PCB not aware about Aamir''s turning into an ICC informant

Wed, Sep 15 10 11:26 AM

Karachi, Sep 15 (PTI) The Pakistan Cricket Board is not aware whether Mohammad Aamir is contemplating becoming an ICC informant in the ongoing investigations into the startling spot-fixing scandal. A media report had claimed that Aamir may turn an informant of the game''s world governing body, which had suspended the teen paceman along with Mohammed Asif and Test captain Salman Butt. The trio have challenged the suspension and asked for a preliminary hearing into the allegations. "I don''t think this will happen and generally speaking in legal terms even if you turn state witness it does not mean a clean sheet for that person," PCB legal advisor Tafazzul Rizvi said. Rizvi said it was difficult to say when the Scotland Yard would complete its investigations and whether it would yield results. But he admitted that the players, if not cleared, could be staring at bans ranging from six months to life and could also be let off with heavy fines. "It all depends on what the inquiry throws up." Rizvi said PCB had adopted a wait and see policy over the ongoing investigations. "It could be completed in a few weeks time or it could take months but we don''t know when it will end," he said when asked if the Board had the 2011 World Cup in mind while looking at the issue. Scotland Yard on Tuesday quizzed a fourth Pakistani player, pace bowler Wahab Riaz in London in connection with the ongoing investigations. Rizvi was also not sure whether Scotland Yard could question more Pakistani players. "So far they have not informed us about wanting to talk to any other player and they also spoke to Wahab after informing us," he said. Rizvi said that the three players had responded to the ICC notices sent to them in their individual capacity. "PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt has written to the ICC chief executive over the provisional suspension imposed on our players but we were told by the ICC that the players have a case to answer and they must respond to the notices themselves," he added. He insisted that it was a wrong impression that the PCB was not playing a pro-active role in resolving the controversy which was bringing a bad name to Pakistan cricket. "They are some things which we can''t speak on or discuss at this time but rest assured we are following up on every development every hour of the day. For the time being we are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigations but we will wait and see. We have options available to us," he said. PTI Corr AT

FEATURE - Leeson blames banks for game's debts

Published>Wed, Sep 15 10 10:42 AM

Former rogue trader Nick Leeson is well aware of the irony when, in his role as CEO of Irish soccer club Galway United, he blames the banks for the level of debt in both the game and society.

"It's the fault of the banks -- they shouldn't have allowed people to over-extend themselves as much as they did," said the Englishman who went to prison for bringing down Barings Bank.

"They actually promoted it as far as I'm concerned, and they are the engineers of their own demise."

Like all businesses in recession-hit Ireland, soccer is suffering. "It's extremely difficult. The amount of discretionary spend out there is very limited," Leeson told Reuters in an interview at the west-coast League of Ireland club.

"As bad as everything is in the country, the soccer clubs are struggling more," said Leeson, looking healthier and heavier than when he was released from jail in 1999 suffering from colon cancer.

"There's a similarity with the football clubs at the moment -- you've just got too laden with debt, you reach an extreme limit and you just can't operate any more.

"You can't get any more credit, the interest on the money you owe keeps increasing at a rate you can't keep pace with."

BANK COLLAPSE

Leeson was a Singapore-based junior derivatives trader when he ran up a $1.4-billion loss that led to the 1995 collapse of British merchant bank Barings.

He spent three-and-a-half years in a Singapore jail, emerging to write a book entitled "Rogue Trader" which was later made into a film with Ewan McGregor as Leeson.

Now 43, he joined Galway five years ago and lives on the outskirts of the city with his second wife and their children, combining working for the small club with speaking engagements.

Asked about plans for his future at the club, Leeson said: "I don't know, but I see myself staying in Galway; it's a lovely place to live and the family are happy here."

Despite the unsteady financial climate, and soccer's battle in Ireland to prize spectators from rugby and the national sports of Gaelic football and hurling, Leeson said the country's soccer clubs offered a good investment opportunity.

Of the 10 teams in Ireland's top division, four will qualify for European football next season.

"The multiple millions you could invest in a Championship (second division) club in England...you could invest a small fraction of that in Ireland and qualify for Europe.

PLAYER GLUT

"It depends what people's motivations are, and if it's to own a club in England then so be it. But if it's to qualify for the group stages of a European competition there are other ways of investing your money. You get more bang for your buck here."

Historically, Irish soccer clubs have helped to make ends meet by selling players to teams in England but that revenue has also begun to feel the squeeze.

"We've got two or three players that are attracting a lot of interest from the U.K., Germany, Cyprus and Greece, but it became very apparent to me during the summer that there's a glut of professional footballers out there," Leeson said.

"If we can sell on a player or two it's a massive boost for us, but in the current environment it's just more and more difficult."

Leeson smiled as he described how he had taken on local players and unemployed professionals, convincing them to join his struggling side by selling them the dream of a big move to England.

