Lemaitre on track for European sprint double

Christophe Lemaitre (L) of France poses with his gold medal, won in the men's 100...

Fri, Jul 30 10 08:17 AM

France's Christophe Lemaitre is hot favourite to complete a sprint double at the European championships on Friday by adding the 200 metres title to his 100 crown.

Lemaitre, the fastest man in Europe this year over both distances, looked tired in the heats but still recorded the fastest time in the semis of 20.39.

"Tomorrow I will be better physically and with Martial (Mbandjock) and David (Alerte) we can make a big splash," the 20-year-old said.

Home hopes of a medal will be shouldered by Spain's world champion Marta Dominguez in the women's steeplechase final, although Dominguez, who wears a bright pink headband when racing, complained of feeling below-par during the heats.

Her main challenger should be Russian Yuliya Zarudneva, who took silver behind the Spaniard in Berlin last year.

The longest race of the championship, the men's 50-km walk gets underway at 0535.

In the women's events, there are finals in the pole vault (1630), 400 metres (1735), hammer (1820), 400 hurdles (1940) and 800 (1950). The other men's finals are 110 hurdles (1750), 400 (1925) and 1,500 (2000).

Early exit for volatile fifth seed Gulbis in LA

Published>Fri, Jul 30 10 07:37 AM

Colombian Alejandro Falla produced the first upset at the LA Open with a gripping and occasionally tempestuous 4-6 6-3 7-6 victory over fifth-seeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis in the second round on Thursday.

Left-hander Falla came from 0-3 down in the third set and needed five match points before clinching the tiebreak 10-8 against a temperamental Gulbis at the LA Tennis Center.

Gulbis, who was repeatedly warned by the umpire for racket abuse, appeared to have the match in his grasp after taking early control in the third set but he then lost three successive games for Falla to level.

Although the Colombian failed to serve out the match when leading 5-4 and squandered a 6-4 advantage in the tiebreak, he finally wrapped up victory in two hours and 15 minutes when Gulbis netted a backhand.

"I played really well in the last set," a beaming but exhausted Falla said courtside after reaching his second ATP quarter-final of the year. "We were both tired ... and I am really happy to get through."

Asked whether he had benefited from his opponent's hot temper, Falla replied: "It helped me a lot.

"He gave me a few chances and I got them. He was playing great and serving unbelievable. I was just trying to be aggressive from the baseline because he was always dominating the point."

Gulbis, playing his first tournament since being sidelined in May by a hamstring injury he suffered at the French Open, felt he had paid the price for his recent inactivity.

FISHING LAYOFF

"If you don't fish for two months, maybe you don't fish too well," the 21-year-old told reporters with a smile. "I was so tired. It was really tough for me to go for long rallies.

"I was trying to make the points shorter and couldn't make any winners. I was running like a Spanish claycourt player. This was a joke."

Gulbis was docked one point after hurling his racket to the ground in frustration after being broken to trail 3-5 in the second set and was fortunate to escape another penalty at 8-7 down in the tiebreak.

"Whatever I would do, I would get a warning," he said. "This referee, his only fun in life is to give warnings. But if he had disqualified me in the tiebreak, that would be stupid. It wasn't the best tennis but they (the crowd) enjoyed it."

Fourth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez booked his place in the last eight with a 7-6 6-4 victory over Israeli Dudi Sela in the first match of the day.

Lopez, who clinched his second ATP career title in Johannesburg in February, blasted 12 aces on the hardcourt surface to seal the win in one hour, 37 minutes. He will next meet either American James Blake or German Benjamin Becker.

British world number four and top seed Andy Murray was scheduled to make his first appearance of the week in Thursday's late match against American qualifier Tim Smyczek.

Raina's heroics inspire UP cricket

Published>Fri, Jul 30 10 05:17 AM

The heroics of UP cricketer Suresh Raina on his Test debut at the SCC grounds today have been highly inspiring for UP cricket. Both the cricket pundits as well as the cricketers from the state feel that it is a very positive sign for the state which has produced Team India players like Mohammad Kaif, RP Singh, Piyush Chawla and Praveen Kumar.

Talking to The Indian Express, leg-spinner Piyush Chawla said, " It's not an easy task to score a century in your Test debut and that too in a match-saving century when the pressure is on your team. I could not help myself but congratulate Raina for his wonderful innings. Judging by his efforts yesterday when he was 66 not out at stumps and the keenness with which he was playing, I had this feeling that he will be able to blast a ton today."

Piyush felt that Raina had been very lucky in getting a chance to bat with Sachin Tendulkar in his Test debut. He said that Raina's century would be a source of inspiration to the UP youngsters as he excelled in a difficult situation.

Ali Hamid Zaidi who is a friend of Raina and was also a part of the UP team which won its maiden Ranji title in 2006, said, "Before leaving for Sri Lanka, Raina had said that he did not know whether he will be getting a chance to play a Test match there or not but on his part, he will work hard and concentrate on his fitness in order to be available for the team whenever he gets an opportunity. I am happy that Raina's hard work has paid off. I think the loads of ODI experience and getting Sachin's support, all helped him in scoring the 120 precious runs for the team."

Promising UP cricketer Tanmay Srivastava said Raina's innings "were a great start to a Test career. As a cricketer who is much junior to him, I have learnt how to make full use of your talent when you get the opportunity from his performance in Colombo."

Renowned cricketer Ashish Winston Zaidi who is the UP Ranji team manager said that Raina has proved that he is not only good in one-day cricket but also in Tests. "The milestone that Raina has achieved today by becoming the 12th Indian to score a century on Test debut is a big achievement for UP cricket and will be source of inspiration for the youngsters in the UP Ranji team."

Former Ranji player Ashok Bambi who is UP Ranji team selector said, "Raina got a good opportunity on a placid wicket. From the confidence which Raina displayed all through his innings, one could not believe that it was his first Test match. It is a big day for UP as well as Indian cricket."Raina's coach Deepak Sharma said he kept telling his trainees at Sports College, Lucknow throughout the day about the way Raina handled things at Sri Lanka so that they could gain from Raina's efforts.

Jubilation at homeThere was an atmosphere of jubilation at Raina's home in Ghaziabad. His elder brother Dinesh, who is a teacher said, "We are happy he got a chance to play with his 'role model' Sachin Tendulkar in his debut match.."

Ngog gives Hodgson winning start at Liverpool

Published>Fri, Jul 30 10 04:57 AM

David Ngog struck a goal in each half to give Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson a successful start as his side won 2-0 at Rabotnicki Skopje in a Europa League third qualifying round, first-leg match on Thursday.

The French striker opened the scoring after capitalising on a defensive blunder in the 18th minute and added the second just before the hour mark, steering in a crisp shot from 10 metres.

The Macedonians failed to trouble a second-string Liverpool team missing many of their World Cup players, including captain Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

The stadium's capacity was sold out a week ahead of the fixture but many of the disappointed 22,000 home fans left the fairly uneventful match well before the final whistle.

New signing Milan Jovanovic was among Liverpool's starters and the Serbia winger had a decent game on the left flank, causing problems with his speed and close control.

"Many of our young players are not used to playing in a match like this but I am very satisfied with their performance," Hodgson told a news conference.

"If we are to have a good season in the Premier League, we must use all the players we have.

"We were without 13 players tonight but the mix of young and experienced players we fielded fulfilled my expectations."

