Afridi to quit Test captaincy after second test against Australia

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 11:17 PM

London, Jul 16 (ANI): Pakistan's new captain Shahid Afridi today said that he will quit the captaincy of the test team after the second test against Australia.

Afridi made the announcement on Friday minutes after his side lost the first test by 150 runs at Lord's.

"It is a board decision but I would think Salman Butt is the best man for the job now," Afridi told BBC Radio.

"I have a bit of an injury and I would rather focus on one-day and Twenty20 cricket."

The batsman, out slogging for two on Friday, said he no longer had the temperament for the five-day game after what was his first Test in four years, the Dawn reports. (ANI)

PCB accepts Afridi''s resignation

Fri, Jul 16 10 11:07 PM

Karachi, Jul 16 (PTI) The Pakistan Cricket Board today accepted the resignation of Shahid Afridi as captain of the Test team but said his deputy Salman Butt was not an automatic choice to take over for the rest of the five-day matches during the tour of England. Afridi''s decision to retire as the Test captain means Pakistan cricket has seen four Test captain change since early 2009, when Shoaib Malik was removed after a home series defeat to Sri Lanka. "I have accepted the resignation of Afridi as Test captain but he would continue to lead the team in one-dayers and T20 internationals," PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt said from London. "We had appointed Afridi as captain for all three formats of the game for the tour to England, but if he is not comfortable now playing the longer version of the game we can''t force him to carry on as Test captain," Butt added. The PCB Chairman said Afridi''s decision had come as a surprise and the Board would now meet in next few days to decide who will captain the Test team for the rest of the England tour. "Salman Butt is not the automatic choice despite being vice-captain as it is the discretion of the Board to decide who should lead the Test team," Butt said. However, he declined to comment on media reports that he had asked former captain Muhammad Yousuf to come out of retirement and join the team in England for the series against England. "I will not comment on that issue but we still have a lot of cricket to play and we need to re-group quickly. Afridi will continue to lead the team in the ODIs and T20 matches," he said. Afridi today announced his decision after Pakistan''s humiliating 150-run defeat at the hands of Australia in the first Test in Lord''s. Meanwhile, sources said that the Board is also considering recalling former captain Younis Khan for the Test series and the chances of either Younis or Yousuf being asked to take over as Test captain cannot be ruled out. "The experiment with new players in the first Test backfired and Afridi''s retirement has forced the Board to rethink their strategy," one source said. Both Younis and Yousuf were not considered for the England tour although Younis was available after a ban was lifted from him in June.

Woods'' mistress to appear on reality show: Report

Fri, Jul 16 10 10:27 PM

Betwa Sharma New York, Jul 16 (PTI) Rachel Uchitel, a mistress of Tiger Woods, has been invited to appear on the next season of "The Celebrity Apprentice" by television producer Donald Trump, according to celebrity news website TMZ. Trump, also the show''s host, told TMZ that he personally called Uchitel three weeks ago and offered her a spot on the show, telling her she would be "awesome." Uchitel told TMZ she was "absolutely" taking the offer. Rachel Uchitel came into the spotlight after details of the extramarital affairs Tiger Woods had with dozens of women became public last year. Shocking details of his private life received worldwide attention with several of the golfer''s mistresses coming forward to provide information about his infidelity. The cover-up was busted after his wife Elin found out about his extramarital affair with Uchitel, a New York party planner, which led to an argument on Nov 27 because of which Woods crashed his SUV outside his Florida mansion sustaining minor injuries. The golfer has apologized for his behavior. He spent 45 days in rehab for sex-addiction and has spoken of continuing his treatment. After the sex scandal broke, Woods took a five month break before entering the Masters in April. NBC, the channel on which the show is telecast, has the final say on whether Uchitel will be on the show, but Donald usually gets his way, TMZ said.

Afridi announces Test retirement

Fri, Jul 16 10 10:23 PM

London, Jul 16 (PTI) Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi today announced that he would retire from the Test cricket after his team''s second five-dayer against Australia because he doesn''t consider himself fit for the longer version of the game. Afridi, who announced his decision after Pakistan''s humiliating 150-run defeat at the hands of Australia in the first Test in Lord''s, also revealed that he made up his mind only after being dismissed cheaply by part-time off-spinner Marcus North in the second innings of the match. Asked at the post match press conference when he decided to quit the Test cricket, Afridi replied, "When I got out." Afridi, who made two runs during Pakistan''s chase of 440, went to slog just the fourth ball he faced and fell prey to North. "I''ve not been fully fit with a side strain and so I will not play Test cricket after the match in Leeds," Afridi said. "The Pakistan Cricket Board asked me to play Test cricket, I wasn''t thinking about it. I did the wrong thing. I think my temperament is not good enough for Test cricket and I am struggling with a side injury. I think maybe the next Test will be my last," Afridi said after the match. Afridi also admitted that it was not an ideal shot on his part at that crucial moment of the match. "The captain should be an example for the youngsters but that was not an example. I was in two minds whether to play my natural game or whether to take my time. You can say I was weak mentally...I''m not good enough for Test cricket," Afridi said. The second match starts at Headingley from July 21. His decision means a new captain will be in place when Pakistan take on England in the four-Test series starting on July 29. Afridi also said that opening batsman Salman Butt may take over as the captain of Pakistan. "Salman is showing his maturity. He''s good enough to take over this team as captain." .

Rossi back up to speed in stunning MotoGP comeback

Yamaha MotoGP rider Valentino Rossi speaks to the media after his testing session at Brno...

Fri, Jul 16 10 10:17 PM

MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi made a stunning comeback six weeks after breaking his leg with the seventh fastest time in German Grand Prix practice on Friday.

The 31-year-old Italian, who has missed four races since the injury last month, lapped the twisty Sachsenring circuit only a fraction of a second slower than Yamaha team mate and championship leader Jorge Lorenzo.

