ICC should investigate Amir's first-ball wide in Lord's Test: Adviser

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 12:28 PM

London, Sep 14(ANI): An International Cricket Council (ICC) anti-corruption unit adviser and a senior betting industry expert has urged the governing body to investigate the first-ball wide from Pakistan fast bowler Mohammed Amir in the tarnished Lord's Test against England.

Mark Davies said that the ICC inquiry into allegations of bowling 'no-balls' to order - against suspended Pakistan trio of Amir, Mohammad Asif and captain Salman Butt - should also focus on the opening delivery, a wide that cost five runs.

"The knowledge that five runs will be scored from the first ball could be used in several spot-betting and spread betting markets, the kind of books that the ICC ACU know are made in the illegal betting markets in India and other parts of Asia," The News quoted Davies, as saying.

"Most obviously it could be used to make money on the spread for the number of deliveries before the first wide is bowled, then any spread on the number of runs from the first ball, the number of runs in the first over and also to take a position on the number of runs scored during the first three or first 15 overs," he added.

Davies also refused to agree with the commentators that the slope at Lord's was an explanation behind the delivery.

"It is extraordinary that any top-class bowler would ever bowl a ball like that, full stop," he said.

Davies, one of the founders of Betfair -the world's largest internet betting exchange, has been an adviser to the anti-corruption unit on all aspects of cricket's links with the gaming industry. (ANI)

Move to engage 'own security advice' for Delhi CWG 'defies logic': NZOC

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 12:26 PM

Auckland, Sep 14(ANI): The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) has said that the decision of Netball New Zealand (NNZ), Hockey New Zealand (HNZ) and the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) to engage their own security advice ahead of next month's Delhi Commonwealth Games defies logic.

According to reports, that three sports bodies had commissioned independent security advice amid rising concerns about Delhi's readiness for the mega event.

However, New Zealand team Chef de mission Dave Currie said: Clearly the Athletes Federation [NZFA] are working with a range of sports ... but to me there's no logic at all."

"They've chosen to do it, I don't know why they've done it, but it's certainly the sports that are working with the Athletes Federation," The New Zealand Herald quoted Currie, as saying.

Currie further said that the NZOC has held a pre-Games briefing, and the advice it was getting from the Indian government and from the security agencies of England, Wales, Australia and Canada, was the best that could be received.

"If you think about it, you've got five countries and all the resources of their security agencies [are] feeding into a common pool. It defies logic that an independent company without the resources and the breadth of all of that can give any other view," Currie said.

He also stressed that security fears were being heightened by "mischievous" speculation.

"They [NZFA] say their belief is that governments are more concerned about other areas like [free trade agreements] and therefore won't be as objective about it. I think that's a nonsense really," Currie said.

"I am confident they will give us clear, objective information," he added. (ANI)

Djokovic dispels doubts with gritty run at U.S. Open

Novak Djokovic of Serbia reacts during his men's final match against Rafael Nadal of Spain...

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 11:46 AM

A brilliant run at the U.S. Open ended in defeat on Monday for Novak Djokovic, who managed to take consolation in his return to top form and the way he showed his heart by battling to the end.

"I cannot hide the disappointment," the 23-year-old Serb told reporters after falling 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-2 to world number one Rafa Nadal of Spain in the rain-delayed men's singles final at Flushing Meadows. "It's just I'm not gonna cry or complain about that. It's just the way it is."

Djokovic has battled questions in the past about his grit after retiring from matches due to heat exhaustion, difficulty breathing, blisters and cramps.

He has twice retired against Nadal in grand slams, waving the white flag during the quarter-finals of the 2006 French Open after losing the first two sets, and again during the 2007 semi-finals at Wimbledon.

As reigning Australian Open champion in 2009, he retired from his quarter-final with Andy Roddick because of cramping.

Djokovic, however, dispelled any doubts about his heart with his run over the past two weeks, which included a five-set comeback over compatriot Viktor Troicki in the first round, and another come-from-behind five-set victory over five-times Open winner Roger Federer in the semi-finals.

Djokovic dismissed two match points to fend off Federer, tapping his heart with his racket after reaching back to rifle two forehand winners to stay alive.

His victory denied Federer a trip to his seventh successive U.S. Open final and allowed the Serb to leapfrog the Swiss as world number two.

Against Nadal, fixed on claiming the U.S. Open title to complete a collection of all four grand slam crowns, he again fought back after dropping the first set, and gave the Spaniard a mighty battle, denying him on 20 of 26 break points.

"Of course, I am feeling bad about my loss. I wanted that trophy, and I know I gave my maximum to get it," said Djokovic, who was also the runner-up in 2007 to Federer.

"But when I sleep over the night, tomorrow I will wake up as a new man," he vowed. "You know, I will continue on working hard and waiting for the next chance to come."

While Djokovic was made to work hard to reach the final, Nadal advanced without the loss of a set. Gradually worn down in a battle of booming groundstrokes, the Serb made no excuses.

"I was feeling good on the court tonight from a physical perspective, and just running all over the court and getting a lot of balls back," he said.

"It was just, maybe emotionally I was a little bit drained after the semi-final match, but I recovered. This is one of the matches where the opponent plays better than you, and you just have to congratulate him and tell him, 'You're better.'"

Djokovic had not reached a grand slam final since his 2008 Australian Open win and he took heart in the way he snapped back to relevance by following up a semi-final run at Wimbledon with his stirring U.S. Open campaign.

"I've played the best tennis certainly the last seven, eight months, maybe the whole year," he said.

"So from Wimbledon up to this point, I feel much more comfortable on the court, more confident and getting this aggressive game back, and the game that I need to have in order to stay at the top."

Tainted Pak trio can seek ICC hearing by Sept 20

Tue, Sep 14 10 11:44 AM

Karachi, Sep 14 (PTI) The suspended Pakistani trio of Test captain Salman Butt and pace bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir have until September 20 to ask for a hearing of the ICC''s Anti-Corruption and Security unit to challenge the provisional suspension imposed on them. Sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board said the three players, who allegedly conspired to bowl no balls to order in the Lord''s Test against England last month, have to respond to the Notice of Charge issued to them by the ACSU general manager. "The three players are consulting the PCB legal advisors, the Pakistan High Commission and the British barrister in London on how to exercise their right to a hearing before a an ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal," one source said. "They have to submit a written request for such a hearing to ACSU General Manager as soon as possible, but in any event within fourteen (14) days of the date they received the Notice of Charge leading to their suspension," the source said. The three players, who have been allowed by the Scotland Yard to come back after a surety provided by the Pakistan government, have not spoken to the media since reaching their homes. The source said the response from the players will be very important because if they don''t send a request by the deadline for a tribunal hearing, it would mean they have waived their entitlement to a hearing. "It will also be deemed that they have admitted that they have committed the offence (s) under the Anti-corruption code specified in the Notice of Charge sent to them by the ACSU," the source added. The source said there were also indications that the PCB, after preparing its case, will ask for a provisional hearing into the suspensions from the Chairman of the ICC code of conduct commission who will eventually appoint the tribunal to hear the case of the players. "The provisional hearing is also important because at this hearing it is the burden of the ACSU''s General Manager to establish there is a strong, arguable case against the Players," the source stated. "The players shall be given an opportunity to contest their provincial suspensions at the provisional hearing," the source added.