The latter stages of the match were played in near darkness, after floodlight failure at the stadium's newly-built northern tier. The return leg is at Anfield next Thursday.

Maradona fans lament end of his coaching reign

Former Argentina's national soccer team coach Diego Maradona blows kisses as he arrives to read...

Published>Fri, Jul 30 10 04:37 AM

The end of Maradona's tenure at the helm of Argentina's national team has dealt a hard blow to his fans, even though his performance as coach was a far cry from his genius as a player.

Maradona accused Argentine soccer chiefs on Wednesday of conspiring to oust him and many fans think he deserved a more dignified exit despite Argentina's disappointing showing at the World Cup.

"He is an iconic figure and deserved a more graceful farewell," said Federico Garcia, 33, who works in retail.

"Here in Argentina, we love Maradona. I think the heads of the AFA (Argentine Football Association) kicked him out in a dodgy way."

AFA's executive committee voted unanimously not to renew Maradona's contract as coach on Tuesday, citing "unbridgeable differences" with the former player, who led Argentina to World Cup victory as captain in 1986.

A solemn Maradona retaliated the following day saying he had been "betrayed" by soccer chiefs and that he had not been given enough time to shine.

"You know that my cycle lasted only for one and a half years. It was the shortest tenure in the past 35 years," he said.

In downtown Buenos Aires, many people said Maradona was "stabbed in the back" and that he was not given a proper shot at running the squad.

IN DISARRAY

"He didn't do such a bad job as coach. We haven't been beyond the quarter-finals in a World Cup since 1990, so I don't think he did much worse than others given that the team was in disarray when he took over,2 said Claudio Yago, 54, who owns a newspaper stand.

Maradona rose to stardom from a Buenos Aires slum, but his rags-to-riches story hit the rocks after he quit soccer in the 1990s and battled drug addiction, obesity and alcohol abuse.

His appointment as coach of the national team in late 2008 was a remarkable comeback, especially as he had little coaching experience.

"To be coach of the national team, you have to work seriously and that's not something Maradona's known for," said geologist Eric Cayo, 33.

Argentina's shambolic World Cup qualifying campaign sent alarm bells ringing for fans and critics alike, but convincing victories in their first four games in South Africa propelled the team into the list of tournament favourites.

Maradona's dreams of reliving World Cup glory as coach were dashed when Germany beat them 4-0 in the quarter-finals.

But he was still given a hero's welcome at home and urged to stay on by team members including World Player of the Year Lionel Messi. Even President Cristina Fernandez said no one deserved to suffer Maradona's abrupt exit from the job.

His die-hard fans say Maradona's history of beating the odds make him the best coach Argentina could ever have.

"As a coach he lacks many things, but it doesn't matter because he's "El Diego"," said Simon Lampa, a consultant for an insurance company.

"I know there are much better coaches in Argentina, but who cares? Maradona is an idol and he inspired the team, for technical staff he had advisers."

Liverpool, Juve win as Europa League heads east

Published>Fri, Jul 30 10 04:17 AM

Liverpool and Juventus, forced into the indignity of beginning their season in the Europa League qualifying rounds, both won 2-0 away on Thursday as European club football ventured into deepest Siberia.

Liverpool, playing in the Champions League's poorer cousin for the second season running after exiting the premier competition at the group stage last term, beat Rabotniki in Macedonia while the Italians overcame Ireland's Shamrock Rovers.

The former European champions were among a smattering of familiar names in Thursday's 34 third qualifying round, first leg ties which featured matches from the island of Madeira, in the Atlantic ocean, to Novosibirsk, halfway across Russia.

Portugal's Maritimo hammered Bangor City 8-2 in the former match in Funchal while the latter saw Russian Cup runners-up Sibir Novosibirsk beat Apollon Limassol 1-0 to record their first-ever win in European club competition.

Senegal's Baba Diawara and Brazilians Tcho and Danilo all notched two goals apiece for Maritimo, who scored five times in the last 15 minutes.

Captain Aleksei Medvedev scored in the 74th for Sibir, who are based more than 3,000 miles from Moscow and became the most easterly club to appear in European competition.

"The victory is the first for Sibir in Europe, and I would like to congratulate the team and the city," said coach Igor Kriushenko.

David Ngog scored in each half for Liverpool, in their first competitive match under new coach Roy Hodgson who last season led Fulham to the final of the same competition, while an Amauri double gave Juventus their win.

Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart overcame the absence of German internationals Cacau, Serdar Tasci and Sami Khedira, still on holiday after the World Cup, to triumph 3-2 at Norwegian club Molde with an 82nd minute winner from substitute Martin Harnik.

However, coach Christian Gross was not pleased with his side who twice squandered the lead. "We have to play with more focus to make it easier for ourselves," he said.

Dutch side AZ Alkmaar beat Gothenburg 2-0, Sporting Lisbon won 1-0 at Danish side Nordsjaelland while Galatasaray were held 2-2 at home by OFK Belgrade, who scored in the last 10 minutes through substitutes Milos Krstic and Nenad Injac.

There was crowd trouble in Romania when about 500 supporters of Croatia's Hajduk Split were banned from attending the match at Dinamo Bucharest following pre-game clashes.

Romania state news agency Agerpres said 25 Croat supporters and 25 Romanians clashed in front of a central shopping mall in Bucharest, with one supporter severely wounded. Dinamo won 3-1.

Seattle Sounders sign Uruguay midfielder Fernandez

Fri, Jul 30 10 03:18 AM

Seattle Sounders have signed Uruguay's World Cup midfielder Alvaro Fernandez, the Major League Soccer team said on Thursday.

The 24-year-old becomes Seattle's third "designated player", joining Sweden's Freddie Ljungberg and Switzerland's Blaise Nkufo as players paid mainly outside of the team's salary cap.

Fernandez's move to the MLS side is subject to receipt of his international transfer certificate but the midfielder, who featured in four World Cup games as unfancied Uruguay reached the semi-finals, said he was delighted with the move.

"I'm very excited to be playing in the U.S. because the football has grown a lot in the last few years and keeps getting better," said Fernandez, who was on loan to Universidad of Chile from Uruguayan club Nacional last season.

Sigi Schmid, the Sounders head coach, said: "Alvaro is a versatile player who can play in a number of midfield positions.

"He brings good energy to the game as well as World Cup experience. He can score and also set up others."

Fernandez follows New York's French forward Thierry Henry and Chicago's Mexican striker Nery Castillo as post-World Cup designated player signings for the North American league.

Taiwan's Tseng produces stunning finish, Wie in touch

Yani Tseng of Taiwan plays a shot on the 17th hole during the first round...

Published>Fri, Jul 30 10 02:58 AM

Taiwan's Yani Tseng, a two-time major winner, produced a birdie, eagle finish to share the first round lead with Australian Katherine Hull on four-under-par 68 at the women's British Open on Thursday.

With the wind easing over the Royal Birkdale links in the late afternoon, the 22-year-old Tseng managed to hit all 18 greens and by rolling home a 20-foot putt for the eagle at the long 18th she completed the day's only bogey-free round.

Hull also finished in style. A late starter, she rammed home a 60-foot putt in the late evening gloom on the final green for an eagle and her best ever start to a major championship.

American Brittany Lincicome, France's Anne-Lise Caudal and South Koreans Yoo Sun-young and Yang Amy all shot 69.