Spain's Dani Pedrosa, who has always been quick at the eastern German circuit, was fastest for Honda in one minute 22.521 seconds, ahead of Casey Stoner on a Ducati and the Australian's American team mate Nicky Hayden.

Lorenzo was sixth fastest with a best time of 1:23.224 compared to Rossi's 1:23.244, with the returning Italian among the top four fastest for most of the session run in temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius.

"Once again Valentino has surprised everyone," said team boss Davide Brivio. "From a team point of view it was like he had never been away, working on the suspension and searching for the best set up.

"His physical condition isn't too bad, a bit more difficult in the right-hand corners and okay on the left, but overall it is a lot better than we expected."

Rossi, who was told by specialists in June that he could expect to be out for four to five months after fracturing his right shin and fibula, was delighted with his astonishing return to two wheels.

"I am a lot more agile on the bike than I was in the tests," he said, applying ice to his injured leg after the session.

"I feel good and this track is helping me because a lot of it turns to the left," added the Italian, whose injury at his home grand prix at Mugello ended a record run of 230 successive starts.

"I am feeling quite confident on the bike and also my shoulder is good and not giving me problems. Now I have some pain in the leg and ankle but it's not too bad.

"We will have to wait until tomorrow morning to see how the leg is and whether it has swelled overnight or developed any problems," said the nine-times world champion, who has slipped to seventh place in the standings.

Santosh Trophy: Punjab, Manipur score big wins

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 09:57 PM

Kolkata, July 16 (IANS) There were goals galore on the second day of the 64th Santosh Trophy interstate national football championship as former champions Manipur pummeled Rajasthan 13-0 while Punjab spanked Pondicherry 7-0 in cluster matches Friday.

The other game saw Nagaland storm past Gujarat 4-0 to cap a day of one-sided results.

In cluster III, former title holders Punjab opened up a 2-0 margin at the breather, but played blitz football towards the later stages to eke out a big win before a sizeable crowd at the Khardah stadium.

Balwant Singh put the north Indian giants ahead in the 29th minute, while Ravinder Singh doubled the lead two minutes later.

Punjab went all out in the second session and Balwant scored his second goal in the 48th minute.

Pondicherry tried to make a comeback for some time carrying out a couple of attacks with neat passes into the opponent territory but failed to make any dent in the results.

Punjab struck three more within a span of five minutes as Balraj Singh (66th), Rohit Kumar (70th) and Praveen Kumar (71st) found the mark to make the scoreline 6-0.

Randeep Singh completed Pondicherry's misery by finding the target two minutes from the final whistle.

In another match of the same cluster, Nagaland and Gujarat played out a goalless first half before Nagaland stepped up gear post breather striking four goals.

Sakutemje found the net twice while Deilierio and Tiafumet scored one apiece at the Howrah stadium.

The cluster IV tie saw Manipur literally toy with the Rajasthan defence to open up a 8-0 lead at the halfway mark.

Bolstered by the presence of several players attached to various I-League sides, the nippy boys from the north-eastern state went on the offensive from the outset at the Barasat stadium.

R.Vashum (15, 18, 25, 44 & 64 minutes) led the scorer's tally with five goals, followed by Subhas Singh (12, 38, 58 & 67 minutes) with four. Charan Rai netted in the eighth and 28th minute of the opening session while Bisheshwor Singh (22) and Naila Kumar Singh (86) chipped in with one goal each.

Fri, Jul 16 10 09:37 PM

Kolkata, Jul 16 (PTI) Trevor James Morgan of England, a 56-year-old WEFA ''A'' license holder, will coach the former National League champions East Bengal this season. East Bengal club president Pranab Dasgupta informed media persons at the club tent today that Morgan, who acted as the development coach of Hul City during 2008-09, is expected to take charge of the red-and-yellow brigade towards end of this month. Dasgupta informed that Morgan also had a stint as a coach with West Ham and Black Burn of England. Under Morgan''s tutelage one of the clubs in Singapore also became soccer league champions. Asked who would assist Morgan, Dasgupta said, "at this moment Tushar Rakshit and Atanu Bhattachrajee are still there as assistant coach and football coach respectively." But whether they would continue in the same position would be "finalised after consultation with Morgan", he said. Comeback man Afridi to retire from Test cricket

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 09:23 PM

London, July 16 (IANS) Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, who made a comeback to Tests after four years for the series against Australia, made an unexpected announcement Friday to retire from Test cricket after the second Test against Australia at Headingley.

Afridi's abrupt decision to end his international Test career came after Pakistan lost to Australia by 150 runs in the first test at Lord's inside four days here Friday.

'I have struggled to adapt to this form of the game and the next Test will be my last. I would rather focus on one-day and Twenty20 cricket,' Afridi said.

'I am struggling with a thigh injury and I need to get myself right. I would think Salman Butt (vice-captain) is the best man for the job now.'

'I was not very keen to play Test cricket but the board asked me to see how I felt. My temperament is not good enough for Test cricket and we need a proper batsman or a proper bowler,' Afridi was quoted as saying in Sky Sports.

'I can't carry it in Test cricket where you need to be at full fitness. I'm enjoying one-day and Twenty20 so I'll concentrate on that. It's very difficult playing Tests after four years so it's better to leave this cricket.'

Afridi, who was playing his first Test in four years, was out for two in the second innings while Pakistan were chasing 440 for victory Friday. Afridi scored 31 in 15 balls in the first innings.

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis said it has been a tough time for Afridi.

'He was returning to Test cricket after four years. Its tough for him. There is also a bit of side strain on his left side. He thought its just not going his way. It's hard to pursue. He plays his cricket like that. He believes in himself,' Younis told Ten Sports.

