Justine Henin continued her fairytale return to competitive tennis by coming from a set down to register her 500th career win and reach the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday.

The Belgian, who beat world number five Elena Dementieva in the second round on Wednesday, lost the final of the Brisbane International to compatriot Kim Clijsters in the buildup to the Australian Open. No matches for a year at Kotla; venue remains on 2011 WC itinerary

Published>Fri, Jan 22 10 10:39 AM

New Delhi, Jan. 21 -- The Ferozeshah Kotla will stage four matches as planned in the 2011 World Cup after it received what, in effect, was a get-out-of-jail-free card from the International Cricket Council on Thursday. There has been no mention of a ban, nor a financial penalty. A carefully worded ICC order stated: "Following the conclusion of a full investigation into the circumstances that led to the abandonment of a One-Day International match between India and Sri Lanka on 27 December 2009, the ICC confirms that no international cricket will be played at the New Delhi ground until the end of December 2010." The fifth and final ODI was stopped after the pitch was deemed too dangerous to play. It continues: "The ICC received a submission from the BCCI assuring it that no international match is scheduled and therefore no international match will be played at the ground until the end of 2010. Keeping this in mind, the ICC has decided to endorse this action on the part of BCCI as part of its concluding report." "In any case, we were not planning any international matches at the Kotla this year," a BCCI official told HT. "So this isn't really an issue." ICC pitch consultant Andy Atkinson will work with local officials to "oversee remedial work" ahead of the World Cup. But, in the meantime, the Kotla will host both IPL team Delhi Daredevils' home matches and domestic games. Delhi Daredevils' COO Amrit Mathur confirmed this. "We are looking forward to the IPL games at the Kotla," said Mathur. "It was a tricky situation for the ICC," said a DDCA source. "If they had banned us, it might have become difficult for them to get out of it, particularly in the context of our right to appeal, as proper procedure had not been followed. A ban involves being inspected thrice, disaffiliation and re-affiliation and a fine. Here they've basically said they endorse the calendar of the BCCI." "They have managed to uphold their match referee's (Alan Hurst) stand, yet have called Kotla an iconic ground, one which has never been dubbed unfit before." Interestingly, the ICC order says there was an "excessive degree of variation" while Hurst's report said that seam movement was "occasional".

Playing Tests with one-day mindset

Published>Fri, Jan 22 10 10:29 AM

Chittagong, Jan. 22 -- Talks of a close finish, resistance and grit from the Bangladesh batsmen went up in smoke on Thursday. The hosts had eight wickets in hand to bat the day out, but they succumbed rather meekly. The wicket hardly showed any sign of wear and tear even on the last day. The bounce was mostly consistent. Nevertheless, Bangladesh kept losing wickets. Virender Sehwag constantly kept the cover region vacant, enticing batsmen to drive. And that's where Bangladesh's predominantly limited-overs mindset came to the fore. On the verge of completing a decade in Test cricket, Bangladesh still have a lot to learn. Incidentally, former Bangla players like Habibul Bashar, Khaled Mashud, Akram Khan and even the current players believe their strength lies in batting. This time, though, the fault lies with the batsmen. They didn't back their bowlers, who bowled India out in the first innings and then picked up eight wickets in the second. They first failed to overhaul India total and then were shockingly aggressive while chasing 400 plus total in the second innings. The likes of Tamim Iqbal and skipper Shakib Al Hasan went for extravagant shots. They did get a few boundaries, but perished soon after. It appeared Bangladesh were playing an ODI.

Considering the fact that Bangladesh play a lot more one-day matches (215) than Tests (62) and their internationals hardly play in the domestic four-day competition, 'natural game' was exactly what was on display on Thursday.

Women hockey players reject Rs 50,000; continue to protest

Published>Fri, Jan 22 10 10:23 AM

Chandigarh, Jan. 22 -- Hockey India's hurried and feeble attempt at appeasing the protesting women players was shot down, with the team demanding to be treated at par with their male counterparts. Indian men's hockey team ended their strike after being promised an amount of Rs 1 crore. The women, however, were offered a mere Rs 50,000 each as reward for their performance in 2009. "We want HI to treat us at par and give us the same cash incentives," senior player Deepika Murthy said on Thursday. "Anything less will not do." The women's squad, preparing for the World Cup at the SAI Centre in Bhopal, has instead demanded Rs 3 lakh each for their performances in 2008-09. The probables also decided to continue with their black-armband protest but reiterated that they would not boycott the camp. "Both men's and women's team represent the country at the same platform, then why are the girls being discriminated against," added Mamta Kharab. The team also wants the governing body to pay cash incentives to the juniors. Hockey India had given Rs 1 lakh each to the junior men's team, which won the Asia Cup. Hockey India interim president, Vidya Stokes said she has requested the government to release Rs 1 lakh for each player as reward for their performances. The players, however, have rejected that offer too claiming that the government owes them Rs 1 lakh as per the cash incentives they give for winning medals in continental championships. "HI has got nothing to do with it," Kharab said. "That amount is for our silver medal in the Asia Cup and is pending for some time. It is not part of our demands." The players have also sought a graded contract system, like the one proposed by men. India responds Meanwhile, the players have received support from all quarters since their decision to open a bank account and seek help from the public. Madhya Pradesh chief minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan has promised to bear all expenses of the team camping in Bhopal. The government has also released Rs 50,000 to the family of E Rajani, whose father recently underwent surgery. The National Commission for Women, on Thursday, shot off a letter to HI asking it to look into the grievances of the players.

IPL auction snub: Sidhu bats for Pak players

Published>Fri, Jan 22 10 10:19 AM

Amritsar, Jan. 22 -- Cricketer-turned-politician BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu has reprimanded the influential team owners for the third Twenty-20 Indian Premier League for 'denting the secular image of the country' by way of ignoring Pakistani players in their team selection. "I don't know on whose instances they have done it, but, they have certainly created a room to cast aspersions on India's secular image and Gandhian philosophy to view the world society without the discrimination of caste, colour and creed," he said. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Sidhu urged the central government to intervene to defend the secular credentials of the country by directing the teams to chose a couple of Pakistani players for the IPL league. "Being a cricketer I know the worth of Pakistani players. How could they leave out a versatile player like Shahid Afridi?" he questioned. Sidhu said that cricket and culture were the only silver lines on the otherwise estranged bilateral relations of India and Pakistan. He said that at a time when government to government dialogue had no headway, it was only the cricket, which helped in breaking barriers between the SAARC giants.

