Kallis, Amla steady South African innings

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 01:29 PM

Nagpur, Feb 6 (IANS) Zaheer Khan gave India a rousing start, removing South African openers in a ferocious opening spell, before the visitors recovered through Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla to reach 90 for two at lunch on the first day of the first cricket Test here Saturday.

Electing to bat, South Africa were reduced to six for two. But Kallis dropped anchor, scoring an unbeaten 55, while Amla gave him support with a patient 24 to pull their side out of trouble.

Plagued by injuries at the start of the match, India received another blow in the morning when Rohit Sharma, named as back-up to the injured V.V.S. Laxman, hurt his ankle in the warm up session.

That paved the way for Bengal's wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha to make his Test debut. Tamil Nadu's Subramaniam Badrinath, who has been on the fringes for some years, was the other debutant for India.

Karnataka's Murali Vijay, who has done well whenever he got a chance, will bat at number three.

It will be a completely new Indian middle order with no Rahul Dravid, Laxman and Yuvraj Singh, who are all sitting out with injuries.

Zaheer livened up the proceedings with a lethal spell (6-4-2-2). The left arm seamer extracted pace, bounce and movement from the first day's wicket.

He got his reward in the fifth over of the day when Ashwell Price, surprised by a well-directed bouncer, played unsteadily and gave a catch behind the stumps. Though Prince was a touch unlucky as cameras later revealed that the ball reared up after brushing his arm guard.

South African captain Graeme Smith was clearly not comfortable facing Zaheer, who mixed his deliveries well.

Zaheer enjoys a good success rate against Smith and dismissed the in-form batsman with an excellent delivery that cut back a shade and crashed into the left-hander's stumps.

Veteran Kallis led the rescue act, buying his time in the middle to settle down. Amla provided him support at the other end.

Kallis remained unbeaten on 55 off 81 balls with six fours and one six. Amla's 24 came off 57 ball with two fours.

Defoe sponsoring a three-year-old orphan in South Africa

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 01:19 PM

London, Feb 6(ANI): England striker Jermain Defoe has revealed that he is sponsoring a three-year-old orphan Lerato in Rustenberg, South Africa through a regular donation to a children's charity.

Defoe, who has not met Lerato till now, will be taking time out from England's quest to lift the World Cup and meet her for the first time, which he knows will be a heart-rending and emotional encounter.

"I have been showing her picture to everyone and they are all saying how cute she is. I'm really looking forward to going to visit her in South Africa in the summer. Maybe it will be a special day for her, but I know it will definitely be special for me," The Sun quoted Defoe, as saying.

The 27-year-old said he thinks it is important to get involved in things like the charity to help people who are struggling and suffering to have a normal life.

"I just can't imagine growing up without my mum and my grandparents. I honestly don't know how I would have coped. They gave me so much love, help and so many opportunities and always told me to appreciate how lucky I was," Defoe said.

"And I have certainly been lucky in life. I always wanted to be a footballer and here I am living the dream and with all the trappings. And to realise that, for many people, it is hard out there," he added.

Defoe further believes that many people in United Kingdom could follow that lead.

"There's a lot of people in this country enjoying a good life and endless opportunities - yet we forget what we have sometimes. We get wrapped up with things that are not really that important and just can't see what's going on elsewhere in the world. There are people really struggling and we should all do what we can to help," Defoe said.

"It definitely means a lot to me to be involved with this - I'm putting something in, but also getting a whole lot out of it, too. It helps keep my feet on the ground, it gives me a focus outside of football and I'm proud that I am doing some good for someone, somewhere. That I'm helping take care of an orphan," he added. PCB chief Butt urges selectors to focus more on U-19 cricketers

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 01:09 PM

Lahore, Feb.6 (ANI): Admitting to flaws in the whole cricket set-up of the country, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt has urged the selectors to prepare a solid ground for under-19 cricketers, who have performed brilliantly in the recent past.

Pakistan's junior team reached the final of the recently concluded ICC U-19 World Cup, but was defeated by Australia.

Addressing a reception held in honour of the Pakistan U-19 team here, Butt said several young cricketers have been wasted in the pasted, a issue which must be addressed seriously by the administrators.

"Our Juniors have been performing well at this level but it was bad luck for them to not be able to reach the national team as they were lost somewhere on the way in the absence of a proper plan or programme for them. But I will now advise the selectors to keep a vigilant eye on this fresh lot," Butt said.

He hit out at former Pakistan cricketers who have shown less interest in training young talented players, rather always run after assignment with the senior team.

Butt said former Pakistani Test players should learn from Australian great Greg Chappell, who focuses more young guns.

"Chappell loves to work with upcoming talent as he did when he joined the Indian national team as coach but his emphasis was more on juniors," The Dawn quoted Butt, as saying.(ANI)

New England skipper too has his fair share of scandals

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 12:56 PM

London, Feb. 6 (ANI): Rio Ferdinand, who is succeeding John Terry as England captain, has a far from a squeaky clean image craved by fans, as he has been involved in more than his fair share of football scandals.

Six years ago, the 31-year-old was banned from playing for eight months and fined 50,000 pounds after missing a drugs test at Manchester United's training ground.

As a result, he missed the 2004 European Championship finals. The defender's excuse was that he had forgotten and gone shopping instead, the Daily Express reports.

Ferdinand, known for his love of fast cars, was dropped from the England set-up in 1997 at the age of just 18 because of a drink-driving charge.

In 2005 he received his fourth driving ban after overtaking a police car at 105mph.

Two years ago, he provoked the wrath of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for organising a drunken Christmas party.

The 400-pounds-a-head celebration at a leading Manchester hotel ended with his team-mate Jonny Evans being arrested, then cleared, of rape allegations.

During that rendezvous, dozens of women were specially brought in by bus for the evening and later complained they were "treated like pieces of meat".