Michelle Wie, who finished joint third when she made her British Open debut at Birkdale as a 15-year-old amateur, matched Tseng's glorious finish -- she also holed from 20 feet at the last -- and stayed well in touch on 70.

World number one Shin Jiyai of South Korea was in the group on 71, but U.S. Open champion Paula Creamer started with a 74.

Tseng, world-ranked five, told reporters: "I played really solid and I just love this course.

"I just wish we played courses like this all the time. It keeps you focused and makes you think. You don't think about what's happened or what might happen, you have to concentrate on every single shot."

Hull's only win on the LPGA Tour came in the 2008 Canadian women's Open and she has never finished higher than 40th in her five previous British Opens.

"I had a long talk with my caddy last week and decided I had become a little lazy with my routine," said the 28-year-old.

Wie, still to fulfil her early promise, said: "It was a good day. I bogeyed the first but stayed patient and had lots of birdie chances. The finish was great."

Howell leads Irish Open after a 64

Published>Fri, Jul 30 10 12:56 AM

Darren Clarke carded a five-under-par 66 in the Irish Open first round on Thursday to maintain the good form that could land him a surprise spot in the European Ryder Cup team in October.

But his round still left him two strokes behind the leader, a reinvigorated David Howell.

Northern Irishman Clarke has been chosen as one of three non-playing vice-captains by Europe captain Colin Montgomerie but he could yet make the team for Celtic Manor.

"I will play if I qualify and I think Monty will want me to," Clarke told reporters.

Leader Howell enjoyed a new lease of life. The successful 2004 and 2006 Ryder Cup player had the second-best round of his career following a slump that saw him plummet to 156th on Europe's 2009 money-list.

The 35-year-old Englishman, blighted by injuries and bad form, chipped in for one of his five birdies and claimed an eagle on the 16th in a blemish-free round.

"I've been dying to get off to a good start," Howell told reporters. "I've been working hard and persevering but it's not been paying off."

Australian left-hander Richard Green and Irishman Damien McGrane share second place after 65s.

Britain's Robert Rock, who lost a playoff to Shane Lowry here when the Irishman was an amateur last year, posted a 65 but was later disqualified for signing for a wrong score.

Italian teenager Matteo Manassero ran up a two-shot penalty on the first for kicking sand in a bunker in a round of 72.

Briton Justin Rose's hopes of qualifying automatically for the Ryder Cup team suffered a blow with a 74.

Mohun Bagan remembers 1911 IFA Shield win

Published>Fri, Jul 30 10 12:20 AM

Kolkata, July 29 (IANS) An evening of songs and remembrances was the highlight of the centenary celebrations of Mohun Bagan's historic IFA Shield triumph as the club saluted the footballers of that epic match by conferring on them posthumously its highest honour 'Mohun Bagan Ratna'.

Families of nine of the 'Immortal eleven' were present at the glittering star-studded programme organised at the club tent as Governor M.K. Narayanan paid glowing tributes to Mohun Bagan. 'The name Mohun Bagan strikes a chord in each of us Indians. You don't have to be from Kolkata or West Bengal to understand the greatness of this club.'

Describing himself as an ardent Mohun Bagan fan, Narayanan referred to the club's derbies against arch-rivals East Bengal. 'Having been a fan of Mohun Bagan we always followed Mohun Bagan-East Bengal rivalry. We always supported Mohun Bagan. We felt bad whenever East Bengal won.'

Describing the 121-year-old Mohun Bagan as a heritage club, Narayanan said the IFA Shield final victory on July 29, 1911, had stirred the entire nation then fighting to shake off British rule.

The club celebrates the day every year as 'Mohun Bagan Day' to commemorate the win.

While relatives of nine of the players were present, the club authorities could not trace any descendant of Kanu Roy. Sibdas Bhaduri, skipper of the team that defeated British army side East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 in the title clash on this day in 1911, has been given the honour earlier. Emotion, happiness and pride were visible on the faces of the family members who took the honour from Narayanan and the club's former star footballers as also ministers.

'I feel so proud. I can't express my feelings,' said Soumyadeep Chattopadhyay, grandson of reverend Sudhir Chattopadhyay, a key player of the team.

The launch of a music album of the soon-to-be-released Bengali movie 'Egaro' (The Eleven) that tells the fascinating story of the epic victory was another highlight of the evening that saw former footballers like Chuni Goswami, Sailen Manna and P. K. Banerjee discussing the significance of the 1911 victory and how it had inspired the country's freedom movement.

Besides, three exhibition games involving junior and former players, artists and the media were played in the afternoon.

Business as usual for birthday boy Alonso

Ferrari Formula One driver Fernando Alonso of Spain arrives at the Hungaroring circuit near Budapest...

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 11:58 PM

Fernando Alonso shrugged off criticism of his Ferrari team tactics and made clear it was business as usual at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Thursday.

With conversation at the Hungaroring still dominated by the 'team orders' controversy that erupted at Hockenheim after Ferrari were fined $100,000 for telling Felipe Massa to let Alonso through to win, the Spaniard refused to be drawn into further debate on his 29th birthday.

"I've nothing really to say about any team, any polemic, any opinion from anyone," he said in English when asked whether, if he won the Formula One title, he would have won it fairly.

"There are many opinions, many things have been said in the last couple of days.

"The only important thing for us is that the car is competitive and we can do well here in Hungary.

"If other people have opinions we respect them, but we are concentrating on our job," added the double world champion after answering questions from Italian reporters before a session with the Spanish media.

Alonso was given a rough ride after last Sunday's race, mainly by the British media and to the anger of many of his supporters in Spain, but Thursday's line of questioning was less heated if still direct.

He avoided a question on whether he had ever been involved in team orders during his ill-fated year with Lewis Hamilton at McLaren in 2007 and said Ferrari did not have a number one or a number two driver.

"What happened is in the past, and we have nothing to say any more. We said everything in Germany, our president as well," he declared.

Asked by a radio reporter about the fans' reaction, Alonso suggested that the reported outrage was far from universal.

"I arrived today in Hungary and the airport was full, the hotel was full of people cheering for us, and that's what I've seen so far," he said. "For the moment I have only seen those ones."

"I'm still the same and I will fight, as always, for the best things possible, my team, for the sport, and hopefully I will always do well in my career," said Alonso of his attitude.

"As drivers we are not able to decide anything. We will let the people who know better than us decide what is best for our sport. I'm sure they will decide whatever they think is the best. We just drive the cars."

Santosh Trophy: Goa, Punjab win

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 11:38 PM

Kolkata, July 29 (IANS) Goa and Punjab rode on second half strikes to begin their quarter final group A campaign at the 64th Santosh Trophy inter-state football competition with identical solitary goal wins here Thursday

While substitute Cavin Lobo found the target for Goa against Karnataka, Punjab logged full points against Services, courtesy a Rohit Kumar conversion.

Lobo, introduced in the early minutes of the second session, made his presence felt and came near scoring at least on three occasions. However, he managed to finally score the winner in injury time with a power-packed right foot long ranger that gave no chance to Karnataka custodian Nagendra, who otherwise had a good day.

The goalkeeper blocked Lobo's effort just after the stroke of an hour eight mintues before the striker's firm shot crashed into the bar and seemed to have dropped over the line. But the linesman signalled a goal kick.