'It is brave of him take the decision to return to Test cricket. When you are looking to make a comeback in Test cricket, it helps if things are easier.'

Tongue-twisting spotlight holders on Day 2 at St. Andrews

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 09:07 PM

St. Andrews (Scotland), July 16 (IANS) Two golfers with second names that put the spelling skills of golf writers to test held the spotlight Friday morning, when the wind and weather conditions were at their nastiest best at the St. Andrews.

Louis Oosthuizen, whose mention worthy achievement linked to a Major was the win at the par-3 contest preceding the main Championships at Augusta Masters this year, and Mark Calcavecchia, winner at the Open in 1989, and just past his 50th birthday, and, shot a creditable 67 each.

Oosthuizen held the lead at 12-under, while Calcavecchia was next best in the clubhouse at seven-under, a full five shots behind.

In between Rory McIlroy, nine-under overnight, had parred the first three holes before the conditions deteriorated to the extent that play had to be suspended due to winds exceeding 30 miles an hour even as the sun peeped from behind the clouds.

Youth may have its standard bearer in McIlroy, who set out only later in the afternoon when the wind picked up at St. Andrews on Friday, but carrying on the tradition of the 'Golden Oldies' making an early splash at the Open was the 1989 champion Calcavecchia.

The first to first to tee off this morning at 6.30am, Calcavecchia despite the grey weather found his moment in the sun with a round of 67 that ensured the 'Fifty-plus' gang still has a lot to talk about the Opens.

At the other end of the spectrum, McIlroy, at 21, is looking to become the youngest winner of The Open Championship since Willie Auchterlonie in 1893.

However it was not Calcavecchia, who held the lead, though he was second in the clubhouse at seven-under.

The lead passed into the hands of the South African Oosthuizen, who dislodged McIlroy for the first time since the latter's splendid charge on the back nine last night - five birdies in first six holes of the second stretch.

Calcavecchia, who has been in the first group in the morning in at least one of the rounds in last five British Opens said: 'The R&A is nice enough to know that I like to play fast and they certainly know I'm not going to hold anybody up. But that was the first time I actually hit it first. So yeah, that's pretty cool.'

Calcavecchia is following in the footsteps of the then 53-year-old Greg Norman, who held the spotlight at Birkdale in 2008 and then the then 59-year-old Tom Watson who almost won the Claret Jug before losing the play-off last year.

Oosty - thank god for the nicknames - birdied the 18th hole round off with a 67 after his first round 65 that set a decent clubhouse target at 12-under 132, which was three shot ahead of McIlroy.

Oosthuizen, who has made the cut only once in his previous eight Major appearances, grabbed the lead with three straight birdies beginning at the par-5 fifth hole. Another one at the tenth saw him at 11-under, but then he alternated between bogey and birdie from 11th to the 14th. A final birdie at No. 18 saw him finish at 12-under.

McIlroy, who comes on later in the afternoon knows that there is seldom anymore difficult than following a low round in a Major with another one, but he has done that on the PGA Tour at Quail Hollow, where he bounced from cutline to title on the weekend.

Back to Calcavecchia, he started the day at a modest two-under and went through a bogey-free five-under 67 that included two-under front nine in some pretty nasty weather.

Oosthuizen, widely considered an Ernie Els protege, endured highly unpredictable weather in the morning. He had seven birdies, including three in a row from the fifth, against two bogeys. The birdies came just when the rain started coming down.

Oosthuizen has not had much success in Majors - he missed cuts in seven of the previous eight appearances - but this year apart from his maiden European Tour win in Andalucia, he also won the par-3 competition, which precedes the Augusta Masters.

American Ricky Barnes, once seen as a contender to Tiger Woods, climbed a mountain with a four-under front nine and zoomed from four-under to eight-under. Then he came down on the other side of the mountain with a 39 that saw him finish the day at five-under with a 71.

England's Paul Casey battling a bad chest infection went through the front nine in 31 and then stayed there at eight-under till the 17th tee. A triple at 17th set him back badly, but he did make up one with a birdie on 18th to finish at six-under 138, the same as Lee Westwood (71), who had one birdie on the fifth and 17 pars.

Nayeemuddin appointed new Mohammedan Sporting coach

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 08:37 PM

Kolkata, July 16 (IANS) Former national football coach Sayeed Nayeemuddin was Friday appointed Mohammedan Sporting's coach for the 2010-11 season.

Nayeemuddin would spot players for the famed club from the ongoing Santosh Trophy inter-state tournament.

'I have been handed over a tentative list by the club officials. I will also watch the Santosh Trophy matches and spot talented players. Once the team is complete we will start our practice,' Nayeemuddin, a 'Dronacharya' awardee, told reporters here.

Known as a strict disciplinarian and a hard task-master, Nayeemuddin has found it difficult to gel with the current crop of leading Indian footballers, who have often voiced their displeasure over his rigid stance on matters like players sporting long hairs.

Nayeemuddin said he would try to bring back the old glory of the club, which won the then Calcutta League title five times in a row between 1934 and 1938.

The club played in the 2008-09 I-League, but was relegated.

Sporting also roped in the coal miners Emta Group of Companies as sponsor.

'We have signed a three-year contract with the club. We will pump in Rs.5 crore over the three-year period. In return, the club jersey will have Emta-Mohammedan written on it,' said Emta Group chairman-cum-managing director Ujjal Mukherkjee.

Murugappa Gold Cup hockey: Army, IOCL bag full points

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 08:07 PM

Chennai, July 16 (IANS) Defending champions Army XI had to stretch every sinew before posting a 4-2 win against Namdhari XI in their opening pool A fixture of the 86th All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament here Friday.