Ferdinand is currently serving a four-match ban after the FA found him guilty of elbowing Hull's Craig Fagan. (ANI)

I'll be watching every ball of the game

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 11:56 AM

India, Feb. 5 -- It has been a very, very strange week but an enjoyable one, too, watching the preparations for the first Test from the comfort of my study. On one hand I am missing the buzz and excitement that a Test series always provides, but on the other I am realising how much my life has been consumed by the job. I'm not afraid to discuss the reasons behind my resignation but, for now, you will have to wait. The last thing in the world I would risk is a distraction for Graeme and his team on the first day of an important Test. I will talk later. I've spoken to many of the team members and have been in regular touch with Graeme and my feeling is that they are all in very good physical and emotional condition. South African teams have always regarded it as honour and privilege to play in and against the biggest cricket nation on earth. Perhaps that's why our Test record in India is so impressive. Graeme and I targeted the first five days of the tour as being crucial to our potential success and the intensity of the training and preparation in the build-up to the Test match heeded to be as high as ever. The team have managed to do exactly that under the guidance of Corrie van Zyl and Kepler Wessels. For five years Graeme and I had a belief that if you started a Test stronger than the opposition, you had more chance of finishing it strongly. We always felt that the first hour set the tone for the match, we believed it was easier to win a Test by taking the lead early rather than having to come from behind. I expect Steyn, Morkel and Parnell to be ultra-aggressive against Sehwag. They will bowl at full pace at his body in an attempt to cramp him for room. We know from painful experience that he is not a man to give any room to! I'll be interested to see how effective Gambhir will be against South Africa's pace attack. He has only limited experience against the Proteas and very few players make an immediate impact against the South African style of play. Even the great Sachin averages under 30 against SA on home soil.

India's quest for glory begins in Orange City

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 11:40 AM

Nagpur, Feb. 5 -- After a decade or more of Australian dominance, this series, beginning today, is the start of the battle for the future. India: Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Murali Vijay, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman/Rohit Sharma, S. Badrinath, MS Dhoni (Capt-wk), Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Amit Mishra/Pragyan Ojha, Ishant Sharma. South Africa:Graeme Smith (capt), Ashwell Prince, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Mark Boucher (w-k), Paul Harris, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn, Wayne Parnell. Weather

Flat, slowish, low bounce, somewhat dry, regular Indian wicket that is expected to take turn from Day 3. Both skippers think reverse swing will play a pivotal role in the game. Pitch

There were brief showers on Thursday but Friday was clear and cool. Saturday is expected to be cloudy in part, but the forecast doesn't predict a washout. Temperatures are expected to be in the low 30s. (Live on Neo Sports at 9.30 am) It has all the elements of a delicious contest. South Africa's as-yet raw pace pairing of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel are up against the world's best opening partnership in Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. The talented combine of AB de Villiers, Ashwell Prince and Hashim Amla, representing the united colours of South Africa, are warily waiting to battle India's tweakers in what Proteas spinner Paul Harris dubbed, "the Mecca for spinners." Add two warhorses, Zaheer Khan and Mark Boucher; and two legends - Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis. Finally, throw in two fascinating, powerful young leaders in Graeme Smith and MS Dhoni, swaggering into battle like gladiators of old. Even though "Dravid will be missed", as Dhoni put it, and VVS Laxman is iffy, there are enough ingredients in here to stir up a sporting Molotov cocktail. So why then, is it all so low-key? Less than 24 hours before the fight for No. 1 begins, there are no mind-games, no calls to arms, no macho predictions of glory. It's all very civilised. Even, dare one say it, somewhat friendly and subdued. Perhaps it's because we're all a bit jaded by the breathless pace of international cricket and this just happens to be one of those down times. Perhaps it's because of the disappointing lack of local interest in what could be a dramatic, top-level contest - after all, in all serious theatre, atmosphere is a must. Or perhaps it's just the way we Indians perceive the South African team - as a chillingly efficient machine, programmed to perform a certain way. But then, so are the Aussies. Then why is it that we don't look forward to beating the Proteas - at the moment rated as good as, or better than, the men from Oz -- with as much relish as we would a chance to dent Ponting's pride? We want to beat the South Africans, that is certain. But we don't particularly want to beat them into brainless, bloody submission and then dance violently on the remnants of their collective pride. That's the difference. The answer, perhaps, lies in a last, almost-in-passing comment Smith made on Friday. "We've got everything to gain on this tour and India have everything to lose." True enough. At the moment, they are the challengers, not India. Despite their efficiency and undoubtedly great record at home and abroad, despite their coming close to beating India in a home series two years ago - India were saved by a Kanpur pitch Dale Steyn dubbed a 'bunsen-burner' - the Proteas somehow, have never seemed invincible - unlike the Aussies.

And while the eve has been quiet, perhaps the game itself will stir our souls.

According to reports, Warne has given the state Government the thumbs-up for its attempts to rebuild Victoria's battered reputation in India.

"The Premier, who I think is doing a good job, and I are both on the same wavelength. We are both passionate about Victoria and Melbourne. I think statistics show Melbourne has a low crime rate for a major city, and I know it is a great place to live," The Herald Sun quoted Warne, as saying.

Dhoni loses toss, South Africa to bat; Rohit in for Laxman, Saha in for Rohit

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 11:20 AM

Nagpur, Feb. 6 -- Zaheer Khan struck early on the first day of the Nagpur Test, with wickets of skipper Graeme Smith and Ashwell Prince as South Africa lost two early wickets on Saturday. After injury problems in the side and lose of toss, captain Dhoni must have felt a bit better with two early wickets. The two batsman on the the crease are Hashim Amla (9) and Jacques Kallis on the individual score of 5, with South Africa on 21 for the loss of two wickets. Earlier today, India got off to the most inauspicious of starts in the first Test against South Africa in Nagpur on Saturday, after Rohit Sharma, himself a last-minute replacement for the injured VVS Laxman, twisted his left ankle about an hour before start of play, while playing a form of touch rugby.