Karnataka also got a couple of opportunities. In the early minutes, Ngurnei Lal's header off a flag kick hit the post, while Satish Kumar failed to do the finishing act late in the second half.

Hosts and last year's runners-up Bengal play their tournament lung opener opposite Delhi, while Tamil Nadu clash with Mizoram in Group B quarter final matches Friday.

Barrichello hits out at team orders

Williams Formula One driver Rubens Barrichello of Brazil talks with his team during the second...

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 11:18 PM

Formula One drivers must be allowed to race each other freely and if that means missing out on the title by a single point then so be it, Rubens Barrichello said on Thursday.

The Brazilian was twice overall runner-up at Ferrari, winning nine races in four years with the Italian team compared to the five titles and 72 victories chalked up by Michael Schumacher in that time.

Barrichello was a regular victim of 'team orders', which were banned in 2002 after worldwide uproar caused by Ferrari ordering him to let Schumacher win in Austria after the Brazilian had led the entire race.

With Ferrari fined $100,000 last weekend and facing possible further punishment for ordering Brazilian Felipe Massa to let team mate Fernando Alonso win in Germany, Barrichello said team orders had to be stamped out.

"I just think that we should do something to stop this thing," he told a news conference at the Hungarian Grand Prix, his 299th race.

"I would not feel good if they tell me 'We will give you this and it will make you faster than the other one and then you will win'.

"I don't like that. I never did. That's why I had to make changes in my life and changed teams," added the 38-year-old, who left Ferrari for Honda at the end of 2005 and won two races for champions Brawn last year before joining Williams.

"It is in the hands of the top people to change that," he added. "You should be allowed to race, what is the problem? If you don't win the championship by one point so be it.

"You had your chance. You win the championship by one point because somebody let you win. What is the point?"

Massa missed out on the 2008 title by a single point to McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

Barrichello said he would bring his own children up with a strong message of fair play.

"If I had to be a bad guy to be world champion, I don't care for that," he said. "I will teach my boys the same way my father taught me. I'm happy with that. That's my view."

'Winning machine' Mourinho is a threat, says Ibrahimovic

Barcelona's Zlatan Ibrahimovic attends a news conference prior to their friendly soccer match against Valerenga...

Thu, Jul 29 10 10:58 PM

Zlatan Ibrahimovic fears his former coach Jose Mourinho will create a Real Madrid team capable of ending Barcelona's recent dominance of Spanish soccer.

Ibrahimovic, the Barcelona striker who endured a patchy first season at the Nou Camp, played for Mourinho at Inter Milan between 2008 and 2009.

"Mourinho is one of the best coaches in the world," Ibrahimovic told reporters on Thursday, ahead of Barcelona's pre-season friendly against Norwegian side Valerenga.

"When he comes to a new club he will build it up to be a winning machine. It will be difficult to beat (Real), but we are the best team in the world."

Barcelona won the Spanish league in 2009 and 2010, and the Champions League in 2009.

Ibrahimovic, the Sweden international who scored 16 goals in his first season at Barcelona, said he expects to improve in his second, and that the arrival of David Villa should not put his place under threat.

He admitted he had discussed his situation with coach Pep Guardiola after Barcelona bought Villa, Spain's top scorer at the World Cup, from Valencia.

"Every time I change clubs, I think the first year is always the (most) difficult one, and from all the clubs that I've played in, my best first year has been in Barcelona," Ibrahimovic said.

"He (Guardiola) says I'm important, and then I take it as I will play. If you're not important, you don't play."

Ibrahimovic said Villa was one of the world's best players who would help Barcelona next season. "With Villa on the team we will be even stronger and have even better chance to win the Champions League," he said.

The meet is in its third edition, but like in the past, has attracted very few top athletes of Asia.

Tintu, the talented prodigy of P.T Usha, ran her personal best clocking 2:01.24 seconds to win the gold. She was ahead of her season compatriot Sinimol Paulose (2:04.58) and Ayako Jinouchi of Japan (2:05.51 secs), who won the silver and bronze respectively. The 21-year-old Tintu surpassed her previous best of 2:01.92.

Tintu could have timed better had there been someone to push her, said Usha.

'She was quite fast in the first 400 metres, but then slowed down. You need someone to push you. It was as if she was was running alone. She could do better,' Usha said with Luka by her side.

Usha said she was confident that Luka would be at her best in the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games in November in China.

Tintu clocked 2:01.61 secs at the National Athletics Championship at Bangalore in May.

'She began the season with a performance close to her best and today she got her personal best. She has immense potential and she will only improve. She is very hard working,' Usha said.

'She will be competing in at least two events before the Commonwealth Games. She needs more exposure, more competition,' she added.

Mayookha, who came back this season after being out for

one-and-a-half years with an ankle injury, produced her best with a jump of 6.64 meters to win the gold. Yuliya Tarasova (6.49m) of Uzbekistan and India's M.A. Prajusha (6.30m) came second and third.

Mayookha surpassed her best of 6.49m she achieved at the Bangalore nationals.

'It is not easy to perform when you are coming back from injury. I have done well in the last two tournaments and it is a good sign for me,' Mayookha said.

India's star discus thrower Vikas Gowda, who is based in US, won the gold, but was nowhere near his best.

Gowda, who made a come back with a performance of 63.22m this season, said he was disappointed with his performance.

'I am not at all happy. It was slippery after the rain and I could not give my best,' said Gowda, who was participating here after three years. 'I will go back to US and train there, participate in a few tournaments and try to reach my peak at the Commonwealth Games.'

The discus throw event was an all-Indian affair with Arjun Singh (47.54m) and Arpinder Singh 47.22 winning the silver and bronze medal respectively.

In the women's 100 metres hurdles, Gayathri Govindraj won the silver by clocking 13.82 seconds behind Kazakh Anastassiya Soprunova, who won the gold in 13.66 secs. The bronze went to Uzbekistan's Anastasiya Proshkina (13.84 secs).

Hari Shankar Roy won the bronze for India in the men's high jump with a lead of 2.15m.

In the women's 400 metres, India's Mandeep Kaur won the gold in 52.29secs and her compatriot Juana Murmu took bronze with 53.17 secs. Julia Gavrilova of Kazakhstan took the silver in 52.93 secs.

In the men's 800 metres, Jospeh Sajeesh of India won the gold (1:48.92) while Ghamanda Ram (1:50.25) took the silver.

In the javelin throw, India had a 1-2 finish with Kashinath Naik (74.21m) winning the gold and Samarjeet Singh (72.49m) the silver.

The men's long jump was an all-Indian affair with Ankit Sharma winning the gold (7.61m), Maha Singh (7.50) the silver and Harikrishanan (7.50m) the bronze.

In the women's shot put, Seema Antil, who has been stuggling of late, finished fourth (13.81m).

Tired Lemaitre steps up sprint double bid

Christophe Lemaitre of France reacts after his race in the men's 200m heats at the...

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 10:18 PM

France's new European 100 metres champion Christophe Lemaitre showed no ill effects from a lack of sleep, starting his bid for a second gold with a comfortable victory in his 200 metres heat on Thursday.

Lemaitre took the 100 title late on Wednesday but appeared no worse for his exertions as he pulled away in the straight to qualify for the semi-finals in 20.64 seconds.

"I didn't sleep much so it was hard to wake up this morning," the quietly spoken 20-year-old told reporters.