'Love-rat' Wayne Rooney's wife agrees to take him back

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 11:22 AM

London, Sept 14 (ANI): 'Love-rat' Wayne Rooney has finally some relief - his wife Coleen has agreed to take him back.

The reunion came after the footballer agreed to a string of Coleen's demands, top of the list being an ultimatum: "One more girl, Wayne, and we're finished."

Grim-faced Coleen finally arrived back at the couple's 4-million-pound home in Prestbury, Cheshire, with a bundle of clothes piled in the back of her Range Rover.

Later, Rooney drove into mansion and then their little Kai, who had been looked after by Coleen's parents Tony and Colette, joined them.

A source revealed the couple still has a long way to go with Wayne facing a lengthy period in the spare room.

"It's a slow process, a healing process. Coleen wants to make it work and so does Wayne," the Sun quoted the source as saying.

"But they are in their home together and they are talking everything through. They are both bending over backwards to try and sort it out. They know they have to," the source added.(ANI)

Outspoken Latif gets PCB notice, may resign soon

Tue, Sep 14 10 11:12 AM

Karachi, Sep 14 (PTI) Pakistan''s former captain Rashid Latif has decided to step down as wicketkeeping coach in the Pakistan Cricket Board after being issued a showcause notice for speaking about the raging spot-fixing and betting scandal on a television show. Sources told PTI that Latif would be sending his resignation to the board shortly along with his response to the notice. "Apparently the board has taken strong exception to Latif appearing on a popular sports talk show on Geo super channel in which he made some strong comments on the spot-fixing issue," one source disclosed. "Latif has been asked in the notice issued by the board to explain how he appeared on the show without the permission of the board as he is a proper employee of the PCB," the source said. The source said the board had asked Latif to also explain his comments that the PCB mishandled the whole issue. Latif said on the show that had PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt been responsible, he would have suspended the tainted trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir himself without waiting for the ICC to do this. Latif also criticised the formation of the inquiry committee after the Australian tour and the people selected to sit on it. "Latif is a straight forward person and he feels that if the board expects him to keep quiet just because he is working for them in a specialist cricketing position, he can''t let this happen. Being a former captain and player, he has a duty towards Pakistan cricket," one source stated. Incidentally, sources disclosed that Latif has also been offered the position of head coach with the Afghanistan cricket team and is seriously considering accepting the offer and helping the Afghans climb up the international cricket ladder.

World champion Sushil returns home to hero's welcome

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 11:08 AM

New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) India's first world champion wrestler Sushil Kumar came home to a hero's welcome here early Tuesday with hundreds of fans and junior grapplers turning up at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Sushil became the first Indian to win the World Championship after he defeated Russian Alan Gogaev in the final of the 66 kg freestyle in Moscow Sunday.

Flanked by his coach Satpal and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) secretary general Kartar Singh, Sushil came out of the airport amid loud cheers from fans. Both Satpal and Kartar are also former Asian Games gold medallists.

The 27-year-old Sushil, who looked tired, said he had been confident of winning the World Championship. He gave the credit to his coach Satpal, who had been with him when he won the Beijing Olympics bronze medal in 2008.

'I worked hard under my coach Satpal for the last one year and I am happy that I have done it. I had no tension before the final as I was well prepared for it. I fought the bout with a free mind and without any tension,' said Sushil.

'I have reached this stage because of my coach. My main focus is now the Commonwealth Games and I am confident of doing well there,' he said.

Just before his final bout, he said, team officials had told him that he was on the brink of becoming the first Indian to win the World Championship.

'But even though I knew that I was going to create history, I did not put myself under any extra pressure. My preparation for the world meet was good and I was sure that winning the gold would not be an impossible task.'

He said his semi-final bout against Jabrail Hasanov of Azerbaijan and the final against Gogaev were the toughest in his career.

Getting an Olympic bronze was tough, but for him the World Championship gold will be always special.

'In Beijing, I lost to a Ukrainian wrestler in the first round and had to go through the repechage rounds. It was a tough job as I had to win three bouts to get the bronze but nothing could be compared with the World Championship,' said Sushil.

City face fellow big spenders in Europa league

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 10:58 AM

Manchester City, a club whose lavish spending has so far failed to produce the anticipated returns, have much in common with opponents Salzburg when they kick off their Europa League campaign on Thursday.

The two big spenders, who meet in Group A, are among 48 teams in action, ranging from former European champions Liverpool, Juventus and Porto on the one hand to Swiss second division outfit Lausanne on the other.

Uruguay's Diego Forlan, voted the top player at the World Cup, will lead the attack as holders Atletico Madrid, who beat Fulham in last season's final, begin the defence of their crown at Aris Salonika in Group B

Like Manchester City, Austrian champions Salzburg have also found that spending vast sums of cash does not necessarily bring success, having yet again missed out on the Champions League.

City spent more than 50 million pounds ($77 million) in the January transfer window alone but still failed to get a top four finish in the Premier League. They spent another 120 million pounds in the close season in an attempt to build a side good enough to qualify for next year's Champions League.

They hope their policies will not take them down the same road as Salzburg, which was bought and rebranded by the Red Bull soft drinks company in 2005 amid protests by the fans.

Since then, Salzburg have won three Austrian titles but, despite spending around 200 million euros ($255.9 million) -- a huge amount by Austrian Bundesliga standards -- and signing 64 new players, the Champions League dream has eluded them.

Salzburg have fallen in the final stage of Champions League qualifying four times in the past five seasons and this year, despite making 11 new signings, they were eliminated by Hapoel Tel Aviv.

BLENDING IN

To add to their woes, they have made a poor start to the Austrian season, taking only five points from their first five games.

"We must not forget that we have some young players with a promising future and to blend in young players takes time," said their Dutch coach Huub Stevens after a 0-0 draw at home to LASK Linz at the weekend.

Clubs from 24 countries will be represented in the group stage, although that still leaves more than half of UEFA's member associations without representatives in the competition. Those missing include Scotland, Serbia, Sweden.

The competition is in its third incarnation, having started out as the Fairs Cup in the 1950s.

After gone steadily downhill since the mid-1980s, it experienced a revival last season after its name was changed from the UEFA Cup and a new, simpler format was introduced, replacing the cumbersome groups of five with the more orthodox groups of four.

One club which has not been spending is Lausanne, whose annuall budget is around 4 million Swiss francs ($3.9 million). Having knocked out Lokomotiv Moscow in the final qualifying round, they host CSKA Moscow in Group F.

For the second season in a row, Liverpool and Juventus, usually Champions League contenders, have found themselves setting their sights much lower.