Sidhu said that the formation of current IPL league teams would wrench the psyche of an ordinary Pakistani to the extent of rummaging justification into the anti-India activities being carried out by a selective few.

Safina finds recipe for success against Baltacha

Russia's Dinara Safina hits a return to Elena Baltacha of Britain during the Australian Open...

Published>Fri, Jan 22 10 10:09 AM

Aspiring chef Dinara Safina could have created a new dish of British lamb on Friday after she roasted Elena Baltacha 6-1 6-2 in less than an hour to reach the the fourth round of the Australian Open.

The 23-year-old world number two looked relaxed during the match on Rod Laver Arena, admitting afterwards she had acquired a new hobby in the culinary arts and gone to a local bookshop on her day off to purchase a cookbook.

"I had to buy two books. I like cooking. I'm having new apartment in Moscow," Safina told reporters.

"I'm like, 'okay, instead of library of books, I'll have cookbooks'. I want to cook.

"I'm just starting, you know. Until now nobody got sick, so this is the positive. They might... not like, but if they have problems with the stomach, it's not good."

Safina appeared to take some lessons from the cookbook, which was based on the popular Meryl Streep film "Julie & Julia", though there was little finesse in her approach as she pounded Baltacha into submission.

She was ruthlessly efficient in the first set, in which the only game she lost was when Baltacha broke her serve, and took it in just 26 minutes.

PRETTY SATISFIED

Safina appeared to be still sitting in her chair, mentally at least, at the start of the second set, allowing Baltacha to finally held her own serve by blasting away to love.

The Russian, however, soon got back to the business of blasting winners and attacking the world number 83 until she sealed the match in just 57 minutes.

"My game is trying to put pressure on opponent... so I managed to dictate from the first point of the match," Safina said.

"I think it was going everything right and during the match I was trying to do it more and more, to give her less, less time.

"I think it was very solid match from my side. I played good. (and am) pretty satisfied with everything I did."

Baltacha agreed with Safina's interpretation, admitting she had been outclassed in the high pressure environment of Rod Laver Arena. "It was difficult. It was difficult," Baltacha said. "All credit to Safina. I think she played really well.

"It was difficult because I don't play top 10 every week (and) I knew for me to get anywhere near her, I'd have to play very, very well. And she put a lot of pressure on me out there."

IPL imbroglio: PHF plays waiting game

Published>Fri, Jan 22 10 09:49 AM

Mumbai, Jan. 22 -- Despite growing demands for its hockey team to pull out of next month's World Cup in India following the "humiliation" meted out to its cricketers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction in Mumbai, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has no plans of pulling out its team from the mega event unless its government orders it to do so. The PHF has employed a wait-and-watch policy following Pakistan's decision of not sending a parliamentary delegation to India in protest. Pakistan ministers, Rehman Malik (interior), and Ijaz Jakhrani (sports), had on Thursday, also talked about giving a "befitting reply" to India. Former cricketer Zaheer Abbas said the country should pull out its hockey team from the World Cup that starts in New Delhi on February 28. "We must be clear about our sporting relations with India because for the last one year they have been doing everything possible to hurt our image and isolate us internationally," he said.

He said till Thursday afternoon, the PHF had not received any advisory from the government on the issue. The Pakistan team is currently playing a warm-up series against the Netherlands in Doha, Qatar, where it was held to a 4-4 draw on Wednesday.

Brutal Safina beats up on Baltacha to advance

Published Fri, Jan 22 10 08:09 AM

A brutal Dinara Safina beat up Britain's Elena Baltacha to advance to the fourth round of the Australian Open with a 6-1 6-2 victory on Friday.

Undoubtedly wanting to spend as little time as possible on Rod Laver Arena in the stifingly humid conditions, the world number two took the first set in just 26 minutes despite losing her own serve once.

Safina appeared to be still sitting in her chair, mentally at least, at the start of the second set, allowing Baltacha to finally held her own serve by blasting away to love.

The Russian, however, snapped out of her temporary fug and continued the assault by blasting winners and attacking the world number 83, setting up a fourth round match against either Maria Kirilenko or Roberta Vinci in 57 minutes.

Olympic torch relay enters home stretch with return to B.C.

Published Fri, Jan 22 10 07:49 AM

The Olympic flame entered the home stretch of its 45,000 kilometre journey across Canada on Thursday when it returned to British Columbia, the host province of the Feb. 12-28 Vancouver Winter Games.

Wally Buono, head coach of the Canadian Football League's B.C. Lions, took the torch from former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed as it crossed over the provincial border at Kicking Horse Pass, marking another key milestone in the 106-day relay.

"This handoff marks the start of the final leg of the Olympic Flame's historic journey across Canada -- a journey that has connected Canadians like never before," said British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell, who was on hand to welcome the flame.

"The torch relay has touched the farthest points in our nation and spread the spirit of the Games to hundreds of communities and millions of people.

"Today, British Columbians are celebrating the return of the Olympic Flame and cheering it on as it heads towards BC Place Stadium to kick off the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in just 22 days."

The flame began its relay journey across Canada on Oct 30, in Victoria, British Columbia. It first travelled north to the Arctic, and then east to Atlantic Canada, before coming back across the country to the Pacific coast.

It will arrive back in the Vancouver area five days before being used to light the Olympic cauldron at the opening ceremony, the first in Winter Games history to be held in an indoor venue.

Wife's nagging drove Plushenko to seek more gold

Evgeni Plushenko of Russia shows his gold medal during an awards ceremony after performing in...

Published>Fri, Jan 22 10 06:29 AM

Yevgeny Plushenko has it all -- a full complement of titles, pots of cash and, most importantly, a nagging wife.

If it had not been for wife Jana telling him to get his skates on, the Russian may never have returned to the ice to defend his Olympic crown in Vancouver next month.