A very surprised wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, in the team as cover for India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's bad back, found himself being congratulated by coach Gary Kirsten and fellow debutant S Badrinath just ahead of the toss.

Saha, who became a familiar face during the Indian Premier League as part of the Kolkata Knight Riders, becomes part of a small clutch of players from Bengal to have earned the right to wear an India Test cap. He will be the first player from Bengal after Sourav Ganguly to do so. Saha incidentally, will play as a batsman only, at No. 7, as skipper Dhoni preferred to keep the gloves on. Amit Mishra, expectedly, was picked ahead of Pragyan Ojha as Harbhajan Singh's spin partner. Shortly after the Sharma mishap, India's morning misery was complete as Proteas skipper Graeme Smith gleefully indicated to his teammates that they would bat.

South Africa: Smith, Morkel, Harris, Amla, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Prince, Steyn, Boucher, Kallis, Parnell, Peterson (12th man)

Mukesh clinches title in style, Jaini second

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 10:55 AM

Kolkata, Feb. 5 -- For Mukesh Kumar to squander his three-stroke lead going into the final round of the Aircel Players Championship at the par-70 Tolly Club course on Friday, either he had to play exceptionally poorly or his nearest rivals had to do something special. Playing safe golf with clinical precision and showing unwavering professionalism, the man with countless titles on the Indian pro tour dismissed the first possibility by consistently saving par on the front nine with a solitary birdie. Needing a good start to make a match of it, Manav Jaini suffered two early bogeys instead, including one on the par-three sixth where he had a hole-in-one in the first round. Mukesh killed the contest by birdying the par-five seventh to open up a six-stroke lead and went on to win the title by the same margin after a round of 68 which gave him a tally of 12-under. For all practical purposes, it became a fight for the second place between Jaini and Anthony Paul Choat thereon and despite not having the best of days, the former cared a one-over for a career-best finish. The Australian missed some putts agonisingly close to end with one-over for a share of the third spot. It was a career-best finish for Choat too, in his second year on the Professional Golf Tour of India. There was a sense of inevitability about Mukesh's victory. Knowing that the onus was on others to play aggressively and catch up with him, he didn't hit the ball as well as he had in the third round, but played effective second or third shots whenever there was a hint of trouble. That he didn't miss any short putt was a major reason behind his second successive bogey-free round. The closest things became was on the par-five 13th which Jaini birdied to move to seven-under.

It's Terry funny

Published Sat, Feb 06 10 10:39 AM

New Delhi, Feb. 6 -- After golfer Tiger Woods, another sportsman has gotten embroiled in an adultery scandal. John Terry, who captains Chelsea in the English Premier League and is also the captain of England's national football team, made headlines when news of his affair with his wife's best friend, his teammate's girlfriend - lingerie model Vanessa Perroncel - came out. Since then, jokes about Terry have started doing the rounds online. Here are a few of them: A Chelsea player is stopped for speeding at 130mph in a 30mph zone. When the police ask him to explain, he says: "I've just heard John Terry is parked outside my house." Well, Wayne Bridge (Vanessa's footballer boyfriend) is always injured, someone had to step in and do it. I knew John liked scoring, but this is just ridiculous.

Song: Where ever you may be, don't leave your wife with John Terry.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first against India in Saturday's opening test of a two-match series.

Subramaniam Badrinath will make his test debut in the middle order, while third opener Murali Vijay takes Dravid's number three spot.

South Africa can reclaim the top test ranking from India if they win the series and have included Paul Harris as lone specialist spinner in a pace-oriented attack on what appears to be a flat pitch.

Johnson, Stricker lead soggy Northern Trust Open

Dustin Johnson tees off on the 12th hole during the first round of the Northern...

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 10:09 AM

Dustin Johnson hit a hole-in-one in pouring rain to upstage fellow American Steve Stricker's green-side theatrics and hold a share of the second-round lead at the Northern Trust Open on Friday.

Both were tied at 10-under par after play was halted at the sodden Riviera Country Club, where failing light left 41 of the field unable to complete their rounds.

Overnight leader Johnson was three-under par with two holes to play, while Stricker made the most of his early start to shoot a six-under 65. Argentina's Andres Romero finished three strokes behind the leaders at one-under with three to play.

Johnson, whose putter lit up the greens to carve a one-stroke lead on Thursday, conjured some magic with his eight-iron on the sixth. His 152-yard tee-shot in pouring rain landed four feet behind the hole then spun the ball back into the cup.

"It was probably my best shot of the day," Johnson said.

"I hit eight-iron and made it, so that always helps the round a little bit."

Johnson had the outright lead until he made his first bogey of the tournament on No. 15. He failed to reach the par 4 in two shots and could not get up and down to save his par.

"It was just kind of a funky stance beside the bunker and chunked it a little short of the green," Johnson said. "I didn't get it up and down."

Stricker lamented the damp conditions, despite handling them with aplomb, and felt lucky to get out early to finish with the day's best round.

"It was pretty miserable out there," the American said. "It never really let up. Conditions probably even got a little worse as the day went on."

Stricker started his round from the back nine in style, sinking a 21-foot putt from off the green to save par. He then chipped in from greenside rough for a birdie on the 18th, his third for the tournament.

He came close to emulating Johnson with his own ace on the fourth, where his tee shot, using a utility club, lipped out to rest less than two feet from the cup.

"A lot of good things happened," he added. "Some of the toughest holes on the course and I'm making birdies. You know, you try to run with it and you're like stealing shots when stuff like that happens."

After a lacklustre opening round of 72, Phil Mickelson stormed back into contention with a five-under 66, after finding form off the tee and on the greens.

"I've got to go low (Saturday)," Mickelson said. "I know that, but it's out there if you play well."