Liverpool, whose coach Roy Hodgson led Fulham to last season's final with a memorable campaign, host Romania's Steaua Bucharest, European champions in 1986, in Group K while Juventus entertain Poland's Lech Poznan in Group A.

PREVIEW - Milan welcome extra eyes for Auxerre test

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 09:58 AM

AC Milan welcome Auxerre for their Champions League opener on Wednesday and the introduction of goalline officials to help referees comes at the perfect time for the Rossoneri.

Matches in Europe's premier club competition will have five officials this season after soccer bosses decided to extend a trial from the Europa League.

Milan should be glad of the extra two pairs of eyes after being incensed with the refereeing in Saturday's 2-0 Serie A defeat at promoted Cesena where the visitors felt they had two goals wrongly ruled out for offside and one for handball.

"We didn't play that badly. Those weren't offside," club owner and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi told reporters.

The seven-times European champions, who have not won in six home games in Europe spanning almost two years, even put an extraordinary statement out on their website with the headline: "Without any further comment".

"Law 6 on the assistant referee reads: 'If an assistant referee is not totally sure about an offside offence, the flag should not be raised'," read the article.

New coach Massimiliano Allegri will be more concerned about Zlatan Ibrahimovic missing a penalty on debut as the pair gear up for their Champions League bows with the club.

INCREASED SPEED

The striker, signed on an initial season loan from Barcelona, has often flattered to deceive in the competition but the Swede is again expected to lead a three-pronged attack with Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato.

Milan have a slight worry over defender Thiago Silva after the Brazilian limped off against Cesena in Milan's second league game of the campaign, where their increased speed of movement was one positive compared to last term's patchy displays.

Auxerre will enter the immense San Siro without having won a league game in this fledgling season, drawing four and losing one.

Third in France last term, they conceded an stoppage-time goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Caen and lie 17th in the standings.

"Football is sometimes cruel," coach Jean Fernandez said.

The other opening Group G game pits Real Madrid against Ajax Amsterdam.

Probable teams:

Milan: 32-Christian Abbiati; 25-Daniele Bonera, 33-Thiago Silva, 13-Alessandro Nesta, 77-Luca Antonini; 21-Andrea Pirlo, 23-Massimo Ambrosini, 10-Clarence Seedorf; 7-Alexandre Pato, 11-Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 80-Ronaldinho

Auxerre: 1-Oliver Sorin; 2-Cedric Hengbart, 6-Adama Coulibay, 12-Jean-Pascal Mignot, 23-Jeremy Berthod; 17-Benoit Pedretti, 21-Steeven Langil, 29-Delvin Ndinga, 8-Anthony Le Tallec; 14-Dennis Oliech, 18-Roy Contout

PREVIEW - Bayern hope to end goal drought against Roma

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 09:48 AM

Bayern Munich know they must end their goal drought when they host AS Roma in their opening Champions League group match on Wednesday if they are to avoid putting themselves under pressure again.

Last year, the German club got into a tight corner in the group stage of the competition and had to win their final two matches to escape an early exit.

They made it through and eventually lost to Inter Milan in the final.

"Against Roma we need to make sure we avoid making the group phase into a tension-filled affair like last season," striker Thomas Mueller told reporters on Monday.

Bayern, who drew 0-0 at home to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Saturday, have scored just two goals in three league matches, and none since Aug. 20.

"There does not seem to be a logical explanation for this (lack of goals)," said Mueller.

The Bavarians faced early problems this season, with players who had taken part in the World Cup having a shortened preparation time and winger Arjen Robben being ruled out injured until the end of the year.

"We definitely did not have a perfect pre-season training. But this needs to change now," Mueller said.

Bayern will also be without playmaker Franck Ribery, serving out the remainder of a three-match ban following a straight red card in last season's Champions League semi-final against Olympique Lyon.

Toni Kroos is the most likely candidate to replace him on the wing.

ROMA CRUSHED

Claudio Ranieri's Roma side were hammered 5-1 at Cagliari on Saturday in their second Serie A game. They fell apart after Nicolas Burdisso, the former Inter defender whom they had worked all summer to sign, gave away a penalty and was sent off midway through the first half.

Captain Francesco Totti was surprisingly substituted for Burdisso's younger brother and defender Guillermo to help them cope with 10 men but the ploy failed spectacularly.

The injury-prone Totti was taken off with the Bayern game in mind, although he is now a slight doubt because of an intestinal virus.

Forward Marco Borriello, a new loan signing from AC Milan, had a debut to forget but should keep his place for the Champions League encounter.

"We have to start over with determination and look each other in the eyes to find some positives," Ranieri told reporters.

Roma, last season's Serie A runners-up, are in the process of being sold after racking up huge debts and their transfer deals were limited during the August window.

Brazilian striker Adriano was one notable name brought in and he was surprisingly called up for the Bayern game after making a fast recovery from a hamstring injury.

Left back John Arne Riise took a bang on the head while away with Norway and is not fit, while defender Philippe Mexes, midfielder Rodrigo Taddei and forward Mirko Vucinic will not make the trip because of injury.

Teams (probable):

Bayern Munich:

1-Hans-Joerg Butt; 21-Philipp Lahm, 5-Daniel van Buyten, 28-Holger Badstuber, 26-Diego Contento; 23-Danijel Pranjic, 31-Bastian Schweinsteiger, 17-Mark van Bommel, 39-Toni Kroos; 25-Thomas Mueller, 18-Miroslav Klose.

AS Roma:

27-Julio Sergio; 77-Marco Cassetti, 4-Juan, 29-Nicolas Burdisso, 2-Cicinho; 7-David Pizarro, 16-Daniele De Rossi, 20-Simone Perrotta; 94-Jeremy Menez; 10-Francesco Totti, 22-Marco Borriello.

Damage Control

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 04:17 AM

The Delhi Commonwealth Games (CWG) has till now attracted attention for all the wrong reasons. From allegations of corruption to repeated delays in completion of projects, the CWG has been facing flak from all quarters, attracting negative publicity. The common man, especially the Delhi citizen, does not identify with the Games. Although ticket sales are in full swing, CWG merchandise sales have begun and the theme song has been unveiled by India's music maestro AR Rahman, there still remain misgivings about the Games in the minds of people.

Is it too late to repair the CWG's brand image? With less than a month to go for the Games to begin, can the CWG swing public opinion in its favour? Can the spin doctors help the tide turn in favour of the CWG?

Brandwagon asked six of the best creative minds in the Indian advertising fraternity to come up with strategies that may undo the damage to brand CWG. Each of them acknowledged that much damage had been done to the image of the country and its ability to hold an international sports event. But with a little bit of honesty, and some smart campaigns, CWG can still instill a sense of pride and ownership in the minds of Indians, they believe.

So, while Leo Burnett's KV Sridhar said arousing the patriotic spirit of Indians was essential, Rahul Ghosh of TBWA said acknowledging the mistakes is the first step towards turning the tide. Ghosh suggests that ordinary citizens should be recruited as overseers and experts for a people's organising committee.