Later, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) came through 4-0 against local league champions Southern Railway to begin their pool B campaign on a winning note with goals by Ramachandra Raghunath (8th, 62nd), Deepak Thakur (41st) and Inderjeet Chadha (56th).

Namdhari certainly made Army XI, runners-up to IOCL in the CM's Cup in Bangalore recently, work hard for the victory that was in suspense until the very end.

The teams went into the break level at 2-2 as penalty corner specialst Harpreet Singh scored twice (3rd, 32nd) for Namdhari, including a penalty stroke conversion while Army XI replied through Reniel Singh (9th) and Sunil Ekka (28th).

On change of ends, Elizaer Lakra made it 3-2 for Army from open play in the 41st minute before SV Sunil struck the insurance goal (67th) even as Namdhari created and missed scoring chances.

Meanwhile, IOCL were rarely in trouble against Southern Railway whose line-up included several College students and obviously inexperienced at this level.

It was a rather disappointing encounter with IOCL, despite a profusion of India players, were rather below par while Southern Railway were barely visible in the attack as they spent more time defending.

IOCL were off to a good start when penalty corner specialist Raghunath, trying to work his way back into India squad, converted in the sixth minute, but failed with four other attempts, a couple of which were well blocked by goalkeeper MG Suresh.

Early in the second half, veteran Deepak Thakur found the boards from a goalmouth scramble with the Southern Railways vehemently protesting the goal, citing an infringement on part of the forward.

Incidentally, with 20 minutes on the clock, IOCL replaced their first choice goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan with Baljit Singh who is on a comeback trail after recovering from a serious eye injury a year back, but the substitute custodian was hardly tested.

In the last quarter, IOCL drew further away when Chadha flicked home from a penalty corner after receiving a pass from Prabhjot Singh and then Raghunath drag-flicked another for his second conversion of the match.

ICC finally adopts 'whereabouts' drug clause

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 07:27 PM

Dubai, July 16 (IANS) The International Cricket Council (ICC) finally adopted Friday a new 'whereabouts clause' that has the support of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The ICC said that the new rule will come into effect from Aug 1 and it has been agreed to by all members.

'The ICC whereabouts rules will strengthen our out-of-competition testing programme as we strive to ensure that cricket remains drug-free,' said ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat.

The rules, which implement the out-of-competition testing requirements under the ICC's Anti-Doping Code, establish a two-tier approach to whereabouts filing, with the establishment of an International Registered Testing Pool (IRTP) of players who will be required to submit their 'whereabouts' information in accordance with WADA's International Standard for Testing as well as a national player pool (NPP), for whom other 'cricket whereabouts' information will be provided.

'After a long and thorough process, we now have a tough and practical set of rules that will support our zero-tolerance approach to doping in our great sport. We know this is a complex area for players and administrators and I wish to thank all our Members for their willingness to find a workable solution,' Lorgat said.

'All of us are now satisfied that we have a code and rules that will support out-of-competition testing and protect international cricket from those who wish to cheat.

'Our next steps are to educate the relevant players and administrators so that they understand their responsibilities under the new rules followed by 'live' implementation shortly thereafter,' he added.

WADA Director General David Howman said: 'The World Anti-Doping Agency congratulates the International Cricket Council for agreeing its new 'whereabouts rules'. It is another sign from cricket's governing body that it is serious about protecting the integrity of the sport. It will mean that the ICC's out-of-competition testing programme, under which any player can be tested at any time, will now be strengthened and it is a good step forward for cricket.'

Brazil missed Ronaldinho, Adriano at World Cup: Branco

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 07:17 PM

Kolkata, July 16 (IANS) Former Brazilian football star Claudio Ibrahim Vaz Leal, popular as Branco, Friday said he would have included Ronaldinho in the World Cup squad.

'Had I been the Brazilian coach, I would have had Ronaldinho in the team,' Branco, a member of Brazil's 1994 World Cup champion team, told reporters here.

Dunga, who coached Brazil in the recently concluded World Cup, controversially left out Ronaldinho and Adriano.

Dunga was sacked after Brazil's exit at the quarter-final stage, losing to the Netherlands.

Branco, however, said besides Ronaldinho and Adriano, he would have taken Sao Paolo midfielder Anderson Hernanes and Santos's attacking midfielder Paulo Henrique Ganso.

Branco, in the city to take part in a soccer reality show, described Dunga as a 'very close friend.'

Branco recalled that he was called by the Brazilian Football Confederation president Ricardo Teixeira for discussion before appointing Dunga as the team coach four years back. 'We both agreed on Dunga's selection' said the left back, who wore the Brazilian colours in 72 international matches including 12 World Cup games spread over three editions.

Asked who should step into the hotseat now, the 46-year-old Branco said: 'It is very difficult to say. The current team does not have many players for the future. Only two of the players are young.

'The Brazilian Football Confederation has in mind names of 25-30 youngsters. The next coach should be one who is intelligent and capable of taking forward the responsibility.'

Branco, who had a glittering playing career from 1980 to 1995, would be in the city for 20 days as part of a 14-episode soccer talent hunt programme to be aired on the Bengali entertainment channel Mahua Bangla.

As part of the show, 46 talented youngsters have been spotted from various districts of West Bengal by leading Indian coach Subhas Bhowmick.

The recruits will be trained by the show's head coach Branco and the number will gradually be pruned to 15 after 14 days of gruelling training at the Sports Authority of India (Eastern Centre) Complex. The recruits will also get a rare opportunity of being mentored by Brazilian soccer legend Romario. 'He (Romario) will arrive here on July 18 and spend time with the kids on and off the field,' said a Mahua Bangla official.

On August 1, the chosen squad -- with Dipendu Biswas as captain -- will play against Mohun Bagan at the Salt Lake stadium.

Branco, on his first visit to India, said physical education and government support made a big difference between the quality of youngsters in his country and India. 'If these things can be improved, the level of football will go up here.'