American Rocco Mediate and Sweden's Jesper Parnevik withdrew from the tournament citing back injuries, while another American in Chris Couch pulled out after complaining of a shoulder injury.

Nikhil was the other noteworthy contributor with 41 runs. He blasted two boundaries and equal numbers of sixes during his 21 ball knock. The duo played some scintillating shots and helped the team post a competitive score.

Chasing the target, DAV-15 batsmen were well on target from the word go and began to deal in boundaries rather than singles and twos. Vishal Thind was in sublime form as he took just 52 balls to score a quick-fire 81 runs. Harman supported him well and helped the team overhaul the target in just 19.3 overs with five wickets to spare. He contributed 48 runs off just 45 balls.

Meanwhile, in another quarter-final match, APJ Kharar defeated St Stephen's School, Sector 45, by five wickets. Batting first, St Stephen's-45 made 106 for 9 in 20 overs. Abilash top scored for the team with 18 runs, while Manul Jain also scored an identical 18 runs.

In reply, APJ Kharar made 109 for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. Kapil Punia top scored with 31 runs but it was Balwidner's superb knock of 29 runs off 22 balls that helped the team register a hard-fought win. He was later adjudged the man of the match for his innings.

Brief scores:

DAV -8: 181 for 3 in 20 overs (Prashant 55, Nikhil 41) lost to DAV Model School-15: 182 for 5 in 19.3 overs (Vishal Thind 81, Harman 48)

St Stephen's School, Sector 45; 106 for 9 in 20 overs (Abilash 18, Manul Jain 18) lost to APJ Kharar: 109 for 6 in 20 overs (Kapil Punia 31, Balwinder 29).

Test for new-look middle order

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 05:11 AM

A few kilometres away from the Nagpur airport is Zero Mile, India's geographical centre, marked by a nondescript statue of four horses and a stone pillar. A few kilometres drive in the opposite direction takes you to the Vidarbha Cricket Association ground in Jamtha, a futuristic stadium in the middle of nowhere, and one that will be at the centre of the cricketing world's attention over the next five days.

India take on South Africa in the first of two hurriedly organised Tests starting Saturday, in a battle between the top two teams in the International Cricket Council's numbers game. Inevitably, the focus of the captains' pre-match briefings remained the rankings (South Africa can overtake India if they win both games), but it was hardly surprising that the tag wasn't on top of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's mind.

Heading the list of his worries remained whether or not the backroom staff could get VVS Laxman fit enough to play. "There's some uncertainty over Laxman, who was in the nets today," Dhoni said. "He will come back and talk to the physio. We're hoping he'll be fit."

For Indian cricket fans, dreams can slip seamlessly into nightmares when thoughts drift to the future, with the crystal ball showing a middle-order minus some of the most accomplished run-getters the sport has seen. All of a sudden, in the most important home series India have played in a while, they'll get a glimpse into a future no one's really keen on seeing.

Rahul Dravid, with a broken cheekbone, will not march in studiously at No 3. Yuvraj Singh, this time with an injured wrist, will be missing at No 6. And if Laxman's finger injury doesn't heal in time, the collective hole will be fairly large.

Since he made his debut on India's 1996 tour of England, Dravid has missed just one Test. Laxman, since that unforgettable day out at the Eden Gardens against Australia in 2001, has not made the XI in only nine games out of 88 ? and a significant number of them as a scapegoat to India's obsession with playing five specialist bowlers midway through the decade. Even Yuvraj Singh, statistically the easiest of the lot to replace, has played some crucial knocks since Sourav Ganguly's retirement gave him a more permanent slot in the side.

An entire generation has now grown up on a line-up that's read like a who's who of cricket's record books; you squeeze Murali Vijay, S Badrinath and Rohit Sharma in there all at once and ? even accounting for the trio's undeniable talent ? India look decidedly shaky on paper.

Dhoni, obviously, likes to see it as an opportunity. "Injuries are beyond our control. We will miss Rahul, but somebody has to step up and do the work for the team. I'm expecting some of the youngsters to get an opportunity to prove themselves and score runs for the side," he said.

Vijay has looked solid in both his Tests, while Badrinath, certain to make his debut, will be out to prove he's much more than a flat-track, domestic cricket bully. If Rohit does get a look-in, it'll be a chance even he wouldn't have expected to come his way this early.

Added pressure: Smith

Visiting skipper Graeme Smith, who has indulged in no mind games on this trip so far, turned on the heat ever so politely on the Indian openers, saying the fact that India were missing Dravid, Yuvraj and, perhaps, Laxman in the middle-order, meant the pressure on Virender Sehwag to deliver would be much higher. About the rankings, he said the side would focus on the task at hand and if they did that, the ranking would take care of itself. "The bigger opportunity is for us to beat India and we have got everything to gain on this tour while India have got everything to lose," he said.

If India do win, they'll have extended their stay at No 1. If they lose, South Africa would have taken a giant step towards reclaiming the crown. But the next five days could be about more than that; this could be a Test that actually gives an inkling of what lies ahead.

All tickets sold for World Cup semis and final - FIFA

Published Sat, Feb 06 10 01:10 AM

Tickets for the World Cup semi-finals and final, as well as two of England's first round matches in South Africa, have sold out, FIFA said on Friday.

FIFA said there were no more tickets for England's matches against the United States in Rustenburg on June 12 and Slovenia in Port Elizabeth on June 23.

Tickets for the match between world champions Italy and Paraguay in Cape Town on June 11 and Brazil and Portugal in Durban a fortnight later have also sold out.

The final phase of World Cup tickets sales will open on Tuesday with more than 400,000 seats still available.

Fans have until April 7 to bid for tickets for 53 of the 64 matches at the tournament, which runs from June 11-July 11.