"Let us wear the hurt we feel with pride" says Creativeland Asia's Sajan Raj Kurup. The idea is to capture the negative feeling of an entire country and turn it on its head into a positive movement. For Rediffusion Y&R's Minakshi Achan, it is the "spirit of the Games" that needs to be ignited in the minds of people.

Prasanna Sankhe of Publicis Ambience suggests that each state should come forward to host a sports discipline depending on the facilities it already has, thus solving the problem of impossible deadlines. The focus will then come back from completing the stadiums to actually having the best Games, he says.

Mudra Group's Bobby Pawar tickles the funny bone when he suggests a campaign blaming all the mess on the aliens. On a more serious note, Pawar says it is the innocent sportmen who stand to lose the most if the common man turns away from the CWG. So, a campaign focussing on the sportstars could help stem the damage and win the people's trust. Hope the CWG organisers are listening.

Hurt. But I support

Sajan Raj Kurup

Founder and creative chairman,

Creativeland Asia

It is a campaign and an activation idea that is designed to strike a chord with opinion leaders among young India. Enough muck has been thrown. Enough shame has been brought. While the guilty must be punished, it is also important that as a nation we keep sports above the greed of a handful of people. When we sat to write the campaign, the brief we set for ourselves is how do we use the hurt we feel, the shame we have experienced, to propel a movement that has the potential to create a resurgence of sports. We are hurting as a nation, as a government, as sportsmen and as sport fans. Let's not cover that hurt. In fact, let us wear the hurt we feel with pride. Let us use that feeling to tell the world that we are not about to give up hope and abandon sports administration in our country. Let this symbol keep our fight against the corrupt and the fight for sports in India alive.

So the idea is to create a participative demo that captures the negative feeling of a whole country and turns it on its head into a positive movement. The weapon or the symbol will be just like every successful movement in history-- this (potential) one too has a simple yet powerful symbol. A white bandage cross. The kind we wear on an open wound. The slogan 'Hurt. But I support', a simple yet graceful and evocative message that turns the negativity we feel into a positive call for action.

We can execute this campaign in a couple of ways. Create 'Hurt. But I support' pages on social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, etc. Create print campaigns on similar lines. We can also create t-shirts and lapel pics using the 'white bandage' symbol and tagline and request everyone we can to wear them. We can then extend this idea and create a short video using celebrities from actors, to ministers to sportsmen to artists?requesting them to wear the t-shirt and the lapel pin and to appeal to people that there are corrupt people in the system. But let's not abandon the games. We can also partner with television channels like news channels, youth channels, music channels and request the anchors to wear the t-shirt or the lapel pin maybe for a day. The lapel pin and the t-shirt will remind us of the shame and the controversies and therefore motivate us to turn CWG into a world-class event.

The aliens did it

Bobby Pawar

Chief creative officer, Mudra Group

Blame it on the extra-terrestrials

We can run a campaign that exposes a vicious plot by extra-terrestrial beings to embarrass India. The television films will look like candid footage taken by journalists who do sting operations. They will show how aliens brainwashed key people in the CWG Organising Committee and made them do stupid things. The ads will urge all Indians to foil this evil plan by supporting the Games wholeheartedly.

Blogs will give further details on the aliens, their plot, where they landed and how they intend to eventually take over the Olympics and reduce it to a sham.

The tone of this campaign should be serious and it should not be released by the government but by the T.S.S.S.F.I. (The Secret Society that is Secretly Fighting for India).

Adopt an athlete

Alternatively, we tell the stories of the people who will suffer the most if you turn away from the CWG: The innocent sportsmen. This will include TV campaigns that will be made like mini-documentaries of a few sportsmen who come from really humble beginnings and have struggled against impossible odds to become great at their sport. The thought being, 'Support our athletes. Support the Games.' On the web we will have a 'Adopt an Athlete' campaign, where people can choose an athlete they want to support, buy merchandise that feature her, keep track of her progress, interact with her, etc.

Oops! We made a mistake

Rahul Ghosh

Group creative director, TBWA

Considering the mess our CWG officials have gotten our nation into, I think the most important value that we as a nation need to communicate to the world is honesty. We need to come clean. And to do that we need to look beyond a conventional 'fluff' advertising campaign. First, let us tell the world that we accept the wrongs and what we are doing to right them. Phase one would involve a series of press ads documenting the wrongs and steps taken to right them.

Second, give a day-by-day progress report. This will involve a multimedia campaign. Common people will be recruited who will volunteer to join a people's organising committee as overseers and experts. They would oversee the organizing process and act as watchdogs. In that way the communication will be a mass co-opt exercise where we will make interested Indians part of the Games.

Playing the patriot

KV Sridhar

National creative director,

Leo Burnett

Enjoy the Games

The strategy will be to divert the entire attention by focusing on the Games. The campaign would talk about the spirit of the Games. India's performance at Commonwealth Games has been good. For the past eight years it has been ranked at number 4. Therefore, the campaign would focus on India's performance at CWG and the tagline should be 'Enjoy the Games'. One can make television commercials on this by talking to players who represented India at the CWG in the past. Highlight these heroes because this is not cricket and rarely does one know the names of these players or even the format of various games. Films could be also made on the happiest moments at CWG or any nail-biting finishes. One can look at making 15-20 second films on these concepts. Then one can sell the idea of airing these films to the direct-to-home (DTH) operators, cable operators, restaurants, movie theatres. All this is possible with digital distribution. One can also make short 5-10 minute films which highlight the greatest moments for India at previous CWG and air them at movie theatres during the interval.

Hum Honge Kamiyaab

The second strategy could be weaved around patriotism. We uphold the pride of what we did in the past. The time has come to bury controversies of the past and look towards the future. Therefore, the entire campaign should be designed around arousing patriotism. The tagline could be 'Hum Honge Kamiyaab' (We will be successful) which will uphold the idea 'CWG desh ke liye'. Communications could be built around the idea --do it for the country. There could be a couple of ways one could execute this. One is make films highlighting the great moments that has accelerated India's growth as a nation. From industrial growth to scientific milestones to evolving socio-economic classes highlighting the fact that we are trying to be number one in every sphere of life. Therefore, can India be number one at CWG this year? One can also make videos by using AR Rehman's 'Jai Ho' song and show India's achievements. Therefore, the focus will be to be number one in Asia and look forward to a great run at the Olympics. And one can ask former players, actors, key personalities like the President or the prime minister of India to endorse this campaign and make them say 'Hum honge kamiyaab'. The strategy will be to work on the emotions of people. There should be a 360-degree approach to this campaign. One can release the films on television, DTH, cable, theatres, online sites. One can create a campaign around this theme on websites like Orkut, Facebook, Twitter. Sports magazines should play an important role along with national and vernacular dailies in promoting this campaign. One can also tie up with Indian Railways and a few airlines to take this idea forward.

