By Our Chess Correspondent Gibraltar, Feb 5 (PTI) Grand Master Sandipan Chanda and Geetha Narayanan Gopal of India finished in a nine-way tie for the top spot in the Gibtelecom Masters chess tournament here. Chanda played a fine game to beat Lela Javakhishvili of Georgia, but later missed his chances in the play-off games for the top prize when he blundered a winning position against Francisco Vallejo Pons of Spain. Having lost the first game, Chanda had to win to force an Armageddon play-off in the semifinal but the position slipped out of hands and petered in to a draw in quick time. Earlier in the day, Chanda played Dutch defense to beat Javakhishvili and set up the tiebreaker. Playing black, the then Indian came up with an excellent king side attack in the middle game to romp home. Meanwhile, Gopal was at his technical best in beating former women''s world champion Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria to also register 7.5 points. Gopal stole the show with his technique against Stefanova. It was a Ruy Lopez wherein Stefanova apparently equalised in the middle game but was outsmarted in the final part of the game. .