Branco, a free-kick specialist, was candid enough to say that none of the recruits has impressed him. 'But I think they can be improved through training'.

Branco said he came from a poor family at Bage in southern Brazil and like most poor Brazilians dreamt of playing in the country's national colours.

'I always dreamt of playing football, of turning out in Brazilian jersey. Most of the Brazilian players come from poor and middle class families. I favour the process of cultivating or nursing the players.

'We will slowly notice quality in some players.'

"Thank you to Real Madrid for allowing me to realise a dream I have had since childhood," Leon said. "Hopefully, I can win many titles."

New Real coach Jose Mourinho oversaw his first training session on Friday with a depleted squad missing players who took part in the World Cup in South Africa.

The signing of Leon is part of an attempt by president Florentino Perez to bring more Spanish players into a first-team squad that has been dominated by foreigners in recent years.

Pargat will be contesting against interim president of Hockey India Vidaya Stokes, who was also the chief of the Indian Women''s Hockey Federation. "Yes, I will be contesting for the post of Hockey India president and I am pretty confident that I will win," Pargat told PTI. "You can win only if you play the game, by sitting outside you cannot think of victory," he said. Pargat will file his nomination tomorrow before the Returning Officer Justice R C Chopra. The former India full back said he decided to contest the elections because he felt he can make a difference and improve the state of the national game, which is running without a democratically-elected set-up since 2008. "Hockey has given so much to me and now it is my turn to give back my share to the game. I feel pity to see the present condition of hockey in India. Now the game is in doldrums," Pargat said. Hockey India had last month ratified the affiliations of 33 units, including four institutional boards, during its Special General Meeting. Earlier this week, Hockey India received a no-objection certificate from the Sports Ministry. Hockey India polls had been postponed thrice in the past because of various reasons, which had even irked the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

Police arrest 235 people in World Cup illegal gambling blitz

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 06:19 PM

Hong Kong, July 16 (DPA) Some 235 people were arrested and betting slips worth $46.3 million were seized in a month-long operation against illegal gambling on World Cup football matches, police said Friday.

Officers said 166 men and 69 women aged between 16 and 79 were detained during 96 raids on bars and other entertainment venues between June 11 and July 12.

Police also seized 77 computers and one computer server.

By comparison, 196 people and betting slips worth 74.5 million Hong Kong dollars were seized during the previous World Cup in 2006.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has a legal monopoly on gambling in the city, but illegal gambling is prevalent because bookmakers offer punters credit and loans to enable them to bet.

Posh says no to chest tattoo for Becks

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 06:07 PM

London. July 16 (ANI): Soccer star and former England captain David Beckham has revealed that he is obeying his wife Victoria's orders not to tattoo his chest.

The star said that he would like to have more inkling on his body but has to limit himself because of Posh and his mum Sandra.

"I have restricted them to my arms and back - my wife doesn't like to touch my chest. I mean, she does but doesn't want me to get tattoos there," the Mirror quoted Beckham as telling Yahoo.

"Each one has a meaning. My favourites are probably my boys' names on my back and my wife's name on my arm. I do have room, maybe I'll have more but my mum will kill me," he added.

David also admitted Victoria would not be happy if their sons followed in his tattooed footsteps. My youngest (five-year-old Cruz) had tattoos all over his arms when I came home from the World Cup, thankfully not real," he said.

"Romeo said he's going to have Mummy and Daddy on his arm. I'm not sure Victoria will like that too much!" he added. (ANI)

Uneven progress in CWG projects, MCD claims deadline to be met

Fri, Jul 16 10 05:53 PM

New Delhi, Jul 16 (PTI) With the Commonwealth Games just 77 days away, several redevelopment and beautification projects undertaken by MCD appeared to be stuttering towards completion but the civic body maintained that most work will be over by July 31. At an inspection visit of Games projects carried out by the MCD top brass including city Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney along with the media today, a mixed picture emerged. While the important bus parking bay near main sports venue Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was over, redevelopment work in several lanes of Paharganj in central Delhi seemed patchy. Leader of MCD House Subhash Arya said he was "90 per cent satisfied" with the work but admitted that "10 per cent shortcomings" are there. "There is a need to increase the pace of work in respect with Karol Bagh and Paharganj," he said. Both Arya and Sawhney expressed confidence that work on Games projects will be completed by July 31 -- the new deadline set by MCD -- but said in some areas, it might get further delayed as agencies like BSES were digging the roads for laying of cables. "The work has been up to satisfaction. There is no question of missing the deadline. In some areas, road digging work is posing a problem. If agencies like BSES stop digging today, we will be able to complete everything in time," the Mayor said after the inspection tour in which MCD Standing Committee Chairman Yogender Chandolia was also present. The MCD top brass appeared happy over the completion of the project for parking of 750 buses which was done after covering Khushak Nullah and Sunehari Nullah near JLN Stadium. "We have used German technology for this Rs 320 crore project. The parking bay over Khushak -- one km long and 65 metres wide -- is a key project as buses of athletes will come directly here from Games Village via Barapullah elevated road," Engineer-in-Chief Ravidass said. The Mayor called it an "wonderful achievement" and pointed out that work has been completed in just over a year. The crucial redevelopment work in hotels and guest houses near Paharganj, however, seemed to be half-finished in some lanes and construction waste was seen lying on streets. MCD had installed pebbled stretches beside lanes for parking cars and carried out underground ducting of cables in these areas. In some areas, local residents alleged that the MCD took several months to lay pebbles and ducting work has just started in some areas. "They only show the media the parts where work has been done. In fact, the digging work has led to breaching of sewer and water lines," a shopkeeper claimed. An MCD engineering department official said the work in some areas in Paharganj may take till August 30 to complete. "Of course, if BSES does their work faster, it will help us. But we have extended the deadline," he said. (More) PTI SDG

Swann eyes rerun of England's 1986-87 Ashes victory in Australia

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 05:39 PM

London, July 16(ANI): England off-spinner Graeme Swann hopes to emulate the Three Lions' Ashes victory of 1986-87 in Australia, and be part of a team that wins Down Under.