Do it for GenNext

The third strategy could be this--forget everyone else and talk to the children of India. The tagline could be 'Do it for the next generation. Do it for your kids'. This will not be a conventional ad campaign. One can tie up with kids' products which would take the campaign forward. One can tie up with companies like Cadbury or Perfetti and they would design the campaign. The campaign would say children are the hope of the future and it is important to encourage them so that they are motivated to go on and win at the Olympics. The campaigns would encourage children towards sports. Then kids channels such as Disney, Cartoon Network, Pogo, Nickelodeon could be brought on board and they would in turn promote these campaigns. The campaigns should make adults feel ashamed of the ongoing controversies. Therefore, the aim would be motivate children. And if we want to make India a super power in sports then we need to talk to children.

Get the states to pitch in

Prasanna Sankhe

National creative director,

Publicis Ambience

As a citizen of India, frustrated and embarrassed over the blatant corruption and mismanagement happening at the CWG 2010, I was relieved when FE at least gave me a forum to put forth my point of view on how we could correct the damage.

As I see it, there are two problems to the whole CWG issue. One is regarding the event venue?their completion(or rather incompletion). Second, for the venues that have been completed on time, it's their quality. For the first problem, the solution is to find alternatives instead of trying to meet these impossible deadlines. There are world-class facilities that are ready and hardly ever utilized (like the Balewadi Sports complex near Pune which has an excellent track and field stadium and a superb swimming centre), which should be pressed into service. Different disciplines of the CWG should be given to different states according to the facilities that they already have. So Haryana can get boxing/ wrestling because the infrastructure there is suited to that discipline. Chennai can host the tennis matches as it already hosts an ATP standard event. Similarly, athletics can be held in Kerala which produces our best sprinters and has very good facilities.

Now I know that the CWG is normally awarded to a city not a country, but given the national disaster and embarrassment that we are facing it's only prudent for all the states to pitch in. First, the entire media attention will die down. The focus will come back from completing the stadiums to actually having the best Games. The second and more important benefit is that the whole nation will then feel like it is contributing towards making the CWG successful.

With this one move, all the criticism aimed at Delhi should recede and people will take up CWG to contribute to its success rather than waste their time criticizing. Once the venues are distributed across the country, we should call star athletes such as Stephanie Rice, Asafa Powell and Taufiq Hidayat to visit the venues in these different cities. The main objective being to reassure them that the quality of these stadiums is world-class. It will also convey the message that the athletes are at the centre of our thought process. These star athletes have large fan followings so it's easy to request them to tweet about their stadium inspection and their satisfaction thereafter. We could also upload viral videos. All the electronic media which has only been following corruption charges can now accompany these international stars around the country and spread the positive aspects of CWG instead of reporting only the negative ones.

I think the enormity of the event and the mess that we've landed up in is so huge that advertising alone is not going to solve anything. Given that our national pride is at stake, concrete steps will have to be taken which are completely out-of-the-box. That, as a creative/strategic thinker, and more importantly as a citizen of India, is my recommendation.

Celebrate the spirit of the Games

Minakshi Achan

National creative director,

Rediffusion Y&R

It don't think any damage has happened to the Commonwealth Games. However, what has happened is damage to our country's image. Now we need to adopt a two-pronged strategy. One for global audiences and two, for local audiences. We can't undo the dent in our image so easily but what we can do is change the conversation. Change the debate from corruption and infrastructure problems and all things undone to what the CWG stands for and clearly bring the focus back to the game. The CWG has been an opportunity to transform Delhi and is an opportunity to bring the city together to play host to the world. Indian hospitality can be showcased. The games are a few hours but the experience lasts a lifetime.

So Delhi, India get into the spirit of the game . The world, we are ready to play host.

For local audiences: We can inspire people by creating 'The Spirit of the Game' films which will evoke the Commonwealth spirit and get people into the mood for the games, creating the right atmosphere. There ought to be some activation ideas which involve the whole city, schools, colleges and workforce. Also, asking corporate India to get involved in a big way. Secondly, tell the real story - the games, the athletes, the trials and tribulations, the road to success. Infomercials can be made which will inspire the stories of the past heroes, both Indian and international, saluting their spirit. Invite Delhi and the rest of India to play host to the world. On ground communication where people step out in large numbers led by Shera, the mascot.

We should involve 'The Spirit of Delhi'. Get the populace excited. It's time to play the host, time to show the world what Indian hospitality really means. Volunteer, make it an event to remember for our guests

For global audiences: Let's enthuse the global audience. Tell them we're ready. Present the face of Indian hospitality - snippets of what to expect when they arrive in Delhi. This could be carried out in Delhi, Mumbai and international hub airports with kiosks that announce how India's ready for the world.

Explore and 'Discover Delhi' and maybe in the process discover India? Introduce the venue, the history, the culture. Give visitors a chance to truly discover Delhi, to make their trip one to truly remember - for the games, and beyond the games. We could also use this as an opportunity to promote visits to other landmark locations in India - the natural wonders in Kerala and Ladakh; and the cultural, in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh; and the architecture of the Southern temples. One can use live hoardings, Delhi city magazines, directories, postcards, etc., of sights to see.

We can set up kiosks and booths in the Commonwealth Village which will dispense literature about Delhi and India. We can also invite city volunteers as hosts and hostesses of the games. City tour buses could be organized with live tour guides and audio guides. At the end of the Games we want the world to be awestruck like the world was when China hosted the Beijing Olympics.

Huth strikes late to earn Stoke win over Villa

Tue, Sep 14 10 03:57 AM

Robert Huth scored with virtually the last kick of the match to earn Stoke City their first Premier League points of the season with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Monday.

New Villa manager Gerard Houllier was not in the ground and Stoke boss Tony Pulis also missed the first half following the death of his mother but he arrived in time to see Huth snatch a dramatic victory 10 minutes after Kenwyne Jones had equalised.

Villa, who missed the chance to go third in the table, deservedly led 1-0 at halftime courtesy of a stooping header by Stewart Downing after 35 minutes.

Stoke remained in the bottom three but their late fightback left West Ham United as the only team in the Premier League still to earn a point this season.

The arrival of Pulis to rapturous applause sparked a much-improved display by Stoke who could have leaked further goals late in the first half when Villa, still under the guidance of caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald, were rampant.

Villa still looked on course for the victory as the second half ebbed and flowed but they buckled in the closing stages.

Striker Jones, Stoke's record signing at 8 million pounds ($12.33 million) from Sunderland, equalised when he headed past Brad Friedel from Matthew Etherington's clipped cross.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Stoke were awarded a dubious free kick and debutant Jermaine Pennant swung in a cross which Etherington lashed into a crowded penalty area for Huth to stick out his leg and deflect the ball past Friedel.

Houllier, appointed last week to succeed Martin O'Neill who quit before the start of the season, has not yet completed his commitments in his previous job with the French Football Federation.

Injured Capirossi to miss Aragon GP

Suzuki MotoGP rider Loris Capirossi of Italy stretches before practice for the Indianapolis Grand Prix...

Tue, Sep 14 10 02:17 AM

Injured Suzuki rider Loris Capirossi will miss this weekend's Aragon MotoGP round, the Italian's team said on Monday.