The fourth phase of sales is again to be conducted over the internet, and also for South African residents at bank branches, but this time will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

World soccer's governing body said it had sold 585,175 tickets, some 70 percent to local residents, in its third sales phase, which closed last month and which was drawn on a lottery basis and allocated this week.

iNTERVIEW - Lack of drug testing a concern, says WADA

David Howman, director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) poses at their head offices...

Published>Sat, Feb 06 10 12:17 AM

The continued failure of boxing authorities to comply with standard drug testing procedures is a concern, World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) director general David Howman has told Reuters.

Drug testing has been discussed at length following the collapse last month of a proposed bout between the sport's two best pound-for-pound fighters, Floyd Mayweather Jr (40-0) and Filipino Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2).

Pacquiao refused to the American's request for Olympic-style random blood testing and will fight Ghanaian Joshua Clottey instead on March 13.

"There are countless numbers of bodies that profess to be running boxing and holding boxing fights, none of them fall under any umbrella body that has made any attempt to be a part of WADA," Howman told Reuters via telephone from Montreal on Friday.

"It is obvious they (organising bodies) are not making any attempt to clean up their sport and that leaves us with, not only a lot of concern, but a pretty nasty taste in the mouth.

"There have been sufficient incidents in the world of professional boxing to show there has been doping in the past and you would have to be pretty stupid to think it wouldn't be continuing so why are they not doing anything about it?," added Howman.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) carries out testing for WADA in the U.S, where most boxing organisations are based, but have struggled to implement the code.

"They (USADA) have tried and had a little bit of success with one boxer laying down conditions for a recent fight, the Mayweather fight, but their conversations have really come to nought so far and that's a bit disappointing not only for them but for us," Howman said.

"This is a unique code which covers every country in the world so those that are not part of it ought to be reflecting and saying "why are we not adhering to these rules?".

COMMON SENSE

Mayweather's insistence on random testing, however, showed Howman there was hope the sport could make clear it was clean.

"I would anticipate at some stage common sense will prevail," Howman said. "Generally speaking it will be the clean athlete that wants to show he is fighting clean and if the others are not, then why not?"

Pacquiao, who filed a lawsuit in December saying Mayweather falsely accused him of using performance-enhancing drugs, offered to have blood drawn 30 days prior to the proposed bout but not after, as he was concerned that random testing would be intrusive of his training.

"Your first thought is he is cheating if he is not prepared to do something that shows he is not cheating," Howman said of Pacquiao, who has never tested positive.

"Blood tests are pretty simple, it's a prick in the arm, it is not going to deplete his energy or ability to fight. You are not taking a pint of blood, you are taking a very small amount."

Mayweather will instead fight on May 1 against WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley.

Mayweather and Pacquiao are expected to talk again about a possible bout late in the year, most likely under random testing, should they win their forthcoming contests.

"Isn't that a good thing?", Howman said. "That can only do him (Pacquiao) good."

S.Africa risks own goal with World Cup profiteering

Published Sat, Feb 06 10 12:09 AM

South Africa's government is appalled by apparent profiteering at this year's World Cup and has appealed to airlines and hotels not to threaten the success of the soccer tournament, the sports minister said on Friday.

Organisers and fans have condemned the high cost of air travel and reports of exhorbitant prices for accommodation during the month-long event that risk scaring off supporters from what South Africa hopes will be a showpiece tournament luring tourists for years to come.

Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile said the government was disturbed about plans by many South Africans to use the World Cup -- from June 11 to July 11 -- to make a quick profit at the expense of the country's image.

"We have consistently appealed to South Africans not to fall into this short-term temptation ... nobody wants to be fleeced like that and ever come back to the country," he told reporters after a monthly cabinet meeting on preparations for the event.

"You may be able to make a quick buck from people who are stranded for accommodation but in the bigger scheme of things you are doing the country a huge injustice ... they will be convinced that we are a bunch of 'groot skelms' (bad criminals)."

Soccer supporters abroad and in other African countries have complained they cannot afford the high cost of flights and hotel prices, setting off alarm bells among organisers.

Long-haul tickets to South Africa are generally expensive due to a scarcity of seats, while some prices for internal air travel have trebled for the month of the World Cup.

Accommodation prices have increased even more, by three, four or even 10-fold for some luxury digs.

Stofile said hotels had agreed a number of years ago to limit price increases for the tournament but facilities built since then and those not party to deal seemed to be intent on charging excessive prices.

Air travel costs were also of serious concern.

"We enjoin all airlines not to milk the people of South Africa and, indeed, the people of the world only because they are keen to be part of the World Cup," he said.

"It is not right, it is morally incorrect."

The country's competition watchdog last month started a probe of the six major domestic airlines for alleged price fixing during the World Cup.

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said foreign airlines transporting teams to the country would be allowed to fly internally, and added that 500 buses would be available to transport fans between host cities.

Terry must play against Arsenal, says Chelsea coach

Published>Fri, Feb 05 10 11:09 PM

Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti said he never considered leaving out John Terry for Sunday's big game against Arsenal because of his off-the-field problems.

"John has to play against Arsenal because he's one of the most important players in the team and we need to put strength and quality in the team," Ancelotti told reporters on Friday before the FA announced Terry had been stripped of the England captaincy.

The Chelsea defender was sacked as England skipper by international coach Fabio Capello following intense media speculation over Terry's private life.

Capello's fellow Italian Ancelotti said it had been business as normal this week as Premier League leaders Chelsea prepared to host third-placed Arsenal.

"Nothing is different about the last week," said Ancelotti. "The problem involving John is outside our training ground.

"It's normal life for us. It's an important game against a strong team and I think we will be ready to play our best game."

Ancelotti said he was surprised at the level of media interest in married father of two Terry.

The 29-year-old defender's private life would never have caused such a stir in Italy, said the Chelsea coach before adding he would not interfere with the situation over the England team.

'NOT MY PROBLEM'

"I'm not interested in Capello and John Terry," said Ancelotti. "It's not my problem.