Swann said that he had been to the series as an eight-year-old, and has a recording titled 'On Top Down Under' which convinced him that he wanted to be a cricketer.

"That last series victory was the first time I fell in love with cricket," The Daily Express quoted Swann, as saying.

"Me and my brother [Alec, who was also a professional cricketer] watched On Top Down Under religiously, but we have not even come close to winning there again since," he added.

Swann, one of the stars of last summer's Ashes victory, also senses that the power is shifting, and for the first time in many a year, believes that a combined best XI from the two teams would contain more Englishmen than Australians.

"They still have some world-class players, but what they lacked last year was that Warne-McGrath figure. They don't have someone who has destroyed England for a decade," Swann said.

"I don't think anyone would turn down Ricky Ponting or Michael Clarke if they were offered to your team, or Michael Hussey maybe but, if you look at us player for player, we would be more than happy with our lot and, if we picked a team like that, we would have more players than them," he added. 'Mad skipper Kapil behind 1983 WC win'

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 05:23 PM

Members of 1983 World Cup winning team never thought of even reaching the semifinals but it was their "mad" skipper Kapil Dev's inspirational leadership that guided them to the coveted trophy, said chief India selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth.

Srikkanth, one of the key members of the squad that beat the mighty West Indies twice in 1983 World Cup including in the final, said many players had even booked flight tickets for United States for holidaying after the tournament as they thought they would not go beyond the group stage.

"None of players thought we would reach semifinals. So, many booked flight tickets for United States. The plan was to watch the semifinal and final and then fly to US for holiday. The tour agent said even my wife can come as I married in March 1983. So my booking was for Bombay-London-New York," he said at a book launch function last night.

"At that time we were minnows. Before 1983, we have won only one match in a World Cup, against East Africa which was a team not heard of. So to be honest there was no hope to go beyond the group stage not to speak of thinking to lift the trophy," said the former dashing opener while speaking on the topic "Leadership Imperatives in India: Role of New Leaders".

Srikkanth said Kapil was somehow very serious and said his side can beat the mighty West Indies and his self-belief rubbed off to his team-mates.

"Somehow Kapil was very serious, he has that Punjabi trait of nagging insistence on others to do something. He said we had beaten the West Indies once (in the 1971 tour) so we can beat them in our first group match at Old Trafford (on June 9, 1983). He said 'Dil se khelo' we can do it," he narrated.

"All the players said Kapil has gone mad. West Indies have Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes as openers. After that they have Vivian Richards, Larry Gomes, Jeff Dujon and four fast bowlers I have never wanted to face. But Kapil insisted at the pre-match meeting that we can beat them. That probably instil us the self-belief and eventually we beat them in the group match and in the final," Srikkanth said.

"I can say that 1983 World Cup group match victory against the West Indies (on June 9) was the turning point in India's ODI history. And I say there will never be another Kapil in this country and for that matter in the world," he declared.

Srikkanth, who led India in a Test tour to Pakistan in 1989, said a captain has to think sometimes out of the box and stick to his decision once taken.

"There was that ODI in Kanpur against England when the visiting side scored 278 at 5.4 runs an over which was a stiff rate at that time. I promoted Chetan Sharma to number four to the dismay of manager Chandu Borde. Chetan can tonk balls from the start whereas Dilip Vengsarkar or a Mohinder Amarnath would have consume a few balls first before settling in and that could have risen the asking rate," he expalined.

"When I returned to the pavilion I was fired volleys by Borde why Chetan was promoted but I said sir I am the captain and I have taken the decision. Chetan won the match for us with an unbeaten century," he said.

Capello agrees to add another English coach to backroom staff

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 04:59 PM

London, July 16(ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has agreed to recruit another English coach to his backroom staff.

The new coach will work alongside Stuart Pearce and Ray Clemence, as Capello attempts to learn the lessons of the dismal World Cup showing in South Africa.

The Italian agreed to make the change at a meeting with the Club England board on Thursday.

Despite England's failure, the Football Association (FA) agreed to honour the remaining two years on his contract, in part because of the lack of obvious alternative candidates and the financial consequences of sacking him, The Telegraph reports.

Sir Trevor Brooking, a member of the Club England board, will work with Capello to draw up a shortlist of potential candidates for the role.

It is apparently viewed as something of a 'fast track' path to coaching the senior side.

Former England striker Alan Shearer is likely to be among the names mentioned in relation to the post. (ANI)

No international cricket in Pakistan soon: ICC

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 04:52 PM

London, July 16 (ANI): Ruling out any immediate return of international cricket in Pakistan, the International Cricket Council (ICC), Chief Executive Haroon Logart has said that the apex authority would take stock of the situation in the terror hit country in December this year.

Talking to journalists here, Lorgat said the ICC was doing its best to accommodate the loss that the Pakistan cricket has been witnessing due to the refusal of foreign teams to visit the country over to security fears, and added that for the time being the best available option for Pakistan was to continue playing its home series on neutral grounds.

"We are doing our best to make sure that Pakistan continues playing international cricket. At the moment the best option for them is to play their home series aboard and that is exactly what they are doing," The News quoted Lorgat, as saying.

He said the ICC was in close contact with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and would take it into confidence before deciding on future series. (ANI)

CA mulls 'super striker' who can bat more than once for domestic one-dayers

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 04:38 PM

Sydney, July 16(ANI): Cricket Australia has proposed a new format for its domestic limited overs competition, where each teams will nominate a "super-striker" who will bat more than once.