Capirossi suffered a hand injury in a first lap collision with American Nicky Hayden at the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano on Sept. 5.

"The surgery to re-attach the tendon to his right-hand little finger is healing well but, on the advice of his surgeon, he must keep it immobilised for at least another week in order to avoid damaging the repair," Suzuki said on their website (www.rizla-suzuki-motogp.co.uk)

Spaniard Alvaro Bautista will be the team's sole rider.

"I am still feeling a bit of pain and I'm going to the hospital every day to have the wound cleaned and dressed, so although I could possibly be able to ride I wouldn't be fit enough and it might jeopardise my attendance and competitiveness at Motegi (the Japanese GP on Oct 3) if I did," said Capirossi.

The veteran is 15th in the standings.

The Aragon round, 13th of the championship, will be the third race of the season held in Spain and was drafted in as a late replacement for the cancelled Hungarian GP.

We started slowly and failed to execute plans: Hussey

Tue, Sep 14 10 01:27 AM

Port Elizabeth, Sep 13 (PTI) Victoria skipper David Hussey said a slow start and failure to execute their plans cost them their match against Warriors in the Champions League twenty20 tournament here today. "We started slow, didn''t we? We need to regroup and play our a game in Jo''burg. We didn''t execute our skills well, but full credit to Warriors," David Hussey said after his team suffered a 28-run defeat to Warriors. His counterpart and Man-of-the-match Davey Jacobs said 159 was always a difficult target to achieve and his bowlers backed him well. "We are very happy with the win. We always knew anything around 160 would be a difficult target but still we needed to bowl a few good overs and we just did that. Crowd is always with the band, so it''s fun. I am sure there will be a big crowd in on Saturday," he said. Jacobs took two stunning catch to contribute to his win, apart from scoring a 39-ball 59. Asked which one was better between the two catches, Jacobs said, "Yeah, the second catch was a bit of a TV thing, the first one was better." PTI ATK

Jacobs guides Warriors to an emphatic win over Victoria

Tue, Sep 14 10 01:07 AM

Port Elizabeth, Sep 13 (PTI) Captain David Jacobs led from the front with a breezy fifty as Warriors registered a comprehensive 28-run victory over Victoria in their second Champions League twenty20 match here today. Jacobs blasted a 39-ball 59 bejeweled with nine fours and a six and also pulled off two stunning catches to help Warriors notch up their second win in the tournament. Electing to bat, Jacobs gave Warriors a solid start but they suffered a mini-collapse before Mark Boucher (31) and Johan Botha (20) helped the team manage a competitive 158 at the St George''s Park here. The Warriors then returned to restrict Victoria to 130 for nine, courtesy some wonderful bowling by Juan Rusty Theron and Makhaya Ntini, who captured three and two wickets respectively. Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Nicky Boje, Johan Botha and Justin Kreusch also scalped one wicket each to contribute to the win. Chasing 159 to win, Victoria had a shaky start as they lost opener Rob Quiney (1) in the third over after his short-arm pull off Makhaya Ntini found Justin Kreusch at deep square leg. Ntini struck again in his second over to remove Brad Hodge (16) with Jacobs pulling off a stunning catch at mid-on to leave Victoria at 20 for two in 4.1 overs. Skipper David Hussey (29), who almost ran himself out in the fifth over, and Aaron Finch (25) then tried to stem the rot with a 29-ball 39 runs third wicket partnership as Victoria reached 50 runs in 8.1 overs. Just when the partnership was looking to blossom, Nicky Boje dismissed Finch with Jacobs taking another mesmerising catch to reduce Victoria to 59 for three. Hussey and Andrew McDonald then added 35 runs in 30 balls but both fell in consecutive balls, spread over two overs, as Victoria lost half their side in 14.1 overs. Two balls later, Matthew Wade dragged a Juan Rusty Theron delivery onto his off stump, while in the next over Tsotsobe cleaned up Glenn Maxwell (2). Theron then claimed his third wicket, disturbing Clint McKay''s woods, while Johan Botha got rid off John Hastings in the 18th over as Warriors inched closer to victory. Earlier electing to bat, skipper Jacobs cracked a breezy half-century at the top but Warriors suffered a mini-collapse to waste the advantage. But a 28-ball 40 runs fifth wicket stand between Boucher and Botha helped Warriors cross the 150-mark. For Victoria, Andrew McDonald was the peak of the bowlers, scalping two wickets, while Dirk Nannes, Clint McKay and Shane Harwood took one each. .

Rodriguez takes fragile hold on Tour of Spain

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 12:21 AM

Local rider Joaquim Rodriguez took the overall lead in the Tour of Spain after the race's toughest stage on Monday, but with only five days left the final result is far from decided.

Rodriguez's compatriot Mikel Nieve won the 16th stage, the third for his Euskaltel-Euskadi squad in this year's tour.

Rodriguez powered out of a tiny pack of favourites with less than a kilometre to go to the sundrenched summit of Cotobello at the climax of the 181 km stage in the Asturian mountains, regaining the lead he held for one day earlier in the tour.

Fourth in this stage, the Katusha rider is 33 seconds ahead of Italy's Vincenzo Nibali, with Ezequiel Mosquera of Spain 53 seconds back, signalling a tough contest over the next five days.

Stage winner Nieve dedicated the first victory of his career to one of the race's previous leaders, his team-mate Igor Anton who crashed badly and dropped out on Saturday.

"Igor would have won overall for sure and when he quit like that it felt like our world had caved in," Nieve said.

The Tour of Spain finishes on Sept. 19th in Madrid.

Middlesbrough trip to North Korea revives 1966 memories

Published>Tue, Sep 14 10 12:17 AM

The unlikely sporting link between English town Middlesbrough and North Korea will be renewed this week when a team of women footballers head off into the unknown for a week-long visit.

Middlesbrough Ladies have been invited to play two matches in Pyongyang against local club sides with team manager Marrie Wieczorek expecting her players to make a bigger stir there than they do back home on England's north-east coast.

"At home we get crowds of 30 or 40, and they're all family, but from what I've heard we could be playing in a stadium that holds 35,000. Pride is a huge thing in North Korea and I expect that my girls will be playing in front of more fans than they would have ever experienced before," Wieczorek told Reuters.

"I'm sure they will treat our visit as a showcase occasion to the outside world. It's going to be a culture shock for the girls. I imagine that their pride in their country means they will be really up for our visit and trying hard to win.

North Korea and Middlesbrough have been inexorably linked since 1966 when the North Koreans famously beat Italy during the World Cup finals at the club's former Ayresome Park stadium.

"You don't hear much about Middlesbrough in this country. But in North Korea it's linked with one of their greatest sporting moments," said Wieczorek.

"I think it's the only reason we are being invited into the country because of our links with North Korea. I've heard from the British Embassy that the people in the North Korea Ministry of Sport speak very warmly of Middlesbrough."