"John is focusing on his job. He is doing very well every day, every moment. He's the captain of this team and he's doing his best for the team. He's been playing well the last two games, he scored at Burnley (last Saturday).

"It's his private life and I don't want to know nothing about this. I'm interested only in his professional behaviour and his professional behaviour is the best," said Ancelotti.

"Some coaches phone players at home to check on them. I have never done this. I'm interested in the players on the training ground and controlling their behaviour only at the ground."

Chelsea, who beat Arsenal 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium in November, are six points ahead of their London rivals and two in front of Manchester United.

Arsenal lost 3-1 at home to United last weekend and face a Chelsea team unbeaten at home for more than a year.

Ancelotti's only injury absentee is versatile Brazilian Juliano Belletti.

Didier Drogba, who has scored 10 goals against Arsenal in nine starts and two substitute appearances since joining Chelsea in 2004, is likely to partner Nicolas Anelka up front.

John Terry was sacked as England captain on Friday after a brief meeting with coach Fabio Capello, said the Football Association (FA).

The Chelsea defender, who was first made full-time skipper in 2006 by former coach Steve McClaren, has been the subject of intense media speculation following allegations about his private life.

"After much thought I have made the decision it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry," Capello said on the FA website (www.thefa.com).

"As a captain with the team John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad.

"What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice," added Capello.

The Italian retained Terry as skipper when he took the England job in 2008 after the sacking of McClaren and since then the team have flourished, qualifying easily for the World Cup in South Africa in June.

However, married father of two Terry's suitability to continue in the high-profile role has been questioned after the recent damaging media coverage.

Avantha Masters signals growing strength of Indian golf

Published>Fri, Feb 05 10 10:20 PM

Gurgaon, Feb 5 (IANS) The arrival of next week's 1.5 million euros Avantha Masters signals the emergence of Indian golf on the Asian platform.

The latest offering on the Asian Tour and co-sanctioned with the European Tour, the Avantha Masters amply mirrors the growing strength of the Asian Tour where like the region's established circuit, Indian golf is no longer regarded as the sleeping giant.

Even as the who's who of Asian golf and prominent names from Europe vie with one another for the top purses, the world is awakening to Indian golfing strength.

From the likes of Jeev Milkha Singh and Arjun Atwal to Gaganjeet Bhullar, Anirban Lahiri and Himmat Rai, India's fortunes have sparkled through numerous achievements and victories across Asia and elsewhere.

India holds the proud record of having produced the most number of Asian Tour Order of Merit champions, through Singh in 2006 and 2008, Atwal in 2003 and Jyoti Randhawa, the country's first Asian number one, in 2002.

In between those proud moments for Indian golf, others have launched their careers by securing 'wins' next to their names.

Gaurav Ghei, Feroz Ali, Shiv Kapur, S.S.P. Chowrasia, C. Muniyappa and Bhullar have all added their names onto the Asian Tour's Roll of Honour with life-changing victories.

Jeev Milkha Singh, who holds six wins in Asia and is now an honorary member of the Asian Tour, credited the Tour for giving him the platform to launch his career which has seen him secure multiple titles in Europe and Japan as well.

'This is where I started from and I will never forget that,' said Jeev. 'I will always go back and support the Asian Tour. The way the Asian Tour has grown is fantastic to see. I strongly believe that the Asian Tour will continue to grow and produce top-class players.'

Atwal, who has won seven times on the Asian Tour, said the region's circuit, which has travelled to 19 different countries over the years, helped shape his growing years as a professional.

'My first Q-school was in 1995 and just to learn how to make cuts and be in contention and finally win, all those I learnt on the Asian Tour,' said Atwal.

Their combined success on the Asian Tour, which have lifted Jeev, Randhawa, Atwal and Ghei into the top-20 of the career earnings with a cumulative haul of over $8 million in winnings, have sparked the emergence of a new and exciting generation of golfers.

Former Asian Games gold medal winner Kapur led the new wave by winning the 2005 Volvo Masters of Asia and since then, a string of other young guns have burst through onto the Asian Tour.

S.S.P. Chowrasia and C. Muniyappa claimed magical victories in 2008 and 2009 to transform their lives while Bhullar broke through last year to win his first title en route to finishing sixth on the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

Lahiri and Himmat Rai are other young players touted for a big future.

Pathak, Yusuf lead West fightback in Duleep final

Hyderabad, Feb 5 (PTI) Gritty batting by Chirag Pathak (130) and Yousuf Pathan (84 not out) today brought West Zone back into the game as their Duleep Trophy final against South Zone is heading for an exciting finish. Hyderabad, Feb 5 (PTI) Gritty batting by Chirag Pathak (130) and Yousuf Pathan (84 not out) today brought West Zone back into the game as their Duleep Trophy final against South Zone is heading for an exciting finish. Chasing an improbable 536 for a win, West finished the day four at 379 for six, needing 157 more runs with Yusuf standing between their victory and defeat. Stumper Penal Shah (0) was at the crease with first innings centurion Yusuf when the stumps were drawn for the day. Resuming at 50 without loss and a mountain of runs to climb, Pathak and his fellow opener Harshad Khadiwale (45) batted with steely resolve as they put up 117 runs for the opening wicket. Srikkanth Anirudha broke the partnership by accounting for Khadiwale but West skipper Wasim Jaffer carried on the good work and hit a composed 66, adding 107 for second wicket with Pathak. Soon after Jaffer''s fall, Bhavin Thakar got his second successive duck and Pathak too started his walk back, giving South enough reasons to think of victory. .

Australia beat Pakistan by 2 runs to complete a summer clean-sweep

Published>Fri, Feb 05 10 07:55 PM

Melbourne, Feb 5(ANI): World Twenty20 champion Pakistan on Friday failed to end their disastrous Australia tour on happy note, as they lost the only Twenty20 match at Melbourne Cricket Ground by two runs.