"I told myself that it would be difficult this morning. I was a bit scared.

"The legs are working. I'm in good spirits and that bodes well for what's still to come," added Lemaitre, the first Frenchman to win the European 100 title for 48 years.

The 200 title, to be decided on Friday, will have a new home after 2006 champion Francis Obikwelu of Portugal did not start his heat because of a muscle strain.

A Portuguese team spokesman said they were hopeful the sprinter would be fit for the relay.

Norway's Jaysuma Saidy Ndure, sixth in the 100 final, was the fastest qualifier over the longer sprint in 20.60. The semi-finals are later on Thursday (1755 GMT).

Overnight leader Oleksiy Kasyanov withdrew from the decathlon after an undisclosed injury meant he was unable to run the 110 metres hurdles, the first of Thursday's disciplines.

Lithuanian Darius Draudvila had a 49-point lead over Olympic silver medallist Andrei Krauchanka of Belarus after seven of the 10 events.

The decathlon continues with the pole vault, javelin and final event 1,500 metres (1910).

OLIJAR DISQUALIFIED

Stanislav Olijar's 110 metres hurdles title defence came to an abrupt end when the Latvian was disqualified from his heat for a false start.

Hungary's Daniel Kiss was the quickest of the qualifiers for Friday's semis with a time of 13.44. Europe's leading hurdler this year, Petr Svoboda of the Czech Republic also won his heat in 13.50.

World bronze medallist Renaud Lavillenie needed two attempts at the automatic qualifying height of 5.65 metres before safely going through to Saturday's pole vault final.

Lavillenie, unbeaten in nine competitions outdoors this season, led a trio of French qualifiers as Romain Mesnil and Damiel Dossevi also went through.

Russia's Nadezhda Alekhina sailed out to 14.93 metres on her final attempt of the triple jump qualifying to record the longest distance of the competition and reach Saturday's final.

The men's triple jump medals will be decided later on Thursday. Favourite for the title is France's world indoor record holder Teddy Tamgho, who jumped 17.98 metres at a Diamond League meeting in June.

The women's javelin (1840) and 100 metres (1945) and men's high jump (1630) finals also take place on Thursday.

Modi seeks attendance sheet of disciplinary comittee meetings

Thu, Jul 29 10 09:52 PM

Mumbai, Jul 29 (PTI) Suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi today asked the Cricket Board to provide him attendance sheet of the recent disciplinary committee meetings held in Mumbai and Delhi to ascertain whether the presence of BCCI secretary N Srinivasan had been recorded in it. "We may clearly inform you that (apart from being entitled to a copy of the same) we are particularly interested in ascertaining whether the ''attendance sheet'' records the presence of Mr N Srinivasan, secretary BCCI, who was present at the hearing before the Disciplinary Committee," Modi said in a letter addressed to BCCI Chief Administration Officer Ratnakar Shetty. "Mr Srinivasan was present at the venue; sat in a corner of the room; heard the arguments advanced on behalf of our client; and on several occasions came to the main table to instruct Ratnakar Shetty, the representative of BCCI," the letter said. "We refer to 1) the e mail dated 28th July, 2010 (5.26 pm) addressed by Mr Mehmood Abdi (the Constituted Attorney of our client Mr Lalit K Modi) requesting for the ''attendance sheet'' of hearing dated 27th July, 2010 before the Disciplinary Committee; 2) your reply e-mail dated 28th July, 2010 (5.47 pm) stating ''I will forward your request for attendance at DC meeting to Mr Arun Jaitley and get back to you at the earliest," it added. Modi wondered as to why BCCI had referred his earlier request for the attendance sheet to Arun Jaitley, who is a part of the three-member panel constituted by the Board to conduct the proceedings against him. "We are at a loss to understand why a request for a copy of the ''attendance sheet'' (which is a document which all persons who attended or were present at the hearing before the Disciplinary Committee are required to sign) is required to be referred to Mr Jaitley. We are also baffled at why the BCCI should be hesitant in acceding to such a simple request. "The request made was straightforward and did not require the involvement of the Disciplinary Committee or any of its members," the letter said. "It would appear that the BCCI has reasons for not supplying the same. If that be so, the BCCI should say so clearly and not attempt to involve the Disciplinary Committee or its members in its ''stalling operation''. The Disciplinary Committee is a body discharging an adjudicatory role and function and involving the Disciplinary Committee and/or its member was both improper and unnecessary," it added.

Century on debut proves Raina is a Test material: Coach

Thu, Jul 29 10 09:22 PM

Lucknow, Jul 29 (PTI) Delighted after his ward scored a century in his Test debut today, Suresh Raina''s coach Dipak Sharma today said by scoring the ton his protege has proved that he has what it takes to be a permanent member of the Indian five-day squad. Raina scored 120 in the first innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka and thus became only the 12 Indian cricketer to score a Test century on debut. "Suresh (Raina) had given evidence of his talent and immaculate skills in the shorter versions of the game. But his century against Sri Lanka in trying circumstances has shown that he has the technique and temperament to gain a permanent slot in the Test side," said Sharma, who was his coach in the Sports College here. In Ghaziabad, Raina''s family of four siblings and parents have visited a temple to thank the almighty for his success. "The entire family is elated with Suresh''s showing and visited the temple this afternoon," said his elder brother Dinesh Raina, adding it was a matter of immense pleasure for him to see his younger sibling bat with Sachin Tendulkar. "It was my dream to see Suresh bat alongwith Sachin Tendulkar in Tests which has come true today," Dinesh said. Both Sharma and Dinesh feel that Raina should have got a call in the Test side long ago. "It goes on to show the strength of Indian team. A person of the calibre of Suresh had to wait for 98 ODIs before he got a chance in Tests, that too because of the illness of Yuvraj Singh," the duo said. "If anything this delay has only added on to his determination and instilled in him the killer instinct," Sharma said. "During the college days here between 1999-2000 to 2003-2004 , he had shown great promise and he has honed his skills well over the years in his march towards perfection," Sharma said. Happy that Raina has maintained his contact with the Sports College here, his coach said the left-hander''s performance has always been a motivation for the youngsters of the college. "It is not easy to reach his stature but the boys are euphoric and had been discussing the innings the whole day," Sharma said fielding.

Defending champions Goa beat Karnataka 1-0

Thu, Jul 29 10 08:58 PM

Kolkata, July 29 (PTI) Substitute Cavin Lobo scored an injury time goal to help reigning champions Goa pip Karnataka 1-0 and begin their title defence positively in the quarterfinal league of the 64th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here. Lobo, who replaced Milagres Gonsalves in the 55th minute, scored the decisive goal in the 90+1st minute to help Goa pocket three points in Group A, which also has Punjab and Services. Karnataka had an opportunity to take the uppherhand in the third minute but forward Ngurneilal Hmar''s header came off the horizontal cross bar. Soon, both the sides switched to playing watchfully with the first-half resulting in a goalless stalemate. New to the conditions, Goa struggled to find their rhythm and their turning point came only in the hour-mark when the Sporting Clube de Goa midfielder was brought in by coach Mariano Dias. Lobo had some fine attempts but only to see his strikes go in vain with either luck or pluck favouring Karnataka. He got at least three fine chances but the ball hit the horizontal bar or Karnataka goalkeeper Nagendra became the stumbling block. But in the dying moments, Lobo struck a fine angular shot beyond Nagendra''s reach to hand his side a fine win.