"We always tell them that if you think Galway United is going to be your last club, then it's the wrong club for you. We want people who are going places."

Nadal charms New York crowds before heading home

Wed, Sep 15 10 10:26 AM

Rafa Nadal was still beaming about winning the U.S. Open when he spent his final day in New York on Tuesday, posing for photographs and appearing on the morning talkshow circuit, before heading back to Spain.

The world number one was taken on a whirlwind tour of Manhattan on Tuesday, showing off his new trophy to screaming fans in Times Square and on Fifth Avenue and being whisked around the television studios, before preparing to fly back home.

The 24-year-old was all smiles as he waved to the crowds then spoke with media after celebrating his 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-2 win over Novak Djokovic in Monday night's rain-delayed final at Flushing Meadows.

"Yeah, it's unbelievable for me. It's more than I ever dreamed about, that I ever thought I can do," he told Reuters.

"It's just an amazing feeling and I'm very happy to have my first U.S. Open in my hands now."

Nadal was dressed casually in denim jeans and a navy blue polo shirt and was looking remarkably fresh after managing just a few hours sleep from the night before because of all his media commitments after the final.

He said he had celebrated his victory by having a quiet meal with his family, including his coach and uncle Toni who had convinced him to focus on tennis.

"It was one of my frustrations when I was a kid," Nadal said. "I love the football, it was my passion. I would have loved to play football, but it's impossible to do everything.

"In football, I wasn't really good, I was a really normal player."

Nadal had already won Wimbledon, the Australian Open and French Open championships and by adding the one major title that had eluded him, he became just the seventh man to complete a career grand slam.

His achievement, at just 24, immediately reignited the debate about who is the greatest player of all but Nadal, wincing every time the subject is mentioned, remained reluctant to talk about it.

He has always maintained that Roger Federer, with a record 16 grand slam titles, is alone at the top of the mountain. Nadal has nine grand slam titles.

Federer won the U.S. Open five times in a row from 2004-2008 and Nadal, who was once considered a clay-court specialist, said he was happy just to win once on the hardcourts at Flushing Meadows.

"I always saw this tournament as very far for me," he said.

"This tournament wasn't the best ... and that's very emotional for me."

ICC mulls four-year league to boost interest in tests

Wed, Sep 15 10 08:46 AM

The International Cricket Council will mull the introduction of a new four-year league and a playoff series to decide the world's test champion as part of a raft of measures to boost interest in the sport.

The league would determine the top four teams to contest a playoff, and the first playoff tournament had been requested for 2013, the ICC said in a statement on Wednesday.

Test cricket, which has struggled to maintain its profile since the advent of Twenty20 cricket, currently has a rankings system but no tournament to determine the top test nation.

An ICC working group had also proposed a similar four-year league for one-day matches, the first from April 2011 to April 2014. It would run separate to the World Cup, the ICC said.

The proposals signalled the ICC's intention to keep all three formats amid calls for one-day internationals to be reduced or scrapped altogether.

"Restructuring international cricket is a significant strategic challenge and one that must be dealt with," ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said.

"Protecting and promoting all three formats at international level is viable and I believe the (working group) has shown itself to be forward thinking in tackling the challenges."

Other proposals included reducing the number of teams competing at the World Cup to 10. The 2011 edition to be held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will see 14 teams compete.

The ICC will also examine expanding the World Twenty20 to a 16-team competition and introducing a rankings system.

INTERVIEW - Cavendish gunning for first major points win

Published>Wed, Sep 15 10 07:08 AM

After missing out on the points classification title in this year's Tour de France despite winning five stages, Britain's Mark Cavendish is optimistic about landing the Tour of Spain equivalent.

With five days remaining the HTC-Columbia sprinter holds an 18-point advantage in the category over Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez, the overall race leader.

"The points classification wasn't an objective at all when I came here and it came as a surprise when I first got it without winning a stage," the 25-year-old Cavendish told Reuters on Tuesday's rest day in Valladolid.

"But the green jersey's definitely a goal for me now. There are two definite sprint stages left, at Salamanca and Madrid, and another one that maybe I could do something in at Toledo."

"I think in any case Rodriguez is more interested in the overall race so I'm feeling pretty confident," added Cavendish.

The Briton has notched 22 stage wins on the Tours of France, Spain and Italy, including two in this year's Vuelta, and is keen to secure his first victory in the points competition of a top-three stage race.

"I've never won that points jersey before and it would be good to do it," said Cavendish.

TEAM OBJECTIVES

"But that's not our only objective for the team, we've got a rider [Peter Velits of Slovakia] in the top 10 overall, we won the team time trial and we've had guys in breaks.

"There's only two guys in our team left here who are over 25 so it's a young squad but we're doing really well."