"My wife kept going on about it," the 27-year-old told reporters after winning European gold on Thursday when asked what had made him consider a comeback.

"It is a great feeling the competition, I hadn't had enough of it."

Plushenko said during his three-and-a-half years away from competition he had kept an eye on the pretenders to his throne, adding that it was unbelievable that skaters had become world champions in his absence without performing a quadruple jump.

His return seems to have pushed the rest of the field into putting the tricky jumps into their routines.

"I was really glad that today people were doing two quads, maybe they understood that you need a quad to win. My task next time is to do two quads," said Plushenko, who has six European and three world gold medals as well as the Olympic gold.

"The most important competition is still to come, the Olympic Games. There the fight will be very hard."

When asked what the main differences between the Plushenko of 2006 and today were, the Russian quickly fired out a list.

"I have everything right now. I have all titles, I have money, I have a great wife, the best one," he said.

"My spins are much better, my steps are much better and I feel much better, that's the difference."

Another man making his comeback and also eyeing Olympic success is Stephane Lambiel, who won the silver with a routine oozing charm and dizzying spins.

While Plushenko spoke of the need for quad jumps, Swiss Lambiel emphasised the artistic aspect of the sport.

"People come to see a show as much as a competition," the twice world champion and 2006 Olympic silver medallist said.

"You must show your emotion, you must express the music, that's what I like about the sport."

With France's Brian Joubert winning the bronze, the podium lineup was the same as at the 2006 Europeans. Joubert is hoping that is not a sign of things to come.

"I hope it's not going to be the same thing for the Olympics, I don't want to be sixth again," he said after Thursday's mistake-ridden performance, which he put down to a lack of confidence.

Zambia, Cameroon into Nations Cup quarter-finals

Published>Fri, Jan 22 10 05:49 AM

Zambia and Cameroon advanced to the African Nations Cup quarter-finals by the slimmest margin on Thursday after Group D ended in a dramatic three-way tie.

Zambia beat Gabon 2-1 in Benguela to take top spot while Cameroon twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Tunisia in Lubango and finish second.

The results saw Zambia and Cameroon end on four points, along with Gabon who had been top of the standings before the last day of group matches at the tournament in Angola.

Zambia, who will face Nigeria in the last eight in Lubango on Monday, finished top by virtue of the number of goals scored against the other three teams.

They were level on points with Cameroon and Gabon and also tied on goal difference but in a mini-league between the trio had scored four goals to Cameroon_ts three and Gabon_ts two to advance according tournament regulations.

Cameroon will return to Benguela to play holders Egypt in their quarter-final tie on Monday.

NERVY FINISH

Zambia staved off a late rally from Gabon, who scored seven minutes from time to set up the possibility of a late recovery after being thoroughly outplayed for most of the match.

Fabrice do Marcelino's strike ensured a nervy finish for Zambia but they held out to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their last six tournament appearances.

Rainford Kalaba got their first, beating the onrushing Gabon goalkeeper to a finely threaded through ball in the 28th minute. The second in the 62nd was a simple tap-in for James Chamanga.

Cameroon substitute Achille Webo set up two goals as they snatched their ticket to a seventh successive quarter-final appearance.

Webo, who came on at halftime, provided Samuel Eto_to and Landry Nguemo with perfect passes as Cameroon fought back.

Tunisia, eliminated after drawingtheir three games, had gone ahead inside the first minute through Amine Chermiti and were in front again in the 63rd when Cameroon defender Aurelien Chedjou put the ball into his own net.

The Indomitable Lions defence was caught snoozing when striker Chermiti connected with a Khaled Souissi cross to head home after 50 seconds.

But soon after halftime Webo found Eto_to, who coolly slotted home to level the match in the 47th minute.

Centre back Chedjou, however, lobbed his own keeperin an attempt to clear a cross as Tunisia regained the lead.

One minute later, Nguemo equalised for Cameroon when he fired past Aymen Mathlouthi from another Webo pass.

Tunisia finished with 10 men after defender Ammar Jemel was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 88th.

IPL: Pak says it's an insult, India says introspect

Published>Fri, Jan 22 10 05:19 AM

New Delhi and Islamabad today traded diplomatic barbs over cricket with External Affairs Minister S M Krishna rejecting allegations on non-selection of Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) while his Ministry asked Pakistan to "introspect on the reasons" for the strain in bilateral ties.

Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that the manner in which Pakistani players had been "insulted" showed India was "not serious" about the peace process.

In response, Krishna said: "The Government has nothing to do with IPL, on selection of players and various exercises that are connected with it. So Pakistan will have to draw a line between where the Government of India is connected and where Government of India is an actor."

The External Affairs Ministry rejected reports that teams didn't opt for Pakistani players during the IPL auction because of apprehension that they would be denied visas. It said: "Pakistan should introspect on the reasons which have put a strain on relations between India and Pakistan, and have adversely impacted peace, stability and prosperity in the region."

Defence Minister A K Antony too said: "Unless Government of Pakistan takes action against those involved in the heinous acts of 26/11... strong, convincing action to dismantle the terrorist outfits across the border, Indian people will be always impatient."

Asked to respond to the remark by US Defence Secretary Robert Gates that "India's patience will be limited were there to be further attacks" such as 26/11, Antony said: "I also told him that our people are becoming impatient. So you please advise Pakistan."

The remarks came a day after Pakistan's state-run APP news agency quoted Rehman Malik as saying "I want to make it clear that whether it is India or any other country in the world, their citizens would have to face (the) same behaviour as meted out to our people."

The angry exchange comes at a time when Foreign Ministers of both countries are due to attend a meeting in London next week on a new plan for Afghanistan.

Accolades flow for 'Golden Bear' Nicklaus on 70th birthday

Jack Nicklaus holds a news conference at the Pine Valley Golf Club on the outskirts...

Published>Fri, Jan 22 10 03:29 AM

Jack Nicklaus was the recipient of glowing tributes and sentimental greetings on Thursday while he celebrated his 70th birthday on a fishing trip to Christmas Island in the Pacific Ocean.

Long known as the 'Golden Bear', American Nicklaus is widely viewed as the game's greatest player and he piled up a record 18 majors in a glittering career that set the benchmark for others to follow.

Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, members of the so-called Big Three with Nicklaus, were among the first to shower their long-time rival with accolades.

"Jack Nicklaus and I have been very good friends for 50 years, from the time he arrived on the national tournament scene in the early 1960s," American Palmer said in a statement released by the PGA Tour.

"If anything has distinguished our association over that half century, it has been our competitiveness.

"It was not just our desire to be the winner every time we faced each other in a golf tournament in our golden years. We often were rivals in business endeavours, golf and otherwise.

"Through it all, Jack and I have been of one mind and pursuit with regard to expanding and protecting the integrity, the dignity and the traditions of our great game," added the 80-year-old Palmer, a seven-times major champion.

South African Player, like Nicklaus a winner of all four major titles, said of his lifelong friend: "He has been one of the greatest ambassadors for golf, not only in the U.S. but worldwide.

"He understood the true value of internationalism. We are a global society, and he continued to play around the world and promote the game of golf.

"While doing that, he has been a family man and he's got a wonderful wife in Barbara. He has been the epitome of golf's necessity."

MEMORABLE DUELS

Eight-times major winner Tom Watson, who featured in several memorable duels with Nicklaus in the 1970s, also praised his fellow American.

"Jack is my friend and competitor," the 50-year-old Watson said. "I have learned a great deal from him in terms of both golf and life.

"Better than anyone else I've ever seen in golf, Jack had the amazing ability to hit the proper shot, at the proper time, under the proper conditions.

"When all is said and done ... his most lasting legacy will not be his 20 major championships, but the wonderful memories of being a loving father, grandfather, and husband.

"That is the best legacy one can ever have," Watson said, his total of 20 major wins for Nicklaus including two U.S. amateur titles.

A prodigious hitter in his prime and one of the game's best putters, Nicklaus won 73 times on the PGA Tour in a professional career that began in 1961 and effectively ended with an emotional farewell at the 2005 British Open.

He was golf's dominant figure from the early sixties until the late eighties and his on-course battles with Palmer and Player captivated fans, although Nicklaus generally held the edge.

His career haul of majors comprised a record six U.S. Masters, five PGA championships, four U.S. Opens and three British Opens.

Nicklaus finished second a record 19 times in major championships, perhaps a better reflection of his remarkable consistency at the pinnacle of the game.

Rossi hands over to Massa after Ferrari test

MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi walks by the paddock during a F1 Ferrari testing session...

Published Fri, Jan 22 10 02:29 AM

MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi showed impressive pace in a Formula One car at the end of two days of testing with Ferrari in Barcelona on Thursday.

The Italian, who had a few spins on Wednesday when the track was wet, completed more than 600km behind the wheel at the Circuit de Catalunya and finished with a best time of one minute 21.900 seconds.

That compared with this year's fastest race lap of 1:22.762 set by Brazilian Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button's pole position time of 1:20.527.

The 30-year-old had the advantage of a 2008 car on slick tyres and light on fuel but Ferrari insiders were impressed by the Italian's ability to learn and improve his times consistently.

"It shows he has the talent to progress," commented one.

Ferrari have tried to recruit Rossi in the past and team boss Stefano Domenicali said last week he would check on the Italian's availability if they had the chance to race a third F1 car in the future.

Rossi, who has talked more of a future in rallying after MotoGP, told the Ferrari website (www.ferrari.com) he would "have given anything for such a lap time" in his sixth test in a Formula One car.

Brazilian Felipe Massa will take over the car on Friday as he continues his recovery from the serious head injuries he suffered in Hungary last year. Formula One testing in current equipment is banned until Feb. 1.

"As the car and the track were available I thought it would be helpful to go onto the track for a day to continue gaining confidence with the Formula One," Massa told the website.

Thursday's play washed out at Bob Hope Classic

Published Fri, Jan 22 10 01:13 AM

The second round of the Bob Hope Classic has been postponed until Friday because of unplayable conditions at La Quinta, California on Thursday.

Organisers had initially pushed back the scheduled tee times by two hours due to heavy overnight rain before eventually abandoning play for the day.

PGA Tour officials said a Monday finish was likely after the five-round pro-am celebrity event had lost an entire day's play for only the third time in 51 editions.

The last time a full day's play was washed out at the Bob Hope Classic was in the first round of the 1980 tournament.

Although further rain has been forecast for Friday, it is expected to be much lighter than the thunderstorms and possible flooding predicted for Thursday afternoon.

Little-known American Shane Bertsch held the first-round lead after firing a 10-under-par 62 on the Nicklaus Private course at PGA West, one of four venues hosting the 90-hole event.

Rookie Alex Prugh, making only his third appearance on the PGA Tour, and fellow American Jeff Quinney recorded matching 64s on the same Nicklaus layout to share second place.

American Pat Perez, who won last year's title by three shots, opened with a 68 at the SilverRock Resort, the most difficult of the four venues.

Zambia were one of three teams to finish on four points but were placed ahead of Cameroon by virtue of goals scored. Gabon were eliminated with the lowest goals scored among the three.

Zambia's Rainford Kalaba slid a neat shot past goalkeeper Didier Evono to open the scoring in the 28th minute and James Chamanga made it 2-0 with a simple tap-in just after the hour.

But a goal seven minutes from the end by Gabon substitute Fabrice do Marcelino set up an exciting finish.

Abu Dhabi, Jan 21 (PTI) Indian golfer Shiv Kapur turned in a brilliant four-under 68 to lie tied 17 after the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open golf tournament on the European Tour here today. Jyoti Randhawa carded a sedate two-under 70 for his tied 36th place, while SSP Chowrasia turned in a level-par 72 to lie tied 72nd. S.Africa police arrest man over World Cup death threat

Published Thu, Jan 21 10 11:49 PM

Police on Thursday arrested one of two men who threatened in a television interview to kill fans at June's World Cup, causing uproar among officials fearful that South Africa's high crime rate will deter foreign visitors.

The interview last weekend on the private channel eTV unleashed days of controversy over both crime and freedom of the press after authorities issued subpoenas for two of the station's journalists to reveal their sources.

