles Puyol in Wednesday's 2-2 Champions League quarter-final first leg draw.

Fabregas has been in sparkling form for third-placed Arsenal this season, scoring 19 goals in all competitions.

The 22-year-old should recover in time to play at least some part in Spain's World Cup campaign in South Africa this year.

We were made scapegoat for WC failure: Prabhjot, Deepak

Published Thu, Apr 01 10 09:45 PM

New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI) Dropped from India''s scheme of things for Azlan Shah Cup, senior forwards Prabhjot Singh and Deepak Thakur today claimed they have been made scapegoats for the team''s poor show in the recent World Cup. "Hockey is all about team work and if the whole team has fared badly in the World Cup, then why the selectors have made us the scapegoat? They should have changed the whole team," a fuming Prabhjot told PTI-Bhasha. "I came to know about the news from media only. We were asked by coach Jose Brasa to be prepared for the coaching camp and then we got this treatment. I will wait for Brasa to return from vacation and explain things to us," Prabhjot added. Ajitpal Singh, a government observer who attended the selection meeting today, said the list has been prepared keeping in mind the recent performance of the players. "There is no place for players who don''t believe in team spirit," he said. "We have prepared the list keeping in mind every aspect. Deepak hasn''t played in the last phase of the World Cup. He was totally out of touch and in bad form. Prabhjot also failed to perform as per the level expected from him," Ajitpal said. Thakur, however, alleged that his and Prabhjot''s axing was because of their participation in then players'' strike before the World Cup. "I knew it all along. This is something related to our strike before the World Cup as we were among the most vocal ones," he said. "The coach told us to stay prepared for the camp. Podium not far away: Sutil

Published Thu, Apr 01 10 09:15 PM

Saumojyoti Singha Choudhury Sepang (Malaysia), Apr 1 (PTI) Adrian Sutil is yet to score his first points this year but the Force India driver is impressed with the potential of the car and has no doubts that regular points and occasional podium finish would be the order of the season for the Silverstone-based outfit. "After witnessing the pace of the car and the improvements we have made in the first two races, definitely regular points and podium finishes now and then seems a realistic target for us," Sutil told PTI in an interview. "We need to improve our car a little bit more and I''m sure podium finish is not far away. We also need a little bit of luck," he said. "To start the season with a good car has made a lot of difference. It is now much easy to qualify for Q3. The team is very motivated unlike last year," he added. Sutil was little unlucky not to be among the points, especially after qualifying 10th on the grid in both Bahrain and Australia. The German finished a disappointing 12th place in Sakhir while retired just after nine laps in Albert Park last weekend with an engine problem. His teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi has failed to make the top 10 in qualifying in both the races, but the Italian has managed to secure eight points by finishing ninth in Bahrain and seventh in Melbourne. A desperate Sutil said he cannot wait to break his points jinx in Sunday''s Malaysian Grand Prix. "Definitely I am eyeing Q3 again. It is possible. Hopefully, I will score some points. I''ve had two races where I should have scored," he said. He also said that he his under no pressure to perform, especially with Liuzzi stealing the limelight in Bahrain and Melbourne. "I don''t take pressure. In Melbourne an electrical failure ruined my day. It''s a shame but that happens in Formula 1. "But after the first two races, it has become must for us to keep the momentum going. We want to continue with the same performance in the future races," Sutil said. .

Defending champion Casey pulls out of Houston Open

Paul Casey of England hits his third shot from the sand on the 13th hole...

Published Thu, Apr 01 10 08:55 PM

Briton Paul Casey has withdrawn from his defence of the Houston Open title this week and could be in doubt for the U.S. Masters.

The world number six advised tournament officials on Thursday of an injury to his left shoulder and pain on the left side of his neck.

Casey had been due to tee off in the first round at 0800 local time with American Phil Mickelson and Australia's Adam Scott.

But rather than risk further injury by playing the $5.8m event the 32-year-old Englishman withdrew as a precaution before next week's U.S. Masters at Augusta.

"This injury is completely separate from the injury I had last year so I am not overly worried but my left shoulder is not comfortable while my first rib on the left side is not moving correctly, and the muscles around it have locked up so I am not able to get the club in a position where I can swing it properly and hit the golf ball," Casey told reporters.

"It feels like there's something pinched in my left shoulder as I am having difficulty moving my head and rotating my neck, and I feel very, very tight in the neck and shoulders," he added.