Pakistan were a different outfit in the field and dismissed the home side for a paltry 127 runs in 18.4 overs, but their batting fell the same way it did in the three Tests and five one-dayers as Australia fought back to dismiss them for 9-125 in their 20 overs.

Australia elected to bat first after winning the toss and cruised to 1-50 in 60 overs, before Pakistan bowlers struck back to take wickets at regular intervals.

The home side lost their last nine wickets for 73 and only David Hussey (40 not out), Michael Clarke (32) and David Warner (24) reached double figures.

Hussey ran out of partners with eight balls remaining, against some good bowling from Umar Gul (3-20) and Shoaib Malik (2-31) and sharp fielding, which included three run-outs, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Pakistan's reply got off to a bad start, as opening pair Imran Farhat and Imran Nazir went back to pavilion on the score of 10.

Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait was the star with 3-11, as he claimed wickets in his second and third over.

Tait also struck in his 15th over, where he removed the dangerous Kamran Akmal, whose 64 from 33 balls had the tourists headed for a breakthrough win.

Dirk Nannes and Shane Watson bowled brilliantly at the death and conceded nine runs in the final two overs as Pakistan finished 9-125, even though Mohammad Asif hit the last ball for four. (ANI)

By Our Chess Correspondent Gibraltar, Feb 5 (PTI) Grand Master Sandipan Chanda and Geetha Narayanan Gopal of India finished in a nine-way tie for the top spot in the Gibtelecom Masters chess tournament here. Chanda played a fine game to beat Lela Javakhishvili of Georgia, but later missed his chances in the play-off games for the top prize when he blundered a winning position against Francisco Vallejo Pons of Spain. Having lost the first game, Chanda had to win to force an Armageddon play-off in the semifinal but the position slipped out of hands and petered in to a draw in quick time. Earlier in the day, Chanda played Dutch defense to beat Javakhishvili and set up the tiebreaker. Playing black, the then Indian came up with an excellent king side attack in the middle game to romp home. Meanwhile, Gopal was at his technical best in beating former women''s world champion Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria to also register 7.5 points. Gopal stole the show with his technique against Stefanova. It was a Ruy Lopez wherein Stefanova apparently equalised in the middle game but was outsmarted in the final part of the game. .

Laxman continues to be doubtful for Nagpur Test

Published>Fri, Feb 05 10 07:19 PM

Nagpur, Feb 5 (IANS) Plagued by injuries, India would be hoping for the return of experienced V.V.S. Laxman to strengthen its middle order batting, but his fitness ahead of the first cricket Test against South Africa continues to be in doubt.

India are already without Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh, who got injured during the recently concluded Bangladesh tour. While Dravid fractured his jaw, Yuvraj injured his wrist.

In such a case, Laxman's presence in the middle order becomes all the more important. The 35-year-old suffered a finger injury and had to sit out in the second Test in Dhaka.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni Friday said a decision on Laxman's availability for Saturday's Test is yet to be taken.

'There is uncertainty over Laxman at the moment,' Dhoni said on the eve of the match Friday.

'He will speak to the physio on how he feels and then we will take a decision on him.'

Rohit Sharma has already been flown in as as a cover of Laxman. In the absence of seniors, Subramaniam Badrinath, and Murli Vijay will also be hoping for their chances.

'We will miss our experienced players, but at the end of the day somebody needs to step up and do the work for the team,' he said.

'Their absence provides an opportunity for the youngsters to step in and score runs.'

'International cricket is a challenge. Pressure will be there but we have openers who have done well in the past. There is no reason why they cannot do that again. We're a team that relies on a good start. After that, we go on to dominate,' Dhoni said.

South African skipper Graeme Smith said the injuries to the key players will affect India.

'Guys like Laxman and Dravid come with a lot of experience. It does put more pressure on their openers (Gautam) Gambhir and (Virender) Sehwag,' Smith said.

Dhoni, Smith target each other ahead of Kanpur Test

Published>Fri, Feb 05 10 07:09 PM

Kanpur, Feb 5 (ANI): India plays its first Test match against South Africa from Saturday, but the verbal battle has begun between both sides as South African skipper Graeme Smith and his Indian counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni targetted each other on Friday.

Smith named Dhoni as South Africa's primary target in the two-Test series because he carried the bulk of the responsibility for India, and said if they attacked him successfully, they would be well placed in the series.

Smith said, "We will put pressure on Dhoni. India has everything to lose."

We see Dhoni as the key figure in their side. He obviously carries a lot of responsibility so if we can create a lot pf pressure on him may be we can open up a few chinks," added Smith.

Smith further said Dhoni, who was victorious in his first-Test as captain against South Africa in Kanpur in 2008, had grown in stature and earned respect from his opponents.

"He seems a good controlled leader of men. But we have gathered a lot of information on him from the time he made his debut as Test captain," added Smith.

Dhoni appeared calm and said, "In the absence of Dravid, Sehwag will have to bat responsibly."

"We are not worried about rankings," added Dhoni.

Dhoni laughed at the idea that this was a battle for supremacy between two young leaders who have done their reputations no harm since taking over the reins. "I am a better keeper, and he is a better opener," he said with a laugh.

"But it's not abut the captains. It's a team sport," added Dhoni.

India's claim to be the world's leading Test cricket nation will be put to the Test by South Africa and a string of injuries in the series starting on Saturday.

India dethroned South Africa to take the No. 1 slot on the International Cricket Council's Test rankings _ at a time when that honor is very much up for grabs _ and are coming off the back of a predictably comfortable 2-0 series victory over Bangladesh. (ANI)

Disgraced England captain Terry admired Tiger Woods

Published>Fri, Feb 05 10 06:49 PM

London, Feb 5(ANI): England skipper John Terry had claimed in an interview that his favourite sportsman is Tiger Woods, after being embroiled in a sex scandal.

