Czech Tomas Berdych fought back to claim a 4-6 7-6 6-4 victory over Spain's Fernando Verdasco on Thursday to earn a place in the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open.

Berdych, the number 16 who eliminated top seed Roger Federer in the previous round, struggled in the opening set but came out on top in the tiebreak and then produced an aggressive display in the deciding set.

The Czech broke with a superb backhand crosscourt pass in the seventh game of the final set and from that point there was little doubt about the outcome, with 10th seed Verdasco blasting the ball but lacking control.

Berdych next faces the winner of Thursday's quarter-final between Russian Mikhail Youzhny and Sweden's Robin Soderling.

American Andy Roddick and Spain's Rafael Nadal also meet in the last four.