Cavendish said he would like to gift a stage to key wingman Matt Goss of Australia before the end of the race to thank him for his work.

"I tried to let Matt take a stage before I made the green an objective and it didn't quite work out. But if I've got the points jersey secured then I'd really like to do that," added the Isle of Man rider.

Rodriguez said he was closing in on the biggest victory of his career.

"I'm in the best position possible, even if the time differences are small," the Katusha rider told reporters, referring to his 33-second lead over Italian Vincenzo Nibali.

"If I can hold on to the jersey in tomorrow's time trial, then great, but it's Saturday's last stage in the mountains where I'll be on the attack. That stage could change my life."

Just 18 days left, but OC yet to hit bulls-eye at Dr Karni shooting range

Published>Wed, Sep 15 10 06:22 AM

With barely half a month left for the Commonwealth Games, the city has been beautified for the benefit of athletes and tourists who will be visiting the Capital during the period. However, at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in Tughluqabad, labourers continue to work at a frantic pace ? hoping to finish it on time.

Work on most of the shooting ranges inside the stadium has been finished, but the final range is far from complete.

When Newsline visited the stadium, workers could be seen near the entrance ? surrounded by scattered bricks and piles of cement.

Though the broadcasting compound is a temporary structure, it still seemed to require a lot of work. The noise emanating from the machinery on the site was so unbearably loud that OC officials had to request the labourers to stop working for a while, so they could address the media.

Everything looked prim and proper inside the stadium, but Newsline found that work was still being taken up on the field of play (FOP) toilets in the final range. The targets were yet to be fixed, but not a worker was in sight there.

On the brighter side, the seating arrangements had already been made and targets at other ranges, such as the 10 m, 25 m and 100 m ones, had already been fixed. The flooring hadn't been laid at the final range, and could be seen folded inside. Acknowledging that there wasn't time enough for actual saplings to grow and flower by the start of the Games, the organisers had 'planted' artificial ones in flower pots across all the ranges.

Outside the stadium, saplings were yet to be planted on a patch of earth. Two stray dogs were seen wandering inside the range.

Speaking about the shooting range, located at a distance of 21 km from the Games Village, venue manager Manmeet Singh said, "This stadium is even better than the Beijing one as we have 80 shooting ranges. They had just 60."

Only eight athletes will reach the final range, Singh added.

Stating that the range has a four-tier security cover, OC officials said that they are equipped with metal detectors, scanners, radio frequency readers and tyre busters.

DMRC to give free space for CWG campaign

Published>Wed, Sep 15 10 02:52 AM

Commonwealth Games 2010 mascot Shera will soon adorn metro stations of Delhi and the National Capital Region. The organising committee of Commonwealth Games 2010 (CWG) has tied up with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for using the latter's properties, barring trains, to advertise for the Games.

As per the agreement between the two, the space will be let out for free but the organising committee headed by Suresh Kalmadi will have to pay for electricity and other amenities provided by DMRC. "The organising committee recently approached us with the proposal of using our properties for advertising. We have agreed to the proposal," DMRC managing director E Sreedharan told FE on the sidelines of launching a revamped website of the corporation.

He, however, refused to give details of how much fee will be charged from organising committee for providing various amenities or how much revenue will be foregone on letting out the space for free. "It (revenue foregone) is a small sum in the national interest," Sreedharan said. More than 23% of DMRC's revenue comes from advertising, parking and real estate development.

On being asked whether DMRC is contemplating to sponsor the CWG, Sreedharan said "as of now there is no such proposal".

Meanwhile, taking its partnership with Indian Railways forward, the committee will soon survey railway stations under Northern Railways to ascertain the advertising opportunities.

Fielding cost us the match: Tendulkar

Wed, Sep 15 10 01:22 AM

Durban, Sep 14 (PTI) Mumbai Indians skipper Sachin Tendulkar today blamed the fielders for his side''s defeat against South Australia in the Champions League and said now it would take something "special" from them to bring their campaign back on track in the tournament. Mumbai Indians put up a pathetic bowling and fielding performance as they could not grab the opportunities and eventually failed to defend a challenging 180, which has pushed them to the brink of elimination. "To get to 180 was an excellent job by the batsmen. It was the fielding that cost us the game. We needed to keep getting wickets at regular intervals and we had our opportunities but we couldn''t quite do it," Tendulkar said after the match. "Throughout it was 10-11 runs an over and we were very much in the game. We have to pick up our performance and it''s important that we produce something special," he added. Man-of-the-Match Daniel Harris, who smashed a 37-ball 56 to script a dramatic runchase along with skipper Michael Kalinger (50) after being dropped twice, admitted that luck was by their side. "We felt they bowled well early. It was about having wickets in the shed and we had some luck. Mumbai hit their lengths, we were facing Malinga for the first time but we got away with a bit of luck," he said. "We knew we were on track and the guys at the end played extremely well under pressure and did the business for us," he added.