While in Pyongyang Middlesbrough's players, aged between 17 and 25, and coaching staff will meet the surviving members of the 1966 squad, including Pak Do Ik, the scorer of the winning goal against Italy. They will also coach schoolchildren.

"Everyone is so excited about the trip. It's such a fantastic opportunity for all of us to visit a country that we could never have imagined getting to see.

"I know North Korea is shrouded in mystery for many people in the UK, but I get the impression that the Koreans will be wonderful hosts."

A few local rules will have to be obeyed though.

"When we told the girls that their mobile phones will be confiscated their jaws dropped," Wieczorek said.

Inter cut Champions League prize money gap - report

Published>Mon, Sep 13 10 11:57 PM

Champions League holders Inter Milan closed their gap with dominant English soccer clubs as the biggest money prize earners in the last seven Champions League seasons, a study showed on Monday.

In a report released exclusively to Reuters outside Italy, sports business consultancy group StageUp estimated European soccer's governing body UEFA distributed 746.4 million euros ($954.9 million) to the 32 clubs competing in the world's most lucrative club soccer tournament last season.

Treble winners Inter Milan jumped to the fourth place from eighth, with a total of 174.5 million euros earned in seven competitions. English Premier League's Arsenal were third.

Last season's runners-up Bayern Munich climbed two spots to seventh in the ranking, with 165.8 million euros earned in six competitions.

Manchester United, who lost to Bayern Munich in the semi-finals last year, overtook Chelsea at the top, with 216 million euros.

Barcelona, who were denied a second straight win when they lost out in last season's semi-finals to Jose Mourinho's Inter, were sixth, behind French club Olympique Lyon who have played one competition more.

UEFA has distributed 3.7 billion euros to 79 clubs competing over the last seven years, according to StageUp estimates.

Approximately half of the Champions League's total prize money is distributed on the basis of television market share, while the other half is awarded as fixed sums on results.

Clubs earn extra money from ticket sales and merchandise.

Young Boys defender Dudar emerges from induced coma

BSC Young Boys (YB) Emiliano Dudar reacts after scoring against FC Luzern during their Swiss...

Mon, Sep 13 10 11:37 PM

Young Boys defender Emiliano Dudar came out of an induced coma on Monday after an ugly clash of heads during a Swiss league match the previous day amid controversy over whether the match should have continued.

Team doctor Cuno Wetzel told Swiss television that the Argentine, whose condition was stable, had suffered a severe concussion and broken nose after colliding with team mate Francois Affolter during the 2-2 draw against FC Basel.

"It's difficult to say how long the recovery will take, usually this type of injury needs several weeks," said Wetzel.

"The Argentine is on the road to recovery," added the club's web site (www.bscyb.ch).

The incident interrupted the first half of the Swiss Super League match for eight minutes and the media on Monday were critical of the decision to resume play.

"We've seen that there are more important things than just victory or defeat," said FC Basel striker Marco Streller.

Basel coach Thorsten Fink added: "The result is secondary. The important thing is that Dudar gets better."

Young Boys were leading 2-0 but the Swiss champions, who visit Cluj in a Champions League tie on Wednesday, hit back, barely celebrating their goals.

Dudar's journeyman career has been typical of many lesser-known South American players and far from the glamour enjoyed by the big names.

After four years with Velez Sarsfield in his homeland, he has since played league football in Venezuela, Paraguay and Brazil. He joined Young Boys in 2009, having moved to Switzerland the year before to join FC Chiasso.

Mon, Sep 13 10 11:27 PM

New Delhi, Sep 13 (PTI) In yet another bid to showcase its preparedness for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, the Organising Committee today took the mediapersons on a guided tour of Jawaharlal Nehru stadium complex, the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the October 3-14 megaevent. The visit was part of OC''s two-day media trip of different venues to build up a positive image in the eyes of the ''ever-critical'' journalists with just three weeks to go for the start of the Games. Yesterday, four out of the 11 competition venues -- Talkatora Indoor stadium (boxing), Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Complex, Thyagaraj Sports Complex (netball) and Siri Fort Sports Complex (badminton and squash) were visited by mediapersons. "Lawn Ball venue inside the complex is world class. It is evident from the quality of the turf laid down by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). Players will definitely get the home advantage," OC secretary general Lalit Bhanot told reporters during the media visit. "JLN stadium is getting ready for the opening ceremony. Aerostat ballon will give the audience an amazing lighting experience. We are ready to deliver world class Games," he added. On the occasion, OC vice chairman Randhir Singh said, "Everyone has worked hard to overcome problems, caused mostly by the monsoon, but now the time has come to look at the positives. The facilities are world class and we need to showcase them through media." PTI SHN SSC

Button and Hamilton brace for final five

McLaren Formula One drivers Lewis Hamilton (L) of Britain and Jenson Button of Britain talk...

Published>Mon, Sep 13 10 11:17 PM

One Formula One driver's merry-go-round is another's roller-coaster, at least for McLaren's world champions Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.

Button felt he had stepped back on board the former with second place at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday while Hamilton, winner of the previous race in Belgium, plunged where he had hoped to soar after retiring on the first lap.

"Lewis's career has often been a rollercoaster. He is a dynamic and exciting driver," said McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh.

"He and us are disappointed but he is massively resilient and I'm sure he will bounce back in Singapore. He won there last year and he'll be trying to win this year."

Both remain firmly in contention, even if Hamilton ceded the overall lead to Red Bull's Mark Webber, as the championship boils down to five drivers fighting an epic battle over the five remaining races with five points between the top two.

"Every race we go to now people are going to be looking at qualifying, the end result of the race and trying to understand which direction it's going to go," Button told Reuters.

"It's like a merry-go-round at the moment, and we're all stepping off and stepping back on," added the Briton, who drew a blank at Spa when he was shunted out by Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel.

"It's pretty complicated, exciting, good for the sport.

"We're all out there to win this championship, but the people who don't win it are going to get a lot of respect this year for being part of that challenge -- hopefully I won't be one of them," added the 30-year-old.

"People will sit down and think 'Wow, those guys really fought it out to the end,' and that's going to be exciting."

MORE AGGRESSIVE

Button finds himself in a very different position to last year, when he won six of the first seven races with Brawn and clung on to take the championship.

Last season he would not have been able to fight back had anyone been able to overtake him in the standings but this year is very different.

"I've a very competitive car and the next race will be more tricky for us, but still I'm behind a bit, attacking and it's exciting," said Button.

"I'm not going to sit back and hope for a good result or try and be consistent. I did that over the second half of last year and mentally it's very tough.

"But when you're behind and you're chasing and you have a good car, you can be more aggressive, and for me every race I go into I have to be aggressive. I can't sit back and hope to get good points."

While Hamilton left Monza kicking himself at his mistake, his relaxed team mate could only sympathise while enjoying his own good fortune.

"I don't feel like I'm under any pressure at all, it's quite weird," said Button. "I'm just going to every race enjoying it.

"I still wake at nights when I'm not racing feeling frustrated when I've not had a good race. I'm thinking about racing a lot, which is annoying because sometimes you need to get away from it.