Abbas overlooked for Pakistan's CWG and Asian Games squads

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 08:46 PM

Karachi, July 29 (IANS) Pakistan's hockey selectors Thursday ignored veteran drag-flick ace Sohail Abbas for the preliminary squad for this year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi and Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

A 25-man provisional squad was named by the national selection committee for a series of training camps ahead of the two major events.

The seasoned defender, who holds the record for the highest number of goals in international hockey, apparently paid the price for skipping a training camp earlier this summer.

However, Pakistan's chief selector Hanif Khan tried to make it clear that Sohail's omission had nothing to do with his decision to skip the training camp.

'We haven't selected Sohail Abbas because we don't need him any more,' said Hanif, an Olympian. Hanif stressed that Pakistan has a number of youngsters capable enough to fill in for Sohail.

'We have found some good young boys on our team's Europe tour especially Muhammad Tauseeq who converted penalty corners in matches against Holland and Spain earlier this month,' said Hanif.

Meanwhile, Sohail who recently returned home from Dhaka after featuring in the Bangladesh League is featuring in the Quaid-e-Azam Gold Cup Hockey Tournament - a major domestic event - in Karachi. He has been in prolific form, scoring four goals in two matches in the event so far.

Preliminary squad: Salman Akbar (Lahore), Imran Shah (HBL), Zeeshan Ashraf (NBP), Muhammad Imran (Army), Muhammad Irfan (PIA), Waseem Ahmad (WAPDA), Muhammad Rashid (Navy), Fareed Ahmad (HBL), Muhammad Tauseeq (NBP), Kashif Javed (NBP), Rehan Butt (WAPDA), Shakeel Abbasi (SSGC), Abdul Haseem Khan (NBP), Shafqat Rasool (PIA), Muhammad Rizwan (Army), Muhammad Waqas (WAPDA), Muhammad Umar Bhutta (HBL), Imran Butt (PIA), Muhammad Khalid Bhatti (HBL), Tasawar Abbas (Police), Abdul Ghaffar (Customs), Waqas Akbar (PIA), Muhammad Zubair (PIA), Shahbaz Ali (HBL) and Mohsin Bilal (PQA).

Tendulkar gives thumbs down to UDRS, prefers Hot Spot

Thu, Jul 29 10 08:22 PM

T V Sriram Colombo, Jul 29 (PTI) The Umpire Decision Review System may have its share of supporters but Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar today gave a thumbs down to UDRS, saying he was not fully convinced with the controversial referral system. Tendulkar said instead of UDRS, he was more in favour of the usage of new ''Hot-Spot'' technology, which is an infra-red imaging system used in cricket to determine whether the ball has struck the batsman, bat or pad. "I am not fully convinced with the referral system (UDRS). When I was here last time I was not convinced with many decisions. I did not feel comfortable, it was an experiement which I felt," Tendulkar told reporters here after notching up his fifth double hundred in Tests. "I would rather go with the Hot Spot because that establishes the contact between the bat and the bowl. That it is far better system according to me. The Hot Spot is much better," he said. The UDRS has recently got some supporters in Australian captain Ricky Ponting, Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan and former ICC umpire Rudi Koertzen, who called for the use of the system in every Test match. Tendulkar guided India with a classy 203 and helped his side end day four of the second Test at 669 for nine in reply to Sri Lanka''s first innings score of 642 for four declared at a placid Sinhalese Sports Club wicket. "When I was in the middle, it was important to go for a partnership and I am happy the way we played well. I was tempted to play my shots but at that time the match was at a critical situation and we had to hang in there," said the champion batsman. With over 1300 runs scored in four days at the loss of just 13 wickets, he said the SSC wicket was not an ideal pitch for Test cricket. "From a batsmen''s point of view the pitch is definitely the best in the world. It is a batting paradise but it is not result oriented. It is a tough track to bowl on," Tendulkar said. Although he is 37, Tendulkar is still going strong and the right-hander said it is his love for the game that keeps him fresh and rejuvenated all the time. "I am enjoying every bit of it. I don''t count the number of runs that I scored. It is nice to score runs and I am enjoying as much being in the middle as it is being in the past. It is fantastic," he said. More PTI TVS SSC MRM

Rs.11,490 crore spent on Games: Government

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 08:16 PM

New Delhi, July 29 (IANS) The expenditure being incurred for the Commonwealth Games is around Rs.11,490 crore, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister M.S.Gill Thursday told parliament.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha to nominated member Mani Shankar Aiyar, Gill gave the detailed breakup of the expenditure.

'The central government has approved funds to the tune of Rs.2,394 crore to the organising committee for the conduct of Commonwealth Games 2010, including for overlays, timing, scoring and result system and sports equipment,' he said.

An amount of Rs.4,460 crore has been approved for upgradation, renovation and creation of sports infrastructure, while Rs.2,800 crore have been provided through ministry of home affairs for upgradation of sports and city infrastructure.

In reply to another question, the sports minister said that all Commonwealth Games venues were complete except a weight lifting stadium at Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex which will be completed by July 31 and a table tennis stadium at the Yamuna Sports Complex which will be completed by Aug 15.

Both central and Delhi governments have been attacked on escalating cost of the Commonwealth Games. Slamming the government, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party said that the cost incurred for the Commonwealth Games was to the tune of $17.5 billion, compared to $1 billion incurred in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

Even Aiyar, a former sports and youth affairs minister in the first United Progressive Alliance government, recently termed the games a wastage of money.

Torres says he's committed to spearheading Liverpool's revival

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 08:06 PM

Indian athletes to lose on home advantage: CGF CEO Hooper

Thu, Jul 29 10 07:56 PM

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Delay in the completion of the Commonwealth Games venues will rob the Indian athletes of the vital home advantage, Commonwealth Games Federation CEO Mike Hooper said today. Hooper, who visited the Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium, venue for Games'' opening and closing ceremonies, said that players are losing out on getting a hang of the stadiums and that will hurt India''s medal prospects. "They are going to lose on vital home advantage. They should have been given access earlier. Their medal prospect will get affected," Hooper said. "Venue handovers have been missed on various occasions and that''s not a new thing. But I''ll say, don''t look back, look ahead. It''s time to put our foot right. It''s time to look ahead," said Hooper. Delhi had promised that most facilities for the Games would be completed by the end of last year. That deadline was extended to March 31 and then to June 30. Three pivotal projects - the main Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, the aquatic complex and the athletes'' village - all missed the June deadline. On the issue of a young swimmer Priyanka Banerjee tripping on a loose grill and hurting herself at a Test event at the Talkatora stadium, now called S P Mukherjee stadium, Hooper said such incidents need to be redressed immediately. "I heard that a swimmer hurt her ankle. You need to look into all those things. Correct it," he said. The Test event, National Federation Cup, was held to demonstrate that the swimming complex was Games-ready. Hooper, however, refused to react on the Central Vigilance Committee report which pointed at rampant corruption in the construction of stadiums. "I have no idea about that. I heard that CVC is looking into it. It''s not a matter with CGF," he said. The CVC report cites instances of corrupt practices in awarding stadium construction contracts to companies. The report clearly points at rampant corruption in the contracts. On the remodelled Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium, which is holding a three-day Asian Athletics meet, Hooper said, "It''s an impressive venue with lot of improvement made in 6-8 weeks. It''s going well." Gurki Shergill best Indian at Brunei Open golf

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 07:36 PM

Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei), July 29 (IANS) Three birdies in the last five holes saw Indian golfer Gurki Shergill come in with a round of five-under 66 that placed him tied fifth at the end of the first round in the Brunei Open here Thursday.