It is also the revamp that CA wishes to ease into the international game in time for the 2015 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Talking about the new format, CA's marketing manager Julian Dunne said that it would offer a more bracing contest than the tired 50-over version.

"One day cricket isn't in massive decline, but it is in slight decline, and if we don't address it now, the decline will increase," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Dunne, as saying.

The new format would also let the bowling teams use a minimum of four bowlers in any way they see fit, rather than restricting them to spells of 10 overs each.

Fast bowlers will also be allowed to bowl two bouncers an over rather than one, while greater leniency will be applied to the interpretation of legside wides. (ANI)

England striker Heskey scored less than goalkeepers in international career

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 04:22 PM

London, July 16(ANI): England striker Emile Heskey, who has retired from international football, had scored fewer times than two goalkeepers.

Heskey scored just seven times in 62 appearances, which is one less than former Columbian goalkeeper Rene Higuita in 68 caps and Paraguay's Jose Luis Chilavert, who played 74 games for his country.

"It's the numbers of goals unfortunately that people will remember, but his strength, his pace, his ability to hold the ball up and his aerial ability were all the good facets of his game. His unselfishness is what players will remember him for most," The Sun quoted Sky Sports pundit Tony Gayle, as saying.

Gayle further said that Heskey's greatest game came when he scored to help England beat Germany 5-1 in Munich during a World Cup qualifier in September 2001.

"I was there when England beat Germany 5-1, and that's what I would like Emile to be remembered for in his international career. That was his real glory day for me," he added.

Heskey played at World Cups in 2002 and 2010, and the European Championship in 2000 and 2004. (ANI)

Paul the psychic octopus 'could transfer to Spain' after bidding war

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 03:52 PM

London, July 16 (ANI): Paul the psychic octopus may be heading for Spain after having correctly predicted the result of the 2010 World Cup final.

Madrid Zoo announced a transfer bid for the oracle octopus, which became a worldwide sensation after correctly predicting the outcome of as many World Cup matches as he has legs, The Telegraph reports.

Officials from Zoo Aquarium in Madrid told Paul's aquarium in Germany it would give him a warm welcome in gratitude for predicting Spain's World Cup one-zero win over the Netherlands.

They believe the eight-legged creature, named after a German children's book by Boy Lornsen, will attract thousands of visitors and become a star attraction.

Madrid zoo contacted the Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen "to ask them to transfer the animal" while making, what they said, was an offer to the Germans they could not refuse.

Officials promised to "improve on any offer received so far". It said the bid to came in response to "dozens of petitions from all over Spain".

They have offered an unspecified amount of cash and have also attempted to negotiate through an animal exchange programme.

But a spokeswoman for Paul said he was not for sale.

In octopus terms, Paul is already a pensioner, at the grand old age of two-and-a-half. Octopuses generally live three years at most. (ANI)

Rooney wins 4.3 million pound lawsuit bid by Proactive

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 03:22 PM

London, July 16(ANI): England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has defeated attempts by his former sports management firm, Proactive, to sue him for 4.3 million pounds.

Rooney was accused of withholding commission on multi-million pound deals brokered by Proactive, who used to represent him, The Telegraph reports.

Football agent Paul Stretford had signed the 24-year-old in 2002, but he took the striker along when he left Proactive in 2008.

The case followed Stretford's acrimonious departure, where Proactive claimed that they should be paid commission of 20 percent on Rooney's future deals.

However, Manchester Mercantile Court Judge Hegarty ruled that Proactive was only entitled to "restitution remedy" amounting to roughly 90,000 pounds.

Rooney was not present in the court, but in a statement released on his behalf admitted his satisfaction with the outcome.

"I am delighted to have won this case. Coleen and I have always been happy to pay all commissions due to the people who were owed them, but these sums were a joke and we felt they were just an attempt to exploit us," Rooney said.

"Fortunately the judge has knocked back their massively over-inflated claims and we are happy to pay the very small sum awarded," he added.

The agent also acts for Rooney's wife Coleen, whose celebrity career took off as her husband became an England regular following his 20 million pound transfer to Manchester United in 2004.

Stretford secured her the TV show Real Women, a column in Closer magazine and sponsorship deals with Asda and Diet Coke. (ANI)

Books and boxing go together for Nat''l champ Jasveer

Fri, Jul 16 10 02:52 PM

Poonam Mehra New Delhi, July 16 (PTI) In the rugged and rustic world that is Indian boxing, it is hard to find a pugilist who would devote as much time to books as to his training sessions in the ring. And that''s what makes two-time light heavy weight (81kg) national champion Jasveer Singh an exception. A Masters degree in Physical Education under his belt, the 24-year-old has put his plans for a Doctorate on hold at least for this year to focus completely on boxing in case he gets selected for the Commonwealth Games or the Asian Games. Part of the core group of Indian boxers training for the Commonwealth Games, the Haryana-lad has been under the shadow of his statemate Dinesh Kumar, an Olympian and a World Cup bronze medallist, but is confident of making his own mark soon. "I took up boxing because I wanted to be known as a good sportsperson, it''s a childhood ambition. But I wanted to pursue my studies as well. I wanted to have it both ways and was prepared for the that little extra effort," said the imposing boxer. "I have completed my Masters, I plan to do a PhD as well though I have not decided my subject as yet. I want ''Dr'' against my name. Maybe I will take up teaching at some stage as well but all that is secondary as I am completely focussed on boxing for now," he added. With a teacher as his elder brother, Jasveer had to take his books seriously and although his family never discouraged him from sports, in 2003 he ran away from his home in Neemli village with his wrestler cousin to pursue his sporting ambitions. London, July 16 (ANI): Professional golfer Tiger Woods' presence in Scotland for The Open title at St Andrews has garnered a lot of attention, especially from five stunning blonde models with tiger-print T-shirts on.