Latif quits Pakistan role over spot-fixing

Wed, Sep 15 10 01:18 AM

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has resigned from a coaching position with the country's national body after being asked to explain comments he made about the current spot-fixing and betting scandal.

The former wicketkeeper recently appeared on a television show where he criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board for their handling of allegations against three players on their tour of England.

Test captain Salman Butt and pace bowlers Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Aamir are under investigation by British police for their role in the scandal, which has also led to their suspension by the International Cricket Council.

"I have sent my resignation today to the board which did not like my speaking on this important issue as I am employed with them in the academy," Latif, who played 37 tests and 166 one-day internationals for his country, told Reuters.

"I would like to make it clear here that while it is an honour to serve Pakistan cricket in any position I can't remain quiet on a key cricket issue that could determine the future of Pakistan cricket.

"As a former player and captain, people look up to me and expect me to speak honestly and without bias and that I have done without meaning anything personal against anyone."

Latif later confirmed he had accepted an offer from the Afghanistan cricket association to become their head coach.

"Yes they made me an offer and I have accepted it because I want to contribute in cricket as a coach," he said.

Latif said he would be leaving for Dubai later this week to supervise a training camp for the Afghan team.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has resigned from a coaching position with the country's national body after being asked to explain comments he made about the current spot-fixing and betting scandal.

Maradona heads Latin American cast vying for Portugal job

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 11:58 PM

Diego Maradona is among a trio of Latin American coaches keen to replace sacked coach Carlos Queiroz and revive Portugal's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) axed Queiroz last week in the wake of his six-month ban for insulting anti-doping agents and are expected name his successor in the next few days.

Maradona, out of work since leaving his position as Argentina coach after the World Cup, fellow Argentine Jose Pekerman and former Mexico coach Jose Aguirre have been linked with the position.

Former Sporting coach Paulo Bento is seen by the local media as the strongest candidate but according to other reports, some FPF directors believe Portugal need an overseas coach with an international pedigree who is used to dealing with global stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, who failed to shine under Queiroz.

Portugal's Euro 2012 qualifying hopes have been hit by a dismal start. A 4-4 draw at home to Cyprus was followed by a 1-0 defeat in Norway.

"It's true (Maradona is interested). Diego and I talked about it and it is a project that attracts us. He is willing and has availability, but has not been contacted yet," Alejandro Mancuso, one of Maradona's assistants during his spell as Argentina coach, told the A Bola sports daily.

Pekerman, another former Argentina coach, is also interested in the Portugal job, according to his agent.

"Many national sides wanted to hire him, but he was not interested. The Portuguese team, yes, that interests him," agent Jose Sanchez Parra told Portuguese radio Renascenca.

He added that Aguirre, who resigned as Mexico coach in June, has also shown an interest in the position.

Prior to Queiroz, Portugal also had a coach from Latin America. Brazil's Luiz Felipe Scolari took the team to the final of Euro 2004 and the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup.

CORRECTED - Mourinho wants third title, Real hoping for 10th

Tue, Sep 14 10 11:48 PM

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho says he is as desperate for a third personal Champions League triumph as the La Liga giants are to win their 10th European Cup.

Real begin their quest to end a poor run in Europe's elite club competition at home to Ajax Amsterdam on Wednesday.

Mourinho, who won the Champions League with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan last season, wants to be the first coach to claim the European Cup with three different clubs.

Real have failed to progress beyond the last 16 in the past six seasons and club President Florentino Perez has spent around 350 million euros ($451 million) on players and to lure Mourinho to the Bernabeu in a bid to restore success in Europe.

"Real Madrid want their 10th just as much as I want my third but we both know it's very difficult," the Portuguese former Chelsea manager told a news conference.

"There's a group of six, seven or eight teams that have what it takes to win this title," he said.

"Even though it's our first season together and we are in a period of construction, if we get past the opening round and get to the last 16 we'll start to get stronger and be more positive about the future."

Mourinho and his players are under pressure to entertain their fans on Wednesday after Saturday's laboured 1-0 La Liga win at home to Osasuna was greeted by impatient whistling from some supporters.

Ajax, four-times champions of Europe but making their first Champions League appearance since 2005-06, will not be easy opponents, Mourinho cautioned.

"Ajax is a great club with a great tradition," he said. "Both they and Real Madrid are monsters in the history of this competition. I am a big fan of the youth school (Ajax) has and they will be a difficult team to play."

English police quiz fourth Pakistan cricketer

Tue, Sep 14 10 11:18 PM

English police questioned a fourth Pakistani cricketer, fast bowler Wahab Riaz, on Tuesday over allegations of spot-fixing during the fourth test against England at Lords, team manager Yawar Saeed said.

"Initially we thought there wouldn't be time today for the questioning because of some reasons but the police called us up and the interview took place today for half an hour," he told Geo Super Channel.