"But I feel a lot more relaxed (than last year)...and if the end result is as good as I hope it is then it will be amazing."

HC to continue hearing on Modi petition on Tuesday

Published>Mon, Sep 13 10 10:23 PM

The Bombay High Court will continue tomorrow its hearing on the petition filed by suspended IPL chief Lalit Modi seeking reconstitution of BCCI disciplinary committee which is probing allegations of his financial wrongdoings in the conduct of the Twenty20 League.

A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud heard the matter today before posting for further hearing tomorrow.

Modi's lawyer Ram Jethmalani said one of the main charges against his client was that the facilitation fee, which MSM Satellite (Sony) paid to World Sports Group (Mauritius) for IPL media rights before 2010 season, was in fact a "kickback".

Jethmalani argued that his client actually enriched the coffers of the Cricket Board when he struck the new deals for media rights.

This deal was justified, because WSG (M) was holding the media rights, Jethmalani said.

In a 2008 deal, Sony had agreed to pay USD 916 million to BCCI, but in the new contract it agreed to pay USD 1.96 billion to the cricket body, he said.

"I (Modi) increased their coffers by more than double," the senior advocate said.

He further said BCCI President Shashank Manohar did an "admirable thing" by pulling out of the disciplinary committee, and existing two members, Arun Jaitley and Chirayu Amin (interim IPL Chairman) "should follow his lead".

"These two gentlemen were part of the general body which decided that USD 80 million which Sony paid to WSG was really a kickback" and hence they must not be a part of the disciplinary panel," Jethmalani submitted.

Modi had filed a petition on the same grounds in July, but then another bench of the High Court had said he should raise the issue before the BCCI disciplinary committee itself, and if it decided against him, he may move the court.

On August 11, the disciplinary committee held that the two members -- Amin and Jaitley -- need not pull out of the panel.

Without 7 senior players, Namibia confident against India

Mon, Sep 13 10 09:27 PM

New Delhi, Sep 13 (PTI) Namibia are here without at least half a dozen first team players for Wednesday''s international football friendly against India but their coach Tom Saintfiet reckons his side would be tough to beat. The ''Brave Warriors'' have left out seven foreign-based players and most of the squad have not played for four months since their domestic league had a break. "We have left out three players who play in South African league, one is playing in Angola and three are in Europe. They are not with us here. But we are looking forward to Wednesday''s match. India have qualified for AFC Asian Cup, so it will be a tough match," Saintfiet said. Since September 15 is not a FIFA match day, foreign clubs are not obligatory to release players for their national duty. "We don''t have much match practice as most of the players have not played after the league had a break four months ago. So we are happy to have come here and play an international friendly," said the Belgian after his side''s training session here. Namibia, who are ranked 115th in FIFA charts as against 138th of India, have played three international matches so far this year. They drew with South Africa 1-1 in March, played out a goal-less draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina before losing to Gambia 1-3 in the African Cup qualifiers early this month. Namibian Squad: Goalkeepers: Athiel Mbaha, Virgill Vries, Maximillian Mbaeva Defenders: Nelson Geingob, George Hummel, Jamunovandu Ngatjizeko, Richard Gariseb, Hartman Toromba, Steven Goagab Midfielders: Michael Piennar, Ninja Karongee, Quinton Jacobs, Gotlieb Nakuta, Edward Asino, Eslin Kamahunga Strikers: Heinrich Isaacks, Rudi Louw, Jerome Louis, Alfred Ndyenge, Roger Katijitjeo.

Bopanna, Somdev all set for Davis Cup tie against Brazil

Published>Mon, Sep 13 10 09:17 PM

Chennai, Sep 13 (IANS) Apparently making the final of the US Open doubles last week in New York City has rocketed Rohan Bopanna's confidence to another level and his eagerness to carry the momentum into this weekend's Davis Cup playoff tie against Brazil here was palpable.

Within hours of flying halfway across the world, Bopanna was on the outside courts of the SDAT Stadium here, knocking the ball and riding on his newfound status as the World No.19 in doubles and ranked sixth as a team with his long-time tour partner Aisam-ul Haq Quershi of Pakistan.

'My confidence is high. I got on to the court today itself after a long travel from New York and I was able to hit the ball really good.

'These four days of training before the Davis Cup tie are important and crucial. I will be working on my movements. Looking towards that, I am happy that I am really hitting the ball well and playing well.

'I have to believe in my game and try and win my singles match on Friday,' said the 30-year old Bangalorean at a media conference this afternoon.

Of course, in singles, Bopanna has few pretensions as a force to reckon with. He is currently ranked 479, well below the likes of Somdev Devvarman (113) and Prakash Amritraj (341). For all that, he has several notable singles victories in Davis Cup.

However, Bopanna preferred to focus on the tie rather than rankings and hoped that he would get used to the conditions here, especially the hard court that he said was a tad slower than the one he played on at the US Open.

'We are going to workout together to make sure we can take it from here and save as much energy as possible because the humidity factor is very high here. I am sure, I should be fine physically.

'I have been seeing Brazilian players every week on the circuit. Thomaz Bellucci and Ricardo Mello are really good and left handed players. It will be as tough tie for us, but it is great to have a home tie after a gap of two years and first time on the hard court.

'Coming from the US Open, I feel the court here is little bit on the slower side. Obviously, it will be a day or two for me to get used to this court, but with the four days practice, I should be fine,' he said.

On his part, Somdev hoped to win the tie and qualify for the World Group, but admitted that the task was challenging given the fact that the Brazilian singles players are higher ranked.

'Rohan and I have been really doing well. We have come out here five days ahead to get ready for the tie. It is a good chance for us to get back to World Group by winning against the Brazilians,' he said.

Both team coach Nandan Bal and non-playing captain Shiv Prakash Mishra stressed on the obvious, saying that the tie could run close while hoping that the weather conditions and crowd support could swing the fortunes India's way.

'We are facing two left handed Brazilian singles players who are tough on clay and not too sure whether they are good on hard courts.

'We are hoping for the weather to heat up little more and obviously the crowd support. It is going to be a good tie. Our boys are capable enough to put things together and we should be home.

'If we are at least 1-1 on the first day, we are going to be in good shape for winning the tie. The Brazilians work as a team back home. Most of the countries are considered as scratch teams as they pull together four players for Davis Cup matches, but the Brazilians work as a team right through the year,' Bal pointed out.

The coach opined that Bopanna's performance could prove critical from India's perspective.

'Our players have always performed well in Davis Cup, much better than what their rankings suggest. Rohan's performance, in particular, has been spectacular this season in Davis Cup. We are looking to him to pull out the matches in our favour,' Bal said.

Mishra agreed, saying: 'It is a tough tie, but we have the advantage of playing at home and the weather is going to suit us much more. If Rohan Bopanna could give us a good start like he did in South Africa and Russia, it is going to be a positive result for us.'

He felt that winning the two opening singles on Friday would be a huge boost for India who will then go into Saturday's doubles match with Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi in harness.