Shergill, who won his first pro title last year on the Indian Tour, is the best placed among the ten Indians in the fray in the tournament, which heralded the start of the second half of the season for the Asian Tour. Shergill played from the tenth and went around the front stretch of the course in four-under 31.

Thailand's Thammanoon Srirot produced a superb chip-in birdie on the last hole to equal the course record of nine-under-par 62 in the first round. He had a flawless round with nine birdies to open up a two-stroke lead over Bangladesh's Siddikur who was one of two players to shoot a hole-in-one at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

The next best Indian was Gaganjeet Bhullar at two-under 69 in tied 28th place. Anirban Lahiri, looking for his maiden Asian Tour triumph, shot a one-under 70 in 38th place, the same as C. Muniyappa, the Hero Honda Indian Open champion.

Digvijay Singh (71) in tied 62nd place, Himmat Rai (73) in 91st place, Baaz Mann and Amandeep Johl (77 each) in tied 131st place and Rahil Gangjee (78) in 134th place were the other Indians in the fray.

South Korea's Lee Sung and Australia's Adam Groom, who shot two eagles, took a share of third placing on 65s while South Africa's Jbe Kruger, Shergill and Thailand's Panuwat Muenlek were a stroke back in tied fifth place.

Thammanoon, a five-time Asian Tour winner, brilliantly made the turn in 29 before adding three birdies on the back nine. He was delighted to end his round on a high note when he sank his chip from 25 yards out on the 18th hole.

Chinese Taipei's Sung Mao-chang blasted the first ace on the 14th hole but signed a 74 at the $300,000 Asian Tour full field tournament.

Manchester United Cup: Odds against Lajong

Thu, Jul 29 10 06:56 PM

Shillong, Jul 29 (PTI) On the eve of the Lajong Under-15 team leaving for the Manchester United Premier Cup in England, the north-eastern club''s secretary Larsing Ming said odds are heavily against the Indian boys due to lack of proper infrastructure for training. "The boys will be playing against the best teams in the world. It will be extremely difficult for the boys. But they will have an opportunity for exposure and a good learning experience," Ming said. He said the boys were picked up just last December and they will be competing against giants like Barcelona FC, New Castle United, FC Porto and Orlando Pirates who have been training in world class infrastructure. "We hope the experience will help give good foundation to the mind, body and spirit of the boys," Ming said. The Lajong boys will leave for the week-long Manchester United Premier Cup tomorrow. The U-15 team was selected for the prestigious trophy after they defeated JCT 3-2 via tie-breaker at the India leg of the Cup in Panaji on February last. Sixty four teams from all over the country had participated in the Nike-Manchester United Premier Cup (under-15) India-leg football tourney. Today, Shillong Press Club organised a small function to see off the team. Shillong Press Club president David Laitphlang said the Lajong team has started a revolution in the sports in the region and hoped that the young team would bring laurels to the country. Tendulkar helped in overcoming nervousness: Raina

Thu, Jul 29 10 06:26 PM

Colombo, July 29 (PTI) After notching up a century on his debut, Suresh Raina today said he was nervous when he took guard but Sachin Tendukar''s pep talk helped him overcome the initial jitters. Raina with his 120-run knock against Sri Lanka also became the first Indian cricketer to have scored a hundred in all formats of the game. "Yes I was nervous when I came to bat but Sachin said ''just enjoy yourself, this moment will never come, you are playing your first Test match, just enjoy," Raina said after fourth day''s play. With Tendulkar, Raina raised a record 256-run partnership for the fifth wicket and said he realised a long time dream by batting alongside the legend. "By God''s grace I got this opportunity and it was my dream to bat with Sachin and today it came true. He said ''you are winning matches for the side in one-dayers, do well in Test also and enjoy''," he said. Raina came in the side in place of unwell Yuvraj Singh and made full use of the opportunity.

Jat protesters threaten to disrupt CW Games

Thu, Jul 29 10 02:18 PM

New Delhi, July 28 -- More than 4,000 members of the Jat community attempted to storm the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee office on Wednesday afternoon but were prevented by the police. The protesters were demanding OBC status for reservation in government jobs. The Jat Mahasabha, which is spearheading the protest, threatened to use all means to disrupt the sporting extravaganza. Clad in white kurta pyjama, turbans and wielding lathis, most of them came out in large numbers on the roads, disrupting traffic in Connaught Place and nearby areas for some time in the evening. Taking lessons from the farmer's rally earlier this year in which the protesters went on a rampage in Connaught Place and nearby areas, the police did not give the Jat members permission to march from Ramlila Maidan to Jantar Mantar. A posse of 800 policemen had been deployed in and around the protest venues to prevent any untoward incident. "We made all the arrangements and blocked their exit from all sides. We had information they could storm the Commonwealth Games office so we had cordoned off the area. Even 10, Janpath (residence of United Progressive Alliance chairperson) was cordoned off and we did not let them move from Jantar Mantar," said Shankar Dash, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi). The protesters who had earlier stopped water supply to Delhi had threatened to disrupt Commonwealth Games if their demands for reservation in central services were not met. They marched towards the Games headquarters from their protest site few hundred metres away at Jantar Mantar. However, a large number of police personnel stopped the protesters.

Raina 12th Indian to get Test hundred on debut

Thu, Jul 29 10 02:08 PM

Colombo, July 29 (PTI) Suresh Raina today became the 12th Indian cricketer to score a Test century on debut with a fluent 120-run knock against Sri Lanka in the ongoing second Test here. Raina''s century comes nine years after Virender Sehwag achieved the similar feat against South Africa. The diminutive left-hander, who came in place of an unwell Yuvraj Singh for the second Test against Sri Lanka, made full use of the opportunity to make a case for himself in the lower-middle order of the team. Raina got to the three-figure mark by elegantly driving paceman Dammika Prasad to off-side boundary. He took 192 balls to complete his century. His knock came off 228 balls overall with 12 fours and two sixes. he was dismissed when Ajantha Mandis had him caught by Kumar Sangakkara at short midwicket in the 141st over of the Indian innings. The Uttar Pradesh batsman has been doing well consistently in the shorter version of the game and even led the team in a tri-series in Zimbabwe. Raina''s innings today came at a crucial juncture as India were chasing a massive total of 642 to stay afloat in the Test match. Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin, who also scored a Test hundred on debut in 1984 against England in Kolkata, lavished praise on Raina. "Today my own memories of a debut-century came back after 20-25 years. I hope he scores more and matures as a Test batsman soon. He is an attacking and stylish player and hope lot of runs come from him in future," Azharuddin, now a Congress MP from Moradabad, told reporters. A list of Indian players who scored a Test century on debut: 1) Lala Amarnath 118 v England (1933) 2) Deepak Shodhan 110 v Pakistan (1952) 3) AG Kripal Singh 100* v New Zealand (1955) 4) Abbas Ali Baig 112 v England (1959) 5) Hanumant Singh 105 v England (1964) 6) Gundappa Viswanath 137 v Australia (1969) 7) Surinder Amarnath 124 v New Zealand (1976) 8) Mohammed Azharuddin 110 v England (1984) 9) Praveen Amre 103 v South Africa (1992) 10) Sourav Ganguly 131 v England (1996) 11) Virender Sehwag 105 v South Africa (2001) 12) Suresh Raina 120 v Sri Lanka (2010).