The questioning came after the legal adviser to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said the International Cricket Council had agreed to convene a preliminary hearing into allegations of spot fixing against three other Pakistani players in 40 days time.

Tafazzul Rizvi told Reuters that the players, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, had exercised their right to a preliminary hearing against their suspension over the scandal and filed responses.

The players had asked for a hearing to put their point of view, Rizvi said. "The ICC will now convene a hearing in 40 days time."

The three players were suspended on Sept 4 by the ICC for their alleged involvement in fixing incidents, such as no-balls, in a betting scam.

Riaz was accompanied in London by the team's security manager and a barrister hired by the PCB, Elizabeth Robertson.

Riaz, 25, a left-armer, claimed five wickets on his debut in the third test against England and was a member of Pakistan's squad for the five-match one-day series, but he did not play in the first two.

London police have already interviewed test captain Butt and pace bowlers Amir and Asif.

The trio have returned to Pakistan but on the condition they would be available for police questioning when required.

Rizvi said the tour selection committee took the decision not to select Riaz for the one day matches, denying it was a result of ICC or PCB pressure.

"He is available for selection as any other player in the touring squad," Rizvi said.

England won the test series 3-1 and are 2-0 up in the one-day matches.

Karni Singh Range will see high scoring shot gun events

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 10:52 PM

New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) The Karni Singh Shooting Range, overlooking the Aravalli hills, has a breathtaking look with the landscaping and beautification in and around the stadium completed for the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Shooting Championship held here in February was the first test event. A lot of work has been done since the event took place and the range is now ready to host the shooting competition which is expected to fetch India's maximum medals.

Heavy green cover has added to the beauty of the stadium, which was built for the 1982 Asian Games.

The media was taken on a guided tour of the range Tuesday.

India's ace double trap shooter Ronjan Singh Sodhi, while demonstrating his skills to the media at the refurbished range, said that clear visibility at the open range for shot gun events will help the shooters to score high.

Sodhi, a world record holder, pointed out that the range had undergone several minor changes since the test event, and is the one of best in the world. The shooting range was in fact the first stadium to host a test event for the Commonwealth Games.

'I feel the range for the trap, double trap and skeet is one of the best in the world. There were some small bushes in the range and they were hindering a clear vision of the clay birds. But now they have been cut and we have a clear vision and it becomes easier for us. The precentage of missed chances will come down and it will be high scoring event,' he said.

Venue administrator Manmeet Singh Giondi said the Organising Committee has ensured that the whole compound is secured.

'Shooters won't be allowed to carry their guns to the Games Village. These will be escorted directly from the airport to the range. The armoury will be guarded round the clock and shooters will take the guns just before their event and will keep it back as soon as their rounds are completed. Their guns will be delivered to them again at the airport,' he said.

Anil Chowdhury, an IPS officer and security in-charge of the venue, said the Organising Committee is not taking any chances with the security.

'We have set up a three-tier security arrangement. At the gates automatic pillars, tyre busters and bollards have been constructed. There will be huge presence of Delhi Police officers outside the gate, besides watch towers and electric fences. We will also have policemen in plain clothes inside the stadium and in and around the range,' he said.

Paes not sure of his Davis Cup partner for doubles play

Tue, Sep 14 10 10:28 PM

Chennai, Sep 14 (PTI) Veteran Indian tennis player Leander Paes today said he is still unsure about his doubles partner in the crucial Davis Cup tie against Brazil starting here Friday. Without naming Mahesh Bhupati, Paes talked a lot about available options in the Indian team and said the non-playing captain S P Mishra would take the call as to who will partner him on second day of the tie on Saturday. "It is good to have options and it is going to be tough on the captain to decide. I have full confidence in S P Mishra whom I have known for many years. He has been our lucky captain and so it is up to him to decide," said Paes, who has scripted many memorable triumphs at the international levels. The most successful professional player of India, Paes let his emotions out taking pride on serving the country that he loves most. "For sure, this tie is something special for me. I still remember my first match in Davis Cup against Japan in Jaipur. It was 18-16 in the fifth set and we won the tie," he said on his five-set doubles match that he won along with Zeeshan Ali as India to thrash Japan. Within an hour of his arrival here this afternoon, Paes was at the SAF Games Tennis Stadium with other members of the Indian Davis Cup squad for a three-hour workout. Bhupathi was conspicuous by his absence since not having arrived here and thus Paes practised with Rohan Bopanna, whose morale is on the high having finished runner-up at the U S Open last Saturday. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association officials confirmed that Bhupathi would be arriving here by Jet Airways late tonight. Paes, who won his first ATP Grand-Slam Doubles title with Bhupathi at this same venue, paused a beat before recounting some of his greatest moments in Davis Cup when scribes reminded him that he is in to his 21st season in Davis Cup play.