Speaking to Football Punk magazine last September, Terry, who has previously admitting cheating on wife Toni, also tried to portray himself as a devoted family man in the interview.

"I do get time to relax, too. I really enjoy playing golf and a bit of fishing. But most of all spending time with my family, my wife and two kids, and taking them to the park. I like a Saturday evening sitting in with the wife watching the X Factor and I also like Only Fools and Horses and Friends - a lot of comedy series," The Mirror quoted Terry, as saying.

The 29-year-old went on to speak of his love of being England captain - a position now in jeopardy.

"Even when I was a kid I was quite bossy. I used to organize my team-mates and try to help them along. That's something that managers have always picked up on. That's what a captain needs to be like," Terry said.

Terry faces a dramatic showdown over his future as England captain on Friday, when he meets manager Fabio Capello at Wembley to discuss issues related to his affair with ex-girlfriend of left-back Wayne Bridge, Vanessa Perroneel. (ANI)

Umpire Benson retires, to officiate in county cricket

Published Fri, Feb 05 10 06:25 PM

Dubai, Feb 5 (PTI) Experienced umpire Mark Benson has retired from ICC''s Emirates Elite Panel on health ground and is set to take up a contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to officiate in county circuit. Benson, who umpired 27 Tests, 72 ODIs and 19 T20Is since 2006, was shortlisted for Umpire of the Year at the ICC Awards in 2007 and 2008. He also stood in the final of the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 final in Johannesburg. Benson''s contract was due to expire by the end of June but he requested to be released three months early so that he could take up a contract with the ECB. "I have enjoyed my time on the elite panel immensely. The opportunity to be part of the global game has given me memories that I will always treasure. But travel and being away from home takes its toll on the family and some warning bells have started to ring regarding my health," said Benson. "So, having thought about it carefully, I feel now is the right time for me to step down and move to a more settled and familiar environment in England. "I also want to thank the ECB for giving me the opportunity to be part of the county circuit again. I''m looking forward to the new season as much as I did when I played, and hope that I can add value with my international experience as an ICC elite umpire," he added. Benson blemish-free umpiring career was marred during the Sydney Test between Australia and India in January 2008 where he was criticised for some umpiring decisions, which went against India.

Bhullar rise to tied 8th, other Indians miss cut

Published Fri, Feb 05 10 05:55 PM

Bangkok, Feb 5 (PTI) Gaganjeet Bhullar''s second successive round of one-under 71 pushed him to tied eighth place but none of his compatriots could make the halfway cut in the Asian Tour International golf tournament here today. With his 36-hole total of two-under 142, Bhullar lie four shots off the pace but Kolkata pro Rahil Gangjee (148), rising golfer Himmat Rai (149), veteran Gaurav Ghei (154) and C Muniyappa (157) crashed out, failing to bring themselves inside the cut line which was set at 146. Playing his back nine first, Bhullar birdied the 11th and 17th but the 16th hole bogey left him one-under at the turn. Thanks to the second hole birdie, Bhullar was two-under after 14 holes before the sixth hole bogey ate into his good work. Bhullar later said he could have done better but neither his ball-striking nor his putting was up to the mark. "My ball striking wasn''t all that good today and I also missed two three-foot putts out there. It could have been easily four-under for me but there are two more days to go and I''m feeling confident," Bhullar said. "The good part is that I''m driving it well and missed only two fairways out there. I just need to get better with my putting to move up the leaderboard and I''m quite pleased with my position after two days. We''ll try to move up tomorrow to give ourselves a chance on Sunday," he said. Thailand''s Kiradech Aphibarnrat (70) shared the halfway lead with Mars Pucay (69) at six-under 138. Thai amateur Atiwit Janewattananond became the youngest player, at 14 years and 71 days, to make the cut on the Asian Tour.

FIFA denies R and B star Akon's official role in World Cup

Published>Fri, Feb 05 10 05:50 PM

London, Feb.5 (ANI): FIFA has denied that American R and B star Akon has any sort of official role at this summer's World Cup after his latest single "Oh Africa" was construed as being their anthem for the event.

The status seemed surprising as the video contained some glaring howlers - as well as Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba in cameo roles. One reveller had a Union Jack motif painted on her face, rather than the England flag, and a mural included Andrey Arshavin, even though Russia failed to qualify, reports the Daily Express.

The honour of crooning the official song will not be announced until April. But with Sony involved in the production, it is expected that it will be one of their stars who will do the honours. (ANI)

Oram help New Zealand win Napier ODI against Bangladesh

Published>Fri, Feb 05 10 05:39 PM

Napier, Feb 5(ANI): A superb all-round display from Jacob Oram helped New Zealand crush Bangladesh by 146-runs in the opening one-day international at Napier on Friday.

Oram smashed the Bangladesh attack all around the ground for a rapid 83 off only 40 balls before going on to take two wickets as the tourists slumped to defeat.

Once reeling at 135 for five in the 27th over, Oram's rout helped power New Zealand to 9-336.

His was the fourth half-century of the innings, and the most eye-catching, while Neil Broom hit a career best 71 off 73.

Oram and Broom combined to heavily punish the Bangladeshis in a quickfire seventh wicket stand of 123, the best for New Zealand against all nations, surpassing the 115 scored by Adam Parore and Lee Germon against Pakistan in 1996-97, The Age reports.

New Zealand also had key contributions from Peter Ingram, who made 69 on his ODI debut, and Ross Taylor's 51 from 52 balls.

Bangladesh's reply got off to a good start, as opening pair Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes put on 71 for the first wicket, but when Kayes (33) was caught by Brendon McCullum off Andy McKay the momentum was lost.

Skipper Daniel Vettori then claimed three for 33, Martin Guptill picked up two for seven and Oram backed up his batting with two for 33 as the visitors were bowled out for 190. (ANI)