A man who set up the interview with the two self-styled criminals was found dead earlier this week, apparently from suicide, eTV and police said.

The two men, whose faces were concealed, said on the programme they would commit armed robberies and murder during the month-long soccer spectacular which is expected to attract 450,000 foreign fans. They said this was justified as revenge for colonial wrongs.

"Our specialised unit ... the "Hawks" in the early hours of the morning arrested one of the self-confessed (gang) kingpins," Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said in a statement.

"According to the footage, this is the thug who boasted and threatened to rob and kill during the World Cup," he said.

Police, who launched a major hunt after the interview, said the man was arrested following a tip-off. He faces charges of intimidation and inciting violence, that are punishable by up to 20 years in jail.

Mthethwa, backed by both the ruling ANC party and police Commissioner Bheki Cele, condemned the eTV interview as disturbing and reckless, but the station defended the programme as investigative journalism that did not glorify criminals.

The South African National Editors Forum said it was appalled by the subpoenas, saying they would undermine press independence and credibility.

South African and World Cup officials are sensitive about violence, which is one of the biggest concerns around the tournament. The country has one of the world's highest rates of violent crime, with 50 murders a day, more than the United States which has six times the population.

Pakistan Kabbadi federation scraps India tour

Published Thu, Jan 21 10 09:59 PM

Karachi, Jan 21 (PTI) The Pakistan Kabbadi Federation has decided to drop their scheduled tour to India in protest against the treatment meted out to the country''s cricketers during the third Indian Premier League auction. The Kabbadi federation said it has taken the decision not to send its team for the five Kabbadi matches to show solidarity with the wave of resentment in the country over the way the IPL organisers and franchises had humiliated the Pakistani cricketers at the auction. Udinese to take Portsmouth to CAS over Muntari payments

Published Thu, Jan 21 10 09:29 PM

Italy's Udinese are taking Portsmouth to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for failing to pay instalments on Sulley Muntari's 2007 transfer to the troubled Premier League side.

"We can confirm that we are presenting a case to CAS over the payment of Muntari's transfer," a spokesman for the Serie A club said on Thursday.

Ghanaian midfielder Muntari is now back in Serie A having joined champions Inter Milan in 2008 after only a season in England.

British media reported that Portsmouth still owe Udinese around four million pounds ($6.53 million) for the player. Muntari joined Portsmouth for around seven million pounds.

It is more bad news for the club, owned by Saudi businessman Ali al Faraj, who have had a miserable season on and off the pitch.

Currently bottom of the Premier League, they face a winding-up order over unpaid taxes, have been banned from any transfer activity and have three times failed to pay their players on time.

Former Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell said on Wednesday he was suing the club for fees and bonuses he said he was owed.

Last week the Premier League awarded seven million pounds of their television revenue payments to other clubs who were still owed transfer fees by Portsmouth.

McLaren team must win season's first race: Button

Published>Thu, Jan 21 10 09:09 PM

London, Jan 21 (ANI): Formula One champion Jenson Button, who will launch the defence of his world crown in March, has said it was vital he and his new McLaren team are ready to win the season's first race.

He believes the key will be working together with team-mate Lewis Hamilton to drive the Woking squad forward before the opener in Bahrain.

"I want to get straight into it to get the best result I can with the new car, because over the last few years the driver who has won the first race has gone on to win the championship," The Sun quoted Button, as saying.

"You can get some really big points in the first races when other people are making mistakes or are not ready for every scenario," he said.

Button learned this lesson last year when he won six of the first seven races for his former Brawn team to lay the foundations for his title tilt.

"There's a lot of work to do before we even think of stepping into the car. That's what I am going to do now so I am 100 per cent ready when we get to Bahrain. I don't want any excuses," he said.

Button is sure he and Hamilton will co-operate even though many F1 observers believe there will be a destructive clash of egos between the last two world champions.

Hamilton has been McLaren's blue-eyed boy for years, while Button is the new kid on the block. (ANI)

The team comprising Rashid Khan, Chikkarangappa, Ashbeer Saini and Abhijit Chadha finished tied for top place alongside Thailand to book their spot in the world stage of the championship which will be held in Japan in June.

Delhi lad Rashid bagged another international title as he led the individual standings with a three-day total of five-under 211. Team India matched Thailand's mark with an aggregate of six-over 654 in the three rounds.

Only two teams qualify for the final stage from Asia. Korea finished in third place, five shots behind the tied winners at 11-over 659. This is the third time that the Indian team has made it to the final stage of the World Junior Golf Team Championship.

The last two times before this that the team qualified for the world stage was in 2007 and 2008.

Canada strengthens security for Winter Olympic Games

Published Thu, Jan 21 10 08:29 PM

Bal Krishna Toronto, Jan 21 (PTI) Canada has put in place a comprehensive security plan for the XXI Winter Olympic Games next month, with provision to use force to defend new airspace-security restrictions. Transport Canada, in concert with federal security agencies, has approved a comprehensive net of new transportation restrictions governing the movement of aircraft, marine vessels and dangerous goods during the Winter Games in Vancouver amid fears of terrorist strikes to disrupt the meet. The XXI Winter Games will open on February 12 and close on February 28. The response to a violation of flight restrictions could range from simple radio contact with the pilot to the use of Canadian military CF-18 fighter jets and Griffon helicopters, according to Lieut. David Lavallee, spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defence Command. "There are many facets to a situation like that," he said. "Suffice is to say we will have aircraft and people ready to respond to violations of the restricted airspace. The security agencies have a graduated response that can, if necessary, culminate in the use of lethal force," Lavallee said. ISU spokeswoman, RCMP Const. Mandy Edwards said anything that is possible or plausible, "we try to plan for". "We try to take everything into consideration and make the most comprehensive security plan," he underlined. Women hockey players reject offer of Rs.50,000 each

Published>Thu, Jan 21 10 07:19 PM

New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS) Taking the cue from the men's team, members of India's women hockey team told Hockey India that its offer of Rs.50,000 each as incentive for their performance last year was not acceptable as it is measly. They said they will accept nothing less than Rs.3 lakh each.