We are keen to regularise betting: ICC chief executive

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 10:22 PM

Cape Town, Sep 14 (IANS) International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat Tuesday said he is keen to speak to governments of various cricket playing countries to consider the regulation of betting and also discuss the issue of verifying cricketer's agents.

Lorgat, present during the ICC's chief executives committee (CEC) meeting, said ICC must not and would not be complacent when it comes to tackling corruption.

'CEC has wisely recommended a thorough review of all our procedures and protocols and that is something which is already underway. I am especially keen to engage with governments to consider the regulation of betting and also to consider the accreditation of player representatives or agents,' said Lorgat.

The CEC at the meeting, reaffirmed the ICC's zero-tolerance stance against any form of corruption within the sport and wished to send a strong message to players and other stakeholders by supporting the decisive action taken by the ICC in the face of the recent spot-fixing allegations during the fourth Test match between England and Pakistan at Lord's.

Lorgat did not comment on the spot-fixing scandal which involved Pakistani cricketers Salman Butt, Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif.

'While the present investigations are going on, we will not discuss or comment on any specific issues but this incident is a warning for all of us. We must heed those warnings and heed them quickly.'

Cavendish gunning for first major points win

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 10:18 PM

Houghton's boys face unknown rivals in Namibia

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 10:02 PM

New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) India have a tough task of facing unknown rivals in Nambia in their third international football friendly of the month here Wednesday at the Ambedkar Stadium.

India lost 0-1 to Thailand in Bangkok and in the return leg lost 1-2 here last week. In their last two matches, India were successful in getting the ball in the rival half for most part but they clearly lacked a finisher.

In the last match, it was only after the 70th minute when Bhaichung Bhutia came on as a substitute that the Indian team started creating some goal bound moves.

Against 115th ranked Namibia, India, ranked 138th in the FIFA rankings, will have a tough time if they don't get their act right. For Bob Houghton's boys it will be a chance to salvage some pride after two consecutive losses against Thailand.

Houghton said Tuesday on the eve of the match that he will replace forward Mohammad Rafi, who played his second international match last week, with Abhishek Yadav.

'Abhishek and Chhetri will start. Abhishek has played well in Portugal and I have never seen him in better form as he is now,' Houghton said.

Lack of experience clearly reflected on Rafi's game last week and Houghton was forced to replace him in the 70th minute Bhutia.

Houghton said that against Namibia, Bhutia will also come in but in the later stages of the game.

'I want Bhutia to reach his peak by November when we shift our base to Dubai for training,' said Houghton

Against Thailand, the midfield looked disoriented and with Renedy Singh still recovering from a hamstring injury, Clifford Miranda will start as left winger and Anthony Pereira will move to right flank.

Defence is also a worry for Houghton as central defender Anwar Ali and wing-back Surkumar Singh have been ruled out due to injuries.

Houghton is planning to play Syed Rahim Nabi in one of the wide positions to give his team more attacking options.

On unknown opposition Namibia, Houghton said: 'I don't have much idea about Namibia. In situations when you play unknown oppositions the best thing is not to try too much and stick to our original style of play.'

Namibia are without seven first team players for the match, but their Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet sounded confident that his boys will be tough to beat in the match. September 15 is not a FIFA match day, and the foreign-based players didn't get a clearance from their respective clubs for their national duty.

'We have left out three players who play in South African league, one is playing in Angola and three are in Europe. They are not with us here. But we are looking forward to Wednesday's match. India have qualified for AFC Asian Cup, so it will be a tough match,' Saintfiet said.

Saintfiet said that his team was looking for match practice as most of the squad have not played for four months since their domestic league have been postponed.

'We don't have much match practice as most of the players have not played after the league had a break four months ago. So we are happy to have come here and play an international friendly,' said the Belgian after his side's training session here.

Unlike India, Namibia's have played three international matches so far this year.

In two friendlies in March, they drew with South Africa 1-1, and held Bosnia and Herzegovina to a goalless draw and lost 1-3 to Gambia in the qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations earlier this month.

Gill snubs gold medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar's coach Satpal

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 09:58 PM

New Delhi, Sep.14 (ANI): In a setback to wrestler Sushil Kumar's celebrations after winning gold medal in the world championship in Moscow, his coach Satpal Singh had to suffer embarrassment on Tuesday when Union Sports Minister M.S.Gill turned him away from a photo opportunity in the national capital.

Satpal Singh, a Dronacharya awardee, has been a highly respectful wrestler of the country. He was a Gold Medalist in 1982 Asian Games and a Bronze medalist in 1974 Asian Games.

The incident occurred in full media glare, as journalists were about to click a group photo of officials with Sushi Kumar at Gill's residence.

Gill asked the Satpal to step aside while he himself posed for the camera along with Sushil.