Woods, 34, however appeared to be immune to the charms put on by the girls, who had been hired by a bookies chain.

"We haven't been able to keep our eyes off the Tiger!" the Sun quoted one of the girls as saying.

But Woods refused to be distracted and went on to score 67, and after his round, he thanked the Scottish crowds.

"They're always respectful here. They were great today," he stated. (ANI)

Modi represented by lawyers at BCCI disciplinary hearing

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 01:48 PM

Suspended Indian Premier League Commissioner Lalit Modi, who is abroad, did not attend Cricket Board's Disciplinary Committee hearing on Friday and left the job of representing him before the three-member panel to his legal counsels.

Modi's attorney Mehmood Abdi, accompanied by three other lawyers, said before going into the meeting with the BCCI panel that his camp would raise the issue of recusal of interim IPL chairman Chirayu Amin and Arun Jaitley from the Committee.

"We are here to discuss the recusal issue as per the Bombay High Court order on Thursday. We have not received a copy of the order yet. After receiving the copy we will take a decision about asking for a new date of hearing from the BCCI," Abdi told reporters outside the BCCI headquarters.

On Thursday, the Bombay High Court refused to grant any relief to Modi and left the issue of reconstituting the Disciplinary panel on the members.

The division bench of Justices B H Marlapalle and Roshan Dalvi dismissed Modi's plea seeking reconstitution of the panel and cleared the deck for the disciplinary proceedings against him to commence.

However, the court also indicated that the final finding can be challenged by Modi and he can even raise the issue of constitution of the committee at that point.

Modi's objection to the committee was that it would be biased against him and he had sought that the panel be made up of independent persons, preferably retired supreme court judges.

But the division bench said that as per the BCCI rules, "Disciplinary committee has limited powers....it is only required to enquire into charges and submit the final report to the board. The board is the final decision-making body."

Modi had objected to Amin and Jaitley remaining on the panel.

Modi's lawyer Virag Tulzhapurkar said during the hearing of the petition that Amin had a "personal bias" against Modi, whereas Jaitley was on the IPL governing council which "ratified" formation of committee.

"So the decision of the committee is a foregone conclusion," he had argued.

But the court said that it was leaving the decision to these two persons whether they should withdraw from the panel on "moral grounds" and "it would not be proper for the court to interfere" now.

In his petition, Modi had sought suspension of the whole disciplinary proceedings.

But in view of his July 6 letter to the BCCI seeking reformation of the panel, court said that it would not consider other issues raised by him.

Caster Semenya wins comeback race in Finland

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 01:26 PM

Lappeenranta (Finland), July 16(ANI): South African 800 metres world champion Caster Semenya has won her first race since being cleared to return to competition after underdoing gender tests.

Semenya won the 800 meters in a modest time of two minutes, 04.22 seconds on Thursday at the Lappeenranta Games in Finland.

It may have been nearly nine seconds slower than her triumph at the World Championships in Berlin last summer, but having hardly trained in recent months, it was at the upper end of her and her coach's expectations.

"The performance was pretty good because after sitting at home for 11 months, to come back and run 2.04 is not easy, especially after what happened to me. So, yes, I'm pretty happy with it," The Telegraph quoted Semenya, as saying.

"I wasn't expecting to run 2.04, though my coach told me were going for 2.03 or 2.04. It's good. Even in South Africa, I used to run 2.03 or 2.04, so it's a good start," she added.

The 19-year-old was authorized to resume competing on July 6 after a review of gender-verification tests by global governing body the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

She is due to race in two or three further events in Europe before deciding whether to compete at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games in October. (ANI)

French team was fully united over World Cup 'strike', says unrepentant Anelka

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 01:22 PM

Paris, July 16(ANI): French striker Nicolas Anelka has refused to apologize for his part in the players' revolt that ripped apart the national team's World Cup campaign in South Africa.

Anelka was sent home from the tournament in disgrace following a foul-mouthed dressing-room bust-up with coach Raymond Domenech, after which the squad refused to train.

The 31-year-old said that the atmosphere inside the France camp was like a "timebomb", and the squad was united in their decision to go on strike.

"If it hadn't been me that brought it to a head, someone else would. It was waiting to happen. Everyone, and I really mean everyone, was as one," The Daily Express quoted Anelka, as saying.

"If there were some players who wanted to train, let them speak now. I'm 100 per cent sure that nobody will want to," he added.

Anelka's France teammate Jeremy Toulalan had publicly attacked Domenech's methods at the time, and recently admitted that he played a direct role in the "strike".

Toulalan admitted that the players should be punished, but said: "I'm not proud of what I did, but I accept responsibility."

"There were no ringleaders and no slaves, no good guys and no bad guys. We were all involved and we are all responsible," he added. (ANI)

US soccer star Landon Donovan denies he fathered Brit 'love child'

Published>Fri, Jul 16 10 12:38 PM

Los Angeles, July 16(ANI): U.S. striker Landon Donovan has said that he is not the father of a love child with a British woman.

"I will not be a dad any time soon, which is good news for me," The New York Post quoted Donovan, as saying.

The paternity scandal arose a day after U.S were eliminated from the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

A British woman had claimed to a U.K. tabloid that she was pregnant with a love child by the American striker.

Donovan is separated from his actress wife, Bianca Kajlich, but is believed to be hoping for reconciliation with her.

The couple have been separated for nearly a year, but are not divorced and do not have any children.

Earlier, the 28-year-old, who joined English Premier League club Everton on a 10-week loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2009, said: "I was informed of the possibility [of a pregnancy] during the World Cup, and if I need to take responsibility, then I will provide the appropriate support." (ANI)