HI acting president Vidya Stokes told IANS Thursday that HI has also requested the sports ministry to reward the girls with Rs.1 lakh each for winning the silver medal in the Asia Cup.

The girls at the national camp in Bhopal, however, were not impressed and rejected both offers outright, saying that it was too little and too late.

'We will not accept Rs.50,000 as the amount is to measly, considering the high standard of our performance last year. We want each one of us to be paid Rs.3 lakh as decided at our team meeting to consider the HI offer. We have not been paid any money last year whereas the players in the men's team got Rs.4.5 lakh each,' captain Surinder Kaur told IANS from Bhopal.

'We will continue to protest peacefully, but we are not going to boycott the national camp like the men did. We are playing for the national team and these things should not distract our preparation,' she said.

As a first step of protest, the girls continued their training session, wearing black arm-bands. Also, the players have decided to raise money on their own as part of their indignation towards HI's stepmotherly treatment towards the girls team.

'We are raising money for the girls who are in need and this will be our way of protest. We have opened a bank account for this because we know that we have to take care of ourselves.'

Senior pro and former captain Mamta Kharab said the girls should also get graded payment if the men get.

'If Hockey India has agreed to pay the men, we should also be paid the same, taking our performance into account. We held our hands back after former president Ashok Kumar Mattoo assured us that we will get our due, but nothing happened. We love our country and the game so much that we won't resort to any strike.'

Stokes said considering the monetary constraints of HI, it was decided to pay 19 girls who turned out for the country last year Rs.50,000 each as a first instalment pending a final decision on the total quantum of money to be paid by the elected HI.

'We have also written a letter to the Sports Ministry to give them cash award of Rs.1 lakh each for their silver-medal finish in the Asia Cup. We are hopeful the ministry will respond positively,' she said.

The women's team last year won the Champions Challenge II in Kazan and came back with silver medal in the Asia Cup in Thailand.

The men's last week went on a lightning strike, demanding immediate clearance of their match fees, sponsorship money and incentive bonuses for their performance last year.

Eventually, Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi had to intervene and settle the matter by paying each player Rs.4.5 lakh after team sponsors Sahara released Rs.1. crore. Incidentally, Sahara also sponsors the women's team.

Visa, politics no reason for Pak players missing IPL-3: India

Published>Thu, Jan 21 10 07:13 PM

New Delhi, Jan.21 (ANI): Rubbishing Pakistan's claim that its eleven players did not win Indian Premier League contracts because of politics or visa concerns, the Ministry of External Affairs said Thursday that such apprehensions were misplaced.

"The participation or absence of Pakistani cricketers in a commercial event of the nature of IPL is, thus, a matter not within the purview of the government," the MEA said in a statement.

It termed the allegations as "unfortunate" and asked Pakistan to introspect on the reasons, which have put a strain on relations between India and Pakistan, and have adversely impacted on peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

Shahid Afridi's manager, Umran Khan, had told the BBC that franchisees were advised not to bid as Pakistan players would not be issued with visas.

Khan believes the visa issue was behind the failure of Pakistan players not winning IPL contracts.

The MEA further clarified that 17 Pakistani cricketers were issued requisite Indian visas at very short notice in December 2009 and January 2010 to participate in IPL 2010.

Based on a request from the Pakistan Cricket Board to the High Commission of India in Islamabad, the MEA also facilitated necessary clearances from other ministries of the Government of India.

Cricketers from Pakistan had participated in the first edition of IPL in 2008, but not in the second edition in 2009, which was held in South Africa. One Pakistani cricketer participated in the Champions League T-20 tournament held in India in October 2009.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik also charged the Indian Government with malafide intent on the IPL issue, and has threatened to cut off sporting ties with India.

A parliamentary delegation from Pakistan which was slated to visit India to attend the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Election Commission of India, has cancelled its visit in protest over the IPL embarrassment. By Naveen Kapoor(ANI)

U19 Cricket World Cup: England thrash Indian Colts by 31 runs

Published>Thu, Jan 21 10 07:09 PM

Christchurch, Jan 21(ANI): Defending ICC U19 Cricket World Cup champion India lost to England by 31 runs in the final group stage match in Lincoln, New Zealand on Thursday.

The win means England has topped Group A, while India has finished second. As such, England will now take on the West Indies in the Super League quarter-final at Rangiora while traditional rivals India and Pakistan will go head to head in the other quarter-final at Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

Both the quarterfinals will be played on Saturday.

England got off to a slow start after being put in to bat, thanks to a brilliant opening spell from Indian left-arm fast bowler Saurabh Netrawalkar who bowled 10 overs straight and finished with figures of 3-25.

England looked to be in serious trouble at 60-4 in the 19th over, but 18-year old middle-order batsman Ben Stokes (100) combined with Ateeq Javid (42) to breathe life back into the English innings. The two batsmen added 100 runs for the fifth wicket in 21 overs Stokes clobbered four fours and six sixes before being the sixth batsman out at the score of 222 in the 46th over. England finally finished at 246-8.

Apart from opening bowler Netrawalkar, none of the other India bowlers seriously troubled the England batsmen as the runs came thick and fast from the likes of Harshal Patel and Harmeet Singh who both conceded six an over from their eight-over spells.

In reply, India's batsmen occasionally got starts, but were unable to build any substantial individual innings or partnerships. Wickets fell with regularity and it was left to wicketkeeper Sufiyan Shaikh to take the total over 200. Shaikh scored 45 off 72 deliveries while Netrawalkar backed up his bowling effort with 28 at the end of the innings, as India were eventually bowled out for 215.

England's David Payne was the most successful bowler, taking 3-40 while batting hero Stokes chipped in with two wickets including the scalp of dangerous Mayank Agarwal, who was smartly caught by Jack Manuel.

With India and England advancing to the next stage, third-placed Afghanistan and fourth-placed Hong Kong will appear in the Plate Championship, which starts in Napier from Saturday. (ANI)

Cardoso wins third stage of Tour Down Under

Published Thu, Jan 21 10 06:49 PM

Portugal's Manuel Cardoso won an exhausting third stage of the Tour Down Under on Thursday as Germany's Andre Greipel held his overall lead in the first event on this year's UCI ProTour calendar.