"I tried to play on Wednesday and I am bitterly disappointed not to be going out and playing today but I have got to worry about the rest of the season.

"And after last year's experience of trying to play through an injury for about one or two weeks, it ended up costing me six months away from the game," Casey said.

"So the last thing I can try and afford is try and push it and cost myself anymore time. Hopefully, it is only a one week thing."

PTF chief denies saying Sania should play for Pakistan

Published Thu, Apr 01 10 08:05 PM

Karachi, Apr 1 (PTI) Hours after the local media quoted him as saying that Sania Mirza should represent Pakistan after her marriage to Shoaib Malik, Pakistan Tennis Federation Dilawar Abbas today denied making such comments, claiming he had been misunderstood. "How can she play for Pakistan when she is an Indian national and wants to remain an Indian national?" Abbas told PTI. "I said that she should play in Pakistan not for Pakistan. Obviously you need to be a Pakistani national to represent this country in any sport," he said. Abbas'' remarks was in contrast to what appeared in ''The News'' which quoted the PTF chief as saying that Sania should don Pakistan colour after her marriage. "It is great news for our tennis community that Sania Mirza is getting married to Shoaib Malik. We welcome her and hope that she would become a Pakistani national and play for us in future. She has a great future ahead and we would be delighted if she plays for Pakistan," Abbas was quoted as saying. "Asian women traditionally follow their husbands which is why I''m hopeful that someday she would be inspired by Shoaib to play for Pakistan," he added. Abbas, however, claimed he had been misunderstood. "I was misunderstood. I meant that after marriage she should play in Pakistan. She can take part in our national events and we will allow that as it is allowed under our PTF constitution," Abbas said. He said there was no doubt that Sania was a tennis icon for many female sports lovers and if she came to Pakistan she should play exhibition matches or hold coaching clinics. "If she comes to Pakistan and does this I am sure she will attract a lot of her fans to take up tennis and also help us improve our overall tennis standards," he said. Abbas said he wished the couple a happy married life and hoped Sania would visit Pakistan regularly and get involved in the sport in any capacity. Pakistan''s top tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq also ruled out Sania''s chance of playing for Pakistan. "How can she do that? She has been representing India all these years, she is a big star there and she has a lot of Indian fans. She has so many of her sponsors in India so I don''t think it is possible for her to come and play for Pakistan," Aisam said. He, however, felt that if Sania visits Pakistan and takes part in tennis activities, it would be a big boost for the sport in the country. "Tennis in Pakistan needs big names to come to Pakistan," he added.

IPL cheerleaders draw wrath of Congress MLAs

Published Thu, Apr 01 10 06:59 PM

New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI) The Delhi Assembly was today rocked by vociferous protests from ruling Congress MLAs over alleged obscene dance by cheerleaders and consumption of liquor in stadium during IPL cricket matches, with a few lawmakers even demanding a ban on the event in the city. Finance Minister AK Walia assured the House that he will seek a detailed report on the matter and appropriate action will be taken. The issue was raised by Congress MLA Matin Ahmed who alleged that scantly-clad cheerleaders were engaged in obscene dance before the people during the Indian Premier League matches at Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium. "Some telecom firms have even started betting through SMS services, promising winners that they will be able to meet the cheerleaders," he alleged. "People are openly having liquor in the stadium with betting and gambling taking place without any check," he alleged. Kunwar Karan Singh of Congress claimed that ticket price for certain categories has been lowered to evade tax. "This cannot be allowed," he said. Demanding a ban on the matches at the venue, Congress legislator Ramakant Goswami said "in the name of sports, people are consuming liquor openly in the stadium. Police too is supporting such gambling and betting". Talvinder Singh Marwa and Singh also sought strict action against violators and alleged that "some organisers were even seen going to the ground with glass of liquor in their hand." Seeking immediate intervention of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Congress legislator Mukesh Sharma said that such activities have destroyed the image of the capital and the matches must be banned immediately. Shoaib Iqbal, another Congress MLA, too protested against the games saying that "it is against our culture. The matches should be banned. "What happens in a night club is now being seen in the staudium," he said. Taking note of their demand, the Finance Minister said that he would personally go to the stadium on April 4 during the IPL match to see whatever action is required. "I am taking the issue very seriously. I have ordered the officials to file a detailed the report soon in the matter," Walia added. BJP MLAs were not present in the House as they have been expelled for three days since yesterday for their unruly behavior in the Assembly.