He later chose to invite Coach Yashwir, who accompanied the Indian team during the event in Moscow for the photo session while still keeping Satpal away from all the action.

"I don't know why he did that. You have to ask him, my job is to coach. I coached Sushil for so many years and I will continue to produce more wrestlers," said Satpal, Dronacharya awardee later.

Responding to the incident, Sushil Kumar said that he was hurt by MS Gill's actions.

"Satpal has been my coach for the past 13-14 years. He is coach to over 900 kids. If a coach is insulted then his pupil also feels insulted," Kumar said.

For MS Gill though it must have been a case of Deja vu, considering he had infamously snubbed Saina Nehwal's coach Gopi Chand when the two had come visiting him last year, asking only the second Indian to win the All England Championship to introduce himself, an NDTV report stated. (ANI)

Test cricket is still exciting: Sehwag

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 09:32 PM

New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) Test cricket may be losing popularity with Twenty20 catching the imagination of the younger generation, but swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag says the longer version of the game has never been more exciting than it is today.

'There used to be so many draws in Test matches that would keep the crowds away but things have changed. We are getting more and more results in Test cricket and even a target of 350 can be chased in a day in a Test match.

'Cricket has not changed. A few innovations have come to make it more attractive. The approach has changed in some ways. Once a total of 200 was considered a winning one in One-day cricket. Not any more,' Sehwag said on the changing trends in cricket.

Sehwag released a book 'Hamare Kaptan... Nayudu Se Dhoni tak...' penned by Surya Prakash Chaturvedi at a function held at the Indian Islamic Cultural centre Tuesday.

'It is nice to see that books are being written on our past heroes. It will help the current generation to know about our former greats. I will certainly read and share the information with my team-mates,' Sehwag said.

The book gives an insight on all the captains who have led India and Sehwag acknowledged there was need to preserve the history of the game.

'Such books record the happenings for posterity and I am glad to be a part of it. There are some names that I have not heard but then that's because we did not have access to information on former cricketers when we were growing up. Books like this will help us understand our cricketing past better. We would certainly want to know how our former captains led the teams, what were their tactics, how they batted, bowled.'

Sehwag congratulated wrestler Sushil Kumar on winning gold at the World Championship.

'It is a fantastic achievement. He also comes from Najafgarh and that makes it all the more memorable for me. We all should feel proud of him. His akhara was close to my house.'

Sehwag wished success to the Commonwealth Games.

'It is a great opportunity for everyone. I am sure the Games will be a great success. We all must support the Games.'

Later in the day, Sehwag was present at the launch of Timex range of watches to coincide with the World Cup next year.

'It helps to play at home. We have shown good form for some time and it would be great to carry this good form into the World Cup. The conditions do favour us and I don't think we would be under any pressure. Home advantage can be great for our motivation.

Rajevac quits Ghana for Saudi Arabian club job

Tue, Sep 14 10 09:12 PM

Milovan Rajevac has quit as coach of World Cup quarter-finalists Ghana after failing to agree a new contract and taken charge of Saudi Arabian club Al Ahly Jeddah instead.

The 56-year-old Serb signed an 18-month deal with Al Ahly, the Ghana Football Association said in a brief statement on Tuesday.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) said last month Rajevac was close to signing a new contract.

"The GFA has officially been notified by Mr. Milovan Rajevac of his desire to take up a fresh challenge elsewhere," the GFA said.

"He relinquishes his position as head coach of the Black Stars after two years and the GFA would like to place on record our gratitude for his services and wish him all the best in his future career.

"Though we find his departure unfortunate after two years of great strides, we confirm the search for a new coach has begun."

The quietly-spoken Rajevac emerged from coaching anonymity to make a big impact during his two years in charge of the Black Stars.

Ghana qualified in style for the World Cup finals in South Africa and also reached the final of the African Nations Cup in Angola at the start of the year.

The team's charge to the last eight of the World Cup was all the more impressive as they were without midfield talisman, Chelsea's Michael Essien, through injury.

Rajevac's departure means all six coaches in charge of African teams at the World Cup have now left their posts. Algeria's Rabah Saadane resigned earlier this month while the coaches of Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Africa departed after the tournament.

Pak's below par performance in England due to bad management: Qadir

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 01:58 PM

Karachi, Sept.14 (ANI): Former Pakistan leg-spinner Abdul Qadir has blamed poor and bad management for the national team's below par performance in the Test and one-day series in England.

He also said that the lack of a game plan and inappropriate selection of the team were reasons behind Pakistan's failure against England in the ongoing ODI series.

"I don't think it is the players who should be blamed for the below par performance in the ongoing ODI series. It is the team management who has completely failed the side," The News quoted Qadir, as saying.

Qadir also said Kamran Akmal should have been sent lower down the order to knock off a few boundaries in the end, and added that Fawad Alam should be sent up the order as he is incapable of scoring some quick boundaries.