The Footon rider summoned up all his remaining energy to win the 132.5-km stage in the South Australia mountains held in oppressive temperatures topping 40 degrees Celcius.

"I dont think I have a chance to win overall despite my win here, I have had a lot of hard days over the first couple of days of this race, I am probably too far behind," said Cardoso.

"But it was really important for me, it is my first pro race, first pro team.... so it is a very important win."

Spain's Alejandro Valverde finished second while Australia's road race world champion Cadel Evans was third.

"It was a bit of a strange old day, a bit harder than most expected, pretty windy and the heat of course," Evans said.

"Coming into the last kilometre it was like riding in slow motion almost, everyone was so exhausted."

Greipel, who won the first two stages, finished with the front group to hold on to the leader's jersey with three days to go.

Lance Armstrong needed a new rear wheel after puncturing a tyre. He recovered to finish in the main peloton in 23rd place but said he was too tired to even join in the sprint finish.

"I can't go, I'm dead," he said.

"He was happy he could make it. I'm not gonna tell you everything he just said to me. You've got to have a little bit of a secret," Federer told a news conference.

"He shook a lot of hands, and I knew mine was one more. From what I've heard, I think he met Serena and myself."

Federer's polished display dispelled any doubts about his prospects of winning the first grand slam of the year after he survived a scare in his opening match with Igor Andreev.

"It's still early on in the tournament," he said. "You sometimes don't have to force the issue every single time."

Serena had earlier joined older sister Venus in the third round as the main contenders continued to move safely through the draw.

Serena had no problems defeating Czech Petra Kvitova 6-2 6-1 and is steadily improving as she tries to defend the title she won last year while Venus cruised to a 6-2 7-5 victory over Austria's Sybille Bammer.

"I thought today was a little bit better than my match in my first round," Serena said. "I felt like I was moving better and I had better energy. Yeah, just felt all around a lot better."

Serbia's Novak Djokovic, the 2008 champion, survived a shaky start to win while in-form Russian Nikolay Davydenko and Australia's Lleyton Hewitt advanced in straight sets.

Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki also sailed through, beating Germany's Julia Goerges 6-3 6-1 but, in a tournament bereft of major upsets, there were at least two surprises to spice things up on Thursday.

WINDOW OPENS

The former world number one Ana Ivanovic bowed out after a 6-7 7-5 6-4 loss to unseeded Argentine Gisela Dulko while Marcos Baghdatis defeated Spain's David Ferrer, the 17th seed.

Baghdatis has been plagued by injuries since his rollercoaster ride to the 2006 Australian Open final but showed he is getting back to his fighting best after winning 4-6 3-6 7-6 6-3 6-1.

"I saw a window open, so that's how it went," the Cypriot said.

Ivanovic made the final in Australia in 2008 and won the French Open that same year but her career has been in freefall ever since and she has slipped to 21st in the rankings despite trying desperately to resurrect her fortunes.

"It's a process. I think I just have to be patient," she said. "Some matches it's there, some not. I just have to sort of keep my head up and try to improve."

Djokovic was unusually tentative at the start of his match but was always too streetwise for Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli, winning 3-6 6-1 6-1 6-3.

"I managed to make that transition from being defensive to being offensive and changing pace and holding the game," Djokovic said.

Davydenko steam-rollered Ukraine's Illya Marchenko 6-3 6-3 6-0 to maintain his unbeaten start to the year as he chases his maiden grand slam title while Hewitt survived a dogged challenge from American Donald Young to win 7-6 6-4 6-1.

Australian teenager Bernard Tomic received a dressing down from tournament organisers and opponents after he blamed his second-round loss on the schedule.

The 17-year-old was beaten in five sets by Croatian Marin Cilic on Wednesday in a match that did not finish until after 2am the next day.

"I'm not trying to make any excuses, but I go to sleep at like nine, 10 normally. It's way past my bedtime," he said.

Australian Open director Craig Tiley was not amused, saying: "If there doesn't become a change in his behaviour, it becomes extremely hard for him to excel at the top echelons of the sport."

'Impossible' to immediate in 15 minutes

Published>Thu, Jan 21 10 05:49 PM

New Delhi, Jan. 21 -- The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has given the nod for organising the shotgun camp for the Commonwealth Championships (Feb 17-28), which was not on the anvil even till Wednesday afternoon. It is almost miraculous that, 15 minutes after Hindustan Times spoke to senior SAI officials asking them about the status of the camp, a total about-turn happened. While earlier the SAI Director-General, Sayan Chatterjee had said, "It (organising the camp) is NRAI's (National Rifle Association of India) problem." However, soon after, Sports Ministry's joint-secretary, Prabir Krishn, called HT and said, "The camp will be held from February 1 at the Dr Karni Singh Ranges. We are taking on loan 46,000 skeet and 50,000 trap cartridges from shooters and will be returning the ammo once the SAI imports its consignment," said Krishn. The last shotgun camp was held in November last year and the shooters have not been training since then. "The stalemate between the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and the SAI has resulted in a paucity of cartridges and we have been told a camp is impossible," a double-trap marksman had said earlier on Wednesday. A top SAI official too had confirmed earlier in the day that a camp was "impossible" before the championship. "We never keep any stock. The NRAI imports on our behalf and we refund the bills. But this time around the federation has said that they will not import on our behalf, leaving us with little stocks," he added. The shortage of ammunition was a direct consequence of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) slapping a fine of Rs eight crore on NRAI for duty evasion on import of arms and ammunition. Subsequently, it is learnt, the NRAI's import license was also cancelled. Krishn said: "We have asked the NRAI to return the Rs 84 lakh we have given them to procure ammunition. We will do it ourselves." NRAI had written a letter to SAI declaring its inability to procure cartridges because of the DRI action. A senior NRAI official said the federation had enough stock only for conducting the Commonwealth Championship.

"The DRI exempts import for SAI but when we give ammunition to our state associations they levy duty. There should be one norm for everyone," the official added.