Akram says 'knee-jerk' reactions bane of Pak cricket

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 01:54 PM

Lahore, July 29(ANI): Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has called for stability in the national team, and urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to stick with newly-appointed skipper Salman Butt.

"Shahid Afridi was appointed for a year and out of the blue he disappeared after one Test. That was a joke," Wasim wrote in an article for ESPN.

About the idea of recalling former captains Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf, he said that it would only hamper the team's progress.

"There is a lot of hue and cry about Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf, but I think it's time to move on. This team doesn't want those two players, the cricket board doesn't want them," Akram said.

"Move on, have a new captain, have new players, you'll probably lose one or two, but eventually in a year's time your team will be stronger."

"Salman is confident, a good leader and he's got guts. I have a feeling if he doesn't do well against England they will probably bring those two players back and bring in some other captain. That's the problem with Pakistan cricket," he added.

Akram was also of the opinion that Butt should back youngsters in the Test series against England, starting on Thursday at Trent Bridge.

"It's like what's happening in the country as a whole, it's part of the culture and cricket is the same," he added. (ANI)

Day hockey matches in CWG crazy, disrepectful: Charlesworth

Thu, Jul 29 10 01:22 PM

Melbourne, Jul 29 (PTI) The Indian hockey team''s former technical adviser and current Australia coach Ric Charlesworth today lambasted the Delhi Commonwealth Games organisers, calling them "crazy" and "disrespectful" for scheduling matches in the middle of the day. "We will have to play in very hot weather with 16 players, it''s nuts and I find it extraordinary," Charlesworth told the Australian Associated Press (AAP). "They wouldn''t run the marathon in the middle of the day - it is crazy and disrespectful," he added. Charlesworth had a controversy-ridden tenure with the Indian hockey team and walked out of the job after a major stand-off with the administrators there. The highly-rated Aussie, who guided his country to the World Cup title earlier this year, said given the scheduling of the Games, his players would be forced to slog it out in the punishing Delhi heat. "My experience (of Delhi) has not been good, the grounds will be fine, but the problem is we will be playing in the middle of the day and that is unfair," he said. "Who knows how the people who organise these things think, it is OK if you are playing netball inside but not for our sport," he said. Charlesworth said he would have to make selection adjustments due to the scheduling of matches. "We have had to make adjustments to our selection process for the Commonwealth Games because of the conditions and in my opinion that is wrong and it does a disservice to the game and the players." FEATURE - Alternative sports stars build on 'X' factor

Dennis McCoy performs a 540 in the BMX Freestyle Vert competition during the X Games...

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 01:18 PM

The 16th X Games starts in Los Angeles on Thursday and the latest incarnation of the four-day gathering will once again feature athletes who have forged a lucrative career out of alternative street sports.

Rather than the brash teenagers often associated with BMX riding and skateboarding, full-time professionals will compete across four disciplines, hoping to retain an essential element of youth that has turned the games into a successful franchise.

Veteran BMX rider and commentator Dennis McCoy regards those associated with the X Games as 'Lifers' while 38-year-old Mat Hoffman maintains he is still a boy at heart.

"I like to go high," the freestyle BMX pioneer told a news conference on Wednesday. "I like to build ramps and hit 'em fast and see what I can do."

The X Games have successfully fused BMX and skateboarding with their motorised cousins motocross and rallycross into an industry that has grown from $5 billion a year in 2002 to $11 billion this year, according to USA Today.

Put another way, one of the most recognisable athletes for male American consumers aged 12-17 is not LeBron James, Derek Jeter or Tiger Woods but a retired skateboarder.

Tony Hawk could easily pass as the 42-year-old father of four that he is, but the Californian amassed nine X Games golds in his career to become an action sports mogul with his name emblazoned on apparel, theme park rides and video games.

Some of that market represented actual involvement in these sports but at least as much was simple identification with a perceived lifestyle, according to sports business analyst Dmitri Kopylovsky of market researchers IBISWorld.

"Mainstream sports don't give them the intensity and danger," Kopylovsky said of the action sports audience.

"It's really something that many of us don't have the guts to try, not that we don't have the ability or the training, which is the main appeal of it.

"From that (you get) the apparel and fashion, and general style and scene."

QUIET SCHEDULE

The X Games began life in the American summer of 1995 as a compendium of events like bungee jumping, in-line skating, street luge and sport-climbing, devised by cable sports network ESPN as a way to provide programming during a quiet schedule.

Skateboarding and BMX are the survivors from the early editions, along with enduring names like Hoffman, McCoy and Danish skater Rune Glifberg, who believes their continued exposure has led to prosperity.

"Action sports in general and especially skateboarding, is definitely the sport of the future," Glifberg said.

"Kids these days are into stuff that's more exciting and fast and dangerous."

The traditional measurement of a sport that has "arrived" and should be taken seriously is inclusion in the Olympic Games as happened with extreme sports like snowboarding in 2002 and BMX racing in 2008.

Glifberg, who describes skateboarding as "as much an art form as it is a sport", believes it had already transcended that definition.

"As people have said in the past, the Olympics needs skateboarding much more than skateboarding needs the Olympics."

Another definition is that professionals like the 35-year-old Glifberg, who has two young daughters, can make a viable career of it.

Glifberg's tool of trade was tucked under his arm as he spoke. That both his board and he were mainstream did not change the essence of the sport, which was closer to basketball, he said, than BMX.

"You're always going to see skateboarding on these different levels, different tiers," Glifberg explained.

"You'll have the top level professional athletes and then semi-pro and little leagues and then the kids that don't really care about joining a club or a team or getting sponsored.

"They'll just be on the corner and doing their sport, just like basketball where you have the NBA and all these other tiers, college basketball, and all the way down to people just playing in the street with one hoop."

New proposal to revolutionise Test cricket championship

Published>Thu, Jul 29 10 12:52 PM

Sydney, Jul 29 (ANI): A new proposal under consideration is all set to revolutionise Test cricket, with the two best nations to play a grand final possibly over six days or, even until there is a result.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland is confident his ICC counterparts will take their first steps towards a points-based system since a detailed plan devised by former Kiwi Test skipper Martin Crowe last September on how a Test championship would work.

Crowe, who is a member of the MCC's world cricket committee, formulated a knockout Test championship to be held every year with a grand final to be played at Lord's.

Teams would gain points for each Test they win and bonuses for large victories, which would be charted on a ladder to determine the top two sides in the world after the allocated season, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Any championship would radically change the context of series, with points on the line even in dead-rubber matches, and should improve ratings for broadcasters.

"A Test championship is a good initiative and brings a climax and a big global event around Test cricket. All the ICC global events forever and a day have been for the shorter forms of the game ...," Sutherland said.

Sutherland said a grand final could be held at a neutral venue, and if there was only room for one match, it could be a timeless Test or run over six days to maximise chances of a result.

It is unclear whether the crowded future tours program, which demands that each Test nation play each other home and away within the four-year framework, could be remodelled to allow a grand final each year. (ANI)