He described pacer Mohammad Irfan as crude and said he needed some more time to get his talent polished.

"He is not yet ready for international matches and he need to learn few more things. He may prove himself an asset for the country in the coming years but right now he is not ready," Qadir said.

Qadir said that he has been calling for a major change in the team ahead of the World Cup. (ANI)

The No. 1-ranked Spaniard quickly took a lead in the third set and never let it go.

Redknapp eyes England manager role

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 01:42 PM

London, Sep 14(ANI): Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has said that he is ready to replace England manager Fabio Capello when the Italian's contract ends in 2012.

"I have proved I can do what I can do as a manager by getting Tottenham to fourth place from where we were," The Sun quoted Redknapp, as saying.

"Whatever I do at Tottenham - in the Champions League or the Premier League - my record has not been too shabby. I don't ever think I have got anything to prove," he added.

However, he also said that two years is a long time to make plans about.

"In two years I could be manager of Poole Town - who knows? You don't know what is around the corner in football," Redknapp said.

"I certainly don't look two years ahead - there would be no point in doing that," he added.

Redknapp had earlier said that only English coaches should be considered for the position.

"Should the England job only be for the English? I would back that. I'll get slaughtered, I'm sure, for saying it, but I want to see an English boy have a go," Redknapp had said.

"The coaching badge now takes about three years to do. They have to go through all kinds of psychology courses, as well as the football stuff. If you can't produce someone out of all that who can manage the country, then what we should do is send them over to Italy to do their coaching badge there!"

"Maybe if they can do the Italian coaching badge, then they will be better at the job than having done the courses here in England," he added. (ANI)

Amir mulling revealing all about Lord's Test 'spot-fixing' scandal

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 01:28 PM

London, Sep 14(ANI): Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir is reportedly contemplating co-operating with police and International Cricket Council investigators in the 'spot-fixing' scandal which has rocked the game of cricket.

Amir has returned to Pakistan under heavy security, and is believed to be staying in a remote village in Punjab province, where he is considering his next move.

According to the Courier Mail, the 18-year-old wants to tell his story and possibly give evidence against Test captain Salman Butt and fellow fast bowler Mohammad Asif, who are under investigation for alleged involvement in a 150,000-pound betting scam.

Given his tender age, inexperience and potential co-operation with authorities, it is believed that Amir could receive a watered-down penalty compared to the life bans on others if they are found guilty.

However, choosing to save his skin could have dire consequences, as it would not go down well with the illegal bookies and gangsters behind the scandals.

British tabloid 'News of The World' has alleged that the three cricketers were involved in a 150,000-pound 'spot-fixing' racket with London-based Mazhar Majeed.

The tabloid claims that they have video evidence to prove that the players were bribed to bowl 'no-balls' in the Lord's Test against England.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has provisionally suspended the three players pending a decision on the charges.

"In accordance with the provisions of the code, this means they are immediately barred from participating in all cricket and related activities until the case has been concluded," the ICC had said in a statement. (ANI)

Man U will snatch back Premier League title from Chelsea this season: Ferdinand

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 01:22 PM

London, Sep 14(ANI): Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has said that his club would rip the Premier League title from Chelsea's grasp this year.

Ferdinand, who is line to return to action after a knee injury, also reckons that Chelsea should not get carried away with the four-point lead they currently have over United.

"We enter every competition to win. I've said that every year since I've been here and that's just the way this club runs," The Sun quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

"Seeing Chelsea lift the title last season did hurt us, but you can't always have everything. We were disappointed considering how close it was and the injuries we had at key points during the season."

"Fair play to Chelsea for winning it, but it's up to us to get it back," he added.

Ferdinand has not played since a training-ground collision with his England colleague Emile Heskey ended with him damaging knee ligaments and missing the World Cup in South Africa.

He is expected to take part in United's Champions League clash with Scottish champions Rangers on Tuesday. (ANI)

Fergie blames last minute defensive horrors for stuttering start to Premier League season

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 01:16 PM

London, Sep 14(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has slammed his defenders for the club's stuttering start to the Premier League season.

United has dropped four points in their four League games so far, throwing away winning positions late on to draw against Fulham and Everton.

"It has been a lack of concentration in our defending. It is those last few moments," The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.Defensively on Saturday we were very good until that very last moment," he added.

Ferguson further said that despite conceding twice in injury-time to draw 3-3 against Everton, the team could have won the game if they had managed to be ahead 'by a good margin'.

"We did have some fantastic chances to put the game well to bed. We could have increased our goal tally by a good margin. That is indicative of this particular type of team," Ferguson said.

"They play great football, create great openings and great opportunities and they are a bit wasteful. That has been the case in all our games this season and a few of them last year."

"Those last moments in games when we have been in front shouldn't happen again. We have been burnt twice," he added. (ANI)
