Dhoni loses toss, South Africa to bat; Rohit in for Laxman, Saha in for Rohit

Nagpur, Feb. 6 -- Zaheer Khan struck early on the first day of the Nagpur Test, with wickets of skipper Graeme Smith and Ashwell Prince as South Africa lost two early wickets on Saturday. After injury problems in the side and lose of toss, captain Dhoni must have felt a bit better with two early wickets. The two batsman on the the crease are Hashim Amla (9) and Jacques Kallis on the individual score of 5, with South Africa on 21 for the loss of two wickets. Earlier today, India got off to the most inauspicious of starts in the first Test against South Africa in Nagpur on Saturday, after Rohit Sharma, himself a last-minute replacement for the injured VVS Laxman, twisted his left ankle about an hour before start of play, while playing a form of touch rugby.

A very surprised wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, in the team as cover for India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's bad back, found himself being congratulated by coach Gary Kirsten and fellow debutant S Badrinath just ahead of the toss.

Saha, who became a familiar face during the Indian Premier League as part of the Kolkata Knight Riders, becomes part of a small clutch of players from Bengal to have earned the right to wear an India Test cap. He will be the first player from Bengal after Sourav Ganguly to do so. Saha incidentally, will play as a batsman only, at No. 7, as skipper Dhoni preferred to keep the gloves on. Amit Mishra, expectedly, was picked ahead of Pragyan Ojha as Harbhajan Singh's spin partner. Shortly after the Sharma mishap, India's morning misery was complete as Proteas skipper Graeme Smith gleefully indicated to his teammates that they would bat.

Teams

South Africa: Smith, Morkel, Harris, Amla, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Prince, Steyn, Boucher, Kallis, Parnell, Peterson (12th man)
