Canada strengthens security for Winter Olympic Games

Bal Krishna Toronto, Jan 21 (PTI) Canada has put in place a comprehensive security plan for the XXI Winter Olympic Games next month, with provision to use force to defend new airspace-security restrictions. Transport Canada, in concert with federal security agencies, has approved a comprehensive net of new transportation restrictions governing the movement of aircraft, marine vessels and dangerous goods during the Winter Games in Vancouver amid fears of terrorist strikes to disrupt the meet. The XXI Winter Games will open on February 12 and close on February 28. The response to a violation of flight restrictions could range from simple radio contact with the pilot to the use of Canadian military CF-18 fighter jets and Griffon helicopters, according to Lieut. David Lavallee, spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defence Command. "There are many facets to a situation like that," he said. "Suffice is to say we will have aircraft and people ready to respond to violations of the restricted airspace. The security agencies have a graduated response that can, if necessary, culminate in the use of lethal force," Lavallee said. ISU spokeswoman, RCMP Const. Mandy Edwards said anything that is possible or plausible, "we try to plan for". "We try to take everything into consideration and make the most comprehensive security plan," he underlined.