Saina starts season with easy win

Published>Thu, Jan 21 10 05:25 PM

Saina Nehwal began her competitive season with an opening-round 21-10 21-12 dismissal of Malaysian qualifier Li Lian Yang at the Malaysia Open Super Series on Wednesday. The world No 8, who had skipped the nationals in Guwahati and the Korean Super Series to nurse a few niggles from the season past, has returned to the grind of the Super Series tour this week, though her focus in 2010 remains the three big ones - the world championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games soon, all bunched up in the latter half of the year.

The testing times, though, could begin as early as Thursday's second-round clash when Nehwal, seeded seventh at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, looks for a quarter-finals spot. Facing Ai Goto will be the Hyderabad player's first real stretch as the Japanese floater, ranked 26th in the world, is likely to offer more resistance than Nehwal's first round easy hunt. Against the local qualifier Yang on Wednesday, the 19-year-old Indian took exactly five points to settle down after which she was ruthless in putting it across the young Malaysian - using 11 smash winners in the second game alone to keep widening the gap.

Nehwal's second half of 2009 was replete with struggles (and losses) against dangerous Top-20 and Top-30 players, and she would be relieved to get going in her first tournament of the fresh year at an event where the top Chinese - Wang Yihan, Wang Lin, Wang Shixian and Wang Xin, besides Jiang Yanjiao, also return to action.

Chetan through too

Also going through to Round 2 was India's top men's challenger Chetan Anand, who took half an hour to see off Malaysian Kwong Beng Chan 21-19 21-16. The 29-year-old Indian, ranked 16 in the world, faces another local qualifier, Wei Feng Chong, in the second round. India's leading mixed doubles pair Jwala Gutta and V Diju do not feature at Malaysia and the medal-hunt for the country at a multi-discipline event begins this month-end when they compete at the SAFF Games from January 29.

Mishra spins India to victory over Bangladesh

Gautam Gambhir (L) and Amit Mishra (2nd L) congratulate Rahul Dravid (R) after he caught...

Published Thu, Jan 21 10 05:08 PM

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra grabbed four second session wickets as India completed a 113-run victory over hosts Bangladesh in the first test on Thursday.

Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim (101) was last man out following his maiden test century, Mishra having him caught by substitute fielder Pragyan Ojha at long-off as the hosts were all out for 301.

Mushfiqur's century, in which he struck 17 fours and a six, was the highlight of an otherwise disappointing batting performance by the hosts.

Bangladesh resumed the final day on 67-2 chasing an unlikely 415 for victory but they were reduced to 136-5 at lunch after Virender Sehwag dismissed Tamim Iqbal for 52 and Ishant Sharma claimed the wickets of Mohammad Ashraful and Raqibul Hassan.

Mishra (4-92) then set to work wrapping up the bulk of the tail.

First he had Shakib Al Hasan (17) caught by Sehwag at silly point after the ball popped up off the shoulder of the bat, then Shahadat Hossain (24) clean bowled and Shafiul Islam (8) went after he drilled a catch back to the bowler.

Zaheer Khan claimed the other wicket of Mahmudullah for 20 after he was caught by Dinesh Karthik

India, the number one ranked test team, can wrap up a series win in the the second and final test which begins in Dhaka on Jan. 24. (Reporting by Azad Majumder; Edited by Patrick Johnston; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

Robinho says there's no fallout with Man City coach Mancini

Published>Thu, Jan 21 10 04:59 PM

London, Jan.21 (ANI): Brazilian soccer star Robinho has insisted he has no differences with manchester City coach Roberto Mancini and vowed to prove his worth to the club.

Robinho suffered the indignity of being taken off with half-an-hour left in a 2-0 defeat at Everton last weekend, after himself coming on as a substitute.

He stormed straight down the tunnel, fuelling rumours of a fall-out with Mancini, who left him on the bench for City's 2-1 Carling Cup semi-final win over Manchester United.

But Robinho vowed to prove he has the work ethic to be a success at City, The Mirror reports. (ANI)

Antibiotic drops most effective, safest way to treat swimmer's ear

Published>Thu, Jan 21 10 04:54 PM

Washington, January 21 (ANI): Antibiotic drops are the most effective and safest therapy to use when treating cases of acute otitis externa, commonly known as swimmer's ear, says a new review of studies.

Lead author Vivek Kaushik, a consultant otolaryngologist at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, England found topical treatment effectively helps control the pain and inflammation of swimmer's ear and may even cut down the use of oral antibiotics.

Kaushik said: "Topical antibiotics are effective at treating simple acute otitis externa although in up to 40 percent of cases, oral antibiotics are also prescribed. The findings from our review confirm that topical treatment alone is highly effective and that additional antibiotics are not required."

Richard Rosenfeld, chairman of otolaryngology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, added: "Considering that acute otitis externa affects between one in 100 and one in 250 of the general population annually, even a 20 percent prevalence of oral antibiotic use in the U.S. would yield about 240,000 unnecessary annual antibiotic prescriptions at the low end.

"Topical therapy is highly effective and can be done with either an antiseptic- or antibiotic-containing preparation, which may also contain a steroid."

Woods should come out away from golf to defuse circus: Ogilvy

Published>Thu, Jan 21 10 04:39 PM

Abu Dhabi, Jan 21(ANI): Australian golfer Geoff Ogilvy has advised scandal-hit Tiger Woods not to air his dirty linen in golf's public arena.

Ogilvy said the billionaire sportsman should find another forum for bringing his circus to town.

"I think he should come out (of hiding) away from a golf course, one, out of respect for all of the other players, and two, to defuse the circus part of it," The Times quoted Ogilvy, as saying.

"That would be the best thing for him, for every other player and the tournament. I don't believe a lot of tournaments want all the tabloid media floating around. It would still be big and crazy, but that tabloid edge might be gone," he added.

The 2006 US Open champion further said that Woods, who is taking an indefinite break from professional golf, would have to confront many questions before playing again. His first conference is going to be the crazy one. A lot of people who have been afraid to ask questions for ten or 12 years won't be quite as hesitant as they used to be. And he is going to have to answer questions," Ogilvy said.

Woods withdrew from public scene after his extramarital affairs shattered his marriage, following which he allegedly checked into a rehabilitation centre for sexual addiction in Mississippi.

He was recently reported to be planning a comeback with the Tavistock Cup in US in March. (ANI)
